NEW Emma Bridgewater Lifestyle products just arrived!

Ironing just got easier... New local ironing service star ng in Tickhill.

Welcome to the July 2015 edition

Well exams are over for my family and I am sure that students up and down the country will be celebrating. Just the results in August to look forward to now! About the time these magazines arrive on my driveway my daughter will have her much anticipated School Prom. A great deal of preparation seems to have gone into this one evening, I do hope it lives up to expectations! I am sure that all of the end of school year activities such as sports days, summer fairs, concerts and transition days will all now be well under way. It is my first year for many years that I haven’t had a child at primary school and I think that without all these activities that remind me that the school year is coming to a close, end of term is going to catch me a little by surprise. Just a reminder that all ‘Today’ Publications are available online within a couple of days of distribution each month. You can access them from the home page of www. todaypublications.co.uk or from our facebook page www. facebook.com/todaymags These online versions can be very useful if you need to find an advertisers details when at work, or out and about and don’t have a copy of the magazine to hand.

If you are interested please ring for details Tel:

07793 955076 or email

ironingjustgoteasier@gmail.com

I look forward to making your life easier.... Anne

Discount Vehicle Hire

The August issue will be delivered to you late July, in fact it may even by early August as I seem to have large numbers of distributors on holiday the last week in July! Apologies if your copy does arrive a few days later than normal. If you would like to have something included in this issue, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th July.

Enjoy July and I will be back in a months’ time with your August magazine.

Best wishes, Paula x

Estfeld School–

Cross Country at Hill House School On Saturday 16th May 2015 Estfeld competed in the annual Doncaster Schools Cross Country Tournament held at Hill House School. In all, fourteen schools competed and 250 children ran the course. It was a sunny morning and the Estfeld squad were in fine spirits. Competing for Estfeld were: U11 Boys – Sebastian Bonnett, Harvey McCabe, Zain Davenport and Thomas Reeve U11 Girls - Callie Coates, Frankie Davidson, Megan Dickinson and Hannah Gratton U9 Boys – Aston Dunstan, John Klesnil, Ryan Horner and Sam Radford U9 Girls – Livvie Anley, Francesca Bonnet, Eva Dickinson and Milly Jones The squad ran very well over what is a long and difficult course and finished in fifth place overall. There were some great team and individual performance and we are very proud of the squad’s achievement. Outstanding team performances from the U11 age group resulted in both the girls and boys squad finishing third in their age-group, whilst Aston Dunstan placed 2nd in the U9s boys race, Zain Davenport placed 7th in the U11 boys race and Callie Coates placed 9th in the U11 girls race.

I would like to say how proud we all are at school of all of the squad for their determination and commitment. I am sure that we will hear more of these athletes in years to come. Congratulations to them all and to their families for their support on the day. Thank you also to Mrs Painter and Mrs Dale for their support in training.

Wadworth School

Maypole time! On Thursday 4th June, Wadworth village turned up in their hundreds to watch children from the school dancing around the maypole. The weather couldn’t have been better and the crowds were wowed by the mixture of traditional and modern dancing and music from every class. Not only that but the Year 4 brass band and the after school ukulele club provided excellent entertainment between the dances. The event was very well attended, and the raffle and stalls raised £835.52 for school fund and the feedback from the spectators has been entirely positive. Mr McLean, the new(ish) headteacher explained that this was his, and many of his staff’s first ever Maypole celebration and was keen to thank those who helped make the day such a success: “I really hope everyone enjoyed the day, and wish to thank everyone who helped in any way to ensure that it went as well as it did, including Abigail and Bailey, the returning May Queen and Herald, the PTA for providing and decorating the tractor and trailer, Sandra and the police for ensuring the procession was safe, all the sponsors, parents and staff for providing the fantastic raffle prizes and for their hard work leading up to and during the day.” He also added: “I am enormously proud of the children, the staff and the whole community for organising and supporting the Maypole Celebration.”

