Welcome to the

February 2017 edition

During this season of love, focus on loving more than just those closest to you Author unknown

February is an odd month, Christmas is a distant memory, yet Spring still feels a long way away, despite the availability of the daffodils, that I love to bring in to my home at this time of year, as a reminder that longer days and warmer weather is on the way. In this month’s magazine look out for the 10% off voucher within the Torne Valley advert – valid on anything within the store not already reduced. New advertiser The Chandelier are offering all readers some special deals within their advert too. Both could be a way to brighten a dull February day! Look out for other offers, we often have them! As always, we welcome some new advertisers this month as well as lots of long standing ones who continue to advertise within our pages as a great way of getting customers. If you contact any this month don’t forget to tell them where you found them. The March issue will be delivered to you late February. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Thursday 8th February. Enjoy February and I will be back in a months’ time with your March magazine.

Tickhill and District Lions Santa’s Float. The sleigh runs brought in record donations on a number of evenings as well as the days at Tesco and Asda supermarkets and the total for the fortnight was another record. Many thanks to the Explorer Scouts and their leaders and those ‘Friends of Lions’ who assisted in knocking on doors letting as many people as possible know that Santa was on his way. Our sincere thanks for the generous donations made by so many local residents and children. Many thanks also to the Stoneacre Motor Group for the loan of the vehicle which pulled Santa’s sleigh around in superb style. Christmas Draw. :H DUH SOHDVHG WR FRQȴ UP WKDW DOO prizes have been delivered. In doing this we are conscious that there is a need for Lions to have local knowledge passed on, especially from Rossington, Bawtry, Harworth and Bircotes. We would love to recruit some new members from all parts of the area. Please contact us if you feel that you may enjoy attending our weekly meetings and helping us to raise funds to enable us to help others in need. With our ongoing theme of providing support locally we are pleased to advise that during the Lions year ending 30th June 2017 we supported 69 Welfare cases, equating to 1.3 Welfare cases per week throughout the year. 89.2% of our giving went to local charity groups and domestic projects, 6.5% to National charities and projects and 4.3% to International projects. 6

Kitchen design – open plan v structured The kitchen has a purpose and functionality for cooking and preparing meals. However, over recent years the kitchen has become more of a social space to use for far more than cooking. The most popular option especially for newbuilds and home renovators is to create a kitchen come diner, often with space for a sofa too. So, this month’s article is centred around kitchen design and the pros and cons of having an open plan space. Some of the Pro’s of an open plan kitchen. If you have a busy home with children often you can all be sat in different rooms or it can be hard to keep the little ones entertained whilst you cook. An open plan style of kitchen diner allows you as a family to be together more by all being in one space. A great way to socialise and bring everyone together. You can be cooking and chatting to your guests who are at the dining table and still be part of the atmosphere and conversation. Open plan kitchen living allows you the space to live, work and entertain. Avoids having a dining room that hardly ever gets used. $ PRUH RSHQ SODQ NLWFKHQ RIWHQ EHQH¿ WV IURP KDYLQJ PRUH QDWXUDO OLJKW À RRGLQJ LQ DQG FUHDWHV an airier open space. And some Con’s Noise levels, it can be a little tricky when you’re 10 TICKHILL TODAY

trying to escape the noise of cooking, T.V or music or even washing up if you’re all in one room together. This can be helped with remote controls, appliances and perhaps having a separate utility. Food odour. Cooking smells can permeate throughout your home and could be an issue. To minimise the smell, invest in a really good extractor fan which should reduce the smell while cooking and make them not linger. Clutter, by being more open plan you will inherit more clutter. Your kitchen will always be on show and there could be very little privacy. Therefore, there is a need to be clean, tidy and organised to ensure your guests don’t see any mess and a clean as you go approach is needed for this style of kitchen. There is nowhere to hide! No sanctuary to escape to if your family or guests are driving you crazy! There is no set formula or rules that tell you what kitchen layout will work better in your home. It’s all about how you choose to utilise the space around you and the lifestyle you lead. Until next month

Hello to everyone from Mayflower Sanctuary, I would like to say how overwhelmed we are to have had so many treats, toys, blankets, food and lots more brought to us over the Christmas period and they are still coming. Everyone’s generosity is amazing. All our residents had a wonderful Christmas getting into their parcels and tiring themselves out playing with their new toys. We have had the busiest December and January we have had for a few years. However, we did take a view before re homing over the Christmas period. We don’t like to re home over this time if there is to be a full house or lots of activity which is pretty normal at Christmas. We need our new pets to be given a chance to settle down before subjecting them to a riotous household. When I went to the Sanctuary last Saturday I actually saw an empty pen, I have really never seen that previously, however it won’t be long before it is taken as we still have a list of waiting dogs. Our cattery transformation has started so all of the cats have been moved to a safe place at the opposite part of the Sanctuary whilst the work is taking place. We should have new cat pens up and running in a few weeks I am told. We are organising a big event to raise funds on May 18th it is a

