Stephen & Tracey are very pleased to welcome Nicky Hill back to

Welcome to

the NOVEMBER 2014 edition

“Aim for the moon. If you miss, you may hit a star.” W. Clement Stone Early in October I spent a couple of days at a Publishers Conference, meeting with many other publishers of magazines just like this one. People travelled to the Heart of England conference centre from up and down the country, one even arriving from Australia! It is always lovely to spend time with fellow publishers and we all learn from one another and some good friendships have been formed. Lots of planning for 2015 took place, and yes I will be aiming for the moon during my 10th anniversary year! I was honoured to be shortlisted for 3 awards at the evening awards ceremony, and I came home with a bottle of bubbly for ‘meeting deadlines’! We have not one but 2 prize giveaways this month. We have the return of the ‘Win a family ticket to Peter Pan Pantomime’ and also 10 pairs of tickets to the Festive Gift Fair at the NEC. The Racecourse Pantomime is looking like it is going to be fabulous entertainment and I heard great reports of the Festive Gift Fair from those who went last year, in fact I am planning a trip myself this year. You may be surprised how few people enter the giveaways we run, so you have every chance of winning prizes if you regularly enter. Look out for the details of how to enter inside the magazine. The December issues will be delivered to you late November. I can’t believe that we are back to producing Christmas issues already! If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 14th November. December magazines are always the busiest of the year so do get your contributions to me on time.

Enjoy November and I will be back in a months’ time with your December magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

What a Day! After, 10 months of solid work and planning, the day finally arrived and what a day it was. At 7.00 am, the circus rolled into town, barriers, trucks, big screens, marshals, pop-up shops, food stalls, sign posts, banners, flags, speakers, toilets, first aid the lot. Within the course of about 3 hours, our beautiful village was transformed into a street racing circuit which would later be heralded as quite simply the best Cycle Criterium Race in the UK ! Tickhill Grand Prix is on the map and thousands turned up to support the 8 races which included Youth, Junior, Men, Women and professional Elite Racers. There were almost 400 Riders from all over the country with many coming from overseas events just to compete at Tickhill. The level of talent was incredible with many Races boasting current or past British Champions and the Elite Men and Womens Races were contested by riders who had just come 4th and 2nd respectively in the recent Commonwealth Games ! Our brilliant new 2014 video can also be located on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=TsnPFj5slSc or by searching Tickhill Grand Prix. The full results can be found on www.velo.net and there are also photos on www.tickhillgp.com One thing that the organisers are most proud of is the Crowd – most of the Riders thanked and waxed lyrical about the ‘amazing Tickhill crowd’ and the extra drive your cheering gave to them. Amazingly, even with such high class competition, there were some surprise results with the Riders in the main four senior Races all producing their best ever results and they all put it down to amazing support and atmosphere. Obviously, offering one of the UK’s biggest Prize Funds and an amazing iconic Trophy based around the Buttercross (by local Sculptor Michael Johnson) helped a great deal, but the Riders really love our village and what we put on for them. Yorkshire Air Ambulance visited us and money was raised from the programmes and Tickhill Lions also

Youth Racer MAX WILLIAMSON - won the Polypipe U16 Boys Race then went on to Race in the J E JAMES CYCLES Cat 3/4 Mens Race (Team BikeBoxAlan) kindly donated an additional £500. One of the highlights of the day was the way the Women Cyclists took to our event and Tickhill had a record number of Women Racers for this sort of event. The two Women’s Races were very popular with the crowd and you can be proud that your support and your village is at the forefront of promoting Women’s Cycling in the UK. Huge thanks must go to all those who supported us and the many marshals who helped us on this great day, but the other main thanks goes to YESSS Electrical and our army of 70 other local and national sponsors without whose financial input would not have allowed this event to go ahead. – THANK YOU ! The day was rounded off with a prize presentation and the course was quickly removed and there have been no complaints, so we must have done something right ! For next year we have learnt a lot, mainly behind the scene things that will just help make things run more smoothly. If you didn’t get a souvenir Mug (5 different designs), they are available at Fenton’s Butchers and KSM. We are already planning 2015 and sponsors are already committing, but if you have any ideas, criticisms or praise, we would like to hear from you. The 2015 Race will be held on Sunday 20th September with an earlier start time of 11.30 … put it in your diary now. Thank you. Richard Stoodley richard@tickhillgp.com 07836 762672

