to the June edition of TICKHILL TODAY. TODAY W elcome While last months magazine was being printed I enjoyed a week in Wales with my family. We were lucky enough to be there during the wonderful weather that we saw just before Easter enabling us to spend several happy days on the wonderful beaches on the south coast of Wales. It seems that more good weather is on its way and hopefully by the time you read this we will be in the middle of the promised heat wave. If the weather reports are to be believed we may indeed enjoy some sunshine over Whitsun and the half term school break will be perfect for outdoor play! I for one have my fingers crossed about this! The next edition will be delivered to you from 25th June. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included in it, is with me by Friday 10th June.
Best Wishes, Paula

Tickhill Castle
Are we being short changed by the Duchy of Lancaster? Why is the heritage of Tickhill kept secret and why is access so difficult to gain? Is it too much to ask that : 1. the castle and grounds are opened regularly for visitors to be able to have a leisurely stroll and capture the history of the place? 2. When they are to be opened that publicity is given so that plans can be made for a visit. So many local people missed out yet again when the castle recently opened its gates on The Royal Wedding Day as they had no knowledge of the event until it was too late. When I spotted a small sign saying ‘Open this afternoon’ and arrived at 4.45pm, I was immediately told to leave as they were closing at 5pm— A fine welcome! GR, Tickhill resident For anyone still hoping to get a visit this year, I understand that Sunday 12th June might be a good day to ensure you are in the Castles vicinity!

Happy Birthday Tickhill Country Market!
Twenty-five years ago in June, Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister; Richard Branson’s boat sped across the Atlantic in record time; Maradona’s hand of God was beating England in Mexico and on Friday 27th, Tickhill County Market opened for business. The Market started in the historic Parish Room and our records of that first Friday show that Fran Wright’s chocolate fudge shortbread cost 36p, Joan Heeley’s fruit loaves were £1.30, Jean Bellamy’s Victoria sponges were £1.00 and June Bishop’s egg custards 30p. Refreshments have always been served and our Friday morning market is still a place where customers can catch up on the gossip and local news. Today, we trade from the premises of the Methodist Church with the plant and garden produce stall at the Northgate entrance providing a warm welcome. Inside, we still sell chocolate fudge shortbread (though not at the same price!), a good range of crafts, many different cakes and savouries together with jams and chutneys, all home-produced and using local ingredients wherever possible. We are committed to the community and support local activities such as the recent Scarecrow Festival, late night Christmas shopping and many other local events. And in the future? We will be extending our present Friday delivery services which we make to the offices & businesses of Tickhill and Bawtry, and for the first time, our preserves and baking will be available for sale in local shops. For further information on Country Markets in South Yorkshire visit www.sycountrymarkets.co.uk

The scarecrows who wanted a brain Hopefully you were able to enjoy the scarecrow festival recently with its many amazing contributions! The children at Tickhill St Mary’s made three “pupil” scarecrows to enter in the competition. It is lovely to see the community come together at an event such as this, where everyone can enjoy themselves and take part if they want to. At the end of the festival, rather then taking the Yellow Brick Road to the Wizard of Oz to get a brain, our scarecrows decided to stay on at school to improve their minds. We are pleased to report that they are making excellent progress! Katarina Martin School Secretary

A RECIPE FOR RHS CHELSEA SUCCESS!
Take one prison door, one Victorian safe, a series of fans and a whole heap of plants and mix them altogether. Spend months preparing, and ten days creating the garden and what do you have? Yorkshire based garden designer Jamie Dunstan, hoping to claim a coveted RHS gold medal at this year’s RHS Chelsea with his ‘Winds of Change’ urban show garden. Jamie, has created a garden that pushes the boundaries of garden design whilst embracing the core principles of modern gardening – home grown plants, garden living and reclaimed materials providing an eco-focus to the garden. “Exhibiting at RHS Chelsea in the previous two years has been a fantastic experience and I have learnt so much from it,” commented Jamie. “This year it was important to me to design a garden that incorporated reclaimed materials - used in a different way from their original intended purpose - and also inspire visitors as to the wide scope of possibilities with regard contemporary garden design.“ Yew hedging, sedum on the roof of the shelter furnished with fireplace and 1970’s retro chairs, and soft grasses and cherry trees form part of the planting scheme which has been carefully selected to provide texture and contrast to the more industrial elements of the garden - pathways from reclaimed cobbles, reclaimed riveted timber and steel, and of the course the architectural feature elements. “This year’s garden is a symbiosis of hard and soft landscaping which has been a joy to create,” said Jamie. “Since Chelsea last year I have had the pleasure to enjoy several commissions ranging from business properties, to bespoke new housing developments, to private commissions. Each one has provided inspiration and this garden is a tribute to the success of the last twelve months.” Sponsors Stockton Drilling, install pipes from land to sea to enable the energy companies to bring renewable energy to their customers. This is their first RHS Chelsea sponsorship. “We are delighted to provide sponsorship for Jamie after he designed and created a striking and innovative garden for us,” commented Fiona O’Connell proprietor Stockton Drilling. “His refreshing approach to garden design and commitment to the project exhibited his considerable talents and ability to demonstrate that gardening can be developmental and forward thinking and we are confident that he can fulfil his dreams at RHS Chelsea this year.”

