This month we celebrate Today Publications 13th birthday! Tickhill Today was the first magazine and during the first week of March 2005, we delivered the first issue to homes across Tickhill and nervously awaited a reaction. Thirteen may be considered unlucky by some, but I feel very lucky to have enjoyed the last 13 years continuing to distribute magazines each month in Tickhill, and then adding Rossington in 2006, Bawtry in 2007, Harworth & Bircotes in 2011, Bessacarr & Cantley in 2013 and most recently DN2. Long may they all continue. A magazine for the expanding Plantation area of Balby is in the pipeline for 2018, so watch this space, or get in touch if you think you would like to be in that magazine! As always, if you contact someone advertising within these pages, do tell them where you found them. Whether that be a business advertising products or services, or a group, charity or organisation promoting their meetings, activities or events. Without the advertisers and community contributors these magazines would not exist, and would not be helping our local communities to thrive. Your new Vicar! My name is Ali Earl and in April I shall be the new Vicar of Tickhill and Stainton. My husband Andy - who is a Padre in the Army working out of Preston at present – and I are really looking forward to moving to Tickhill and in a way, for me personally, it’s like coming home. Why? - I hear you ask. Well I was born and brought up in Maltby and have fond memories as a child of coming to the Military Tattoo at Tickhill Castle with my mum and dad, feeding the ducks and shopping in Taylors. My mum was also MD for Tickhill Male Voice Choir and whilst I did my curacy in Rossington I would often pop down this way. I’ve had a varied career since attending Maltby Comprehensive School where I was heavily involved with the stage productions that they used to put on and it’s been lovely to meet up with my old form teacher Mrs Millard (whose husband Stuart is one of the Churchwardens here) who was also in these productions with me.

We recently purchased a tiny cottage in France in the Limousin and in the precious time we do have together – army life being as demanding as parish ministry – we spend time relaxing in the quiet restful surroundings of rural France. Andy likes to potter, and he is DOVR WKH &KDLUPDQ RI (OVHFDU +HULWDJH 5DLOZD\ DQG D TXDOLȴHG VWHDP HQJLQH driver. I like to paint, read and do yoga. We are both looking forward to moving to Tickhill and to making our home and new friends here. T

Coincidentally the reception after my ordination was actually held at The Three Tons in Stainton, as was our granddaughters FKULVWHQLQJ UHFHSWLRQ \HDUV DJR Ζ EHFDPH WKH 9LFDU RI WKH EHQHČ´FH RI +RO\ Trinity Elsecar and St Marys Worsbrough LQ DQG KDYH EHHQ 3ROLFH &KDSODLQ for South Yorkshire Police throughout my ordained ministry and continue to be so. $QG\ DQG Ζ KDYH GDXJKWHUV (PPD and Abigail and we were married at the 0LOLWDU\ &KDSHO DW +HUHIRUG ZKHUH KH ZDV stationed at that time as Army Chaplain. We both enjoy time spent with family – our granddaughter Amelia is such a blessing, as is time spent with friends from far and wide- many of whom will be travelling up 6

Appreciate your Bathroom Our bathrooms are one of the busiest rooms used in the home. Whether this is for showering, bathing or pampering, our bathrooms can often become tired due to the amount of use they get on a daily basis. With a small amount of time and effort you will be able to appreciate your bathroom just that little bit more and put some love back into the room. Imagine entering your bathroom to see neatly folded towels on the hand rail, clean and clear surfaces with just a few of your beauty products by the sink. Candles on the windowsill and essential oils by the bathtub awaiting your next soak in the tub. If this image is far from the reality of how your bathroom currently looks perhaps it’s time to have a fresh start! To appreciate your bathroom more, you need to start with the décor. It is no good if your bathroom appears dull and lifeless with tiles that have seen better days, peeling paint and sealant, and limescale build up clouding the shower door. Start with a deep clean, there are lots of products now that can help with discoloured grout and limescale build up if these are issues in your bathroom.

St Mary’s School Aliens at St Mary’s Foundation have celebrated their Space topic with an Alien day in school. All the children and adults dressed up as aliens and we had an alien picnic! We also had a visit from a planetarium so we could see space on a large scale! Our Nursery and Reception classes thoroughly enjoyed taking part. Joseph made a cake with his mummy for the special day.