Re-duction in falls is seen for participants in programs that include balance and moderateintensity muscle-strengthening activities and we are very careful at Move and Inspire Me to help you correct your own posture during class and become more aware of how you are performing activities that load the spine, shoulders, hips and knees in particular. Physically active adults have lower risk of depression and cognitive decline (declines with aging in thinking, learning, and judgment skills). Physical activity also may improve the quality of sleep. Added to this, it is possible to help speed the transmission of infor-mation (our central processing systems naturally slow with age) as you concentrate on new steps and learn new routines together (and have a big laugh together as half the class go the opposite way)! Although the social side of our weekly classes is mentioned last in this article, it should perhaps come first, since when we ask our clientele what they love most and what brings them back week after week and year after year, they always say “the fun and the friendship”. We would absolutely love to welcome you to our class, whatever your ability and experience of exercise in your life previously and would be de-lighted to offer you the opportunity to increase your physical as well as social confidence from as little as £3.50 per week.

One in three women is affected at some point by bladder, pelvic floor or prolapse symptoms. Often very distressing, these problems WILL NOT improve without action & can get worse as you get older.

WOULD YOU LIKE AN X RAY OR A SCAN?

Ask for Jenny Blizard or Kate Stower who are specialists in Women’s Health Physiotherapy including bladder / bowel problems, ante-natal and post natal care, sexual problems, pelvic & lower back pain

For people experiencing painful joint or spinal problems, the answer to this question is often yes. The belief is that if we could just see inside the body, the cause of the problem would be clear and the solution evident. If only it was this simple! Of course, x rays and scans are of great value in certain clinical situations e.g. fractures, osteoporosis and arthritic diseases. What they don’t do, however, is explain pain. The most likely finding following an x ray or scan is degenerative changes. Degenerative changes occur when joint surfaces become scuffed and less smooth or soft tissues such as discs become drier and less spongy. This is much like developing grey hairs and wrinkles. Genetics and lifestyle (e.g. smoking and poor diet) may speed up this process but degenerative changes will occur in all of us eventually. And so it cannot be possible for degenerative changes per se to cause pain otherwise our clinic would be full of over 55’s (it isn’t!) and the nation’s elderly would all be in agony (they aren’t!) Often there isn’t a direct relationship between x ray findings and a patient’s clinical presentation. A patient might have a hugely restricted and painful hip suggestive of severe osteoarthritis with little evidence on x ray. Conversely, a patient may have gross degenerative changes on x ray but complain of little more than a minor discomfort whilst running. So, rather than an x ray or scan, a thorough assessment and detailed examination is often far more useful in working out the cause of your problem and how best to treat it.

Seven patients gave us their mobile ‘phone numbers to pass to the practice and have their record updated. All patients are asked to let reception have up to date mobile numbers so that reminders re appointments can be sent. We are still trying to reduce the number of Did Not Attend Appointments to make it easier for patients in need to see a practitioner.

(Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.) The Patient Participation Group

held a combined a Health Information Day and a MacMillan Coffee Morning on Friday September 26th 2014 from 10 -12 at The Harworth Town Hall. We send our thanks to the following organisations and groups for their support:• • • • • • • • • • • • •

