Welcome to the

March 2017 edition

To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow ÂŁ11.00 Audrey Hepburn

I read the advice in this month’s Garden View article with interest, I’ve never been particularly interested in gardening before, but this year I have a new garden that has been lovingly cared for by the previous owner for many years. It has well stocked borders with everything from tiny snowdrops to a huge Lime tree within it, (including huge numbers of things whose names I don’t know), it has struck me that I had better develop some green ďŹ ngers if the garden has any hope of continuing to look as good next spring as it does now! March does bring with it the promise of the spring to come, as daodils make their way into ower and early buds begin to appear. Don’t forget to change your clocks at the end of the month – which will mean that it stays lighter for longer into the evening and the days will gradually lengthen.

The April issue will be delivered to you late March. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th March. Easter falls a couple of weeks into April this year, so don’t forget to let me have details of any Easter events taking place around the area. Enjoy March and I will be back in a months’ time with your April magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

Amongst the many admiring comments in the Visitors’ Book, people say how clean and cared for the building looks. Church cleaning is done entirely by volunteers, working in teams of three or four. Finding a forever home Mayflower Sanctuary Narrow Lane Bawtry Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, we have had a busy month rescuing abandoned dogs, it’s difficult to believe that some poor dogs are literally dumped out of cars and left at the side of the road .. That’s what happened to one very old little dog, it was all skin and bone and left to die in a layby. We have taken into our Sanctuary more abandoned dogs than usual since the Christmas period.

Dear Friends, I did promise myself that I would try and share with readers some of my experiences from my visit to family and friends in Ghana, my home country. First, I did not realise how British I had become after living in this country for about 15 years till I was hit by the hot and humid weather in Ghana. I was always trying to hydrate myself to stay cool. However, I did enjoy visiting my parents and other relations. Another point is that I had lots of culture shocks to deal with in the short time that I was there. One was the fact that I did not see anyone throwing rubbish on the streets. I remember that throwing rubbish on the streets was one of the issues the government of Ghana was dealing with before I landed in England about 15 years ago. I was even more surprised to hear that the law enforcement agencies could dish out instant and hefty ȴ QHV Ȋ7KHVH ȴ QHV FRXOG EUHDN DQ DYHUDJH worker’s pocket, I was told. We are now in the season of Lent – a time when some people decide to stay away from food or some types of food, spend less and / or even try as much as possible to rid themselves from some addictions, among other resolutions. If you are one of such group of people, I wonder if I can ask you to give a reason why you do what you do in Lent. Is it a case of ‘everyone does it so‌’ or is it a case of ‘loving others as myself so‌’? Loving others as yourself implies that you need to care for yourself before you can be in a better position to look out for others. Going back WR WKH ELEOH SDVVDJH LQ 0DUN ZH PXVW Č´ UVW love God with our beings before we can love others as ourselves. Loving God includes engaging with God with issues in and around us. Kate Van Millingen For those of you who missed the evening of merry fundraising at Tickhill’s Methodist Church on 1st February with Barnsley’s writer and broadcaster Ian Macillan you have another chance, for Ian is playing at the end of March in Firbeck (see below) If your doctor has ordered a belly-full of mirth then go and enjoy yourself. Also I can recommend a trip to Hull. By the time you get there they might have finished digging up the City Centre which has been sprucing itself up for the visitors to the City-of-Culture 2017. In the main square is the largest single cast object in the history of man, a giant B75 wind-turbine blade made by Siemens, not a stones-throw from the spot where it lies… but not for too much longer, it leaves after 18 March – such a stunning object sited in the city centre. www.hull2017.co.uk/whatson/ events/blade/ Firbeck Village Hall Friday 31 March at 7.30pm. And there are some gemsof-paintings in the Art Gallery. It’s great to have a sympathic introduction to works of art, and I think this will be an eye-opener. Slimming World Success! There’s been some very negative reporting regarding weight loss organisations including Slimming World in the media recently. Well I can only report from my own perspective. I joined Slimming World in September 2010, I was at my lowest ebb, I felt hopeless to deal with my increasing weight & although I didn’t think it would help thought I would give it a try. I had tried to lose weight many times, going on unsustainable restricting diets, not seeing a huge loss so then going off the diet altogether in frustration and starting the cycle again. I realise now that starving yourself is not the way to do it, eating a healthy well balanced diet is. 0\ ¿ UVW ZHHN ZDVQœW P\ EHVW ZHHN , ORVW OE and I was gutted, everyone else who had joined the week before had greater weight losses! It would have been so easy to give up, but I persevered. The following week I ORVW OEV DQG , ZDV RYHU WKH PRRQ , ZDV enjoying the food, & I didn’t feel like I was on a diet. Of course Slimming World’s fabulous Food Optimising plan isn’t a diet, it’s a healthy eating plan that all the family can enjoy. Once a member reaches their target weight which they set for themselves, we encourage them to keep attending group & while ever they are in their target range it is free to attend. This is because we know that reaching that target is not the end of the story, maintaining it can be as challenging as reaching it & attending group where they will get the support, motivation & any help they need is as important as it ever was. Sometimes members will stop attending for whatever reason & this is generally when they start to put weight back on, falling into their old eating habits. 6OLPPLQJ :RUOG DOZD\V SXW WKHLU PHPEHUV Âż UVW we understand the pain of being overweight, DOO RXU FRQVXOWDQWV ZHUH PHPEHUV Âż UVW even though the eating plan is fantastic the psychological side can get in the way. Multiskills Festival at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College We are fortunate at Estfeld to work in a pyramid of schools that to try to ensure that our pupils have access to a wide range of P.E. and sporting opportunities, from Reception to Year 6. This year we have a new pyramid Sports Co-ordinator, Richard Webb, who organises whole-class events for all pupils up to Year 4, and competitive events in Years 5 and 6. He also organises our bowling and curling events in school during the year too, which all pupils enjoy. Shortly before half-term in February, our 30 TICKHILL TODAY

