Welcome to the

July 2019 edition

Today

“What is lovely never dies, but passes into another loveliness, star-dust or sea-foam, flower or winged air.” Thomas Bailey Aldrich July already and the summer months might finally be upon us. Another school year is coming to an end and another set up young people are heading towards leaving behind a nursery, school or college. Hopefully although sad about leaving they will be looking forward to the challenges ahead as they enter the next phase of their education or move into the workplace. Just like in June you can find a summer fair, gala or other outdoor event to go to most weekends through July. You will find details of many such events throughout this magazine. Following the success of our previous giveaways, this month we have a pair of tickets for James performing after racing at Doncaster Racecourse this summer. Look out for the Giveaway details in the magazine for your chance to enter. The August issue will be delivered to you late July. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th July. Don’t forget to let me have details in good time if you have an event to publicise this summer. Enjoy July and I will be back in a months’ time with your August magazine.

Best wishes,

DONCASTER RAMBLER’S A local walk to Blaxton and back T

It continues to amaze me how many little gem footpaths there are around Doncaster. When I read “a leisurely walk to Blaxton and back to Finningley” I thought, “is it worth it, we’ve walked this area a thousand times?” But you know what, Hilda our walk leader, pulled it out of the bag, and took us places new and unexplored. Starting at the village green Hilda took us a short circuit round Finningly past the church and playing fields, over the railway and north to the eastern edge of Blaxton. We then continued north to High Common wood, then turning right and right again heading south to the west of Blaxton and back to Finningley where we made a final wider circuit of the village back to the green. Yet this walk wasn’t just about the direction, or even the changing landscape, it was about the atmosphere, standing in the village green surrounded by ducks, or lost in a wood with bird song. Or diving through a tunnel of gorse as your mates disappear, then dancing around the edge of a puddle hoping not to fall in. This walk took us from field edge to forest and back to field edge, winding through the environs of Blaxton and Finningley, in some cases no more than 100 meters from houses, yet could be in the middle of nowhere! Places where memories of childhood adventures come back to life. That’s what a walk like this is all about. Brilliant Hilda thank you. Missed this one? There are plenty more Thursday walks to enjoy, visit our website for details We also have walks every Saturday and Tuesday, some local and some further afield, so there is sure to be something to suit you.

MALTBY MINERS’ T welfare band on winning form!

At the recent Yorkshire brass band championships, the Maltby Miners’ Welfare Band became Yorkshire champions (4thsection) while also picking up the prize for best soloist, best percussion section and best conductor. They also received an invitation to represent Yorkshire at the national finals at Cheltenham in September. This meant that an already busy concert season just got busier. The band goes back a long way having been formed in 1911 a year after the pit was opened and lead the parade at the closure of the pit in 2013. 2018 saw the closure of the miner’s welfare with the band playing its last concert there in December. The band, however, continues to go from strength to strength with around 30 engagements on the books, a new Christmas C.D. recorded one hot October weekend last year and a 4-day tour of Belgium in August. The tour includes concerts in Bruges and Ghent and also performing at the Last post ceremony at the Menin Gate. Different concert venues are nothing new to the band which have performed at a variety of places such as village halls, churches, minsters and cathedrals, stately homes, castles, hotels, football and rugby matches and even once at Aintree during the Grand National Weekend and if you go back far enough the Crystal Palace! The three concerts at the Rotherham civic each year seem to be very popular. The Maltby Miners’ Welfare band is keen to keep music live and while it is always looking for players old and new to join the band it also has a training band to encourage people of all ages to learn to play a brass instrument. The Maltby Miners’ Welfare training band has rehearsals on Saturday mornings between 9:30 to 11:00am where instruments and tuition are provided. You can find the band at the Maltby Miners’ Welfare Sports Pavilion, Muglet Lane, Maltby If you would like more information on how to contact or join the band, future concerts or details about rehearsals try our web site at www.maltbyband.org.uk or contact us; email; maltbyband@gmail.com

DONCASTER

CANCER DETECTION TRUST T Hopefully the sun will be shining by the time you read this after a wet start to June! We haven’t a final figure yet for the Midsummer Walk donations as Christine from Thorne Rural Lions has been on holiday. Will report back as soon as possible. In the meantime our sincere thanks to everyone who took part (and their sponsors) – we had almost 200 walkers and thankfully it was a dry day. Our grateful thanks also to Lions International, particularly Thorne Rural Lions, for all their hard work. A reminder that we have a stall at Bentley Gala on Sunday, 14th July where we will be selling jewellery and other goodies. The Gala will be in Bentley Park from 1-5pm with lots to do and see for all the family. Come along and join in the fun. Also Optima International on Askern Road at Toll Bar will be holding their annual Open Day on Friday, 26th July from 12-5pm. Entry is £5 on the day, but £4 if bought from the company beforehand. All rides are free and unlimited. A bar and refreshments are available. This is another popular event and money raised goes to charities (including DCDT). A reminder that we will also have a stall at Auckley Show on Saturday, 17th August. Details will be in next publication. Let’s hope the sun shines for all these events as there is a lot of hard work behind the scenes in organising them. Please let us know if you have any unwanted scarves or jewellery or any tombola/raffle prizes. If you are planning a fundraising event on our behalf we can supply you with T-shirts, sponsor forms, etc. We are at 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far to our Prostate Cancer appeal and to the many groups and organisations who support us.