PLANTAR FASCIITIS (fash-ee-itis!) The plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue running from the heel to the base of the toes. It supports the arch of the foot, acts as a shock absorber and helps with forward propulsion during walking. Plantar fasciitis is the name we give to pain in the heel, which may extend along the sole of the foot, that is caused by repetitive stress to the plantar fascia. It is usually felt most keenly on taking the first few steps following rest ie first thing in the morning or after prolonged sitting. It is a common condition affecting 1 in 10 of us at some point in our lives and can be a pretty stubborn problem. It will, however, eventually get better with time and treatment can speed up this recovery process. There are several potential causes of plantar fasciitis – being overweight, pregnancy, being ‘on your feet’ all day and poor footwear may all contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis. Stiffness in the ankle and foot may also cause excessive strain on the plantar fascia as may any changes in your usual work or exercise routine.

When treating plantar fasciitis, it is often a combination of strategies that works best. Medication and rest can ease your symptoms. Physiotherapy to stretch and mobilise the tight tissue and stiff joints can help tackle the cause of the problem. A Physiotherapist can also advise you on the most appropriate exercises and self management techniques to help manage your problem.

St Mary’s School St Marys go to Caythorpe Court On 18th – 22nd May 2015, St Mary’s Primary School pupils from Years 5 and 6 went to PGL, Caythorpe Court. When we arrived we all had to take our heavy bags to our tents. Our guide, Frazer, helped some of us. After our tour we had our first tea and then it was camp fire where we played and sang songs. It was an amazing experience and everyone enjoyed it greatly! One of the highlights

would have to be the vertical challenge. Another favourite activity was definitely the trapeze because it was nerve wracking. You had to climb up a tall wooden pole and haul yourself up onto a shaky platform. The feeling after completing the activities was really exhilarating. The food was delicious and it was always different every day. Giovanni Filippo, Camran Cassar and Sebastian Durdy – Year 6 24

TICKHILL NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN At last! The Borough Council has arranged for the REFERENDUM on our Neighbourhood Plan to be held on Thursday 23rd July. With all the enforced delays it has taken 3 years from start to finish. The law states that, after all the required stages have been gone through, a referendum is called when all voters in the parish have the opportunity to vote 'Yes' or 'No' to the Plan coming into full effect. Clearly everyone involved in the work on the Plan urges our fellow Tickhillians to give a resounding 'YES'. The final version of the Plan will be on the Town Council website as soon as it is ready. Some alterations have been made, as required, after the report of the Independent Examiner. However, if you have seen his report, he proposed the deletion of our policy Town Centre 2, which seeks to preserve the variety in the town centre commented on positively by so many of you. Happily, Doncaster planners (who have this power) have supported us and this important policy remains. For the rest, note that a Plan supported in a referendum gives us teeth when taking up issues with a wide variety of official bodies and local authority departments. It is also perhaps worth repeating some of the specific ways the Plan should help guide our development: 1. Planning applications in Tickhill will be assessed against it 2. Serious concerns about road safety and through traffic will be raised with the appropriate authorities 3. Promoting and conserving our historic environment and tourist potential 4. Protecting the variety of shops and businesses in the town 5. Working toward better flood protection and control 6. Promoting improvement to community facilities 7. Increasing opportunities for recreation and access to the countryside Please make sure that you vote 'YES' on 23rd July. Thank you all for the contributions you have made during the consultations and production of the Neighbourhood Plan.

Minor ailment services Some pharmacies run a minor ailment scheme, which means they can supply medicines for certain conditions on the NHS. • If your pharmacy runs a minor ailment scheme that includes eczema, for example, it means your pharmacist can supply medicines for this condition and you'll only pay the standard prescription charge. • Any decision on whether medication or medical supplies are needed lies with the Pharmacist who makes the assessment. • Patients must register for the scheme with the Pharmacy. However if you're exempt from paying prescription charges – because you're under 16 or over 60, for example, or you have a prescription prepayment certificate (PPC) – you won't pay for the medicine.

