Welcome to

the JANUARY 2015 edition

And so we welcome another year … 2015 I do hope that readers have had an enjoyable Christmas and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. By the time you read this it will be the last few days of December or possibly just into January. As I write though it is still 2 weeks until Christmas and I am not really any more prepared for Christmas than I was when I wrote a month ago! Despite having far fewer Christmas commitments this year now that all my children are at secondary school and the days of nativity plays, school carol services and Christmas fairs are over, I seem to be just as busy as ever. I have spent some time during December making plans for 2015 and setting some goals both business and personal. Did you know that goals that are written down have a 95% higher chance of achieving the desired outcome, yet only 3%- 5% of the population have any written goals. It isn’t something I have ever really done before so I will let you know later in the year whether I am a convert! Despite all the planning I am still no further forward with deciding how to celebrate the 10th birthday of Today Publications which is quickly approaching!

community The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery

News from the National Association of Patients Groups

(Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.) Practice Response The practice has, as promised, responded to questions by patients regarding pre-bookable appointments. The response was given to the PPG in November using statistics from September and October. The following figures relate to the number of appointments used at The Tickhill and Colliery Surgery in the month of September and October. Appointments used Prebooked Same day Same day Within 2 days Within one week Within two weeks Within 1 Month Within 2 Months

SEPTEMBER 4152 44.6% 55.4% 2300 242 743 474 295 98

OCTOBER 4602 49.6% 50.4% 2321 303 753 766 374 85

Please note that the Saturday pre booked appointments for the Influenza Clinic account for the increased number of appointments in October. As can be seen the figures show a split in Pre-bookable and same day bookings. The following figures show the number of appointments booked in October but where the patients did not attend. Tickhill = 100 appointments or 21.5 hours appointments or 15.5 hours . . . . . . . . . .

Colliery = 68

Please note that the colliery surgery has roughly one third of the total number of patients on role and Tickhill two thirds. This means that in October the number of failed to attend at the Colliery Surgery was proportionately much higher than Tickhill. Reminder February 6th 2015 is The British Heart Foundation Join the Nation day. They invite us all to wear red and donate, attend or host an event to raise money for lifesaving research. WEAR IT. BEAT IT. FIGHT FOR EVERY HEARTBEAT. Free fundraising Kits are available at:bhf.org.uk/red or you can call 0300 330 0645 Catherine Fletcher is organising an event at Bircotes Library to support this Heart Health Nation Day. The NHS Five Year Forward View was published in November this was a joint production by six NHS organisations (Monitor, NHS England, Public Health England, Trust Development Authority, Care Quality Commission, Health Education England), Particularly noteworthy is the lack of any reference to privatisation or competition – neither word appears once in the 40-page document. The document highlights that the biggest challenge to the NHS, beyond debates about money and models, is the behaviour and lifestyle that fuels rising demand. “…the future health of millions of children, the sustainability of the NHS, and the economic prosperity of Britain all now depend on a radical upgrade in prevention and public health. The NHS will therefore now back hard-hitting national action on obesity, smoking, alcohol and other major health risks. We will help develop and support new workplace incentives to promote employee health and cut sickness-related unemployment. “ Also highlighted is the idea that people should have a stronger voice in decisions about their health and care, and that services should better reflect their needs and preferences. This has been a policy goal of politicians and senior policy-makers in health for at least 20 years. Patients want it, and the evidence shows that when they are involved, decisions are better, health and health outcomes improve, and resources are allocated more efficiently.” Implications of this for your GP Practice The Five Year Forward View acknowledges the problems facing primary care, particularly the “severe strain” on general practice but states that any new money will be used to start up initiatives where there are signs of innovation and willingness to change. “One new option will permit groups of GPs to combine with nurses, other community health services, hospital specialists and perhaps mental health and social care to create integrated out-of-hospital care - the Multispecialty Community Provider. The other will see hospitals running the show. “A further new option will be the integrated hospital and primary care provider - Primary and Acute Care Systems combining for the first time general practice and hospital services, similar to the Accountable Care Organisations now developing in other countries too.” You can contact the PPG via the comments boxes in both surgeries or at tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo.com