More than 80 customers attended the coffee morning. With a resulting £146 being raised for Macmillan Cancer Care. We were given 21 comments and feedback on the Medical Practice of which 3 negative comments had already been addressed by the medical practice. Suggestions for improvement were welcomed and disappointments were noted along with the praise and thanks which numbered 18. All comments have been passed back to the practice in an anonymous format. All responses will be published by the PPG. Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts and ideas. We also signed up 6 new members to our wider group. Using email these members along with all other members of the wider group will receive minutes of committee meetings, news and information as it becomes available and will be passed questionnaires as they become available. August saw a slight improvement but most patients will agree that 103 appointments booked but not attended at Tickhill in August a waste of 22.85 hours plus 64 appointments booked but not attended at The Colliery Surgery or 11.81 hours is still totally unacceptable. Please help us to reduce these statistics and in so doing make it easier for everyone who needs an appointment to get one. News The Practice has signed up to the ‘I want Great Care Scheme’. Through this all patients will be given the chance to respond and comment, after every appointment, on the care and treatment they received. A summary of these comments will be produced every month by a third party agency and we hope to pass these back to you as they become available. All GPs go through an annual appraisal; the results of the last appraisal for the GPs in this Practice are as follows:91% of respondents got to speak to a GP 75% of respondents said it was easy to get through to the Surgery 91% of respondents find surgery staff helpful 45% of respondents usually get their preferred GP 61% of respondents said the nurses were good at involving patients in their care 58% of respondents waited 15m or less after their appointment time. November this year will see National Self Care Week with this in mind please ensure you have had your Annual Flu Vaccination which is available to all patients over 65 Years of age plus some younger patients who are carers or have certain illnesses. Please contact reception to check if you are eligible and to book an appointment. St Mary’s School Harvest Festival at St Mary’s Church. On 26th September Tickhill St Mary’s Year 4 class presented this year’s Harvest Festival service at St Mary’s Church. Our children learnt about the importance of harvest, how we celebrate it and most importantly, why we celebrate it. In preparation, the children created lots of wonderful things to decorate our stage. These included fruit and vegetable scarecrows, harvest posters and harvest wreaths to express some of the things we are thankful for. “The wreaths were really fun to make. I enjoyed going outside and picking real leaves to decorate them” Thomas, Year 4. “We enjoyed using ICT to look for different fruit and vegetables. We liked sticking them all together creating our scarecrows, they looked really funny!” Marnie and William, Year 4. Year 4 talked about the importance of our blessings, the blessings we have around us every single day. They taught us this through a drama based performance of the classic tale ‘The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse’. “It was lovely! We were all really nervous but we got through it together” Stella, Year 4. Not only did we get to sing many wonderful songs and present the Harvest festival but also had the opportunity to bake bread with Reverend Chris. For this, Year 4 teamed up with Year 6 to measure out ingredients and bake bread for our harvest. “My favourite part was kneading the dough… It was so sticky!” Amber, Year 4. Overall this was a very enjoyable afternoon for everyone involved and on behalf of Year 4 and Tickhill St Mary’s CE Primary and Nursery School we would like to thank everyone who generously donated to the Doncaster Food Bank, helping those less fortunate.

Estfeld School– If you go down to the woods today…

you might just meet a Gruffalo! Our Reception Class took their first educational visit recently. The children visited Sherwood Pines Forest, where they learned all about the forest and its inhabitants. Autumn is a wonderful time to be in the forest as so much is changing and the colours seem to be at their best at this time of year - there are logs to sit on for story time and to balance on; treasures to collect as they fall to the forest floor; a glimpse of sunshine filtering through the trees to brighten up the day.

Of course the primary function of Sherwood Pines Forest is to produce wood; it is a managed forest and the children also learned about the vast variety of uses that the wood produced has.

In the morning the children engaged in some woodland art. The group worked together to make a big picture of a tree, using materials foraged form the forest such as twigs, pine needles, pine cones, leaves, tree bark and pebbles. It was a great joint effort and forest floor made a perfect canvas. The children also learned about the many inhabitantss of the forest and why the forest is such an important place for wildlife.

TICKHILL TODAY DAY

After lunch the children went on a “Gruffalo hunt”, which is a new trail installed to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the publishing of this popular children’s book. A school trip for the younger pupils is never complete without a visit to the play park and this was the perfect end to the day. There were many tired arms and legs and heavy eyes on the return coach journey, with just enough time for a snooze. What an exciting and busy day! If you haven’t visited Sherwood Pines Forest we thoroughly recommend it.

Hello I’m Belle, I came to Mayflower as a puppy and I had extremely deformed front legs which have now been corrected. I am a wonderful, friendly Lurcher who only wants to please. I am looking for a new home because I wasn’t getting along with other dogs on a walk but I am responding very well to my carers training. I can get a little over the top with my willingness though and I will need firm leadership. I will need to be an only dog but I do behave extremely well in the home and I am very loving towards children. If you would like to know anymore about me please don’t hesitate to ask one of my carers.

