“The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today” H. Jackson Brown Jr

As the months fly by, we once again enter the final term of the school year and exam season begins. Good luck to all those families with children and grandchildren studying hard this May. Once again, my family is included this year, with our last set of GCSEs nearly upon my youngest. The June issue will be delivered to you late May. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th May. June is sure to bring lots of summer events, so don’t forget to let me have details in good time if you have an event to publicise this summer. Enjoy May and I will be back in a months’ time with your June magazine.

BEE KEEPERS NEED YOUR HELP! T

Actually it’s the bees that need your help. The Asian Hornet has arrived in the UK. It was first spotted here in 2016, and it poses yet another threat to the Honey Bee population. It is extremely aggressive. Worse by far than our native hornet which is not a quarrelsome creature and actually less aggressive than our native wasps. The Asian Hornet ( Vespa velutina) has an unpleasant habit of hanging out at the entrance of a bee hive and as the workers emerge to go out foraging, it bites off their heads. It’s about twice the size of a bee. A small group of these hornets could destroy a hive of bees in a few hours, and then go in and help themselves to the honey. Apart from the sheer nastiness of this behaviour, the threat to the bee population will have a knock-on effect to the pollination of our food crops. Action is needed and DEFRA are set to eradicate this creature in the UK. So here are the distinctive features to look out for: It is about 20mm in length. It has a yellow segment on its abdomen which is mostly black/brown. On that yellow segment is a black triangular mark. It has long yellow socks on all its legs, and an orange face. If you see one please notify the Great British Non Native Species Secretariat immediately by email – alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk and if are able to photograph it, please do so and send a photo too.

Are you wearing the RIGHT colour? The best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you! there is so much more, the process quickly becomes highly cost-effective because the clothes purchased will always co-ordinate with existing items in your wardrobe. You will no longer throw away hard-earned cash on clothes you rarely wear, and in future everything new you buy will complement you and everything else in your wardrobe. Instead of a depressing array of one-off ’s that clash with each other, you will soon have a truly integrated wardrobe of clothes We’re all different, but we all have and accessories and will be able a unique combination of colour to create the maximum number tones falling within the spectrum of outfits from a minimum of seasonal categories. MOVEMENT AND THE BRAIN… Rather bizarrely, in the space of one week, some fascinating information regarding sea squirts has come my way from several different sources. Deeming it ‘a sign’, I thought I’d better share it! It is thought by some contemporary Neurophysiologists, that the primary purpose of evolving to have a brain is in order for us to make complex movements. Without the need for movement, there is no need for a brain. Cue the sea squirt!... A juvenile sea squirt uses its brain to wander the ocean in search of a rock on which to settle and call home. On finding one, it clings to it…and never moves again. No longer needing to move, it no longer needs its brain…and so eats it in an act of auto cannibalism! The human brain peaked in size 15-30,000 years ago at a time when we lived in a world of dangerous predators. Since becoming ‘domesticated’, the human brain has shrunk by 10%. As our ‘need’ to move is reduced still further, will our brains further reduce in size?!? Of course, in the context of brain science, this is over simplified mulling. As the American physicist Emerson M Pugh pointed out “If the human brain were so simple that we could understand it, we would be so simple that we couldn’t!” Still, I think this is rather thought provoking, if light hearted, and it is perhaps worth parents, teachers and colleagues with sedentary peers dropping this nugget of sea squirt knowledge into conversation. We aren’t short of reasons to get the nation moving more, but here’s another one you might decide to share…

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

BAGS OF FUN FROM THE

NORTH NOTTINGHAMSHIRE LOCAL GROUP T

FRIENDS OF

DONCASTER MUSEUMS T The Friends of Doncaster Museums were pleased to receive notification that their bid for support from Tesco had been successful.

This is down to the 'blue tokens' which customers allocated to us in Tesco stores across Doncaster in January and February. The 'Bags of Help' Scheme gives local community organisations the opportunity to raise money for projects which can make a difference in their communities. Our project you may remember was focussed on the imminent 50th Anniversary of the first moon landing. We wanted to celebrate this amazing milestone with a series of events which will enable people of all ages to either discover or rediscover the wonders of science. With the grant from Tesco’s, we will be funding a number of science activities over coming months. These will include siting a mobile planetarium at the museum on several occasions and some 'rocket' workshops. We also feel it is important to remember that our own home, Planet Earth, still has many wonders to be discovered and so we'll also be organising several animals handling sessions, featuring snakes and tarantulas to name only two species. All these events will be advertised widely; some will be pre-bookable. All will be fun! We'd like to thank everyone who voted for us; thanks to you we can offer these events free of charge!

WILDLIFE TRUST The North Notts Local Group of the Wildlife Trust has completed another very successful series of lectures over the winter months. A wide range of subjects has been covered by speakers who are all experts in their field. Topics included fracking, photomicrography, urban ecology, British moths and butterflies and developments at Sherwood Forest with the RSPB. There will be a series of activities through the summer including the Tim Bowles Memorial Walk, a guided walk in Treswell wood and we are currently finalising an exciting series of talks for the autumn which will begin in September. For more information about any of our activities, phone or email Jan 01777 709974 or 07969180067 or email janwilliamson133@gmail. com. If you would like to be on the email alert list, please email Jan with your request. For information about activities throughout the county, call at the Idle Valley and pick up a What’s on Guide or check out the Notts Wildlife Trust website for all manner of exciting things to do.

