Welcome to

the MAY 2014 edition

“So many books, so little time.” Frank Zappa Last month I talked about reading, and I am really hoping that by the time you read this I will have managed to polish off a book or three from my ‘want to read’ list. I am writing this, only days after you received your last magazine, however, all being well you will be receiving this shortly after I return from a few days of Easter sunshine. A lazy trip is planned, with plenty of time for reading and generally relaxing – not that I shall be allowing my eldest to do too much relaxing, I’m afraid he will taking very different books with him, as he heads ever closer to impending GCSE exams! As always we welcome several new advertisers to the magazine this month, it must be the time of year that attracts lots of businesses to promote themselves. Whether contacting advertisers old or new please don’t forget to say where you saw their advert! The June issues will be delivered to you late May – around the time of the Bank holiday. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 9th May.

Enjoy April and I will back in a months’ time with your May magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Bawtry Phoenix Theatre presents... Life and Beth, A Comedy Drama by Alan Ayckbourn. 17th - 24th May 2014 It's Christmas and Beth is mourning the recent death of her health and safety officer husband, Gordon. Her son Martin has come to stay and so has Connie, her sister in law. They are both determined that Beth has a stress free Christmas. But between Connie's drinking problem and Martin's unspeaking and emotionally volatile girlfriend, their intentions prove to be short lived. Only David, the local vicar provides Beth with any comfort, but when he says a prayer for her bereavement, he unwittingly summons Gordon's ghost to return.

Charity Appeals For

‘Hosts With The Most’ To Help Transform The Lives Of Lonely Elderly People In Doncaster Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is appealing for volunteers in Doncaster willing to welcome a small group into their home for a tea party, just one or two afternoons a year. The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities. Each older guest is taken to the volunteer host’s home by a volunteer driver, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship for a couple of hours. The monthly gatherings exist as a vital lifeline of friendship for the charity’s older guests, however, the regular outings for the popular group in Doncaster are currently under threat due to a lack of volunteers able to host the tea parties. Contact the Elderly’s North and Midlands Executive Officer, Mary Robinson, said: “The charity is committed to offering a lifeline of friendship to the oldest and loneliest people, but this lifeline in Doncaster is currently under threat due to a real shortage of volunteer hosts in the area. Being a host requires a commitment of just a couple of hours, once or twice a year, and anyone who has a downstairs toilet, easy access to their home and a decent sized teapot is eligible! Our volunteers genuinely get as much out of the experience as our older guests, so I’m calling for anyone who is interested in giving something back to their community to please get in touch with me as soon as possible.” T 6

Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan The series of summaries continues this month with a look at the HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT. The success of the Tickhill Local History Society and its series of meetings and publications is testament to the great interest in the parish in conserving and enhancing for future generations the best of our history. Every consultation exercise we have conducted has shown that there is a unanimous wish for regular public access to the CASTLE. Over many years Philip Mottram and others have worked hard to have the castle opened up, even involving our MP in the campaign. Unfortunately the terms of the lease

granted by the Duchy of Lancaster, which owns the castle, have so far frustrated all efforts. When we sent the draft of the Neighbourhood Plan to English Heritage, they made helpful suggestions and will assist the Town Council in trying to make what is potentially a huge visitor attraction, and therefore a boost to the prosperity of the town, more accessible. The NP itself will reinforce the protection in planning of the 117 listed buildings in the parish, whether within or outside the Conservation Area, as well as the whole environment of the Conservation Area. Where there are

planning applications, there could, for example, be an opportunity to improve facades which some regard as inappropriate to the age of a building. Thus the Plan will support ‘proposals to maintain, conserve and, where appropriate, improve’ all the historic assets of the town. We are also committed to working with the Local History Society to develop tourist information, appropriate signage and information boards, a history trail and other material which promotes the enjoyment of the town’s rich history. Tickhill Methodist Ladies' Fellowship We have welcomed one or two new members recently which has been very nice, and we have been pleased to see one or two people back with us who had had to miss meetings due to family commitments. Our first meeting in May will be on Tuesday 13th, when it will be a Members’ afternoon and the subject will be Weddings. Then on Tuesday May 27th the speaker will be John Hoare and his subject will be London. Both meetings will begin at 2.30pm.

