This month Today Publications celebrates its 14th birthday! Yes, it is 14 years since the first issue of Tickhill Today was delivered. I thank everyone who has supported any of the 6 publications that we now have during those 14 years. From the contributors who regularly provide details of their group’s events and meetings, to the distributors who get the magazines out to local homes and of course the advertisers without whom there could be no magazine. Thank you also to all our readers particularly those who use the local businesses, services, clubs and societies promoted within our pages. I never cease to be amazed at how important community magazines are, and the number of people who tell me how useful they find them. They play a part in linking people together; helping businesses to grow; and providing people with some traditional print media to enjoy with a cup of tea!

Next month I will be adding our 7th magazine to those published. This time a publication for the residents of Woodfield Plantation, Carr Lodge and Alverley. If you would like to be in this magazine then please let me know. I hope that you will continue to enjoy YOUR community magazine for many years to come. The April issue will be delivered to you late March. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 15th March. Don’t forget to let me have details of anything happening over Easter for that issue. Enjoy March and I will be back in a months’ time with your April magazine.
Best wishes,

RSPCA bags £3,500 from Tesco
RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch is delighted to announce it has bagged £3,500 from Tesco’s Bags of Help community grant scheme, to upgrade their rabbit unit flooring. RSPCA Branch Chief Executive Mary McSherry said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this generous grant by the Tesco Bags of Help community scheme. Upgrading the flooring means that the rabbits now have access to a fantastic area in which to hop, skip and jump. In addition, the staff and volunteers can spend more quality time with the animals, so it’s good news all round. The grant supports the vital work we do to rehabilitate and re-home the animals in our care.”
A Doncaster Charity for Doncaster People

Voting ran in stores throughout November and December 2018 with customers choosing which local project they would like to receive the top award using a token given to them at the checkout. Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, and sees grants awarded to thousands of local community projects every year. Since launching in 2015, it has provided more than £67 million to over 21,000 good causes. To mark Tesco’s 100th year, they have announced two special voting rounds, Tesco Bags of Help Centenary Grants, in summer and winter 2019 with larger grants over wider geographic regions. You can help the RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch including volunteering, donating cash or goods, sponsoring us through our Safe Haven programme and attending our events. LES FRANCOPHILES DE TICKHILL
On Wednesday 6th March we shall welcome Catherine Greensmith, who will talk in English about "The French Impressionists in London". Many of them were forced to flee from Paris at the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870: we shall see how London benefited from their exile. Catherine, a French national and lecturer at Hull University, speaks for the Alliance Française in our area. Then on Wednesday 3rd April we shall be entertained by the Yorkshire plantswoman, Sarah Hopps, who will give an illustrated talk on " The Gardens of France". Sarah will also set up a stall of her own Spring produce, so come prepared to purchase plants. We meet at the Parish Room, Tickhill, DN11 9HZ at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome at a charge of £3. Refreshments are provided. For further details contact Jan Murray, 07463 007789

THE ARTS SOCIETY DUKERIES
Our Wednesday 6th March meeting will be a lecture by Neil Faulkner on ‘Lawrence of Arabia: Excavating a Legend’. On the basis of sensational new evidence from archaeological fieldwork, Neil will contrast the legend of Lawrence of Arabia with the true story of what happened in the famous desert war of 1916-1918. Was Lawrence, as some claim, a liar and a charlatan? Or does the legend reflect reality? Neil will offer a new narrative and analysis of the war and a new assessment both of Lawrence’s role and achievements and of the relationship between art and reality in the creation of ‘celebrity’. We meet at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick, S81 9AP. Doors open at 10am for coffee and the lecture is 11am to 12 noon. Visitors are very welcome to come to our meetings at a cost of £6 per lecture. There is a free car park at the Centre. For further details of our lecture programme and about our Society, please speak to Suzanne on 01909 290488 or Gill on 01909 540506 or see our webpage: www.theartssociety.org.uk/ dukeries T

