Unique Occasions @ Loversall Farm cordially invite you to…
Welcome to
the 10TH BIRTHDAY ISSUE OF TICKHILL TODAY!
Quite a landmark for your local community magazine and I thank everyone who has supported the publication during those 10 years. From the contributors who regularly provide details of their group’s events and meetings, to the distributors who get the magazines out to local homes and of course the advertisers without whom there could be no magazine. Thank you also to all our readers particularly those who use the local businesses, services, clubs and societies promoted within our pages. I never cease to be amazed at how important Tickhill Today is to members of the community, and the number of people who stop me to tell me how useful they find it. It plays a part in linking people together within our vibrant community; helping businesses to grow; and providing people with some traditional print media to enjoy with a cup of tea! I know that many of you always read this introduction and following my comments last month may be wanting to know how my quest for a new kitchen during 2015 is coming along. Well I am pleased to report that some decisions have now been made and by the time the next magazine arrives it is possible that some work may have commenced! More details in future issues! The April issue will be delivered to you late March. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th March. Enjoy March and I will be back in a months’ time just before Easter with your April magazine.
Best wishes, Paula x

St Mary’s School St Mary’s are part of Young Voices 2015! On a cold Thursday afternoon in January, 19 very excited KS2 children from St Mary’s choir set off for The Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield to take part in the Young Voices concert. After a short journey we arrived at the arena where many famous bands have sung. The arena was massive! Gradually, over the next hour, the arena began to fill with choirs from all over the area. Over 4,000 children from many different schools were involved. Rehearsals began at 2.15pm and we sang until 5.00pm, putting dance moves to all the songs we had been learning. It was great fun! The parents and teachers danced too! After a break for our tea and a walk around, parents and friends began to arrive for the evening performance. The concertt b began att 7.15pm. It was fantastic to hear the 4,000 voices and see all the torch lights in the dark. Th 715 Special guests performed too – Lucy Spraggan was there! We all had a wonderful time and can’t wait to go back next year. Thank you Mrs Evans! Freya, Chloe, Lexie, Caitlyn, Tia & Millie (Y5)
Y6 visit to the Keepmoat Stadium On the 27th of January St Mary’s year 6 boys participated in a football tournament at Doncaster Keepmoat. We were thrilled to go and really enjoyed it! The children that went were: Camran; Conner; James; Seb; Mack; Harvey and Henry. We played very good football according to the match officials. The worst thing was the weather, it was freezing! We eased our way through to the group stages with two wins and one draw. It was very close in the first game, we came up against Saltersgate. We went 1-0 up however they came back with two goals to make the score 1-2 to them. Though in the following minutes we created two goals to put us in the lead! The next game we cruised our way through, our opponent was Our Lady of Sorrows. The score was 4-0 to us. Our final match of the group stage was against Warmsworth. It was very tense because if we lost we may not have reached the knock out stages. Thankfully we only needed a draw which we received with a 2-2 draw. One of the funniest moments was when James conceded by being lobbed by the opposite goalkeeper which he did not want to mention! We progressed to the knock out stages where we played against Kirk Sandall, the eventual winners. Unfortunately we got pipped at the post as we lost 2-0 to a very good team. We came home freezing however we had our heads held high. Goal scorer Amount 12

Estfeld School– Multiskills Festival at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College We are lucky at Estfeld to work within a pyramid of schools that work together to try to ensure that our pupils have access to a range of P.E. and sporting opportunities, from Reception to Year 6. The pyramid Sports Co-ordinator, Fiona Palmer, organises whole-class events for all pupils up to Year 4, and competitive events in Years 5 and 6. She also organises our bowling and curling events in school during the year too, which all pupils enjoy. On the last day of school before we broke for half term in February, our Year 2 pupils competed in the annual Multiskills Festival, alongside their peers from the other Edlington pyramid primary schools. Running, jumping, throwing and balancing, a great time was had by all. There was a wonderful atmosphere in the Sir Thomas Wharton sports hall, with students cheering on their peers and staff encouraging the children. The pupils demonstrated fair play and respect for each other throughout the fantastic event and really enjoyed the morning. Well done to everybody in our Year 2 class who represented Estfeld. The school is very proud of your contribution and your behaviour and attitude on the day. We would also like to express our special thanks to Fiona Palmer and her Year 10 students, who successfully organised and ran the event.