t Mary’s Heritage Appeal – Conserving the Future.
Following on from the work to the roof, tower and drainage system, St Mary’s church has been offered a substantial grant from English Heritage towards a further significant programme of work to preserve the church fabric for future generations. This comprises work to safeguard the medieval stained glass, further essential repairs to the masonry and the preservation of important monuments on the tower and within the church. The total cost of this work is about £195,000. As well as supporting an investigative phase, English Heritage has offered an “in principle” substantial grant towards the work itself. The church will need to raise about £70,000. We intend to launch the appeal with a Sponsored Walk on Saturday 16th July on a circular route from St Mary’s to Styrrup and back. We hope that refreshments etc will be made available at the Styrrup Golf Club and that many families and friends of St Mary’s will wish to take part. Sponsorship forms will be available shortly. The church will be pleased to share any sponsorship you raise with a favourite charity you may have. Other fundraising events planned include: Saturday 9th July - Children’s concert in St Mary’s (with St Michael’s Rossington). 6.00 pm. Sunday 10th July - Open Gardens around Tickhill.12 noon to 6.00 pm. Wednesday 27th July - Coffee morning at 27,Sunderland Street. 10.00 am to 12 noon. Thursday 18th August - Afternoon Tea at 27,Sunderland Street. 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm.

HOUSING MARKET COMMENT The local housing market remains fairly strong, with sales comfortably ahead of 2010. The somewhat mythical buoyant Spring market is supposedly here, but in reality sales are continuing at much the same level as January to March. Nowadays, most sales are created by people who need to move, rather than just ‘fancying a move’, and for this reason, sales remain fairly constant throughout the year. The strongest area for sales is still up to £250,000, with higher value homes having a limited demand. We have sold a few ‘one off’ or highly desirable properties in excess of £300,000 but these are few and far between. The lettings market remains very strong throughout the price brackets, with demand exceeding supply, especially within the village. 2 and 3 bedroom homes with rents of between £475 and £650 pcm are the most popular properties. Most of these homes find tenants within a couple of weeks. We have waiting tenants!!
CHARITY RUN – RETT UK
On July 10th, I will be putting on the running shoes for the ‘Asics British 10k’. Having not run since my schooldays, I ‘m not expecting to be a ‘contender’ but anything under an hour will do for me. My main aim is not to be beaten by my elder sister! The reason for going through such an ordeal is that my daughter Sienna (pictured) suffers from Rett Syndrome, a severe neurological disorder that is potentially curable. Although this condition is little known, it is the most common cause of severe disability within girls. If anyone is interested in learning more, visit the Rett UK website. If you would like to help us out, I have a sponsorship form in the office on Castlegate, or you can go to ; www.justgiving.com/SallyFStewart Any donation will be very greatly appreciated by myself and many hundreds of other affected families. Many thanks, Chris Thomson Managing Director, Robinson Hornsby (01302 751616)
New Town Planning Consultancy established in the area It is true to say that most people and organisations get involved in the town and country planning system at some stage. Often it is because they have a proposal to develop land, extend their property or change its use. Sometimes it is because development is proposed on land in the locality or a neighbour is proposing development to which the person or organisation wishes to object. Other reasons include wishing to make representations to the Local Authority on its policies and proposed plans for an area. Local professional help with all these matters is at hand. Alyson Linnegar, a Chartered Town Planner has set up a Planning Consultancy based in Haxey. With previous experience in the public, private and voluntary sectors in planning and housing, Alyson can assist individuals, Parish Councils, community and voluntary groups and businesses with planning issues that may affect them. She is also willing to give training sessions on various aspects of the planning system to Parish Councils and other organisations who regularly get involved in development proposals. Alyson can be contacted by telephone (01427 752536) or e-mail (alyson@theruralplanner.co.uk) for further and information advice or visit her website www.theruralplanner.co.uk 24| Tickhill Today