Hope to see you in the autumn.

COMMUNITY Club Sponsor

In last month’s article we mentioned that we would be holding our 3rd Annual Club Championships – well what an event that was! This is a Club-only event and is a great opportunity for all our swimmers, including the under-9s, to compete in a friendly atmosphere. The under-9s swam in 25m and 50m races and the 9s-and-overs swam in 50m and 100m races. Their times in each event were converted to FINA points which are used to ascertain the overall top prizes. The winners of the age categories and the Coaches special awards have not yet been announced – these are kept under close wraps until our Presentation Evening in early May where we celebrate all of our swimmers’ successes over the previous year, along with a generous helping of food, drinks, speeches, and music. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those volunteers who stepped in to help us run the Championships, a big “Thank you” to the Coaching team for their continual support of the swimmers week in and week out, and of course a “Thank you” to our Sponsors. The following weekend we took 24 of our swimmers to Mansfield Swimming Club’s Acorns meet. This was the first time we have attended this meet, and in an unfamiliar set-up, we still managed to perform fantastically well, taking part in 109 events, and bringing back 4 medals (well done to Emily, Jake and Leon) and 69 personal bests – some of which were obtained as an improvement on swimming times from an event only 5 weeks previously. Next on our swimming calendar is the Rotherham Metro meet at Ponds Forge where we will be taking our swimmers to participate in 2 days of racing. It’s a long weekend (and for anybody who has spectated at swimming events, they will know how hot it can get at the side of a competition pool!), but it is well worth it and we will report back on the outcomes of that in next month’s article. In the meantime, if anybody would like to join our Club, the Club Secretary (Jo Chestnutt) can be contacted on bircotesswimclub@gmail.com, or if any local businesses would like to sponsor, or provide prizes for our Presentation Evening, we would be extremely grateful.

CHARITY BUSKERS DO IT FOR FREE !!

Weather permitting, a new charity raising busking duo will make their debut at the Tickhill Scarecrow Festival. Tickhill resident David (on ukulele), accompanied by singer friend Shaun, under the name of "Not Them Again!" will be hoping to raise funds for the Weston Park Cancer Charity, by performing a range of songs from George Formby to George Ezra, hopefully catering for all tastes and ages. David points out that not many families have escaped issue of cancer in some way, so urges Tickhill to recognise the need for research funds, and donate generously. 100% of monies received will go to Weston Park. If all goes well, Not Them Again hope to take their cause to towns further afield, so any encouragement will be much appreciated.

Arts Review & what’s going on - MAY 2019 •

Terence Bennett Three cheers for the Crucible and for its production of Standing at the Sky’s Edge, the musical about the Park Hill Flats, following three generations who lived there, charting changing times and cultures, with plenty of wonderful music and Sheffield humour. Richardhe-can-do-no-wrong-Hawley has written the music for this poignant and fulfilling work. The theatre was packed, the atmosphere was great, and the show was given a standing ovation at the end. What more can one ask for? Artist returns after 50 years! TERENCE BENNET: A RETROSPECTIVE exhibition of paintings and drawings by this Doncaster artist. In September 1967 Terence Bennett became the first artist to hold a one-person exhibition at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery. Now, over 50 years later, as the Museum prepares to move to its new site at the top of Chequer Road, he is to become the last artist to have a one- person display at the gallery. The large-scale exhibition brings together paintings and drawings produced over a 60 year period, from student works created at Doncaster School of Art in the 1950s, to a series of glowing watercolours fresh off the easel. Terence was born in Doncaster in 1935, the son of a painter and decorator. He knew from an early age that he wanted to paint, and in 1951, at the age of 15, he enrolled at the Doncaster School of Arts

22

and Crafts, where he was taught by T.A Anderson, Eric Platt and Jack Camm. After completing his National Service he taught art at Doncaster High School, while continuing to paint and exhibit locally. As his work developed he became known for his Yorkshire scenes, including images of the mining landscape and costal places such as Spurn Point. In 1973 Terence was awarded the Yorkshire Television Fine Art Fellowship, and over that year produced around 70 works, all depicting the Yorkshire region, some of those paintings are now in the collection of the Bank of England. Throughout his life Terrence has continued to paint, and he has been recognised by inclusion in the prestigious Royal Academy Summer exhibition in London for a number of years, as well as holding many one- person exhibitions in London and across the country. Terence Bennett has been described a ‘a painter of place, someone who identifies with the place he is trying to capture’ and it is this that makes for such a compelling and moving exhibition. www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums Art at the Deli: through May Deli Artists including Neil McGregor, Penny Cawley and Maureen Fisher present FACES a group show of portraiture www.artatthedeli.com Harley Gallery Welbeck until 17 June SYLVIE FRANQUET who reworks found tapestries combining classical imagery and a punk aesthetic. ROMILLY SAUMARES SMITH another artist who reworks old discarded materials. This is such a poor description for an exhibition by an incredible artist, which is simply fascinating, and I highly recommend a visit. Romilly has made some really intriguing and beautiful tiny and detailed sculptural works in precious metals, I simply don’t know how they have been made, tiny fairy fingers and clever technical ability must have created these pieces. LITTER PICK

