Eyes to the Skies for Tickhill Business Association Launch Miss South Yorkshire (Caroline Welch) helped to release over 35 balloons from the Buttercross in Tickhill, to celebrate the official launch of the recently formed Tickhill Business Association. Each balloon represented a local business and included prize vouchers for the lucky recipients. The Tickhill Business Association has been set up by a dedicated group of local, Independent businesses, united by the passion to ensure that Tickhill’s High Street remains healthy, for the benefit of the whole community. Tickhill is loved for the way it is and if we are not careful our high street will look like any other and will lose its charm and appeal. We want people to think about the implications of where they spend their money. They are planning to organise events which attract more visitors to the area and are encouraging all local businesses to join and benefit from this collaboration. The main objective is to raise the profile and reputation of Tickhill as an esteemed destination by increasing foot-flow to the town and encourage customers to utilise all that is on offer. The group are currently developing a Website www.Tickhill.org to promote Tickhill and use as a platform to announce all their forthcoming events & activities. “We are pleased to offer our unanimous support to the Tickhill Business Association, it is vital to have this business structure in our town. It is evident that this association is the result of dedication and hard work and without this we feel the town may suffer. It is imperative to keep our businesses open and flourishing as boarded up businesses offer nothing for individuals or communities.” Ray Hill, Mayor of Tickhill Anyone interested in finding out more about the group should contact its Chair, Nikki Davies at Carlson & Davies Fine Chocolates

et’s Celebrate - Tickhill Methodist Church’s 175th Anniversary In June this year, members of Tickhill Methodist Church will be celebrating 175 years of worshipping in the existing building, opened in 1837. The original building had two floors, with a large, elevated and curved pulpit at the front so that the preacher could be seen by those in the pews downstairs as well as by those in the gallery. The Chapel was a substantial, spacious and lofty building with walls of ‘grey stone’ (quarried at Roche Abbey) with seven large upper windows, six large lower windows and double-doors at the front entrance, with a step. There was an interior porch with stairs from either side leading up to the spacious gallery. The gallery was supported along its front edge, from below, by regularly spaced circular wooden pillars, and fitted with ‘box like’ pews. From two doors in the porch two aisles led down to the pulpit and communion area of the Chapel with wooden panelled ‘box’ pews either side of them. There were some wooden forms at the front for those who could not afford the pew rental. However, Methodism was alive in Tickhill much thearlier than 1837. Nonconformism existed in Tickhill in the mid 17 Century when Quaker, George Fox visited ‘friends’ththere in 1652. It was written in “A Short History of Tickhill Methodism”, produced for the 150 Anniversary, that in 1987, Methodism had been active in Tickhill for at least 211 years. The first “House to be Licensed” for worship by the Methodists, was a cottage at 81 Doncaster Road, the householder being Thomas Hickson. The granting of a Licence prevented ‘mobs and malicious folk’ attacking the meeting, something which had happened in the past, and anyone charged would be put in prison until the next Quarter Sessions and have to pay a fine of £20. Sometimes, sermons were preached in the open air, probably near the Buttercross, as the Doncaster Road house was not big enough to hold all the folk who wanted to listen. The house on Doncaster Road was soon too small and a new house was looked for. Until recent modernisation, a house with ‘Chapel-like windows’ stood on the corner of Mangham Lane and St Mary’s Road, formerly Back Lane & Bland Lane. The land was bought, for this property, from Francis Wright, by Trustees for the Chapel, in April 1817, it was the meeting place for the Methodist congregation from 1817 to 1837. A few years ago, the present owners of the house found out about its history and have mounted a plaque on the wall to indicate that this property had been a Methodist Chapel . This property again became too small and inconvenient and a new chapel was built on Northgate in 1837. The Foundation Stone was laid on Monday 20th March 1837 by Rev J. Bromley. The Trustees set up a ‘building fund’ and £1,300 to £1,400 was raised probably by means of subscriptions. Among the Trustees were five farmers (who transported the stone free of charge), a timber merchant, a painter and two drapers and it is probable that their skills were employed in the building and decorating of the Chapel. The new Chapel was able to seat about 500 persons and was to be a ‘monument to the zeal and devotedness of the Wesleyan congregation of Tickhill’. As the numbers in the congregation declined the Chapel became too big and discussions took place to alter the building to make it more fitting. In 1956 a decision was made to have plans drawn up to reduce the size of the Chapel and fund raising began in earnest. The building work began in October 1961 thand the re-opening and rededication took place on Saturday 26 October 1963 To celebrate 175 years of worship on this site, there will be :Tickhill & District Male rdVoice Choir in Concert on Saturday 2nd June at 7.30 pm, in the Chapel. Preachers on Sunday 3 June are 10 am - Rev Noel Irwin and 6.pm - Mr Dennis Rix. Flower Festival in the Chapel, opening with a service on Friday evening 8 th June, Saturday 9th th June and Sunday 10 June. Refreshments will be available. Preachers for this Anniversary weekend are Rev Christine and Mr Robin Hawke Bramley Brass Band will play during Sunday afternoon and will include some Hymns in the form of “Songs of Praise”. Academy Consultation The Head and Governors are exploring the possibility of STWCC acquiring Co-operative Academy Status. This will further our Co-operative Trust status and allow us to operate within a framework of freedoms which means more choice in the delivery of the curriculum and greater control over how our money is used. Academy status will support continued improvements in our achievements, reputation and what we can offer our community, and is a logical progression for the school. The Co-operative Academy proposal is part of our strategy for change, building on our successes and will place our school at the cutting edge of enterprise, technology and learning as we achieve more by a strong sustainable partnership with committed like-minded people. The consultation process is in place and feedback can be found on our website.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Claudia Ridgeway, Nicole Miles and Emily Hewitt (Year 8) who competed at the National Final of the Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition - one of only eight teams. Their topic “Is the world a better place with or without music” was delivered brilliantly and the school is very proud of them and their achievement. Congratulations to Reece Lucas who has won a three year contract with Rotherham United Football Club.

