Actually it took more than just the weekend as for the first 6 months it was delivered entirely by me, my husband and my Dad with other family members roped in on the odd occasion—what a relief it was when it grew enough to be able to employ a team of distributors. The first issue was just 24 pages and printed in black and white how things have changed since then! Thank you to everyone who has supported it, and helped it to grow to what it is now. OMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER ‘Let Justice nd Prevail’ On Friday 2 March over 3 million people worldwide will be praying and worshipping together during an annual day of prayer. The service has been prepared by the women of Malaysia, a country where women still face discrimination and violence. ickhill & District Lions This month, Tickhill and District Lions Club are reaching out to the community to find people who could benefit from one of the many initiatives we support – Message in a Bottle. Message in a Bottle (or MIAB) is a simple idea that can save the life of anyone on medication or who suffers allergies. It takes the form of a small green bottle in which the user keeps a full record of their medical prescriptions, allergies and any information that may be required in the event of an emergency. It includes a form to prompt users on what details to record, stickers so that Paramedics know to check the fridge (that’s where the bottle needs to be stored for easy access!) and full instructions on how it should be used. As a minimum it saves the Emergency Services valuable time identifying you and your emergency contacts, and at best, by telling whether you have special medication or allergies, it is a potential lifesaver and provides peace of mind to users, their friends and families. And this is where we need you! Please help us to identify anyone that can benefit from this little green bottle. It might be your parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles or the lady down the road. You might be part of a community centre, social group or a chess club – if anyone there takes medication they need a green bottle! ICKHILL BOWLING CLUB PRE-SEASON MEETING The pre-season meeting of Tickhill Bowling Club will be held on Monday 26th.March 2012, at 2:00 p.m.in the Tickhill Institute. Tree Planting at Estfeld Tickhill Countryside Group and Tickhill Explorer Scouts Last year we began to improve the school grounds and make our local environment more accessible to the pupils. We now have raised beds and a poly tunnel in which to grow produce. We are also very fortunate to have an extensive school field and are keen to develop it further, for our own sake and also for the sake of the environment and wildlife. At the end of January we were very pleased to welcome some old friends back to Tickhill Estfeld. The Countryside Group have worked with the school before; indeed many of the existing trees on the school field were originally planted by them. Likewise the Explorer Scouts helped with the work involved last year whilst we were establishing our school garden; they also took part in some fundraising activities to provide the school with some plants and ceramic planters. Both groups spent a day at the school planting young trees on the school field. The trees are grown on locally and then transplanted to suitable sites. On this occasion the groups removed some of the trees planted earlier that had failed to thrive, replacing them with new saplings. They also added some new saplings to fill in gaps around our perimeter fence. The varieties planted included walnut, ash, holly, spindle and oak. We really appreciate the time and effort of everybody involved. Thank you to Karen and Dave Booker, Carolyn and Kevin Welborn, Stuart Allen and Tony Sheridan from the Countryside Group, and Graham Harrop, Simon Pick, George Woolly, John Brookfield, George Brookfield and Kieffus Creaser form Tickhill Explorer Scouts. We are very pleased that both the Countryside Group and the Venture Scouts have again chosen to support our work in school. Tickhill is very fortunate to have such public spirited and generous people in their local community. We are very much looking forward to seeing the trees develop and hope to work with both groups again in the future.