THIS GIRL CAN! A recent survey carried out by Sport England found there is a huge gender gap when it comes to sport and physical activity. Two million fewer women than men between the ages of 14 and 40 are physically active on a regular basis and yet 75% of women said they would like to be more active. So what’s stopping them? There were several factors identified as barriers to exercise including the usual suspects of time and cost. One of the strongest reasons that emerged, however, was the fear of being judged. Women were concerned about what they looked like during exercise and were worried that people would think they were ‘rubbish’. As a result, Sport England has launched a huge campaign aimed at getting women exercising. This campaign will show ‘real women’ exercising in a bid to change the inaccurate view that active females must be super-fit and look amazing in lycra. Headlines include – ‘sweating like a pig, feeling like a fox’ and my favourite clip shows someone cycling with the caption reading ‘I’m slow but I’m lapping everyone on the couch’. There’s a thought!

Lady Female 02/7/2014 10 months Lurcher ? ?
My name is Lady a very energetic girl as I am still very young. I need a strong pack leader to guide me. Socialization and training classes would help boost my confidence. I love playing and giving cuddles. A lovable girl that will need time and affection to be a happy lurcher. I have lived with teenagers before and I like to travel.
Mayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry.
Tel: 01302 711330
Yet another stray who has fallen on hard times. Dolly was one of the lucky ones as she was taken in by a kind couple when she turned up in their garden looking very thin and sorry for herself.. Unfortunately she couldn’t stay and her rescuers contacted Mayflower for help. We are sure that she once had owners as she is extremely sociable but for whatever reason nobody has come forward to claim her. Dolly loves people but certainly not other cats or dogs. That way she gets all the fuss! Please dont pass her by – give her the chance of a loving home again.
Name: Thomas Sex: Male Dec 2014 Date into care: 2 Years Age on arrival: RECOMMENDED WITH: Dogs: ? Cats: Yes Children: Older HAPPY TO LIVE AS A: Housecat: Possible Access outside: Yes Thomas came to Mayflower with his Mum after their owner had sadly died. Nobody in the family was able to offer them a place to stay so contacted Mayflower for help. Thomas is extremely sociable with other cats but can be a little nervous around people he doesn’t know well. A quiet home with no young children would suit him best. Especially if there was an existing sociable cat to pal up with. Although he has previously been outside, Thomas would adapt to being a housecat if necessary. Please give him a chance.

My name is Charlie and I have come to Mayflower because my owners new partner is allergic to me. I was quite happy to share him but here I am! I have found life quite difficult here but I’m starting to settle in now. I love fusses, and especially tickles under my chin, but I have to get to know you a bit better first. Please stop and get to know me. I would love you to be part of my new family Charlie loves people but certainly not other cats or dogs. That way she gets all the fuss!

I am one of the carers favourite dogs as I have been at the sanctuary quite a while. I am an intelligent girl and I know all my commands. I love to play and need to be kept occupied and well exercised to be a very happy dog. I can jump quite high so will need very high fencing for my garden. Best suited to a home with experienced dog owners and people that will have plenty of time for me and in a one animal household. I travel well and have lived with teenagers.

TICKHILL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY The annual General Meeting planned for January 29th was called off at lunchtime after the heaviest snowfall of 2015 – so far! The decision proved sensible when by tea time a hard frost created dangerous icy conditions for walking. With a full year of speakers already booked we will endeavour to cover AGM business matters as quickly as possible at the February meeting, which should have been held on 26th just prior to your receipt of this magazine. Congratulations Paula on ten years of Tickhill Today. Thanks to a successful Annual Show in September making a profit of £300.72 we finished 2014 with a surplus of £299.37 so the annual subscription will remain at £7. The second speaker meeting of the year will be held in the Methodist Schoolroom on Thursday 26th March starting at 7.15pm when our speakers will be Robert and Sue Chapman from Lincoln. Their theme will be ‘The growing and care of Hardy Perennial Violas’ and there will be plants for sale. Visitors welcome (£3).

