Come and see our Welcome to

the FEBRUARY 2015 edition

Last time I wrote my introductionthere were still 2 weeks to go until Christmas, which now seems like months ago. I did of course, despite my concerns, manage to get done everything that needed to be done before Christmas. Much of my January seems to have been spent considering different kitchens, thinking about layouts, assessing different appliances and explaining our plans to various builders, electricians and kitchen designers. It is approaching 10 years since we moved into our current house, (which is the longest I have ever lived anywhere) and I have been thinking I would like a new kitchen for most of that time. Hopefully 2015 will be the year that I make that happen, but at my current rate of decision making, maybe not! Please come and say hello if you are visiting the Business Showcase at Doncaster Racecourse on Thursday 26th February. It is free to attend and there are over 200 exhibitors of which Today Publications will be one of them! A great place to meet new contacts, suppliers and service providers, for anyone in business or who is considering starting a business.

Ethan, Florence and Millie – Our hardworking angels

Foundation Stage at Tickhill St Mary’s C of E Primary School: Christmas Production

‘Angel Express’ On Monday 8th December, the Foundation Stage performed their nativity production called ‘Angel Express’ to a packed audience. The production told the Christmas Nativity story through a script performed by some very hardworking angels, who needed to perfect a song for Baby Jesus. 66 children were involved in the performance and they particularly enjoyed dressing up as different characters and singing a selection of songs. The children were excited to perform in front of their families and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The children said: ‘I liked it when I dressed as an angel and said my lines in the concert.’ (Eva – Nursery) ‘I liked being an angel and singing the songs.’ (Millie – Nursery) ‘The best bit of doing my concert was when Mummy came to watch me.’ (Jamie – Reception) ‘I loved being the angel conductor and saying my lines to the audience.’ (Molly – Reception) ‘I liked being on the stage and saying my words.’ (Grace – Reception) ‘I loved dressing up and getting to sing lots of songs.’ (Olivia – Reception) 4

A year in the life of a volunteer litter picker! Although our volunteer started in Sept 2013 it was January 2014 when he decided to start keeping a record of the amount of litter/rubbish & dog foulings collected. In the year from 12/01/2014 to 11/01/2015 , 203 sessions out collecting equates to about 4 times per week. Collecting 1430 bags of litter/rubbish plus a further 947 unbagged dog foulings plus 1 human fouling from around the main streets in the centre of Tickhill. 1430 bags at a modest 4 Kg per bag (many bags over 4 Kg) equates to 5720 Kg, that’s nearly 5 ¾ Tonnes in the year! Then add this to what the local authority DMBC collect from the rest of Tickhill? This work could not be done without the help and assistance given by DMBC’s litter team so thank you to them.

Tickhill thanks Nigel Cannnings for keeping our town tidy. 12

Tickhill and Dementia Awareness Tickhill is a supportive, attractive and caring place to live. Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could say it was a “Dementia Friendly Town” as well? Well here is our chance!! Following Dementia Friends training, one of The Patients’ Group has just completed a training session to be a Dementia Champion. This means that the PPG now has a member who can offer FREE Dementia Friends Awareness-Raising sessions to businesses, groups, organizations and individuals in Tickhill. We hope that we can increase the level of understanding about dementia and how to support people living with dementia in Tickhill.

What will it involve. A free short awareness-raising session, lasting less than an hour, to enable them to have an understanding of dementia and be willing and able to assist people who are living with dementia in simple ways such as allowing someone time to compose their thoughts and make it easier to communicate.

Why? 1 in 14 people have been diagnosed with dementia. However, this figure is likely to be an underestimate as some patients and their families do not seek help. We learnt also that there are about 150 different types of dementia which affects people in many different ways. Although dementia is a progressive disease people can and do live well and continue to lead active, enjoyable lives for some considerable time after the onset. The important message is to seek medical advice and diagnosis at an early stage as help is available. If you would like to have a talk please contact our committee member Judith Barton on 01302 751276 or email jmd.bart51@gmail.com. She is happy to attend meetings or events. Indeed she is raring to go so please get in touch with her. T 16