We are looking into the possibility of alternative routes and hope to reschedule the trip later in the year. ickhill Music Society Over the years the Piano Recital has been a well-regarded feature of Tickhill Music Society’s programme planning. Their concert on 20 January continued that tradition in fine style. The pianist, Christopher Guild, generously sponsored by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, provided an unusual programme and some impressive playing which was enthusiastically received by the audience. In Beethoven’s ‘Pathétique’ sonata he emphasised the turbulent contrasts of dynamics and speed. The beautiful lyrical theme of the second movement made a marked contrast. Then to Respighi, a composer many of us know only through his large orchestral works. In contrast we heard three reflective preludes based on Gregorian and religious themes. With sensitive and respectful playing, these were something of a revelation, showing an aspect of this composer unfamiliar to many of us. Franz Liszt was a piano virtuoso of prodigious talent. One of his specialities were transcriptions in which he would take well known themes from other composers and transform them into elaborate concoctions of his own. The one we heard was his paraphrase of themes from Gounod’s opera ’Faust’, notably the famous waltz. This was elaborately embellished by Liszt to show off his supreme pianistic skills. Christopher Guild dashed it all off with appropriate panache. After the interval we enjoyed the six pieces of Debussy’s ‘Children’s Corner’ suite, written for his young daughter, whose world it explores. ‘Jimbo’s Lullaby’ is suitably elephantine and the delicate ‘Snow is Dancing’ all elegant musical impressionism. The suite is rounded off with the boisterous ‘Gollywog’s Cakewalk’. Delightful music making. Finally to Scriabin, a piano prodigy whose early works were influenced by Chopin. Later in life his music became what Christopher Guild described as ‘experimental’, even mystical. This sombre third sonata stands at the threshold of that strange later period. Scriabin originally called it ‘Gothic’ and likened it to a ruined castle. It certainly has monumental blocks of sound with a quieter third movement which is tender, sorrowful and rather dreamlike. At a first hearing it is difficult to cope with the complexity and soul-searching and I was grateful for the ‘Gothic’ reference as a framework for this complex work. So, an imaginative programme played by a performer with considerable technical skill and great promise rounded off another rewarding Music Society concert. 28| Tickhill Today

From: SOCIETY for the PRESERVATION OF OLD FOLKLORE
(S.P.O.O.F) Essential Guidance for Newcomers to Tickhill. To help newcomers to Tickhill settle quickly into the life of this historic town they need to be aware of several ancient customs and practices that people are expected to observe. These are listed under various headings. TRAFFIC: Parking. There is limited parking space in the town. You are advised to emulate the locals by parking on the pavement, in a space labelled for disabled drivers, across somebody’s driveway, at a bus stop or on double yellow lines. It is quite in order to copy delivery vans and double park for short times. Driving. Although there are speed restriction signs, local residents are not affected and are free to frighten pedestrians. Cycling. Cyclists should ride along the middle of pavements so as not to interfere with speeding road traffic. It is anti-social to sound a bell which only alarms pedestrians. Teenagers should ride at speed in order to stimulate the reactions of elderly walkers. Motorised wheelchairs. Drivers are expected to show that they are not totally decrepit by racing briskly along the pavement. Sounding any form of warning is regarded as just showing off. PEDESTRIANS: Communication. You should be aware that the official forum for chatting with groups of friends is on the narrow stretch of pavement outside Taylor’s shop and between Fentons and Eatons. If you can manage to have a buggy or large dog in your group it helps to provide traffic calming and slows down people who are just trying to rush about. Road crossing. It is only the very frail who are expected to use the pedestrian crossing. More active people should cross busy roads at any convenient place by dodging through gaps in the traffic. This can be quite exciting. Pavement etiquette. Older people should remember always to step into the roadway to allow groups of youths to proceed unhindered. Passing motorists may suddenly need to take avoiding action but will often give a blast on the horn in recognition of your polite behaviour. Incidentally gangs of youths in town are expected to enliven quiet evenings with noisy revelry fuelled by alcohol. SHOPPERS: Taylors. Always choose the largest available trolley even for only a few items. If you meet someone else with a large trolley, stop in the middle of the aisle to exchange pleasantries. Post Office. Never be seen alone. Try to join others in a jolly queue passing a pleasant half-hour bemoaning the weather, the