Finally, the winter is behind us, and, after spring has been delayed, experts are now suggesting that we should get outdoors and enjoy our gardens and local outside spaces and look out for a riot of colourful plants and shrubs all flowering at once, during a shortened spring period. Apparently by midMay we will move into summer – but I will believe that only when it happens! As the months fly by we once again enter the final term of the school year and move into exam season. Good luck to all those families with children studying hard this May. We have a year of respite this year! No major exams and no dreading the August results day! The June issue will be delivered to you late May. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th May. June is sure to bring lots of summer events, so don’t forget to get the details to me in good time if you have an event to publicise this summer. Thank you. Enjoy May and I will be back in a months’ time with your June magazine.

Best wishes,

With the Club now virtually at full capacity, we recently held our 2nd Annual Club Championships in March. This is a Club-only event and is a great opportunity for all our swimmers, including the under-9s, to compete in a friendly atmosphere. The under-9s swam in 25 m races and the 9s-and-overs swam 50 m and 100 m races. Their times in each event were converted to FINA points – those with the highest points in age categories will receive extra recognition by means of a trophy. With approximately 60 of our swimmers participating it was a hectic but fun evening, which everyone enjoyed. It was also great to hear the feedback from swimmers and parents about how much they had enjoyed the event. By the time this article goes to print, we will have celebrated the success of all the swimmers at a Presentation Evening with awards, trophies, plus speeches and entertainment.

in our next article. If our success so far in 2018 is anything to go by, it will be a fantastic event. You can contact us at bircotesswimmingclub@gmail.com or visit www.bircotesswimmingclub.com

We are a small Club but we have come a long way. The Club is run mostly on a voluntary basis and at the Club Championships we had no less than 20 volunteer parents who helped out in various roles – these are parents who commit regularly by Coaching, being part of the Committee, or as Timekeepers and other poolside RÉ? FLDOV SOXV RWKHU SDUHQWV ZKR VWHSSHG LQ DQG helped out with the multitude of other roles needed to successfully run an event like this. A big thank you to you all for your continued support. After the merriment of the Presentation Evening, it is back to serious training and preparation for the Rotherham Metro gala in mid-May at Ponds Forge. We are looking forward to being able to report on our performance at that gala 8

SCOOP THE POOP The streets are littered with land mines, and not the explosive kind One’s left by mindless dog walkers and the pungent smell they leave behind. It doesn’t take much to scoop the poop, in discrete bags for disposal to a bin To leave the nasties on the walkway, is the walkers ultimate sin. A bit of thought should be given, to the ones who walk the path They don’t want to thrust their foot, into a dogs smelly aftermath. vegetables, pulses, nuts and seeds.

There are some things we can all do to improve our gut health including drinking plenty of fluid and eating fibre.

Adult men should be drinking 2000ml per day and women 1600ml per day.

Fibre is an essential nutrient which adds bulk to your stools and allows your gut to function normally. It also has protective properties, if you eat plenty of fibre you are at a reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes and bowel cancer. The recommended daily intake of Fibre for adults and adolescents is 30g. For children the recommended intake changes as they grow; 2-5 year olds it’s 15g, 5-11 year olds it’s 20g and 11-16 year olds it’s 25g.

drinks all count as fluid. Try to avoid high sugar drinks and alcohol.

If you are planning to increase the fibre in your diet remember to do this gradually to allow your gut to adjust and drink plenty of fluid.

Hi from Mayflower Hopefully the weather will now start to pick up and we can all enjoy the sunshine at long last. I’m going to concentrate on events in this issue and hope you all can at least get to a couple of them to help fill our coffers on all of the events we have planned. Carolyn is arranging another table top sale on the 29the April. There will be lots of bargains to be had so come up to the Sanctuary and enjoy coffee and cake and a good rummage around. She is hoping that this is going to be an ongoing event at the end of every month. If you have any good quality unwanted gifts etc we will be happy if you would donate them to us for her table top sale. We still have a few tickets left for the ball at the Crown on the 18th May. So, if you want to dust off that DJ and ball gown come and join us. Drink on arrival, 3 course meal and coffee. Live auction and raffle. Guitarist Lee Madison will be on hand to play through dinner, then everyone can have fun doing their own thing on the dance floor to the resident DJ and disco. Eastside Magazine will be taking photos and doing a write up on the evening. Tickets are £45 call 07969203206 if you would like to join us. The 13th May sees us in Bawtry Forest on our sponsored dog walk. This starts at 11am and is a truly fantastic event. We love to see all of our dogs that have been adopted coming to join us. You don’t have to have a rescue dog everyone is welcome. There will be coffee and cakes to buy after the walk. We will look forward to seeing you there.