Dementia Peer Support Groups Talking about your worries and problems can be a very good way of releasing some of the stress that can build up when you’re a carer. Your family, friends and the medical and social work team can all listen to your concerns. But sometimes it’s best to talk to someone who knows exactly what you’re going through, because it’s happening to them too. Other carers can offer kindness, sympathy, understanding and advice, and they can make you feel less isolated. Anyone living with Dementia/Alzheimers, or, those who have concerns about their memory, are very welcome to come along to our dementia / alzheimers peer support groups. Edlington Hilltop Centre Community Bell Ringers The volunteers and staff at the Hilltop Centre have been working with local resident and professional Bell Ringer Helen Nichols, to put on very successful Bell Ringing taster sessions. Due to the large amount of interest we have been receiving in the sessions, we are looking to set up 2 groups each week. The groups will be split to cater for Children and Adults. We would love to hear from you, if you are interested in getting involved with the group. You can contact us here at the Hilltop Centre on 01709 863268 to register your details. You don’t need to be able to read music as the ringing is co-ordinated using numbers and full training will be given. We would also like to say a big well done to those who attended the taster sessions. They were ringing tunes as a group in less than 2 weeks, that’s just 6 hours of practice. Everyone involved is having a great time at the sessions, so why not come along for a try out and maybe join them in the future. Bell Ringing is a very enjoyable hobby and encourages team work, co-ordination and socialisation. Anti-social Tenants
BEWARE Assault or threatening behaviour by tenants is, unfortunately, not rare and I have only just recently seen a landlord client who was assaulted by a tenant. garden view
The greenhouse guide “Is there something in your garden you couldn’t live without?” People often ask me, “Is there something in your garden you couldn’t live without?” My reply is always, “My greenhouse.” A greenhouse has many benefits, chief of which for me is that it extends the gardening year. With a greenhouse you can potter in your garden all year round, and grow a range of plants which simply wouldn’t thrive without the extra protection. Before choosing a greenhouse you will need to check whether your local planning authority imposes any restrictions. While you don’t normally need planning permission, building regulations do have to be adhered to. Buy the biggest greenhouse you can afford that will fit comfortably on to your plot - you will always fill it! But even if you can only afford a tiny one - my first one had a base of just 4’ by 5.5’ (1.2m by 1.7m) - it will still be a worthwhile investment. The aluminium- framed types are very sturdy and relatively cheap. Wooden-framed constructions are more attractive though, and often better in a small garden where everything has to earn its keep. Western red cedar is good because it lasts a long time and weathers really well. Greenhouses are even more useful if they are heated. I started out with paraffin heaters, but found they produced a lot of condensation and were messy and smelly. Electric heating is best, and very economical if you fit a system thermostat so that it only switches on when necessary. 44

Apart from heat the most important factor is ventilation. In high summer this is vital to prevent your plants from cooking. Automatic arms which open the vents at a predesignated temperature are really useful. External blinds are also very good as they prevent sun scorch. Finally, fit staging along one edge of the greenhouse for your pots, and dig a soil or gravel bed on the other side for things like tomato plants. Now all you have to do is plant some seeds and invest in a few tender perennials. By Rachel Leverton

Methodist Minister Yearbook Dear Friends,
By the time you will be reading this letter, we will be in lent already. Lent is when people decide to do away with some pleasures as a way of fasting. It is to prepare for the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. Churches Together in Britain and Ireland produces a bimonthly worship material with the title ‘Roots’. In April 2014, it published and distributed a free copy of ‘Roots’ with the title ‘A Generous Life’. I wonder if I can use a bible passage from Isaiah in that issue to remind you of some of the reasons why we fast in Lent. It comes in the form of a conversation between two people labelled as numbers 1 and 2. Below is the conversation: 1. Why do we fast, but God does not see? 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: to share your bread with the hungry? 1. Of course, I know what it is to feel hunger: when it happens I go into the nearest restaurant! 2. You serve your own interests on your fast day, and oppress all your workers. 1. I have the best interests of my work force at heart: I pay them the full amount of the minimum wage, so that my business can remain profitable and I can continue to employ them! 2. You fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting, as you do today, will not make your voice heard on high. 1. I’m always happy to discuss difficult issues with others, and if they find it hard to share my point of view, I shout louder! 1. Why do we humble ourselves, but God does not notice? Humility? You won’t find anyone more humble than me! 2. Is this the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? 1. I’ve always said that there should be equal rights: if some people choose to live in poverty, that’s up to them! 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? 1. It’s true that I do have a couple of rooms in my house that I never use, but I need somewhere to keep all my possessions, don’t I? 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: to bring the homeless poor into your house? 1. When I see children looking so dirty, with the ragged clothes hanging off them, it really makes me appreciate the good quality clothes I’m able to buy. 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: when you see the poor naked, to cover them? 1. Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice? 2. Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am! Have a blessed period of Lent.

Tickhill Together’s Yearbook is (hopefully) now being printed, and will be delivered free to every home in Tickhill during the middle of March. We have much to celebrate in our community, and the different groups and organisations have been penning away to tell us what they have been doing during the last year, and giving some information of what’s in store for this year. There’s a Business Directory towards the back – helpful for what we might need. We hope you find the booklet informative. Look out for the picture of the Buttercross on the front! T

Dr Tim Sheehan The deadline for the inclusion in the February edition had passed long before we received information about the untimely death of Dr Sheehan. However we felt we wanted to include our respects in the first available edition and it is with sadness that we report his death on Friday January 23th 2015 at his home and say thank you for the 10 years of service he gave to the patients of this practice. We have heard many kind anecdotes and comments almost all emphasising his willingness to be available to his patients. As the quotation says ‘No man is an island’ and his passing will have a big impact on the practice which has lost not only a business partner but one of its five doctors and that in its turn will affect us all and will require patience and understanding , as we look for appointments, over the next few months.