Council or the shortage of counter assistants. ENVIRONMENT: Parties. You can win popularity by holding all-night parties with lots of explosive fireworks until the early hours of the morning. Litter. It is recognised locally that discarded cans, plastic packaging and half-eaten takeaways can add extra colour to the flower beds in the town centre. Speaking fo friends and acquaintances it is very apparent that Customer Service has deteriorated over the years, unfortunately, some local business are not immune from this trend. There have been numerous occasions where phone calls to local advertised businesses , where messages were left have been ignored or not followed up and appointments not kept. Gross Bad Manners and Bad Business. It is very annoying to find this happening. Due to present economic climate this should be more important than ever. The customer is the most important person in your business, in Person, by Telephone, by letter and more recently by email. Local Resident. 34| Tickhill Today

A number of current and prospective developments may be of interest to readers. Anyone going to Doncaster Carr during January would have noticed a huge crane, hired at a cost of £45,000 per day to put in place the beams for a new bridge over the railway. The work should have been done over Christmas but the weather intervened and it had to wait for a calm Saturday night for completion. This was the biggest obstacle in the dualling of White Rose Way from Doncaster to the M18. This work will be followed by a link road into Rossington and through to Parrotts Corner; there may be little current need in traffic terms for the latter but it could have advantages for residents of Tickhill, both in providing access to the M18 and in an alternative route for the east-west traffic which thunders through the town. Locally long overdue resurfacing of Common Lane and Alderson Drive may give us hope for other repairs. Nationally there is pressure building up against the speed of traffic along residential streets. Curiously we should already have 20mph limits off our main roads in Tickhill if DMBC had completed its 10-year programme for the whole borough, approved in 2000. Somewhere along the way, it got abandoned. On the wider front, many rail infrastructure projects have recently been approved. Although Yorkshire has done well, the closest to us is promised increased capacity at Sheffield Station, which will be welcome if trains from Doncaster run in and out without delay. Our local trains are uncomfortably crowded but there seems to be no immediate plan to rectify that. The most eye-catching improvements are a new southern entrance to Leeds Station and electrification between Manchester, Leeds and York. Wadworth has a new radio club With the help of Mrs Moseley, Mrs Telford has opened a radio club for KS2. There is a kids corner where Lauren and Lois go around the playground (at break time) asking the same question to find peoples opinions. DJ’s (Holly and Ethan), interviewers (Mackenzie, Jessica, Abigail and Lily), jokers Hannah, Sophie and Morgan. Also, doing sports is Bradley and George and the newsreaders are Mackenzie and Georgina. On Thursday the 9th of February there was a school disco to raise money (£240) for the year 6’s going to Kingswood as it is very expensive! Some year 6’s had jobs such as selling refreshments and selling raffle tickets.

ickhill Horticultural Society Once again the pie and pea supper encouraged an excellent turnout for the AGM at the end of January, and if we had advertised that Dennis Elliott was going to cook Haggis to supplement the pies there might have been a queue out onto Northgate! The ninety members attending had the opportunity to savour a Burns Night slice of the delicacy. Many thanks Dennis. President Ellis Baldwin thanked the Committee for their efforts and Chairman Ray Hill reviewed an enjoyable and well-supported year. Speaker Finder Eric Brough was thanked for an interesting and entertaining range of subjects and his list of speakers for 2012 was well received. The Financial Report revealed that an Annual Show profit of £182.11 contributed towards an overall surplus for the year of £369.96. Thanks were expressed not only to everyone for organising or supporting the income earning activities such as raffles, tombolas and the sale of plants but also the catering team for the control of costs and those who waived their prize money at the show. The committee was re-elected en bloc and members were advised that there is adequate space in the committee room for any volunteers to be welcomed with grateful thanks. Our March speaker, on Thursday 29th, is Mr. Maitreya of the Japanese Garden and Meditation Centre, Newark, whose theme will be ‘Japanese Garden, Meditation and Haika poetry’. The venue is the Methodist Schoolroom starting at 7.15pm. New members always welcome. Annual subscription £7. Visitors £3 per meeting. Phil Thomas es Francophiles de Tickhill Our February meeting saw the return of Thierry Viennois. He gave an excellent, illustrated talk on the French Revolution, including songs from that era. The evening