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery (Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.) YCA Twenty-three members of our branch are going to attend the Annual General Meeting of the YCA at Askham Bryan on May 16th. There is a good speaker booked for the afternoon so this should be very enjoyable. The next branch meeting will be on Thursday May 8th when Sue Clifton is coming to give an illustrated talk about Papua New Guinea. This will be at 7.30pm in the Methodist School-room. Marcia J Lingard [ Secretary ] T

HAIL, HAYDN! Saturday 17th May at 7.30 pm Doncaster Choral Society will be performing his famous and much loved NELSON MASS and the offertory INSANAE ET VANAE CURAE under the baton of Conductor Simon Lindley. There will also be two motets by MOZART: AVE VERUM CORPUS and SPLENDENTE TE, DEUS. Principals of the National Festival Orchestra with soloists; Sarah Potter-Kathryn Woodruff-Christopher TrentholmeThomas Asher.

The overall figures showed that 89% of all patient ratings at the Colliery Surgery were good, very good or excellent and at the Tickhill Surgery it was 88%. The full results can be seen on the practice website or in the surgery waiting room. However, only patients who attend an appointment during the survey period are eligible to complete one of the forms. In October 2013 97 patients from the Colliery Surgery provided feedback and 121 from the Tickhill Surgery. As there are 9,200 patients registered with the practice this means only 2.36% of people have had the opportunity to express their views. As all patient’s opinions are important. We want to enable everyone to give us their thoughts. With this in mind “contact us“ forms are now available in both surgeries. By completing one of these it enables patients to ask questions, provide feedback and make suggestions. When completed these can be posted in the Comments Box at either surgery. Or why not email us at tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo.com We will also be canvassing your views at our events, open meetings, galas and flu clinics. Secondly a big thank you to Graham Daniel the practice manager who retired at the end of February. He together with Dr David Fearns and Mrs Julie Dodd the Deputy Practice Manager, were the key figures in establishing a Patients Group and it was their hard work and dedication in ensuring that the patients group was kept informed and linked to other agencies that has given us, the patients, a real chance to ensure our voices are heard. A big welcome to the new Practice Manager Mr Russell Gardner who started mid March. We hope he has a long and enjoyable relationship with the practice and patients.

The concert will be held at Priory Place Methodist Church, Doncaster and tickets (£12, concessions £10, school pupils Jan Hart (Secretary) FREE) can be obtained by Tel 01302 840728 or at Tourist Norma Carr (Chair) T Information, High St, Doncaster Tel 01302 734309 T 10 TICKHILL TODAY TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278 | www.facebook.com/todaymags

MARCH MUSIC.

For their March concert Tickhill Music Society presented the audience with a carefully balanced programme of string quartets played by the splendid Villiers Quartet. The concert began with the first of Haydn’s last two quartets. Although by this time Haydn was getting old and frail he had reached the pinnacle of his chamber music writing career. He had been commissioned to write the traditional set of six but only completed two. The first, Op 77 No.1 in G major, is a sparkling work and from the crisp opening chords it was clear that the audience was to be treated to some fine music making. From the march rhythm of the opening movement to the sprightly Presto of the finale the Villiers gave us a satisfying opening to the evenings music. The Quartet No. 5 by the American composer Philip Glass was a sharp contrast. It has five movements played without any breaks and captured the spirit of New York, ‘the city

Soul and Motown Night

that never sleeps’. Particularly impressive was the powerful mechanical drive of the second movement dominated by the relentless pounding of the cello. The final work after the interval was Elgar’s Quartet in E minor, Op 83, a late work not often heard these days. The second movement is labelled ‘piacevole’ which means ‘pleasantly easy’. The piece displayed all the characteristics of Elgar’s style and made a fitting conclusion to a thoroughly enjoyable concert. The incisive precision and sensitive musicality of the Villiers Quartet produced another triumph for Tickhill Music Society. Philip Mottram T

Garden View

A Thorny Issue Whatever your opinion of roses, there’s no denying that this flower is the epitome of traditional English gardening, and maybe for some that’s just the problem. For some people the memories of insipid flowers sitting above leggy stalks and diseased leaves is enough to put them off ever planting another rose bush again. Classified as a woody perennial, with over a hundred species it is still by far one of Britain’s favourite plants. Native to China, the humble rose grows well in our climate, where the cool moist winters and warm (ish) summers mean that as long as we don’t experience too much rain (which can cause petals to fuse together before fully opening) plants should live happily for many years. That said they are not ‘forever plants’ and should not be held on to for sentimental reasons. I’ve removed no end of beds planted up in the 60’s with nothing more than clumps of baked clay soil as their companion. Roses are best planted bare root between November and February but are most often purchased containerised when in flower during the summer months. If well watered in their first year, roses planted this way should establish well. Plant slightly deeper than you think you 14