PROBUS

T

PROBUS meets in the splendidly refurbished THE CLUB - on Northgate (previously known as The Tavern). Probus offers a chance to chat with friends before a stimulating talk from a visiting speaker after which there are opportunities to have a drink or perhaps some lunch together. Meetings now start at 11.30 with doors open at about 11.10. On 11th April, Eric Scaife gave a very amusing talk on “Tyke Talk” which most of us understood though one poor Lancastrian was very confused! On 25th April, Steve Willimott told us about “the Delights of Brodsworth Hall”.

OUR NEXT MEETINGS ARE:9th May – Mike Cowan will tell Tales of Yorkshire and England Cricket. 23rd May – Malcolm Barnsdale will give a very well-illustrated talk “Old Doncaster Revisited”. New members are always welcome from Tickhill, Bawtry and the surrounding areas. Come and try us out – and the new facilities. For more information, please contact our Secretary, Adam Skinner - 01302 745900

CLEAN COMMUNITY T

At the meeting of Wadworth Parish Council on 14th March 2019 it was reminded that the Council would be holding a community litter pick on Saturday 23rd March at 10:00 – 12:00 This was planned to tie in with the Great British Spring Clean, an initiative through the Daily Mail newspaper. The 2 ward Members Cllr Martin Greenhalgh and Cllr Nigel Cannings helped source equipment, which was loaned from Tickhill Town Council along with collection of waste by Doncaster Council. The event was very successful and attended by 20 local residents, Wadworth Councillors and the 2 Ward Members. On the day of the litter pick 25 bags of rubbish were collected by the team and subsequently removed for disposal by Doncaster Council. With the success of this event, Wadworth Parish Council will be holding future litter picks which will benefit their local community and environment. Anyone interested in helping with future events please watch out for more information on the Council Website www.wadworthcouncil.org.uk

TICKHILL ST MARYS CHURCH Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Churchwardens, the Parochial Church Council and myself as Vicar of St Mary's, can I say a huge THANK YOU to all those who attended the meeting on Saturday 6th of April as we begin to explore how St Mary's could become a sustainable community resource for Tickhill. It was really encouraging to see so many people with a passion for the life of the church coming together and with the help of Rev'd Andy's facilitating of the afternoon, be able to explore, suggest and discuss the realms of what could be possible and what people would like. It was amazing to see how many ideas, and aspirations came forward. All the information gathered that afternoon along with the responses we have had in the post and by e mail will now be collated and form a key part in our further discussions and future planning. As said on the day, this is only the beginning of a long and complex process - however be assured that you will be kept informed throughout. I would also like to thank Rev'd Andy for leading us on the day, those who provided the refreshments and all those who assisted to ensure that the afternoon was a great success. With every blessing to you all

Hello Everyone, Welcome to our fifth write up of the year. How time does fly. However, we are still longingly awaiting those lovely warm sunny days, I personally can’t wait to walk my dogs without being completely muffled up in coats and scarves. I would like to say a big thank you to the other people that have advertised our Mayflower Ball for us, Gazette Newspaper, Eastside Magazine and Don Gill. This has resulted in all of the tables being sold which is a fantastic result. Everyone is so excited about this event and can’t wait for an amazing evening. We unfortunately had to cancel our Table Top sale in the Scout Head Quarters in Tickhill, through lack of interest in table bookings. However, on Sunday the 7th April our Table Top sale at the Sanctuary had an incredible morning and raised more money than they had previously done. This event takes place at the Sanctuary on the 1st Sunday in the month, so please go along and support them. We are holding our usual Sponsored dog walk in Bawtry Wood which is down Martin Lane in Bawtry and starts at 11.00 am. This is an annual event and it is so lovely to see lots of dogs that have been rehomed looking healthy, fit and happy with their new owners. This is one of my favourite events and we just

hope the weather is kind to us. There will also be home-made cakes, coffee and tea available. We have a long term dog in our Sanctuary and we desperately looking for that forever home for him. His name is Gouldie, he is 4 years old and quite an energetic boy. He has been with us 2 years so desperately needs to be in a forever home. He enjoys lots of attention and loves long walks with his carers. Gouldie would be more suited to a home without children also other dogs and cats, he initially had a problem making friends with other dogs, however his carers have been working with him and he is getting much more sociable. He is a very clean boy and also well mannered. If anyone out there can find it in their hearts to come along and check him out, maybe take him for a walk or simply have a play in our paddock that would be amazing.

Hope to see you at our Sponsored Dog Walk. Best Wishes. Margaret Godley Narrow Lane Bawtry 01302711330

Our opening hours are 2-4 during the week. Closed on a Tuesday, 1-4 Saturdays and Sundays.

Down in the Valley! Tickhill’s ‘best kept secret’ if you like garden machinery...