Gambia Appeal Janet Stain, one of the regular Speakers at the Tickhill History Society has been shipping to a village Nyofelleh, in the Gambia, for nearly 4 years, and during this time they have created both a school and a clinic. This is the appeal she made at her last talk to 50 ladies in the Library. The results have been astonishing with everyone finding something they no longer needed. Last year Janet joined two other people who ship for a number of Charities and they paid for a 40ft container which was packed in Great Yarmouth. Leaving mid-November and arriving Banjul Gambia mid -December, it was unloaded on Christmas Eve. The contents were then distributed, medical supplies to Hospitals and clinics, and the rest to schools and villages. They are now collecting for another container to be sent from Sheffield this year, and have free storage with some wonderful businessmen in Rotherham and use of a big van when needed. They require literally everything, from medicines and clothes, pencils and books to pans and old phones. Old sewing machines give a woman a living and old bikes mean an amputee can get to school. If you would like a full list please e-mail dorothy.bradley@btinternet.com, My conservatory in Tickhill has become a collecting point for absolutely anything, and Janet will collect from there.

Tickhill & District Lions Celebrations
Across the globe, Lions are taking action. With over 1.4 million members, we’re the largest service organisation in the world. 2017 was the 100th anniversary year of the formation of the Lions Organisation and in 2018 Lions Clubs celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Lions Clubs International Foundation which was formed to support Lions Clubs worldwide.
Jeannette Fish MBE –
In recognition of these anniversaries all Lions Clubs were given the opportunity to make some special awards to members of their community who have ‘Made a Difference’ within their community.
Jeannette was actively involved in promoting events such as ‘Mile of Coins’, ‘Mile of Scarves’ which are then sold raising money for the charity, the ‘Memory Tree’ and the ‘Mid-Summer Walk’, all designed to raise funding for the DCDT in order to benefit the residents in and around Doncaster.
We have made three awards of a special certificate, signed by our Patron the Countess of Wessex Sophie Rhys-Jones, wife of Prince Edward recognising the individual contribution to their local community and there is a special plaque awarded to one of the nominees.
For the certificates:
Peter Oliver and Roger Cousins Peter has long experience of serving the community as a member of the Wadworth Parish Council. Both Peter and Roger are active ‘litter collectors’ and can be seen regularly collecting within the village and the roads leading in and out of the village. Both are instrumental in providing the village ‘Summer Flower’ displays and the village decorated Christmas tree display, making Wadworth a place to be proud of, by those who live there and all who pass through.
A posthumous award was also made to the family of the late Jennette Fish MBE. Jeannette worked tirelessly as long time secretary of the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust and helped raise funding for the Scanner Appeal, as well as raise funding for the building and equipment of the St. John’s Hospice in Doncaster.
For the plaque: Nigel Cannings
Nigel is our local Independent Councillor for Tickhill as well as a councillor with the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. Nigel is also the Tickhill ‘Snow Warden’ as well as a Tickhill & District Lions Christmas Float supporter. Nigel gives freely of his time year in and year out in all weather conditions as a volunteer ‘litter collector’ in Tickhill helping to make Tickhill the extremely clean and tidy place in which to live and be proud of and enjoyed by all residents and envied by all who pass through the town. Nigel undertakes several other duties including being part of the Pavilion Management Committee and the Advisory Committee of our local council.