Well done to 28 of our students who passed the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Silver Expedition this month – and in extreme weather conditions! STWCC are one of the top performing schools in terms of D of E expeditions and has a flourishing group of students undertaking Bronze, Silver and Gold from year 10 onwards. Bronze and Gold Expeditions coming up are to the White Peak area of Derbyshire and the North Yorkshire Moors.

A FUNdraising time at the Scarecrow Festival The Scarecrow Festival was a great success for both primary schools in Tickhill. Our joint entry of the Queen, Prince Philip and their corgis was a hit with the judges and was awarded second place. Both schools are delighted with the result. During the festival, three of the pupils from Estfeld took the opportunity to raise funds for good causes. Toby Rainbow sold lemonade throughout the day, raising £84.23 for Water Aid – a charity that works to improve access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in 26 countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific region. Faith Bartram and Grace Irwin ran a tombola stall and a “guess the name of the teddy” competition. Their efforts raised £133.05 for three charities, Children’s Heart Surgery, Little Hearts Matter and Amelia matters – all of them support children and the families of children who have congenital heart disease. Our photograph shows Toby, Faith and Grace with “Her Majesty” back in school. Well done - we are very proud of you all.

TICKHILL BROWNIES - Theatre Review

The Brownies went to see the CATS performance of High School Musical in April. I asked a couple of them to write a review taking into account the thoughts of other brownies. It was interesting and not boring. The dancing and acting was brilliant. We sat at tables, not in rows like at the Civic Theatre. It was similar to the original musical. The scenes were set well, Sharpay had a good character. The costumes were realistic. People were good at their parts, especially Gabriella. The singing was excellent. The acting was good, Ryan was very good. It was very funny just like the real one. The person who played Kelsie looked a lot like the real Kelsie. One Brownie thought that they got changed very fast. We hoped everyone liked it because we did. Holly Barham We really enjoyed High School Musical because the actors remembered their lines, they made their singing and their dancing really realistic and fun. Sharpay was really funny when she walked off the stage. The show was exciting because things were sudden. Kelsie looked a lot like the real person who acts Kelsie. The costumes were really good. Altogether it was a brilliant show. Katie Wells From all the Brownies, a very big ‘thank you’ for such a good show, one of the girls enjoyed it so much she is thinking of joining CATS to join in the fun!

Fundraising weekend at Sandbeck Park for SAFE@LAST Local Children’s Charity, SAFE@LAST, has benefited from two fundraising events held at the weekend at Sandbeck Park, the stately home of Lord and Lady Scarbrough. The SAFE@LAST Annual Clay Shoot Trophy returned on Saturday 21 st April and the event was generously sponsored by Torne Valley Farm and Country Stores. The event has been held on the magnificent country estate, Sandbeck Park near Maltby, the home of the Earl and Countess of Scarbrough , for six years. A ladies event followed on the Sunday with a Fashion Show and Afternoon tea. The event was organized by the Doncaster St. Leger Inner Wheel Club which has chosen SAFE@LAST as its special charity during the year. Guests enjoyed a catwalk show featuring the clothes and accessories of Yasmine of Bawtry, followed by afternoon tea in the large marquee on the lawn. Finalists from the Miss South Yorkshire competition were some of the models showing off an exciting range of stylish casual through to evening and special occasions wear. It is hoped that the weekend will have raised over £10,000 to enable SAFE@LAST to Lady Scarbrough Jenny Atkinson (Inner continue delivering services to vulnerable children and young people across South Wheel) and SAFE@LAST Founder Hilary Yorkshire. Massarella Lord Scarbrough, Patron of SAFE@LAST said “My wife and I are always pleased to support SAFE@LAST and young runaways by hosting such well organised and diverse events. We were particularly thrilled to welcome new guests to both events as well as some familiar faces. We hope that, like us, all who attended thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and will spread the word about what a sterling job SAFE@LAST does in order to keep children safe” SAFE@LAST Founder Trustee Hilary Massarella added “We’ve had a fantastic weekend and are very grateful to the Earl and Countess of Scarbrough for generously hosting these events at their beautiful home. The rain showers didn’t detract from two great days of entertainment and the fantastic amount raised will help us to continue to support children and young people across South Yorkshire” 16| Tickhill Today

