I do hope that readers have had an enjoyable Christmas and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. As always, I planned to be organised well ahead for Christmas this year so that I didn’t find myself rushing around, working late and wrapping on Christmas Eve! Unfortunately, like all the best laid plans, as I write this with just 10 days left to go, I have 5 magazines to finish, cards to write, shopping still to do, not forgetting 2 bedrooms mid-way through being decorated. But at least I’ve not moved house this December, last year was the last time I will do that in December! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this I will be enjoying a few days of relaxation. The February issue will be delivered to you late January. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th January. 2018 may be upon us by the time you read this, if not it won’t be far away, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers and their families a very happy New Year, I hope the year ahead will be not only happy but a memorable one for you. Wishing you a Peaceful 2018. Enjoy January and I will be back in a months’ time with your February magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

The RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre is located on the Great North Road, near Bawtry, DN10 6DE, and is open six days a week 11am to 4pm (closed Wednesdays). You can raise funds for the Animal Centre in many ways – bring in unwanted clothes, toys, bedding, curtains, books and bric a brac; make a mobile donation (text SYAC14 £5 to 70070) or shop at the Centre’s enlarged Pet Store. Learn to love your living space Whether this is the living room, lounge or sitting room whatever you call it, sometimes our living space can be underappreciated or overused and in need of some TLC and this week, I have three great design ideas that can bring a fresh new look to your living room. Inject a burst of colour With the winter months during in this is the perfect time to inject your home with a pop of colour. Giving even just one wall a lick of paint will instantly brighten up the entire room.

Introducing different textiles and materials Updating some of your home accessories with different textiles and materials can really add some depth and chic to your living space and give your room a completely new feel. 7U\ XSGDWLQJ D OLJKW ¿ WWLQJ RU DGGLQJ VRPH VWRUDJH baskets that are not only practical storage solution but can also be a stylish feature within your room too. Interior trend: Key statement pieces to watch out for this season includes woven textiles such as wicker or bamboo alongside marble and copper accessories.

Love those soft furnishings Bringing in new soft furnishings is an easy way to update your living space. Top tip: If your cushions are recent just change the cushion covers there is no need to spend extra money when it’s not required and also you can swap them back again when you fancy a change. Or why not try adding an elaborate trim to an existing cushion cover. You don’t need to be an excellent sewer to do this just follow these two easy steps. 1. Remove the pad from the cushion cover and pin your chosen braiding around the top edge of the cover. 2. For the corners, neatly fold the braiding at 90 degrees to create a right angle and pin into place. Then it’s just a case of hand stitching all the way around with a contrasting thread. To Everyone A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR. 2017 was very hard on our finance department. Lots of our resident dogs needed very expensive surgery, but luckily all came through well and some have now arrived in their forever homes, they have been given that special new start that they deserve. Our Vets bill for the year was over £55,000 so this money has to come from somewhere, we rely heavily on the generosity of the local people in the area and we will not survive without you. We receive no government funding therefore we must make the most of all fundraising events throughout the year. Unfortunately, the £20,000 funding that we have received for many years from Blue Cross has ended this year so we will struggle to stay afloat without your help. All fundraisers work so hard thinking up new ideas to raise money, however we badly need your support to make all our fundraising successful. We will be holding a May Ball at the Crown Hotel on the 18th May so please save the date, it promises to be a fabulous evening and we hope you will be there to support us. We will also be having our usual Dog Walk and Dog Show during the year, so watch this space for dates.

Finding a forever home

Thank you to everyone that helped make our resident dogs and cats happy on Christmas day with lots of shoe boxes filled with toys and treats. Also thank you’ s to everyone involved in loving and caring for the dogs and cats in their care here, particularly over the Christmas period. Also, volunteers taking time out of their hectic family Christmas to walk our dogs at the Sanctuary over the festive period. You are all stars. We have re-homed over 500 dogs and 250 cats throughout 2017 which has to be a fantastic achievement. If you are looking for that special pet to share your life please come to see us we will be happy to have a chat and point you in the right direction. Don’t forget we have a shop area in our reception so call and have a coffee and a look around there’s lots to see. Our opening hours are 2-4 Monday-Friday. Closed Tuesday. Sat-Sun 1-4

Name: Ben Male Sex: Age: 6 years Came into care: Sept 2017 Good with dogs: ? Good with cats: ? Good with children: Older I was adopted from Mayflower as a kitten and have spent the last 5 ½ years living in a very happy home with my Mum. Unfortunately she has been unwell lately and feels unable to care for me properly any more so here I am to look for a new home. I am a loving little chap but can be a little feisty at times so any children should be older. I have also been used to going outside so my new home must be in a quiet area or have a secure garden for me to explore. Don’t pass me by – ask to meet me.