Tickhill Estfeld Year 4 visit to the Peak District – April 2011 Diary Tuesday 26th April 2011 8.30pm When we arrived at Eyam in Derbyshire got off the coach and walked down to the church. When we got there a man named Mr Clifford told us about a terrible disease called the plague that occurred in 1665. Mr Clifford explained about a man named William Mompesson. He became vicar in 1664. Mr Clifford explained about how the people in the middle ages thought of a way to stop it spreading. When we got out of the church I took some pictures and then we went to get our lunch. When we had out lunch we went to play in the park for a bit, it was really good. Then we got on the coach and went to the Gliding club. The Gliding club was very interesting. We learned about the wind sock and we went in the simulator, it was like you were really in a glider. In the evening we went back to the Nightingale centre and played for a bit. William Higgins Wednesday 27th April 2011 Today the class went to the Peak District to see Burbage Brook in the National Park. We went to see it with out guide, Cathy. We measured the height of the water and measured how deep the peat was. Peat is soil that socks up water and carbon dioxide. We also measured the speed of the water, we used dog biscuits for this. I worked with Heather, James and Caitlin. After that we looked at different types of rock and soil. Jasmine Azarang Thursday 28th April 2011 On Thursday we all went for a walk to Mam Torr to see the road that had fallen away. We found a giant pile of shale, some of us found some fossils in it. After looking around MamTorr we went down under ground into a mine called Treak Cliff Cavern. We saw the biggest piece of Blue John in the world. They couldn’t mine it otherwise the whole roof would fall down! After looking at the Blue John, Lisa, our guide showed us some stalactites and stalagmites, she told us that it takes 500 years for one to grow an inch. Phoebe McCoy Nesham and Lazaros Simon
Wadworth Wedding!
In honour of the Royal wedding, the Year 2 pupils held a Wadworth Wedding at Wadworth Church on Tuesday 10th May. Unfortunately the whole of ks2 where not invited to this spectacular event However Receptions and Year1’s were the only classes to attend. The lucky couple to marry, Bryony and Roger, are attending their ‘honeymoon’ in Australia according to the stunning bride (you can choose to believe this if you want). But very much like all the previous wedding couples we think they may be divorced very soon! After a brisk walk to the Church, where parents and children sat together Reverend Price stood at the Alter and the whole church sang a song. “I liked the church because it was exiting but I was so squashed I was going to fall off the end of the row!” said small Y1 pupil Brody Then the organ played ‘Here comes the bride’ as Bryony and her brides maids (including Stacy who loved the wedding dress) walked down the isle. The ushers played along to the music with instruments we’ve never seen an usher do that at any wedding before but Alec, one of the Ushers, seemed to enjoy it anyway. Reverend Price said the vows (but of course not all of them!) and then Cameron the ring bearer handed out the rings which the newly wed couple got to keep as a reminder of the day even after they go to Secondary school and for as long as they both shall live! After the Ceremony and the walk back to school all the tired members of KS1 (and some parents) danced for the remainder of the afternoon. Then the Bride and Groom cut the cake (which we as general roaming Y6 reporters enjoyed thoroughly because of business obviously) and everyone tucked in to the delicious food. Many of the children were chatting about the Wedding and how great it was as they went on their way home. Exploring traditions such as weddings is a great way to kick start adult life with the endless choices ahead of the pupils at Wadworth Primary School. Learning for Life Succeeding Together
New Councillor Following on from the elections of 5th May, I was pleased to find that I had been elected onto Tickhill Town Council. Can I thank those people who voted for me in the Ward elections; it’s a tough time to be a Liberal Democrat at the moment but I’m sure the electorate will increasingly come to see that compromise at national level does not mean betrayal of LibDem principles. Working behind the scenes, our MPs have led a number of initiatives which will benefit both young and old. It seems that we’re not so good at communicating our successes! It’s appropriate then to introduce myself. A retired teacher, I‘ve also done a number of other jobs, ranging from the Civil Service, security guard and barman! At the moment I am employed as a Community Officer for a national charity, working with local people to develop old churches as community resources. Recently, I was awarded a Master’s Degree in Modern History. I hope to bring any skills I may have to bear in my new role on the Town Council, working with existing members to make Tickhill an even better place to live. Dave Adgar
Tickhill & District Lions Tickhill & District Lions are pleased to announce the return of our summer raffle. We haven’t held a summer raffle for a few years, however this year we’ve managed to source some fabulous prizes and so the chance was just too good to miss. The raffle has a ‘holiday’ theme, and prizes on offer include a city break for two people (3rd prize), a pair of first class train tickets to London with a £100 hotel voucher (2 nd prize). The first prize winner will win a fabulous week in a beautiful apartment in Fuerteventura, complete with a £150 travel voucher to help get you there and a choice of dates when you could go. The fully equipped apartment sleeps up to 4 people and sits on the first floor directly overlooking a large freshwater swimming pool. Although the apartment is surrounded by stunning botanical gardens, shops, bars and restaurants are just a few minutes’ walk away. Just a 15 minute walk will take you to the centre of Corralejo, or to white sandy beaches with turquoise waters which are very calm and child friendly. (Those with internet access can find further details of the apartment at www.holidaylettings.co.uk/64941). So for just £1 a ticket there are some fabulous prizes on offer. Tickets are on sale in all of the usual places and we’ll also be selling tickets on our stall at the Tickhill Gala on the 2nd of July. The draw for the summer raffle will take place on the 14th of August at another event we’d like to announce this month. Our 2011 Steam -up will be held at The Oak pub in Tickhill on Saturday the 13th and Sunday the 14th of August. More news about this next month!