Update from the Practice • A recent audit for the NHS across all surgeries revealed a large percentage of GP appointments are avoidable. Of 160 appointments audited from our practice in one day, 38% were deemed avoidable. This means they could have been treated by a Pharmacist, a Nurse, a Health Care Assistant or at home. • A doctor has been appointed to replace Dr Sheehan. He is Dr DeSilva and will start in August. Until then Locum doctors will continue to be used. 28

This could mean getting the correct medication for some of the above conditions free for your children or you if you qualify and you won’t need a doctor’s appointment.

POT LUCK The previously advertised Pot Luck on Friday the 10th July has been replaced by a friendly doubles match against Maltby starting at 6.30 p.m. at Tickhill. We need 16 players for the event – so put your name down on the notice that is displayed on the board at the green. Thereafter, Pot Luck evenings of fun will be on: 24th July, 7th August and 21st August Everyone is welcome and they will commence at 6.00 p.m. COMPETITION NEWS Despite heroic efforts on what each side declared to be the worst green ever - as well as being attacked by hordes of midges - we lost our Hospital Cup match by just 8 points out of a possible 168. During June we hosted visiting teams who were, on four separate days, competing in the Bufton Cup, Brook Farm Handicap and Hospital Cup as well as a South Yorkshire County Rose Bowl competition. Many thanks to Lynda and Audrey and all the other helpers who did a splendid job in keeping competitors and spectators fed and watered at these events. Our Midweek League (Played 6 and lost 3) and our Over 60 Singles (Played 6 and lost 4) teams are finding life a bit more difficult since they were promoted to the higher divisions. Our Over 60 Doubles team has got off to a cracking start by winning six of its seven games and their only defeat was by a mere 2 points. Our Doubles League team has now won two of its four games. NEW MEMBERS We are pleased to welcome Alan and Duncan to the Club who have settle in very quickly and are enjoying the sport. The following are the home matches for July and early August. Spectators are welcome and light refreshments are available.

Tickhill Music Society For the May 2015 concert of the Tickhill Music Society we were entertained by the Jubilee String Quartet, a team of four talented women. The first thing we noted was the seating arrangement. Unusually the cellist sat between the violins and the viola. We then saw that the four ladies wore long, black dresses with a red sash at the waist. But all that is incidental for we were here to enjoy an evening’s stimulating and entertaining music. There was nothing effeminate about these four performers - they had precision, drive and tenderness as the music called for. First came the fairly early Haydn Quartet Op. 33 No.1 most notable for the final ‘Presto’ played at a blistering pace. The Mozart Quartet No. 22 (K589) was written for the King of Prussia and so contained a prominent cello part for His Majesty’s benefit. The Larghetto was limpid and languorous and the Menuetto third movement danced along in a sprightly manner. After the interval we had a searching performance of Mendelssohn’s Quartet op. 13. written when he was only 18. After a vigorous and forceful Allegro Vivace there was a serene Adagio, and an Intermezzo with plenty of drive and attack. The concluding Presto had a rhythmic Pizzicato base line, the whole work being given a superb performance by these musicianly young ladies. And so another excellent season of fine music making provided by Tickhill Music Society came to a triumphant close. Roll on September!

Cuckoo named Dawn Rose The first new Cuckoo boat to be built for over 80 years was officially named at Worksop Water Day. Cllr Sybil Fielding, the Chair of Nottinghamshire County Council, presided over a ceremony that included saying some traditional verses, pouring beer and throwing a mirror into the canal. This was the culmination of over a decade of planning, fund-raising and hard graft by a group of volunteers from the Chesterfield Canal Trust. Cuckoo boats were unique to the Chesterfield Canal. They never had engines, being horse drawn right up to the end of commercial working in the 1950s. They had a mast in order to sail when they ventured onto the River Trent. The last Cuckoo boat known to be in existence rotted away over 20 years ago. It was called Dawn. This gave the inspiration for the name of the new boat. The actual building work started four years ago. It was led by David Bownes who worked on Cuckoo boats as a young man, so he was one of the very few people alive - possibly the only one - with real working knowledge of their construction. The volunteers decided to do it the traditional way, so they used only hand tools. No power tools were used at any stage. Even the dead straight 25’ mast was carved out by hand. As the culmination of the naming ceremony, bunting was hoisted up the mast topped by a pennant bearing its name. T

Tickhill Methodist Ladies' Fellowship First this month we would like to thank everyone who supported our Charity Afternoon for the RNLI when we made £230 which will be presented to a speaker from the RNLI at a meeting in November. As we also sent a cheque for £250 to the Nepal Earthquake appeal last month we are quite proud of our small group!