Tickhill St Mary’s C of E Primary and Nursery School Royal scarecrows This year’s scarecrow entry was a joint effort created by the children of "Tickhill Schools Together" - Tickhill St Mary's and Tickhill Estfeld Schools. Each school made a scarecrow and some corgis which were then put together to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. I think you will agree that the children worked really hard to produce a wonderful Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth and corgis. The judges thought so too as they awarded the schools 2nd Prize! Well done everyone! Y5 go to Whitby Our year 5 children went on a residential trip to Whitby, where despite an inclement forecast they managed to dodge the showers and keep dry. They enjoyed town trails in Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay as well as beach combing and a visit to the science centre, Whitby Wizard. For many the biggest adventure however, was being away from their family for the first time and enjoying some newfound, safe independence. A jolly good time was had by all and the icing on the cake was that the children impressed local residents and visitors to Robin Hood’s Bay with their good behaviour and pleasant manners. ICKHILL SCARECROW FESTIVAL

WOW! FABULOUS! BRILLIANT! Just three of the many comments we received about the Scarecrow Festival last week. I didn't hear a single negative comment, apart from about the weather - which was actually a lot better than it might have been if the previous few days were anything to go by! Events around Tickhill on the day raised funds for individual groups and several charities. Sarah Bartram's stalls at the Oak were a huge success as were Fred's rides, and the donkeys were a big hit with grownups and children! Tickhill Together's small sub committee that organised the Festival this year have done Tickhill proud. After a fairly late start we finally got things moving and just went from strength to strength. We are now looking for new ideas for next year. Over 70 scarecrows entered the competition and were on the official route this year. The winners were as follows: 1st - Tickhill in Bloom - Tickhill in Bloomers 2nd - Estfeld and St Marys Schools - The Queen and Prince Phillip 3rd - Georgina Thorpe - Pinocchio Highly Commended rosettes went to: Team Smith - Olympic Gymnastics Lauren Whysall and Stuart Howartson Cinderella and Prince Charming Le Sept - Lucy Lastic Fentons - BB Crow Children's Competition winners were: 1st - Jessica and Eve 2nd - G Murphy 3rd - Olivia Roby The Raffle had too many winners to mention individually, but first prize went to Cliff and Mona Wyard of Saffron Crescent. Thanks to everyone who bought tickets, and those who donated lots of excellent prizes. Thanks should go to all who entered the competitions and entered into the spirit of the whole Festival - the weather didn't put anyone off and we hope next year will be even bigger and better. Watch out for notices early in the New Year. If you can come up with any new ideas or suggestions for improvements to the Scarecrow Festival in 2013, please contact me or any other member of Tickhill Together. I couldn't possibly thank everyone - so if I have missed anyone out - my apologies! Janice Birkinshaw (07590 455340) 24| Tickhill Today

Have you spotted the Queen's head straw mural at Brookfield’s Farm on Worksop Road?

We thought it was the perfect way to celebrate 2012, both for Tickhill's scarecrow festival and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. It was painted by Andrew Farmer, a talented artist and teacher at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College. To see more of Andrew's work, look at www.andrewfarmerfineart.co.uk If you haven’t seen it yet you might still be in time—hopefully it will remain in place until just after the Jubilee.

ost Chord, based in Maltby is a charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and wellbeing, of people living in residential homes and struggling with dementia, by helping them to communicate through the power of music, song and dance. By using interactive musical sessions our professional musicians strive to stimulate those areas of the brain which are still responding for those who may be unable to walk, talk, feed themselves or communicate in any way Lost Chord relies totally on grant funding and voluntary donations to help affect the lives of thousands of sufferers living in residential homes. We currently organise more than 1100 musical sessions a year in over 100 venues on the scheme. This includes 13 residential homes in the Doncaster region affecting the lives of hundreds of people in your community. The evidence of the power of live music in unlocking memories for people with dementia is striking and undeniable and their sense of achievement is overwhelming. This helps confirm clinical evidence that there are certain areas of the brain associated with music that remain potentially responsive, when all other areas have deteriorated. Our achievements: Some who are unable to communicate speak for the first time in months Some who have not spoken for some time often sing all the words to familiar songs. Some with aggressive tendencies can become visibly calmed. Those who are confused and unable to sit for any length of time are often still and sit for far longer than anyone thought possible. There are more than 800,000 people diagnosed with dementia in the UK and this figure is set to double by 2050. Dementia is the biggest killer in the UK second only to heart disease. In order to keep our current programmes running we need to raise £270,000 each year. Sadly we always have a waiting list of homes all desperate to utilise our services therefore support from local businesses and the community is vital.