Finding a forever home On Sunday the 1st July we have our annual dog show in Tickhill at Tithes Lane. Again, this starts at 11 am, there are lots of stalls and a BBQ. Also, lots of prizes for waggiest tail, kindest eyes, best in show and lots more. So, bring a rug and enjoy a picnic, we will all keep our fingers crossed for sunshine. Last but not least a thank you to Eaton Electrical systems Ltd. Wheatley Hall Road. Doncaster. They donated lots of goodies, toys food, blankets, towels, and so much more, together with a £600 cheque. Amazing people a huge thank you. Please try and join us for some of our events it will be super to see you. If you are looking for that special pet to join your life please pop to see us at Narrow Lane Bawtry. 01302 711330

Mayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry. Tel 01302 711330

Tabitha has come into care with her buddy, Elphaba, as unfortunately they weren’t getting along with the new baby in the household. They were both rehomed from Mayflower several years ago but have had to be returned. Tabitha has settled better than Elphaba and is usually happy to greet visitors for fusses. She can be very vocal when the mood takes her and purrs like a tractor. A home with Elphaba would be perfect but not essential if the right home came along seperately. Tabitha would be happy in a home with children providing they give her space and time to settle around them. She hasn’t met dogs so we are unsure how she would react. Could you offer this little lady that 2nd chance she deserves?

Name: Louie Male Sex: Age: 18 Months Came into care: June 2017 Good with dogs: Some Good with cats: Not tested Good with children: 14+ Louie loves to go out on adventures and is very good to walk - he happily trots along without a care in the world. He took a while to come out of his shell, but once he trusts you he loves attention and will gladly sit wiht you all day. Due to his nervous nature in the past we are suggesting older children only and a family who will give him time to get to know you. He has a sweet nature and will be a great companion. He tries to be clean in his kennel and once he has a routine this will not be a problem.

FRIENDS OF THE TICKHILL WAR MEMORIAL A group of Residents and Business Owners of Tickhill had an idea to renovate the Tickhill War Memorial in time for Remembrance Day 2018 the acknowledged Armistice of the First World War. Whilst the Memorial is not in too bad a state there is an opportunity to spruce it up as a community asset. There are several hurdles to overcome QRW OHDVW FRQȴ UPLQJ RZQHUVKLS QRZ acknowledged as St Mary’s Church, what can be done and by whom. If this restoration project is to be undertaken it is important that it is done properly and with due respect to those named on the Memorial and residents of Tickhill. Of course any work done will have to be paid for and walking around the Town residents will have no doubt seen collecting tins placed in strategic locations. The plan is to gain a quote from a respective and ICON registered restoration company and then put this out to tender to obtain the right quote but ensure that any work to be carried out will be done properly as we need the restoration to last a number of years. At the time of writing £686 has been raised through these collecting tins and personal donations. The group is also aware that several pledges have been promised which will cover the total cost which is expected to be around £6500. So work is underway and thank you for all your support thus far but if you can please keep donating.

Why you’re NEVER too old to take up yoga. As a yoga teacher in my 66th year, (where on earth did that time go?!), I’ve become even more aware that if I want to keep being able to do all the things I want to do – I need to look after my health. The reality is that for many of us as we age, we not only move less than perhaps we should, but years of poor posture, less than healthy eating habits and the onset of conditions such as arthritis, diabetes or blood pressure to name but a few, start to take their toll. I read somewhere recently – that we humans are living longer – but living sicker. But what is the point of adding another decade to our life span if that life is riddled with pain or health challenges which prevent us from actually living? I know there are some things life throws at us we simply cannot control or predict. But, almost every doctor you speak to, or article you read, or TV programme you watch (and there are plenty these days on TV telling us how to stay younger!) all these sources seem to agree on one thing: our lifestyle has a dramatic impact on how we age. You don’t need me to tell you how important H[HUFLVH LV %XW ¿QGLQJ WKH ULJKW NLQG RI exercise which will support your health and yet be enjoyable enough for you to actually keep it up is not always easy. Yoga is NOT a competitive sport! You work to your own point of challenge – which will be different to everyone else’s – but as you do, you will gradually improve, without strain or injury. 22 TICKHILL TODAY