Cleo Female 14 July 2014 3 Months ? Yes Yes

Cleo was taken into care with her sister because their previous owner hadn’t realised how much hard work two small kittens were. Kittens of this age can be very destructive and need careful handling and socialisation if they are to grow into sociable, loving young cats. Cleo is very loving and would happily be a lapcat given the chance. She loves to play with other cats so it would be nice if she could be rehomed with a friend Her sister has been rehomed but Cleo is still waiting for her new family to arrive. Please don’t make her wait too long.

The Wizards of Oz welcome you to the Travellers Rest in Tickhill.

Australian Chef Tony V and his partner Graeme have bought their wealth of experience and flair for fine foods to the Travellers Rest. The pair have settled well into community life in Tickhill and are endeavouring to use our local community stores to source all the ingredients to fill the menu. Everything is cooked fresh and to order and for this reason they do ask that where possible you do book ahead so that they can be sure to be prepared for your visit. They have also employed local staff and continue to seek out local services and businesses as the need arises. The coming weeks see their first Halloween Family event, and their first Ladies Day which will be a regular event fundraising for local good causes.

Tony & Graeme look forward to welcoming you to the Travellers Rest where they extend a very warm Aussie welcome. 36

Tickhill Bowling Club The green at Tithe Lane closed on the 4th October and our season is now finished and we are all looking forward to the Spring. I was hoping to be able to report on the position of each of our four teams in their particular leagues but, at the time of writing, not all the results are in so I will need to update you in the December edition of Tickhill Today. On the results so far published on the DDBA web site, three of our teams seem to be well placed – but we had better wait the final result. The DDBA AGM was held on Monday 13th October, their presentation night will be held on Friday 14th November and their next general meeting is scheduled for Monday 12th January.

Tickhill Male Voice Choir “Cry Freedom” was the title of our Annual Concert. As it is 100 years since the start of the “Great War” the Choir wished to remember in song all those who gave their lives for freedom. The programme included songs from “Les Miserables”, a tribute to Nelson Mandela, “Speed Your Journey” about people being forced from their homes and Dvorak’s Largo “Goin’ Home”, expressing the nostalgia everyone feels for home.

Telephone: 07891 907733 T Favourable comments were received from the audience who enjoyed the theme and variety of the whole programme. Looking to the future, we will be holding our Christmas Concert on Saturday 13th December in the Tickhill Methodist Church. We are always looking for new members, so if you enjoy singing just come along for an informal visit to any of our rehearsals. These are normally held every Monday night at 7.30pm in the schoolroom at the back of the Methodist Church. Just listen or chat to some of the members, there is no obligation and you will be made welcome.

A contrast in mood involved readings and some lighter songs, examples being Moonlight Serenade and Blue Moon. There was audience participation in “Senzenina” and “Steal Away” played on guitar, with everyone singing The Choir performs at a range of venues, for various the chorus. Some all-time favourites from Al Jolson were groups and organisations. Enquiries for bookings can be made on the internet by entering “Tickhill Male enjoyed by everyone in a singalong. Voice Choir”, or telephoning 01302 743468 T The performance concluded with “O Valiant Hearts” and “For The Fallen”, tributes to all those involved in the fight for equality, democracy and freedom. 42 TICKHILL TODAY TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278 | www.facebook.com/todaymags

ANOTHER SEASON BEGINS. It is 37 years since Tickhill Music Society was formed and in their first season there was a concert by the Boyce Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Peter Bear. On Friday 19 September the orchestra was again in Tickhill Parish Church, this time conducted by the ebullient David Allison. Appropriately the concert began with a symphony by William Boyce (1711 - 1799), the fourth of his eight symphonies. Next came a favourite Elgar composition for strings - the lovely Serenade, Op. 20.

Tickhill Music Society Friday, 14th November 2014 at 8.00 p.m. St. Mary's Primary School Joseph Houston The talented young pianist will perform works by Scarlatti, Beethoven (the Appassionata), Schubert, Chopin, Liszt and Debussy.

