June magazine already – Where is this year disappearing to? In my last introduction I mentioned hoping to read a few books while enjoying some Easter sunshine. I did indeed manage to polish off 7 books, while enjoying a family break in Lanzarote. Only 3 from my ‘to read’ list – the others just ones that other people had left behind on the book swap shelf that I liked the look of!

June brings with it the longest day, Father’s Day and the commencement of Summer Fairs, charity days and family fun days. Look out for details this month and over the coming issues, for events around the area. Not only are they fun events, but also valuable fundraising opportunities for so many local good causes. If you would like to see an event publicised in these pages please let me know.
Enjoy June and I will be back in a months’ time with your July magazine!
Best wishes, Paula x

The July issues will be delivered to you late June. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th June. Please keep a close eye on closing dates if you would like to include things over the coming months, they can sometimes fall earlier than people expect and we are often working to very tight timescales to meet print deadlines. I hate it when I have to tell people they are too late to promote their events!

Tickhill Bowling Club By the end of April, all of our four teams have been in action in their respective leagues. Our singles teams have done very well. Of the four matches played, they have, between them, won three and drawn one. This draw was quite a result when you think about it. There are eight players on each side and, of the eight games, we won four, lost four but the aggregate scores of each club was exactly the same for both teams. Our doubles teams have fared less well. In fact of the four games played, we have not won a single one although some of the results were extremely close with an equal number of games being won by each club but Tickhill having a lower aggregate score. As I have said in previous months, if you would like to try your hand at this delightful sport, (sets of bowls are available for you to use) please come along on any Tuesday or Thursday afternoon from 2 o’clock. The game offers fresh air and exercise with good companions and not forgetting the good fun - so please come along. If these times are not convenient please ring me and an alternative time can be arranged. On Tuesday of this week, two ladies joined us on a glorious sunny afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we hope to see them in future sessions.

The 2013/2014 winter season of Tickhill Music Society concerts ended on Friday 11 April with a concert by the Sterling Wind Trio plus a Soprano. The music was preceded by the AGM of the Society ably dispatched by the Chairman and Committee members.
Walk 1 (departs 10.15) An easy, no stiles, walk of under 2 miles along the towpath towards Hayton, returning by boat.
Walk 2 (departs 14.15)
The music began with a pleasant Shepherd’s Song by Karl Doppler (not to be confused with C.J.Doppler the physicist). The delightful ‘Dolly Suite’ by Fauré, originally for piano duet, was here presented in a sensitive arrangement for wind trio, starting with a limpid Berceuse and ending with a boisterous finale. The first half ended with another shepherd, this time ‘on the rock’ in Schubert’s tuneful setting.
An easy, no stiles, walk of under 2 miles along the towpath towards Hayton, returning by boat.
The second half was an interestingly varied selection of works, It began with a sprightly setting of Shakespeare’s ‘Lo, Here the gentle lark’ (should that be ‘Hear’?) and ending with a canine collection called ‘The Dog Chronicles’ by an American lady. In between, the highlight was perhaps the Trio by Howard Blake, with its rippling Allegro and lyrical Waltz.
Walk 4 (departs 14.00)
Walk 3 (depart 10.00) Board the Seth Ellis for a trip through Whitsunday Pie Lock towards Hayton, and then a 4 mile walk around Hayton and Clarborough before rejoining the canal and walking back to the Hop Pole.
Board the Seth Ellis for a trip through Whitsunday Pie Lock towards Hayton, and then a 4 mile walk around Hayton and Clarborough before rejoining the canal and walking back to the Hop Pole.
The Sterling Trio was nicely balanced with excellent performers, in particular the piano of Lauren Hibberd providing a solid foundation for the other players and the accomplished soprano of Elise Nurre Dye. Altogether this was an agreeable and satisfying concert, rounding off a most successful season in fine style. The audience surely left looking forward to September and the Boyce Chamber Orchestra in the Parish Church.

