Welcome to the

December 2016 edition

Taylors reach a trading milestone on December 14th 2016 December already and the last magazine of 2016. It doesn’t seem like a year has passed since I was last writing my Christmas magazine introduction.

I am no more organised this year than last year, and I have created an added challenge to deal with in December this year. All being well (and I hope I am not tempting fate by mentioning this,) we are moving house! Having decided to wait until 2017 to consider this, a home came on the market that tempted us to make the move in 2016. We aren’t going far, but the upheaval of moving a family of 5 and many years of accumulated possessions two weeks before Christmas will certainly test my organisational skills this December. At the time of writing there are 3 weeks until the move and major decluttering has been taking place throughout our current home! This year more than ever I will be looking forward to some relaxation over the Christmas period, although of course I may decide to forget that and get the paint brushes out – although I have promised my husband we will wait until the new year to start any projects. The January issue will be delivered to you between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Wednesday 7th December. We do work to a slightly different time scale with this issue as they have to be printed and delivered back to me, sorted and delivered to my team of distributors before Christmas, so as always, your assistance in getting everything to me on time would be much appreciated.

70 years of Retailing in Tickhill will be marked with a contribution of £700 to a community project to benefit all Tickhill Residents. We will also be holding an instore, FREE to enter draw, to win a TAYLORS Christmas Hamper worth £70, for the first 13 days of December. Just have a look at a till receipt, if the number 70 is on the paper, just add name and phone number to enter. The Market Place, Tickhill

Enjoy the Christmas festivities and I will be back in a months’ time with your first magazine of 2017!

December is an exciting time of year whatever age you are and we’re going into overdrive at the Nursery! By the time we get to our Christmas closing date of 23rd December we’ll be exhausted! We will be holding our very popular Nativity play over 3 sessions. We include all of our over 2’s in our plays meaning that every child gets a part to play and show off to their parents/carers. The older children will also take a trip to the CAST Theatre in Doncaster to see their production of “The 12 Birds of Christmas”. We‘ve planned a trip to Loversall to visit their Santa's Grotto There’ll also be walking trips to the garden centre to visit their grotto too. We’re holding a Christmas Jumper Day along with our Christmas Party and finally we’ll be having a full Christmas Dinner along with a visit from Santa! If you’d like any information about the nursery call us on 01302 742629. Take a look at our new website www.wilsicnursery.com and especially at our Parent Testimonials page! Community Hi from the Mayflower, I can’t believe this is the last write up of the year and what a challenging year it has been. However we are all so lucky to have the support of wonderful careers and volunteers together with people out there that care. We have a Christmas Fayre in Reception at the Sanctuary on Sunday 4th December 10am – 12noon – please come and support this. We are still bag packing in Marks and Spencer at Wheatley Hall Road, and will also be around in November and December both bag packing and with some of our residents outside, that’s providing the weather isn’t too bad. We will also be doing a street collection in Doncaster on the 26th Nov and 17th Dec outside Marks and Spencer. We all really enjoy these as the public are so generous and chatty it’s lovely to meet everyone and learn about their dogs and cats. So please come along and say hello. Big thank you's to Helen and Sara, also Vanya who have also been collecting outside Pets at Home. Big thanks also to all the usual team that have been relentless in turning up no matter what the weather to help with bucket collections. You are all stars. Also many thanks to Tesco who bring home delivery to the Sanctuary. This includes food, washing up liquid, disinfectant and much more all free. Many thanks you make life here so much easier.

We usually put up our own decorations at the Sanctuary for Christmas, however this year we have amazing help Yorkshire Building Society staff are giving up their time to come and volunteer, they will be helping with day to day tasks and also putting our decorations up. A big thank you. Update on Heart my new adopted street dog from Cyprus. Bonfire night wasn’t as horrendous as predicted and she took herself upstairs to bed in a dark room with the radio on. This seemed to work wonderfully. So we will remember for the future. She is still not confident around children but loves other dogs and we can’t wait to let her off her lead to have a long play. I think this will be a while though as every noise is still a trauma to her. We are treating her gently and I am sure she will get there. She does love to play and is obsessed by any part of clothing or cuddly she can get her paws or mouth on. Things are going missing and sometimes the strangest things end up at the bottom of the garden. I will say no more!! But she is still the most adorable good funny girl we could have wished for. Our other dog Blossom treats her with contempt and makes sure she doesn’t steal her basket, but she loves the fact that there are two dog bowls to finish off instead of one!

I now have a message from Jack...