T

orne Valley is a bit of a hidden gem in the garden machine business, located on Bawtry Road, Tickhill. It’s a family run business, managed by Chris Chambers. It’s the kind of store where you will always walk out with a purchase even if you just go in for a browse! Stocking garden and horticultural supplies their brands include Viking, Stihl, Husqvarna, John Deere, Atco, Countax and other quality manufacturers, “we only stock quality brands” says Chris, “cheaper brands really aren’t worth stocking in the long run, as we have learned from our experience”. “Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten. Gardening should be pleasurable and not frustrating because machinery won’t start.” Torne Valley have three branches and is independently owned. The Bakewell store is located on Haddon Road, next to the petrol station, Epworth on Station Road and head office here at Tickhill in Doncaster, which has a heavy farming influence. Each branch tailors its products to fit the geology of the area in which it is based, Tickhill sell a lot of machinery for both small and large gardens alike. “Customers are always surprised at the range of over 30,000 products lines we stock” Chris explains. “Apart from the garden machines and ride-ons we have a range of hand tools and hardware, garden products, animal feed and products, horse tack, even kids mini tractors trailers and cars! It really is a huge range, but machinery is where we excel.” The range of products include lawnmowers, garden strimmers, brush cutters, a full range of hedge trimmers plus a huge selection of leading edge rechargeable lithium iron products which are light

weight. “The Stihl products really are a pleasure to use” adds Chris, “easy to handle, start at the flick of a switch, quiet and great for the environment. We presently have rechargeable Stihl strimmers at £99, which are very popular, we really can’t get enough of them.” “The same is true of the Stihl MS180 chainsaw, this 31.8cc 14” petrol chainsaw retails at £250 but we’re doing them at £189 and, again, they are selling really well. Whether it’s garden maintenance or cutting up logs for the burner these are a great machine!” At Torne Valley, they spend a great deal of time and effort to ensure they price stock competitively. “We are careful when buying stock, the size of the business enables us to bulk purchase during the off season when we can really push to obtain good prices. This enables us to pass these savings on” says Chris. “As Spring hits us and the garden bursts into life it’s time to get the old garden tools out and if you’re thinking of replacing them please give us a call. “At Torne Valley we’ll listen to your needs and recommend the right machine for you, we’ll then demo it and once you’ve decided on what you want we’ll set it up and run it so you’re really familiar with it. No opening a box and scratching your head as you figure out how to put the new lawnmower together” Chris says. “If you buy from us, you know it works, you know it’s right for you and you build a relationship that will probably see you coming back time and time again … the internet doesn’t do that!” Chris laughs. When you next need a garden machine, pop down to Torne Valley and see if they can help, you won’t be disappointed.

Tickhill Estfeld Visit Colomendy let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! The Kingswood Centre at Colomendy, North Wales is a fabulous centre to visit. Situated in the Welsh hills, it has a great views the Moel Famau Country Park which has been classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty since 1985, and of course of Moel Famau itself, which is the highest hill in the Flintshire range. Our Y6 pupils recently stayed there for a week of challenge and adventure. The beautiful green and lush landscape requires a lot of rain to maintain it, and this year we even had snow – picturesque but chilly. However, the weather didn’t dampen the spirits or the enjoyment of the group. The pupils were resilient and determined to take part in all of the outdoor activities regardless, and are to be commended on their perseverance; we couldn’t be more proud of them – what excellent ambassadors they are for our school. On the outbound journey the party visited the Imperial War Museum North at Manchester. The pupils found the interactive displays and hourly media shows interesting as they brought to life their work on the Second World War. The museum is exceptionally good for all age groups and well worth a visit. The Colomendy centre is perfect for thrill seekers, and is surrounded by rolling hills and natural woodlands, which are home to a variety of wildlife. During their time at Kingswood our pupils enjoyed climbing and abseiling

40

amongst the treetops, hurtling through the air on the zip-wire and taking the leap of faith. It was fortunate that most of them had a good head for heights and enjoyed a challenge. For the more down to earth there was caving, orienteering and archery, whilst others preferred the buggy-building activity. Throughout the week the pupils needed to work together in pairs or as a team and this was something which they did very well, encouraging each other and congratulating their friends’ achievements. The pupils took the opportunity to try new experiences and for some the events were outside of their comfort zones. For them it took real courage and determination to try something new and challenging. Well done to all for making the most of the opportunities on offer. In the evenings the pupils relaxed singing songs around the campfire, making rockets as part of the scrapheap challenge and rounded off the visit on the final evening with a disco - dancing the night away at Club Kingswood. We arrived back in Tickhill tired but happy and proud of what they group had achieved. The children’s excellent behaviour and attitudes were commented on by many of the instructors throughout the week, and they were a real credit to our school and their families. Well done to our pupils and thank you to all of the staff who accompanied the class on their visit. They really do make a commitment to our pupils’ development and we couldn’t do it without them.