A whole host of different fundraising activities and events are being planned for the year ahead to support Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in North Anston. The charity has to raise over £3m to provide its specialist support for children with life limiting and life shortening conditions, and their families – both in the hospice and in the community. The fundraising events provide something for everyone; whether you’re a runner, like cycling or would like to go to a ladies lunch. Bluebell Wood has reserved 100 discounted places for the brand new Yorkshire half marathon in Sheffield in April and the charity is gearing up to hold its first ever ‘Dambuster’ road cycle challenge event in June. You can join Bluebell Wood for a ladies lunch at the Sitwell Arms, Renishaw, in March or the whole family can embark on a treasure hunt at a cute Fairytale Trail in April. February is also Make a Will month. Bluebell Wood has partnered with seven solicitors, who during February when ‘Bluebell Wood’ is mentioned will give a donation to the charity. Details of solicitors can be found at www. bluebellwood.org/makeawill Bluebell Wood is also on the lookout for community volunteers, to help at events or with fundraising in their area. The friendly team are all focused upon helping to raise vital funds for the hospice in different and exiting ways. Volunteer fundraisers are matched to their roles and can completely tailor their hours around the time they are able to give. So, whether you have two hours spare or two days, our fundraisers would love to hear from you. For more details about events and our fundraising opportunities, visit www.bluebellwood.org or call the fundraising team on 01909 517365. T

Friends of Cast It is over a year since the new multi-space performance venue opened in the centre of Doncaster. Cast, situated on Sir Nigel Gresley Square, has seen large audiences enjoy a wide and varied programme of music, theatre, dance and family entertainment. Anyone who was lucky enough to attend the recent pantomime will know what a welcoming place Cast is, great for families but also providing opportunities to attend high quality live performances for people of every age and interest. Cast is above all a friendly place. In recent weeks, a small group of regular audience members have been meeting with the idea of setting up a formal Friends Organisation to support Cast as it develops and simply enjoy being more involved with the venue. We would now like to invite people from across Doncaster and further afield to join with us and develop this idea further. If you’d like to join this new group, meet new friends or perhaps be involved in the organisation of this new group, we’d love to hear from you. Membership is open to anyone 18 or over and is free, although a small administrative charge will be required to pay for postage and administration. If you’d like to know more and how you can be a ‘Founder Friend’ contact me, Dave Adgar on 07733 108553 dadgar@thecct.org.uk T

THE ALLOTMENT and NOT BOBBY Everton Village Players present two contrasting one-act plays, “The Allotment”, a drama by Gillian Plowman, and “Not Bobby” a comedy by Nick Warburton as their February production. In The Allotment directed by David Larder we see four women in a state of crisis carrying out punishment orders in a community allotment for crimes they have committed in the past. Totally deluded and in a state of denial they create a life of fantasy giving comfort and support to each other in their own way. But when a new probation officer arrives their past catches up with them, as she also faces a traumatic event from her own background. David Larder’s award winning interpretation of this dramatic tale will in turn make you laugh and cry. Not Bobby, directed by Mollie Hall, is a quirky satirical look at the education system. Anxious to complete yesterday’s newspaper crossword, Frank finds the page missing. His mother Pam has used it to line the rabbit cage. But Frank is astonished to find that it has been completed. Could Bobby the rabbit be responsible? Matters taken on a touch of the absurd when the Education Authorities assess Bobby and place him in the top infants. The Allotment and Not Bobby will be performed from 18th to 21st February 2015. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 01777 817275 or the website at www.evertonvillageplayers.co.uk T 20

community Hello everyone, we are at last utilising our new reception building, it is so good to be able to chat to people about their requirements in a warm up to date building on these cold and wintry days. Not only do we have a fabulous new reception area but our dogs have also benefited too. We were able to upgrade some of our kennels that house smaller dogs and have also made room for a socialising area. We still have future plans but for the time being we must concentrate on paying vets bills and taking care of the animals in our care. We are all very grateful that a supporter remembered us in his Will, however it was stipulated that the money could not be used for running costs and needed to be used for a project. He was very much aware that we needed more space to educate, socialise our dogs and much, much more, this building will have indeed a variety of uses. So thank you so much Councillor Granger. One small dog that we have in our care at the moment is a Jack Russell called Daisy. She is a sweet little girl and just wants a quiet life. When she came to us she had a really bad skin condition (and not very much fur on her body ) but as the weeks have gone by she is getting a little better every day. With regular baths and treatment she should be ready to rehome any time now. Daisy is 8 years old and very loving. If you feel that you could give her a home and either foster or adopt her please let us know, At the moment she is living in the office at the Sanctuary with her bed right under the radiator snuggling in with her soft toys and blankets. It would be wonderful to be able to arrange a home for her in the not too distant future.