New Year, New Home,

New Way

The New Year brings new hope for homeowners looking to make a fresh start and climb the property ladder, as resolutions and post-Christmas blues spur buyers to begin their property search early. Marketing property promptly in the New Year means owners can benefit from the ‘spring bounce’ when sales traditionally increase between March and May. This will be especially true in early 2015, according to recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which demonstrate the strength of the market. Excluding London and the South East, UK house prices increased by 9.1 per cent in the 12 months to September 2014. Graeme Naish, co-founder of Open Door Auctions, a family-run property business specialising in residential sales, comments: “Winter is typically seen as a bad time of year for the property market because of a number of factors - the weather’s bad, money is tight and people are preoccupied with Christmas preparations. Once Christmas is over and the January blues set in, people start thinking about the year ahead, making decisions and taking positive steps forward.” The New Year can provide an opportune time for people looking to sell property, as buyers kick-start their househunting in earnest.

• sĞƌƟĐĂůƐ • ZŽůůĞƌƐ • ZŽŵĂŶ • sĞŶĞƟĂŶƐ • tŽŽĚ sĞŶĞƟĂŶƐ

“Your home can actually be at its most inviting in the winter time and this can have a very positive and inspiring effect on potential buyers,” added Graeme. “There’s nothing better than stepping in from the cold to a warm and hospitable house. January and February are great times for people to market their property.” According to a recent study, buying or selling a house is viewed as the most stressful part of modern life - more stressful than bankruptcy, getting divorced or being made redundant. For this reason, a growing number of people are looking to auctions and other, less traditional channels to achieve a sale. Indeed, in the first six months of 2014, there was a massive 135 per cent increase in sales by auction compared to the first six months of 2013. Competitive by nature, auctions can drive up the price of a property, are legally binding and require deposits to be paid on exchange. Around 75 per cent of properties sold at UK auctions are completed and exchanged within as little as four weeks, much quicker than the national average. In its first two years of business, Open Door Auctions has hosted 20 auctions and sold 250 homes – worth more than £30million to local residents. For more information about the next property auction or to arrange a free property valuation, call the team at Open Door Auctions on 01777 712 614 or email help@opendoorauctions.co.uk www.opendoorauctions.co.uk

community Hello Everyone and a Happy New Year We hope you had a great Christmas, but here at the sanctuary whether it’s Christmas, New Year or the weekend work has to continue as the dogs and cats still need taking care of. We have had lots of street collections over the Christmas period so thank you everyone that contributed to help make our collections a success. This is a very important part of what we must do in order to survive. Money is always tight, but this year we have noticed a huge difference in the amount of money that comes in. We desperately need to increase our coffers; otherwise we will not be here for the future. One way people can help is to donate a little each month by Direct Debit this will make sure that we can continue with the good work we do here. You can also help by volunteering, there are many ways you can help us either by dog walking, fund raising or take a look at our face book page for other ways of helping us. Would anyone be interested in fostering an elderly dog? We have at least 2 or 3 that just need a loving home to make their last years special. Even though they are well cared for it is still sad to see them end their days in a sanctuary when they have lived most of their lives being someone’s special pet. If you would like to know more please call us. We also have also taken in a lovely white German Shepherd who is around 3 years old. Unfortunately she has had a very bad skin allergy and has no fur on her body at all.

Finding a forever home She is living with a foster carer at the moment and with the correct medication we hope we will soon be able to find someone to love her and give her a permanent home. We have had some wonderful news Sainsbury’s are coming to Bawtry and as well as creating jobs they are making a firm pledge of support to local organisations. We are extremely happy to say our Sanctuary will be one of the first to benefit from this support and we are looking forward to working closely with them. The store is to open on the 8th January and we will be there to wish them well. We would like to thank everyone again for the support they have given us during our Christmas street collections. Please come to see us if you are thinking of adopting a dog or cat and we will be happy to point you in the right direction. A big thank you to all Purple Vouchers office staff Jackie, Julie, Dave, Geoff, Fay and Milly for the support on Santa Dash Sunday. Your support is very important to us. Thank you Our Sanctuary number is 01302 711330 please leave a message and we will call you back.