Hello I’m Jack, I’m a largish terrier cross and I came to the Mayflower Sanctuary a few weeks ago hoping to find a new family to take me home. My carers put me in a very nice bedroom kennel and gave me a very nice dinner. When I went for a check-up at the vets, it wasn’t good news. They found I had a leaky heart. The vet did some tests and said that I needed to see a specialist so they referred me to the Willows Veterinary Centre. I heard them say it would cost £1000 just to see me. I thought how lucky I am, that the Sanctuary are willing to give me the chance to undergo the special treatment I would need. I’m not sure what that treatment will be, but I do know that until I have it, I can’t be walked in case I just drop down and die. Whatever I have, it must be really horrible. After a long journey to the Willows, I had a scan to confirm my problems and the he new vet told me I had an enlarged rged d heart heaart that t leaked. I had something met ethiing cal called calle PAD and I would need ed aan n operation operat to keep me alive. They told Ken (one of our volunteers) it would cost between £2,000 and £4,000 to fix me. It’s all very scary but my carers said no matter what they would find the money. I would be so very grateful if you could help out here a little. Until I go for my operation, my carers are giving me lots to do to keep me occupied, tasty Kongs and plenty of fuss as even a walk could cause my heart to fail. I’ll be going for the operation soon so keep me in your thoughts please. If you would like to make any donations towards Jacks operation just look at our website to donate. Many thanks We hope everyone has an amazing Christmas and New Year. Don’t forget animals on New Year’s Eve fireworks again! Thank you everyone that has supported us throughout the year.

St Mary’s School In September, Year 3 Hansby went on a visit to Creswell Crags where they got to experience many amazing adventurous activities. Year 3 have been writing a recount about their experience and what they have learnt. On a terrific Tuesday, Year 3 went on an exciting trip to Creswell Crags because we are learning about the Savage Stone Age. At Creswell Crags we took part in den building, spear throwing, fire making, science experiments and cave exploration. We went to Creswell Crags in the marvellous mini bus driven by Mrs Sanderson where the boys were singing. Firstly, we did some den building. We got our materials such as sticks, animal skin and animal guts and started to build. We only had 5 minutes to build our den. In the Stone Age they would use these dens to seek shelter as they were travelling across the country following the animals to hunt. After, we did some interesting spear throwing and tried to ‘kill’ a ‘reindeer’. On the reindeer you really needed to aim for the neck, eyes or the lungs as they were the weakest points. The tip of the spear was very sharp and made from a rock called flint. Flint in the Stone Age was very useful as many tools were made e from this material. Next we excitedly trampled into the cave - but it wasn’t just any old cave it was Robin Hood’s cave. We felt nervous but also curious while entering the amazing g cave. Dripping down from the roof of the cave were some stalactites and stalagmites. In the cave we saw many cave spiders and other creepy creatures. Finally we did some science experiments. The first one was seeing if vinegar reacted to certain rocks to make them fizz. We next then tested the PH level of different soils to judge whether it was an acid or an alkaline. This scale started att 0 and went to 14. We could investigate whether a soil was an acid or an alkaline depending on the colour it produced. In conclusion we would recommend Creswell Crags to people who wish to learn about the Stone Age or visit as a tourist. Our favourite part was the cave exploration because we loved being in dark places! During the day we learnt that spear throwing might be the most important part of surviving in the Stone Age because if you didn’t catch food you couldn’t eat. We loved going to Creswell Crags it was really enjoyable.

Tickhill Estfeld School Remembrance Day at Estfeld Primary School Each year we commemorate Remembrance Day in school with a special assembly. In the weeks leading up to the assembly our pupils learn about those who have served and who continue to serve our country, and of WKH VDFULȴ FHV WKDW WKH\ KDYH PDGH WR ensure that we live in safety and peace. Our assembly is timed so that we can observe the two minutes silence at 11 o clock; this is followed by a celebration of the work that they have produced. This year there was a strong focus on war artists and poets in Key Stage 2, whilst hil Key Stage S 1 and d Reception i Class Cl focussed on the poppy as a symbol of remembrance and peace and on the UROH RI DQLPDOV DQG WKH VDFULȴ FHV PDGH by them in wartime. It is wonderful to see the respect, understanding and empathy that our pupils display, not only when observing the silence but also and when talking about their work and listening to the thoughts of others in class and in assembly. We are proud to be teaching our pupils values for life. Likewise we were very proud of those pupils who represented both schools in Tickhill by laying a wreath at the War Memorial following the Remembrance Service at St. Mary’s Church on the Sunday morning.