Tickhill slimmers celebrate losing almost 22 stone and helping two local charities A group slimmers from Tickhill are celebrating losing almost 22st (307.5lbs) between them and raising money as part of a sponsored slim for good charity campaign. Members of the Tickhill Slimming World group, were taking part in a national campaign called Slim for Good running across all 11,000 Slimming World groups in the UK and Ireland. The aim of the six-week drive, was to help people to lose weight and improve their health while raising money for a good cause in their local area. The slimmers in the Tickhill group voted for the worthy causes they wanted to support and chose Sheffield Children’s Hospital & Mayflower Animal Sanctuary. The members are also ran a Tombola stall at the Tickhill Scarecrow Festival for the charities. Local businesses very generously donated items for the stall as have members of the Slimming World group themselves. Christine, who runs the group and has lost 5 stone in total herself, says the Slim for Good campaign gave members of the group an added incentive to achieve their weightloss dreams: "Supporting a worthwhile cause has given everyone a special focus and real commitment to their weight-loss goals. For many members being sponsored has been a great way to kick-start their weight loss and for others it’s been a boost to help them stay on track. At Slimming World we pride ourselves on the care and support we give each other to lose weight – we’re known as the club with the big heart – so when members started talking about raising money and what we could all do together, there really was no stopping us. I’m so proud of what the members in the group have achieved during the last six weeks. In total we raised £111 for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital and £95 for the Mayflower Animal Sanctuary." Christine hopes the group’s success will inspire other people in the local community to lose weight and improve their health too. She says: "Six weeks doesn’t sound like a long time, but in that period I’ve seen so many changes, people losing weight, feeling happier and healthier than ever, and their confidence increasing. And the really great 16

thing is that as they’ve lost weight the Slimming World way, they’ve achieved all this without ever going hungry or feeling deprived." Anyone wanting to join the Tickhill Slimming World group is welcome every Thursday at 5:30pm & 7:30pm at the Parish room or they can call Christine on 07825 686 437 for more information. T

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery (Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.) Time is flying past with another busy year. The latest Information Session was on the topic of Health Awareness and the organisation of this was very ably initiated by Kath Ripley and held in The Parish Room in Tickhill. It is our intention to run this event for the Patients in Harworth and Wadworth in the near future. So please watch this space if you are interested in attending.
underway and will be ongoing for up to 12 months. We will feedback the outcomes as they become available and in the meantime we ask for your understanding and patience. The survey asked for suggestions for any future events and received the following suggestions:Diabetes awareness, Dietary advice, Blood pressure monitoring, Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease Thank you to all those who passed on suggestions and completed questionnaires. Lastly some disturbing figures:
The event was extremely informative and interesting and helped us realise the importance of the organisations out there aiming to help us stay informed about our health and wellbeing as well as being active and included in our local community.
In March 27.5 hours were wasted at The Tickhill Surgery and 33 hours were wasted at The Colliery Surgery by patients not attending appointments.
Staff from Doncaster NHS, Doncaster Health Well Being Officers, Public Health, The Carers Service, Dieticians, Diabetic Liaison, the Test your Health Nurse, plus representatives from Pilates and The Tickhill & District Walking Group all attended.
We can be contacted by email at:-tickhillandcollieryppg@ yahoo.com or via either surgery.
A big thank you goes to all those people who turned up to man stalls, pass on information, advice and to carry out health checks. • Early diagnosis is important. • A healthy diet, stimulation and exercise help everyone to stay healthy. A good number of patients joined us in the Parish Room and The Test Your Health Nurse proved especially popular with queues forming for the free health checks on offer for those aged 40 to 75 and not already under medical care and attendant regular checks. Throughout the morning PPG members were in and around Tickhill inviting people to the event, asking for questionnaires to be completed and recording questions and comments. All these questions and comments will be passed to the new Practice Manager for discussion and feedback. The largest sector of comments were about the difficulty of getting an appointment. We can report that the new Practice Manager Mr Russell Gardner has set his first priority as a full review of the appointment system and the appointment booking system. This review is already 18

Year 6 School Visit London and Kingswood In early April the Year 6 pupils at Estfeld were fortunate enough to visit the Kingswood Centre at Ashford and London. The Kingswood Centre has state of the art outdoor and adventurous pursuit facilities and Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed being daredevils for the week as they abseiled, zip-wired, and took the leap of faith. It was fortunate that most of them had a good head for heights. More leisurely pursuits included archery, laserquest, circus skills, quad-biking and swimming. The party also took a cultural day-trip to London. The first highlight of the day was a visit to the National Gallery where the pupils viewed paintings by the Impressionists and other prominent artists. As it was a bright and sunny Spring day, the party enjoyed a picnic lunch in Trafalgar Square. Following lunch the party walked along Whitehall, stopping outside Downing Street; they also looked in at Horse Guards Parade and Parliament Square and continued their walk over Westminster Bridge past the Houses of Parliament. There were lots of photo opportunities and the children enjoyed capturing the sights on camera. Next stop was the London Eye from which the party enjoyed a bird’s-eye view of the famous landmarks and architecture of the capital. The final event of the day was a leisurely river cruise along the Thames – with a commentary about the history and landmarks of London, it was a relaxing and informative end to the sight-seeing. It had been a long day. We were very proud of the pupils; their excellent behaviour and attitude, especially their good manners, was commented on by several people during the visit. Throughout the week the pupils took the opportunity to try new experiences and challenges. For many the events were outside of their comfort zones and it took real courage and determination to try something new and challenging. Well done to them all for being resilient and for making the most of the opportunities on offer. The week was rounded off with a disco, where the group dressed to impress, danced the night away at Club Kingswood and had the chance to perform on the karaoke. A great time was had by all!