was very well attended. On 7th March the subject of our speaker, Patricia McCredie, will be her 30 year friendship with a family from Brittany. Entitled '3 Weddings, 5 Christenings and 1 Funeral', she will talk about her involvement in the family's various celebrations etc over the years. Do come and join us even if you are not a member. arish Room News March - almost Spring! Warmer days hopefully! (Although at the time of writing it's difficult to imagine!) Our lovely Parish Room is being booked for such a wide variety of 'events', from children parties to 80th birthday parties; coffee mornings to wine tasting, Pilates to Yoga, ballet, tap and jazz dancing, from fund raising to the selling of gold and silver! The size and style of the room seems to suit every occasion. If you have an 'event' or 'occasion' coming up in the future please contact me. The Parish Room boasts a fully equipped kitchen, including a complete dinner service for up to 45, full sized cooker, dishwasher and microwave, and a central location with plenty of parking. rime in Tickhill Are we bothered about crime in Tickhill? Well, maybe not as much as we think we are! For many years now the town has had an active Neighbourhood Watch Scheme but only six residents turned up to the last meeting. Even if all the present co-ordinators had attended, there would still be many streets in Tickhill left uncovered by the benefits that being in a Neighbourhood Watch can bring. It is true that, compared to some of the surrounding areas, Tickhill does not have a great deal of crime. But there is crime here. If you are a victim of crime or if you live near a victim of crime and are hence more apprehensive, or even if you only know a victim of crime, if you have merely heard that a crime has been committed, crime has affected your life and, in a way, you are a victim. We jump to have regular health check-ups with inoculations, ‘flu jabs, eye tests, scans etc, all in the hope that we can identify possible future problems and take action to avoid them or to minimise the threat. We would not dream of doing otherwise but, when it comes to identifying similar indicators apropos crime, well, apparently, – dream on! Neighbourhood Watch schemes have proved very effective in helping to combat crime, but, for them to be so, it needs a dedicated team of co-ordinators and a wide areal coverage. At the moment Tickhill seems to be lacking in these two things. It need not be like this. Bernard Rounthwaite, the group’s overall co-ordinator, makes very sure he is as up to date as possible with all happenings in Tickhill. He attends all the PACT meetings (which, incidentally, anyone can attend) and runs the regular local Neighbourhood Watch meetings – but he cannot do it with just six attendees. So, are you bothered about crime in Tickhill? Even if your street already does have a Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator (and Bernard would be able to tell you – his number is 744459), become proactive yourself - the more the better. ayflower Animal Sanctuary , Narrow Lane, Bawtry Doncaster As the weather gets colder we have to use all our resources to keep our dogs warm and dry. This can be a never ending task, but somehow we manage it. The weather has been so cold our dogs have been kept indoors for longer periods and when they are in there pens we make sure there are plenty of coats available to keep them warm. The snow hasn't as yet wreaked the havoc that it did last year. But I guess there is still time. We are still seeing lots of dogs and cats being abandoned. Recently 2 such dogs were left tied to our gate, this is really sad and if the owners would have just come to us we would have done our best to help. The dogs are fit and healthy so obviously came from a good home. At least the owners didn't just abandon them on a busy road or worse tied up in a wood and left to die. They made sure they were safe and sure to be found. We are still seeing an influx of cats and kittens, again these are often left in a cat carriers at our gate. We have the most beautiful cats and kittens. Please if you would like to give a cat a loving home come along and see if you can find that special pet, I am sure you wont be disappointed. I talked about Mary the Spaniel cross in the last issue, she had horrendous burns on her little body. Well she is now with her forever loving new owners, leading a very spoilt life. They already had a dog of their own and wanted another as a companion. Mary has fitted in perfectly I am told, so there you are another happy ending. I would like to thank everyone that has called me to ask about Mary, I think she could have been re-homed ten times over. We also have some very beautiful Cyprus Poodles that need good homes. These little dogs are very pretty often cream and strawberry blonde in colour. Again please come to look round if you are thinking of wanting to adopt a dog we will give you as much advise as possible as to which dog would suit your lifestyle. We still need lots of towels and bedding to keep our dogs and cats dry and happy. I would like to thank everyone that has donated so far. ickhill and District Local History Society