DONCASTER HF RAMBLING CLUB T

Doncaster HF Rambling Club is an independent, non-profit-making walking club founded in 1948 which strives to provide opportunities for the healthy enjoyment of the countryside, in a spirit of friendship and fun. With many members from Doncaster and beyond, we organise walks to take place every two weeks on alternate Sundays, visiting a wide range of locations in the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire Moors and coast, the Yorkshire Wolds, Lincolnshire Wolds, the South Pennines, and Staffordshire. Our web-site www. doncasterhframblingclub.org.uk gives a pictorial record of our walks which can be accessed from the drop-down menu under ‘Recent Walks’ and ‘Where We Go’. At each location we offer a choice of three guided walks of varying degrees of distance and difficulty, an example of which can be found in the menu under ‘Next Walk’. We also organise residential visits to more distant areas such as the Lake District, South Derbyshire and Northumberland. We provide transport to all our walk locations by private coach, with members boarding and being dropped off at a number of points in and around Doncaster, listed in the dropdown menu under ‘Booking Walks’. We welcome prospective new members by encouraging them to participate in a couple of walks before asking them to pay our annual membership subscription. However we do ask that they pay the coach fare which is currently set at £10 for the entire journey. To make further enquiries please first contact our Membership Secretary, Maureen Dransfield, on 01-977-704747, e-mail: mdransfield49@gmail. com and then to book a place on a walk telephone our Rambling Secretary, Gavin Barnes on 01-302539316.

INDEPENDENT MONITORING BOARD T

AT HMP LINDHOLME SEEKS VOLUNTEERS

HMP Lindholme is close to Hatfield Woodhouse and Doncaster, a Category C training prison, with around 1,000 prisoners. We perform vital roles for Ministers and the public providing an unbiased oversight of the prison. Members are unpaid but do claim costs for travel and financial loss. Duties include; monitoring fairness and humanity, the range and adequacy of programmes, taking prisoner applications, raising concerns with the Governor and reporting annually to the Minister.

Applicants must be over 18 with a very mature outlook on life and live within 30 miles of the prison. We welcome all who are interested and strive to achieve a balanced Board. Applicants must possess the interest and time, about 5 days a month, to make a full contribution, which can include callouts to the prison (at any time) for incidents, so full training is given. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY T Most gardeners have an idea of what propagation is about – sowing seeds and taking cuttings being the most popular. The visit of

David Newman from the Sage Gardener near Lincoln in late May should, therefore, have meant there was little to learn – but his explanation of various techniques meant that even though we know WHAT we do, he was able to enlighten us as to WHY we do them. The Sage Gardener is a most worthwhile project set up by David and his wife upon his retirement – but things have progressed in the years since, and it sounded like it certainly wasn’t ‘retirement’!

This is an opportunity to 'Drop In' and speak to your Local PCSO Tel: 01302 742871 or email tickhillcommunitylibrary1@gmail.com

Their site is deep in the Lincolnshire countryside and has woodland, meadow and garden areas. It has been set up to provide an environment for the benefit of its visitors, mainly those suffering from dementia, as well as their carers, those recently left on their own following bereavement, and for others needing to improve their wellbeing. To give some the activity is important, as is the way of meeting and talking to people in a similar position to themselves. There are just one or two places left on the coach for the trip to RHS Harlow Carr on Sunday, 7th July, which comes just a day after the Tickhill Gala, at which we have a plant stall. Please come and visit us and see what gaps in your flower borders you can fill!

YORKSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE Raising funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, a team of us are walking 32-miles across the Peak District on 13th July. The YAA are totally funded by charitable donations. Please consider sponsoring our efforts. It costs in the region of £10-15K per day to keep the helicopters functional and available. Plans are well advanced for the Horticultural Show on Saturday, 7th September, and schedules for entries will be available soon. It’s only 30p per exhibit to enter, so why not have a go, whether you fancy your chances at growing vegetables, flowers or fruit. And for those who are horticulturally-challenged, there are baking, preserves, handicraft and photography classes, as well a special section for the children to enter. You don’t have to be an expert at anything (or everything) – after all, they always say it’s the taking part that is the most important thing! It’s great to see that we are still getting a few new members as the year progresses, so why not come along to our next meeting on Thursday, 25th July, when Barbara Hickman will be telling us all about Helmsley Walled Garden.