Gala News Stalls If you are planning on having a stall at the Gala, we need your applications in as soon as possible, especially from the local societies and groups so we can make a plan of the field. Hopefully we can allocate pitches so you’ll know exactly where you’re going on the day and we can send out all the details nearer the time.
Food Festival
WEEKEND- 8TH JUNE 1-5PM
The Food Festival that will launch on Gala Day, on the field and in the town, will run from Saturday July 5th to Friday 11th . Look out for the posters in the shops with special offers, new dishes and promotions. The majority of the food-related businesses in Tickhill are taking part so it’s a great week to buy local and maybe discover something new!
Kids Zone This year, all the activities for children will be in one area. There’ll be games, archery, face-painting, art and craft activities, and Poppet’s sweet shop will be providing all you need to decorate gingerbread men and biscuits. There will be races in the main ring, Beat the Goalie with Tickhill Juniors and create and cook your own pizza with the Scouts. The 106 Field Squadron, who are based in Sheffield, will be setting up camp by the Green Lane entrance, and not forgetting Green Top Circus drop-in sessions and RLC Rockets cheerleader tryouts!
The Big Lunch A month before the Gala on Saturday 7th June, Tickhill Town Council will be hosting ‘The Big Lunch’ on the Tithes Lane Recreation Ground. Look out for the Gala and Food Festival information stand where you can pick up your Great Tickhill Bake-Off application and stall booking forms. We look forward to seeing you there! We now have a ‘Tickhill Gala’ page on Facebook, as well as our event page and Tickhill Gala group. All the pages are kept up to date with what’s going on and all forms and posters can be downloaded from the Tickhill Gala group. The forms are also available at KSM and in the Scout and Guide HQ. Work out at Work
Workout at Work Day (#workoutatwork) is on Friday 6th June. This annual awareness day promoted by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) enables Physiotherapists to highlight the benefits of healthier work habits and increase levels of physical activity. Poor work habits include sitting for long periods, repetitive tasks, missing breaks and prolonged periods on electronic devices. This can increase the risk of developing aches and pains (musculoskeletal disorders) as well as contributing to stress, depression and anxiety. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimate the majority of days off sick are as a result of these sorts of problems and cost employers 10.4 million working days in 2012. As experts in the management of musculoskeletal disorders, Physiotherapists can facilitate patients’ recovery as well as help prevent injury and ill health in the first place. Active staff could mean reduced sickness rates, fewer compensation claims and reduced expenditure on temporary staff. Other likely benefits include increased employee satisfaction, better productivity and improved retention. The Work Foundation reports that for every £1 invested in wellbeing initiatives, businesses get a return of £3. Working out at work can mean active travel to and from work, desk based exercises or may involve a workplace walking club or lunchtime activity. Work station assessments and ensuring breaks are taken can prevent problems building up. Access to health information can make a difference and the CSP’s advice leaflets can be downloaded for free ( www.csp.org.uk) For information on how Blizard Physiotherapy are supporting Work Out @ Work Day visit www.blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk 26

St Mary’s School... As part of our topic ‘Growing’ Reception went on a visit to a local small holding. To get to the small holding we had to follow a map. The children were all very good at following the map and checking we were going the right way. As we passed by the pond we saw a group of ducklings.
“They were very small.” said Amy. Once at the farm we saw lots of animals and found out lots of information about the animals; what they eat, where they live, and what their young are called. We were very lucky as we all had a turn at feeding a lamb.
Jessica said “They were very hungry.” Christian said “That (the milk) will help them grow into a big sheep.” What a fantastic morning we had and we have learnt lots of new information.
Hello everybody! I am going to tell you about the fabulous year 3 Easter concert. Our narrator Thomas said the tale was about forgiveness, hope, betrayal and new life. This story is a story filled with those themes. Most of the children took the parts of Mary, Jesus, the disciples and the Roman Soldiers. There were some people who sang songs on their own and they were fantastic! Well done to Maisie, Georgia and Leona. The audience loved it and the Church was guarded by magnificent Roman Soldiers who were very stern and frightening. It was a tremendous event with lovely music and superb acting. All year 3 really enjoyed doing it and we have got some very talented actors and singers in our class. Athena Lunn.