Both girls were extremely hungry and had probably been abandoned. Despite exhaustive attempts their owners couldn’t be found and Mayflower were contacted for help. Both girls are very loving although Esme is the most confident of the pair. Elsa just needs a little more time to get to know you. Estfeld School– Community Spirit Alive and Well at Estfeld We are very proud to report that of two of our pupils and a member of staff received an award in recognition of their services to the local community at the Tickhill Town Council Awards in December. The pupils recognised were Toby Rainbow and Faith Bartram, alongside our Teaching Assistant, Carolyn Welborn. School is extremely proud of all three, as are their friends and relatives. They are a wonderful example to others and thoroughly deserve this recognition of their achievements. Congratulations and very well done. Toby is an active fundraiser for the Tickhill Scouts. He has been involved in many fundraising events during recent years, giving up his free time to do so. He is very modest about the work that he does and sees it as nothing out of the ordinary; always happy to get involved and to help. Toby received a certificate and gift token in recognition of his work. Well done, Toby! Faith was awarded the tremendous accolade of Young Person of the Year 2014. In awarding the plaque, Margaret Cannings-Clough said of Faith, “Faith loves to support others and the community; Faith thinks about others before herself, which is a tremendous quality and does so with good grace. She is hard-working and friendly,

always willing to help others.” Faith has raised funds for The British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research as well as being an active member of the Tickhill Together Committee. In November it was Faith who planned the “Penny for the Guy” fundraiser so that she could use the monies raised to bring the reindeer to Tickhill as part of the Tickhill Late Night Shopping event. They were a great success and enjoyed by old and young alike. Congratulations, Faith! Mrs Welborn works at school as a Teaching Assistant and has also been a member of the Scouting community and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for many years. She has devoted untold hours in the evenings, weekends and school holidays to help young people to develop their own skills, values and attitudes that will help them to become responsible members of their communities. She has also been involved in organising outdoor and adventurous activities for the Tickhill Scouts including several international camp visits. The Scouts are also often prominent, lending a hand at village and community events, often under the direction of Carolyn. Carolyn also received a certificate of recognition from the Town Council. Well done, Mrs Welborn! As a school we try to get involved in raising funds for others locally and also for national charities throughout the year. Our pupils and their parents are very supportive and over the course of each year achieve a great deal together. The whole school is very happy to hear that Toby, Faith and Mrs Welborn have received the recognition that they deserve from their local community and we hope that they will continue to inspire others; we are bursting with pride!

? Is your Physiotherapist really a Physiotherapist? If you are seeing a Physiotherapist then you are probably going to say yes. Sadly, not all of you will be correct. Since 2003, Physiotherapist has been a protected title. This means that anyone claiming to be a Physiotherapist or claiming to offer Physiotherapy treatment is required by law to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The HCPC is the UK’s independent health regulator. To register with the HCPC not only do you have to supply proof of your original Physiotherapy qualification (these days this is an honours degree), but also provide evidence of your continued professional development which justifies and proves you meet the minimum professional standards. The HCPC register is the register you would be ‘struck off’ from in the case of misconduct.

Call on 01302 511755 or email info@blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk Blizard Physiotherapy Limited, Bircotes DN11 8DE

Claiming or implying you are a Physiotherapist when you are not registered with the HCPC is against the law and yet this continues to happen. The ONLY way to ensure you are safe and under the care of a qualified and registered Physiotherapist is to CHECK THE REGISTER. Before seeing any Physiotherapist please log on to the HCPC website at www.hcpc-uk.org.uk All you need is the Physiotherapists name and if they are registered then you will find their details come up. Alternatively, any Physiotherapist should be happy to provide you with their unique HCPC registration number which can then be verified at the same website. This simple step takes just a few minutes but it ensures your safety and prevents unqualified people practising in the name of Physiotherapy and tarnishing our profession.

