MOXON’S TOURS

Welcome to the

MAY 2017 edition

“Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate.” Zig Ziglar

I am sure it won’t have escaped your notice that there is a local and mayoral election this month and a general election in June. While this magazine isn’t of a political nature, we are pleased that several of the local candidates have chosen the magazine as a way of communicating with you, their electorate. I hope that you find the information they have provided to be useful to you. The quote above pretty much sums up the one rule I gave to candidates wishing to use the magazines to communicate with you, in that the magazines could be used to positively promote their own policies and promises but not to be negative about anyone else’s.

Local Young Actors take to the Stage Several local young people are being given the opportunity to perform in an amazing stage production at Doncaster Little Theatre this month. Tickhill based Youth Theatre Group will be performing Les Misérables (School Edition) from 9th-14th May providing a wonderful opportunity for many stage loving young performers to be part of such an iconic show. Amongst them, 17 year old Charlotte Mickley who has been performing since she was 5. Charlotte will be playing Éponine in 3 of the performances. Previous parts have included Gabriella in High School Musical, Robin in Godspell and earlier this year Roxie Hart in her college production of Chicago. A year 13 student at Sir Thomas Wharton Academy, last month Charlotte passed her grade 8 vocal performance exam with distinction. She is now planning to study Performing Arts at University. Another local performer is Emma Shiels aged 19 who has also been performing since she was 5. Now a Law Student at Nottingham Trent University Emma’s dedication to the show has seen her travelling home to Tickhill most weekends to attend rehearsals for her part as Fantine alongside Charlotte in the same 3 performances. Les Mis is a show that Emma has always wanted to perform in and fortunately she just meets the age criteria for this schools edition, turning 20 just a few days after the May run! Many of you may also recognise Adam Calvert (17) who grew up in Tickhill. A former Hill House student he now attends Barnsley Sixth Form College where he recently played Edna Turnblad in Hairspray. Adam has wanted to play the role of Javert for many years and is thrilled to have the opportunity now. He would like a future in performing and his first television role airs on our screens very soon! The show will include live music throughout with talented local musician Simeon Lowe (16) leading the band. All the lead performers will be able to perform wearing a radio microphone thanks to the generosity of various grants and donations over recent weeks. The latest of these coming in April from Tickhill Lions, the Taylors Making a Difference Locally scheme and the Blakemore Foundation (Spar). 8 new microphones have been purchased which will benefit this show and many future performances. Many more local children are to be part of this show and with 7 performances across 6 days they would love the support of local residents to ensure that they play to full audiences each time. Tickets are £12 adults/£10 children and £8 tickets for groups of 10+ are also available from the box office on 01302 340422 or www.doncasterlittletheatre.co.uk 10 TICKHILL TODAY

Dementia Awareness Week

During Dementia Awareness Week, 1420 May, Alzheimer’s Society is asking everyone to unite against dementia. Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer. But awareness and understanding remains low and many families are facing it alone. We have put together some tips to help you be the best CAREGiver possible. Remember, it is very important that you have someone to turn to when the going gets tough. Be patient: It can often take time to get into a consistent care routine. Keeping calm and patient will allow this to happen whilst also respecting your loved one’s dignity and independence. Take a guilt free break: Allowing yourself some alone time to unwind a few times each month will help you to recognise and provide a much better quality of care. Accept that they have changed: The person you care for is unlikely to be the person you know them to be. Accepting this change will help you to stay in the here and now and give the best care possible. Help them feel good: A new haircut or item of clothing can do wonders for your loved one’s confidence and self-worth, so don’t forget to treat them every now and again. Accept help: In order to properly take care of someone else, you need to also be able to take care of yourself. When people offer to help you, it’s okay to accept it. Practice acceptance: Focus on accepting the situation you are faced with the one you are caring for and look for ways it can help you grown as a person. Focus on the things you can control and find the silver lining. Focus on what you are able to provide: It’s normal to feel guilty sometimes, but understand that no one is a “perfect” caregiver. Believe that you are doing the best you can and making the best decisions you can at any given time.