Name: Rosa Female Sex: Age: 18 months Came into care: Apr 2017 Good with dogs: Yes Good with cats: Not Tested Good with children: 8+ Rosa is shy and nervous around new people, but is loving and kind once she gets to know you. She is very gentle and playful and loves to go for walks. She has proven, once over her shyness, to be very trainable. Due to her shyness she will need a quieter home. Sian started to knit scarves, beautiful cowl scarves, which she sold to raise funds for Weston Park +RVSLWDO LQ 6KHI¿HOG 6LDQ¶V IDPLO\ KDYH FORVH OLQNV to Weston Park, as the hospital has helped their family in recent years. This year Sian has been busy knitting friendship bracelets – we are sure that Weston Park will once again be grateful for her donations raised through the sale of the bracelets. Sian does all of this very modestly. We are very proud of Sian, as are her family and friends and we were delighted when she received the Young Person of the Year Award.

Everything’s coming up ….sprouts. We are delighted to report that as Christmas approaches there will be no problem with a shortage of sprouts at school this year. Our keen gardeners have managed to produce plenty in time for our school Christmas Dinner on Friday 22nd December. Well done indeed to our gardeners! 20 TICKHILL TODAY

Created in 1826, the engravings were commissioned by his friend, the artist John Linnell and depict Job’s faith being tested by Satan. Blake was repeatedly inspired by the Book of Job, viewing Job’s trials and eventual spiritual rebirth as parallel to his own creative struggles. And until 17 March, also in The Graves, Dan Holdsworth ‘Mapping the Limits of Space’ presents the UK premiere of artist Dan Holdsworth’s newest series of images, Continuous Topography, which go on show alongside some of his most significant works from the past seven years. What do we ‘do’?! A patient of mine recently enquired as to whether or not we ‘do’ fingers. He knew we ‘did’ backs and sports injuries but wasn’t sure about fingers! So, what exactly do we ‘do’?! Basically physiotherapists treat any part of the body that is causing a problem…it could be painful, stiff, tingly, sore, weak… It can make more sense to think of Physiotherapists as Human Engineers. The human body is one large machine which may, for a variety of reasons, develop a dysfunctional part or parts which in turn (especially if left for long enough) may have a knock on effect creating problems/stress elsewhere in the system. It’s the job of the Physiotherapist to ascertain where the fault lies, why it occurred in the first place, what needs to be done to remedy the situation and what needs to change to prevent the problem recurring. One of the many things I love about my work is the variety so thankfully I can say “Yes, we ‘do’ fingers!” and over the past few weeks I’ve also seen patients with; • an arthritic knee • a stiff neck after a car accident • a painful foot causing problems with acrobatic tumbling • a sore hip causing problems getting comfy in bed • a tingly arm • low back pain for the first time • low back pain for many years • headaches • a painful knee after running with a poor movement pattern So, if you feel that part of your body is not moving properly, is causing uncomfortable symptoms of one description or another or is limiting how you use your body then Physiotherapy could benefit you.

Could yoga help you improve your health in 2018? For many, the end of one year and start of the next, is a time for reflection and aspiration. We look back at what we’ve done and think about what we’d like to do or achieve for the New Year. The truth is, however, no matter what any of us want to do – we need our health to be able to enjoy life to the full. My Mum used to say, you can have all the money in the world, but without your health you have nothing. She was a wise lady!

Shona Garner is a fully qualified, experienced teacher, running regular classes, and 6 week programmes (for beginners; for healthy back and core, and for stress) in the Tickhill, Cantley and Bawtry areas. If you’d like information about any of these courses then contact Shona on shona@yogaover45.co.uk or Tel: 07904 262877, or visit: www.yogaover45.co.uk

As a yoga teacher with a special interest in teaching students in mid-life or later years, I find many of my students have niggling pains or conditions which, if neglected, would hinder their plans and prevent them from living life to the full. Getting older does not automatically have to come with getting sicker. Yoga can help you improve your strength, flexibility and your general well-being and, unlike many forms of exercise, is accessible to just about anyone – regardless of age or physical health. From gentle stretches to movements which help strengthen your muscles, improve your posture and relieve the stress or tension so many of us can experience in day to day life, learning and practising yoga might be one of the most beneficial things you could do for yourself in 2018. Whether you make New Year resolutions or not, you have plans; things you love to do; people you want to spend time with – and the last thing you need is your health to prevent you from doing those things. Maybe giving yoga is worth a try? And the beauty of yoga is, once you learn some basics, you need no special equipment – and you can practise easily at home: honestly, a few minutes a day can make a significant difference to your health and general well-being. So, search out a class you feel might be suitable for you – try more than one teacher or style – sometimes it takes time to find the teacher who is the right “fit” for you – but it’s worth looking! And know that you could be on the way to forming a new habit which can massively change your health for the better!

Tickhill Bowling Club

The Patient Participation Group Continued...

January is already upon us, but that just means we are getting closer to the bowling season. Hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas and a wishing you all a very Happy New Year.

