Welcome to the November edition of TICKHILL TODAY. TODAY A bumper issue this month, with additional pages to cope with the demand for space. We welcome several new advertisers, as well as many regular ones. I am really pleased that we have a great Restaurant review, our first in some time. Turn to page 24 to read about our return visit to The White Horse Inn, Misson. We also have several pages of money off vouchers all for local shops and services. It is great to be able to support our local businesses and even better when there is an added money saving incentive for doing so! Please do take advantage of the vouchers, if the businesses get a good response from them I am sure that we will be able to offer lots more money saving offers in the future. The December edition will be delivered from 28th November. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included in it is with me by Friday 12th November. The December magazines are always very popular so don’t leave it too late to contact me if you would like to book an advert in this edition.
Best Wishes, Paula

Bring and Buy
With Christmas approaching and our Late night Shopping Event on Thursday 25 th November, it strikes me that the Retailers in the town invest a lot into our amenities. The best recommendation they can have is, ‘word of mouth’, and their reputations. Tickhill is a ‘sought after’ residential area and has been for as long as I can remember. The housing market may have slowed with the economic downturn, but on the whole prices seem to have held. We are lucky to have a picturesque setting and a community feel, but I have lost count of the number of people who have commented on the sorry sight of the Market Place with so many premises vacant, while they change hands. Fortunately, because Tickhill remains ‘sought after’, there seems to be an influx of Retailers and business people willing to invest in our town and open new outlets, despite the risk and uncertainty at the moment. It is up to us as residents to support them and match their enthusiasm. Of course, Retailers have to do sufficient themselves to bring customers through their doors, with advertising, offering the right goods at the right price, and being open when their customers want to shop. Some have been here a long time, so they must be doing something right for a lot of people, and some onus must be placed on residents who take pride in living here. We all have friends, relatives & work colleagues who visit us, particularly at this time of year, so do your Retailers a favour and bring them to view the unique shopping that still resides in Tickhill. You’ll be surprised at what you discover and amazed how many of them had similar amenities in locations where they live, until they weren’t sufficiently supported and they lost them! Come on Tickhill - give it a go! Talk up your town! Put a few hours aside this Christmas Shopping season and take a fresh look at your shops. Buy at least some of your gifts in the town, otherwise the centre of the town will soon be vacant and the face of Tickhill changed forever.
Shop Local! Independent businesses are vital “Between 1961 and 2007 we lost 71% of our local shops and services including post offices, banks, butchers and grocers” (The Guardian, 2007) Alarmingly, at this rate of decline, it is estimated that traditional independent retailing could be wiped out within the UK in the next 15 years. It makes sobering reading doesn’t it? Each year, national chains displace locally owned businesses across the country leading to so-called ‘clone high streets’. Is it any wonder that people are losing their sense of community? We tend to shop where we think we’ll receive the best value for our time and money. What does it matter if the business is an independent trader or a national chain? Well it matters a lot... Independent local businesses employ a wide variety of supporting services. They hire local architects, designers, carpenters and sign makers. They probably employ a local accountant, insurance broker, web designer and solicitor. Local retailers and distributors also tend to carry a higher percentage of locally made goods than the chains. All this leads to the ‘local multiplier effect’ and means that every pound spent in a local business returns around three and a half times that to the community. In contrast, a chain typically uses a minimum of local services and their profits will be exported from the local community back to their corporate HQ. Then there is the matter of choice and diversity. A local retailer will sift through available products and stock those he feels will appeal to his customer base. A single independent retailer may have a smaller selection than a big chain but multitudes of independents actually increases diversity. Think about it: when a few buyers from national chains dictate what reaches consumers, our freedom of choice is eroded and it is choice which helps to create a richer, more vibrant community. It really is worth supporting local businesses because every time you spend money with a local trader you are supporting the continued strength and vitality of your community. So go local! As an added incentive for residents to purchase local products and services over the next month or two, we have a variety of savings and money off vouchers for readers to use. These vouchers are repeated in all 3 of my publications this month so while not all businesses may be based in your own town/village they are all within easy reach and are all locally owned independent businesses that would benefit from your custom.