Michael Dickinson to run 3 marathons in 3 months! Some of you may have not heard that I am currently on a bit of a fitness drive and hoping to raise a few quid with a personal challenge. Some of you may know that in the past I have undertaken a few challenges and raised a few quid especially for the National Autistic Society, well this year I am undertaking something similar and just thought I’d let the people of Tickhill know. I am looking to run 3 marathons in 3 months for 3 charities in 3 countries (admittedly England, Scotland and Wales – so not going too far away) • 13th July The Wales Marathon (Tenby, Wales) http://www.thewalesmarathon.com • 6th September The Highland Perthshire Marathon (Aberfeldy, Scotland) http://highlandperthshiremarathon.co.uk • 5th October The Mablethorpe Marathon (Mablethorpe, England) http://www.mablethorpemarathon.com Albeit I could not accurately get them in 3 calendar months but they are with 12 weeks from first to third. Charities equally getting portion of the fund money raised are: • British Wheelchair Athletics Association • National Autistic Society • Cancer Research UK My funding page is www.virginmoneygiving. com/michaeldickinson If any of the above mean something to you then any contribution that you can give would be really appreciated. Running 3 marathons in 3 months to raise money for 3 different charities, all of which mean a lot to me & my family. I have never run a marathon before but with all your help and encouragement I will be looking forward to every step. Thank you T

Loversall WI 95th Anniversary Loversall (or as it was then Loversal) Women's Institute was formed in May 1919 with a membership of 55. At 95 years old we are the oldest WI within the South Yorkshire Federation. The world was a very different place in 1919, particularly for women. In 1919 only women aged 30 with property qualifications or as graduates could vote. Our archive of minutes informs us that in the early years light for evening meetings, held in our hut, was provided by oil lamps; large pot bellied coke/coal stoves were used for heating and water for the essential cups of tea was brought into the meeting hut using buckets, the water would then be heated in a large kettle on top of a stove. Some talks were illustrated by magic lantern slides and on occasion entertainment was a picture show shown by Pathescope. Communication between the committee and members, some members lived in Wadworth or Balby, was by postcard or letter. The wooden floor of the meeting hut was cleaned by broom and scrubbing brush – a fairly common request presented at committee meetings was for a new broom. Over the years many changes have taken place including in 1928 all women received the right to vote on the same terms as men at the age of 21. In 1933 electricity came to Loversall, this prompted a discussion in a committee meeting resulting in agreeing that 4 light bulbs would be sufficient to light up the meeting hut. The old oil lamps were donated to the scrap metal drive during World War 2. A piped water supply was developed in the village. Many of our talks today are illustrated using up to date computer technology. Communication is increasingly undertaken by email. Thankfully it has been many years since we needed new brooms and scrubbing brushes, a carpeted hut is soon cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. Today the 55 founding members would maybe not recognise their old hut but they would definitely find that the enthusiasm they had at the beginning for education, friendship and fun has remained undimmed and is as strong today as it was in 1919. Happy Birthday Loversall Jane Hoggart T