How you can help:

Make a donation: It couldn’t be easier to donate to Lost Chord either by post or online. Visit www.lost-chord.org.uk or call 01709 811160 for further details. Attend an event – we organise a variety of exciting events throughout the year – visit our website for more information www.lost-chord.org.uk or call 01709 811160. Become a volunteer – we have lots of opportunities for people wishing to volunteer. Even if you only have an hour a week to spare you’ll find rewarding work from assisting musicians at concerts to helping at fundraising events. Full training is given and expenses paid. Please contact us on 01709 811160 to discuss further.

ubbish!

What do you do on a wet Bank Holiday? You may think it rather sad but I spent the best part of an afternoon trying to create space in my filing cabinet and, if you ask, yes, it was a success. The point of all this is that it is surprising what gems one unearths, interesting pieces set aside just in case they may come in useful. I found one such and it was ten years old and yet just as relevant as ever, it came from the Government and was titled ‘Plastic Bag Tax Assessment’. The figures in it may be out of date but the arguments are not! In 2002 UK consumers used approximately 8 million plastic carrier bags in a year, 134 for each of us! And how many, I wonder, ended up wrapped around trees or disfiguring public places? The purpose of the Government paper was to say why they were not going to do anything about plastic bags, whatever the evidence from other countries. That evidence was interesting. The Irish levy on plastic bags, used to finance a range of waste management projects, resulted in a 90% decrease in the number of bags used, less cost to retailers, and less litter. All thoroughly positive and apparently wellreceived by the public but the British Government decided to do nothing because it was too small a proportion of the waste stream to make a significant difference. Has no-one heard of small beginnings leading to major advances? The strangest evidence came from India, where Mumbai banned plastic bags because they were clogging up the city’s sewerage system and Bangladesh where their presence in drains was making flooding worse. I don’t think that they are part of our drainage problems! Of course, matters have improved in the past ten years, with many supermarkets running ‘bags for life’ campaigns, shop assistants asking if you want a bag rather than automatically giving one and some plastic bags now being bio-degradable. At least one English town has no shops providing free plastic bags at all. But there is a case, both in terms of pollution and of the use of valuable resources, for going further. However, as in so much else, the promise of the Coalition to be ‘the greenest government ever’ seems to have been forgotten in economic recession, even though the arguments for ‘going green’ are just as relevant as in a time of prosperity. 'Vaccies'

Bawtry Phoenix Theatre

11th to 14th July. The Phoenix Young Players (the youth group of Bawtry Dramatic Society) will be putting on their Summer play from 11th - 14th July at the Phoenix Theatre in Bawtry. The play is called 'Vaccies' which was a commonly used nickname for evacuated children during the Second World War. Written by Tony Jones (himself once a 'vaccie') and directed by Tony and Sarah Cowan, the play follows the story of a group of children from London who are evacuated to a North Yorkshire village. It begins with their hostile reception in the village and their feuds with the local children at school. Kenny and Mary are billeted with abusive and exploitative foster parents. Reconciliation and friendship with the local children results in an ambitious plan to rescue them but things don't turn out as they expected. Tickets, £6 for adults and £5 for over 60's and under 18s, will be available from 11th June by telephoning Tony Jones 01302 532335 or by e.mail on jones.acjr@btinternet.com. They will not be on open sale anywhere else. Bawtry Theatre invites local Performing Arts Groups to take part in September celebrations. To celebrate 80 years of theatre in Bawtry, the Phoenix Theatre on Station Rd will be holding a Performing Arts Festival in September 2012. Events will include a number of different plays, a day of film and various music performances. As part of this, the theatre is offering an opportunity for local performing arts groups to use its newly refurbished venue, free of charge, for one evening or daytime event between 3rd and 23rd September. You pay no hiring fee and keep ticket receipts, providing an opportunity to raise funds for your group or for a charity. There are still a few evenings available. Please contact Tony Jones on 01302 532335 or 0777503646 for further details. Can you provide a loving home for some characterful vintage theatre/cinema seats? We are trying to find a good home for our theatre seats, which are being taken out and replaced later this month. There are around 70 Vintage seats circa 1900 to 1950, with cast frames which bolt to floor. Red upholstery, generally in good condition. Seat dimensions 45 cm between arms and Seat depth 45 cms front to back. Will be dismantled for transport. For sale as one lot or in smaller quantities. Transport responsibility of purchaser. Offers welcome. Available towards end of May 2012.

39TH TICKHILL GALA ORGANISED BY TICKHILL SCOUT & GUIDE ASSOCIATION

Saturday 7th July 2012 Another year has gone by and once again the Gala is upon us. Our organisation is going well, the arena attractions 3SIXTY BMX Display Team and Tom Longton’s Working Sheepdogs have been booked and many people have already booked stalls for the day. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the businesses who have once again supported our Gala Programme.