TICKHILL BROWNIES I am pleased to say that our pack holiday was a great success, we enjoyed good weather which is always a bonus and all the girls thoroughly enjoyed our days away. We travelled on the steam train twice, walked to Mallyan Spout and also visited Beck Isle Museum in Pickering, a lovely place to visit with exhibits about Victorian life in North Yorkshire. One night we went on a night hike and enjoyed shining our torches into the darkness and drinking hot chocolate. All the girls were a credit to their parents and we had many comments from people about how nice it was to see us out and about and how well behaved the girls were. I will certainly consider staying in North Yorkshire again in the future. My thanks go to Mo, Wendy, Katy, Lorna and Charlotte for making the week such a success, also to Wilfreda Beehive and their drivers who negotiated the narrow roads so well. We now enter the summer term, always the busiest term of the year and one that passes so quickly. We will be beginning our preparations for the Gala very soon, and I am also planning a trip to LaserQuest in Sheffield for an end of term treat. These along with our usual end of term ‘silly’ sports day are things to look forward to in the coming weeks. I have a very few places available in the Monday night pack, if you would like your daughter to join please give me a call. Clare Carr, Brown Owl 07780 703012

Holidaying with (or without) your pet With Easter and the bank holiday weekends over, many people’s thoughts are turning towards planning their Summer holidays. Whether you are eagerly awaiting a long booked holiday or thinking about escaping on a last minute break, it’s important to remember your pets in your plans. Travelling Abroad If you are travelling abroad and planning on taking your pet with you, they may need a pet passport which involves a microchip and up to date rabies vaccination & needs planning months in advance. Staying in the UK Holidaying in the UK is a great way to spend time with your whole family, including your pet. Before you go, remember to ensure your pet’s flea and worm treatment is up to date and that they are microchipped. A microchip is smaller than a grain of rice and permanently identifies your pet so that you can be reunited if they are lost, even if their collar comes off. Holidaying without your pet Even if you are holidaying without your pet, they need to be taken into consideration. Arrange for family or friends to look after smaller animals and remember that any reputable kennels or cattery will insist on your pet having the correct vaccinations before they are allowed to stay. If you would like any more advice on care for your pets during the holidays, pop in and see us at Vets4Pets on Wentworth Road, Wheatley or book an appointment on 01302 556868.