Roccos supports Wellbeing of Women Roccos Italian Kitchen, Tickhill hosted a Charity Lunch in aid of Wellbeing of Women on June 3rd 2015. This was first collaborative event for the Doncaster branch of Wellbeing of Women with Rocco’s Italian Kitchen, Tickhill. It was a great success with the stars of the show Chefs Chris and Oliver who demonstrated Capasante San Christofero (Scallops with Black Pudding). This is one of Chris’s signature dishes and we enjoyed his skills and talents. The demonstration included audience participation with lots of interesting questions being asked. Lunch was absolutely delicious & enjoyed by all & with a well supported raffle and donations for the Recipe books we raised a grand total of £611.95. We are overwhelmed by the support and generosity of the guests at this event and we look forward to hosting many more events in the future. Wellbeing of Women is a charity dedicated to improving the health of women and babies. Since 1964 Wellbeing of Women has funded groundbreaking medical research into a wide range of health issues that have an effect on all women at all stages of their life. 3 reasons why yoga can help with your lower back pain and sciatica. Many of my students have back problems. Almost everyone suffers from back pain at one time or another but as we get older, back pain, particularly lower back pain, and related conditions such as sciatica, can cause us real problems in terms of mobility. It’s not just the lack of mobility - it’s the sometimes excruciating pain and frustration we feel when we can’t do simple things like put on our shoes or get in and out of the car. Most of us know gentle exercise is better than rest, which physicians now know simply causes us to seize up even further. So your GP is likely to prescribe gentle exercise and pain killers, so you can allow the body to move without wincing too much. Your doctor may also suggest a couple of sessions with a physiotherapist to help get you started and learn which movements are helpful and which to avoid. However, easing the pain so you can move more easily isn’t just what this is all about. Strengthening the core muscles which support the spine is important if you want to help protect your spine from further injury or other problems in the future. 3 reasons why yoga can help: 1. Yoga helps improve the underlying causes of the back pain. Unless your condition is the result of a fall or other trauma, it is highly likely that poor posture, muscle tightness and/or muscle weakness will have made you more susceptible to back problems. There are some simple yoga exercises, which, if you did them even for just a few minutes a day, would build strength and more flexibility in your lower back area, so you would be less susceptible in future.

2. Yoga movements improve the circulation in the spine Moving the spine gently through systematic stretching, bending and twisting, helps compress the spine disks, bringing them the fresh oxygen and other nutrients they need to remain healthy and pain free. 3. Yoga helps raise your awareness and improve your posture We’ve already said poor posture can be an underlying cause of back problems. From watching TV slumped on the sofa to how we wash the dishes - this repeated poor alignment of the spine eventually weakens and puts pressure on the lower back area in particular, making us more likely to develop problems later on. Yoga encourages you to do the exercises mindfully, and become more aware of your posture so you find you start to change those bad habits and spend more time holding your spine in a way which will help strengthen and support you, rather than weaken you.

All for as little as 20 minutes a day. Isn’t it worth it?

community Hi everyone, I am writing this page whilst on holiday in Greece. The village I am staying also has its cat and dog problems. I am also involved with the groups of volunteers here that encounter the very same problems and are no different from any other town and village throughout Europe . What is important is that that there are people trying to make a difference even in small communities. Now, getting back to our Sanctuary, we were all so excited when we received a call from the Paul O’Grady show. We were asked if we would like to take a cute puppy down to the live show to promote our Sanctuary. Paul found our puppy so adorable that he decided to do the first part of the show with the puppy sat on his desk. So Amie and Louise who had taken the puppy to the studio didn’t get a look in! This was such a privilege for us and we received the most amazing publicity. We have now been open as a Sanctuary for 12 years and how things have changed. Through hard work and devotion our Sanctuary has been transformed from old garages, a cold running tap and a portal loo into the prince of facilities, with hot and cold water brick kennels, with under floor heating and a reception that we are all so proud of thanks to many donations and bequests. These projects would not have been possible without hard working volunteers using their building and decorating skills to help us create a safe and secure environment for our residents.