LIFESTYLE

Holiday Time It’s that time of year again when boutique window displays are tempting us with beautiful swimwear … the realisation hits that summer holidays are almost here and we’re going to have to wear a swimsuit again! Yes, all the parts that we have managed to ignore all year by hiding under clothes will now be exposed for all to see. Generally, if you have a tummy that you prefer to keep hidden then a swimsuit is going to make you feel more confident. Look out for designs with a concealed panel that helps sculpt the body and hold everything in. Also the Tankini is a great in-betweener for the days when you want a bit more cover from your bikini, or alternatively want a bit of a change from your one-piece. There are a variety of combinations: plain, patterned, cropped, and under wired; with bottoms that are low-slung, sidetied, shorts…. Plain or patterned is down to taste but remember if you have a straight body, the geometric patterns will flatter you more than the more rounded, floral patterns, which will compete with your lines. Those are far more suited to curvier figures.

24

When it comes to colour, the same rules apply. Look for colours and shades that flatter your skin tone rather than contrast with it and it will knock pounds off. String tied bottoms are good for drawing the eye away from challenging areas and have the added benefit that you don’t tend to get tan marks. Be warned though, itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny bikini bottoms are designed for itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny bottoms. Those with a larger posterior will feel less exposed in a fuller style brief, or the short styles. Steer clear of patterns on any part of your body that you do not want attention drawn to, e.g. eyecatching designs on the cups of a bikini or tankini draw the eye directly to the bust. Finally, the classic string bikini. If you have an athletic or neat hourglass figure then go for it! Have fun with colour and patterns. It may be raining in Britain when you buy it but look forward to blue skies, warm sunshine and sipping that cocktail … Don’t forget that your beachwear pretty much takes the place of your underwear whilst you are

on holiday. If you usually need to wear a bra with a lot of support then your bikini needs to do the same. Many swimwear ranges are now available in a variety of cup sizes. Why it has taken so long to do something so obvious goodness only knows! Be a real beach babe: wear a hat to protect your hair and face in the midday sun. Simply pack your hat inside a suitcase by filling the crown with small items, such as underwear; place hat the right way up in the centre on the bottom of an empty suitcase; pack in remaining items around the hat to securely hold its shape.

COMMUNITY Hi I have just been in touch with John who has arranged for me to email over to you details for an advert to be produced for the January edition of the Retford Life. I have attached our new logo and old leaflet. Please could you change

OSTEOPOROSIS

Reduced bone density is a normal part of the ageing process but in some people, this happens faster than normal. This is known as osteopenia in the early stages and osteoporosis as the bone loss becomes more significant. Reduced bone density increases the risk of fractures and this is commonly the point of diagnosis as up until then, the painless process of bone loss usually remains undetected. As early diagnosis is so difficult, it is really important to know who is most at risk and what action can be taken to reduce the risk of osteoporosis developing. Risk factors include… • Being female • Long term use of high dose steroid tablets • Family history • Low BMI • Heavy drinking and smoking • Other medical conditions including inflammatory conditions, hormone related conditions and malabsorption problems.

The risk of developing osteoporosis can be reduced by… • Maintaining a healthy weight • Stopping smoking • Consuming sensible amounts of alcohol • Eating foods rich in calcium and vitamin D • Taking a vitamin D supplement • Exercising Adults should be exercising for at least 2.5 hours per week with an additional 2 or more strengthening sessions. Weight bearing exercises and resistance exercises are most beneficial for bone density. Weight bearing exercises include anything performed on your feet and include walking, running, aerobics, dancing and racket sports (swimming and cycling do not count). Resistance exercises are any movements using weights or strong stretchy resistance bands and are particularly important for improving bone density in the arms.

PRINCE CHARMING T

Prince is one of the long stay rescue dogs at the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre. He is a handsome boy, full of