RANSPORT MATTERS
By the time this magazine reaches you, there will be new timetables operating both for our bus service 22 (Worksop – Doncaster) and on the East Coast main line railway, where this is the biggest shake up since electrification! Both are worth while examining, because there are real improvements in both but also a major disappointment. It is good when a positive result comes as a result of pressure upon any commercial concern. Last month I referred to the strange timetable and stationary periods at Wadworth for bus users as the emergency timetable was continuing after the road works had finished. Stagecoach had initially responded that road works would resume after Easter and they weren’t prepared to change their timetable for a short period. Facts fortunately prevailed! The Gas Alliance works to replace pipes under the A630 from the motorway roundabout into Doncaster centre do resume shortly but we are told that they will not affect Balby Road between Sandford Road and the town centre until late August so a revised bus timetable started on May 9th. This timetable shows significant changes from what operated before last January. There are improvements outside the off peak period, i.e. before 9.00 and after 16.30, as well as a changed time for off peak services home from Doncaster. Early morning connections to trains are improved by arrival times in Doncaster at 7.22, 8.00, 8.20 and 8.46. The biggest change homeward comes where the 45-minute gap before 5 o’clock has disappeared. However, the promise to provide a more convenient bus service if you take the train back from Sheffield or Leeds after a day at work or out has not materialized as there is still a gap between 1805 and 1850, little use to anyone coming from Sheffield or Meadowhall – trains arriving in Doncaster at 1807 and 1814 – or Leeds – trains arriving at 1807 or 1815. I am raising this issue again with Stagecoach as we want a timetable which meets customer needs rather than suiting operator convenience! Expression of local views can make a difference but we haven’t got the whole way yet! But I will still encourage readers to use public transport whenever possible; the more usage there is, the greater our leverage to obtain better services. John Hoare

Let’s See
Tickhill is fortunate to have a number of valuable assets. Most conspicuous are the buildings: the imposing medieval Parish Church, the remains of the Norman Castle, the Friary, the 18th century Market Cross (or Buttercross) and the Parish Room with a facade over 500 years old and a history even older. In addition there is a rich concentration of Listed Buildings of various styles and histories. One of the most popular visitor attractions in the Borough can be found at the scenic Mill Dam area near the Castle, a welcome oasis of tranquillity in a busy world. More modern assets can be found in the range of quality shops, the availability of services like doctors, dentists, places of worship and a library. There is a wide variety of voluntary organisations to cater for people’s interests. But there are hidden treasures too and it would be good to know more about them and how many there are. I mean the varied skills and talents of some of Tickhill’s citizens. There are known to be some excellent artists whose work is good enough to be exhibited in Galleries in the region. There is at least one top class photographer, and probably others. One resident is an authority on Dolls Houses. There are groups that encourage the work of embroiderers and flower arrangers. There may indeed be many people whose hobbies like model making, woodworking, jewelry, needlework skills and others deserve to be seen by the wider community. But who are they? Should Tickhill hold an Arts and Crafts exhibition? It would be good if enough quality exhibits can be found. There is clearly much ingenuity and imagination in the town, as demonstrated by the recent Scarecrow Festival. There could be potential problems. Entries should be of a high standard and not just the early work of aspiring enthusiasts that may not yet be suitable for public exhibition, so there would need to be rules of selection. Is there anyone out there with the necessary organisational skills and experience with exhibitions who, perhaps with others of like mind, could define the aims and criteria of such an event, find out what might be available and explore how, when and where such an exhibition could be held? Tickhill should be proud of its talented citizens and their accomplishments. Let’s see if an exhibition to show off their work can be arranged. Philip Mottram (Tel: 742484)

Tickhill TARA It was our first AGM and we felt very proud. We held it late as there were so many bank holidays in April. We had a happy and successful AGM and patted ourselves on the back for our first year and the little successes we have had plus the help we have given to a lot of people. We have had ups and downs, friends and oppositions but all in all we have settled down comfortably in our skin as Tickhill TARA. We really enjoyed the Scarecrow Festival weekend and thank John, Linda and Lindsay and the others for organising it - everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. So glad we opened the Hall for refreshments and a WC stop ,these are very rare now) - the WCs - not the refreshments. It was lovely meeting friends old and new from all over and showing them round the Hall and receiving great interest in the building – a vast amount of people either didn’t know it existed or that it was for use to all the residents and tenants. We had a closed meeting for the keyholders a while ago and it became unanimous that all of us wanted to promote the Hall and get it full of bookings and TARA have some more events in the pipeline we hope to have a Penalty Shoot Out inflatable on Gala day as well as opening up for other Joint Community events. One of the residents in Castle Close organised a Royal Wedding Celebration which was another good idea for the Hall. So come on and look round and if you have a good idea for usage of hall please let mestknow. Next meeting will be Wednesday 1 June at 1.30p.m. in Communal Hall THEN Wednesday 29th June at 1.30p.m. in Hall to bring us back up to date Trisha Marsh Secretary 742917