Learn a relaxation technique: Using relaxation techniques can help you feel more rested. They can also help you make time for yourself and don’t have to take lots of time if you’re struggling to make space for activities. Take care of your health: Think of your body like a car. With the right fuel and proper maintenance, it will run reliably and well. Exercise regularly, eat well, and don’t skimp on sleep. Laugh: Laughter is strong medicine for the mind and body and is a powerful antidote to stress. Watch a funny movie, go to a comedy club, and make time for fun activities like bowling or karaoke. If you are struggling to cope as a carer, it is very important to talk to someone to get the help and support you need. A MUSICAL ANNIVERSARY Tickhill Music Society celebrated its 40th anniversary by inviting back the string quartet who had played at its inaugural concert in 1977. They then demonstrated their versatility by moving swiftly on to the charms of the Mozart, written nearly 150 years earlier. If authenticity was needed, the quartet played on instruments which all pre-dated Mozart’s birth. Arts Review

& what’s going on - April 2017 •

Maureen Fisher

The show of the month has to be at the Djanogly Art Gallery where Winifred Nicholson’s joyous exhibition of nearly 100 works graces the 3 galleries. She was Ben Nicholson’s first wife, before he ran off with Barbara Hepworth, (he left her before their third child was born), and she managed to continue as an artist whilst raising 3 children, producing new and fresh work until her death in her 80s. She is an important figure in art and in feminism, a renowned colourist with a marvellous touch; her work is often delicate and ephemeral. Her real skill was knowing when to stop, her works are never over-worked and tired, and that is a real skill. The poet Kathleen Raine, said on a BBC programme about Winifred, that “flowers were an occasion for painting light”. The exhibition is excellent, and the café there makes a trip to Nottingham a pleasant one.

in hundreds of UK town halls and theatres night after night as well as featuring on TV. The exhibition explores how the showmanship of wrestling drew on earlier traditions of public entertainment such as music hall and circus and how this informed the development of the cast of characters, storylines and audience participation unique to the sport. Life drawing: 8 April 11-1pm and 2 - 4pm Art History Lecture: Friday 7th April 10.30 am: ‘Renoir’s Portraits’ The great impressionist painter Auguste Renoir is perhaps best known for his paintings of voluptuous nudes and social gatherings, but he was also a prolific painting of portraits, from intimate images of his family to formal commissions. £5 www.doncaster.gov.uk/ museums Village Ventures I fell over a booklet of events for this wonderful live and local organisation, which is now run by someone in Derbyshire rather than Notts county council… their publicity seems sparse, and the website non-functional… but they are still there and doing it, even though we have missed many months’ worth of shows… Saturday 22 April 6.30pm ‘Opera Dudes – Licensed to Trill’ I have seen these two clowns ( I use the word loosely) and they are great fun and sing of course too… Everton Village Hall 01777 817395 www.villageventures.org.uk Art at the Deli: April exhibition ‘The Owl Lady’: Maureen Fisher solo exhibition www. artatthedeli.com Harley Gallery Welbeck from 14 April to 11 June ‘First Rain -Warli Painting’ These are stunning paintings from India, filled with an intense and detailed patterning. I first saw these works in the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green about 18 months ago, so am assuming it’s the same work and that they are on a UK tour. Well worth a look see and more exciting than the last lego show. www.harleygallery.co.uk

Djanogly Art Gallery, until 4 June ‘ Winifred Nicholson - Liberation of Colour’ - a major retrospective of the artist’s work in this most convivial of gallery spaces. Well worth a visit. Also ‘Sarah Key -Worlds all at Sea’ a drawing show in the same gallery. http://www. lakesidearts.org.uk/

Hello from Mayflower and I hope that everyone enjoyed their Easter break. We have had lots of visitors over the Easter period and met some lovely people. Most bringing bedding, toys and goodies for our many dogs and cats. This is very much appreciated. We have had some really exciting news Marks and Spencer have extended our charity of the year, so instead of our year ending in April we are to carry on until July. They are also coming along to carry out a couple of projects to help us. We are all very grateful for the amazing contributions they have given us throughout the last year. Now the weather is getting a little warmer our dogs are enjoying their extra walks and the dog walkers do a terrific job, so a big thank you to you all. If you are interested in walking or any volunteering please call us, you would need to come and carry out your health and safety training on a Thursday morning at 10.30am. You can either take a hands on role or help with fund raising. This is a very important role, we need people to help with collections on a weekly basis. We need to raise enough money from various sources as it costs us £600 per day to

stay open. This also takes into account £50,000 vets bills for the year. So fund raising is one of the most important jobs anyone can do. If you would like to set up a direct debit for even as little as £2 per month please let us know. Come to our Sanctuary and have a chat about the amazing work we do. We also have a shop in reception that you can buy almost anything for your beloved pet. We will look forward to seeing you soon. Please call us if you require any further information about our Sanctuary or any of our dogs and cat that you have seen on the internet 01302 711330 is the number to call.