Britain’s Seabirds: Threats and Challenges Our March meeting will feature a talk by David Parkin called Britain’s Seabirds: Threats and Challenges. We’re delighted to welcome David back; he’s given us some outstanding bird talks in the past, so don’t miss out. This talk concentrates on the north-east Atlantic Ocean which is home to millions of seabirds; Britain and Ireland play host to some truly magnificent colonies. It describes methods of monitoring these birds and shows how changes in the numbers can sometimes be related to problems in the oceans themselves. David is an accomplished speaker and an enthusiastic ornithologist and natural historian. He helped to found the Department of Genetics at Nottingham University where he became Professor of Avian Genetics and specialised in evolutionary genetics. This meeting will be held in the Rural Learning Centre at the Idle Valley, North Road (A638), Retford DN22 8RQ on March 14 2019. The meeting starts at 7.30pm. Admission £2.50 includes refreshments. THE PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP OF THE TICKHILL AND COLLIERY SURGERY
Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare Good news from the Practice. On the 6th of February Dr Xhemali, who has previously been a registrar at the Practice, started work as a salaried GP. We would also like to extend a warm welcome to Jayne Riley who has joined the Practice as Senior Receptionist/Administrator. Jayne has worked in general practice for the past 22 years. During which time she has been a receptionist, a secretary, a clerical administrator, an assistant manager and her last position was that of site manager. We have been asked to remind Patients that it is still not too late to have a flu jab. At this time of year the Practice see an increasing number of people getting flu. For many of these patients this is not a serious illness and they will usually
recover within a week. However, some people are more at risk of potentially developing conditions such as bronchitis or pneumonia. With this in mind the NHS offers the vaccine free of charge to the following groups : • People 65 and over • Children aged 6 months to 2 years who are at risk of flu • Pregnant women • People with medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma and heart disease • People who receive carer’s allowance or are the main carer for someone who may be at risk if you become ill • People living in a long-stay care home Finally, if you are due to travel abroad and vaccinations are required for the country you are visiting, PLEASE contact the Practice 6 WEEKS BEFORE you are due to go. Recently several patients have come to the surgery only 2 weeks before they are due to travel. This is not sufficient time and puts those people at risk as the vaccinations may not then be effective. Tickhill St Mary’s C of E Primary a NewHi I Beginnings have just been in touch with John who has arranged for me to email over to you details for an advert to be produced for the January edition
FITNESS PITFALLS… January sees a MASSIVE rise in gym membership. By March, most of those people will have given up…with motivational issues, injuries and a lack of results playing a role in that process. So, take a deep breath and restart that fitness resolution... Have a realistic goal We tend to start with a huge goal and simply launch ourselves into it. This increases the risk of injury as our bodies just aren’t ready. Having an ultimate goal is great…but it needs chunking up into smaller more manageable goals, allowing you to adjust both mentally and physically. It may take longer to achieve your goal…but you WILL achieve it!

Rest Give yourself a break. Overtraining not only places excess strain on the body but also becomes stressful mentally…which affects our sleep…which affects the body’s ability to cope… contributes to weight gain…adds further stress and strain to the body… Diet For many people, taking up exercise isn’t just about fi tness – it’s about losing weight too. To avoid the pitfall of seeing poor results, you’re going to HAVE to look at your diet too. Set yourself up for success Laying the foundations on which to build fi tness is vital and most people will benefi t hugely from addressing flexibility and mobility issues before launching themselves into a strength and cardio schedule. Variety You might want to take up running and your goal might be to complete a 10k run but you will reduce the risk of injury and be better able to achieve your goal by exercising in a variety of ways.

Becoming More Self-Aware
Thinking about the last 7 days…
You may have heard phrases such as…
(There are a few examples at the beginning of this article)
What annoyed you? What did you enjoy more than expected? What could you be grateful for? Where did you make a mistake and what can you lesson from that mistake? What action should you have taken but procrastinated on?
“You can’t fix a problem you don’t know exists”
Every day, 5 minutes before you go to bed, write down your answers to them and use these answers to set targets or at least increase awareness in the direction you wish the next 24 hours to take.
If you take only even a couple of minutes to think about your answers to these questions, you may find some interesting and always useful insights. With so much information swimming around our heads, it’s no wonder we rarely take the time to reflect, but we should. Self-awareness is one of the most overlooked, simplest and yet extremely powerful ways to take responsibility for your position in life and create genuine noticeable improvements.
24
“What gets monitored gets done” “You don’t know what you don’t know” …and so on. I believe them all! There are as many connections in 1 cubic cm of your brain as there are stars in the entire Milky Way galaxy…in other words, there’s a lot going on upstairs! Unless you find a way to consciously let your brain know what to look out for (what’s important to you) then it’ll make the choices for you.
It’s a simple exercise but one you’ll feel working after only a short time doing it. As always, go create a day and life that counts & always have more desires than excuses. To Your Success!
So, let’s be smart. Make a list of 5-10 questions you feel will provide you with the best insight and reminders into the areas of your life you wish to improve.