St Mary’s School

Christmas at St Mary’s School. Christingle Service

Christmas in schools is always a busy, hectic but exciting time. On Wednesday December 3rd Alderson and Clarel, the Year 2 classes at St Mary’s School led the second Christingle Service for the School. On Monday afternoon Reverend Chris came into school and every child made their own Christingle in preparation for the service on Wednesday. A Christingle is a symbolic object, used in the advent services of many Christian denominations which has its origins in the Moravian Church. In the past Churches gave each child a lighted candle wrapped in a red ribbon, with a prayer that said “Lord Jesus, kindle a flame in these dear children’s hearts”. Christingle services were introduced to the Church of England, in 1968 where the custom spread quickly. Christingle services are usually celebrated sometime around Christmas during Advent. St Mary’s Church holds a Christingle service every year but this is only the second time the school has held one. 22

There were readings, drama and prayers from the Year 2 as they explained the meaning of the Christingle as well as a performance by St Mary’s school choir. St Mary’s school Christingle Service has become an annual event. Maybe next year you can join the school or church as they celebrate Christingle. Not only did the Year 2 children lead the Christingle service but they have been busy preparing for their Christmas production “Baubles A Tree-Mendous Nativity.” This explains the true meaning of Christmas to a group of children who are so excited about Christmas that they forget the true meaning of Christmas. Fortunately for the children Mr Potts their caretaker helps them to understand that Christmas is about the greatest gift of all.

Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club “B****y January Again!” Those of you who remember the songs of Flanders and Swann (and most Probus members probably do) may recognise this as the last line of their song of the weather which took a particularly downbeat view of the British weather throughout the year. Downbeat they may have been but downbeat Probus is not. The club is flourishing, meetings are well attended, we have good speakers and the bar and restaurant are just downstairs from our meeting room at the Millstone. Sounds like a winning formula? Come and try it for yourself as a visitor. We meet at 10.00am on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month but be warned, most people who come as visitors cannot resist the temptation of membership! Our programme for the next three months is as follows: 8th January 22nd January 12th February 26th February 12th March 26th March

AGM followed by “Codes, Cyphers and Enigmas” by Steve Payne “Day out with the National Trust” by John Hoare. “How I wrote a book on Hitler youth” by Phil Baker “That’s my lot” by Peter Young. “Railways in a Cornish Landscape” by Stephen Gay Ladies Lunch. (Members and wives/partners only)

Something for everybody, come and join us and escape temporarily the b****y winter ( with apologies of course to Flanders and Swann). T

Les Francophiles de Tickhill January brings our French film night: we start with hot chocolate to warm us up and then view without interruption. Following the success over the past two years of showing films based on Pagnol's childhood in Provence, we have chosen one with a similar theme: "La Fille du Puisatier" ( The Well-Digger's Daughter) is a 2011 remake of Pagnol's original 1930's version, directed by Daniel Auteuil, who played "Ugolin" in the 1986 version of "Manon des Sources".

TICKHILL AND DISTRICT LIONS CLUB May I start by wishing you all a Happy New Year and saying a big thank you to everyone who supported our Grand Christmas Draw which was held on 16th December. To the companies who donated prizes, the many people who provided items for the draw, the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell the tickets and of course to all of you who purchased the tickets –thank you. If you were one of the many lucky winners then we have probably already been in touch but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale. During December we escorted Santa on his new sleigh round most of the roads within the Tickhill and District area giving out hundreds of Christmas cards and receiving many cards and wish lists. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations. At Tickhill and District Lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs so you can be sure that every penny you donate will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year.

We meet as usual on the first Wednesday of the month, that is January 7th at 7.30pm in the Parish Room, Tickhill. Visitors are welcome at a charge of £3. For further details please contact Edwin Simpson on 742714 or Janet Erridge So, thank you once again from Tickhill and District Lions and from all the people that your donations will help. At Home-Start we believe parents play the key role in creating a secure childhood for their children. It’s just sometimes they need a bit of help!

Start home-visiting volunteer we would love to hear from you. We offer a highly regarded Preparation Course which is held one day a week over nine weeks. Volunteers are usually parents themselves, or have parenting experience, and bring with them personal experience and skills. They are friendly, approachable, reliable and can be trusted by parents to listen without being judgemental.