LEGAL MATTERS

Change to Divorce Law Changes to Divorce law will be made as soon as parliamentary time becomes available according to the justice secretary. This will be the biggest change in divorce law in 50 years. At the moment one party has to allege unreasonable behaviour or adultery if they have not been separated for two or five years. The new legislation would mean only having to assert that the marriage has irretrievably broken down, without having to attribute blame or wait for at least two years. There will be a six-month period for reflection before the Decree Absolute is granted. The aim of the overhaul is to reduce conflict

between divorcing spouses. David Gauke who announced the changes said “While we will always uphold the institution of marriage, it cannot be right that our outdated law creates or increases conflict between divorcing couples. So, I have listened to calls for reform and firmly believe now is the right time to end this unnecessary blame game for good”

These changes in divorce law have taken many years to be approved and will be welcomed by divorcing couples and family lawyers once introduced. It is to be hoped that parliamentary time is made available in the near future and the long-awaited changes are finally implemented

It will also be possible in the future for there to be a joint application for a divorce. The changes are long overdue and will hopefully reduce conflict and Head of Family Law, hostility which can be damaging Taylor Bracewell for divorcing spouses and their 01302 341414, children. ST MARY’S STAY AT SHERWOOD

Year 3 have had a fun-filled term at school as we imagined life as one of Robin Hood’s merry men during our overnight residential trip to the historical landmark, Sherwood Forest. On our first day in Sherwood we walked, ran and galloped for hours in search for the legendary Robin Hood, visited the incredible Major Oak, and dared to climb the tallest trees in the forest. In the evening, we embarked on a night walk through the forest and hid from the

Evil Sheriff of Nottingham, and his men. The following day was spent building and testing out dens that we would be able to live and survive in… a real challenge in Strong Gareth’s strong winds! Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our first residential trip to Sherwood Forest. It really brought the tale of Robin Hood to life, and gave us memories that will last a lifetime.

EASTER SERVICE Year Five at St. Mary’s concluded our Spring term by leading our Easter service in church on Thursday 11th April. The children took us through significant events leading to Jesus’

42

death on the cross and culminated in his glorious resurrection on Easter Sunday. The children sang and acted beautifully and made everyone proud.

COMMUNITY Tickhill in Bloom has been in existence for over 30 years. It was created in its present form in 2003. Previously it had been run by Tickhill Town Council with funding from the Council. In 2003 a new group was formed that was a partnership between local residents, all of whom are volunteers and Town Councillors, two of whom are Trustees of the Group. We are responsible for the planting and maintenance of the various floral displays to be seen around the town. These can be found at the town “entrances” – from Doncaster, Maltby, Bawtry and Worksop and in various locations particularly at the Buttercross where most would agree we have a spectacular display every year. Residents and visitors will see our members and helpers wearing hi viz vests, kindly donated to the Group, with the words “Tickhill in Bloom Volunteer”, working very hard at different times of the year, planting, weeding and generally maintaining the various beds

TICKHILL & DISTRICT W.I T T Our speaker on Wednesday 1st May will be Michael Fowler who is a writer of detective novels. He talks about his books and how he started writing. This is at 2p.m. in The Parish Room, Tickhill when we welcome all visitors. Advance notice for 5th June is Fay Robinson speaking about her life as a Tiller Girl.

TICKHILL IN BLOOM T and planters. Many residents compliment us on the results of all this hard work. If anyone reading this article feels they may be interested in joining the Group please have a word with our Chairperson Gill Hill Tel. 743317. In a year we spend around £1000 the bulk of which is spent on plants and fertiliser. From 2003 funds have been obtained entirely from fund raising events and donations from local businesses, residents, local organisations and the occasional grant. We normally have an annual coffee morning in the Methodist Church Lounge which this year will be held at the end of the summer. Raising money in these ways, as many similar organisations will recognise, is becoming increasingly difficult in the current economic climate. Donations will always be very gratefully received! In recent years the Buttercross display has been sponsored by individuals or organisations, for example on the occasion of a significant wedding anniversary and by a local family celebrat-

ing 100 years residence in the Town. In 2014 the sponsor was the local Horticultural Society celebrating the 50th anniversary of Britain in Bloom and their own 30th anniversary. At the time of writing we have no sponsor for 2019.

The Group is very proud of the fact that we regularly receive recognition from Doncaster in Bloom and in 2014 we were recipients of one of two Gold Awards acknowledging the hard work undertaken by our volunteers. Last year we achieved Silver Gilt Standard. We support Tickhill wide events for example the annual Scarecrow Festival (winners in 2012) and the St. Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival. Finally we willingly form partnerships with other Tickhill groups. We have assisted both St. Mary’s School with flower gardens and the local Scouts with the five planters (provided by the Town Council) which enhance the appearance of the car park.

DEAR ALL,

I very much apologise for the delay in writing this letter to you but my fund raising campaign was rather more involved and took longer to wrap up than expected. I am, at last, in a position to tell you that I have my new Braille machine. It is very much more capable than the old one and will take a little time to get used to. However, I intend to be able to integrate it into my day to day life very soon. Thank you so very much for your very generous contribution to the purchase of this machine, which will enable me to continue running my life efficiently. I very much appreciate your generosity.