Finding a forever home As a charity we rely heavily on public donations and would not be able to survive without your help. Our vets bills are over ÂŁ40,000 per year and this figure increases every year. We would like to be here for the future but need your help to survive. A big thank you to everyone that donated dinners for our dogs and cats, also treats and food over the Christmas period. Sat 21st February We would like to invite you to join us at our psychic evening on Sat 21st February taking place at Mayflower Sanctuary. The price is ÂŁ7.50 and will include pie and pea supper. 28th March We will be holding a Table Top sale in the Scout Head Quarters Tickhill. If you wish to reserve a table please call Margaret on 07969203206 these will be charged at 10 pounds. Light refreshments will be available to purchase, and a small fee of 50p will be charged for entry. If you feel that you can help our Sanctuary in any way please call 01302 711330 please leave a message and someone will call you back . Please come to see the work do, if you have time join out walkers on a Tuesday and make new friends too. We will look forward to seeing you soon.

Estfeld School– Eggciting Time at Estfeld It may have been snowing outside today, but there is definitely Spring in the air at Estfeld. Yesterday our Reception Class took delivery of fourteen eggs and an incubator, and already our first new arrival has hatched – Egbert emerged from his shell this morning and has been closely observed since, by thirty pairs of small eyes. The pupils were all really surprised and excited and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Egbert’s siblings, so that they can name them too. As the days go by the pupils will see the chicks hatch, and develop – they grow very quickly - and by the end of week one will the chicks will be placed in a run to allow them the space that they need to walk and flap their wings. By the time that the chicks leave Estfeld in a fortnight’s time, they will almost be ready to fly. Of course there is a lot to learn about growth and life-cycles from observing the chicks as they hatch and mature, but it is a lot of fun too. The arrival and hatching of the chicks is an annual event at Estfeld and our pupils throughout school also enjoy a visit down to the Reception classroom to take a peek.

Make a Property

TRUST WILL

to ensure your children inherit Knowing your children will inherit your assets after you have gone is something that probably gives you great comfort. But the uncomfortable truth is that unless you have the right type of will, nearly everything you think your children will inherit could easily go in care home fees for the surviving partner. Many couples make a ‘Mirror Will’ which leaves everything to the surviving partner and then to their children, not realising that if the surviving partner needs residential care, he or she will have to use all their assets to pay for this until they have £14,250 left. Property Trust Wills are the best way of ensuring that your children inherit everything that you

intended them to. Instead of leaving everything to each other, this type of will enables you and your partner to each leave your personal share of your home to your children in trust, with the condition that the children cannot have their share while the surviving partner is still alive. The surviving partner is still able to sell their share of the home or move house but the share left in trust to the children cannot be included in any means test calculations, which means it cannot be used to pay care home fees. Property Trust Wills are only suitable for couples in good mental health and cannot be used by single people or a surviving partner who now owns the property outright. Jones and Co is probably Bawtry’s best known firm of solicitors, having offered personal and business legal advice to people in the area for more than 200 years. TICKHILL BROWNIES So, already January has gone and we are into February. As I write this snow is forecast this week so we are all hoping it stays around long enough for our chip walk at the end of the month. The chip walk has now become a firm fixture in our calendar, along with the carol service and Remembrance Sunday. It has to take place before the end of January or the nights are too light for us to use our torches and get the full benefit of the dark nights. It is an exciting adventure for the ones who have not experienced it before and an anticipated evening for those who are old hands. Talking about the Scout and Guide Carol Service we are pleased to say that it raised £105.58 for Bluebell Wood. And as for Remembrance Sunday, the poppies made by the Brownies were much commented on, and we have been asked to decorate the church again this year.