Yoga encourages you to actually become more aware of your body – and if you’re in the right kind of class, which doesn’t go too fast, gives you time to understand some basic safety principles, you can adjust either deeper into a stretch or pull back – so you get just the right level of challenge for your body. For so many other types of exercise, we are still attached to our phones, watching TV screens or our mind is completely elsewhere - and we don’t realise we’ve done too much till it’s too late. Yoga can help you learn to manage pain or other conditions through breathing and relaxation techniques. LIFTING… It is often with a wry smile that a patient recalls (confesses!) to hurting their back whilst lifting! There are many instances where we all need to lift both at work and in the home. Stay stable Your feet should be apart to give you a stable base and you should endeavour to move your feet during the manoeuvre in order to maintain this stability. 5. Don’t twist Once you are holding the load, move your feet in the direction you want to go rather than twisting the spine 6. Keep it smooth If you are needing to jerk or snatch the load then you haven’t got full control Trust your instincts…if it seems like a bad idea, it probably is! Tickhill Estfeld Visit Colomendy

had a good head for heights and enjoyed a challenge. For the more down to earth there was caving, orienteering and archery, whilst others preferred the raft building activity.

As we returned to school following the Easter break our Year 6 pupils headed off to the Kingswood Centre at Colomendy, North Wales for a week of challenge and adventure. It was a typical week in Wales – that beautiful green and lush landscape requires a lot of rain to maintain it, but the weather didn’t dampen the spirits or the enjoyment of the group.

Throughout the week the pupils needed to work together in pairs or as a team and this was something which they did very well, encouraging each other and congratulating their friends’ achievements. The pupils took the opportunity to try new experiences and for some the events were outside of their comfort zones. It took real courage and determination to try something new and challenging. Well done to them all for being resilient, for persevering and for making the most of the opportunities on offer.

On the outbound journey the party visited the Imperial War Museum North at Manchester. The pupils found the interactive displays and hourly media shows interesting as they brought to life their work on the Second World War. The museum is exceptionally good for all age groups and well worth a visit. The party then continued their journey to the Kingswood Centre. The Colomendy centre is perfect for thrill seekers, and is surrounded by rolling hills and natural woodlands, which are home to a variety of wildlife. During their time at Kingswood our pupils enjoyed climbing and abseiling amongst the treetops, hurtling through the air on the zip-wire and taking the leap of faith. What is the evidence of being a Christian? Dear Friends,

I decided to undertake a lent course in March as part of my sabbatical project. I joined a group that discussed a book written by Peter Hollins entitled, “The RUWKRGR[ KHUHWLF DQG RWKHU LPSRVVLEOH WDOHVČ‹ :H GLVFXVVHG RQO\ Č´ YH FKDSWHUV RI WKH WKLUW\ three and they were very challenging. In order to have a taste of the context of the material, I decided to procure the book and read it by P\VHOI Ζ IRXQG RXW WKDW WKH Č´ UVW FKDSWHU ZKLFK we did not discuss, very thought provoking. It puts the question, “if Christianity were illegal, ZRXOG WKHUH EH HQRXJK HYLGHQFH WR FRQYLFW \RX"Č‹ Thinking through the question reminds me of some Christians in other parts of the world where even some of their family members are giving up their relations to be prosecuted and even killed for being Christians. I wonder what the criteria would be to convict you as a Christian if you found yourself in a similar situation. The question of faith is often put to us when ZH Č´ OO IRUPV LQ GLÎ? HUHQW DVSHFWV RI OLIH Č‚ MRE DSSOLFDWLRQV SHQVLRQ EHQHČ´ WV FHQVXV DQG VR on. I wonder if you really mean what you put on the paper – Christian. What about when you

have a conversation and the issue of faith creeps up? I wonder whether you brush it aside or you are bold enough to talk about what makes you tick as a follower of Jesus. If you talk about your life as a Christian, is it because to you it is an imagination as a belief system or a mere tradition? For me, the evidence of being a Christian is UHČľ HFWHG LQ OLYLQJ D OLIH WKDW UHČľ HFWV WKH ORYH of Jesus. As Rollins puts it, it is “giving a voice to the voiceless, a place to the displaced, and standing up against the oppression SHUSHWUDWHG E\ WKRVH LQ SRZHUČ‹ I wonder if can remind you that people encounter the presence of Christ in the lives of those who live out the way of Christ. Christ demonstrated a life of joyful simplicity, radical healing, and unimaginable love. This month, I wonder if I can suggest to you to live your life as being convicted as a Christian. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