OUT AND ABOUT CLUB T

We met at our new venue in Castle Close Community Centre on the 4th April. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Worksop Savoy to see a performance of The King and I from the London Palladium on the 4th and a performance of Calendar Girls at the Lyceum, Sheffield on the 10th. The meeting decided we would choose the 14th May for our visit to the Phoenix Theatre, Bawtry to see a production of Relatively Speaking. We also decided we would make a further visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park during the summer months. Next Meeting to be held at 10.00 am at Castle Close on Thursday, 2nd May

TICKHILL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY T

At our March meeting we welcomed Rachel Barrowcliffe from Worksop to speak to us for the first time. Living this side of Worksop Rachel is very conveniently based for her main gardening work as a gardener at and advisor to Hodsock Priory. With her theme being 'Container Gardening and Growing Vegetables in pots' Rachel made us think about the use of different containers for our plants - garden trugs in a range of colours, car tyres painted bright colours and attached to walls and fences, old wellingtons or boots, the list is endless. The major challenge is the choice of plants for the container - for decoration, for the kitchen or both in the same container. It is surprising how good the right mix of flowering plants and vegetables can look providing both colour and excellent fresh food. Our large pot could provide red, orange or yellow tumbling tomatoes, a range of salad leaves and still have room for flowering plants. It was a very interesting evening which gave us lots of ideas. For those who missed the meeting, or would like to hear more, Rachel will be speaking at the Gringley Allotments and Gardening Society meeting at Gringley Community Centre at 7.30pm on Wednesday 12th June. Our next meeting will be on Thursday May 30th when our speaker will be Dave Newman, 'The Sage Gardener' from Lincoln who will be talking about 'Propagation'. The mention of propagation reminds me that we would appreciate any donations of plants to sell on our stall at the Tickhill Gala on 6th July. 25% of our sales will be donated to the Scouts. Meetings start at 7.15pm prompt in the Methodist Schoolroom, visitors welcome £3, or why not consider becoming a member, £8, for the rest of the year.

Phil Thomas Tel. 744946

DONCASTER SPANISH SOCIETY will be holding a quiz evening on Friday 17 May, 7-9pm. The meeting will also be attended by several young Spaniards who will answer questions on their lives in Spain and discuss any Spanish topics of interest to members and visitors. Please come along and test your knowledge of Spain and Spanish America. It is also a chance to practise your Spanish but for non-Spanish speakers, quizzes and discussions will be translated. All are very welcome. Friday 17th May, The Eastfield Restaurant, Doncaster Deaf Trust, Leger Way, Doncaster, 7-9 pm.

IN THE GARDEN

Scaling the Walls What do you think of if I say ‘clematis’? I think most of us would think of the large, purple-flowered, “Jackmanii” or the rampant, bronze-leafed, pink-flowered montana rubens. They are both terrific plants, but I think they are a little over-used. My husband teases me that I tend to give my ‘clematis lecture’ when visiting friends’ houses and see one scrambling over a trellis. For your benefit I’ve written it down here. Clematis is known as the ‘Queen of Climbers’. It can be utterly spectacular and should definitely not be relegated to trellis. It can used for covering fences and arbours, old tree stumps, sheds and even in beds and borders. Choose wisely and you can have flowers from early spring until late autumn. For beds and borders you don’t want anything as vigorous as montana, which will smother everything it touches. Instead choose a daintier one such as a variety of texensis or viticella. The flowers of the texensis hybrids look like finely cut bells. “Etoile Rose” is a beautiful dark pink edged with paler pink and “Princess of Wales” is a beautiful rosy red. Both of these will scramble through shrubs and flower all summer. They die back in winter so can be tidied up then. Viticella hybrids produce flowers which look like little pixie hats as they open. “Minuet” has purple and white flowers suspended on fine stems while “Purpurea Plena

46

Elegans” produces double blooms which open into little purple rosettes. One of the most difficult sites to find climbers for is an east or north facing site. My absolute favourite clematis thrives in this situation and flowers in early spring. Clematis alpina “Pink Flamingo” produces nodding, semi-double, creamy flowers veined with deep pink. It has the added bonus of producing beautiful fluffy seed heads after the flowers fade. Clematis prefers its feet in the shade and its head in the sun. Make sure the plant’s roots are shaded: pieces of broken flagstone are ideal, or an old cracked upsidedown terracotta pot with the bottom knocked out. When clematis is happy it will flower prolifically. Large-flowered clematis tend to produce a second flush in the autumn, but others like tangutica and orientalis wait to flower until then. Both of these are very vigorous and are great for covering unsightly sheds or old trees. Finally, if you have a sheltered spot against a wall try cirrhosa balearica. This is a beautiful, winter-flowering variety with ferny foliage and pale-green flowers spotted with crimson. So, there it is…my clematis lecture. Hopefully you took notes and are ready to branch out into a whole new world of climbers. Happy gardening!