energy and life when outside, who loves running around the paddock with his favourite toy - he is also partial to a good snooze in his kennel. Prince has been at the Centre for many months and his successful re-homing into a loving home is a priority. Caring for animals like Prince, who are in the Animal Centre through no fault of their own requires considerable funding. With rehabilitation high on the list of priorities for the Branch, time and resources are central to achieving our aim and these need funding. One way RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch achieves this is through events that offer supporters a chance to enjoy quality time with friends and family and raise funds to support vital welfare work with animals such as Prince. 2019 has already seen some fantastic events: the Easter Egg Puzzle Hunt was hugely successful and drew in over twice the number of people than it did last year; Big Walkies around the beautiful Thrybergh was a great event, giving folk time to share their love of dogs and dog walking and the Pea ‘n’ Pie Supper and Pub Quiz was a sell-out success, which raised vital funds, and as always our annual Fun Dog Show was a huge success. All of the money raised is used to support the animal welfare work at the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre and so far this year over 330 dogs, cats, rabbits and small animals have been successfully rehabilitated and re-homed With even more exciting events coming soon, such as the Zip Line Challenge and Glitter Disco we will be able to support even more animals like Prince, who depend on us for that second chance. So please come and join us at our events. If you would like to meet Prince (or any of our animals), contact the Animal Centre – 01302 719790 or visit rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk

CHESTERFIELD CANAL WALKING FESTIVAL

T

Taking in three counties and 46 miles of tow paths over nine days, the Chesterfield Canal Walking Festival is billed as the biggest canal walking event in the country. Organised by the Chesterfield Canal Trust, the festival will run from Saturday 14th to Sunday 22nd September with a total of 53 guided walks - the majority of which are free - ranging from a children’s walk of just two miles to the full 46-mile length of the canal in three days. The Trust’s Walks Officer, David Blackburn, who has been researching and leading walks for over 20 years, said: “The canal is an absolute delight at any time of year, but early Autumn possibly sees it at its best. There are walks for all ages and abilities, including specialist interest walks and combined walks and boat trips for people who would like a more relaxing day out. “We are very grateful to everyone who has helped us to put this festival together and to our sponsors Bassetlaw District Council and the Canal & River Trust.” There are special interest walks, e.g. Nature, History, Architecture, Restoration, Bird spotting, Bat spotting and Geocaching. Some walks will explore the attractive towns and villages in North Nottinghamshire. There are opportunities to combine a walk from two miles up to seven miles, with a cruise on one of the Trust’s trip boats. Several walks will investigate the section of the Chesterfield Canal that has not yet been restored and will reveal plans on how this will take place. Full details for all the walks, including booking information can be found at www.chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk. Bookings can also be made by calling 01246 345777.

TICKHILL & DISTRICT MALE VOICE CHOIR T

SUMMER ACTIVITIES

2019

T

Tickhill Town Council in association with D.M.B.C. are pleased to announce that the summer children’s activities will be going ahead, as before, this year.

We are always eager to welcome new members, of which we have welcomed a few recently and the choir invites men of any age to come and join us - so do come along and The location will be at the Pavilion and they will enjoy the camaraderie of singing in a four be run from 1.00pm -3.00pm on Tuesdays and part choir (Bass, Baritone & two Tenor parts). Thursdays. It has been proven that singing regularly can improve one’s health and wellbeing. All prospective new members are most welcome to attend our rehearsals which are held each Monday evening in the Schoolroom to the rear of the Methodist Church, Northgate, Tickhill from 7.30 to 9.30 pm. Remember, it is not necessary to have the ability to read music or to have any previous experience. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact our secretary, Phillip Randall – telephone 01302 743468 or our chairman, Martin Lord – telephone 07588 887771 or just come along to one of our weekly rehearsals. We look forward to seeing you there!!

Our Annual Concert, entitled “It’s Showtime” took place on Saturday 1st June at Tickhill Methodist Church, commencing at 7.30 pm, when we also welcomed Keith Senior as a guest solo artiste. The concert was extremely well attended and we received excellent feedback on the content and the production. The choir sang items from the shows and there was some audience participation, which seemed to go down well. Thanks were given by the chairman to the audience, the choir for all their hard work in rehearsals, our compere, Allen Mason and the “Friends” of the choir for all their background work. In addition our accompanists, Geoff Cox, Janet Skinner and Stephen Bilton along with our Director of Music, Gwyn Platts were all presented with a small token of thanks. The concert was followed by a time of refreshments provided by the “Friends” of the choir. The choir now continues with rehearsals in preparation for the rest of our summer programme. The Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir is available to perform concerts for any occasion – please contact Martin on 07588 887771, all enquiries and bookings would be welcomed.