Once linked with a family you will visit them on a weekly basis for 2-3 hours providing support with a wide range of difficulties such as providing an extra pair of hands for parents with twins or being a friend to a single parent who feels isolated. Seeds of Change How many seeds have you eaten today? Probably more than you realise. As a nation, we consume tons of them every day and whether they are ground to make our bread, mushed to accompany our chips or sprinkled on our burger bun, seeds play an important role in our diet … as well as in our garden! Most of the seed heads that were left over from autumn have now fallen over, disintegrated, or been eaten by hungry birds, so as part of my ‘outdoor housework’ I’m cutting them down to ground level before the new growth begins to emerge next month. The stately seed heads of Stipa gigantea looked fantastic for such a long period of time, as did the erect stems of Calamagrostis ‘Karl Forester’, but even these have been defeated by the wind. It may be cold outside, but now is the perfect time for planning what to grow this year, from seed of course! Over recent years the popularity of growing your own vegetables has meant that veg seed sales have overtaken those of traditional flowers, but you really can’t beat the satisfaction of plants from seed. The first plants I ever grew were Snap Dragons. I was fifteen, and I found the packet in the back of a drawer (presumably they had been stuck 36

to a box of cereal at some stage). I diligently followed the instructions for sowing and placed them on top of my wardrobe (I’m not quite sure why I did that). What happened next really was a miracle. They germinated! It was hard to believe that the old seed, uneven layer of compost, wardrobe location and over watered soil, produced a rash of new seedlings. It wasn’t long before they had grown to around 2 inches high and bent towards the light, narrowly avoiding the artex ceiling!

enough energy to push new leaves through the soil. Prick out singly once large enough to handle and grow on somewhere frost-free, before gradually hardening off ready for life outdoors. Until next time, happy winter gardening.

I potted them on and they produced the most beautiful range of colours all summer long, and that was the moment I became hooked on gardening. It wasn’t really a surprise that they germinated, as that’s what seeds are designed to do. They can survive in their dormant state for years, and because there are often more seeds per packet than you know what to do with, I always sow just a few more than I need and return the rest to a sealed container in the fridge. Stored like this they keep for years. To give them the best start in life, most seeds require just a tray of compost and some warmth. Large seeds should be covered over with compost, but small seeds left uncovered as they often don’t have

Minister Dear Friends,

It’s New Year again and to some of us, it’s a time to reflect upon the past and look forward to the future. Sometimes, some of us find it difficult to know what we need to do to achieve the best in the coming year. I wonder if we can apply the advice the Apostle Paul gave to the Christians in Rome about 2000 years ago. In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly. Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honouring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically (Romans 12: 6-9) (New Living Translation). Paul’s advice is that just be yourself and do the good things that you love doing. Sometimes, it may be difficult to do them but Christians believe that prayer helps us to ask for assistance from God. He hears us and helps us achieve what we need to do with his Spirit. You may wonder whether you have to pray for hours or days before God hears. Not at all! Christians believe that prayer is a conversation with God. So as part of being yourself, you can have a frequent conversation with God. It can be a few minutes or hours, depending on your availability. God is always waiting for you to show up. You may wonder whether he will answer. My response is, God’s answer may be “yes, I’ll give it to you now or later”. It may also be “no, it’s not right for you now”. It can be “wait for a while” or a final answer is “have you thought of this better alternative”? This year, as part of your resolution or determination to change things in life for the better, I wonder if I can suggest to you to consider frequent conversations with God. He is waiting for you to show up. Have a blessed New Year.

GO MO AT JONES & CO Facial hair has been a big talking point at Jones & Co in the last few weeks, thanks to the moustache growing efforts of several members of staff. Five male colleagues at the law firm in Retford, Bawtry and Ollerton have helped to raise over £500 for one of the region’s specialist cancer care hospices by taking part in Movember, a global campaign that encourages men to grow a moustache for 30 days to raise funds for men’s cancer charities. With Movember now over and sponsorship money going to Bassetlaw Hospice, James Murray, Josh Hawkes, Philip Armstrong, Richard Bannister and Andrew Marsh believe the experience has been more than worthwhile. Richard Bannister: “What started as a joke led to five of us spending November trying to look like Magnum PI. As the honorary solicitors for Bassetlaw Hospice, which among other things provides specialist care for patients diagnosed with cancer and other progressive long term conditions, we wanted any money raised to go there. We are very grateful to all the colleagues, clients, friends and family that chipped in to support a very worthy cause.” Pictured left to right are head of dispute resolution James Murray; Josh Hawkes from the wills, trust and probate team; Philip Armstrong, head of wills, trust and probate; Richard Bannister from the family law team and office manager Andrew Marsh. Mothers' Union Our New Year opens with a meeting on January 13th 2015 at 2pm in St. Luke's Chapel. The title will be a seasonal 'Memories of Christmas Past and Present'. We will be delighted to hear all your memories. I am sure that we are in for an interesting and varied meeting. It is really good to know that we hope to have several new members. All are welcome to attend our meetings on the second Tuesday of the month in St. Luke's chapel in church.