Finding a forever home

anyone that would like to volunteer, even for a few hours a week. We are really desperate for volunteers to man the shop. This would be in the Worksop area so please if you can spare a few hours call us . We have a vacancy for an experienced kennel assistant, however you must be willing to work rota weekends. Please call 01302 711330 and leave a message or bring you CV to the Sanctuary We need volunteers to stand outside Pets At Home or join our street collection in Doncaster on the 11th July. Our dog show is on the Recreation field up Tithes Lane, Tickhill on the 12 th July and we also need more volunteers to help on the day.

Junior has come into our care because his previous owner has had to move into rented accommodation and Junior wasn’t allowed to go. Its was a sad day when they had to part. Junior has had quite a stressful time lately. Previously a housecat, things are a little strange here and it has taken him a while to adjust. He is starting to gain his confidence now so his true personality will come shining through. Still prone to hissing when he feels threatened, he needs his new owners to be patient and give him time to become accustomed to his new surroundings at his own pace. The wait is worth it.

Thank you to everyone that has left dog food and blankets in my garage I am surprised every day by people’s generosity. We are still desperately in need of donations. If you would like to set up a direct debit of just £2 a month this would make such a difference and help enormously.

Whilst the weather is getting warmer the dogs are enjoying their early morning walks with our dog walker volunteers who do a great job. We try to make sure our dogs have at least 2 walks a day to keep them happy.

If you are considering looking for a cat or dog please come to see us we will be happy to have a chat and discuss which dog or cat would fit your life style .

If you are interested in dog walking please give us a call, we would need you to come on a Tuesday afternoon so we can carry out a health and safety talk then you could come along and walk to help keep our dogs happy.

Bye for now

We haven’t as yet made a decision on a shop and would still like to hear from

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Water without the guilt...

Plants for Dry Spaces Alliums - the huge ones look great Cistus - Rock Rose Euphorbia - my favourite, very architectural Helianthemum - Sun Rose Lavender - plant near patios for the fragrance Santolina Sedum - almost indestructible! Senecio - the sunshine plant Thyme

But nowadays hosepipes are the horticultural equivalent of a bad taste joke: out of style and somewhat frowned upon.

However, if you want to make the most of your saved water then irrigation systems are the best choice. They typically reduce the amount of water you use by 70-90%, which is a huge saving. Here are a few tips for getting the best from an irrigation system.

But gardens need water to survive so what can we do? Well the truth is, we have more than enough water in the UK to sustain an average garden, but it tends to fall in the winter when all the plants are dormant.

Ground preparation is really important. Dig in lots of home-produced compost, well rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost. This organic matter will help the soil retain any moisture it receives.

A water butt is a simple, economical solution for most urban gardens. Butts will catch the rainwater from your gutter and store it until it’s required. They typically hold between 100 and 300 litres depending on size.

Make sure the irrigation lines run under the tips of the branches rather than at the base of the plant. This will water the roots more efficiently.

Who remembers their dad hosing the garden on warm summer evenings? We always seemed to have a lush lawn when I was a child, apart from the summer of 1976 when hosepipes were banned and we all used stand-pipes for weeks.

You can now buy huge rainwater tanks which hold up 1000 litres and are great if you have the space. There are also underground storage tanks which hold over 2500 litres! With special attachments, stored rainwater can be fed into hoses and sprinklers, so you can use them guilt-free. 48

Make sure you mulch. Mulch can be a membrane, gravel, bark chips or cocoa shells. The aim is to keep moisture in the soil. I favour organic mulches because they gradually rot down and can be dug in to improve the soil texture further. A few simple measures will ensure that your garden stays green this summer without costing the earth!