Les Francophiles de Tickhill In the depths of winter let yourself be transported to sunnier climes! Follow with Peter Chappell his 2012 trip from Marrakech south into the Sahara. Well known as our Treasurer, Peter will present his talk on "The influence of French culture in Morocco" on Wednesday February 4 at 7.30pm at the Parish Room, Tickhill. Refreshments will be included. Visitors are welcome at a charge of £3. For further details contact Edwin Simpson on 742714 or Janet Erridge on 745281

We will be visiting Eureka! in March and we are in the early stages of planning a sleepover at The Deep for over 100 Brownies from across the region in June. We still have a few places available in our Tuesday pack, so if your daughter is between 7-10, and would like to join, please contact me. Methodist Minister Dear Friends,

Many of us remember the month of February for the obvious reason of Valentine’s Day. It is the day that many people in the world celebrate love. Wonder how many of us really mean it when we tell people whom we know that we love them. There is a story of a young man who was speaking on the phone with his fiancé. As he was ending the conversation, he said to her, “I love you”. Then he concluded, “I’ll see you tomorrow, if it doesn’t rain”. I wonder what kind of love depends on the weather? There is another story (in the bible) of a young boy who gave his lunch of 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes to Jesus and his disciples to be used to feed a multitude of people. This boy teaches us that love is all about sacrificing our most valuable resources (including time) for the benefit of others. The greatest example of love is our generous God who gave his only Son to the world in order to save it from sin (John 3: 16). He gave in order to restore the world and our relationship with him. God takes tiny things in our lives and multiply them for the benefit of others. As we reflect on ‘love’ in the month of February, I wonder if I can use this opportunity to invite people living in Tickhill and its environs to a session on ‘the love of God’ at Tickhill Methodist Church on Valentine’s Day, Saturday 14th February 2015, at 2.30 p.m. It is a form of gathering, which some people call “Messy Church”. The label describes what it is – messy. It involves games, art and craft, food and a talk. Anyone of any age and gender is welcome because every activity appeals to everybody. It’s basically having fun for a couple of hours with the family in a chapel every second Saturday of the month. I wonder if you can give it a try this month. Back to the issue of God’s love, a small gift can go a long way in God’s economy. No wonder Tesco has its motto, ‘every little helps’. I wonder if I can chip in to inform readers who live in Rossington and its environs that the Foodbank is opening a satellite centre at the Baptist Church at the Holmescarr Community Centre soon. Watch out for more information from your local news centres. This month, I wonder if I can use this opportunity to ask you to review your giving by giving generously to those who are in need of food and other resources. For those of you, who are also hungry for more of God in your life this year, be reminded that you can turn to Jesus who is the bread of live. He knows you already and is yearning to have a great relationship with you. Bring your stretching situation to him now for he is ready to listen. Happy Valentine’s Day greetings. My prayer for you, your family and friends is that this year, God’s blessings will abound in your lives. Yours’ sincerely, Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam Methodist Minister for Adwick-le-Street, Auckley, Bawtry, Harworth, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Sprotbrough Road and Tickhill Tel. 01302857952 • E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk T

Movember On November 30th Rocco’s Italian Kitchen hosted a fabulous event to raise money for Movember UK.

TICKHILL NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Have you forgotten our Neighbourhood Plan? I hope not! You may remember an article around last Easter telling you that we had to reorganise the Plan into two parts (one to do with land-use planning, the other with everything else) as a result of new Government advice. This meant reprinting, going through the formal consultation processes again on Town Council and then DMBC websites and finally going to an Independent Examiner. After frustrating delays, we expect his report shortly.

Movember UK is a charity that has an annual campaign each November which asks men to grow moustaches to raise awareness and understanding of the health risks men face, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s mental health. In the UK every hour a man dies from prostate cancer. More than 40,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, which equates to 1 in every 8 men. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged between 2549 years. Three quarters of all suicides are male. Such sad and shocking statistics inspired us as a business to get involved and help raise money for such a deserving charity. We invited all our staff and customers to get involved and grow a moustache and get involved with Movember, they collected sponsorship through family, friends and their local community ending on the 30th November with a fantastic night at Rocco’s.

Hopefully he will recommend that we take the Plan to referendum, when every elector in the parish has a vote and the Town Council will ask you to endorse it and give the Plan legal backing. Then comes the important part and the real work – implementing its policies and proposals.