MAYFLOWER ANIMAL SANCTUARY, BAWTRY. October is here already upon us and the days are getting noticeably shorter. This year is flying by. We held our annual sponsored dog walk in Bawtry forest on 10 th October. It was a beautiful clear day and over 50 dogs and their owners came along to support this event. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone that attended and also to Sir Jack Whittaker for allowing us once again to hold this event in Bawtry forest . Another thank you must go to Mulberries Beauticians in Retford for donating all towels that are no longer useful to them. With winter and wet and damp days approaching we can definitely find a home for them. They are also supporting us by agreeing to have a donation box in reception for everyone's loose change. So thank you once again. Good news on Kylie the little staffy that came to us with the distressing flea allergy, she has at least stopped itching and her coat is starting to grow a little. She will be on medication for a while yet but we are happy with her progress so far. We recently held an event at Epworth show, where we were asked many times what is meant by fostering a dog or a cat. Sometimes we have animals that need that special family, like Doug, who is blind in one eye and has been in a road traffic accident. Or Murphy the Lurcher who at 10 years old is overlooked because of his age. Or an elderly cat that just needs to curl up on a knee. In these cases we would not ask for a donation for the cat or dog. We would carry out a home check to make sure all was well and safe. We would also expect the foster parents to contribute to the food bills but the Sanctuary would be responsible for all vets bills..we will also be there for any support you may need If you feel that you could give an animal a loving home as a foster parent please call us. Our charity shop in Manton has now been transformed into a lovely gift shop, so if you are looking for that special present please pop in. Or if you have any good quality unwanted gifts that you would like to donate to a worthy charity please let us know we would be very grateful. We are also looking for people to help in the shop so if you have a few hours to spare please call us. Bonfire night will be here soon and as most people are aware this can be an atrocious time for animals, cats, dogs, rabbits, horses etc. Please think about this in advance and make any provisions necessary in order that your pet or anyone else’s pet isn't put under any undue stress. If you are looking for that special pet please come along Mon-Fri we open 2-4 we close Tues and Sat & Sun we open 1-4 Please call 01302711330 or 07969203206 if you would like any further information about our Sanctuary

Tickhill Estfeld Reception visit Sherwood Pines In early October the new Reception class visited Sherwood Pines Forest. As it was their first school trip the children were very excited. The forest is a wonderful place to visit at this time of year. It is vibrant with colour, and the changes of the season are there for all to see and enjoy. The children spent some time exploring and collecting a variety of natural objects such as pine cones, ferns, twigs and stones which they used to produce a piece of “woodland art”. Working together the class produced a “picture” of a large bear, similar to one that they had met in their stories prior to the visit. The class would have liked to have brought Big Bear back to school; however the picture had to stay on the forest floor, from where we are sure that it delighted other forest visitors for several days thereafter. The children also made models of “bogarts”, mythical creatures that live in the forest, using clay and natural items from the forest floor. The afternoon was spent further exploring the forest collecting “treasure” to take back to school. And of course there was a little time for some active play on the balancing logs and play equipment. The children really enjoyed their day and were more than a little tired when they returned to school. A successful visit, enjoyed by all!
Tickhill St Mary’s C of E Primary and Nursery School ST MARY’S ARE GOING QUACKERS! St Mary’s PTA organises an annual duck race at the Tickhill Mill Dam to raise money for the school. This year the weather was a bit more inclement than in recent years, but a large amount of people still turned up on the day to support the race. The PTA was on hand with light refreshments and anyone fancying a bit of shopping was able to peruse the duck related merchandise. Suddenly the stream was filled with yellow plastic ducks with only one making a false start. Bravely dodging the obstacles in the stream, many a duck fell to the wayside, victims of long grass, stones and twigs, but the majority struggled on fearlessly, going into the dark tunnel under the road and carrying on the perilous journey along Water Lane. The crowd followed with bated breath trying to catch a glimpse of ‘their’ duck. Could it be the winning one? The winner and runners up received a cash prize as did the last duck. This is an enjoyable day out for adults and children and raises some needed funds for the school. Thank you to everyone who supported the race and donated the prizes! Katarina Martin, School Secretary