TICKHILL - BUT NOT TODAY! This month we have some very recent photographs—but ones which will certainly become a part of Tickhill’s History. Thank you to everyone who sent me pictures, I am sorry I couldn’t include more of them. It is the end of an era in more ways than one at Tickhill Church. The pictures show the scenes of detection at the churchyard after the Horse chestnut tree came crashing down at about 1.20pm on Sunday 1st May. Visitors and locals had been walking in the area to see the entries for the scarecrow festival and eye witnesses rushed to ensure that no-one was under the fallen branches. The sight the sound and the dust were all very frightening to those closest. The white blossomed 85 ft high tree amazingly fell in the direction which would cause the least danger—away from houses and walls, flattening a few graves and covering a path.

I’m sure that residents can come up with a few captions for some of these photographs as Canon Gordon Taylor surveys the scene in the last days before his retirement. Here are a few starters ‘That tree was all show & no foundation’ ‘I know I asked for a sign but this is a bit much!’ ‘Are my roots showing?’ No vicar even with your connections you cannot get this to rise again!’ Geof Rennison

Tickhill and District Local History Society June again and another season of meetings over – seems no time since last September! Because the closing date for this edition of Tickhill Today is before our May meeting you will have to wait to find out whether anybody was poisoned by Eric Houlder’s plagues and potions at our meeting on the 19th May. However, provided your scribe survives the evening a full report will appear next month. In April our thanks were due to Simon Griffiths who stepped in at short notice to talk about and demonstrate medieval armour. Steve Payne was dressed in (and at one point brought to his knees by) a 13th century suit of chain mail armour which weighed almost 80lbs (about 36Kg for those more recently educated) and which severely restricted movement. This would have been worn by a Knight on horseback and one can only feel sorry for the poor horse! Simon also had a suit of armour of the type worn only 120 years later, by then the way to make steel had been discovered which made the armour lighter and stronger – also shiny, hence the expression “a Knight in shining armour”. Unfortunately there was not time to demonstrate this but perhaps Simon will pay us another visit in the future. Meantime Hello Wadworth! In the January edition of Tickhill Today we told you about Dennis Walker’s “living memories “ article on our website entitled “A Pre War Wadworth Childhood” and said that a second part of this would be published on our website later. By the time you read this the second part entitled “Wadworth in World War 2” will be on our website. To find it go to www.tickhillhistorysociety.org.uk, click on the “Living Memories” tab at the top of the screen, then click on “Mr Dennis Walker Pt2” from the list of names on the left of the screen. I can promise everybody, not just Wadworth residents, a really fascinating glimpse of real life in WW2 – quite different from that depicted in many films made years later!.

U13’s Winning Start
Both of Tickhill’s U13 sides got off to a winning start in their respective sections of the Doncaster Junior Cricket League. U13A in the West Section eased a 10wicket victory over Hatfield. Charlie Harrison with 3 wkts for 5 runs helping to restrict the visitors to 45 for 9 off their 20 overs. Matthew Mickley 17no and Charlie Morris 13no saw Tickhill home off just 6 overs. In the East section U13B began with a t win over Bawtry, Jake Wildsmith with 2wkts for 8 runs and james Dallinson 2 for 13 keeping Bawtry to a modest 91 for 8 off the 20 overs. James Needham 27rtd and Chorley Nolan 24 gave Tickhill the perfect start and with Harry Brewster 14no, Tickhill reached their target with 4 overs to spare. Also in the East section, Tickhill travelled to Fishlake and came away with the spoils, again James Needham 25rtd and Chorley Nolan 25rtd help to set up a challenging total of 112 for 8. The game looked to be heading for a close finish until Josh Court’s devastating spell of 2 overs, 2 maidens, 4 for 0 reduced Fishlake from 55 for 3 to 57 for 7, wicket keeper Sonny Tennant claiming 3 stumpings in the process. The hosts never recovered from the position and were eventually all our of 72 in the 19th over. Freddie Foster taking the final wicket to wrap up a well earned 40 run win.