We call it a programme but actually it is the “Entry Ticket” to the field on Gala Day. On the day, this is our main source of income and all proceeds go to the maintenance of our building. Without this building there would be nowhere for us to meet and do the worthwhile job that all our volunteers do week in week out. The cost of entry to The Gala is: Adults: £3-00 Children: £1-00 Family: £6-00 We thank you for your continued support and hope you have a great day out! 32| Tickhill Today

ponsored horse ride in aid of local charities

Two well loved local charities are calling all horse riders to bring their horses to take part in a sponsored ride on the beautiful and exclusive Osberton estate near Worksop. SAFE@LAST, a charity that works across South Yorkshire with young people at risk through running away, and Helen’s Trust, who support people with terminal illness to be cared for and to die at home throughout North Derbyshire and Sheffield, are organising the event to raise funds and awareness in order to continue their vital work. The event takes place on Sunday 10th June and two routes will be available covering either approximately 12 or 6 miles. The routes will take in the beautiful surroundings of the Osberton estate and will include areas not usually open to the public. There will even be some optional jumps for those who want to add a little more to the day. SAFE@LAST Communications Manager Clare Sherratt said “We’re very excited to be working with Helen’s Trust on this exciting event which is new to both charities. We hope lots of people will come and support these fantastic charities and have a great day out with their horses.” Lucy Nickson, CEO of Helen’s Trust, added “We’re very grateful to Mr Foljambe for the generous use of his magnificent estate and Estate Manager Mark Cavell for all his help organising the ride. We would like to encourage all those who are lucky enough to own or have access to a horse to support us by gaining sponsorship and coming along to enjoy the day.” For more information and to register online please visit weekendatlast.co.uk or call SAFE@LAST on 01909 566977 for a paper registration form.

eep your pet smiling!

Did you know that it’s just as important to look after your pet’s teeth as it is your own? Dental disease affects 70% of adult cats and dogs and is mainly preventable. As with humans, pets can suffer from dental disease which can lead to further health problems such as heart, liver and kidney disease. Signs that your pet is suffering from dental disease include: bad breath, unpleasant looking teeth and a reduced appetite or weight loss. Feeding your pet dry food and giving them special dental chews can help keep your pet’s mouth healthy. You can also brush your pet’s teeth with a special brush and pet specific toothpaste – ask your vet for advice on how best to approach this. And finally, book your pet in for a check-up! A dental check with a vet or nurse can help spot potential problems early on and they can advise whether your pet needs a scale and polish to keep those teeth sparkling clean. Doncaster Vets4Pets now open in Wheatley, Armthopre and Edenthorpe. Call: 01302 556 868

Wadworth go to ‘Krazy’ Kingswood Every year to celebrate the end of SAT’s Year six go on a residential trip to Kingswood, Staffordshire. This year they are setting off on the 20th of May to the 25th of May. From past results everybody who has gone on this trip seems to enjoy it – there are a variety of activities, which we are all looking forward to ,that take place including: quad biking, Go Carting, laser quest, and a karaoke (for the ones that like to sing) This is a great opportunity for our school and other children to have fun and forget about SAT’s. Also just to get them in the ‘holiday’ mood one night of the week while they are there - they have a party/disco where they can enjoy good music and food! Mr Edmondson, one of the adults that will be supervising this trip said that he is looking forward to the zip wire most because it is good fun and also scary because when your standing on the edge and looking down over the side you get butterflies in your stomach but when you’ve actually gone down the line you love it! Also Mrs Mosley one of the other adults that is accompanying the children on the trip said that she is also looking forward to the zip wire as well as the quad biking. She is looking forward to going with Mr Edmondson as he can always have a laugh . Tom and Lauren from Year Six are two pupils that are going to Kingswood and said that they are really looking forward to the experience .The activity they are most looking forward to is the quad biking, and can’t wait to get on and have a ride. They are really looking forward to it and do not have any negative feelings about the trip /activities. Look out for our next article to find out what Mrs Mosley, Mr Edmondson, Lauren and Tom thought about Kingswood! Remember to keep up with our articles ☺ Written by Lauren O and Mackenzie