The Tree That Holds Up the Sky - by Paul King Performed by the Phoenix Young Players, 12th - 14th January 2015 This allegorical play takes place in an imaginary community in a forest. The people living in this forest have never had any contact with the outside world and they live a peaceful life with no technology. In the middle of their village is a large tree, a tree which the people believe holds up the sky.

As it is that time of year our subscriptions to Mary Sumner House are due. They have gone up this year to £17.

Their peaceful existence is interrupted by a construction crew building a road through the forest. Unfortunately the tree is in the way. The meeting of these two cultures has a disastrous effect on the stability of the community. Will the tree be felled and if it is what will happen? T

Tickhill’s slimmer’s New Year’s resolution came true January is a time when lots of people decide to get in shape and anyone thinking about slimming down this New Year will find incredible inspiration at Tickhill Slimming World group, members there have lost an incredible 182 stone in the past 12 months, 23 of them have also got to their dream target weight this year. Neil says: “I was really nervous about walking into the group that first time, I figured there would be lots of new people joining the group as it was January and hoped I’d be able to blend into the background. Now I find it funny that I was scared because I got such a warm welcome and I soon realised there was nothing to be worried about because we were all in the same boat – we all just wanted to lose weight. I honestly haven’t looked back since that day. ” He couldn’t believe it when Christine explained how Slimming World’s Food Optimising healthy eating plan worked and he discovered that he could eat lots of everyday foods without weighing and measuring, as well as still enjoying his favourite treats in moderation. Neil adds: “I was really dubious it would work for me at first and in my first week I thought ‘there was no way I’m going to lose weight eating all this’ as I hadn’t felt hungry or like I’d missed out at all, but I’d lost 5lbs and now I’m 3st lighter. It’s not a diet, just a healthy way of eating that I know I can keep up for the rest of my life.” I would recommend Slimming World to anyone who’s thinking about trying to lose weight this New Year, if I can do it anyone can!” Caroline a target member said “I need the support & motivation from group to help me to maintain my target weight, it’s so easy to put the weight back on, attending group really keeps me focused and while I’m 3 pounds either side of my target it’s free for life. I love my Thursday nights, it’s a bit of ‘me’ time, the group are so friendly and supportive of each other, I wouldn’t miss it for the world”. The Slimming World group is held every Thursday at the Parish Room, Tickhill 5:30 & 7:30pm. Christine who runs the Tickhill Slimming World group says that if you make small, manageable changes to the way you cook and eat and get the right support it is possible to make your New Year’s resolutions a reality. It makes me feel sad to think that so many people will embark on unhealthy, restrictive plans this January because I know that they won’t be able to keep them up for longer than a few days or weeks, so they’ll soon be right back where they started and feeling like a failure when actually it’s the programme they’ve chosen that’s failed them.

Tickhill & District WI Members enjoyed the December meeting when Maureen Taylor dressed in a beautiful Tudor costume and spoke about historical Christmas customs. On Wednesday 7th January our speaker will be Jenny Blizard showing us how to keep healthy and fit to keep up with all our New Year resolutions. We meet in the Parish Room at 2pm every first Wednesday and visitors are most welcome.. T

Tickhill . . . but not TODAY At our November meeting Valerie Oxley and a friend gave us a fascinating account of the life of an upper class lady in the 18th century based on the diaries of Amelia Staniforth who lived at Firbeck Hall. One was left amazed at the amount of time that ladies of her class could spend doing very little without apparently becoming bored. This lifestyle must have been in stark contrast to that of her servants and estate workers. The fact that day to day events were recorded by Amelia Staniforth in her journal over many years gave us an excellent insight into the upper class social history of the time in this area. Thank you Valerie.