NHS Apprentices Along with many businesses the Medical Practice has Apprentices who are following a course in Business Administration. You may have encountered them working in reception or at The Saturday Flu Vaccine Clinic. These apprentices are learning on the job, they have mentors, are eager to learn and to help. It therefore saddens us to report that one of these young people was subjected to verbal abuse by a patient and was deeply upset and affected by this treatment Zero Tolerance Policy. It with equal regret that as a result of the above incident that we have to remind everyone that no NHS facility tolerates abuse and in line with other medical practices this practice has a policy regarding abuse which follows: “Violence or abuse towards any person on our premises will not be tolerated. It is the practice’s policy to remove anyone behaving this way from the list of patients. Arrangements would be made to register our patient with a practice in Doncaster which has special facilities enabling them to manage violent patients.”
We welcome everyone to come and share in the dramatized narrative of Holy Week, leading us from Palm Sunday to Good Friday. Our venue is the Methodist Church and the time 6pm. Light Refreshments will extend our time of fellowship. T

Has your cat been missing since last summer? White Male with Tabby markings on his head, back and tail. First seen in the St Marys area of Tickhill last summer. He disappeared for a while but is now back and sleeping in a shed and being fed and cared for – but as I have several other cats of which he is wary (and they of him) I can’t rehome him permanently and I haven’t been able to get him to a vets to see if he is micro-chipped. Attempts to find his owners both last summer and again recently, have so far been unsuccessful, although the possibility that he came originally from Wadworth has been suggested. If you have any information, or can help to get this cat reunited with his owners please contact Kathleen on 744564 T Although busy, we still have room for one-off bookings for Coffee Mornings, fundraising events, meetings, etc. Businesses may like to note that we now have wifi (free use of!) installed. This is a very useful addition for anyone wishing to use the hall for training or work related meetings. An event to watch out for in the future is the Scarecrow Festival (Saturday 2nd May). We will be open all day for refreshments, until 5 p.m. Hopefully your Scarecrow will be displayed outside the Parish Room. Forms are available from KSM. If you would like to display your Scarecrow outside the Parish Room do ring me first space will be at a premium! We may also be ‘entertained’ by the Ukulele group, Move to Inspire Me Yoga and others!! Also watch out for a new class in the Parish Room - Baby Massage and Yoga. Tickhill . . . but not TODAY At our January meeting Amy Downes, the Finds Liaison Officer for South and West Yorkshire was scheduled to tell us all about local finds, which had come from gardens and fields around Tickhill. Unfortunately on the day, she had totally lost her voice, and her husband, an archaeologist and museum curator came to the rescue, showing us slides of the objects which had been found. He explained that all objects before 1700AD are recorded and the difference between Treasure Trove and items which are simply of archaeological interest. Amy brought several smaller finds for us to examine and handle. Everyone went home determined to examine anything they turned up in their gardens much more closely – hoping of course that it would be Treasure Trove!

Amy and her husband brought their two year old son with them – our youngest visitor ever! – he was as good as gold throughout the evening. We had never thought of the History Society as a pre nursery education club! We have now sold over 700 copies of our book “TICKHILL - discover its past” with the post Christmas period bringing an unexpected “mini boom” in sales to people who had NOT received a copy as a Christmas present. The companion website www.tickhilldiscoveritspast. org.uk continues to be developed and is well worth a visit. At our next meeting on Thursday April 16th Albert Smith will speak on “The History of Mystery” a history of magic throughout the ages. As usual the talk will be in the Methodist Schoolroom, Northgate at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) and visitors will be welcome.

Hope4Benefits Hope4Benefits was set up in August last year to help, support and advise local people about Welfare Benefits, and the changes that are coming into place in the near future and what these mean to those people who are on Benefits. We offer a full welfare benefits service, benefits checks, form filling, support at assessments and tribunals. We can also offer a Supported Appointments Scheme for individuals who due to unforeseen circumstances do not have family living close by. We would arrange to pick them up at their home, take them to the appointments, stay with them, and take them back home for a fee of £20, inclusive of transport. We can help with any medical appointment or even routine social appointments such as hairdressers. When we take an individual to a Hospital Appointment we would be going into the appointment, to take notes and explain what was said in the appointment to relatives. We can also arrange to meet at Community Centres or arrange home visits, and also have space at the South Yorkshire Credit Union in Mexborough. Les Francophiles de Tickhill Many of us dream of having a "pied à terre" abroad but the reality might not prove to be a bed of roses! "The Pleasures and Pitfalls of owning a home in France" presented by locals David and Patricia Yarnell will offer an insight into the efforts required...and the rewards. Their "résidence secondaire" is 50 mins drive from Pau in a beautiful area of South West France. We meet on Wednesday 4th March at 7.30pm at the Parish Room, Tickhill. Refreshments will be provided. Visitors are welcome at a charge of £3. For further details please contact Edwin Simpson on 742714 or Janet Erridge on 745281 T 60