Champagne moments

HERE FOR YOU your Tickhill & Wadworth Ward Councillors T

Our Local Ward Surgery is held At Tickhill Community Library First Saturday of each month 11:00 -12:00 We operate a sit and wait system so there is no need to book an appointment. An enthusiastic audience at Tickhill Music Society was treated to a night at the opera by four maestros at the last concert of the season – Clare Wheat (soprano), Sally Perkins (mezzo soprano), David Watkin – Holmes (tenor) and Thomas D Hopkinson (bass). They were brilliantly accompanied by Jonathan Gooing at the piano, who also gave informative and entertaining introductions to each group of songs. The group took the audience on an operatic journey, starting with Handel and finishing with Britten. The pieces were not delivered in statuesque fashion but were acted out, with (for example) Rodolfo and Mimi from La Boheme continuing their duet out of sight as they left the make-believe garret. For any not familiar with opera the concert was an insight into the delights of this art form; for opera buffs it was an opportunity to revel in familiar arias by Verdi, Mozart and Puccini. The evening was rounded off with a rousing encore in the form of the toast to champagne from Die Fledermaus, which perfectly captured the mood of the audience.

It’s Time to Talk

Dear Friends, It’s time to talk. I have heard this so many times in all spheres of life. Recently, it is the government talking with the opposition in order to have a compromise over BREXIT.

Talking over issues is not new in Christendom. Jesus encouraged his disciples to talk to God by introducing them to the Lord’s Prayer. This has become one of the most popular prayers of all times. But I wonder if we can think of some of the things we need to talk about. After Jesus resurrected on Easter Day, the story is told of a couple who were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus. On the road, they shared their frustrations of the Jesus whom they hoped was the Messiah but had been killed. Luke 24: 15 – 24 state: As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

“What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.” The above conversation between the couple and the stranger depicts the couple’s disappointments

54

and doubts. It is a typical conversation that occurs in our normal lives. As we read further in the chapter, we will realise that the stranger explained the scriptures to them. This helped them in their understanding. It was when the couple had invited Jesus for supper, and he had broken bread that they realised who he was. Upon reflection I realised that sharing our stories with one another and with God can make a great difference in our lives. For example, many people are experiencing mental and emotional stress because they cannot find the space and time to share. Some people even feel very lonely to the extend that they are considering ending their lives. However, there in hope in talking to someone or an agency. Secondly, I wonder if it’s time for us to be like Jesus by being ready to walk alongside people and listening to them. They want to share their disappointments and doubts but most often, there’s no one to listen. Jesus, on the road to Emmaus, did not interrupt when the couple shared their feelings and disappointments. He did not judge them but just listened. It was after their sharing that he decided to help them with the scriptures. I wonder whether we have the time and space to help people pour out their hearts and feel safe in our presence. I also wonder if they can trust us at all. The couple trusted this stranger on the road to Emmaus. No wonder they were prepared to listen to this stranger who had a solution in his sleeves. This month, I wonder if I can suggest to any one struggling to be bold and talk about their disappointments, fears and struggles. You can find help in the church around you or from a professional agency. Secondly, I wonder if as a good neighbour you can free up a few minutes or hours a week to sit by someone who feels lonely or whom you know is struggling. You will be a saviour to that person and that’s what Jesus is asking us to do. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

Rev Dr. Frank Okai-Sam

South Yorkshire Police Male Voice Choir T In October 1925 the Doncaster County Borough Police formed a Male Voice Choir to perform at the Doncaster Grand Theatre in order to raise money to buy boots for the less well-off children in the Borough. Over time the choir's name changed due to force amalgamations and today the choir is known as The South Yorkshire Police Male Voice Choir, probably the oldest police male voice choir in the UK (94 yrs) with the same charitable ethos. Many concerts both home and abroad have been performed in front of many people and on Saturday 1st June 2019 at Hall Cross Lower Academy School at 7pm the choir will be in concert with guests The Doncaster Youth Swing Orchestra, compare is BBC Look North Presenter Phil Bodmer.

We are always eager to welcome new members, of which we have welcomed a few recently and the choir invites men of any age to come and join us - so do come along and enjoy the camaraderie of singing in a four part choir (Bass, Baritone & two Tenor parts). All prospective new members are most welcome to attend our rehearsals which are held each Monday evening in the Schoolroom to the rear of the Methodist Church, Northgate, Tickhill from 7.30 to 9.30 pm. Remember, it is not necessary to have the ability to read music or to have any previous experience. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact our secretary, Mike Webster – telephone 07775 793097. We look forward to seeing you there!! On Tuesday 9th April we attended the funeral of one of our well-loved members, John Timms. The choir sang two items in memory of John, “Morte Christe” and “Going Home” at the request of his dear wife, Daphne. Our concert season this year got off to a good

Having travelled there together by coach, we had some spare time to have a coffee and some lunch before the performance which was led by our Music Director Gwyneth Platts and was compered by Allen Mason with accompaniment by Janet Skinner. The concert consisted of 12 choir items which were interspersed by solos by Phillip Randall, Martin Lord, Chris Buley and three members of our Barbers Shop Quartet “The Young Once”, Mick McNamara, Len Hornsby and Richard Parker – the fourth member, Ron Fletcher, being unavailable. Our next concert will be a visit to Doncaster Prison on Wednesday 29th May. Look out for further details of our Annual Concert on Saturday 1st June at Tickhill Methodist Church when we will also welcome a guest solo artiste. As usual this promises to be another unmissable event. . . . but not TODAY

Tickhill and District Our March meeting ‘An hour with the Ostler’ is still causing members a great deal of laughter. Duncan Jagger’s story of how he became the owner of a procession of unruly and sometimes extremely stroppy horses had his audience crying with laughter. Keeping a straight face, we almost expected a serious talk, how wrong we were! By the end of his hour Duncan had his audience aching with laughter as he related his experiences. We shall definitely need to hear from him again. Our May 16th speaker is tourist guide, Maria Glot, who tells the story of Sir Titus Salt of Saltaire, and his decision in 1853 to relocate his mills out of the polluted and overcrowded city. Now a Unesco World Heritage Site this model village was years before its time, with a park, hospital, baths and wash house, it even had alms houses for the elderly.