– discover its past”. However those of you who like these papers (and many do judging by the number you buy) need not worry, we have two papers already lined up for 2015, one to be published in the Spring and one later in the year. Our first meeting in the New Year will be on Thursday 15th January when Amy Downes, Finds Officer of the WYA Advisory Service will talk about Tickhill/ Local Finds. Although Tickhill itself is less than 1000 years old we know that there were Roman and even earlier Anglo Saxon settlements in the area so we look forward to an interesting evening covering a long period in history. As usual the meeting will be in the Methodist Schoolroom in Northgate at 7.30pm (doors open at 7.00pm) and visitors will be welcome. And finally, we wish you all A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We only published one Occasional Paper in 2014 to avoid a clash with publication of our book “TICKHILL 50

Tickhill Parish Room Happy New Year - after all the Christmas Fayres and Christmas Gift Fairs, Nativity Plays, Pantomimes, Christmas meals out and Christmas meals in, we have hissed and boo'd at Cinderella in Tickhill, done similar things at Snow White and Aladdin elsewhere in the area. We had success in December with our Late Shopping Night and the Cashmere sale and the Persian Rug sale. Now it’s the New Year and we welcome 2015 in, hoping for a peaceful and prosperous new year for us all! I think 'peaceful' is probably the operative word at this stage! Tickhill Parish Room jumps into 2015 with our regular classes. Starting after the Christmas break on Monday evenings we have Yoga with Deborah Molwuka, followed by our Ukelele Class with Brett, Sarah and their son Harry. Our Tuesday night Yoga class for the more advanced is back, the first Wednesday in the month is the regular WI meeting at 2 p.m. and Francophiles also meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30 p.m. Every Thursday at 5.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. we have Slimming World, Friday mornings (term time only) is Futterweenies with Rachel and on Saturday between 10 and 12 noon we have our regular Coffee Morning. On Wednesday 7th January we have a brand new class for 1 - 5 year olds. Doodle Monsters, with Helen, starts at 9.30 a.m. with lots of fun and creativity with Splidge and Splodge the Doodle Monsters. Ring Helen on 07521 626805 for details. On 16th January, at 7.30 p.m. we are also hosting our own Quiz Night with Pie and Peas. Ring Lesley on 01302 744600 to book your pie and your place. Thanks to all who contributed towards the late night shopping event. A great start towards Christmas with the lights, reindeer, shops open and singing We were, however, very concerned with the crazy string littering the place and a few of us worked very hard on the Thursday evening to remove it. But to little effect. A pity those who doubtless had lots of fun using it couldn’t have been more considerate as to where it was used. This particular situation will be closely monitored on future occasions All together now ......... 'it's behind you'!! Well, it is now! Cinderella was a huge success. Staged in Tickhill Institute (with thanks to them for their support) this production was excellent. As a group we would like to thank everyone who acted in it, supported it, screen shifted, screen painted, sewed things, pinned things, glued things, sold tickets, bought tickets and generally had ANYTHING to do with it at all! The Scarecrow Festival is being planned for Saturday 2nd May this year. Entry forms are available from KSM Card Shop from early January. For those wishing to be on the programme, entries need to be returned to KSM by the first day of Spring (Friday 20th March this year) please. As entries are potentially viewed by families we respectfully request that due consideration is given to the content and presentation of scarecrows. If you have suggestions (ideas about future events please have a word or come to our next meeting (Wednesday 25th February).

Tickhill Bowling Club Our 2014 AGM was held at the Tickhill Institute on Monday 24th November at 14.00 hrs. It was attended by 18 members including officers and the following is a brief summary of the main items of business that were discussed. The new term at Brownies is looking to be just as busy as last term! At a planning and badge taster night in November it was decided that we would complete the Designer Badge this term. So we will be designing and making lots of different things including, a window box, a gadget for the future, book covers and something to make an elderly person’s life a little bit easier January always brings the annual and much anticipated chip walk. If you happen to see us while we are out please say hello but ask for a chip at your own risk! A minutes silence was held in respect of three members – D Turner, his wife Marion and Brenda Beauchamp - who had passed away during the year The Club had been invited to and agreed to take part in the Christmas Tree Festival in St Mary’s on the 5th 6th and 7th December. Membership at the start of season was 35 and, after a recruitment campaign and despite some losses, membership at the end of the season was 42. In 2015 we will open the green on both Big Lunch and Gala days which will give us a chance to get further recruits Tickhill Lions generously provided four sets of junior bowls and, with the help of Members, we hope to build a youth section this coming season. Financially, we have a healthy balance in both our current and savings accounts. Although we are in a healthy position financially, we must remain prudent and not, for instance, register members who were unwilling to take part in competitions. Team captains Brian Hardy, Lynda Bradbury and Peter Hutchinson thanked all their teams for their efforts in securing second, third and first place respectively in their leagues Tom Plenderleith has resigned as the Captain of the Over 60 League team. Club Day (AKA Fun Day) on 7th June and the Finals Day, which incorporated a buffet and the presentation of trophies were both successful, as were the two friendly matches against Maltby. All officers and committee will continue in their posts for a further year. We will enter the same four league competitions as this year PLUS we will also enter the three DDBA Cup competitions. The preseason meeting would be held in the Institute on Monday 23rd March 2015 at 14.00 hours Provision of more Club shirts and fleeces to be pursued with three possible suppliers now having been identified. Proposed that a coach trip be organised next year where we could not only play bowls but have a social occasion. More information about the Club can be obtained via the Tickhill News page of the Town Council’s web site www.tickhilltowncouncil.co.uk