St Mary’s School Nativity at St Marys This year the Reception and Nursery classes teamed up together in order to create the Christmas Nativity. Reception took the lead learned the entire story through a literary technique called Talk for Writing. This meant that the class worked together, telling the narrative with actions to help them remember it. It was interspersed with songs which the Nursery children helped to sing ORXGO\ DQG FRQȴ GHQWO\ Everyone dressed up as a character and we all performed for our adults. Three very brave Reception children helped our Year 6 children during our whole school Church Service, that saw Mary (a last minute stand in by Joseph B), Joseph (Ethan) and Donkey (Brooke) make their way through the church to create a beautiful nativity scene in front of parents, carers and the entire school. A lovely end to the Christmas term.

& what’s going on - FEBRUARY 2018 •

There is so much going on in our area it’s very hard to know where to start sometimes. Art at the Deli: Maureen Fisher AKA ‘The owl Lady’ solo exhibition www.artatthedeli.com Arts Society Dukeries Wednesday 7 February at 2pm A lecture to commemorate the passing of The ‘Representation of the Peoples’ Act’ by Linda Smith ‘Women’s Representation in Art’. Linda Smith is known for her very entertaining but information and scholarship packed lectures, she is terrific and well worth making the journey to Worksop for. And what was this parliamentary act? It’s the one where some women Got The Vote. at St Anne’s Church Hall, Worksop S80 1NJ. Members free, Visitors £6 on the door. www.eastmidlandsnadfas.co.uk/dukeries Cast in Doncaster The repertoire at Cast is as ever very varied and aims very high. My money this month is 15 to 17 Feb ‘Trump the Musical’ and wonder if it will still be as president that the subject of this ‘disturbing, irreverent and very silly’ show will entertain us…. I am imagining something ‘Beyond The Fringe’ -ish here. And 8 – 10 Feb a show of quite a different complexion – Noel Coward’s ‘Private Lives’. 20 March - Exhibition on Screen Vincent van Gogh. 27 Feb, a piece of physical theatre from Gecko entitled ‘The Wedding’. …and plenty more www. castindoncaster.com Djanogly Art Gallery in Nottingham until 4 March ‘Viking: Rediscover the Legend’ on tour from the British Museum including treasures from many of the well-known hoards ever discovered in this country. www. lakesidearts.org.uk Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery open Wed to Sunday. Exhibition: Until– 8th March ‘Good Vibrations’ The Art of Colour Good Vibrations uses artworks from the collection of Doncaster Museum Service to examine the many different ways that artists use colour. The exhibition also contains a section on the science of colour. Life drawing: 24th 11 - 1pm and 2 - 4pm 24 TICKHILL TODAY

Art History Lecture: Friday 9th February – Good Vibrations: talk and tour. Join Rachel Holland-Hargreaves and Neil McGregor for a tour of the ‘Good Vibrations’ exhibition. Meet in the main gallery space at 10.30am. Please note that the event will entail walking round the exhibition. Friday 16th February – ‘THE SPECTRUM OF WHITE’ From the purity of lilies in Renaissance annunciation scenes, to the Impressionists’ belief that white was never pure white, which they illustrated in their paintings of snow, white tablecloths and dresses, the lecture will look at the way that the colour white interacts and relates with other colours. www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums Friends of Doncaster Museum 3 Feb 11am ‘The Great War: Faith in Wartime’ lecture by John Broom http://www.doncaster.gov.uk/ services/culture-leisure-tourism/doncastermuseums-service Ferans Art Gallery, Hull 17 February to Sunday 22 April ‘Open Exhibition’ Many artists from around the region send work into this very popular gallery Open Exhibition. If you find yourself in Hull, the gallery is well worth some time spent and also has an excellent café. http://www.hull.gov.uk/resident/culture/ ferens-art-gallery-open-exhibition-2018 Harley Gallery Welbeck 3 February until 15 April ‘Circus Work’ by Peter Lavery Documenting life in the Circus – from backstage ordinariness to sequinned spectacle. Peter Lavery is best known for his seductive advertising photography, but for the last 50 years he has been photographing circus performers around Britain. All shot on a plate camera, the work is an impressive collection of circus subjects. These intimately detailed photographs expose moments of ordinariness in extraordinary lives. Lavery has had an enduring interest and passion for the subject since dropping in on a small indoor circus in his home town of Wakefield in 1968. The son of a Yorkshire miner, Lavery progressed via Leeds Art College to the Royal College of Art in London, where he studied photography. Before finishing his course there, he had already started travelling, and living rough, around the country in search of circuses. Circus Work is considered one of the most important examples of human and social documentation produced in Britain. This is