Arts Review & what’s going on - December 2016 • Tickhill Music Society y Friday 9 December at 7pm ( NB new time) the Wonderful John Kirkpatrick will be performing Carols, folk songs and other Christmas stuff accompanying himself on a variety of Squeezeboxes. This chap is the Business and this will be wonderful…. And I am sure that the audience will have lots of opportunity to accompany John. Come and have a Christmas sing. In St Mary’s School Hall Tickhill www. tickhillmusicsociety.org

I am always y amazed at the calibre of musicians that play for Tickhill Music Society one Friday each month. In November we were treated to a concert by a yyoung pianist, Jinah Shim, who played the whole evening from her head… no sheet music at all, the program included work byy Liszt and Chopin… not known for a sparsityy of notes or easyy finger-work. She was trulyy astounding. I must confess myself y prettyy ignorant of much of the work that I have listened to over the years, and each time these concerts provide an education. Not all the music is easy, very little Mozart is played ( though we did get a Sonata in November) each time I have to pinch myself that I am not imagining that such a small societyy (an audience of about 100) can command performances which also occur in major concert halls. Those of yyou who enjoyy classical music and trail off to larger concert halls and don’t come to this society really need your heads examining. December, however is not classical, but one of the greats of the English Folk Scene… be advised - advance tickets are a must for nonmembers, as this will sell out and a shoe –horn needed to get everyone in! 32 TICKHILL TODAY

One reason may be the fact that shepherds at that time were not in the good books of the people because of their bad manners. Jesus will be happier if you also give your life to him so as to help you overcome the issues in your life that are making you feel unwanted and lonely. You can pray a simple prayer as follows: Please God forgive me for everything I have done in my life that is not right. Please Lord Jesus forgive me and come into my heart and stay with me. TICKHILL NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN – Continued heavy as ever. We need SATNAVs to catch up with the new opportunity.

These are close to the junction of Common Lane and Doncaster Road/Northgate, where both school children and bus passengers have to cross the road and in the vicinity of The Millstone where Castlegate merges into Westgate. We propose to raise this with DMBC; their argument concerns whether the road is wide enough for pedestrian refuges. There seems no appetite at DMBC for completing the provision of 20mph UHVLGHQWLDO ]RQHV LQVWHDG ZH KDYH VKRUW sections outside schools.

Woodland After delays with DMBC's legal personnel, the Council achieved a lease on what we have called 'Tickhill Wildwood', the naturally regenerating site alongside the track and public footpath alongside the A1(M). Thanks to the work of the Countryside Group, Scouts and friends, the biodiversity of the site has been enhanced with the planting of nearly 100 gifted native shrubs and trees. A path has been created giving residents the opportunity to enjoy the wood at their own risk. Future maintenance of the path and possible signing need consideration. Christmas cactus care! Light Christmas cacti are tropical epiphytes, which grow naturally in rain-forest trees. Choose a cool cool, bright spot spot, out of direct sun is best. Try an east-facing windowsill, and it won’t know it ever left the jungle. Humidity They love a humid atmosphere so are best grown on a gravel tray. Fill a waterproof bowl with gravel then add water to half way up the gravel. Place the potted plant on top of the gravel. Water As it’s tropical it’s less droughttolerant than other cacti species. r health and healthcare.) (Aiming to help you, to be in control of you Information from the Practice Resignation We regret to inform you that Dr de Silva who joined the Practice in August 2015 will be leaving the Practice in December 2016. We thank him for his hard work and care with patients as well as his work within the practice and the out of office time that he gave to the PPG. He will be greatly missed. The practice are in the process of recruiting for the replacement of Dr De Silva following his resignation. System to support Patients at Risk The Practice has a new system in place to support those patients who are at risk of falls or are very frail. Any one who is aware of any patient who is at risk of falling or who is very frail is asked to let reception know, preferably after 11am on any day. Thank you. The winter message from The Practice The winter message is to stay well and to use NHS 111 or NHS online plus their chemists if needed. The sub text is to understand that Viral infections should be self managed and not shared. Patients are advised that Antibiotics are not always the answer. Tickhill Gala The PPG passed the questions they received at the Gala to the Practice. Below are the responses from the Practice: “During the Tickhill Gala the PPG asked you for comments about our practice. The practice manager has responded and is only too willing to answer any further queries you may have regarding improvements. Q. Appointment System • We all acknowledge nationally the lack of GP availability something of which we hear reports of on the news regularly. We ourselves have experienced an extremely difficult period with the retirement of our senior partner Dr Saunders, the unexpected death of Dr Sheehan both of which had a huge impact on the surgery. We covered the loss of appointments as much as we possibly could with external locums, whilst we recruited for a permanent replacement. We have constantly addressed our appointments system and maximised those that we have by trying to