A special mention goes to Glenys Birch, Liz Birch and their husbands who spearheaded and co-ordinated the effort which was crowned with an award of Highly Commended. Our June meeting on Tuesday 10th June will be a talk by Martin Wileman of the Salvation Army, who will talk about their work in Doncaster. On Saturday 14th June will be the Church Garden Party. We will be repeating our effort with a paper stall which proved to be such a success last year. Northgate Pre-School and Toddlers Vintage Cafe at the Scarecrow Festival We were delighted to welcome so many of you to our 50-s themed Vintage Cafe during the Scarecrow Festival. The Methodist Church Lounge was beautifully decorated with bunting and an eclectic mix of modern and vintage crockery, and customers poured in to sample the atmosphere, the tea and of course the homemade cakes. Our sincere thanks to all parents and supporters who baked and donated cakes, scones and other goodies to sell; they were delicious! For the younger customers there were a variety of Easter-themed crafts to get involved in, including decorating eggs, designing Easter bags, and making Easter bonnets. Margaret Cannings-Clough kindly agreed to judge the Easter bonnet competition and had the difficult job of deciding between the many excellent entries. Congratulations to Jessica Robinson, Nichole Lindsey and Sian Howells-White who all won prizes. We all had a wonderful afternoon and raised over £200 for the Northgate charity. Many thanks to the Northgate staff and to everyone who helped out on the day or came in to support us. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! Northgate Pre-School and Toddlers committee and staff. We have some good news if you have been waiting for a space in one of our fun and exciting ‘dancefit' classes that we currently hold at St Nicolas Parish Church Hall, Church Walk, Bawtry, Wednesday 9.00am - Dancefit with Toning Friday 9.30am - Dancefit Dancefit is a mix of all the best from Zumba, FitSteps, and Aerobics (with a small dash of Hip Hop thrown in). A class designed to increase cardiovascular fitness and help firm up the legs and waist in particular. Along with a sensible well-balanced diet, you can expect to lose excess pounds as well as see improvements in overall fitness, memory, co-ordination, balance and and increase in your range of movement in the muscles and joints. Dancefit with Toning is a class with an emphasis on low impact options demonstrated clearly and carefully by our low impact demonstrators. It is a perfect class for those new to Dance Fitness, though you can attend this class if you would like high impact work as both will be offered.
This class is focused on increasing lung and heart capacity as well as increasing flexibility and range of movement. It also helps increase balance and dexterity, to increase reaction times, and build strength needed for everyday activities as well as helping to prevent arthritis and easing pain in joints and spine in particular. Overall fitness will be improved as well as improved sleep pattern and total and abdominal body fat decreases. Attendance also decreases the likelihood of heart disease, osteoporosis and diabetes in later life as well as correcting postural defects such as low back pain and rounded shoulders. This class aimed at keeping you moving with a lighthearted approach as you're having fun and a bit of a sing along and can counteract the effects of depression. We add some mat work to this class too. Often using gravity is a very powerful way to add weight which the body pushes against to build strength and flexibility. There are alternatives offered so all levels are welcome. We listen to feedback and put in exercises at the request of the class members so don't hesitate to put your requests in. You'll stretch and relax safely after all this hard work. What do you need to bring with you? • A water bottle (preferably with a sports top) • Shoes without a heavy tread (Try Jazz Shoes or Dance Sneakers which have a "turning spot" on the sole) • A small sweat towel or toweling arm band • Your best smile and your sense of fun! For Dancefit with Toning you will also need: • A set of light hand weights or Toning Sticks (up to 3lb in each hand). Advice regarding type of hand weights will be given in lesson 1 if you don’t already have them). Toning Sticks and Weights are sometimes available to buy from us but there is no pressure to buy them. Our classes are all about having fun whilst getting fit and you can do as little or as much as you wish. If you are interested in joining either of these classes, please do not hesitate to contact us at moveandinspireme@icoud. com, or call Deborah on 07788262783. If this date and time are not convenient, please check our website for alternative classes. www.moveandinspireme. me.uk

Finding a forever home
We are taking care of about 13 puppies at the moment various breeds and sizes and as all puppies are beautiful. I have fallen in love with a little one called Cher who was borne at the sanctuary along with her brother Sonny. They are both adorable and if my lifestyle was different I would be taking her home to join my 2 grown up girls and 3 cats. However I know there will be someone out there with more time on their hands to dedicate to all of our puppies including Cher. So if you have the time and energy to cope with a puppy please come and see us. Likewise we have some lovely dogs and cats waiting for their chance to shine with owners that can give these animals a second chance. Including Susie who is a little Jack Russell with 3 legs. She is very loving and is just getting used to her disability .
June and our Black tie Ball at Mount Pleasant on 20 June. Also don’t forget the annual Scrufts dog show on the 6th July at Tithes Lane in Tickhill If you would like more information about any fund raising events please call us.

Thank You! Potter Along With me would like to say a great big thank you to all those lovely people who attended our event and those who supported us by displaying our posters and flyers in local businesses, and various local websites and newspapers that included us. We had a fab day, met some great people and were impressed by your creativity. We hope you had a great time! Please look out for our upcoming events. Look out for your photos on our facebook page. An extra special Thank You goes out to Janice Birkinshaw, caretaker of the Parish Room, who couldn`t do enough for us, to Paula and the Tickhill Today Team for allowing us an editorial to promote our first event, and to Susan Andrews (my mum!) for keeping everyone in drinks and biscuits all day!! TICKHILL & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB Summer events. The season started on Sunday 4th May with the Wadworth Gala where we ran a coconut shy. Very enjoyable, but over all too quickly - perhaps competitors were allowed to throw too close to the targets or their aim was just too good! We will need a full turn-out of Lions on Saturday 7th June when we will attend the Bawtry Sports Day and Gala as well as being closely involved with The Big Lunch in Tickhill. On the first Saturday of July it will, as usual, be the Tickhill Scout and Guide Association Gala where once again our strawberries will be excellent value.
Senior Citizens. By the end of July we will have supported coach trip days out for a variety of groups in Harworth, Rossington, Wadworth and Tickhill. T 44