June Arts Review

The Season of Sculpture Parks is upon us. Once upon a time there was only the YSP and now everywhere you go you trip over sculpture lurking in herbaceous borders of stately homes and arboretums. Why do they do it?…well it must be because you - the cultural visitor enjoys them – and since they are all at it – there must be huge interest out there, the exhibitions keeps the gardens functioning and lively when the full flush of summer flowering is waning – these are hugely costly events to mount when you think about what darned heavy stuff sculpture is. Already open is Burghley at Stamford – famous for its equestrian 3 day event and fabulous Elizabethan mansion . The sculpture - a mixed exhibition entitled all encompassing ‘Fauna and Flora’ is sited in a lovely large garden of mixed areas which is of interest to plant and tree enthusiasts. Its worth the trip just to see the mistletoe in the parkland trees. http://www.burghley.co.uk/html/sculpture.html This summer the Yorkshire Sculpture Park at West Bretton is exhibiting sculpture by the major 20th century Spanish surrealist artist Joan Miro. This continues until January 2013. YSP has become a day-out destination. A great café, fab shop and lots to look at in its vast grounds. Over the past few years the main summer exhibition has been by living contemporary sculptors. www.ysp.co.uk Closer to home is Doddington, just north of Newark. This is the first year that the gardens of Doddington have hosted sculpture and they are to site over 250 pieces by 60 sculptors which will be open through August. Doddington is a wonderful setting and an interesting Elizabethan house which has remained in the same family since it was built and one of only two whose original gardens that have not been updated and destroyed with ongoing garden design fashion through the centuries ( the other being Hardwick Hall). Doddington escaped this ignominy because the family owned other properties and didn’t bother to redesign this one! www.doddingtonhall.com A one week only sculpture event happens in Harpswell near Gainsborough from 16 to 24 June at Hall Farm, sited in the 3 acre garden. During this week there will be a craft tent, musicians performing at the weekends and plants for sale. www.the-ropewalk.co.uk/sap10/sap09.htm Leicester University Botanic Garden, 3 miles south of the city centre, has for the past 11 years staged a large exhibition of sculpture in its 16 acre site, attracting 30,000 visitors every year. This years show is entitled ‘Interesting Times’ . The curator has put together a group of sculptures that demonstrate that nature can be cruel and unpredictable whilst at the same time being beautiful. 1st July to 28 October. www2.le.ac.uk Also there is Chatsworth. From March to 1st July Anthony Caro’s sculpture surrounds the lake, and to finish off the season from 7 September until the end of October Sothebys will be clearing out their cupboards again and strewing stuff around the grounds. Last year’s Sothebys show, considering the hugeness and quantity of work was a big disappointment. It really did feel like they had found some stuff at the bottom of the old barrel and shipped it in. The most awful of all the work there were 2 enormous painted bronze Damien-enfant-terrible-Hurst horses ( a unicorn and a Pegasus) which were sited at the bottom end of the lake, like 2 bits of detritus blowing around a well loved beauty spot. One of my most un-favourite of British sculptors is Lynn Chadwick (1914 – 2003), - unemotional mannered stylised posed.... no - I am not a fan and I have to say I enjoyed his work the most. Enough said. B minus Sothebys. Lets hope there is some better work this year. Chatsworth does have its own permanent sculpture collection and the work that the Duke of Devonshire has commissioned and sited is much better. One of the most recent additions are huge woven structures near the kitchen garden by Derby based Laura Ellen Bacon. She worked on site weaving these bulbous shapes in willow over still rooted old trees. These alone are worth the entrance fee to the grounds. http://www.chatsworth.org/attractions/sculpture Tickhill Artist Bryan Day’s exhibition at Brevon Art, Doncaster Bryan Day was born in 1934 and brought up in Maltby and Tickhill before moving to Carlisle in 1959 . He now lives in Tickhill after 50 years away. After holding many one man shows throughout the UK and abroad, he is currently concentrating specifically on watercolour and has developed a semi-abstract approach to his work. Brevon Art, 6 Bass Terrace, Thorne Road, Doncaster DN1 2HZ 2nd until 29th June. The preview is Friday 1st June 7 - 9pm. www.brevonart.com 48| Tickhill Today

ICKHILL BROWNIES Every once in a while there is a Brownie who is truly outstanding in her commitment to Girlguiding, Charlotte is an example of this so when she knew she had to leave I asked her to write a short piece about her experiences as a Brownie over the last four years – here is her story. If you would like to be involved in giving other girls an experience such as Charlotte’s, please give me a call on 07780 703012. Clare Carr, Brown Owl My Life as a Brownie When I was 7 years old I moved up from Rainbows and became a timid young Brownie. At my first meeting I immediately realised that this would be a truly enjoyable experience. Soon with the help of Brown Owl and the other Leaders I had found my feet and knew what to do; before I knew it I was making my Brownie Promise. Making your Promise isn’t scary whatsoever; it is simply a commitment to the way you will behave. At the ceremony I received my Brownie Box and Promise Badge. The Box contained a Brownie Badge Book and a Brownie Adventure Book; I could start working for my Badges! There are so many to choose from and at least one will suit the type of person that you are. The next barrier I had to cross was persuading my parents to let me go on Brownie Pack Holiday. I was slightly nervous, I had never slept away from my parents for more than one night and this was two – but I was still determined to go! Finally they gave in and I was soon on my way to Hesley Guide House in the centre of a wood. Going on Brownie Pack Holiday was one of the best things I have ever done. I ended up going on four in my career as a Brownie; one to Whitby for a WHOLE WEEK!!! And I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of each one. The agenda is so jam-packed with things to do; campfires, walks through the woods, games, arts and crafts and helping cook the meals. You couldn’t feel homesick even if you tried. I also went to many special “once in a lifetime” events including Fusion at Harewood House celebrating the Centenary of Girl Guiding. We had lots of fun. There were stalls selling everything you could imagine, an activity playhouse and even live music. This was an unforgettable experience as were many others. I finally ended my Brownie career on 17th April 2012, three days before my eleventh birthday, with 46 badges, a Brownie uniform that was once too big and is now too small and many, many wonderful memories. If you, my reader, are thinking of becoming a Brownie, then please do, because becoming a Brownie was one of the best things I have ever done in my life time. A big thank you to Brown Owl and her fellow leaders for without them none of this would have ever happened. Charlotte Cummings