John Hoare

Rocco’s hosted a sold out event including a delicious 4 course meal. We had a jazz singer performing on the evening, Kim Coup, who was phenomenal and who will be returning to Rocco’s this May Bank Holiday weekend. James from The Gentleman’s retreat in Bawtry brought his barbers chair down to shave men who donated to Movember, or wives and girlfriends who were fed up of their partners moustaches could nominate them to be clean shaven. We also held a ‘Best Tash’ competition which was won by Mick Jackson of Tickhill (pictured) who was awarded his prize and a Mr Movember sash. The night was a huge success and raised £1355 for Movember. Everybody had a fabulous time and we are looking forward to making this an annual event at Roccos. T 38

garden view

GRASS ROOTS Don’t try to be too clever with your garden... I read this statement the other day that ‘Gardens are not just plants’ which got me thinking about the contribution that plants do bring to the garden. I’ve seen many different styles of garden in my time, from the ones that have just a single plant in them to those with thousands. So can you have a garden without plants? Although I know of no official description of a garden, I believe that plants are the defining element. A garden without plants, even just weeds, is incomplete and not seen as a garden in the eyes of the majority. A greatly illustrative and somewhat whacky example of this was seen in James May’s show garden at the 2009 Chelsea Flower Show. James May, presenter of the BBC’s TV programme Top Gear, presented a full sized show garden made entirely of children’s modeling clay. It was very well done, with each plant, flower, rock, bench and even water feature crafted to its correct size, through accurate observation and careful construction, but no one, not even for one second, looked at it in the same way as the other, living, show gardens. What made this show garden even more interesting was watching the reaction of the people who were looking at it. It was quite clear from the majority of their body language that they had made their decision about whether it was a ‘real’ garden or not very quickly and at a sub conscious level. In fact the decision was made so fast that few realized that there was a decision to be made or that they had made it. All they knew was that this particular garden was just an amusing talking point with nothing in it that they could relate to.

as to what should be found in a garden. It is generally considered that these expectations of a garden are formed by and based on childhood experiences or surroundings but even though this makes the criteria of individuals vastly different, every single person expects to see plants in one form or another in a garden, regardless of what else is or is not there, because plants are a part of nearly every single type of outside environment on earth. The upshot of this is that you have a very specific criteria at a sub conscious level of what should be in your garden, which you must stick to if you want it to be enjoyable. Beware of buying that ‘novelty’ something if it doesn’t fit in with your sub conscious criteria and if that sounds like I’m stating the obvious, just think back to some of the purchases you’ve made in the past. This is an extract from Sally Tierney's new book ‘Your Enjoyable Garden - The 3 essential steps to start and keep a garden that is always enjoyable and beautiful’, available January 2015. Written by Sally Tierney MSGD BSc (Hons),. She specializes in making the most of the space in small to medium sized gardens through the use of good design and the right plants. She passionately believes that no garden should become a burden on its owners and so she goes to great lengths to design a garden that fits in with the client’s life style, not the other way round. You can see pictures of successful gardens on her website here www. yorkshiregardendesigner.co.uk

I think this reaction occurred because the elements of the modelled garden did not match up to the criteria that every single person has, at a sub conscious level, 40

community The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery (Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.) Changes in booking appointments The Practice Manager Russell Gardner has been working with the practice over the past 10 months in an attempt to reduce the number of instances of appointments being booked, but not attended, and to maximise the number of appointments available for all sectors of the patient population. This has been in place since December 1st 2014 and seems to be working well. The practice is aware that it is not a ‘one size fits all’ solution but it has been implemented on balanced feedback from our patient community. The practice will be reintroducing the facility to book online appointments from April 2015, this service was suspended prior to the practice manager starting, however there is a commitment to provide this service. Patient feedback or lack of it. We often receive feedback from patients which we pass to the Practice Manager but more often when approached it is with questions of procedure. All very understandable. Most times the answers can be found on the practice website thetickhillsurgery. co.uk or thecollierysurgery.co.uk. However we all can now pass on our feelings and opinions about our medical appointments every time we have a medical appointment and do it anonymously. There are forms at reception or it can be done online, through www.iwantgreatcare.org if you need help to complete the form ask at reception. This system has been operational since November 1st but as of December not one person had given feedback.