Probus PROBUS meets in the TAVERN on Northgate in Tickhill. Meetings start at 10.00 for 10.30. On 22nd March, Members entertained their partners at the Ladies’ Lunch at the Styrrup Golf Club and invited the widows of former Probus members. A jolly time was had by all, much enjoyed by the lady guests. On 12th April, Graham Wilburn gave a very interesting talk about the Doncaster Royal Engineers and their little recognised role in the Battle of Lys on the French/Belgian border 100 years ago to the day. Graham’s grandfather was there but had spoken little of the events. Our next meetings are:26th April – Ian Morgan will talk about the curious world of olde time punishments. 10th May – John Hoare will give a talk on British Inland Waterways 24th May – Professor Charles Stirling will talk about Napoleon’s Buttons – an appreciation of science New members are always welcome from Tickhill, Bawtry and the surrounding areas.

NEWS FROM THE EAST NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICE INSPECTOR Dear Readers, I begin this month’s article with a brief resume of the main crimes of interest which have occurred in Tickhill and the surrounding villages between 8th March and 12th April, and take the opportunity to RÎ? Please note the crimes I have mentioned below GR QRW UHČľ HFW DOO FULPH ZKLFK KDV WDNHQ SODFH EXW are those which I believe will be of more interest to readers. To begin with, we have recorded just one residential burglary in Tickhill, but in this incident, the vehicle keys were also stolen and the car taken. However, we also recorded four commercial burglaries where premises were attacked on Castlegate and Market Place. Furthermore, we recorded one theft from a car, where the number plates were stolen and two attempt thefts from cars. Again, in one of these FDVHV WKH RÎ? Another reminder to sign up to SYP alerts by registering via www.sypalerts.co.uk. This enables you to have access to a fully personalised messaging service about policing matters in South Yorkshire. All of this is done through our secure servers and registering is free, simple and easy - just use the simple sign up feature on the home page.

We can all implement crime prevention methods to reduce our chances of becoming a victim of crime, such as double checking that your car is locked, don’t leave valuables in it, but if you have to, conceal them in the boot or glove box. Make sure your house doors and windows are locked, even when you are in the house, and don’t forget you can mark your valuable items of property with u.v marker pens. We often recover suspected stolen property but cannot trace the owner because it is not marked in any way.

This will be an evening meeting starting around 6.30 – 7.00pm and held locally to give local residents the opportunity to meet me and raise any issues or concerns you may have. Some readers may recall we held this type of meeting several years ago, but with the re-introduction of Neighbourhood Teams across South Yorkshire, it is now a good time to try and re-invigorate this type of meeting. I will keep you informed of developments but refer you to our Facebook page, website and SYP alerts for more information.

In terms of anti social behaviour, there is very little to report, with only a handful of incidents reported

Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir Calling all men, of any age, race, colour or creed from around the area! Come along and enjoy the camaraderie of singing in a four part choir (Bass, Baritone & 2 Tenor parts). There is proven evidence that singing regularly can improve your health and wellbeing. All prospective new members are most welcome to attend our rehearsals which are held each Monday evening in the Schoolroom to the rear of the Methodist Church, Northgate, Tickhill from 7.30 to 9.30 pm. Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - May 2018

Mayors Report for 2017-2018 Summary

to continue to have regular bookings despite a small increase on the hourly hire fee.

Neighbourhood Plan The Neighbourhood Plan and the issues related thereto continues to take up much of the time for all Councilors who this year have also been working on the housing needs survey. This is the result of DMBC announcing the possibility of 165 houses being built potentially impacting both on possible infill and, indeed our Green Belt. Tickhill Town Council wishes to ensure the residents of Tickhill, get what they need, not simply accept what DMBC or any developer propose.

The Council’s existing finances are no longer sufficient to meet current and future commitments, and therefore it has been necessary to increase the precept.