TICKHILL TODAY

need, burying the graft (woody knuckle) fractionally below the soil. Humans are not the only admirers of roses and they can suffer from numerous pests and diseases so prepare yourself for battle. Problems include; brown scale, rose aphids, rose leaf-rolling sawfly, rose dieback, rose powdery mildew, rose blackspot and rose rust. That said there are disease-resistant varieties, and prevention is always better than cure. If planted in good soil (they don’t mind heavy clay) and in a well prepared hole with some homemade compost or manure, then fed in March with a special rose fertiliser before another layer of compost or manure is placed on top, and watered well they will provide you with a long lasting combination of colour and scent. For added interest, why not grow two varieties together which complement each other, or flower at different times for lengthier impact. On a sunny wall try; Rosa ‘Blush Noisette’, a great repeat flowerer with small double pink flowers, ‘Lady Waterlow’ for silky pink blooms and healthy foliage, ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ for exquisite scent, or ‘Etoile de Hollande’ for a splash of rich scarlet red. Ground cover roses such as the ‘flower carpet range’ are great for

covering banks and are extremely low maintenance, or try an avenue of standard roses such as ‘Winchester Cathedral’ which look fabulous when under planted with lavender or lush low growing evergreens. Finally for a wonderful thornless variety try Rosa ‘Mortimer Sackler’.

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee .

Gala News Many people don’t realise that the money raised from the Gala is solely for the maintenance of the Scout and Guide HQ on St. Mary’s Road. It doesn’t buy camping equipment or disappear into some central Scout and Guide Fund; it pays the bills and fixes the roof! Without the Gala it would be impossible to keep the building open.

The Great Tickhill Bake-Off Application forms for the Great Tickhill Bake-Off are now available by e-mailing tickhillgala@yahoo.co.uk and to download from the Tickhill Gala page on Facebook. They will also be available in the town over the next few weeks. One sandwich cake or 5 cup cakes per entry, decorated on the theme of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. The two classes are 16 and under and adult. All the rules are on the application form.

Calling All Performers!

The Attractions so far We have just heard the Sheffield’s Green Top Circus will be joining us at the Gala and holding drop-in sessions. Military Fitness Training will be hosting assault course races in the main ring, followed by an open session where the course will be open to all-comers. RLC Rockets Cheerleading Squad will also be performing in the main ring and holding cheerleader try-outs on their stand. Most of the food related stalls will be by the pavilion, where we will be providing a large seating area with tables, as well as extra toilet facilities!

There are still stalls available in the Food Zone and on the field, contact us for more details. e-mail : tickhillgala@yahoo.co.uk telephone: 01302 742415mobile: 07599 420033 visit our Tickhill Gala page on Facebook

There will be a live performance area in the Food Zone. If you would like to take part, please get in touch.

Do you suffer with headaches unnecessarily?

Headaches are something most of us are familiar with – whether it’s the occasional alcohol induced fog or a more debilitating weekly occurrence. But did you know that problems in the neck are estimated to be the cause of headaches in 18% of the population? (Other causes include migraine, cluster headaches, tension headaches and serious pathology). Stiffness in the joints and tissues of the spine can cause headaches with the patient typically experiencing a dull ache or boring pain on one or both sides of the head or face. Accompanying symptoms can include nausea, blurred vision, dizziness or light-headedness. These headaches may be occasional or frequent and can last from a few hours to a few days. Patients (more often female than male) usually have a long history of headaches and may have visited their GP many times over the years. Symptomatic treatment using painkillers is often unsatisfactory in the long term. If you have headaches like this, it could be that the root cause of the problem is in the neck. An appointment with a physiotherapist would enable them to assess and test your neck to establish the presence of any movement dysfunction in the spine which could then be corrected with appropriate manual therapy techniques, exercise and advice. Meanwhile, keep your neck healthy by checking your posture, taking regular breaks from any activity where your neck is held in one position, relaxing if you are prone to stress to reduce tension across your shoulders and avoiding using too many pillows in bed.