lossie and Paul The final concert of the Tickhill Music Society season on 20 April was a novelty. A French woman from Nimes in the south of France, now living in Darlington, who had just adopted British citizenship, teamed up with a talented guitarist. Advertised as featuring works by Edith Piaf and Django Reinhardt they actually ranged further afield. There were two famous Piaf songs (‘La vie en rose’ and, inevitably, ‘Je ne regrette rien’) delivered in authentic sounding Piaf style. The only Django Reinhardt piece played by Paul Donnelly was a request from a member of the audience. The fast-fingered adornments that decorated the basic melody were all the more amazing when it is realised that the third and fourth fingers on Django’s left hand were useless following a fire when he was 18. His unique style of playing made the Quintette du Hot Club de France renowned, a group founded jointly by Reinhardt and the jazz violinist Stèphane Grappelli. The lively, uninhibited and amusing comments by Flossie Malavialle introduced us to a range of folk style songs. Many were love songs but there were others like ‘The child with troubled eyes’ and the Irish song from World War I of a relative visiting a soldier’s grave. There were pieces by the Americans Eva Cassidy and Rogers & Hart and the Belgian Jacques Brel. Another was sung in Portugese. So, a varied collection supported by some virtuoso guitar playing. A lively end to a highly successful season.

UEEN’S ENGLISH. There has been much talk recently about the best method for teaching children to read, with Synthetic Phonics being advocated, a system that concentrates on Vocal Sounds rather than on Whole Words. I have had doubts about this claim ever since years ago I came across a verse by ‘Anon’ on this theme. I take it you already know Of tough and bough and cough and dough? Others may stumble, but not you On hiccough, thorough, bough and through. Well done! And now you wish perhaps To learn of less familiar traps. Beware of heard a dreadful word That looks like beard and sounds like bird, And dead; it’s said like bed not bead -For goodness sake don’t call it deed! Watch out for meat and great and threat (They rhyme with suite and straight and debt) A moth is not a moth in mother Nor both in bother, broth in brother, And here is not a match for there, Nor dear and fear for bear and pear. And then there’s dose and rose and lose -Just look them up -- and goose and choose, And cork and work and card and ward And font and front and word and sword, And do and go and thwart and cart -Come, come, I’ve hardly made a start. A dreadful language? Man alive, I’d mastered it when I was five! But then there’s something else I fear, I never could spell dire rear! Anon Can you remember how you learnt to read? I can’t. I expect it was just by being talked to and having stories read. I can’t imagine that my little local primary school with its three teachers in the 1930’s had much to do with education theories. But we learnt to read. Philip Mottram Magazine Articles For several years now ‘Tickhill Today’ has kindly printed an article of mine in most issues. For my own convenience I have collected a selection of these into two booklets: Book 1 has 14 articles from between 2006 and 2009 and Book 2 has another 14 from 2010 to 2011. There are a few spare copies of these booklets available at £1.00 each (to cover printing costs). Anyone interested should ring me on 742484. Philip Mottram 54| Tickhill Today

ickhill and District Local History Society

At our April meeting Linda Brook, suitably attired in period costume gave us a fascinating talk on 15th Century table manners. Those of us who thought that “pre television dinner” table manners were an invention of our parents, grandparents or even the Victorians as a means to discipline their children were sadly mistaken. Table manners in the 14 th century were every bit as rigorous as they used to be (and perhaps occasionally are) in 19 th and early 20th Centuries with much attention paid to hygiene and hand washing. That said, calls of nature were acceptable in the dining hall with suitable receptacles provided for both sexes! Altogether a very interesting talk for which we thank Linda very much indeed. By the time you read this our formal programme of meetings for the 2011/12 Season will be over but behind the scenes there will still be much going on. As some of you may already know the Society is working on a new book of Tickhill’s history which we hope to publish in the Autumn of 2013. The book is intended to be comprehensive but easily read by all age groups from young adults upwards. It will comprise an opening chapter outlining the development of the town over the last 1000 years followed by chapters on specific subjects including Tickhill Castle, Housing, Trade and Commerce, Social life etc. We are keen to ensure that we have got the format right to appeal to as wide a readership as possible and so, from mid July there will be a copy of the first chapter “The Origins and Development of Tickhill” available for you to read in the Library together with a short form asking for your views. Please do go to the Library to read it and help make this your book about Tickhill. The names of all those who have helped in this way will be included on the “Acknowledgements” page of the book unless you specifically ask us not to do so.