Graves Art Gallery Sheffield until 3 March William Blake ‘The Book of Job.’ until 17 March, Dan Holdsworth ‘Mapping the Limits of Space’ Weston Park Museum until June ‘Ghosts of Firth Brown’. In the early 1980s, Roger Taylor gained access into the newly abandoned premises of Firth Brown steelworks. He was intrigued by the scale of these immense, empty buildings and found himself trying to imagine what they must have been like when they were filled with workers, machinery, heat and noise. If you look closely at his pictures you will discover the ghosts of this workforce revealed by tiny traces of an intangible presence: abandoned tools, official notices, scuffed paintwork and, perhaps most poignantly, the scribbled graffiti of defeat marking a farewell to the workplace. www.museums-sheffield.org.uk Sheffield Theatres in the Lyceum ‘Hairspray’, ‘Beautiful’ the Carole King musical, in the Crucible ‘Frost /Nixon’ and in the Studio a new and local play ‘Chicken Soup’ from Orgreave to the Brexit-vote, food-bank times. www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Tickhill Music Society 9 February at 7pm Rosalind Ventris (viola) and Richard Uttley ( piano). community Community Hi I have just been in touch with John who has arranged for me to email over to you details for an advert to be produced for the January edition of the Retford Life. I have attached our new logo and old leaflet. Please could you change

the old leaflet by: - physiotherapy clinic Your local

HABITS… The start of a new year typically sees many of us considering our habits – either ‘bad’ habits we’d like to give up or ‘good’ habits we’d like to adopt. Our bodies also develop habits (both static postures and dynamic movement patterns) and it’s wise to consider this from time to time. The most obvious postural habit is slouched sitting but take a look around and you’ll find many more. Many of us cross our legs when sitting in a chair and we often favour one leg over the other. Observe family members watching the television – usually people will sit in the same place (‘their seat’) which in turn dictates them sitting a certain way. In the office, work station ergonomics will affect the positions in which we find ourselves working.

Here to help you logo feelon at your best. • Adding the new • 2SHQ VL[ GD\V D ZHHN ÁH[LEOH DSSRLQWPHQWV All the contact details remain the same but also include our email info@blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk including late nights and early mornings • Take out all the wording about the FREE advice sessions • Modify Services listing to: :H KDYH D IULHQGO\ WHDP RI KLJKO\ TXDOLÀHG Musculoskeletaltherapists (all types of joint, muscle, nerve, specialising in: ligament pain, including sports injuries) Women’s Health Physiotherapy Acupuncture ((all all types of joint, muscle, nerve, ligament pain pain, n, Sports massage sports injuries) Sports testing including services Nutrition Talking therapy Classes

Dynamic movement patterns describe how we perform certain tasks. Upper limb tasks are dictated to some degree by having a dominant side but there are many everyday movements that don’t need to be performed the same way each time. Consider how you access cupboards, bend down, carry out low level household chores and work related activities. Why is this important? Favouring certain postures and using the same movement patterns can lead to an imbalance of stress and strain on the body and can result in different tissues and different areas of the body becoming fatigued/weak/overstretched/ tight/irritated/painful/stiff. If this happens, Physiotherapy treatment can help to restore pain free movement and function and redress any imbalances. However, prevention by varying how we use our bodies will minimise the risk of these problems arising.

2017 saw Bircotes Swimming Club go from strength to strength and we hope to continue building on that throughout 2018. We ended the year on a high with some excellent swimming in the Borough of Barnsley Christmas Sprint, the City of Bradford Jingle Bell meet and the Notts Festive Frenzy with some of our swimmers achieving medals (Abigail, Boyen, Ellie Mae, Josh, Lexi, Liam, and Oliver) and some (Abigail, Dom and Josh) gaining County qualifying times. Of course, we also know how to party and we had a great end of year Christmas celebration for all the swimmers, helpers and Coaches – many thanks to you all, and to all who helped organise the festivities. 2018 promises to be an action-packed year and we have lots planned. By the time you are reading this we will already have competed in a friendly gala with Retford swimming club which involves our under9s and is a great opportunity for these younger swimmers to compete in a friendly environment. We will also be continuing our extra training throughout January and February, since more than 15 of our swimmers will be representing the Club at the Nottinghamshire County championships in multiple individual and relay events, and in March we will be holding our 2nd annual Club Championships where there will be medals and trophies galore!