NEWS FROM THE EAST NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICE INSPECTOR Dear Readers, I begin this month’s article with a brief update on crime in and around Tickhill. In general, the news is good with less than twenty crimes reported in Tickhill EHWZHHQ -DQXDU\ DQG )HEUXDU\ :LWKLQ WKLV Č´JXUH ZH VDZ WKUHH EXUJODULHV RI garages and one attack on a house where the car keys were stolen and the vehicle taken. This type of incident has been on the increase over the past few months across Doncaster with people owning prestige/sports cars have EHHQ WDUJHWHG 7KH RÎ?HQGHUV KDYH EURNHQ LQWR properties to steal the car keys and take the car. Very often, we keep our car and house keys on the same key ring and lock our house doors at night but leave the keys either in the door, or very close by in clear view. This makes it easier IRU WKH RÎ?HQGHU WR ORFDWH WKH NH\V RQFH WKH\ break in. My advice is hide your keys. You may recall in my last article, I also mentioned some crime prevention methods you could consider taking to protect your shed. We tootled off to Nottingham to catch the Viking exhibition ‘Rediscover The Legend’ at the Djanogly Gallery before it closes on 4 March – (you just have time yourselves) and have to say that this show which is a ‘major show’, on tour from the British Museum and York Museums Trust was very underwhelming. I’d met a few people who had seen it and said how good it was, we shouldn’t miss it, etc. There just seemed to be not very many exhibits and rather a lot of display stands. It was a room full of screens, and to be honest the work was OK. We weren’t looking at superb craftsmanship, it was fairly straightforward silver-smithing, and why should a Viking metal worker not be able to do that? There was one very fine iron helmet and lots of coins. No one makes anything anymore, we don’t cook, we don’t sew, we don’t make our own jewellery, but it is not enough to put a few twists of silver bar in a case and call it a ‘major show’. I hope if you went you were more thrilled than me. However, their next show which is a contemporary landscape exhibition looks interesting. If you are new to exercise or had a break and starting back, there is nothing worse than being too sore for days on end as you have overdone it on your first session, or worse picked up an injury. Start small and build up. Feel that you have no time for exercise? The No. 1 time waster now is social media, think how much exercise you could do when you put your phone down! Make sure you look after the other bits that relate to exercise such as relaxation, sleep, hydration and good nutrition. It is surprising how these factors can either motivate or de-motivate you. Don’t be too rigid in your plans, make room for adjustments along the way and accept that this is pretty normal for a new exercise routine. Take a day off if tired and seek help early with any niggles.

Hi Everyone, It feels like winter is still with us, but today has been sunny so there’s a hope of spring around the corner. We have been so busy here which is great as it means more dogs and cats are rehomed making more room for others to come in and hopefully the list of waiting dogs and cats will get a little smaller. We have been doing lots of fund raising over the last few weeks. Marks and Spencer have been of particular support to us in 2017/2018. We will be outside their Wheatley Hall Rd store over most of March with some of our dogs, so please come along and say hello. The M&S team will also be coming to the Sanctuary to take part in a Charity day, dog walking and looking at those odd jobs that we always struggle to get around to doing. They are an amazing team and we will always be grateful for their support. Race night with a Pie and Pea supper will be held in Misson Community Hall on the 24th Feb, the last one was such fun so we hope this one raises lots of money for us. A May Ball will be held at The Crown Hotel Bawtry on the Friday the 18th of May. This event promises to be a fantastic evening a drink on arrival 3 course meal, disco, raffle and auction. There will also be a photographer to capture that special moment. The Sunshine Vitamin Vitamin D supplements can be found in most pharmacies, supermarkets or health food shops. Some groups of people are likely to have lower levels of Vitamin D in their bodies or they require a greater amount. These include pregnant or breastfeeding women, breastfed babies, adults over the age of 65 years or those that spend very little time outside. As Dietitians we often talk about a healthy balanced diet and that if you eat a healthy diet there should be no need for a supplement. Vitamin D is the exception to the rule. A supplement is important to keep your bones, muscles and teeth healthy and prevent nasty diseases such as Rickets in children and Osteomalacia in adults.

It’s March and the start of Spring, but did you know that it is actually March when your Vitamin D levels are likely to be at their lowest? We all make Vitamin D from sunlight, it really is the Sunshine Vitamin! Sadly, here in South Yorkshire, from September to April the sun isn’t strong enough for us to make Vitamin D for ourselves. We manage to keep a small store of Vitamin D but this gets used up during those dark autumn and winter months and we rely on our food to meet our needs. There are some foods which we eat WKDW QDWXUDOO\ FRQWDLQ 9LWDPLQ ' H J RLO\ ¿ VK HJJ yolk, meat, offal and milk. And other foods which DUH IRUWL¿ HG ZLWK 9LWDPLQ ' H J PDUJDULQH VRPH breakfast cereals, infant formula milk and some \RJKXUWV %XW LQ UHDOLW\ LW LV DFWXDOO\ YHU\ GLI¿ FXOW WR get enough Vitamin D from food alone.