• Drink less alcohol Although a few glasses of wine in the evening helps you fall asleep, you sleep less deeply after drinking alcohol. The next day you’ll be tired, even if you sleep a full eight hours. Cut down on alcohol before bedtime. You’ll get a better night’s rest and have more energy. The NHS recommends that men and women should not regularly drink more than 14 units a week.

Happy New Year! I would like to wish all our parents, carers, students and community a happy and prosperous New Year. As many of you are aware, I joined the ranks of the retired this Christmas. It is with both great sadness and immense pride that I leave the Sir Thomas Wharton community. I have been extremely privileged to serve this community during two periods over 14 years, and especially as Headteacher. I am confident that the partnership with Maltby Learning Trust will accelerate improvement and provide our young people with the outstanding education they deserve. Mrs Bootman joins as Associate Principal and with the support of Mrs Nash as Executive Leader and our Academy leaders, will build on recent developments and raise standards and outcomes for all. Thank you for the many good wishes I have received and I look forward to seeing our fantastic school go from strength to strength! Mr Keith Binks

Community Awards Tickhill Town Council’s Community Awards were once again presented by Caroline Flint MP at the Mayor’s Reception on December 2rd. These Awards not only highlight the worthiness of the winners but also demonstrate the gratitude of the SHRSOH RI 7LFNKLOO IRU WKRVH ZKR XQVHOČ´ VKO\ VHUYH to promote and improve the town. Despite fewer nominations this year, the judges had a demanding but enjoyable task to select the winners. The Community Award, given to an adult for an outstanding contribution to the community, was presented to Karen Holmes. Karen has been the force behind the transformation of the old Tickhill Institute into a Community Hub, now known as The Tavern. Although still in its infancy, Karen hopes that The Hub will eventually serve all of Tickhill by providing facilities appropriate to the needs of residents across a wide age range. An accomplished safe cracker... Our November speaker was Michael Fowler, a retired police inspector who related the life story of Albert Hattersley, an accomplished safe cracker, local villain and his various escapades. These included breaking into Co-op stores all over the north, including both Tickhill and Harworth, before moving to London and involvement with the East End gangs. When summoned he would catch the train to London, crack the safe for them, and catch the train back north. The London police never gave a thought to someone coming in from elsewhere, and he made a great deal of money in this period. 58 TICKHILL TODAY

Perhaps the most sensible thing he ever did was to refuse their invitation to be part of the Great Train Robbery. His experience gained in shot-putting in the mines had given him access and knowledge of explosives, but in 40 years of safe-breaking he spent 21 of those years in jail. So perhaps crime doesn’t pay after all! We begin the New Year on Thursday 18th January, with a talk by Tim Mulroy from Rotherham, whose relative was known as ‘The British Schindler.’ We meet in the Methodist School Room, Doors open 7.00pm. and visitors are always welcome. YOUR COUNCILLORS NIGEL CANNINGS

Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - January 2018

Tickhill Town Council wishes you all a Happy and Peaceful New Year.

line representations can be made by visiting D.M.B.C. planning website.

2018 seems to have loomed in from nowhere and it is hardly believable that we are into another year.

If you see a planning application followed by PD, this means it is permitted development and Tickhill Town Council will not be consulted.

Tickhill Town Council reminds you all to take care during these winter months and keep warm. Tickhill Town Council wish to welcome Graham Mickley to the team as the Pavilion Manager. At present the Town Council website is currently being up-dated but should be up and running in the New Year, meanwhile if you could either look at the notice boards or contact the clerk meeting dates etc. will be made available. Planning: This will always be a contentious issue and Tickhill Town Council urges you all to be the eyes and ears for the Council. If you see planning consents not being adhered to, please report these matters to D.M.B.C. Residents are urged to come to meetings and make comments as Councillors need to know how neighbours and residents feel towards planning applications. Sometimes the applications are for the better and a voice of support will determine the recommendation but the Councillors need to know also if you object. Residents can make their own representations by e mail or letter to D.M.B.C . Please try to quote the planning application number. On 62 TICKHILL TODAY

Further help on planning can be found at www.planninghelp.org.uk. D.M.B.C. contact telephone number is 01302 736000 or tsi@ doncaster.gov.uk or by writing to Planning, Development Management, Civic Office, Waterdale, Doncaster, DN1 3BU If you “GOOGLE” DMBC planning you will go to their planning portal and by clicking on “agree to terms and conditions” you will have access to all planning. The local Town and Borough Councillors are always willing to help, contact details to be found on this page. Minutes: These are displayed on the website as soon as possible after the council meetings and very often within 48hours. Good practice according to Y.L.C.A. is within 10 days! However in the absence of the website these can be obtained from the clerk. Council meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month in the morning at 10.30am, if there are planning applications, and on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7.00pm, both at the Pavilion Tithes Lane. Minutes of the previous council meetings are always available, but if copies are required they do