Burns Night At the time of writing there are still tickets available for our Burns Night Celebration on Friday 2nd February in the Parish Room. We commence at 7.30pm. We serve tatties, neeps and haggis and other seasonal fare – including tots of whisky! Bagpipes provide the music Tickets are £20 per person. By Rachel Leverton

Greenhouse Joy I am an impatient gardener. By February I am always eager to get started and my greenhouse means that I can do just that.

You don’t have to heat a greenhouse but I like to because it lets me get an early start in spring, and keeps my tender pot plants alive through the winter. When I had an unheated greenhouse my frost-tender plants rarely survived.

A greenhouse means that I don’t fear the weather, I can potter in my garden all year round and I can grow a range of plants that would not survive without protection. Most gardens have room for at least a tiny greenhouse and it’s well worth trying to incorporate one into your space.

I prefer electric heating, which doesn’t smell and doesn’t produce the excessive amounts RI ZDWHU YDSRXU DVVRFLDWHG ZLWK SDUDI¿ Q 0DNH VXUH \RX XVH D TXDOL¿ HG HOHFWULFLDQ DQG WKDW all the sockets are rated for outdoor use. Fit a thermostat and the heat will only come on when necessary, making it very economical.

Before choosing a greenhouse, check whether your local planning authority places any restrictions in terms of size or position. Usually there are no problems.

At the other end of the year make sure you have ventilation, or your plants will cook. If you can afford it go for the automatic arms which open ventilators if the greenhouse reaches a certain temperature. Also consider blinds to help prevent sun-scorch.

Ideally a greenhouse should be placed in a bright spot because poor light and heavy shade will mean sickly spindly plants. Buy as big a greenhouse as you can accommodate because I guarantee that no matter how big it VHHPV DW ¿ UVW \RX ZLOO ¿ OO LW You can make a greenhouse from poles and polythene but it won’t last more than a couple of years and won’t be pretty to look at. Fully glazed aluminium greenhouses are good value, and if you like wood then go for western red cedar, which ages well and lasts a long time. It’s important to have level foundations 46 TICKHILL TODAY

I arrange my greenhouse with staging on one side and a soil bed on the other for my tomatoes to grow in, and I’ve attached some guttering and a downpipe to a water butt so I can collect rainwater. It’s my little haven in February; where I plant seeds and imagine what my garden will look like in a three months’ time.

TICKHILL & DISTRICT MALE VOICE CHOIR On behalf of the whole choir we wish everyone a very Happy and Peaceful New Year. December was as usual a very busy period for the choir as following on from our visit to St. John’s Hospice at Balby on Tuesday 5th, we then performed at The Tavern Community Hub, Tickhill (formerly known as Tickhill Institute) on Tuesday 12th. Our main Christmas Concert took place at Tickhill Methodist Church on Saturday 16th which as always proved to be very popular. It was interesting that afterwards members of the audience commented on the high quality of our performance. On Monday 18th we once more performed at the Annual Lessons and Carols Service, held in the chapel at Bassetlaw Hospital, Worksop which was relayed throughout the Hospital Trust through its own Trust AM radio station. Sweet singing in the Choir For its Christmas concert, Tickhill Music Society was entertained by the renowned chamber choir, Abbeydale Singers, from 6KHÉ? Some of the ancient carols were given an uncompromising modern harmonization, but all were sung with attention to detail and with feeling. The audience was also introduced to the concept of macaronic text, where the words of the carol are a mixture of English and Latin – a common feature of many carols. How the expression made the journey from cookery to musicology was not explained.

The gothic feel made us glad we were not here alone. Thus a coffee stop in the open was welcomed and very much enhanced by Norman’s ice dance version of Bolero whilst delivering portions of his delicious birthday cake. After coffee and cake we were soon on open moorland leading to Upper Burbage Bridge and the gentle descent down to our lunch stop at the Fox Inn (or Longshaw NT Cafe). Meanwhile, if anyone has grown and is willing to donate seedlings of native broad-leaved trees, please let me know. Other ash trees in Tickhill are likely to be infected this summer. Though the purpose has merit, the proposal envisaged the removal of two or three of the Bawtry Road limes. A huge thankyou to The Hub, which was beautifully decorated, warm and welcoming, and enjoyed by everyone, to Eatons for hot pies, and Deli 28 for the sherry trifle, we ate the lot! 66 TICKHILL TODAY

The February Meeting is a special Members Only event. Following last year’s success with ‘School Dinners’, we are celebrating the 60s. with ‘Flower Power.’ Members are asked to dress and join in the fun, if it’s only a string of beads! There will also be a special mystery guest appearance, music, quiz and our own D.J! Tickets £5 are available in the Library.