The form asks “Did you get great care today?” and has questions such as 1 How likely are you to recommend this practice to friends and family if they need similar care or treatment? 2 What was good about your care? What could be improved? 3 Were you involved in enough decisions about your care and treatment? 4 Was the surgery clean? 5 Were the receptionists helpful? 6 It is easy to get an appointment either by telephone or at the surgery? Mistake by the Care Quality Commission Rectified The statistics and banding initially put out by CQC and reported in the local press have been corrected and altered but without much publicity. The result is that along with other surgeries Tickhill and Colliery surgery has been re-banded upwards. However no inspection or visit has yet taken place. The British Medical Association is unhappy that any banding has taken place without an inspection or visit having occurred and without any reference to the demographics of the patients on role. Reminder February 6th 2015 is The British Heart Foundation Join the Nation day. They invite us all to wear red and donate, attend or host an event to raise money for lifesaving research. WEAR IT. The always busy festive period for the choir was enjoyably rounded off by singing carols in the entrance of Tesco Extra at Balby on the 20th December. This has become an annual event where a collection is made by the “Friends of the choir” and a total of £365 was raised, which will be going to local charities. The choir extends a “big thank you” to Tesco and its customers.

Our first outing on the 29th November was to sing at Gainsbrough’s official event advertising the town’s facilities for the festive season. On the 9th December we performed carols for the residents of Oaklands care home in Bessacarr. The residents were very responsive and sang along with us to the more well-known carols. Our annual Christmas concert on the 13th December, was held at the Tickhill’s Methodist Church to a near full house. The feedback from our audience was extremely positive, reporting how they thoroughly enjoyed the mixture of both secular and religious carols together with recitals by members of the choir.

Tickhill Cricket Club Anyone walking past the ground at Tickhill Cricket Club won't fail to notice the extensive work being carried out on the new build. We are, however, still in desperate need of a sponsor for a new scoreboard - the cost would be around £2,000-£3,000. The results of the recent AGM on 15th December 2014 are: Paul Foster was unanimously elected as Chairman; Michael Jones and Paul Elton continue in their roles as Secretary and Treasurer respectively; newly appointed positions were Jim Proudley as Facilities Manager and Trevor Reeve as Fundraising Manager; Mick Ford remains as Senior Cricket Manager; Ashley Fiddler 1st XI Captain; Lee Bradshaw 2nd XI Captain and Martin Court 3rd XI Captain. Paul Foster will continue to look after the juniors as Junior Cricket Manager for the time being. We would also like to announce the exciting news that the local lad, Andrew Rennison, will be returning to our 1st X1 this coming season. **URGENT ASSISTANCE REQUIRED** TCC are in desperate need of an U9s manager to run the age group, with assistance from the Club, which is an outstanding squad this year. TICKHILL AND DISTRICT LIONS CLUB We have enjoyed a busy and very successful Christmas period including more than two weeks of escorting Santa around the local area. With the weather in our favour large numbers of children and adults turned out to enjoy seeing Santa and chatting to him or one of his helpers. Many youngsters left letters advising him that they had been very good and telling him what they would like for Christmas. Our sincere thanks for the generous donations made by so many local residents and children. Many thanks also to the Pentagon Group for the loan of the Grand Jeep Cherokee which pulled Santa’s sleigh round in fine style. Thanks are also due to the many local businesses which donated prizes for our Grand Christmas Draw held at the Carpenter’s Arms in Tickhill on Tuesday 16th December. In all there were 72 prizes in the draw. The willing support of local businesses means a lot to us all. With chocolate Easter Eggs already ordered we will have time during January and February to consider where we can provide financial support for worthy causes and projects which may improve the lives of others, especially in our local area. Back in the Autumn we assisted a disabled student at Rossington All Saints School with his aim of progressing to national standard in table tennis. A grant of £500 has enabled Adam Gittings, who suffers from Aspergers Syndrome, to travel to Slough, Harlow and Liverpool where he won Gold Silver and Bronze medals in the Slough Disability Grand Prix, two Golds in the BATTS Essex Disability Grand Prix and Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the Merseyside Disability Open. These performances have enhanced Adam’s ranking as the number one Class 11 Junior player in the country and number two Class 11 Senior player. Adam has been offered a place in September 2015 at the Bristol Table Tennis Academy where he would receive coaching from international players and coaches alongside his further education studying Sport and Exercise Science at HND level. He plays locally in Doncaster, Sheffield, Gainsborough and Scunthorpe and has tournaments coming up in the next couple of months in Southampton and Bristol. Adam’s parents continue to look for sponsorship to facilitate travel and accommodation for tournaments and can be contacted by email on gittingspaul@btinternet.com During December we made a donation of £700 to the Surestart Centre in Rossington to cover the cost of twenty hampers to assist local families over Christmas. PAST THREE O’CLOCK For their Christmas concert Tickhill Music Society invited The Doncaster Waites to entertain them. For those not in the know, waites were employed by the borough to act as watchmen, marking the hours of the night with a call or a few notes on their instruments – hence the carol “Past Three O’clock”. In time they became more accomplished and were used as the town band to play on ceremonial occasions.