An update from Tickhill & District Lions As winter draws closer and the days shorter we can all look forward to the upcoming events that will be sure to put a smile on your face in November and over the Festive season. We kick things off as usual with our Bonfire and Fireworks Night at The Oak pub which this year is on Saturday 6th November. This continues to draw a big crowd so make sure you wrap up warm, get your spot and you can also grab a burger or hot dog to keep you going. Entrance is free but donations are encouraged and as ever all the proceeds go towards very deserving causes within our community and around the world, so please come along and join in with the OOoos and AAaahs! As usual over the festive season we’ll also be selling raffle tickets for our Grand Christmas Draw with fantastic prizes; 1st prize: city break for two, 2nd prize: Nintendo DS Lite, 3rd prize: a food hamper worth £100, 4th prize: £100 of petrol or diesel, and 5th prize: a fresh 15lb Turkey. OPEN EVENING AT SIR THOMAS WHARTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE Following a very successful year, in which the school improved its results in every category, Sir Thomas Wharton Community College opened its doors to parents, carers and students from Years 5 and 6. There was a vibrant, lively atmosphere around the school as visitors were able to experience a range of activities and meet the staff. The state of the art technology was on display, with the 80 computer Learning Resource Centre open and the staff on hand to promote the After School Study Club, which runs every Tuesday and Thursday. There was an opportunity to try out some of the excellent facilities. Great fun was had as both adults and young people:
designed and made book marks and tasted the delicious pastries in technology, became engrossed in war games in Humanities, tested their detecting skills at a crime scene in forensic science watched a rehearsal for this term’s production in Drama, taxed their brains with quizzes and problems in Mathematics & English witnessed the skills of students in Physical Education and the Visual and Performing Arts, tested their knowledge of the cinema in Film and Media Studies puzzled over jigsaws and card games in Modern Foreign Languages.
In addition, the award winning eco challenge cars were on display for racing enthusiasts, who marvelled at their 1200 and 900 mpg mileage consumption
Sir Thomas Wharton Community College was opened in January 2009 and the impact was immediate; ethos, pride and aspirations grew and the students’ attitude to learning changed as their self-worth and self-belief flourished. The new school became an agent for change, providing a new beginning, with the opportunity to raise expectations and change the way the school was perceived in both the local and wider community. There has been a considerable improvement in standards in the two years that we have been in the new school 2010 witnessed the school’s highest ever percentage of students gaining 5 A* - Cs including English and Maths, to 47%, .This represents a 17% increase in two years. In addition, 99% of our students have left Year 11 with a qualification. The response of visitors at the open evening was very positive as they commented on how much we clearly care about our students – their well-being and their academic success. This reflects OFSTED’s judgement that “Students appreciate the way staff care for them and the time they give them.” Overall, the evening was a tremendous success, eliciting very positive comments from the visitors, who appreciated the enthusiasm of both staff and students. C.A.T.S. & 2ACT THEATRE GROUP CEILIDH NIGHT The fundraising night held at Tickhill Institute for the local Drama Groups, C.A.T.S. (Carr-nival Academy of Theatre Skills) & 2ACT Theatre Group was a huge success. The 140 guests had a fantastic night of Irish Ceilidh Dancing ( pronounced Kay- Lee ), enjoyed Fenton Butchers’ Pie and Pea Supper and there was an amazing Raffle with over 40 fantastic prizes kindly donated by many local shops and individuals. The funds were boosted by an Auction with special prizes including a Hot Towel Shave from SJ Grooming - Stephen Jon, a night of Fencing for four (sword fighting not chain-link! ) from Doncaster Fencing Club, 3 nights for 10 people in a luxury holiday cottage in Anglesey from, Hen Gilfach, Menai Holiday Cottages, and the one which created the most interest was the Spanish Tapas Dinner Party to be cooked at the winners house by Chris Bonnett and Richard Stoodley with the final bid subject to them wearing less than their aprons ! An amazing sum of £ 2345.00 was presented to Simon Carr of the theatre groups who said “I am simply amazed at the generosity of the people who donated prizes & bid in the Auction, I can’t thank them enough but I also must thank Karen Stoodley who organised this fantastic night CATS meet every Saturday morning at Tickhill Pavilion. 2 groups of children - juniors and seniors, aged between 5 - 16 - work tirelessly under the direction of Simon Carr, to produce individual or group shows that are quite simply a credit to them. The shows produced are fantastic but are mainly only supported by the parents, ...... quite simply, these shows deserve a larger audience just to see what some youngsters are capable of, given a small amount of direction and confidence. CATS is now in its 16th year and through its ranks of over 1000 pupils, all have benefited in some way and future talent has been nurtured and encouraged. Many have been inspired to attend Drama School and are actively working in the theatrical industry. To name but a few, one of the early CATS members, James Lomas was the original Billy Elliot on the West End and more recently, Thomas Howes, who was often working in CATS productions and offered his skills as Musical Director on many Events, is now playing a major part as William in ITVs Sunday Drama Downton Abbey. In-fact, if any of you attended the latest 2ACT production - The Boyfriend - not 4 weeks ago, Thomas was playing lead role, commuting from London to be in this excellent classic show at Doncaster’s Little Theatre alongside amateurs. 2 ACT is the natural progression, where these maturing children are allowed to turn into adults both on stage and off and the social side is friendly, welcoming and supportive. This group is from 14 to 25 and although Simon orchestrates these productions, it is the drive, confidence and self esteem of these teenagers and young men and women which results in fantastic shows and individual performances. The shows that 2ACT produce are quite simply, magnificent and their Les Miserables received standing ovations on every performance and in my opinion equalled its West End counterpart. There are plenty of forthcoming events for you to judge for yourself, these young children don’t deserve to perform to half full theatres, and it would be great to give them the audience that their effort is entitled to. CATS and 2ACT have an open door policy, anyone wishing to join or just see if it suits them or their children, please contact Simon - 01709 890059 or email carrnival39@yahoo.co.uk