News from...

Voglia

d’Italia Crime figures across the area are generally looking good year on year. However, the most concerning area of crime at the minute is vehicle crime, particularly theft from vehicles. I cannot stress enough the importance of not leaving anything on show. Even the sight of a small amount of change left on show will give some criminals enough motive to put a window through. Do not leave empty carrier bags, or ones containing nothing but rubbish on show. They do not know that they contain nothing of value, and will want to have a look to check. Some people decide to leave their cars unlocked to avoid having a window put through, but this is not the answer. The majority of criminals are opportunists, and will try every car door on a street and search them if unlocked, whether there is anything on view or not. Please follow the above advice, and most importantly report anything suspicious. If there is someone acting suspiciously, this is usually for a reason, so do not think that someone else will ring. Even if we do not catch them with anything on them, if they keep getting reported and stopped by us, they will think twice about returning to the same area again. Call South Yorkshire Police on 101, or 999 in an emergency. Alternatively, report through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or via their website. T

Year 5 Win the Swimming Gala! On the 2nd of April 2014 Year 5 visited Sir Thomas Wharton for our first ever swimming gala. All the team performed to their highest ability, and we also were also on our best behaviour.

HOW WE DID: The first race was breaststroke and what a close race it was! To start with Olivia brilliantly came 1st in her heat and 2nd overall. Next was Seb's race, boys breaststroke, he managed to come 1st in his heat and 2nd overall as well! The next race was backstroke. To start with Narin did a push off which went over halfway! She then went on to win overall. Next up was Camran he also set off with a fab push off, he managed to win by a couple of metres! After that was front crawl and Henry was up feeling the pressure! Henry came first in his heat and 2nd overall! He was very happy with his result! Narin was the girl to do front crawl she won comfortably and confidently! She came first once again and got another medal. For the girls relay they came 3rd trying their best. The team was made up of Narin, Chloe and Olivia For the boys they were very close to 1st but just missed out and they were still happy with 2nd. The team was made up of James, Henry, Mack and Camran. Finally it was the widths! Thomas did front crawl and came 2nd in his heat! Also Jess came 2nd in her heat. Next was the backstroke, Montana and Jack competed in this race it was a great race Montana came 2nd in her heat and Jack came 2nd in his as well.

YEAR 5 & 6 TRY SWORD DANCING The pupils not competing in the football or netball teams recently got to try Sword Dancing. The dancing was led by Debbie Williams and Paul Davenport from Maltby Phoenix Sword Dancers. At first we all got a bit worried (especially the teachers!) because we thought we were going to use real swords. We actually used practice swords made of wood (just in case we hurt ourselves). Instead of dancing individually we were surprised how much we had to rely on our team. If we worked together we achieved amazing patterns and routines. Most of us liked the star pattern out of the many we learnt. The hardest was the double unders. The easiest to learn was the Star. Did you know, sword dancing goes back hundreds of years to the blessing of the plough which takes place in January on Plough Sunday? We would like to thank Debbie and Paul for the whole experience and really wish we could do it again! By Giovanni and Jessica Y5

As you can see although we tried really hard, we did not always secure first place and therefore you can imagine our surprise when we came first overall! By James Eaton, Mack Warne and Camran Cassar. 34

St Mary’s have a new Music Room! Thanks to generous donations from both Tickhill Lions and Spar Supermarket, together with the hard work of several volunteers, a little used office room has been transformed into a new music room. The transformation took place during a ‘volunteer weekend’ earlier this term and involved staff, governors and parents. With help from the PTA, new instruments have also been purchased. The room gets a big ‘thumbs up’ from the children. We have several other projects in school, both large and small and inside and outside. If any volunteers are interested in helping us please contact the school for details. Thank you.

community There’s Nothing Like a Good Book at Bedtime

Reading is fun at Estfeld

During this half term we have been promoting reading and “reading for pleasure” in school. Reading is an essential life skill, but as with learning any skill, making it fun and pleasurable usually helps those learning to persevere and achieve success. March was certainly the month for bookworms at Estfeld Primary School as during the first four weeks of the half term the school held four fabulous reading events.