It is often said that Elgar’s music breathes the English countryside and many associate the tranquil slow movement with the Malvern Hills area. The final item in the first half was the six-movement suite by Peter Warlock (whose real name was Philip Heseltine). All the movements are based on Renaissance dances, with the Pavane featuring pizzicato playing. The second half began with a Concerto Grosso by Handel. This was followed by the tuneful Holberg Suite by Grieg and the concert ended in rousing style with ‘Palladio’ by the Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. Under the flamboyant conducting by David Allison the Boyce Orchestra is a smooth and accomplished music making group. The excellent playing combined with a programme full of variety and interest made for a very satisfying evening of music. This was a splendid start to another season by Tickhill Music Society.

Garden View

Hedge Your Bets! Ok, so it’s a terrible heading, but November is the perfect time for planting new hedges, and at this time of year it’s a very safe bet. Prior to the use of containerised plants (which can be planted at almost any time of the year) planting between November and March was a gardeners only option, and as far as the plants are concerned it’s still the best by far. When plants are dormant (asleep) they will hardly even notice being moved, and by spring when their new leaves emerge their roots will have already pushed through the surrounding soil in their new home. Hedges are often thought of as hard work, time consuming and have been at the centre of heated neighbourly debates (whether it’s cutting them too low or letting them grow too high). They are great for blocking out unsightly views, adding privacy, and also make a wonderful place for wildlife to live, rest and nest. For the past 3 years we’ve had a variety of birds nesting in our Yew hedge and the addition of extra life in the garden always pleases me. If you’re looking for a quick solution to a green screen, then you have two options, either instant (such as a 2m high instant hedge, pre grown, trained and clipped, perfect for the impatient gardener), or Leylandii conifers. As I write this I can hear 48

TICKHILL TODAY

the screams, but it really is the best option for speed and it’s costeffective. Do be aware that legally, as of a couple of years ago, you have to keep its growth contained to 2m high if on a boundary (this does not apply to any other species). For the more patient gardener, try the classic evergreen Yew hedging. Like most beautiful things in life, it’s more expensive to buy. It’s also slower growing (15-30cm per year), but does only require cutting once per year in September, and will provide you with the most beautiful hedge. I also favour the evergreen Portuguese laurel, which has a smaller leaf than the more common cherry laurel, or Beech if it doesn’t need to be evergreen. For a smaller hedge it has to be Box, but alternatives include Lavender, Berberis, Lonicera, and for the perfect no-cut low hedge go for a small Hebe, (simply choose a variety which only grows to the height you actually want the hedge to grow to). Whichever hedge you choose, the ground preparation should be the same. For containerised, bare-root or root-balled hedges, dig out a trench which follows the line of the proposed hedge, this should be at least one and a half times wider and deeper than the rootball. Fork over the base of the trench and return some of the soil, so that when

you plant the hedge it sits at the same level as previously planted (i.e. not too deep). Backfill with the removed soil, add a handful of bonemeal per plant, and dig in. Firm with your boot then water well before mulching with 5cm of compost, manure or bark clippings. Happy winter gardening

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee. .

Even more new Classes & Workshops at Tall Trees Yoga & Pilates Studio “Arm balances also require a certain amount of balance which can prevent falls and broken bones which is important especially as we get older. Open Door Auctions success Open Door Auctions, the local family-run property business specialising in residential sales, has announced the success of its latest auctions – and is encouraging would-be sellers to come along to its upcoming events. The firm hosts bi-monthly auctions in Retford and Gainsborough, and has sold more than 110 properties so far this year. Including 27 homes via two auctions in one week this October, achieving an average of £11,000 above the guide price.

Scooter Safe ...making you safer

The success of Open Door shows that residential auctions are becoming a very popular way to sell property; in fact, in the first six months of 2014, there was a massive 135% increase in sales by auction compared to the first six months of 2013. Recent trends have also shown that more and more vendors are taking “normal” houses to auction, not just homes in need of renovation as seen on the daytime TV show Homes Under the Hammer. This is largely due to protracted sales times: at the moment, the average length of time to sell a house is 13 weeks in Gainsborough, and 19 weeks in both Retford and Worksop.