News from the East Neighbourhood Police Inspector Dear Readers, Since my last article, we have enjoyed a busy festive period which is now a dim and distant memory. I am pleased to say there has been very little reported crime to update you on since my December, but I would like to draw your attention to two particular types of crime which have occurred occasionally over the past month. I have noticed some reports of garden sheds being broken into and tools, including a lawn mower being stolen. I know many people store valuable items in their sheds but do not always ensure they are as well protected as they could be. Sadly, good quality padlocks are often used on a basic hasp and staple, which can all too easily be prised from the shed making very little noise. However, you can take some simple steps to better protect your property such as purchasing a shed alarm, use clutch head screws or coach screws to secure a hasp and staple to the door, use a closed shackle padlock and ideally, put more than one lock on the shed. You can also look at improving door hinges by replacing the screws in them with bolts. These measures make it more GLÉ? FXOW WR EUHDN LQWR \RXU VKHG DQG RIWHQ deter would be thieves. However, if they still EUHDN LQ \RX FDQ PDNH WKHLU WDVN GLÉ? FXOW by chaining equipment up and don’t forget to property mark it. We often recover bikes and tools but cannot identify the owner. Motor vehicles can be an easy target and I have recently seen some reports of cars being broken into. Please make sure you always remove valuables from your car and use the lockable glove box or boot to hide anything you have to leave in it. Don’t forget to lock your car and, if you have a garage, try and use it. If not, put it on the drive and consider security lighting or cctv to provide even more protection. Some 68 TICKHILL TODAY

2017 and 2018 are years of change and challenge for your Council particularly on the financial front where Tickhill Town Council have been and still are facing unprecedented demands on our resources.

72 Lancaster Crescent, Tickhill DN11 9QB • 01302 751787

These include but, are not limited to, the necessary and highly skilled remedial work undertaken on the Buttercross, enhanced security measures including CCTV for the Pavilion and adjoining area in response to increasing levels of anti-social activity and, most significantly, the imposition of business rates by DMBC on the Pavilion and the Council car park both of which had been previously exempted. Indeed, DMBC have, in accordance with legislation, also claimed three years of back dated rates. Regardless of this, and in accordance with wishes of the community as expressed in the Neighbourhood Plan, the car park remains free to use as an important support for our business community. Accordingly, Tickhill Town Council are obliged to adjust the precept by the equivalent of a further 15p per household per week to an average of

£28.34p per annum which will still be at a level significantly less than any of our neighbouring communities e.g. most notably Rossington and Harworth. Residents will appreciate that this has been achieved, in part, by those years where your Council have bucked the national trends by not passing on any increase at all. Even this level will still have the effect of further diminishing the reserves.

14 Church Lane, Tickhill, DN11 9NB 07490 453970

It is also with regret that the Council announce the resignation, for personal reasons, of the Pavilion Manager. Tickhill Town Council wish him all the best in the future.

Methodist Minister

Dear Friends, We conclude the Lord’s prayer with the words, “For the kingdom and the power and the glory are yours now and foreverâ€?. Earlier in the series (July 2017) I wrote about the kingdom of God. To remind you, the kingdom of God rules in the hearts of people. In doing so, God comes in his power to live in them. Having the power of God living in you does not give you the authority to bully people around you. However, Paul describes the use of the power of God through our weaknesses. Ȇ0\ JUDFH LV VXÉ? I wonder if I can remind you that glorifying God is not about having a ‘halo’ on your head as you lead your daily life. The word ‘glory’ has many meanings amongst which are: honour won by notable achievements great beauty Every person has been created to bring God glory. In other words, as God’s kingdom resides in you and his power enables you to work with your weaknesses to make others strong, people will see the great beauty of God in your life. God will then receive the honour won through your achievements. As I have already mentioned, God’s glory PD\ FRPH WKURXJK VXÎ? HULQJ UHMHFWLRQV VQHHULQJ DPRQJ RWKHU GLÉ? FXOW VLWXDWLRQV ΖW may also be that God’s beauty and honour in your life may not be evident in your lifetime. By the way, many heroes lived simple lives and did what God expected of them. Most of them were only acknowledged as heroes many years after their death. So, it is not your take to strife for heroism in your lifetime. However, as Christians we also believe that one day we will see the Lord face to face in all of his glory, power and majesty when his kingdom is fully present. I wonder if you can ask God to help you do one good thing to bless someone this month. Write it down on a paper and make it your project to do it. This will help you to use the power of God in you to bring his beauty in your life. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,