Extreme Reading Challenge The first event was an Extreme Reading Challenge to all of the pupils, parents and staff. They were challenged to ask somebody to take a photograph of them reading in an unusual setting. The response was tremendous and the reading venues were certainly unusual. Following the half term break the school hall was adorned with pupils reading on horseback, from the dentist’s chair, outside Buckingham Palace, skiing on the piste, on a trampoline, to name but a few; all of the 125 pupils who submitted an entry certainly looked as if they were having fun. We were overwhelmed by the response and applaud the imaginations and effort of all of the pupils, parents and staff that participated. All classes received a book token as a reward so that they could select some new books for their class book trolley. Well done.

On Tuesday 18th March we held our first ever Bedtime Story Event. After a busy day at school our Reception and Key Stage 1 pupils went home as usual, but as bedtime approached they returned to school dressed in pyjamas and dressing gowns for their bedtime story. They were delighted to hear their storytellers reading to them in classrooms that had been transformed with into calm, relaxing and comfortable places, with the help of cushions and soft lighting. After several stories and some hot chocolate the children returned home sleepy-eyed and ready for bed – indeed some had already nodded off. We know that everybody, pupils, staff and parents, enjoyed the evening and hope that it has encouraged everybody to read more often, perhaps even every night before bedtime at home.

An Author Came to Call - John Mallam On Friday 28th March we were delighted to welcome John Mallam to school. John is a British historian, archaeologist, and author of children’s non-fiction books. We often know the names of the authors of fiction books, but it is more unusual to be familiar with the work of a non-fiction author. As it turned out our pupils recognised many of the titles that John has written as some are already available on the bookshelves in school, whilst some pupils realised that they already owned one of his books. During the day John worked with all of the pupils in school and hopefully the workshops have inspired them to read more non-fiction books, or indeed write a book of their own.

Thank you Thank you to all who were involved in the events, pupils, parents and staff, all of whom gave up their own time to support them – we couldn’t do it without you! And finally a special mention for Mrs Martin who organised all of the reading events; thank you for having the foresight to plan and organise such exciting and original events – and for helping us all to experience the pleasure that reading can bring.

Paired Reading for World Book Day A regular event at school, paired reading is certainly something that our pupils enjoy. Each pupil in school has a reading partner in another class with whom they share a book or two. The youngest pupils enjoy reading with an older child, listening to a story and perhaps getting a little help with those tricky words, whilst the older pupils enjoy being the expert for the session; helping someone always makes them feel good! 38

Our March meeting attracted another excellent attendance for a really enjoyable evening with Sarah Hopps, broadcaster, journalist and gardener discussing the plants in ‘A Sensory Garden’ to activate our bodily senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste and the very important smell. The May meeting on Thursday 29th will see the return of Gail Summerfield from Westshores Nurseries, Winterton, who was with us in October 2008, talking about ‘The Twilight Garden’. There will be plants for sale and members are reminded that we have a ‘Bring and Buy’ table at the May meeting each year. The meeting will be held in the Methodist

Schoolroom starting at 7.15pm. Visitors welcome (£3) The Society has made a donation of £100 to Tickhill in Bloom towards the cost of displays at the Buttercross this summer.

Plant Sale On Friday 23rd May there will be a plant sale at the home of our chairman Ray Hill at 2, Pinfold Lane with proceeds being donated to the Methodist Church and Charities. Opening hours 10am – 12noon, 2pm – 4pm and 6pm – 8pm. A good range of vegetable and bedding plants available. Phil Thomas T

Tickhill Juniors Tickhill Juniors were very kindly donated a Portakabin by TRENT REFRACTORIES back in Dec 2013. This was located in Scunthorpe, and due to the kind generosity of J P WALTON Transport this was moved to our ground at Friars Lane in March so renovations could begin. With the invaluable input of members of Tickhill Community this project is looking to be completed ready for our opening day on Saturday 10th May at 10am. Rainbow Cars kindly donated paint for the exterior, J P WALTON transported the Kabin, St Marys School donated Table & Chairs, Melony Maison (Melanie Wilson) is decorating all the tables. We acquired a kitchen from a local resident, a local steel firm has provided metal grilles and a step, a local flooring firm has provided flooring and Taylors of Tickhill will be our main supplier. So through the whole village coming together it has given the local kids football team a much needed Tuck Shop. I would like to say THANK YOU and invite you all along to our official opening on 10th May at 10am No Football Connection is needed, so come and have a drink and a chat and see this fabulous community led project in action, run solely by volunteers for the good of Tickhill Juniors.