GOLD FOR OWEN
You may have seen me running and cycling around Tickhill no matter what the weather. I decided to take up the sport of duathlon after finishing my 6th world major marathon in Tokyo. I like to set myself regular new challenges and develop skills so I decided to learn to perfect my cycling to compete in the sport of Duathlon (run, bike, run). From day one my ambition has always been to represent my country in sport and then to medal at a major competition. I was honoured to be selected to represent my age group for Great Britain in Soria, Spain after 2 years of taking up the sport and again last year in Ibiza. I went into Ibiza in the best shape and felt confident in delivering the performance of my life. What I wasn’t prepared for was another cyclist crashing into me taking me out of the race leaving me and the bike colliding into a motorcycle. I managed to finish the race a bit battered and bruised and I remember my wife (looking concerned) asking ‘How much damage was there to the bike’? I have experienced many highs and lows from sport but I always need a goal to keep focussed. Last month I competed in the English National Age group championships (run 10k, bike 40k, run 5k). I came first place for my age group vet 40 - 44 taking the gold medal, it has been my best performance to date. Now I set my sights on my first world championships at the end of April in Pontevedra, Spain. Between working and being a father to an amazing 3 year old boy, I manage to train around 10 hours per week to put myself in the best physical shape to be the best that I can be.

Hi Everyone, How lovely to see the snowdrops popping their little heads out and at last we can focus on spring being around the corner. The Sanctuary is full to overflowing, however we have been really busy since Christmas watching dogs and cats go to their forever homes. We are taking care of some beautiful dogs and cats at the moment, so if you are looking for that special pet, young or old please come to see us. Our kennel carers are very knowledgeable and will let you know which dog they feel would be right for you. When someone adopts a dog from us, we ask that they come to our Dog Listener talk on a Saturday morning before taking their chosen dog home. This is especially helpful if you are a first-time dog owner but everyone finds this very helpful, even people that have had dogs all of their life find the talk is very informative. We are holding a table top sale in the Scout Headquarters on St Marys Road in Tickhill on the 6th April. Why not clear the clutter and help our Sanctuary. There will be a 50p entry, also cake, tea
and coffee available. Price for a table will be £12. Please call Janice if you wish to purchase a table on 07590 455340 she will be happy to help. On 17th May we are holding our Mayflower Red Carpet Ball at the Crown Hotel, Bawtry. This will be a grand affair so get out that posh frock and come and have some fun also raise money for a good cause too. Cocktail dress or Ball gown and black tie for the men.
Photo on the red carpet and drink on arrival, 3 course meal, live auction, dancing and disco until late. Why not come and join us, The Crown Hotel will be also doing special rates for overnight stays too. Tickets for the Ball are priced at £50, well worth a fantastic night out with food. Please call me on 07776 783242 to purchase tickets for the Ball. The number to call for the Sanctuary is 01302 711330.

Lifelong Love of Dogs leads to new Tickhill Business Venture I have had dogs all my life, in fact I don’t think I have ever been without one, from the family Labrador Goldie, to Whippets, Staffies, Collies and good old Heinz fifty-seven variety mutts, I have always lived somewhere where there was a waggy tail. I have also had hamsters, rats, lizards and lived in households with various parrots and tropical birds.
I have lived in Tickhill for nearly 50 years, living on Walnut Avenue as a child with my family and now Crown Road. I love Tickhill and I’m glad my parents moved here, it’s a very friendly place. I have recently left my job of 15 years at DHL to set up Tickhill Tails and fulfil a long-time dream of working with animals and having my own business. My service is primarily based around looking after people’s pets when they can’t. Busy working people, those on holiday or people who struggle physically to exercise their pets. I can walk your dog or provide a ‘let out’ service which ever you prefer. I can also see to the needs of any house cats or small furries, fish, reptiles, birds, whatever you have really! Another of my services is house sitting, whereby I can look after your pet(s) in your own home whilst you are away. Most owners don’t like putting their pets in boarding kennels, some pets cope with it, others less so. I’ve never put my dogs in kennels, if we can’t be there for them then at least they can have the reassurance of the smell and feel of a familiar environment, even if their carer is not their owner. I will also water plants, open and close curtains, that sort of thing – so you get your beloved pets and your property looked after. My dog walking rates are: £7.50 for a 30-minute walk with a second household dog costing just another £3.50 A 15 minute ‘let out’ costs £6 with no cost for a second animal. My introductory rates for house sitting at a Tickhill household with one or two pets is £35 per day + night including a couple of walks
for your dog(s) and also the care of any other smaller pets in the house. Out of Tickhill house sits can be arranged and a bespoke price will be set. I have successfully completed a dog walking first aid course and have contacts for pet ambulance and pet taxi services in the area should any emergencies arise and I am insured for all the time I am in charge of your pets and property. I have a pet sitting business diploma from New Skills Academy and have been helped by Aspiring2 business services to set myself up. I am DBS criminal record checked too. I would love to assist you with the care of your pets. To discuss your requirements please feel free to give me a call and I look forward to meeting you and your pets very soon.