Fertile Ground This month the days get longer and the sun gets stronger...we hope! However, March is famously temperamental and if the soil where you are is still wet and cold then it’s wise to delay planting and sowing until the temperature rises.

Potassium makes grass hardier, promotes germination and improves vegetable and fruit yields. The proportions of each macro-nutrient will be printed on the packet. Equal amounts of each nutrient make for a good general-purpose fertiliser.

Plant nutrient reserves are low at this time of year so, as the soil warms up, it’s time to think about fertiliser.

A lawn will need a good balance of nitrogen and phosphorus to guarantee lush green grass with a healthy root system capable of withstanding dry spells. Fruiting plants need higher proportions of potassium.

Many gardeners are a bit frightened of fertiliser. All those chemical symbols on the side of the packet are rather reminiscent of school chemistry lessons. In fact, the basics are quite simple.

There are other macro-nutrients: Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen, which plants obtain freely from the air and water; and calcium, magnesium and sulphur, which should be present in any good general-purpose fertiliser.

NPK - This can be observed on the side of most fertiliser packages. The letters stand for:

Plants also need micro-nutrients: Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Boron and Molybdenum.

N - Nitrogen

Plants take all these nutrients and build everything they need from scratch, including vitamins. What plants cannot do is absorb vitamins directly from things such as pet food, milk or so-called fertilisers which contain vitamins, proteins and fats.

P - Phosphorous K - Potassium Together these are known as the macronutrients and each of them has its own use. Nitrogen primarily feeds the leafy above-theground parts of the plants.

So, don’t be intimidated by fertiliser. Decide what your plants need then read the label. It’s easy as ABC..or rather NPK!

The first meeting of 2018 was one of the most emotional talks we have ever had. Tim Mulroy from Rotherham kept us spellbound with his story of how Nicholas Winton organised the transporting and rehoming of six hundred and sixty nine mainly Jewish children from Nazi occupation just before the outbreak of World War Two, this became known as Czech Kinder Transport. To achieve this he raised funds, forged passports, got the British Government on side and arranged the children’s journeys from Czechoslovakia, where they left their families and travelled by train to the Hook of Holland and across to Britain, unable to speak a word of English. 66 TICKHILL TODAY

After the war his efforts were recognised with a knighthood and a surprise appearance on Esther Rantzen’s ‘That’s Life’ where he met many of the children whose lives he had saved, now adults in their 60s. Sir Nicholas lived to be 106 years old, a good innings for a wonderful man. The March meeting on Thursday 15th, sees a return of Janet Stain one of our funniest speakers, who will give a talk on ‘Ration Book Fashion.’

Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - March 2018

Tickhill Town Council regrets to announce the forthcoming retirement of their present Clerk. After some seven years of exemplary service to our Community Margaret CanningsClough has decided to stand down as Clerk and will have a phased retirement period from May to November 2018. However, thereafter she will be staying on as the Responsible Financial Officer on very much reduced hours. By doing this Margaret will be able to offer support and cover for the newly appointed Clerk, for example, at holiday and sickness times. The position of Clerk Designate has been published in the magazine this month. Application forms and a job description are available from the retiring Clerk. Meanwhile if you wish to make bookings for the pavilion/ tennis please contact either the Clerk on 07591175630 or Andrea on 07851269686. March sees the end of the financial year, with newly appointed external auditors PKF Littlejohn, the Clerk having attended a webinar to be introduced to them. The format is very much the same as previous years, just a little more detailed. This time of year, is always busy for the Clerk so please be a little patient if the phone is not picked up immediately or e-mails answered quickly. Residents are requested to also make complaints about for example pavements and road surfaces to DMBC directly by telephoning 736000 or by emailing DMBC: customer.services@doncaster.gov. uk or by using the mydoncaster app either on online or by using 70 TICKHILL TODAY

your smart phone. This should be the first point of contact. If this is not successful then please contact Tickhill Town Council by e mailing tickhillcouncil@gmail.com or sending a letter to the Clerk who will pass on your complaint. Contact details are at the side of this article. If Tickhill Town Council too has no satisfactory response, the next step is to take this to your Ward Councillor. Mentions of spring seem a little premature at the time of writing this newsletter – but everyone lives in hope! Nevertheless, the initial signs are evident in the flower beds and lawns and once again Tickhill Council will be supporting the Tickhill in Bloom group to provide their superb displays on the roadside approaches into the town and at the Buttercross. Orders have been placed for this year’s summer plants which will be planted out at the end of May. Before then Tickhill should reap the full benefit from the beds of winter plants. Thanks go to all the volunteers who raise money to purchase the plants; then plant them out and maintain the beds throughout the year. Could residents please make sure that hedges are cut back before the onset of the nesting season