community We have a couple of great events this month from The People-For you. Nottingham Playhouse are touring a WW1 commemorative play – The Second Minute –and the Donni Folk Festival with some great musicians playing in the Town. Many people’s image of folk music is a bearded old guy with his finger in his ear. This is folk music, but not exclusively. Fantastic harmony singing and rousing sea shanties I do love, but it is a broad church of brilliant musicianship and socialist lyrics and sometimes electric guitars. There is no such thing as a fascist folk singer – as the genre’s name declares it is music of Folk, of ordinary working people, those who tramped the Derbyshire hills for the rightto-roam or who were pressed into service . If you only see Chris Wood to hear his song of the murder of Jean Charles de-Menezes you will have spent your money well.

Village Ventures this month presents: Nottingham Playhouse are touring their play The Second Minute round Nottinghamshire this month and it will be playing at Bircotes Town Hall on Sunday 11 May at 7.30. To mark the centenary of the WW1 and based upon the archive letter collection of the Sherwood Foresters regiment, this poignant and uplifting production weaves together heroic comic and heartbreaking tales of soldiers and families through their own words. In doing so the play explores how this most elemental and vanishing form of communication managed to hold the country together whilst a generation of men was being destroyed. tickets: 010320 752642 or call into the Hall £8/£4 child/ £18 family ticket www. villageventures.org.uk T

TICKHILL PARISH ROOM - looking forward! Although Tickhill Parish Room is an ancient building, we are conscious that it needs to be fully up to date to compete in this day and age. So ..... wifi is coming! We are well on the way to raising the necessary funds to install this modern technology. It has not been easy! The first thing we realised was that we actually don't have a telephone line installed in our lovely building - this has to be 'put right' first - then we are on the way. Watch out for publicity and information on this great modern event, and come down so you too can combine the old (very) and the new!! Asides from that excitement May is a busy month again. We kick off at 10am on the 1st of May with Hartbeeps. Natalie runs two classes for babies on to toddlers and pre-school age children, every Thursday morning. If you are interested in joining in with your baby, please ring Natalie on 07966 891008. These classes are a lovely introduction the musical interaction for babies and young children. Slimming world continues with two classes also, 5.30pm and 7.30pm on Thursdays (contact Chris on 07825 686437 for further details). On the 5th May (Bank Holiday Monday) Michelle Andrews is holding a very interesting event - Pottery Painting. You can come along and paint your chosen items. These vary from ordinary household crockery - which you make into something really special with your own design, and money boxes and pottery animals! Information from Michelle on 07803 360885. From 10am. - 4pm. Yoga continues on Tuesday evenings with Sian at 7.15pm. A lovely way to relax and wind down. Check with Sian for class details on 07901 975064. On Wednesday 7th May Breakthrough Breast Cancer are holding a Coffee Morning, from 10am Please come and support this worthy event. There will be lovely cakes and buns for sale, plus a raffle and tombola. Further information from Eluned on 01302 742963. On Saturday 10th May there will be another Prayer Breakfast. Contact John Marsden on 01302 744142. Our regular Saturday Coffee Morning follows the Prayer Breakfast at 10am. Mothers Union have an Afternoon Tea planned for the 21st May. This is in aid of AFIA which is raising money to send needy families to the seaside for much needed holidays. A fabulous spread is promised! Tickets are ÂŁ4 which you can buy in advance from Eluned (742963) or pay on the door.

. . . but not TODAY

At our meeting on March 20th Colin Bycroft gave an interesting talk about “The Vanishing Streets of Doncaster”. It made you think about how much of central Doncaster was demolished and rebuilt in the years of post war modernisation (with some of the “modernised” areas now being rebuilt) compared with Tickhill which has been developed leaving many of its older features intact or sympathetically restored. We are very lucky to live where we do. Thank you Colin for a nostalgic and thought provoking talk. On another subject, did you know that Tickhill once had its own 52

postmark? In fact it had several postmarks between 1840 and approximately 1960. Initially the postmark (intended to prevent re use of postage stamps) was applied at Tickhill post office but in 1858 the job was transferred to the Head Post office in Rotherham and later in 1937 to Doncaster. This information came from documents provided by Ken Kimberley as part of the research for our new book “Tickhill – discover the past” to be published in September. We are very grateful to Ken and to all the research team whose work is now nearly complete.