Tickhill Town Council Newsletter 3 months is a very short time in the employment life of a clerk and we are sorry that Mrs Oliver did not feel able to complete her duties in the time allowed and, therefore, we were unable to agree terms at the end of her probationary period and she decided to leave. With the departure of some long serving Councillors and Clerk at the end of last year we expected some changes, but research and the complete change of many systems Mrs Oliver suggested created most of the additional work she undertook (and for which she received payment in addition to her salary). Reduction in the Council’s Insurance premium was welcomed but her review of Pavilion costs required Councillors to fully revise long standing staffing arrangements – which had always been the largest part of the costs. Consequently the Council agreed to her recommendations which, regrettably, resulted in the redundancy of the 4 Pavilion Attendants (who between them had served the Council well for more than 50 years) and the introduction of a caretaker system. This new system will require Pavilion hirers to be more involved in access and exit arrangements from the Pavilion but there will be a considerable financial saving (very much at the bottom end of the figures Mrs Oliver suggested) from 2013 when the costs of redundancy payments have been absorbed. The Council would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank our Attendants for their services to the Council and, more importantly, to the Pavilion Hirers and sportsmen and sportswomen over so many years. .
Because of the short resignation notice we were given, our old Clerk has agreed to temporarily resume Clerking duties until a permanent replacement is found. However the Election regulations and his own commitments mean that the usual Council meeting dates have to be changed. Details appear in the Town Notice Boards for the time being and the Boards also include the advertisements for the new Town Clerk and the Pavilion Caretaker. ickhill Scouts
It doesn’t seem very long since the last Tickhill Today – time flies when you are busy. Having just finished off the Scarecrow Festival we had then to prepare for the next month. Over the past 30 years or so we have attended the annual St George’s Day Parade in Doncaster. This event takes place on the closest Sunday to April 23 rd and is usually very well attended. Apart from the parade a simple service is held in both Doncaster Minster and St Peter’s in Chains. This year St George’s Day and Easter fell on the same weekend. This meant that the parade and service could not be held then or for the next 2 weeks. We felt that the date of the parade and service was too far removed from the actual date so, in conjunction with St Mary’s Church we organised our own service on April 27 th. This service was very well attended by both the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and their parents and leaders. This service was one the last services which Rev Gordon Taylor would officiate at and the Scout Group made a small presentation to him during the proceedings. We presented him with solid silver Thanks Badge which signified our heartfelt gratitude to him for his forbearance, kindness and care which he always extended to us in all the services we have held in St Mary’s whilst he was vicar there. His constant kindness and consideration always made holding a service in the church a memorable and pleasurable experience even when things went slightly askew he was there to smooth over the glitches without anyone really noticing that anything had happened. At this service we were also able to give people an insight into what an investiture is. Youngsters go home and tell their parents that they either are going to be or have been invested. I was able to invest Delia Smith, Carol O’ Neill and Damon Fisher into the Scout Movement as leaders. Our conversion to co-ed scouting is progressing. We now have 2 scout troops, one meets on Mondays and one meets on Fridays. Both troops have boys and girls in them and have space to take other youngsters aged between 10.5 and 13.5 who might wish to join. The Explorer Unit spent Saturday 16th May at Eden Camp near Malton to try and understand it was like to live in the last war. Obviously, a short visit could not give the full impression but, over the following weeks they will learn what it was like to live under rationing by trying to cook meals using the food stuffs available during war time. They will also be asking their parents, grandparents and anyone they can find what it was like to live in the war. To lighten the mood the visit to Eden Camp was rounded off by a visit to Scarborough for cricket on the beach, ice cream by the yard and heaps of fish and chips. We are now approaching Tickhill Gala time and look forward to seeing you all at the event on July 2nd. We have Bezerkaz Circus; Ben Loughrill – a chainsaw sculptor; Ridgeside Falconry and the Grenn Oak Morris Men along with the usual bouncy castles, slide, trampolines, side shows, charity stalls, gift stalls and food and drink.