Free Mobility Safety Course & Crime Prevention

Graeme Naish, co-founder of Open Door Auctions, comments: “Selling at auction can be a great way of making sure that you get the best price and avoid any last-minute snags. With property auctions becoming more and more popular, the increase in demand for homes often leads to prices being pushed up, which is great for vendors who can also protect themselves through setting a reserve price. You also have the benefit of knowing that once the hammer falls, the contract is legally binding and the buyer has to complete within the agreed timeframe, usually 28 days.”

Friday 21st November • 1 till 3pm

“Selling your home at auction is becoming a successful way to move up the property ladder, so we’re inviting anybody interested in auctions to come to our next events in Gainsborough on Thursday 27 November and Retford on Tuesday 2 December.” On the open market, potential buyers are able to make an offer before their own home is on the market. This can lead to complicated chains and a protracted sales process. By focusing on proceedable cash buyers, completing surveys before an auction and requiring a 10% deposit on exchange, auctioneers are able to avoid these sorts of problems. So for vendors looking for a fresh approach for selling their home, and vendors who want a quick, legally-binding sale, selling a home at auction could be the solution. This, combined with the possibility of seeing the price driven up by enthusiastic purchasers bidding against each other, means that selling property at auction is, for many people, a positive way to go. For more information about the upcoming auctions or to arrange a free property valuation, call the team at Open Door Auctions on 01777 712614 or email help@opendoorauctions. co.uk http://opendoorauctions.co.uk/ T 52

Yearbook 2014

Ted Elliott Millennium Knock-Out Competition FINALS DAY SUNDAY 14th SEPTEMBER This month the report for the main final. The eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed that last month only the Plate final and the third place play off were reported! MS SPORTS CUP FINAL Ancient Juniors 128 for 5 - Friday Fruitcakes 131 for 5 With both openers retiring on 25 the Ancient Juniors were on 65 before the first wicket fell but despite a good stand at the end by James Hodge and Rees Miles there were too many singles and 128 was not enough. For the Fruitcakes Mark Sissons and Jon Boden both retired on 25 but Mark returned after the fall of the fifth wicket to take his score up to 44 not out with a six to win the match. After the Cup Final organiser Phil Thomas said a few words in the warmth of the lounge thanking the umpires, Graham Mickley and Alan McMillan and the junior team organisers who had enabled a number of promising young cricketers to enjoy playing with seniors.

In shape and size it is envisaged that this will be similar to Tickhill Today. We are hoping that all groups, societies and organisations will contribute a page giving an outline of their activities, day/time of meeting with a flavour of what’s to come in 2015 (from late March onwards). We have a good idea of what Tickhill was like in 1914, and this booklet could be a useful document in terms of comparison to all we now enjoy about our community. We hope it will also be a useful reference point now for all our groups/businesses. A letter will be produced and circulated giving details of format required. Please ask for a copy in early November if you haven’t received one. (We don’t want to miss anyone out!) Businesses should please contact Barbara Butterworth – brm@ enterpriseaccountancy.co.uk or telephone 742700 with details of Name of Business / Type of Business and telephone number for inclusion in the Directory of the Yearbook. We plan that this booklet will be delivered free to every home in Tickhill during early March. This is a tickhill together initiative – something we hope will inform and promote our community. We’re grateful for the additional ideas so far suggested. Anymore? Keep them coming. Contact John Marsden on 744142 T

The competition was re-named the Ted Elliott Millennium this year in memory of the landlord of The Oak who had also previously encouraged the Travellers Rest to play and Anne Elliott kindly presented the trophies – the MS Sports Plate to skipper of the Young Pretenders Joel Martin and the MS Sports Cup to Richard Coyle captain of the Friday Fruitcakes. The players enjoyed a drink or two after their matches courtesy of Trevor Reeve’s Pentagon Group – many thanks for your kindness and support Trevor. Phil Thomas T

The Christmas Tickhill & District Lions Art & Food Market and Harley Open Studios This year’s bonfire display will be held on Saturday 8th November at the Tickhill Cricket Club on Alderson Drive. We have a new firework supplier who has promised spectacular displays.