Enjoy your garden. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Happy Hands

The month of June unfortunately brought us some sad news. Linda Cooper sadly lost her battle with Leukaemia. Linda was a much loved, long standing member of our Tuesday Morning DanceFit light class in Tickhill. Her smiling face is very much missed by the Team and class members. We will never forget her. Our thoughts and prayers are with Phillip and her family. God Bless Linda. We would like to say a huge thank you to all our wonderful and loyal customers who came along to the Tickhill Big Lunch, despite the weather and performed a fantastic display of what we do in our classes. The ladies (and gent) who performed for you that day were from our DanceFit Light Class.

The picture shows a “thank you” card made by the pupils of Heatherwood School. This was their thank you for the contribution made to the school by the Doncaster Soroptimist group. Receiving it was almost like getting “packaged sunshine”! The Soroptimists raised funds from a variety of activities and voted to contribute some of the funds raised to the Heatherwood School, the school plans to use the contribution to buy specialist equipment when sufficient funds become available. The school plans to invite the Soroptimists to visit the school when the equipment has been bought so that they can meet the children and staff. Putting faces to names! If you are “a woman who wants to make a difference” and enjoy the company of likeminded women, contact our Membership Officer, Carol Burton, on 01302 368822 for information on how to join. You can be sure of a warm welcome! T

Open Garden on Saturday the 8th August 2015 Location: 132 Doncaster Road, Tickhill Time: 12noon – 6pm Tickets: £3.50 each including refreshments Parking: at Eastfield Farm opposite.

Introducing... the tree bumblebee Bombus Hypnorum this little chap with a white furry bottom is particularly active now, and a small number of them are probably doing figures of eight by your garage roof, or outside a nesting box on your apple trees.... I've had 3 calls about them this week and I am not even on the Councils’ list of bee-keepers to call! ...if you have them, don't worry. They are not interested in you, these are the drones on the lookout for a queen... they are relatively benign and if you try and move them you will kill them. Come the end of July the whole colony except the queens die off. The queens hibernate until March. Honey bees are the only bees to go through the winter as a colony. Have a look at British beekeepers website to help identify bees. http://www.bbka.org.uk/help/do_you_ have_a_swarm.php If you ring the council with a problem about bees they will give you the phone number of one of the members of Doncaster Beekeepers association. They get a lot of calls, and if it is a genuine swarm of honey bees will be happy to help as long as they aren’t somewhere inaccessible like a chimney or at the top of an enormous tree. The council (because of the cuts) have no one to deal with bees now. So please take some time and properly identify your bees before making that phone call. Bumble bees are a protected species. Enjoy them. T 62

We meet at 10.00am for coffee followed by a speaker after which many of us can be found downstairs in the bar; lunch is also available for those who wish. At our May meeting our previously advertised Speaker was unwell so Lloyd Powell came to the rescue with his talk on medieval Bawtry. As usual he kept the audience fascinated, as he told how boats came up river as far as St Nicolas Church, and carried goods from Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire to Hull, where they were exported to Europe, particularly Germany. Bawtry’s Georgian frontages hide the original medieval buildings, proving householders wanted to modernise then, as they do today. Thank you Lloyd for an excellent talk given at short notice. May marks the end of our normal monthly meetings until September but in between holidays there is still much going on. There was a trip to Hodsock Priory in June (full report next month) and on Thursday 2nd July there is a trip to Hull to visit the various museums

there. At the time of writing there are still one or two places left on the coach which leaves the Methodist Church at 10.00am. If when you read this you want to go ring Dorothy Bradley on 752429 – you may be lucky enough to get a seat. Your scribe who is not a user of social media websites understands from others that there has been much excitement recently about a network of ancient tunnels under Tickhill. The very low level of the land particularly to the South and East of the town would seem to make this unlikely and five years of research for our book “Tickhill – discover its past” by Carol Hill did not reveal any evidence of tunnelling under the town. However if anyone can provide good evidence to the contrary we would be delighted to know about it.