Programme of Speakers for 2019
The Annual General Meeting on 31st January proved to be a successful and enjoyable evening.
March 28th Rachel Barrowcliffe, Worksop – Container Gardening and Growing Vegetables in pots
SOCIETY
Retiring Chairman, Dick Green, reviewed the year and thanked members for donating prizes as well as buying tickets for the monthly raffle. He also thanked friends and local businesses for their continued support. Our Treasurer, Phil Thomas, advised that our accounts remain in credit despite showing a shortfall of £329. The Committee, therefore, decided to increase subscriptions to £8 for the year in order to help cover the increasing costs. Dick read out the list of speakers for 2019 revealing an excellent range of subjects arranged by our speaker finder team, Dawn Collier and Karen Booker. See full programme below. Then came the changes to the Committee. Dick Green and Kathleen Barlow had advised in advance that they were planning to retire and were replaced by Michael Harker and Dawn Collier respectively as Chairman and Secretary. Hillary Bolton and Trisha Hill no longer wish to be on the Committee but will continue to cater at our speaker meetings. Mark Kirk and Carolyn Welborn have agreed to join the Committee. After the formalities, everyone enjoyed a free buffet – many thanks to the catering team. The evening continued with two quizzes with prizes being won by Sally Tyas’ team and Jill Thomas’ team; each winning a box of chocolates. This was followed by two raffles. The Chairman’s raffle, afternoon tea for two, being won by Pat Hall. To conclude the evening, our new Chairman, Michael Harker presented gift vouchers to the retiring committee members and thanked them for their help over the years.
Tickhill & District W.I. On Wednesday 6th March our speaker will be Meryl White whose subject will be ‘Grandma Abson’s Traditional Baking’.
This will be in The Parish Room at 2p.m. where we welcome all visitors. Our 3rd April meeting will be Noel Moroney, who has worked on cruise liners, talking about ‘Women who changed the world’.

Police Report
Do you have a spare room? Enjoy learning about new culture? Earn between £140 to £160 per week?
The Central Neighbourhood Team has gained an additional sergeant this month in the shape of PS Liam Walters. Liam joins us from response and will be based at Rossington Police station. Any issues or concerns you may have in your local area please contact Liam by email at Liam.Walters@southyorks.pnn. police.uk or check out the events page on SYP website for details of your next community drop in. Crime for the last month is quite low. There was an attempted burglary where 3 males tried to force a rear door before making off with no entry gained. Unfortunately, they had more luck with a neighbours address where entry was gained and car keys taken and used to steal a vehicle from the driveway. Both offences reported the next day when CCTV was checked and both offences were captured. There was another attempt on a different date where a male is seen on CCTV trying the door handles to numerous properties. There were 2 reports of theft from motor vehicles reported in this period. Please ensure that you leave vehicles and property locked securely even when you are at home. Don’t leave valuables on display and don’t leave car keys in a visible location where they can easily be spotted. For details of all our meetings please check out our Facebook page at DoncasterCentral NHP or our list of events on our website www.southyorks. police.uk where you will also find contact details for all the Central Neighbourhood staff. GOLF - WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE? So people don’t want to play golf as much as they used to. Cost, shortage of time and the perception of golf as stuffy are some of the reasons. All perfectly understandable in these hectic times.
If you’re busy then spending 4 hours or more at golf is not easy to do, and to join a golf club is expensive if you only play occasionally. As for the stuffiness, well yes it used to be but now we understand that players don’t want to be told what to wear and how to behave. So a lot of golf clubs are looking to break down all of these issues and make golf fun, reasonably priced and played over the length of time people can spare. We’re on a bit of a crusade to get the love back into the game. There are particular initiatives to get girls into the game through GirlsGolfRocks and Academies to get boys and girls to start as soon as they’re able to hold a club. Just think of the health and wellbeing benefits. Out in the fresh air, chatting and joking with your playing partners, having a good walk and challenging yourself against obstacles like trees, water, sand and on our course, squirrels galore! Then afterwards maybe having a drink and bite to eat looking out over the beautiful course. You don’t have to be good, or young, or rich, or anything. You don’t have to be competitive although there are competitions for those who are. So, no matter what age or level of ability you are, come along and have a game. There are plenty of golf courses around here. I represent the lovely, tranquil course that is part of Serlby Park Estate and we’d love you to come and visit us. Find us online at www.serlbypark.co.uk or ring 01777 818268 and talk to Dave or Stuart.