Please research the breed if you are interested in this stunning boy.

Also a big thank you to everyone leaving dog food and bedding in my garage. I am surprised every day by people’s generosity. Best wishes

Dear Friends, I believe you had a good celebration during the Easter break. I know it was not all about the bunny and the eggs but you were reminded RQFH DJDLQ RI WKH VDFULČ´ FHV *RG PDGH IRU XV through his son Jesus so as to make us his children.

Talking of God and his children, God wants us to engage with him as a child will do with his or her parents. One of such ways is by prayer. Jesus taught his followers a simple prayer that KDV EHHQ JLYHQ GLÎ? HUHQW QDPHV 0RVW FKLOGUHQ call it “Our Fatherâ€? and many people know it as “the Lord’s Prayerâ€?. It is found in Luke chapter 11. Page 174 of a paraphrased version of Luke’s gospel called ‘The diary of a disciple. Luke’s story’, a book published by the Scripture Union in 2016 reads: “Jesus prayed. A lot. He knew it was really important to keep in touch with the father in heaven. Not only did he pray a lot, he was really good at it, so one day his mates asked him to teach them. “Do it like thisâ€?, he said. “Dad in heaven, please help us to remember how awesome you are. Let what you want happen here on earth. Provide for us everyday everything that we need and please forgive us when we do wrong. Help us forgive others who do wrong to us too, and help us not to be lured into things that are no good.â€? &RQVLGHU WKH Č´ UVW VHQWHQFH ČŠ'DG LQ KHDYHQ please help us to remember how awesome you are.â€? Most of our memories or feelings towards RXU HDUWKO\ IDWKHUV RIWHQ KDYH DQ LQČľ XHQFH RQ the way we view God. If you are close to your father, then you might imagine God as a lovely father who is always engaging with you and looking out for you. But if your dad has not been a big part of your life, or if you have a bad relationship with him, then it might be easy to think of God as distant and uncaring. However, God is a very good father. He is better than any earthly father we could possibly imagine. He loves us very much and wants the best for us. As I have stated earlier on, God wants to be in a relationship with us. So even if you have a hard time identifying with the image of God as your Father right now, be encouraged by who God is. Psalm 103: 13 – 14 state, 50 TICKHILL TODAY

You may want to write on a ‘post it note’ paper or any piece of paper. Stick it at a place where you can see it regularly or put it in your pocket and look at it many times this month. As part of helping you pray this month, Churches throughout the world celebrate Jesus’ ascension to heaven which is about six weeks after he resurrected at Easter. Hence, we devote ourselves to prayer over the ten-day period. This year, the theme for the period is ‘Thy kingdom come’, which is based on the Lord’s prayer. On the other hand, if you live in or close to Tickhill then I wonder if I can use this opportunity to invite you to various activities of worship services, prayer walks and sessions happening in St. Mary’s Church of England, the Methodist Church and in the community. It will be good to participate in all the activities but you are welcome to engage with some of them if your schedules may not allow you to do so. On the other hand, even in your own spare time, you can work out and engage with what you missed. May the good Father continue to look out for you and provide your needs as you engage with him and this world this month.

A ‘Thank You’ Note from the Tickhill Tower Bell Ringers

Dear Friends; You may already be aware that the St Mary’s Church PCC is considering the installation of a mobile phone mast in the tower bell chamber. March and April were quite busy months for the choir.

18 numbers accompanied by Janet Skinner with Gwyn Platts as Musical Director. Enjoying wonderful spring weather we then had a little free time before joining together once more for a meal before returning home.

First of all on 11th March members of the choir attended another music workshop led by the enigmatic James Sills at Thorne Academy, hosted by Thorne & District Male Voice Choir. A great day of fellowship and music, everything being sung without any musical accompaniment and James once more left us with some new material for us to use in the future.

Our next event will be our Annual Concert which will take place at Tickhill Methodist Church, Northgate, Tickhill on Saturday 4th June, commencing at 7.30 pm. Make sure you book this date in your diary and look out for ticket details soon! We look forward to seeing all our regular supporters, and new ones, at our concerts throughout the year.