Methodist Minister Dear Friends, Everyone has been wounded in the past. It is therefore no surprise to us that most of us would want to have a time of healing in our lives. Healing takes a lot of patience and a lot of time – days, weeks, months and sometimes years. Spiritual healing is similar to healing from a deep wound. It starts from the inside and ends on the outside. Thus, it may be difficult to see the steady healing process in our lives. We only need to believe that the mending process is taking place. Most of us forget to thank God when we are mended. Psalms 103: 1 - 5 below suggest that we praise God for healing us: “Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits - who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s” (New International Version).

o Identify and work with your emotions o Have compassion with yourself and others o Let go of your resistances o Trust and yield to God o Receive support from others o Extend and receive forgiveness o Take good care of your body and spirit I wonder if you can take sometime and work through the list above. It will do your body and spirit some good and bring healing. Here is a suggested prayer you would want to say after you have worked through: ‘God of healing, help me to mend the broken places in my life. Direct my mind and heart to sources of hope and healing. Let me not forget all that remains for me as I ponder what has gone from my life. Be my vision and my strength. Anoint me with the oil of your love and take my hand as I move forward into ever greater healing”. – Joyce Rupp Have a blessed month.

Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam

How often do you say thanks for having your body and spirit mended? It’s time to start. However, as you wait for healing in your life, there is also the need to play your part. Joyce Rupp, in her book, “The cup of our life. A guide to spiritual growth’, suggests that in order to be mended sometimes, you need to:

Tickhill Town Council - JULY 2015

The Diversionary activities will be run on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons during the summer holidays. The council is still trying to source funding from external bodies but they are hopeful for support from the Duke of Edinburgh students from Sir Thomas Wharton Community College for the running of the events. Doncaster Rovers have also been approached and the request for support has been fully backed by both Tickhill Town Council and Doncaster Council. Tickhill Town Council is not prepared to let these valuable activities fall by the way side and will be there the cups of teas and drinks for the children participating in the activities. Tickhill Town Council hopes to see many of you at these activities and hope that we can grow from strength to strength.

Tickhill Horticultural Society Members wanting to learn how to grow show daffodils at our May meeting were disappointed because our speaker John Freer, just out of hospital and not allowed to drive was unable to make it. We were very lucky at short notice to get a speaker, but top of Eric Brough’s emergency list is fruit expert Clifford Cain who lives locally and is a good friend of the society. Clifford was happy to come and give a presentation on ‘Pests and Diseases in Fruit Trees’ and to answer any fruit related questions, but we did not have time to let the members know and only 52 of us enjoyed the meeting. A very interesting subject well put over. Thank you Clifford. On Friday 22nd May our Chairman Ray Hill and his wife Gillian had a plant sale with refreshments in their garden; three, two hour sessions attracted excellent support and the full proceeds a super £940 was donated to the Methodist church and charity which is currently providing help to relive problems caused by the tragedy in Nepal. Well done Gillian and Ray.

19th September Concert … “so it will have the feel of Cup final Day at Wembley then,” was a comment made when talking about the programme for this concert to celebrate the Queens long reign. It could well have that celebratory feel with songs like ‘I’d like to teach the world to sing’ and ‘Congratulations’ – music of the different decades since the coronation. And there is still a chance for you to influence the choice, with suggestions to John the organist (744142) by the middle of July please. We are hoping for a community choir to come together to prepare for the occasion, you are most warmly invited to come along to the practices in the church on Fridays at 7pm (for an hour) during August. Please do come along and join in. T

On Saturday 4th July we will be having a plant stall at the Scout & Guide Gala. If anyone, members or not has any excess plants to donate to us they would of course be very gratefully accepted. Ring Ray Hill on 743317 or Phil Thomas on 744946 to arrange collection. Bearing in mind the pleasure given to so many by the lovely displays of plants in so many parts of Tickhill the Society’s committee have decided to follow up last year’s donation to Tickhill in bloom to celebrate our 30th Anniversary, with another donation of £100. It is good to know that one of our local businesses, Stewart Piper Car Sales has already contributed £100 towards the display at the Buttercross. Our July speaker on Thursday 30th will be Hillary Hudson from Sheffield talking about climbing Plants in the Methodist Schoolroom, starting at 7.15pm. Visitors welcome (£3) T