IN THE GARDEN
Hardy Annuals Hardy annuals: the name is an oxymoron. Hardy plants are supposed to be able to survive the winter aren’t they, but annuals, by their definition, don’t. In fact, the names hardy, half-hardy and tender, when applied to annuals, refer to the relative cold tolerance of the newly planted seeds. Hardy annual seeds can handle being frozen in the soil so are ideal for planting outside, either in the autumn or now. Productive, adaptable and cheap, they are the ideal credit-crunch plants. They are also easy-to-grow, so are brilliant for beginner gardeners. For best results sow them as thinly as possible, cover lightly with sifted soil then firm it down. Protect them from cats and birds with netting until the seedlings are well established then thin them out to the distance recommended on the packet. Good flowers for the annual-novice include poppy, calendula, larkspur, fried- egg plants (limnanthes), lovein-the-mist, clarkia and cornflowers. If I could grow only one it would be Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist). It’s an old cottage-garden plant and ‘Miss Jekyll’ is a beautiful, soft, pure blue variety with the added bonus of stripy seed pods once the flowers have faded.
them singly in small pots or directly into the earth. If you sow them directly, plant two seeds into each hole and thin to one once they are established. They may need to be staked as they grow. There are some terrific varieties. A favourite of mine is Prado Red, which as the name suggests, produces deep red flowers. If you pinch them out, they‘ll grow to five feet and produce numerous blooms on each plant. If sunflowers are the kings of the hardy annuals, then sweet peas are surely the fragrant queens. Oldfashioned or antique varieties tend to be best for scent though their flowers are slightly smaller. The great thing about sweet peas is that you have to pick them to prolong flowering so you have a wonderful excuse to have a fragrant home all summer long. Sweet peas should be planted a little deeper than other annuals. They are very thirsty flowers. My granddad used to line his sweet pea trenches with lots of wet newspaper. He won prizes for his blooms, so he obviously knew a thing or two about it. Next time you’re at the garden centre...walk right on by the showy (and expensive) potted plants and head for the seed section. For a very small outlay you can add colour, shape, interest and completely transform your plot ...and if you don’t like it, you can always change it again next year. Happy gardening!
The king of the hardy annuals though has to be the sunflower. Children particularly love to grow them. Sow

Doncaster Rambler’s Tickhill Figure-of-Eight
A record number of 51 ramblers met on this crisp, bright morning in the centre of Tickhill, by the Buttercross. After an initial introduction and some historical facts about the village, we took a westerly direction towards the remains of Maltby Mine, passing bushes full of hazel catkins - a sure sign that Spring is on its way. On route we passed a memorial to the miners who lost their lives in an explosion directly under our feet. We began to circle back and followed Stump Cross Lane where David explained the complex process by which the footpath had been re-established for use by the public. We arrived back in Tickhill from the south by way of the mill pond and castle where interpretive boards provided interesting background information. There was a choice of a pub or several cafes which was helpful, given the large number of walkers.