TICKHILL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY The final speaker meeting of 2014 on Thursday 4th December featured Dr Mike Davey from Ruddington, Nottingham. The title of his presentation was 'Allotment Gardening and Vegetables through the Year'. After going through the history of allotment gardening over about 400 years, a series of photographs of ramshackle allotment sheds provided an amusing interlude before the information about the growing of vegetables including advice on varieties and the important matters of seed propagation, soil condition and feeding. Members were treated to a very interesting and amusing evening with the bonus of Country Market mince pies with their coffee - delicious! When paying Dr Davey his speaker fee it was gratifying to learn that for the last 10 years he has donated his fees to 'Action for Children' the National Children's Home charity. Many thanks to everyone who donated a prize for the raffle.

This month Tickhill Music Society presented a Piano Recital - always popular with audiences. The artist on this occasion was Joseph Houston who had chosen a programme full of interest and variety. First was a piece by Liszt which began in reflective mode but ended with the pianistic fireworks which are typical of this composer’s work. There followed two of the 555 sonatas by Dominico Scarlatti, the first well known and the second less familiar. A Barcarolle is a boating song, often associated with Venetian gondoliers and the example by Chopin which came next had a rippling bass line and a melodious tune. Two pieces by the modern composer Michael Zev Gordon followed, the second a rather jerky and complex tango presenting a stern challenge which the pianist negotiated with ease and flair.

Tickhill Music Society concert review

[Secretary ] T

The first half ended with three lively pieces by Rossini from his ‘Sins of old age’ collection demanding flying fingers and dexterity as well as lyricism. After the interval we heard three of the ‘Images 1’ by Debussy characteristic of Gallic Impressionism, very sensitively played. The towering finale to the concert was Beethoven’s massive ’Appassionata’ Sonata, Op. 57. played with all the commitment and fire that this great piece demands. The pianist Joseph Houston had the technical virtuosity and sympathetic understanding to bring out the best of all the music he played. It made for an most enjoyable and highly satisfying evening of superb music making, much appreciated and enjoyed by the audience.

TRUST WILL

to ensure your children inherit Knowing your children will inherit your assets after you have gone is something that probably gives you great comfort. But the uncomfortable truth is that unless you have the right type of will, nearly everything you think your children will inherit could easily go in care home fees for the surviving partner. Many couples make a ‘Mirror Will’ which leaves everything to the surviving partner and then to their children, not realising that if the surviving partner needs residential care, he or she will have to use all their assets to pay for this until they have £14,250 left. Property Trust Wills are the best way of ensuring that your children inherit everything that you

intended them to. Instead of leaving everything to each other, this type of will enables you and your partner to each leave your personal share of your home to your children in trust, with the condition that the children cannot have their share while the surviving partner is still alive. The surviving partner is still able to sell their share of the home or move house but the share left in trust to the children cannot be included in any means test calculations, which means it cannot be used to pay care home fees. Property Trust Wills are only suitable for couples in good mental health and cannot be used by single people or a surviving partner who now owns the property outright. Jones and Co is probably Bawtry’s best known firm of solicitors, having offered personal and business legal advice to people in the area for more than 200 years.