Finance Prudent control has continued to be exercised over the Council’s finances with small savings made in many areas of budgeted expenditure, but due to the levy of DMBC of back dated business taxes not only on the Pavilion (which is a not a for profit letting environment) and the free car park, Tickhill Town Council finds themselves in a situation where the reserves have been heavily depleted. The plumbing to the pavilion has at last been upgraded to comply with the need for Legionella testing and the Buttercross has been repaired. Also, CCTV has been installed at the Pavilion in the hope of combatting antisocial behavior. All necessary expenditure but with an inevitable cost to the electorate. Lettings have stabilised at the Pavilion and we hope 70 TICKHILL TODAY

STAFFING This year we have witnessed a few changes with the caretakers and Pavilion Managers, and we now welcome Mark to the fold as temporary Pavilion Manger. The Clerk has continued to give her fullest support but will be retiring from the position of Clerk by the end of the calendar year but retaining the role of Responsible Financial Officer. The council will look to employ a clerk designate from May with a gradual, systematic handover of the role of clerk to that of Clerk and Pavilion Manager. The position will be advertised in the forthcoming month. Neighbourhood Management Team. Richard Marshall continues to cover our area and does so with the utmost diligence and his time is split with other areas when required. Neighbourhood management is now more hands on within the community, something Tickhill has been able to achieve. A big thank you is to be extended to Richard for his continued hard work and dedication. We will endeavor on our part to keep up communications and work with the very much, although reduced,

successful and committed team. We give them our full support. Traffic and Parking We have at last seen the introduction of the 20mph speed zone at St Mary’s school and Estfeld school areas, but drivers seem to disregard the need for consideration when dropping their children off at school. Other areas still leave a lot to be desired, but the council will keep pushing for improvement. Parking on pavements and grass verges is a problem and we continually seek a solution. Christmas As usual our Christmas festivities in the Town were a huge success and late night shopping proved to be its usual hit! Our annual Carol service was well attended with numbers increasing; we hope it will continue to go from strength to strength. The new Carol sheets were provided with support from a private donation from a local church. However, as the demand for Council support to so many initiatives by other grants and donations this will not be available in the next financial year. Planning Planning can be contentious, but our Neighbourhood plan continues to play an important part in our considerations. This enabling legislation has given us the power to decide the destiny of our own small Town but still needs the consent of DMBC who are however obliged to take our views into account! Community reminded of the opportunity to attend council meetings and inform the council of any developments which they may not approve of or even wish to support. Tfest/Tickhill Together Tfest was a very successful event and has put Tickhill on the map again this past year. A big thank you is to be extended to all the organisers who have given up their time and effort to stage this wonderful event. Tickhill Together continue to thrive as a group giving us late night shopping, The Scarecrow festival and the 1940’s Day. A big thank you to all involved. Youth Hub. Thanks are to be extended to all those concerned for the forming of a Youth Hub which in turn has revitalized the what was known as the Institute. The newly named Tavern has provided a new venue and it is with the Tickhill Town Council’s blessing that it continues to thrive. Website Five years ago, we introduced our first ever website. The resignation of Councilor Keith has provided the need to reflect on the best use for such a tool and now the council must look at what alternatives there may be. The old website could be difficult to update but published the minutes of the Council meetings, planning information etc., and it is the Council’s intention the council to address the situation {as soon as possible.} Tickhill in Bloom The Tickhill in Bloom Group continue to give us delightful flower beds throughout the year and we must give a special thanks to the group. It is hoped they can continue with their sterling work. This year sees the award of the Silver Gilt. Thank you, Gillian, Margaret M and all the dedicated team you keep our Town looking lovely! Litter Picker The Volunteer Litter Picker has now been picking litter for almost 5 years.

Thank you to Councilor Cannings for all his hard work and his continued dedication to the “Cause”. Awards This year the Community Award was received by Karen Holmes for her work at The Hub and Young Person of the Year Award was received by two persons Sian Howells-White and Ella Ward. The Alison Award for 11-25yr olds for Achievement was given to Charlotte Mickley. Well done all, your achievements and dedication are very much appreciated. A special Mayor’s award was introduced this year and was given to Lesley Nicholson for her sterling work at the Community library. The Awards were made in December at the Mayors Reception; the afternoon was a huge success and was attended by Caroline Flint. Thanks I must thank all my Councillor colleagues and our indefatigable Clerk for their advice, expertise and continued commitment to the community over the last year. We could not possibly exist without them. All Councillors carry out their duties to their fullest potential and without remuneration or expenses, so thank you all. We also thank our Borough Councilors for their continued commitment to our community. Our staff at the Pavilion, as ever, have played a major role this year with their hard work and co-operation. It is not the easiest of work but fulfills a vital role in the community. Huge thanks to Andrea, Gillian and Sharon and Mark. Finally I would also like to thank all residents who support the Council in so many different ways - particularly the members of the Advisory Committee – and to all those who contribute to our meetings and surveys.