Discover Arts Award Course at Tickhill St Mary’s We are delighted that the Year 2 class at Tickhill St Mary’s CofE Primary School has been taking part in the Discover Arts Award Course. The course is provided by Doncaster Community Arts (DARTS), funded by the Department for Education. The children have been taking part in a range of interesting and inspiring arts activities. As part of the Arts Award journey, the children have been completing a Discover Arts Award log book by learning about different art forms. During this journey, the children have had the opportunity to work with an artist named Dan Jones. Dan is a talented sculptor who has created sculptures for public spaces, rural environments and private collections. His work can be seen throughout the UK and worldwide in places such as South Korea, Cyprus and Dubai. As part of the learning, Dan brought some of his smaller sculptures into the classroom and the children loved learning about how he made them. He has also shared some photographs of his bigger sculptures too. Year 2 were very excited to learn about the process of creating such magnificent sculptures and finding out the stories that have inspired Dan’s creations. Working with Dan has been a wonderful learning opportunity for the children because they have been able to ask him questions about his work and experiences. Dan has also taught the children different art forms such as observational drawing and making clay coil pots. This experience has deepened the children’s understanding of the arts and using different forms to express oneself. Through this provision the children have also further developed essential life skills including, confidence, communication skills, problem solving and team work. Year 2 are now looking forward to working with the musician Gary Hammond from the band Beautiful South. 50

Tickhill Estfeld School Kung Hei Fat Choi The Year of the Pig In school we often learn about other cultures, their traditions and festivals. The pupils enjoy researching the reasons and stories behind the traditions and enjoy celebrating the similarities and differences that they identify between them and our own culture and traditions. Recently our Reception Class celebrated the Chinese New Year with a banquet – they feasted on noodles,

rice, prawn crackers amongst other delicious things and everybody gave the chopsticks a good try – perseverance is the key! During the week the pupils had learned about how the Chinese New Year came to be named after an animal, had a go at dragon dancing and made dragon masks. Are you a pig? During 2018 we were able to fully refurbish the kitchen area at Tickhill Community Library. The kitchen is well used by our active team of volunteers, as well as lots of regular users of our meeting room and also for producing the refreshments for our regular fund-raising coffee mornings and afternoon teas. The kitchen however, wasn’t really fit for purpose with a lack of worktop space, very little storage and deteriorating fittings and flooring.
Thanks to generous donations from the Taylors of Tickhill Making a Difference Locally scheme, Tickhill & District Lions and Rotary Club of Doncaster, together with our own fundraising, we have been January and February saw 9 of our swimmers able to make the kitchen a much more pleasant compete at the Nottinghamshire County place to be, with the cupboard space and work Championships (some pictured below). They did surface required for this busy space. Coming up later in February we visit the Nottinghamshire Champs again but this time with relay teams. All our club are now looking forward to our very own Club Championships which are due to take place in March.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support the Library, allowing us to continue to develop and improve the space for the benefit of the community.

Dear Friends, Everybody goes through difficult times in one’s lifetime. For some, it can be loss of a loved one, a job or a relationship. For others, it can be an event that has broken them over the years and hence, make not to move on.
Talking of events that can break people, I am reminded of the Old Testament stories of the Israelites in exile. God had promised to be with them in a covenant relationship by loving, blessing and protecting them. As part of that relationship, the Israelites promised to love God by obeying his laws and being good to each other and their neighbours. However, the Israelites broke their promises many times, generation after generation. God was very patient with them and warned them through his prophets that if they carried on with their disobedience, a day of reckoning would come when they would have to bear the consequences of their actions. It happened that God allowed them to be overran by the Babylonians and they were shipped into exile in Babylon. In exile, the Israelites were disappointed because they could not relate with God as before. Although God was still present in their lives and even went on to encourage them to live their lives in the normal situation, their disappointments overshadowed their faith in God. They even went further to accused God of not loving them. Isaiah 49: 14 states, ‘But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.”
In the Old Testament days, a tattoo was a permanent mark and would never disappear. In other words, God is saying to you that you may feel insignificant, unloved, lonely, etc. but in God’s eyes, you are important, very important. He sees you every day and thinks about you every day of your life. He remembers you every day and wants to be part of your life. I wonder if you can take the trouble to trust him and tell him of what you think of the situation in which you are in now. That is also called prayer. You know what, God heard the cries of the Israelites, but it took about seventy years for God to lead the Israelites back from exile into Jerusalem. In your prayers, the answer may not be instant, but he is with you and he will carry through your situation. It may feel like seventy years, but remember, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Stay positive in your struggles and continue to trust the God who will never forget you. Yours sincerely,

There are times in our life situations that we feel like being forsaken. As a Minister, I have heard it many times when people ask the question, “where was God when …” It is okay to feel forsaken especially when you feel or think that the situation in which you find yourself is not your fault. However, I wonder if in your accusations or complaints, you have given God a chance to respond. The following was God’s response to the Israelites (Isaiah 49 15 – 16): “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.