The event is jointly being organised by the Tickhill and District Lions and Tickhill Cricket Club. Entrance is free but the Lions will be rattling buckets and, as ever all the proceeds will go towards deserving causes within the local community. Your donations are greatly appreciated.

Saturday 29th - Sunday 30th November 2014 Whether you’re looking for a gift for the guy who has everything, or something extra special for someone extra special, you are sure to find the perfect present (and at prices to suit all pockets). There will be a wide range of unusual and hand-made gifts, with 70 artists and designers and a food market fit for the most fanciful foodie. This is seriously special Christmas shopping. Each market stall has been selected by experts from The Harley Gallery and Welbeck Farm Shop. And with artisan production from the Welbeck Estate itself, visitors can expect to choose from a great range of unique products that have been hand crafted with care and skill. As well as the art market The Harley Artists’ Studios will open their doors for the weekend, you can explore the studio complex to visit these fascinating workspaces and buy directly from the makers. The Studios are only open to the public twice a year and can be found within the 5th Duke of Portland’s Victorian Tan Gallop and Kitchen Garden.

Proceedings will begin at 5pm with the lighting of the Bonfire followed by two firework displays. There will also be a BBQ selling locally supplied sausages and beef burgers.

The firework display will be on the playing area with excellent visibility all-round the boundary so young children will be able to find somewhere with a good view. Novelties and glow sticks will be available but health and safety rules do not allow the lighting of sparklers and with the Cricket Club bar open, the bringing of your own cans etc. will not be allowed. We would ask everyone to respect the hallowed turf of the cricket field and to please use the litter bins. Aside from the Bonfire the Lions Christmas draw tickets are now available with lots of great prizes on offer including a cycle voucher for all those budding Tour de France enthusiasts. Ticket will be on sale throughout the village and on our stall at the Late Night Shopping event. The draw takes place on Tuesday 16th December. If you planning to attend the Tickhill late Night Shopping event on Thursday 27th November look out for the Lions Christmas float.

WADWORTH VILLAGE HALL Christmas Fayre Sunday, 16th November - 2.00 to 4.00 pm Yes, it's that time of year again. Everyone welcome to attend. Free entry. Refreshments available. There are still tables to rent at £5 each. Please contact Maureen on 01302 852874.

Wadworth School Our New Head Teacher We asked Mr McLean how he feels about behaviour in the school. He replied: “Behaviour in the classrooms is absolutely fantastic. Children listen to adults and each other, they work together brilliantly and they are always looking for ways to make the school a good place to be. Sometimes playtimes and lunchtimes can be a bit difficult for some children but we are working hard as a team to help those children manage their play.” Next we inquired him about how he thinks the school could be improved. He responded with: “I think school could be improved by the teachers listening to the children more. We need, as teachers, to provide ways for more children to show what they know and what the can do. Then we need to make sure that we can organise ways to help the children learn from where they are. We could also use modern technology such as laptops and tablets more often.”

Jumble Sale Saturday, 29th November - 2.30 pm. You never know, you may just find a good bargain for Christmas! Always plenty of variety and proceeds go to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Thank you to all who attended our previous popular quiz nights and also the beetle drive. Regular quiz nights with fish and chip supper will resume in January once all the Christmas and New Year festivities are over. You will be glad to have a change from turkey by then! Look out for our dates in the December issue. T

YCA Sixty-five members and four visitors were present at our meeting on Thursday October 9th to hear a very interesting talk about a thousand mile charity

walk beyond the far fells. Our next meeting is on November 13th. The speaker will be Janet Stain and her subject is 'the History of the Wedding Dress.' Marcia J. Lingard ( secretary)

Voglia d’Italia

We then asked do you think the school has made progress since you have been here. Mr McLean answered: “So far I have tried to focus on giving the children more responsibility for making decisions for themselves. I think it is important for a school to help children to become responsible adults who make positive choices. One or two things in school needed changing because children were being expected to ask for permission for things that they should have been expected to do for themselves.”