Tickets £10, will be on sale at the April and May meetings for our 5th June speaker, Lesley Smith from Tutbury Castle. Lesley thrilled everyone last year with her portrayal of Anne Boleyn, and she will again appear in Tudor costume for her talk ‘Sex and the Tudors.’ Evidently not just Henry VIII had a good time, so did lots of other people according to the records. Not suitable for those who shock easily or are of nervous disposition! Please note we have a change of venue, this will now take place in the Methodist School Room at 2.00pm. and is a ticket only event. Meetings begin at 7.30pm, doors to the Methodist School room open at 7.00pm. As always, visitors are welcome.

Mayors Report for 2018-2019 Summary STAFFING Employment Opportunity Tickhill Town Council are exploring two possible employment opportunities Firstly, a Pavilion Administrator: The position would involve managing Pavilion bookings and the associated payments, over-seeing scheduled maintenance and use of consumables, as well as maintaining excellent relationships with users of the facility Secondly, a number of years ago, Nigel Cannings undertook Litter Picking duties and has become a familiar figure throughout the Town. Nigel has decided that the time has come to relinquish this role and we seek a replacement, a hard act to follow. Anyone wishing to explore either opportunity should contact the Clerk Maxine Booker, either by emailing her clerk@tickhilltowncouncil.co.uk or by calling her on 07591 179658

NEIGHBOURHOOD MANAGEMENT TEAM. Richard Marshall continues to cover our area and does so with the utmost diligence and his time is split with other areas when required. Neighbourhood management is now more hands on within the community, something Tickhill has been able to achieve. A big thank you is to be extended to Richard for his continued hard work and dedication. We will endeavor on our part to keep up communications and work with the very much, although reduced, successful and committed team. We give them our full support.

TRAFFIC AND PARKING We are improving our Free Car Park with New Signage and refreshed Paint and Symbols in the disabled Bays, also there will be one extra Disabled Bay added. Parking on pavements and grass verges is a problem and we continually seek a solution.

PLANNING Planning can be contentious, but our Neighbourhood plan continues to play

64

an important part in our considerations. This enabling legislation has given us the power to decide the destiny of our own small Town but still needs the consent of DMBC who are however obliged to take our views into account! Members of the Public are reminded of the opportunity to attend council meetings and inform the council of any developments which they may not approve of or even wish to support.

TICKHILL IN BLOOM The Tickhill in Bloom Group continue to give us delightful flower beds throughout the year and we must give a special thanks to the group. It is hoped they can continue with their sterling work. Thank you, Gillian, Margaret M and all the dedicated team you keep our Town looking lovely!

LITTER PICKER The Volunteer Litter Picker has now been picking litter for over 6 years. Thank you to Councilor Cannings for all his hard work and his continued dedication to the “Cause”.

THANKS I must thank all my Councillor colleagues and our Clerk and RFO, for their advice, expertise and continued commitment to the community over the last year. We could not possibly exist without them. All Councillors carry out their duties to their fullest potential and without remuneration or expenses, so thank you all. We also thank our Borough Councillors for their continued commitment to our community. Our staff at the Pavilion, as ever, have played a major role this year with their hard work and co-operation. It is not the easiest of work but fulfills a vital role in the community. Huge thanks to Jamie, Gillian and Andrea. Finally, I would also like to thank all residents who support the Council in so many different ways particularly the members of the Advisory Committee – and to all those who contribute to our meetings and surveys.

As the annual Scarecrow Festival approaches the Beavers, Cubs and Rainbows have set about making mini scarecrows from wooden spoons. The end result, with about 60 scarecrows, will be on display in the Scout and Guide HQ on May 4th for all to see. This will be a real test of the youngsters’ ingenuity and handiwork. Prizes will be awarded for the best scarecrows. The Beavers have continued to develop their craft works by branching out into making items which are both interesting and

66

useful. They have each made a bug hotel which should now be located in the youngsters’ gardens. Painted stones seems to be a popular pastime nowadays and each Beaver recently painted a stone to put on show somewhere. Following a stuttering, but successful, start to completing the chef badge the Cubs will be concentrating on learning basic cooking skills before producing a 2 course meal which they will serve to their parents sometime in the not too distant future. Not sure whether

to look forward to this or not but time will tell. Games Workshop has recently taken on the sponsorship of the Scout Model Maker badge. One of the challenges in this badge is to make a model. Games Workshop have offered to supply model making kits to the scouts to enable them to complete this activity and our Scouts will be taking up this offer. tickhillscouts@aol.com; www.tickhillscouts.btck.co.uk