For ages 14-24. Please email Lauren Townsend at ltownsend@thepoint.org.uk or call 01302 558069 if you would like to book a place. T

For their visit to Tickhill the five members of the Doncaster Waites came dressed in 17th century costume and played with great skill on an astonishing array of instruments – shawms and crumhorns (early ancestors of the oboe), recorders, English bagpipes, a sackbut (a primitive type of trombone), a hurdy gurdy, and a tabor (akin to a side drum). They produced an engagingly earthy sound, quite unlike the sophisticated sound that concert-goers have become accustomed to. The carols likewise came from the 16th and 17th centuries, and from various corners of Europe, and were introduced by the Waites in an informative and amusing way. Who knew that “Gaudete”, published in 1582, became a popular hit in 1972 in the hands of Steeleye Span? The second half of the concert was time for audience participation, with the audience being coached in two early carols as well as singing more familiar Victorian ones. It was a highly enjoyable opening to the festive season.

Sorry Joan...no chance! We wanted to let everyone know that she has contributed much to the local community including 34 years helping with the Brownies, organising “holiday clubs” for local children during school holidays, helping with the jumble sales who raise funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and a founder member of the Community Centre (Village Hall) committee. Wadworth Parish Council also nominated Joan (along with Heather Cleland) for the High Sheriff Award for Services to the Community some years ago. Tickhill Town Council - FEBRUARY 2015

At this time of year the Council work is mainly centred on finance and budgets. I have received confirmation from D.M.B.C. there will be no local capping or levies on the Precept in the next financial year (2015-2016). Our only source of income is from the Precept, a Parish Grant and income from the Pavilion. We have no contribution from Commercial rates. The Parish Grant this year has been cut by approx 10%. However I am sure with continued prudence we can hold our precept to the same rate. During the next few days we will be holding a Budget meeting and it is my wish to the councillors to cap the letting rates of the Pavilion to £8.00 per hour for yet another year: the fourth year in succession. This year I obtained my enhanced DBS certificate which means in future, should the situation arise; we will not require D.M.B.C. to supervise the summer activities. Budgets’ allowing I hope to be able to offer for another year, diversionary activities in the summer holidays, in conjunction with activities for Mums, Dads, carers and Grandparents centred on Digital Inclusion, a new venture in partnership with Sir Thomas Wharton Community College/Hill Top Centre. I am very hopeful of this particular venture being a huge success. As you will all be aware we have a volunteer litter picker/ keep Tickhill Tidy man and this is proving to be most successful, and through careful management of funds Tickhill Town Council have been able to purchase extra equipment which has made his work more effective. Many residents have commented on the improvement to Tickhill and on behalf of everyone I wish to thank him for all his hard work. This last year we have introduced the Alison Award to our Young person of the Year Award and Community Service 58

Award and I would like you start thinking about anyone you feel could be a worthy recipient of any of the Awards in 2015. Please consider it carefully and make your recommendations to me via letter or e mail and these will be presented to the panel for a decision towards the back end of the year with a presentation in December 2015. I know its early days to start thinking about this but its surprising how quickly the time goes by. Even if the person you nominated last year was not the winner please try again, this year they may be the recipient. I have had many complaints about parking on pavements again. Please could we try to keep the pavements clear and give pedestrians access to walk safely? On a final note I wish to mention the hard work which our Councillors have put in to the Community. Please remember they are not paid for this work and do what they do purely for the love of the Community. Please help them all you can and if you think you would like to be a Councillor the Local Elections are in May 2015. If you would like to make a booking at the Pavilion, please contact Jamie on 07591179658. If he is unable to answer please send a text and he will respond. Unfortunately at the time of writing this article we have only one caretaker as Andrea decided to leave us to follow her own pursuits. Thank you Andrea for the service you gave the Community. If you would like to be considered for the position of caretaker please contact me as soon as possible.