Sleigh bells ring from Doncaster! Santa’s little helpers can enjoy the trip of a lifetime with new festive flights to Lapland from Doncaster’s Robin Hood Airport. The seasonal flight will be operating from December 3 2010, where families will be able to celebrate Christmas in the Arctic wilderness for a special three night break. The trip includes a private meeting with Santa himself – with presents and souvenirs for every youngster. In addition a special Lapland day break will also be flying out from the Doncaster Sheffield Airport on December 20, with a range of winter wonderland activities such as a Husky sled journey, snow mobile trip, reindeer sleigh ride and a private meeting with Santa included. Mike Morton, airport director said: “We are delighted to welcome the Christmas holiday season with such fantastic new winter getaways which will light up and bring smiles to many faces across the region. “There is no better way to celebrate the wonderful festivities than escaping to such a beautiful, idyllic location - a place that everyone associates with Santa Claus and his merry little helpers. We are sure families will thoroughly enjoy a very special Christmas, with the added convenience of being able to fly from their local airport.” The break incorporates full board accommodation in a selection of family run hotels. Prices start from £699 for an adult and £579 for a child for the three night trip, and £429 for an adult and £399 for a child for the Santa Lapland day break.

GENTLEMEN PLEASE The trouble is they don’t these days. That is, please. The idea is losing favour. There was a time when people knew what a gentleman was. He was not a peasant or of the lower orders. He was a person of some social standing, had refined manners and good feelings, was courteous and honourable. He would rise from his seat when a lady entered the room; he would doff his hat to a lady in the street. He would go on bended knee to propose. He would always honour and respect the fairer sex and try to accommodate any fickle whim. His correspondence was addressed to him as ‘Esquire’ rather than as mere ‘Mister’. If perchance he lost heavily when gambling at the card table he would do the decent thing: go to the library and shoot himself. He was, after all, a gentleman. Nowadays any young man misguided enough to try to be courteous and refined and to respect as well as admire members of the female sex is apt to be confused. There is much to admire about women. They can be practical, intelligent, resourceful, compassionate and caring. They cope stoically with the hormonal disturbances that their sex has to endure and face the stress of childbearing with courage. They create homes and nurture family life. They like to present themselves well and look attractive. The rise of militant feminism, though, has brought advanced and welcome ideas of Equality. Women these days can pay their share of the lunch, may even go to the bar to order the drinks. They can rewire an electric plug or decorate a room as well as do all the traditional household tasks they are saddled with. Many are powerful politicians or Chief Executive Officers of large businesses. Such liberated women will spurn any man who offers them a seat in the crowded tube train (unless perhaps they are obviously heavily pregnant or disabled). Yet at the same time some still quite like to be helped on with their coat, have the car door opened for them or be ushered into a room first. They can feel neglected if they don’t get the occasional bunch of flowers. They can feel piqued if their new hair style or the latest additions to the wardrobe are not instantly recognised and suitably applauded. So, come on young ladies, which is it to be? Do you still want the cake of courtesy, consideration and old fashioned chivalry or would you rather have the ha’penny of equality? Or do you really still want both? But the poor males trying hard to do the decent thing feel they only get it right by pure chance. They will continue to be confused until the ground rules are clarified. Perhaps the ladies (gentlemen still call them ‘ladies’ even when the evidence is not altogether clear) could wear a label announcing ‘Independent Spirit’ or ‘Old Fashioned Values’. Or perhaps they may prefer ‘Take your chance, I like to keep my options open’. Shall we brace ourselves for a lively female response in the next issue? Philip Mottram