Fortunately, a grant has been received from “Spar” who will be providing, for those that need it, a light lunch, which will be served from 12.30pm. It will be in the form of a sandwich and drink. Other light refreshment will be available throughout the activities, i.e. squash and/or biscuits and fruit. These activities are put on for the benefit of families and we desperately need volunteers to help supervise and make the copious amounts of squash for the children and cups of tea/coffee for the adults. Please note the activities cannot go ahead if the conditions are inclement and could be cancelled at the last minute. It is hoped, Richard Marshall will be made available to us by D.M.B.C., to help provide football and cricketing activities. If anyone from Tickhill Juniors football is available to do a bit of coaching/overseeing this would release Richard to do his cricket coaching, for which he is qualified. Please do not hesitate to come forward. I am hopeful that we will be able to provide rounders too. The normal consent forms will be required to be completed before any child joins in, all children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult. These forms will be available at each session. A register of those attending will be kept, and all information gathered will be destroyed when the events come to a close at the end of August. The consent form to be completed will also be made available on the website www.tickhilltowncouncil. co.uk Nigel Cannings has offered to do community litter picks for families during the summer, please contact him through the advertised way found under the Council information at the rear of this publication. Funding has already been received from Tesco bags of help to purchase community equipment, please come forward as families as this activity cannot go ahead unsupervised but all equipment will be provided.

The annual exhibition of work by this busy and successful art group which is set up to benefit local artists by meeting, working and exhibiting together through practical sessions, demonstrations, discussions and talks. The WSA provides opportunities for amateur and professionals to meet, create and exhibit together. Further information is available through their Facebook page @ worksopsocietyofartists Bassetlaw Museum, Retford until 10 August ‘FATHER AND SON’ BY KIP AND RICHARD COMBES. Kip Combes (1924-2013) was a prominent figure on the local art scene and a president of the Worksop Society of Artists, while his son Richard is a highly respected New York-based artist who has exhibited internationally and has work in major private collections worldwide. During the early stages of World War II, Kip Combes was evacuated to Retford with his family and, apart from a period of living in Manchester, he remained in the town for the rest of his life. Richard was brought up in Retford and worked as an architect in the UK before moving to New York City. There he earned Master’s degree in painting at the New York Academy of Art and his remarkable skills and mastery of techniques have earned him multiple awards and a full membership of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Although many of Richard’s works are realistic representations of people and objects, they are not just skilful depictions of subjects. His art transports viewers into the middle of an intriguing,

unfinished story and makes them wonder about how it continues. This exceptional artistry transforms everyday spaces and objects into extraordinary images that are both absorbing and haunting. www.bassetlaw.museum.gov.uk Yorkshire Sculpture Park DAMIAN HURST has arrived and his enormous eye-sores cannot be missed as you make your way hot foot from the main carpark to the new and wonderful Weston Gallery. The Weston is a small addition to YSP, and mainly an eatery, but the gallery itself is a lovely airy light space with a really interesting and beautiful exhibition by Punjabi artists THUKRAL & TAGRA whose work discusses the problems faced by subsistence farmers in the Punjab. It may not sound artistically interesting stuff, but the show is beautiful and intriguing and enjoyable and we had an engaging visit. When in doubt, ask the gallery staff. At YSP in particular they are always friendly and helpful. Until 5 Jan 2020 DAVID SMITH will be found in the Underground Gallery and surrounding area. David Smith (1906-65) is the American artist who took sculpture off the plinth and made it in steel and stainless steel. We are so used to seeing what he developed that it perhaps sounds rather obvious. His work isn’t always beautiful, its hard edged and tough, but will be worth seeing, and hopefully the galleries will be well filled and stunning. www.ysp.co.uk Cupola Gallery 13 July - 24 August MAKERS MARK a group exhibition focusing on artwork where the touch of the artists’ hand is visible www.cupolagallery.com Gardens everywhere: The NGS open garden scheme is now in full swing with gardens opening up and down the country and many in our locality throughout the summer. Hello from Mayflower, Our Fundraising Ball is a distant memory, however the money raised was over £5000 which was a huge result for our Sanctuary. This money will be put to good use and help us enormously. Thank you everyone that attended our Red-Carpet Ball. The photographer was brilliant on the evening, also a big thank you to Tony from the Crown hotel and Paul who kept everyone on the dance floor all evening as well as participating in the raffle draw. The prestigious Eastside Magazine photographers also attended on the evening, again a big thank you. Lots of local business’s supported us on the evening by donating raffle prizes. They include, The Ship Inn at Newington, Mayflower at Austerfield, 4 Bottles of Champagne from various supporters. Also Deli 28, KSM, Bellezza, & Betsy Gray all from Tickhill. Walkers garden Centre and too many more to mention, however we really appreciate all the generosity of the small local businesses. So, a big thank you to all. I spoke in the last Magazine about Lottie who had serious ear canal tumours. She has had her operation which has been successful, however she will be deaf for the rest of her life. She is such a beautiful little girl but has a very nervous temperament, so needs that special home with special carers.