Our April speaker Don Whitton provided another good crowd with a lot to think about linking the four parts of his theme and a lot of people had pleasure listening to his passion for plants, especially for the euphorbia in the National Collection which he maintains on a large allotment in Harthill, Sheffield. For those of you who are quick to read your Tickhill Today the June edition should be delivered a few days before our May meeting on 29th when Gail Summerfield from Winterton, Lincs will have 'The Twilight Garden' as her theme. There will be plants for sale and a 'Bring and Buy' table. The June meeting on 26th will see the return of Linda Hinchcliffe and her husband Brian, who we know from previous experience, will give us a lot of information and a few laughs. Coming from Scholes, Holmfirth they are handily placed for their theme 'Fuchsias from the Summer Wine Country' and will be bringing a range of plants for sake. A very popular British Fuchsia Society speaker team, Linda and Brian will provide another good evening. Meetings held in the Methodist Church Schoolroom starting at 7.15pm. Visitors welcome (£3). How low can you grow? Mention the word ‘alpine’ to a garden designer and (in general) you’ll be given the same facial expression as a child who’s just bitten into an unwaxed lemon! Insignificant leaf growth with tiny flowers … what’s to love? Associated with badly designed 60’s rockeries, these low growing perennials really do get a raw deal. In the main, the poor little things can’t climb very far, can’t extend their roots to escape from water logged soil, and have not adapted to elongating their stems to reach the sunlight (because a naughty gardener planted the potbought specimen under the shade of a tree). Alpines, like other successful species, have adapted themselves to their native habitats, often found clung to the side of a windy rock face way above sea level. When you observe them in the wild, you easily understand why they are so small. The exposed sites would quickly dry out large leaves, so many are small in size such as those of Hypericum olympicum, and others often silver in colour such as the very cute Artemisia schmidtiana ‘Nana’. Rather a mouthful to say and often not the most romantic sounding names either, take Pulsatilla vulgaris (the 46
TICKHILL TODAY
pasque flower) as an example. It might not win any prizes in the largest plant competition, but its ability to grow on nearly solid limestone rock is pretty impressive. So too are its beautiful flowers, delicate dissected foliage and crazy seed heads. Until I saw a glasshouse full of alpine plants all in bloom at the same time I wasn’t a huge fan either, but seeing them up close and personal when displayed at waist height, you realise how wonderful these tiny creations are. Over recent years, alpines have really been appreciated for their versatility and employed in new applications. Take the humble Sempervivum ‘Othello’, famous for thriving on hot dry tiled roofs and now widely used on green roof schemes where it can adapt to the very shallow free draining soils. It’s quite a vigorous semp., with beautiful red tints in winter. Grow in shallow containers in full sun where it will quickly spread to around 30cm in width. If you are looking for a plant to cover an old dry stonewall or soften the corner of a raised bed, look no further than Campanula poscharskyana ‘Stella’. If happy, it does have a
tendency to walk, but with its long flowering season and pretty purple flowers I’m sure your neighbours won’t mind if it starts appearing in their crevices too.
Until next time, happy gardening ,
Lee .

Tickhill & District Footpath Group The Tickhill and District Footpath Group has recently funded the construction of two new ‘kissing’ gates for Castle Fields. The first gate has replaced a similar style gate at the Mill Dam end of Castle Fields and the second gate has replaced a stile at the Water Lane end. The gates have been put in place by members of the Doncaster Ramblers Group. The Tickhill and District Footpath Group is very grateful to the Ramblers for their hard work in completing this task. The new gates will be of great benefit to everyone who walks across the Castle Fields

TICKHILL PARISH ROOM Has summer arrived - more like April showers today - but at least the sun is shining in between torrential rain!!. The Parish Room continues with a variety of entertainment in the form of classes, leisure activities and a new one on us - pottery painting! Michelle and Griselle opened up on the 5th May with a couple of sessions of 'Paint your own Pottery'. Tickhill was 'flooded' with their leaflets and information. On one particular week-end I bumped into them several times! The day was a huge success and another day is planned for the afternoon of Saturday 31st May. Items you could paint range from cat and dog figurines to plant pots, mugs, tiles and piggy banks, with many others to chose from. To book your place contact Michelle on 07803360885 or email on potteralongwithme@gmail.com. Our regular classes include Yoga on a Tuesday evening, WI meet on the first Wednesday afternoon of the month and Francophiles on the evening of the first Wednesday of the month. Hartbeeps with Natalie continues to entertain small children in a lovely musical way on a Thursday morning and Slimming World on a Thursday evening. Our regular Saturday Coffee Mornings are every week between 10 a.m. and 12 noon. For information on any of our classes or events please contact me, Janice Birkinshaw, on 07840 419 763. Breakthrough Breast Cancer held a very successful coffee morning early in May - raising £442.45! This was from the coffee morning plus a couple of donations. Many thanks to all who subscribed to this worthy cause. On Friday 27th June Julie Russum 'and friends' are are organising an Afternoon Tea in aid of the Daniel Bagshaw Memorial Trust (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome). Tickets will be £10 and £12, with a glass of fizz. Tables can be booked from Julie Russum on 07817 873015. Our lovely listed building is available for you to book for almost any event and any occasion! Ring me on 07840 419763 for details.