Like Christmas and Valentine, Mothering Sunday has become a commercial issue in the western world. I am not saying that we should not be grateful to our mothers, godmothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, and so on. They are very important part of our family lives. However, for some people, Mothering Sunday is a difficult time in their lives especially when they have been through rough times by not having a mother figure in their lives. Sometimes, going through life situations can be like not having a mother figure in your life – forgotten, lonely, unloved, rejected, unprotected, forsaken, frustrated, and so on. But God has an answer for you in your questions – your mother may have forgotten about you, but I will not think of forgetting you. His reason is that he has tattooed you on his palms.

We opened the 2019 season with a return visit from Sue Allen, who first came to talk about her research on the Pilgrim Fathers over ten years ago. Sue is considered to be a leading expert on the Pilgrim Fathers and anyone looking for a fairly local day out might consider Gainsborough Old Hall, the 500 year old Medieval Manor House which played such a large part in the Pilgrims story. Sue’s further research had revealed several more people who were involved and travelled to the New World, these included worshippers from Tickhill. Sue often shows American visitors around, all researching their own family trees and Tickhill has become a regular stopping place on her route.

Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - March 2019
March sees the end of the financial year 2018 and 2019 are years of change and challenge for your Council in several ways, on the financial front where Tickhill Town Council have been and still are facing demands on our resources. Regardless of this, and in accordance with the wishes of the community as expressed in the Neighbourhood Plan, the car park remains free to use as an important support for our business community. Amongst the increases in financial requirements are £584 loss of Parish grant and £8000 to make provision for a future litter picker. Accordingly, Tickhill Town Council are obliged to adjust the precept by 3% inflation to create an increase of £1765.32 to be added to last year’s request of £58844.00 This will mean an increase of 8p per week on a Band D property. The living wage will be paid to Pavilion staff and if there is any short fall in the finances this will be met from reserves. TTC have always worked to limit the levy on local residents. This time of year is always busy for the Clerk so please be a little patient if the phone is not picked up immediately or emails not answered quickly. Residents are requested to also make complaints about for example pavements and road surfaces to

Mentions of spring seem a little premature at the time of writing this newsletter – but everyone lives in hope! Nevertheless, the initial signs are evident in the flower beds and lawns and once again Tickhill Council will be supporting the Tickhill in Bloom group to provide their superb displays on the roadside approaches into the town and at the Buttercross. Thanks go to all the volunteers who raise money to purchase the plants; then plant them out and maintain the beds throughout the year. OUR SPRING JUMBLE SALE will be held on March 16that 12:00 in the Scout & Guide HQ. We would be very grateful for any items that you might wish to donate to us for our sale. These can be delivered to the HQ from 10:00. All goods are welcome but we are not able to handle furniture. This is simply because if it doesn’t sell, disposal of such items is problematic as we cannot store anything for future sales. To arrange collection please call myself – Bob Kitchen – on 01302 743430. We are very pleased and proud to announce that Jo Morrison, an exmember and now a leader of Phoenix Explorer Scout Unit who meet in our headquarters in Tickhill, was awarded her Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award at St James’ Palace at
the beginning of February. This is no mean achievement having spent at least 12 months working towards the award whilst studying at college, working and helping to lead the Explorer Unit. Since the beginning of February we have had a new leader, Clare Wellings, join the leadership team for our Beaver Colony. Even though she is in the early stage of her training she has brought a fresh approach to crafts and introduced the Beavers to new and challenging activities. The Cubs have continued with working to their Essentials of First Aid badge and spent an interesting
evening learning about broken limbs, slings and bandaging. Most of the Cubs decided to go home still wearing the bandages much to the surprise of their parents who turned up to what looked like carnage. The youngsters’ parents were soon reassured though that all was well. Being a leader can be good fun and even bring a smile to your face, especially when the youngsters do something quite unexpected like bursting into song when a cub demonstrates his “prowess” at playing his trumpet and the pack recognise the tune and join in!! Why not come along and give it a try – new adults are always welcome!