MARLO

Our Sponsored Dog Walk was a brilliant day out and so far, has raised £700 and lots more to come in. As you know we have a table top sale on the first Sunday of every month and it is advertised at the end of our lane. However, someone must have thought it was a huge joke to actually steal our board. So, if you are reading this and you are the culprits please return it immediately. We have a lovely Romanian dog in the office at the moment his name is Marlo. He looks like a small Shepherd and a very quiet boy. In the office is a lovely bed and blankets for him, however he prefers a box he has found in the office that seems to fit his needs perfectly I am not quite sure how he gets his legs in there but he seems happy.

Don’t forget our Annual Dog Show at the recreation ground in Tickhill is on the 7th July, please come along and support this super event. There will be Rosettes for 1st,2nd and 3rd in classes as well as stalls BBQ coffee and cakes. Please bring your own chairs and blankets for your picnic. We will be outside M&S on the 13th July rattling our bucket, please come along and say hello we love to hear your stories. Our number if you need it is 01302 711330 Best Wishes

New President

Outgoing President, Ron Lindsay, was delighted to welcome George Collier as the new president. George has chaired our Welfare Committee for the last year as well as being joint Press Officer, with Pete Booth. He will now combine the press role with the presidency of the club. A Tickhill resident since 1989, George is a former secretary of Tickhill Cricket Club and a regular at Bircotes gym. George thanked Ron for his hard work and dedication during his two years tenure. Ron has expanded the membership, been actively involved in virtually every fundraising event and supported dozens of worthy people and community groups during his time in office. Most notably Ron guided the club through the arduous task of gaining full charitable status.

Minibeasts galore! Our learning theme in nursery this half term has been ‘Mad about minibeasts!

We had a visit from a stick insect and found out some interesting facts. We were so excited we decided to get our own as class pets. We have had fun trying to name them and had some great suggests, however we decided on stickman and twig.

In nursery we have bug detectives, spotting the minibeasts hiding all around us. We have been discovering facts about minibeasts, finding out about their habitats and what they like to eat. We have been learning about the lifecycle of a butterfly. Here are just a few things we have been upto, during our investigations.

We have loved exploring and learning lots of facts about the world’s creatures, we will continue our search for minibeasts over the summer.

We have been examining the features of different minibeasts and recording our findings. We have been exploring bug habitats and making own our bug hotels. We have welcomed our very own minibeasts into the classroom and followed them on their adventure, watching them complete their magical journey from a caterpillar to butterfly. TILL WE MEET AGAIN DEAR FRIENDS,

As the wisdom saying in Ecclesiastes states, “There is a time for everything…”. It continues as, “What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end”. I came to the Doncaster Circuit of the Methodist Church as a Probationer Minister almost 11 years ago. Before that, my family had lived in Bradford and had become accustomed to the cosmopolitan city in West Yorkshire. We were therefore a bit anxious in moving to Doncaster, a town which we had heard of as having many prisons and secured units. In the year we moved to Doncaster, I read from the newspapers about the council and a mayor that had made a bad name for Doncaster. However, we were taken aback when in our first week in Doncaster, some people stopped to say hello to us on the streets. Some even went further to have great conversations with us. These made us felt at home because it was almost like living in a Ghanaian community. As a Minister, I have had a fantastic time in Doncaster. I started looking after two churches and finished with five. However, I had great support from my Ministerial colleagues, members of the church and the communities in which I have ministered. I wondered initially whether being a black Minister would have a detrimental effect in my Ministry. I would say that at the start, there were issues of some people understanding my African accent and I understanding a broad Yorkshire accent from some communities. However, as time went on there was a mutual understanding from both sides.

T

nity called for a particular way of life. I also realised that just like Ghana, most of the communities in which I ministered were close-knit, so I had to be careful of my conduct and conversations. As a Minister, my vision in Doncaster was for people to know God better and engage with him in the common things they do every day. I remember that at the start of my Ministry in Doncaster, I was interviewed by a representative of a church magazine about my plans for the church in Doncaster. My response was that I did not come to make people Christians but to help them know who God is and understand their purpose in live because God has set eternity in every human heart. I wonder if the communities that I served can relate to this vision. I believe that God had used me to help some people to realise what great potential they have in knowing God and understanding the purposes of God in their lives. However, I may have to confess that some of my actions and words may have confused some people in understanding who God is. For those people, I wonder if you can forgive me. To conclude, my family and I leave Doncaster and Yorkshire with good memories of a county where most people are warm hearted and look out for each other. We move to Southwick in West Sussex hoping never to forget the great memories of Yorkshire puddings, fish and chips, great landscapes, affordable shops and people with great faith in God. By the way, I wonder if I can use this opportunity to invite you to the leaving service at Tickhill Methodist Church on Wednesday 10th July at 7.30 p.m. This will help me to formally say goodbye to you. May almighty God bless you in all your endeavours and keep you safe till we meet again. Yours sincerely,

Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam (Methodist Minister for Adwick, Bawtry, Harworth, Sprotbrough & Tickhill) Tel: 0130857952 E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk

TICKHILL PARISH ROOM Flaming June it was NOT! The ducks loved it – the weeds loved it, and the lawns just went crazy!! Will we

ever see the sun again?! Hopefully July will bring the summer we long for.