Over the past couple of months there have been some rather odd comments about village life and its quirks. Whilst they were mildly amusing they did not amount to much. What concerns me is the blatant disregard for road markings especially in front of the church. The road is quite clearly marked with the correct lanes for exiting St Mary’s Gate and entering either St Mary’s Road or New Road. Not only is the road marked but there is a very big illuminated bollard indicating that vehicles should keep left. Despite these markings, a large number of motorists take no notice of them and pass to the right of the little island. This is clearly wrong and is dangerous. Please, for your own safety and everyone else’s follow the road signs and prevent totally unnecessary accidents. Thoughtlessness, selfishness and carelessness threatens lives especially on a road which is often busy with youngsters leaving or arriving at school, playing in the playground or entering and leaving the Scout & Guide Headquarters - not forgetting the residents of that end of St Mary’s Gate. March saw usth celebrating our 50th anniversary with a thanksgiving service in St Mary’s Church on March 28 . The service was attended by all the beavers, cubs, scouts, explorer scouts, their parents and many guests whom have been involved in Scouting in Tickhill over the past 50 years. This was a lovely uplifting event with an air of happiness and joy which is often lacking nowadays. The group chairman – Peter Ogilvie presented Bob Kitchen with a silver Thanks Badge, Brian Read – the man who resurrected scouting in Tickhill 50 years ago – said a few words and John Marsden led the prayers. A Beaver was invested into Cubs during the service representing the onward progression of the very youngest members of the group through scouting. In early March we learnt that Mavis – a long term supporter of the group – had died suddenly. Her cheeky smile and twinkling eyes will be sorely missed. Even though she had some mobility problems she always turned up and joined in the “fun” and made considerable amounts of cash at the same time. We pass on our condolences to her family and friends. We held our spring Jumble sale recently and raised over £300 for scout funds. We were very pleased to see that all Mavis’s family, who normally helped at Jumble Sales, turned up and helped out as they had done before. We were also able to send a car load of clothing to the cancer recycling shop at Thurcroft after the event. Our thanks go to all who gave jumble, all those who helped sell it and those who came to buy it. Without all these different people we would not have had a sale. As the weather improves (!!) and nights draw out we will be putting more of the “out” into scouting. The scouts and explorers entered a pedal car competition in Wombwell and held their own even though they did not win. A further outing of the pedal cars occurs at the end of June when we will be entering 4 cars into the 24 hour challenge at Shennington. 4 teams of explorers entered the national Apex Challenge event at Bramham Park over the weekend of April 14/15. The Monday scout troop spent a very tiring day in York visiting Yorvik, the National Railway Museum and the Castle Museum. Once again, they showed that they were a splendid set of youngsters who behaved impeccably whilst having a lot of fun. Despite one of the wettest Sundays on record in April 32 members of the Scout Group attended the annual St George’s Parade in Doncaster. Thankfully, there was no parade but over 900 people joined in the service at St George’s Minster. We are now preparing for a 4 day Jubilee Camp at Walesby where there the scouts will be taking part in anything from rifle shooting to climbing, canoeing to all day discoing (?). There will be a street party, beacon lighting and a dramatic firework display to celebrate the actual jubilee. 62| Tickhill Today

Tickhill Town Council

This edition should reach you in time for what I hope is going to be the much celebrated Diamond Jubilee event. This will be held at the recreation ground on the 4th June 2012 12pm onwards. All the children from Estfeld and St Mary’s school will have a Jubilee mug to commemorate the occasion and a competition to complete with lots of teddies to win. There will be games for all, music and you are encouraged to bring a picnic and a gazebo or blanket. There will also be a Punch and Judy, so everyone please come and enjoy the day. I have been given some lovely prizes for the raffle from local businesses and residents and the proceeds from this will go to offset the free refreshments that will be provided. Thank you all who have contributed. Donations are still welcome no matter how small. During last month we had cause to call a public meeting; I hope all who attended had their questions answered. I would like to remind you that if you do have any questions you are always welcome to attend the Public session of the Council meetings held on the fourth Tuesday of the month, 7.00pm Tithes Lane Tickhill. The first 15mins are reserved for Public matters. It is difficult for me personally to answer your postal questions as all have to go to Council first, so please do attend. Any urgent matters that concern D.M.B.C. must be directed to them. As I am only parttime I cannot always deal with urgent matters myself, however, I always endeavour to help. I can always be contacted via the Website or by e mail for none urgent matters. All the accounts and documents have now been passed to the Internal Auditor and notices by now will have been in the Council Display Unit outside the Library. Minutes are held at the Library for all to read with an abridged version is to be found on the website. The Council now have the opportunity to draw up a Neighbourhood Plan and will be setting up a Steering Committee. This will be on going and each member of the community will be invited to make comments. This is an exciting period in Localism and it is the intention of the council to make sure that the community has what is right for them. There will be a long consultation period and if you would like to know more please attend the Public session of the council meeting. I am sure there are a lot of you out there with a lot to offer and the more resources we can draw on from Tickhill, the better it will be. So if you are doctors, planners, architects, secretaries, teachers, mums, dads, carers, cleaners, cooks no matter what you do, you all have the right to be involved and will have the skills to help. Please come forward. We have also had this month the Launch of the Tickhill Business Association. We wish them luck in their venture. The businesses are an important part of our community, without them where would we be? I do hope to see many of you on the 4th June at the Jubilee Celebration and also at the public session of Council meetings.