Local History Society

Tickhill and District Our March meeting featured ‘The story of the Zeppelins’, and surprised almost all of us. Most members simply did not realise they carried on a commercial passenger service to Canada and India for nearly five years. Floating hotels, with bars, sun decks, cooks and even a smoking room, in fact very similar to today’s cruise liners. Sadly, it all ended in a blazing tragedy, which was caught on film by a BBC crew, who happened to be filming for a documentary. They had always had a chequered career and the decision was quickly taken that putting people up in the sky in balloons was not the safest form of transport. 68 TICKHILL TODAY

Our May speaker is Anne Featherstone, who will talk about ‘The History of the Music Hall’. This year’s summer outing takes place on the 1st June, when we pay a visit to Leeds Armouries. The Armouries holds the only complete set of elephant amour in the world, holds daily re-enactments of wars and battles, jousts, archery and falconry, in fact something for everyone. Further details available at our May meeting. Our meetings are in the Methodist School Room at 7.30pm and our May meeting is the 18th. Visitors always made welcome. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

THE KINGS OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY Our Regiment has currently no KOYLI specifc memorial in Yorkshire, it is our intention to correct this historic wrong by raising funds and having the statue shown mounted on a plinth and positioned outside Doncaster Museum which already holds the KOYLI museum. The statue and plinth will stand 11 foot high and close by there will be an information plinth containing a description of the memorial and our Regimental Collect. On August 1st 2018 it will be 50 years since our Regiment was taken out of the Army’s Order Of Battle, it will also be Minden Day which is one of our battle honours when the memorial will be unveiled. On Saturday 6th May.2017 ex KOYLI Gary Dickinson will hold a Pie and Pea supper in Tickhill Cricket Club with live 50s & 60s music IURP ČŠ'D\EUHDNČ‹ DQG WKH XVXDO UDÉž H DOO SURFHHGV JRLQJ WR WKH 0HPRULDO FRÎ? YOUR COUNCILLORS NIGEL CANNINGS

Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - MAY 2017

April and May have seen increases to various hire charges for the facilities that are provided at the Pavilion. These decisions have not been easy. Residents are reminded that these decisions have been made by the Council as a corporate body and not by its employees or individuals. The Clerk, Pavilion Manager and Caretakers are sometimes carriers of bad news and the Councillors request that the staff are spoken to with the respect they deserve. All the staff put in far more hours than what they are paid and it is with this goodwill that the Pavilion and sports facilities keep functioning. All staff work part time, the Clerk 20 hours per week and the Pavilion Manager 11 hours per week and are not contactable all the time. Please leave a message on their answer phones if you do not get through immediately. If residents wish to complain, the correct method is to write to their employers the Council via the clerk, who will in turn present your complaints to the Council at the next appropriate meeting. All letters and e mails are answered by the clerk after careful council consideration and direction. For at least 7 years the fees for the use of the facilities at the pavilion have not been subject to an increase, and any additional costs have been absorbed by the Council without increasing the precept. Residents are requested to also make complaints about, for example, pavements and road surfaces to DMBC directly by telephoning 72 TICKHILL TODAY

736000 or by emailing DMBC: customer.services@doncaster.gov. uk or by using the mydoncaster app either on online or by using your smart phone. This should be the first point of contact. If, however you are not successful then please contact Tickhill Town Council by e mailing tickhillcouncil@gmail.com or sending a letter to the clerk who will pass on your complaint. Contact details are at the side of this article. If Tickhill Town Council too has no response, the next step is to take this to your Ward Councillor. 1st March saw the introduction of “Public Place Protection Order” which means that all dogs must be kept on a lead in public places where sport is played and, obviously, this refers to the Recreation Ground. More information will be published when it becomes available and signs put in place. Initially, there will be a period of time of “Education” before fines are issued. On a closing pleasing note, the provision by the Council of flags and poles to our two schools was well received and they were used to great effect for the Commonwealth Day celebrations on the 13th March when both schools made a terrific job of the ceremony and it was very clear that the staff had grasped the opportunity to educate their charges about our wide spread and diverse Commonwealth. They have also said that they intend to make use of the flag poles during other important national events such as the Queen’s Birthday and St Georges Day.
