Year 2 Trip to Tickhill Castle The Year 2 Class at Tickhill St Mary’s CofE primary school are learning all about castles. Their topic called “I’m the King of the Castle!” As part of their learning they wrote some lovely ůĞƩ ĞƌƐ ƚŽ ƚŚĞ ŽĐĐƵƉĂŶƚƐ ŽĨ dŝĐŬŚŝůů ĂƐƚůĞ ĂƐŬŝŶŐ ŝĨ they could visit. An Afternoon at the Opera

On Friday 11th May, we were delighted to welcome the English Touring Opera to our school. They performed Shackleton’s Cat, an opera written for children that portrays the story of Ernest Shackleton’s ill-fated expedition on his ship the Endurance to Antarctica. It was a bittersweet story of adventure, disaster and rescue. The story was a complex one, yet our pupils from Y1 to Y6 were enthralled throughout. It really was a wonderful performance. The cast are all professional opera singers (apart from Mrs. Chippy the ship’s cat) and have performed in many operas all over the world – from Tokyo Philharmonic to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and numerous venues between. In addition to performing for us, they were also SHUIRUPLQJ IRU WZR HYHQLQJV DW 6KHI¿ HOG /\FHXP Theatre. So what did our pupils think of the performance? What did they have to say to the cast? “The musicians were amazing.” “It was very inspiring.” “It was different and just amazing.” “We are really glad that you visited our school.” “Carry on visiting schools so that other children get to see the opera.” “It has made me want to see another opera.” And how did it make them feel whilst they were watching and afterwards? 20 TICKHILL TODAY

At school we will be holding a Royal Wedding in our Reception Class to celebrate Harry and Meghan’s big day. Guests of honour of course will be our scarecrows, who were highly commended in the Scarecrow Festival. Thank you to all of the pupils and staff who made them – well done!

IS CRAMP CRAMPING YOUR STYLE?!? Several patients have asked me about cramp recently. Here’s the low down… What is cramp? Cramp is a sudden and involuntary muscle contraction and occurs most often in the calf muscle. The strong contraction typically pulls the foot into a pointed position, creates a visible hardening of the muscle and can be surprisingly painful. Other PXVFOHV FDQ EH D΍ HFWHG DQG FUDPSLQJ RI the muscles in the feet and hamstrings is QRW XQFRPPRQ 7KH D΍ HFWHG PXVFOH PD\ feel sore for several days (in the same way that a muscle can feel sore after exercise). What should you do during an attack? Cramp will tend to resolve by itself but the level of discomfort felt during an episode normally brings with it a degree of impatience so you may want to try to hasten the recovery! I’ve certainly started to experiment with more exotic plants. It’s D OLWWOH ULVN\ RQH KDUG ZLQWHU FDQ ZLSH RXW D WHQGHU VSHFLPHQ %XW EHWZHHQ QRZ and September there’s every chance that many tropical plants will survive if SODQWHG RXW LQ RXU JDUGHQV 7KH\ QHHG D VXQQ\ VKHOWHUHG VSRW OLNH WKH RQH \RX would choose for petunias, tobacco plants and rose beds. Try Cannas. They have luxuriant broad spearshaped leaves, which can be deep green, purple or even striped with orange or yellow. 7KH\ SURGXFH YLEUDQW Ă€ RZHUV ZKLFK ORRN OLNH gladioli but better! 2U KRZ DERXW SODQWLQJ VFDUOHW GDKOLDV OLNH ‘Bishop of Llandaff’, which also sports attractive bronze foliage. The Council are now pleased to announce the appointment of the Clerk designate, Mrs Maxine Booker and welcome her to the strong team that exists within the Council. Maxine is working from the Pavilion Office, Tithes Lane, Tickhill: please visitors by appointment only. Our present Clerk Margaret has already started her preparation for her semiretirement and the change over is well in hand. The Tickhill Town Council new Web-site is now up and running with a new look and the Council are now able to archive documents and much more.