Luckily the Parish Room remains dry and warm and welcoming (I daren’t go down to the cellar in case I am plunged into deep water. I hope our automatic pump is still working). As usual our bookings are varied, with many regulars and a number of one-off ‘clients’ passing through our doors. Probus (Retired Businessmen) are new to us and will now be meeting in the Parish Room on the second and fourth Monday of the month, doors open at 10 for a 10.30 a.m. start. July meeting dates are 8th and 22nd. An important date in our diary Have a delicious afternoon tea in the Parish Room on Saturday 13th July – proceeds to Breast Cancer Care. Cost of a ticket is £10, each of you will go home with a free goody bag. There will also be a raffle. Time of this event 2 – 4 p.m. For tickets ring Amanda on 07984 811144, or ring me on 07840 419763. This event should be a sellout so don’t miss your chance to get tickets!! Another important date in our diary – Tickhill Film Society is back for a brilliant new season. Starting on Wednesday 18th September,

doors open at 6.30 for 7 p.m. start. The first film is Keeping Mum – A British Black comedy (some secrets are best kept … buried!) The subscription for this season will be £45. Guests are welcome at £6 per film. Contact Andy (07340 708404), or Janice (07590 455340) if you would like to become a member, or ask further questions. Possibly another important date – for YOUR diary!! We now have a vacancy for Christmas Day. If you fancy hiring the Parish Room for your family Christmas lunch/dinner, give me a call. It’s perfect for those of you with, perhaps, less room than you need or if you just want to be able to spread out and invite the whole family for a change! Our modern kitchen is fully equipped to deal with up to 60 guests. We can supply crockery, cutlery, table linen and glasses plus the normal oven/ dishwasher/washing up facilities. Take the stress out of trying to cater for too many people at home – ring me then get started on that HUGE guest list! The Parish Room is a perfect venue for all sorts of occasions, not just Christmas. With very competitive hire charges and lovely, modern facilities we should be first on the list for your consideration! For details of availability and prices contact me on 07840 419763. Tickhill Estfeld School Cross Country at Hill House School

On Saturday 18th May 2019 Estfeld competed in the annual Doncaster Schools Cross Country Tournament held at Hill House School. It is always a hotly contested event and approximately 180 children ran the course. It was a fine morning and the Estfeld squad were in fine spirits. As always things don’t always go to plan in competitive sports and we did have a few trips and bumps along the way. I must commend all of the Estfeld pupils for their determination and resilience and for their excellent team spirit in digging deep and working hard for their team and their school.

I would like to say how proud we all are at school of all of the squad for their determination and commitment. I am sure that we will hear more of these athletes in years to come. One of our former pupils, Callie Coates who won this event in 2016 whilst representing our school, is currently training at Doncaster Athletic Club and is the National Champion at high jump – so you never know. Congratulations to them all and to their families for their support on the day. Thank you also to Mrs Dale and Mr Broadhead for their support in training. Miss Risley

Competing for Estfeld were: U11 Boys – Pedros Castellan, Dylan HowellsWhite, Alex Jacobs and Harry Roberts U11 Girls – Eylul Bagatirlar, Alice Green, Sian Howells-White and Daisy Jones U9 Boys – Max Ellis, Sam Henderson, Flynn Hurst and Max Vaux-Anderson U9 Girls – Bethany Clayton, Sienna Fletcher, Olivia Reeve, Orlaith Stevens The squad ran very well over what is a long and difficult course and finished in fifth place overall There were some great team and individual performance and we are very proud of the whole squad’s achievement. Congratulations to our U9 Boys team who won their age group and were awarded the team trophy. Very well done to them. We must especially congratulate Bethany Clayton and Flynn Hurst who both finished in fourth place in the U9 Girls race and U9 Boys Race respectively, and were awarded individual trophies: A special mention also for Sian Howells-White who stepped in as reserve at the last minute and saved the day in completing our team. Thank you Sian! DELIVERED FREE TO OVER 3250 HOMES | WWW.TODAYPUBLICATIONS.CO.UK

TICKHILL TOGETHER Tickhill Together are the group that organise Tickhill’s Scarecrow Festival, 1940’s Day, Christmas Late night shopping, put the flags out for Remembrance Day, put the Christmas trees up, and support other local events. Not only do our events give pleasure to Tickhill residents, they also bring visitors to Tickhill, increasing foot fall to our local shops and businesses which is essential if we are to maintain our unique high street. As you have probably noticed we have lost two shops in the last few weeks, and we don’t want more to go then we must do all that

58

T

we can to support them and keep bringing visitors and residents alike out and into our shops. Tickhill Together has a new chair, in Paul Foster, however, we are in desperately in need of some new members, in particular if the group is to survive we need a secretary, a treasurer and a promotions and publicity officer. If you think that you can help, either by taking one of these roles or by simply supporting the work of Tickhill Together, perhaps by volunteering to help with a single event, then please email me paul@ esspf.plus.com , or ring 07500 926601. Thank you very much.