Lent Project 2015 IN AID OF EDEN WHEATLEY Over a year ago a group from our parish went to the launch of “The Eden Project”, which is based on the Cathedrals estate in Wheatley, Doncaster. They were very impressed and touched by this group of Christians who have moved to live in the area to make a difference to the lives of the people there. Not only do they want to improve their lives but they also want to bring people to know Jesus. So the Parish of Wadworth with Loversall have chosen to support the Eden project in Wheatley as part of its Lent Project for 2015. It is hoped that the planned facilities improvement to Wadworth Church will be commencing soon so many of the events will be taking place in the Wadworth Village Hall rather than the Church. We kick off proceedings with a Lent Coffee & Chat in Wadworth Village Hall on Saturday 21st February from 10am 12noon. The following day we give out Jars of G Sunday 9am service The idea of Jars of Grace is to place some coins in the jar at each meal time throughout Lent and think of the Lent Project and all those less fortunate than ourselves. On Sunday 1st March at our 9am and 11am services, Martin Podmore from the Eden Project will be coming to tell us more about Eden in Wheatley, and the following day, Monday 2nd March between 12noon - 2pm we have a Soup Lunch in Wadworth Village Hall and then on Monday 9th March Brenda & Michael Sharpe do a 10 mile sponsored walk. Mrs Vicar will be hosting a Coffee Morning at Wadworth Vicarage on Thursday 19th March between 10am - 12noon and then the Easter Market will in Wadworth Village Hall on Saturday 21st March between 10am - 12noon. We finish with a Music Quiz Night in Wadworth Village Hall on Tuesday 31st March 7.30 pm. Throughout Lent we will be doing a Ribbon of Love, everyone will have the opportunity to sponsor a loved one, past or present, at £1.00 per yard - Each yard will represent someone you love and their name will be written on that piece of ribbon. Our aim is that by Easter Day we will have gone all around the outside of church perhaps more than once! Hope to see you at one of the events Revd Alun Price T

Tickhill Town Council - MARCH 2015
January last year brought the announcement by DMBC that it was their intention to hand over the running of the library to a Community Project. The project has not yet been finalised and is in the hands of the D.M.B.C. and the Charities Commission. However it continues to operate and we must say a big thank you for all the patience that has been demonstrated over the past year. Tickhill Town Council’s volunteer litter picker still strives to make a difference as well as do Tickhill in Bloom and all those other groups who work together to improve our environment and Well Being. Come the beginning of May Tickhill will have the Local and National Elections and Tickhill Council will stand down in April. Not all those who have served the Council tirelessly over the many years will be standing for re-Election. If you think you personally could be an asset to the Tickhill Community please consider standing. The important element is Commitment and Local knowledge, with enough time to attend the Council and committee meetings. A real dedication to the cause! Tickhill Council and various groups are organising once again THE BIG LUNCH. This event will take place on the 31st May 2015, a Sunday. It will be at the Recreation Ground and will be free. Tea, coffee and squash plus biscuits will be provided. Bring your own picnic and gazebo: enjoy the afternoon! Punch and Judy will be there for the children and if it is rained off like last year, Punch and Judy will be performing in the Pavilion. As this month races to a close then so does my accounting year when the accounts and books are prepared for the internal and external auditors. The Council have been able to hold their precept steadfast, for yet another year.

Making improvements to the Pavilion over the past few years has proved a real investment, lettings are up, almost to capacity and as a result the Council have been able to increase their staff level of Caretakers giving more opportunities in the area. The team now consists of Jamie as Supervisor, who deals with the bookings and we welcome Bradley-Ann and Andrea who joined in January. The Council hopes they will settle in and become integral members.

The room hire for the Pavilion is still at £8.00 per hour and is ideal for children’s parties and the Council have decided to keep Saturday and Sunday’s as free as possible to facilitate those occasions. Please contact Jamie to have a look round and make those bookings. The Council asks for payment at the time of booking please as several individuals have not honoured their booking request and staff have turned out unnecessarily.