Year 2 pupils competed in the annual Multiskills Festival, alongside their peers from the other Edlington pyramid primary schools. Running, jumping, throwing and balancing - a great time was had by all. There was a wonderful atmosphere in the Sir Thomas Wharton sports hall, with students cheering on their peers and staff encouraging the children. The pupils demonstrated fair play and respect for each other throughout the fantastic event and really enjoyed the morning. Well done to everybody in our Year 2 class who represented Estfeld so well. The school is very proud of your contribution and your behaviour and attitude on the day. We would also like to express our special thanks to Mr Webb and his Year 8 students, who successfully organised and ran the event. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Doncaster Business Ambassadors Massive congratulations to Alice Arnold, Will Higgins and Georgia Curley who represented the college at the Doncaster Business Ambassadors event at Doncaster Racecourse on 1 February 2017. Alice Arnold delivered a fantastic speech at the event. This was very special as our students were the only ones invited to speak following their recent performances at One Doncaster events. Frances Bishop, Doncaster Businesswoman and guest speaker, and who reached the final of the latest series of The Apprentice has offered to come in to college and speak to our students. The pictures show Alice speaking at the event and Will, Georgia and Alice with Frances Bishop.

Through our pastoral system, activities in lessons and extra-curricular opportunities, our young people are immersed in developing the principles that underpin SMSC. s e r p Y o t p i r T

Over half term, Y10 and 11 History students will be visiting Ypres in Belgium. Students will spend time exploring places associated with World War One including Tyne Cot Cemetery, Langemarck, Essex Farm, Memorial Museum Passchendale, Sanctuary Wood, Caterpillar Crater and Hill 60.

Students will also visit the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate where two students will lay a wreath on behalf of the Academy.

ES AT MALTBY ACADEMY STUDENTS TAKE ON Y10 student mathematicians have recently enjoyed a visit to Disneyland Paris where they took part in lots of different experiences and activities. Students spent time in the Park collecting information for their functional maths projects, as well as finding time to enjoy the rides. They were recording information to calculate different capacities of rides and students spent some of their time finalising their maths work from their findings. They also had an evening of Cowboy entertainment at Buffalo Bills!

LOOKING

FORWARD TO: The students were a credit to the Academy and even had the opportunity to practice their French whilst there. The maths they produced was to a very high level, so it was an educational, fun and successful trip!

community Garden View

By Rachel Leverton

Spring has Sprung! The other day someone said to me, ‘You are so lucky…you have a beautiful garden.’ I thanked her of course, but I really wanted to say, ‘Luck has very little to do with it. A beautiful garden does not happen by pure chance. It takes a bit of work and planning.’ As the spring equinox looms, the trees blossom and daffodils bloom. The garden is waking up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. I am excited to be outside in it but I’m aware for non-gardeners it can seem daunting when everything (including the weeds) starts growing at once! So where to begin? There are three fairly simple tasks which will get you off to a À \LQJ VWDUW 3UXQLQJ LV WKH ¿ UVW WDVN ,W¶V WLPH WR KDUG SUXQH ODWH À RZHULQJ VKUXEV OLNH %XGGOHLD /H\FHVWHULD and Lavateria, but only if the risk of hard frost is SDVW 6SULQJ À RZHULQJ SODQWV VXFK DV )RUV\WKLD and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned LPPHGLDWHO\ WKH À RZHUV IDGH ,I \RX KDYHQ¶W already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting.

Tickhill and District The 2017 season began with Malcolm Barnsdale and Philip Langford showing us just a small part of their fabulous collection of old photographs of Doncaster. These have been collected over the last 30 years, and some of the photographs went back as far as the 1880s. It was particularly fascinating to see the Racecourse, before it was surrounded by houses, and also the early cars and fashions of the day. Lovely long dresses, usually white, and not a pair of jeans in sight! 58 TICKHILL TODAY

Our February Meeting Meetin is ‘Members Night’ when we are celebrating school dinners, and will be dressed and served in the old style.