“Tickhill Discover its Past”

Surprise, surprise! Having ordered 400 copies of “TICKHILL – discover its past” which we thought would last us well into the New Year, possibly longer, our entire stock was sold in just over two weeks! We apologise to everybody who had to wait a little whilst a reprint was produced but hopefully we now have sufficient stock in KSM and the Library for the foreseeable future – unless you the public prove us wrong again! We would like to thank all those who have helped with the production, distribution and selling of the book, particularly the staffs of the KSM Card Gallery and the Library. The Book Launch on September 18th went smoothly with the Methodist Schoolroom and Lounge full but not uncomfortably so. Lord and Lady Scarbrough were our Guests of Honour, Lord Scarbrough opened the meeting followed by Steve 60

local History Society

Payne who spoke briefly about the “book project” and Carol Hill, the author who gave a thirty minute illustrated talk on 900 years of Tickhill history. How she managed to make a “fast forward” presentation so interesting and understandable remains a mystery. After that free refreshments were served in the Lounge whilst members and guests bought or collected signed copies of the book and Lord and Lady Scarbrough chatted informally to some of those whose work had contributed to it. Thanks to everybody who worked hard to make the evening a success. Our November meeting will be on Thursday 21st November when Valerie Oxley and Julia Colver will talk about Firbeck Hall in the 18th Century drawing from material in a

personal journal of the period. This should be an interesting insight into the history of a local property. As usual the meeting will be in the Methodist Schoolroom, Northgate at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) and visitors will be welcome.

Tickhill Town Council - NOVEMBER 2014

This month sees the turning on of the Christmas lights and the late night shopping and hopefully we will be able to announce the winner of the Best Dressed Window competition. On this evening I start looking forward to the Carol service on Christmas Eve and whilst in attendance at the Carol Service last year a gentleman asked me why we were all standing there on such a cold night. My reply was “because we can and because we live in such a warm and friendly community”. I later stood on the Buttercross steps with our Mayor and I suddenly knew what it was all about. In every direction I looked crowds filled our streets. We strive for an enriched community, sometimes getting knocked back along the way, but I can only hope we will continue to grow from strength to strength. Thank you. While I am on this subject may I say a special thank you to our community members for organising such wonderful events throughout the year? We have the Horticultural show, the Tickhill Grand Prix Cycle Race, the Scarecrow festival and the Easter Extravaganza, the Scouts Gala the endless streams of coffee mornings at the Parish Room and Methodist Church, the W.I. market for Friday markets and Paula for this publication, plus Tickhill in Bloom for providing us with such wonderful floral displays throughout the year. I know I have only mentioned a few and the list is endless, but Thank you all for making Tickhill what it is. 62

As you all know we have a Councillor who litter picks on a volunteer basis and like all of you he is dedicated to his work. He has asked me to include a staggering statistic for you perusal: It is no small problem...and this is designed to illustrate to smokers the impact on the litter. In London alone it is estimated that 6 million cigarette ends are dropped each year contributing to the £3.8million bill to clean its streets every year. Smokers usually drop their cigarette ends subconsciously and do not consider it as litter. Our litter picker in Tickhill has collected over 900 bags of rubbish in 31 weeks and at 4kg approx per bag it equates to 3.6tons of rubbish from Tickhill. An alarming figure! Unfortunately we seem to have some trade waste included in this, so if you are that trader please use your own method of disposal.

Tickhill Cricket Club After many years of hard work, fundraising and form filling for grants, Tickhill Cricket Club have managed to raise funds to rebuild our falling down changing rooms. Work will start in November on this massive task, however we still need to carry on with the fundraising to enable us to furnish the new build and update the existing function room and bar.

Rachel's Futterweenies class on a Friday morning is at 9.30 a.m. This is a class for Mums and Tots - and is great fun for all! Term time only though at the moment. (07766 076205)

The wi-fi saga continues ...... on and on (and on and on) Apparently our wiring is not quite in the right place, so another visit/another day/another engineer - and more lost hours! The next date will be our third supposed installation date - watch this space (but don't hold your breath!!). Luckily we can exist perfectly well without the technology so we'll just carry on regardless!

Our weekly Coffee Mornings are on every Saturday from 10 - 12. A nice way to break up your shopping with a coffee and a natter.

Our lovely Hall is busy again in November.