Tickhill TARA Tickhill Tenants and Residents had a really successful day whilst taking part in the activities of the local Scarecrow day. Jacket potatoes and cream teas all freshly made were served in the Communal Hall on Castle Close. There was also a tombola stall and raffle in aid of the Air Ambulance Yorkshire. Most of us know of someone who has at some time needed this extra special service. The amount raised was £500. This was given a fantastic boost by a donation from Mr and Mrs Teale from Maltby who kindly gave a wonderful £200. This gave us £700 which was officially handed over to Mark the fundraiser for the air ambulance. A special thank you to all the ladies who catered in the centre, it was a long day but they tirelessly carried on. Also thank you to all the ladies who sat outside selling the tombola and raffle tickets. Sadly our WW1 soldier did not achieve a prize but better luck next year! A reminder to all, that the centre is a hive of activity with something going on every day. There is bingo Sunday and Monday and for anyone that enjoys gardening we have an allotment with raised beds and grow lots of good veggies. The chair based exercise class is on a Wednesday at 1pm followed by Physio1mpact clinic and community visits with our qualified physiotherapist Nicola Seeley. If you need any information please feel free to contact Pat Hall on 07988 326419 and I will advise you as best I can. T

TJ’s is open for Business! Crowds turned out on 10th May for the official opening of TJ’s the new tuck shop at Tickhill Juniors ground on the outskirts of Tickhill. The donation of a portacabin and the tireless work of a few individuals, teamed with lots of community support has produced an excellent facility that will allow Tickhill Juniors to provide hot and cold drinks and snacks to home and away supporters at their matches each weekend. Thanks and congratulations to everyone involved – but in particular Jane Macdonald. T
Wonderful Wadworth Terrific Trim Trail This Easter holidays phase 2 and 3 of the trim trail was set up ready for everyone to enjoy during the summer term. Everyone was very eager to have a turn to try out all the different activities.
What do people think about the Trim Trail?
Fitness and health benefits The Trim Trail is about getting active and keeping fit – but in a fun way. The pupils can improve their balance by using the beams, tyres and stepping stones. Our upper body strength is increased when we go on the climbing wall because of when you have to hold on to the holes. Your agility also develops every time you go round because you get the hang of it and speed up after a while. 52

We asked Oliver and Lacey-May in KS1, “What is your favourite part of the trim trail?” They both answered “the tunnel!” The second question we asked was “Does having the next phases of the trim trail make break times better and why?” Both Oliver and Lacey responded with “Yes because there is more to do”. We asked Alexis “What part of the trim trail gets you the most fit and why?” She said “the climbing wall because when you’re moving you have to hold and pull your body weight.” We also interviewed Zak and Alison in KS2 and asked them about the fitness benefits they said “The trim trail keeps you fit and there is more to do at break time”.

Wadworth Gala We welcomed well over 1,000 people to our Wadworth Gala and Fun Day on Sunday, 4th May. Although there was a cool breeze at least it stayed dry. We would like to thank everyone who was involved with this event and also those who came to support us on the day. Also a huge THANK YOU to the many volunteers who gave up so much time beforehand and on the day to make it all possible. We look forward to seeing you all again next year!
Litter pickers Not many people know that we have two regular volunteer litter pickers in Wadworth - Peter Oliver and Roger Cousins. Their "patch" includes Tofield Road, White Cross Lane, part of Springwell Lane and the A60 as far as Loversall, as well as Wadworth itself. We would like to say how very grateful we are to these two for all their hard work and for all that they do for the village in many other ways. There are also one or two other individuals who pick up oddments on their walks and we would like to thank these too. It's a pity these good-hearted volunteers have to collect other people's rubbish due to thoughtless and selfish actions. T 54