Forensic Science comes alive at Sir Thomas Wharton The special day started with a mock up accident in the bus park where a young man on a bicycle was knocked over by a car. A Para Medic arrived to look at the car driver and the cyclist. However the cyclist came round and ran off into the street. The fire brigade, with sirens ringing, were soon on site and quickly cut the roof from the car enabling the Para Medic access to the injured driver. Students watched as all worked very carefully, using cutting equipment, but protecting the driver at all times from further injury. Once the roof had been removed a board was slid down behind the driver and he was eased onto it and lifted free of the car. Students watched spell bound and asked questions once the demonstration was over. The rest of the day was spent in a number of workshops. The Para Medic demonstrated CPR and students were able to practise on resuscitation manikins. Evidence-taking was practised; this included photo-kits of staff and students and comparing finger prints. Finally students played out a court room drama taking the parts of the main characters such as magistrates, prosecution, defence, probation, press, not to forget the witness and defendant. Members of the Doncaster Bench attended and gave first hand details of the work of magistrates in Doncaster. Students found the whole day fascinating and learnt a great deal about the aftermath of a road accident and the consequences of careless driving.

Tickhill TARA Another enjoyable evening was held on 29th September with many problems being resolved or looked into. We had a quick chat on the Core Strategy for Doncaster and will discuss this in depth when the "persons in the know" can explain it at the next meeting this month. We will keep you informed as we will have had the meeting before this goes to press. We have been approached to have a coffee morning on a Thursday in the Communal Hall . We are delighted to do this as we have plenty of space for motorised scooters so all you "Scooties" can meet up with friends and have a coffee and chat on a Thursday morning. This gives everyone a wonderful choice of days to socialise in our village as we are not in competition with anyone we have been approached and asked if this was possible. Our next meeting is the 24th November at 6.30 p.m in the Castle Close Communal Hall and as it will be our last till after Christmas it will have a festive feel. Trisha Marsh Secretary Tickhill TARA.

Parish Room News
TICKHILL RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION
Once again we are thinking of Christmas! Well, maybe not quite Christmas, but certainly the official switching on of the Tickhill Christmas trees and decorations on 25th November!
‘Make your meals more amazing’ – ‘if you like food, a My Secret Kitchen tasting is a fun and friendly experience that’s not to be missed’. This is the next TRA event at Tickhill Institute on Monday 1 November at 7.30p.m.. Admission by ticket (price £5) from 0782 1589104. We continue to chase up those issues which bother you, like the parking just into Common Lane which can destroy visibility for vehicles turning in and the mystery as to why the gates over the A1 on the extension of Common Lane have been open so much this summer. The bridge is supposed to be for farm use only and is much used by walkers; we do not want the rat run again! When we have answers, we’ll let you know. The Government is supporting those who want to get rid of street clutter, like unnecessary signs. Proposals as to any we could do without in Tickhill will be welcomed as some of us hope to present suggestions to Doncaster MBC if we find some good ideas. John Hoare
A huge amount of work goes into a night such as the late Christmas shopping night. Many people are involved in the planning of the celebrations, and once again the Parish Room will open its doors to all and sundry. Tickhill will be welcoming people from far and wide and we will be hoping to see a lot of them in the Parish Room - making all our hard work worth while! We will be open from 5.30 p.m. until 8 p.m. As usual we will be offering you mince pies, mulled wine, John Sweed's famous crepes, tea, coffee and hot chocolate. We will also have several stalls inside the Parish Room selling a wide range of Christmas gifts including jewellery, pashminas, handbags, hats, scarves, gloves, wood carvings, pictures, paintings, greeting cards, the Tickhill Scarecrow calendar and many other irresistible 'things'! After the 25th November start to Christmas, our next 'big event' will be on Christmas Eve when Tickhill is full of carol singers! The Parish Room will be open from 6 p.m. - 8.30 p.m. that night, again offering you mulled wine, mince pies, tea and coffee. Please call in, you will be given a warm welcome, and a chance to thaw out if the night is chilly! If you want to book the Parish Room for your own parties and celebrations, please ring me on 07840 419763. Janice Birkinshaw