At our January meeting Mike Oliver talked about the Lindholme Trackway. This was a wooden “railroad” dating back to the Bronze Age (circa 5000 years ago) which had been constructed to allow the passage of people, animals and wheeled vehicles across the boggy Thorne moors. The trackway preserved in the peat was about 3m wide with wooden rails spaced about 2m apart. Mike suggested that the trackway may have formed part of a route to Bawtry and further south(although the alignment of the short section excavated does not support this). Unfortunately time ran out before Mike could enlarge on this theory. However it is fascinating to think that we may live close to the Bronze Age equivalent of the M1 or the proposed HST line! Previous fairs have been held in September, the timing of this one was changed to coincide with the Doncaster Local History Festival which comprised a series of events during the first two weeks of Februrary. Thanks to all who helped especially Lesley Nicholson and Roger Ranson without whose enthusiasm and efforts our exhibition would not have taken place. Our next meeting will be on Thursday March 15th when Jane McCormish will talk about the “Medieval Archaeology of Lower Fishergate, Doncaster. Well, as expected, no-one has offered to give us a television or buy his own TV licence – heyho. Let us move on to what Scouting is all about. As I have said previously, 2012 is our 50th birthday. Our first official celebration will be on March 29th when we hold a Thanksgiving Service in St Mary’s Church for all current and ex-members of the Scout Group. This will be followed by a buffet in the Scout & Guide HQ. We hope to have the original scout leader who started Scouting in Tickhill in 1962 – Mr Brian Read - in attendance. Both Scout troops have been very active over the past month or 2. They have visited Potteric Carr to do some pond dipping. A group of Scouts went behind the scenes at Doncaster Interchange and were privileged to view how the security systems worked at the bus station and how the railway station functioned. Both the Scout troops and the Cub pack have been out hiking at night over the cold wet fields around Tickhill. Some Scouts went to the Winter Camp (Freezer camp) at Squirrel Wood and the Explorers went to a similar camp at Walesby. We are holding our first Jumble Sale of 2012 on March 24th in the Scout & Guide HQ. As usual, the doors will open at 10.00 for the delivery of Jumble and the sale will begin at 12.00. Have a good look in your cupboards and drawers and rummage out all those clothes you never really wanted, duplicated Christmas presents and other highly desirable objects. We can make good use of them and someone may just be looking for that objet d’art long secreted in your cupboard. Plans are afoot for Tickhill Gala. This will be held on July 7th on Tithes Lane Playing Fields regardless of any other celebrations being held in the village. Tickhill Town Council I recently received this notice from our Neighbourhood Management Team, and promised to include it in my piece for Tickhill Today for March. “We are again trying to remind / encourage residents to garage cars wherever possible, take their keys to bed instead of leaving them in the door or down stairs on hooks or table near to front doors. We are not wishing to unduly worry residents; however we wish to pass on this community safety message to as many residents as possible. Area officers and SYP staff will also be passing on this message whilst out undertaking their day to day duties with a view to “target hardening” in the community.” On a completely different matter, unfortunately, Tickhill Town Council has found it necessary to increase their precept by £2000.00. It will mean on average an increase of 2p per week per household on band ‘D’. As a council they need this small increase to help towards the ever increasing fuel, water and telephone bills. The Pavilion was built twenty years ago and as all you regular users realise it is becoming shabby and tired. The lack of modern equipment in turn increases running costs. It desperately needs updating to meet health and safety regulations and atheistic standards. We receive no other income, either from grants or business rates, therefore the Council find it necessary to make this small increase. I hope you all understand. Wherever possible I am trying to reduce the regular outgoings and by the time you read this we hope that the multi programmable timer will be in situ. This should ensure the hall is warm for you on arrival and the heating off when the hall is not in use. Please keep me informed how you find the new timer so that we can make any fine adjustments. Also, if you witness antisocial behaviour please report it to the Police. Wilful damage at the Pavilion costs us a considerable amount of money and we all pay for it in the end. A message to regular users is to please make sure all your bookings are in the diary. Check them carefully yourselves please, as invoices are raised from the diary and I would hate to charge you too much!!!!