In our last article we wrote that we were planning for more galas that were scheduled in our calendar of events. The galas come thick and fast, and we

no sooner complete entries for 1, then we are preparing for entries into the next. We would like to acknowledge the hard work put in by Tamsin Watkins and Janice Wilkie who keep us in check with gala entries and payments. Swimming galas, despite the stifling heat, are great events with a wonderful atmosphere both poolside and in the spectator area. Our swimmers continue to do themselves and the Club proud: congratulations to one of our Club swimmers and Bassetlaw A-Squad members, Dominic, who recently competed in the East Midlands Regional Championships with a fabulous performance in his events; many of our swimmers also enjoyed success at the 2-day Rotherham Metro gala in May with a 93% success rate in achieving Personal Bests; and we have recently taken our younger swimmers aged 9 and under to a friendly meet with Retford Swimming Club in June where they had a chance to practise their gala technique without the pressure of the “real deal”! As you can see from the photo, we had lots of smiling faces, and they all did really well. Finally (at least for the

time being) we have another 3 galas between now (at the time of writing) and the end of July. Busy, busy… #nonstopswimming Now for something slightly different… in the coming weeks, when the weather warms up (so I am being told), we will again be participating in “open water” swimming at Hatfield. This was a great event which the Club (both swimmers and parents) enjoyed last year and I am reliably told that the water is “quite inviting”. This has not convinced me sufficiently to join in, so I will watch enthusiastically from the lake-side as everyone else dons their wetsuits and braves the pondweed. I would like to end this newsletter by conveying our thanks to the Tickhill & District Lions association - we are delighted that we have just received some funding from the group which will enable us to further develop as a Club. This is very much appreciated and a BIG Thank You to them. If you are interested in competitive swimming for your child (Stage 7 upwards) so that they can improve their techniques, progress in swimming and compete at Club and County events, you can contact myself, Jo Chestnutt, in the first instance, at bircotesswimclub@gmail.com T

OUT & ABOUT GROUP

T

Twenty of us paid an enjoyable visit to The Yorkshire Sculpture Park at the beginning of June and given the predicted dire weather forecast we were lucky enough to have dry weather until shortly before we were due to leave - thanks to Pam for organising the transport for us. Given that so many people have holidays coming up at this time of the year no further outings were arranged. Next meeting to be held at Castle Close Community Centre on Thursday, 4th July at 10.00 am.

It’s a huge accomplishment to achieve a Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) Award at any level. In the last 12 months alone our Explorer Scouts, young people aged 14 -18, have achieved 1 Queen’s Scout Award; 4 Gold Awards, 3 Silver, 3 Bronze and other awards are in the pipeline as many of our participants are very close to completing their sections at different levels of the Award Schemes. By celebrating the D of E Award and Queen’s Scout Award we celebrate the wonderful nature of our members who show fantastic resilience and tenacity to complete, not only the adventure of the Expedition Section, but all of the other different sections too (Skills, Volunteering, Physical – and Residential at Gold), at a time when the educational climate and society as a whole could so easily distract them from such a huge undertaking. We are lucky in having instructors and assessors within our group who are able to provide the training and facilitate the challenges necessary to achieve these prestigious awards. It is well-known that when a youngster applies for a place in higher education, an apprenticeship or employment, the possession of a D of E Award or a Queen’s Scout Award puts that youngster ahead of the rest.

66

Beavers, Cubs and Scouts all have the precursor awards – Chief Scouts Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards to work towards. These are very challenging and, as each youngster moves through the sections, the awards become more difficult to achieve. Achieve them though they do. Coupled with achieving these prestigious awards most meetings contain some elements of fun be it simply jumping over a rope being spun round with a weight on it (I know – it seems crazy but the youngsters love it, the leaders not so much) – or going down to the playing fields to cook (cremate?) sausages in a methylated spirits powered cooker. Scouting is meant to be fun and you can help provide this fun by giving up a little of your time to join in and see youngsters developing useful skills for life as well as learning compassion, tolerance and a sense of belonging. If you have any interest at all you can talk to me via email (Bob Kitchen – tickhillscouts@aol.com or speak to me in person at Tickhill Gala).