Tickhill Scouts
This has been an interesting month with all sections doing things which are out of the ordinary. All of the Scouts took part in a major activity organised by the Phoenix Explorer Scout Unit. This event, the Phoenix Challenge, occurred over a Saturday afternoon and evening. 10 groups of youngsters raced around Tickhill carrying out various challenges ranging from a “Crystal Maze” to an assault course. They arrived back at the scout and Guide HQ to be met with a hot meal and a prize giving ceremony. The winning team – Liverpool (strange name) - made off with the trophy. Following the prize giving, those that wanted to slept over in the building after watching a series of DVDs. Perhaps “slept” was the wrong word. The scouts did not settle until 4.30 am, for which they paid by being roused at 8.00 am with Radio 4 and all the lights being switched on. Revenge is sweet!! The Explorer Scout Unit and our very own Network Unit took part in a similar, but more challenging weekend event – the Apex Challenge – in the Peak District. Our teams did very well with the Network Unit coming 3rd and an Explorer Team coming 9th. The cubs went to an Aeroventure Day at Doncaster Air Museum and gained the Air Activities Badge. Shortly after half term they will be entering the Doncaster Cub Scouting 10 pin bowling competition. The Beaver Colony has just said goodbye to 3 of its members as they move on to Cubs and 3 more youngsters have taken their place. Unfortunately, the waiting list is still growing as we still need at least one more adult to commit to running the Beaver Colony. Without this adult support the colony stays at its current size and the waiting list doesn’t shorten very much. On a much more positive note, we now have 4 adults who have volunteered to take on leadership roles in our other sections. This is really good news and we look forward to welcoming these people into our team and wish them well. The next time the whole Scout Group will be seen in public will be Remembrance Day. Everyone will attend and we will be providing the trumpeter for the Last Post. We continue with fundraising as usual. We are trying to raise money to buy a new laptop and also assist Alice, one of our explorer scouts, go to the International Scout Jamboree in Sweden next year. You can now purchase our very own Christmas Puddings specially made by an award winning pudding maker. They are £5 each and are available by contacting myself (01302 747430) or calling at the Scout & Guide HQ on a Friday evening. We are also running a Christmas Draw with the first prize being a Christmas Wall Hanging made by Mrs Jill Gunn. The proceeds from the Christmas Puddings and the Jumble Sale will be used to help Alice. On November 20th there will a novel Horse Racing event in the Scout & Guide HQ. For further information and tickets to the event please contact Mr Kevin Welborn on 01302 750839.

Tickhill Town Council Newsletter The Council is already well advanced with Christmas arrangements and notices will shortly be posted about the Best Dressed Christmas Window competition which will be judged in December. The Christmas Tree will be installed and lit together with the Christmas Lights in the Market Place area on Thursday 25th November at 6.00pm to coincide with the late shopping evening arranged by Tickhill traders.
.
The traditional Christmas Carol service at the Buttercross will again be held on Christmas Eve at 7.00pm As usual, Neighbourhood Management have asked that any group planning Christmas Activities or events should let them know so that Doncaster Council can assist in publicising them. We hope as many of you as possible will participate in these events.. Last month we published details of the Council’s Accounts for the year ended 31st March 2010 and we have just completed the first 6 months of the current financial year. You may recall that there was no increase in the Precept this year and will be pleased to learn that the Council’s finances remain in order and that budget targets are being met. Many of you will know that the Council has been seeking a new Town Clerk to succeed Mr Jillott who retires at the end of the year. We are pleased to announce that the position has just been offered to and accepted by Mrs J Oliver and further details will be announced later. Tickhill and District Local History Society The closing date for this edition of Tickhill Today is before our October meeting so a report on that will have to wait until next month. Meantime there are plenty of other things going on. We wrote to Mr and Mrs Moss, the tenants of Tickhill Castle to thank them for opening the castle grounds to the public on 13th June this year and copied our letter to the Duchy of Lancaster (who own the castle) and to English Heritage. We have received a reply from the Duchy’s agent which gives us some optimism that the castle grounds will be opened again next year. In November we will be publishing another Occasional Paper entitled “Growing up in Tickhill” by Betty Hill, now aged 95 but still with a razor sharp memory. Some of you may have read the earlier paper “Memories of Tickhill Schooldays” by Betty’s late husband, Ron, which we published last year. This new paper gives an entirely new “take” on Tickhill childhood in the 1920’s and perhaps reflects the differences in importance which boys and girls attach to various aspects of growing up. The paper will be on sale priced £2 at our November meeting and thereafter at the KSM Card Gallery in Castlegate. On Thursday November 25th we will be joining in the Tickhill Late Night Shopping Event with a stall in the marquee at the Scarbrough Arms. Let’s hope that the weather will be as kind as last year and that as many or more people will enjoy the start of Tickhill’s festive season. Our next meeting will be on Thursday November 18th when David Templeman will talk about Mary Queen of Scots, a lady who at one period in her life had more local connections than you might think and she might have wanted! As usual the meeting will be held in the Methodist Schoolroom starting at 7.30PM. Members and visitors alike will be welcome.