At the presentation held at Tickhill Parish Room, Mr Burkill was also presented with a UK Merchant Seafarers Veteran’s Badge by Capt. Malcolm F Mathison (The Merchant Navy Association Vice Chairman) and Tim Brant (National Secretary). Congratulations were also given by Caroline Flint MP, Ray Hill (Mayor of Tickhill), Rev’d John Sweed and Lt. Col. Gordon Whitehead (US Army) Rtd. This was witnessed by his wife Margaret, family and friends. Although in a reserved occupation Albert was eager to play his part during WWII and joined the Merchant Navy, serving for approximately 3 years as an Engineer Officer on board tankers. Sailings included carrying aviation fuel from New York. Such transatlantic crossings which were carrying valuable supplies from America and the colonies to Britain were fraught with danger as German U boats attacked the convoys. High points of his time in New York included seeing Frank Sinatra, and the Ink Spots at the Stork Club. Also boxer Bruce Woodcock at Madison Square Garden. After the war he worked for many years with British Rail Engineering in Doncaster. He was a Champion Speed Skater and Captain at Town Moor Golf Club.

In July...in addition to our normal meeting...we are arranging an outing to Sledmere House on Thursday July 17th. This will cost £20 and this includes the coach fare and admission to the House and gardens. Friends will be welcome to join us. Marcia J Lingard [ Secretary ] T

At our meeting on April 17th George Buchanan gave a fascinating talk about “Growing up in Hodsock Priory”, his family’s stately home not far from Blyth famous for its snowdrop displays in February each year. His Mother had the idea of opening the gardens to the public at snowdrop time each year as a means of improving the family finances; ten years ago his wife proposed using the house and grounds as a wedding venue for the same reason. Despite these public intrusions George described how both parents had ensured their children

The Society’s new book “Tickhill – discover its past” will be launched at our meeting in September. This will be a very busy evening and it would help to streamline the event if members would purchase copies and renew memberships before the launch evening. Please bring your picnics, Gazebos, blankets and families and have a free day out. There will be no food served. Please bring your own. I have great hopes for this event and would like all of you to attend who possibly can. The event has been centred on the Eden Project and will bring the community together. We hope it will help to combat loneliness and give everyone the opportunity to show case their group. Fortunately, we have been able to secure some funding that will provide us with just a little more than we had expected. There will be the Punch and Judy man, A brass band, welly wanging, and a bouncy castle for the under 5’s. There will be a tennis and bowls tournament for those who wish to take part and Les Francophiles of Tickhill will be having a Boules tournament. There will be children’s races too. The music licences are in place so we can go ahead with Zumba dancing and fortunately we have been able to receive funding for a PA system too which can be used for future events. on and they are actively seeking a replacement for the role. Anyone interested should contact the Northgate Pre-School directly. Also can I ask you all to start thinking about nominations for the Young Person of the Year Award and the Community Award please? We are already half way through the year. I have also been able to secure the Diversionary Activities for two afternoons per week during the summer hols. Volunteers from Mums and Dads to make and drink tea and coffee please. Donations for tea/ squash fund always welcome. On two more serious matters. We still have a problem with irresponsible dog owners/ walkers not clearing up after pets. Last month our VOLUNTEER litter picker cleared up 57 dollops of foul just from Common Lane. It really isn’t very nice. Please clear it up. Also parking is a problem. If you have a drive please use it and do not park on the pavements, they are for pedestrians. On a good note to close, I would like to welcome Andrea to the team to look after the Pavilion. SING A celebration of young voices. Thank you to everyone who helped to make the choir concert held in St Marys Church just before Easter a success. The choirs and soloists all sang beautiful, and the appreciative audience enjoyed a fantastic concert. Every child taking part did themselves and their schools proud. There have been many, many requests for a repeat performance and I very much hope to make it an annual event. Not only was it a memorable evening but a great fundraiser too and a cheque for £750 has been sent to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. A donation of £125 has also been made to St Marys Church in appreciation of the fantastic venue for this community event. Thank you to the choirs of Sir Thomas Wharton Community College, Tickhill Estfeld and Tickhill St Marys and to all those who support them. T

Vest and Pants Tickhill’s favourite band ‘Vest and Pants’ played a sell-out gig at the Millstone on Saturday night in aid of local charity ‘CureSam.com’. Event organiser Gareth Rowbotham spoke after the event: “We are overwhelmed by the support we’ve had from everyone concerned. Not only from Dave, Maria and Hywel in the band, but also from all the sponsors in Tickhill who’ve generously donated prizes for our prize draw.” The star prize of a ‘Romantic escape for two’ was donated by Mick Jackson & Co., and other prizes were donated, by among, others Zara’s, Move & Inspire Me, Taylors of Tickhill and Fentons butchers. Gareth continued “The evening raised over £1650 for charity, to be split between The Big I Foundation (a charity supporting education in poorer parts of the world) and JDRF, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which is trying to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. We’d like to say thank you to Vest and Pants, all our sponsors and of course everyone who came along!” T