Tickhill & District

local History Society Our next meeting (the last of the 2013/14 winter season) will be on Thursday May 15th when Malcolm Johnson will talk on “Raising the 5th Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry”. The KOYLI is a regiment which can be traced back (with several name changes) to 1755 although the 5th Battalion was not formed until 1908. Active in such a turbulent century this talk is of particular interest as we remember the start of WW1 a century ago. As usual the talk will be in the Methodist Schoolroom, Northgate starting at 7.30 pm (doors open 7.00pm) and visitors will be welcome. And finally! Look out for news of our summer activities in the June edition of “Tickhill Today “

The next stage of refurbishment will be the shower areas but this will require some very careful consideration and planning. As you read this we will have held the public meeting on the running of the library by a volunteer group and hopefully will be well on the way to forming this group. Tickhill Town Council has been working endlessly to ensure the future of the library but legally and financially cannot take it over, but will offer support in whatever way we can. Did you know in England alone we spend one billion pound of taxpayers’ money picking up litter, money that could pay for care workers, libraries and nurses. Although we mention it regularly it is serious when it takes a month for a paper bag to disappear, 8 weeks for orange skins and banana skins, two years for a cigarette end, 18months to 500years for a plastic bag, 10 to 20 yrs for plastic bottles and 54

facts therefore leaving a lot of our litter for our children and grandchildren to inherit. We are lucky in Tickhill with our own volunteer litter picker, and a comment made to me recently was “You must be proud of your Town it is a lovely place, clean and tidy”. We are very proud, but it all needs maintaining and we are very grateful to our litter picker and all who help in any way, although collected litter has to be disposed of at an expense, but if a few more took their litter and dog poo home to dispose of we would be helping to save some of the one billion pound and maybe saving a library or a care home. Please be vigilant and report any wrong doings to 01302 736000. It is the only way we can keep on top of it. The Clerk and Councillors are always pleased to hear from you in whatever way you wish, phone calls, letter, E mail etc, but we are only human and do need some family time, so please try to keep calls to the hours of the working week, all calls will be monitored and answered as soon as possible.

Move & Inspired Me

Tickhill & District Lions Club

Things are continuing to look very exciting for the ‘Move and Inspire Me’ Team as we work our way towards the summer. Our head Instructor has been working very hard over the last few months working towards her Yoga Teaching Diploma and recently passed her practical exam with flying colours Well Done Deborah. This means we will be able to add Yoga to our already wide range of classes available very soon. Move and Inspire are very excited to now be working in partnership with several local schools offering classes for students, parents and the local community. We already have several classes running at Hayfield School and will very soon be starting classes at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College in Edlington. Please keep an eye on our website for details of these new classes. As a not for profit organisation, being so actively involved in the community is what’s important to us so look out for us at Tickhill Scarecrow Festival and The Big Lunch, we’ll be the ones dancing around having fun!!! As well as this we have also been working very hard on new choreography to keep our current classes fresh and vibrant and most of our classes are full to the brim of people having lots of fun doing simple choreography to their favourite songs whilst getting fit. These popular classes which are a blend of Body Conditioning, Zumba, Aerobics, FitSteps and many other dance styles are held in Tickhill, Bawtry and Blyth and offer both high impact and low impact options. Please visit our website for details of all our classes.

Race Night

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you are interested in joining any of our classes. We currently have a special offer running with classes available from just ÂŁ3 when paid for in advance. Please visit www.moveandinspire.me.uk or email moveandinspireme@icloud.com for more details. T

The Lions race night team would like to thank the committee, bar staff and members of the Top Club in Rossington for a very enjoyable evening in March. It is always a pleasure to spend time at the Top Club. A very successful evening raised a super ÂŁ390, all of which was donated to the Marie Curie Daffodil Appeal.

St Marys School, Tickhill With an increasing number of children learning to play instruments the school have created a designated ‘Music Room’ out of a room previously used for storage and photocopying. Lions have donated ÂŁ500 towards decoration, carpets and suitable furniture and look forward to children being able to accompany the new school choir.

Breakthrough Breast Cancer Come and join us for our annual coffee morning on Wednesday, 7th May in the Parish Room, 10am to 12 noon. There will be a raffle, tombola, a cake stall and a pound stall. Please support us to raise funds for Breakthrough. T