offer an accumulation of book on line, pre booked and book on day appointments. There will never be a one size fits all. Q. Receptionist asking Nature of Appointment • Our receptionists are very hard working, understanding and empathetic. They are trained to ensure that each call is signposted to the appropriate clinician and will make decisions based on the information given to them by patients. Whilst this may seem frustrating and intrusive to a patient when a receptionist is requesting the nature of the appointment, it is in fact helpful to the clinician. What a patient thinks is an emergency very rarely is, our receptionists try to accommodate all patient requests for a same day consultation .Q. Downstairs Reception Left unmanned at Tickhill • It is very difficult for the receptionist downstairs they can be called away by a Dr and have to leave the reception desk unmanned, due to the design of the downstairs reception area it is difficult for more than one person to be there at a time, there are occasions when emergencies occur leaving no time to put out the apology sign. Q. Telephone • We have recently updated our telephone system, which has the call waiting; we also have a dedicated number to order repeat prescriptions on the phone which should free up the incoming line. Our new phone system works in a way that if a receptionist has to leave the desk upstairs, the telephones are directed to an alternative user. • Our Saturday surgery at both sites is Extended Access all our appointments are pre booked, our telephone lines are diverted on a Friday evening to the Out of Hours Service resulting in the reception not taking incoming calls.” Oct 2016 PPG Any patient registered at either Surgery who is interested in joining the PPG Committee is asked to email the PPG at:-tickhillandcollieryppg@ yahoo.com with your name and telephone number or to leave a message in the comments box at either surgery. The tumultuous applause which followed not only showed how much the music had been appreciated and enjoyed, but also brought IRUWK DQ HQFRUHb LQ WKH IRUP RI D OLYHO\ movement from the Dumky trio. This is a type of Slavonic folk ballad where elegiac and fast tempi alternate. It brought to a rousing end a most entertaining and enjoyable concert. Philip Mottram

Tickhill i khill and d District i i t Our October speaker held everyone’s attention ti when he told of his life as a Butler in London. Headhunted byy Buckingham g Palace, he told of a fascinating life at both the Palace and Clarence House, before moving on to the USA. Here he lived a life of private jets, luxury yachts, first class travel and arranging functions and dinners for everyone including Diana Ross. This talk was full of humour and left his audience wanting to hear a lot more!

A message g from the Town Mayor The Town Council has continued working hard through the year trying to improve the way that we can best serve Tickhill’s residents. We believe that communication to residents is the best way forward and we are achieving this with the continuation of; • Two Council meetings a month (one at 10.30 a.m. on the second Tuesday of the month and one at 7.00 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of every month) where time is set aside to listen to, and discuss residents’ concerns on general or planning matters. • A monthly report on our activities in WKLV PDJD]LQH E\ WKH 7RZQ &OHUN • A comprehensive web site that is kept up to date • Full use of the notice boards at the cricket club and outside the library • Attendance at the Advisory Group and other meetings in order to keep abreast of any local issues and concerns • Monthly meetings with our Borough Councillors and DMBC representatives Keeping the Town spick and span is a key concern but I feel that we were let down by DMBC earlier this year when their restructuring led to a severe drop in standards. Surveys carried out by Councillors established that this is the case and, at the time of writing, alternative strategies are being worked on :Ζ7+287 WKH WKRXJKW RI DQ\ SDUNLQJ FKDUJHV This year, the Town celebrated Commonwealth 'D\ ZLWK WKH ȵDJV RI WKH &RPPRQZHDOWK QDWLRQV EHLQJ ȵRZQ IURP EXLOGLQJV LQ WKH FHQWUH DQG D ceremony on the Buttercross Island to mark the occasion. Work is continuing on the Neighbourhood Plan with a programme of works being drawn up by the Implementation Group. Many of the projects will be expensive to implement and, with the cutbacks to DMBC’s budgets, many will fall onto the Town Council’s meagre resources. We are also dependent on getting agreement from DMBC for many of the projects and this process can be time consuming and frustrating – but we will continue to press. Finally, I would like to thank all the diverse individuals, groups and organisations who put so much hard work into making Tickhill the lovely place that we all love.
