Can you bake, make preserves, grow plants and vegetables or love craft work? Why not join us either as a producer or a customer!
“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dreamC.”S. Lewis Once again, the year is racing by, Halloween and Bonfire Night are upon us and Christmas is only just around the corner. Lots of activities and events are being promoted on these pages – we are lucky to live in such active communities. By the time you receive this issue, the chances are the clocks will have gone back and the evenings will be drawing in. If you receive an early magazine delivery – don’t forget to change your clocks first thing on Sunday 27th October. Are you getting organised yet? As usual I’m not! Last month I urged you to consider anything you wanted to get done or achieve before Christmas and to get yourself booked in with the many businesses offering their services within these pages. For many things there will still be time, but don’t wait too long! The December issue will be delivered to you late November, if you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 8th November. This will of course be the Christmas issue, and it is always a jam-packed issue, full of annual events, Christmas Fairs and celebrations. Please do ensure that you get your items to me in good time if you have something you would like included.

Hello, I am Katie and as part of my new role as a Vicecaptain for Bircotes Swimming Club I’d like to share both our most recent achievements, as well as an insight into the experience of a member of our club. Being a member of Bircotes Swimming Club provides many unique skills and experiences for children of all ages. By swimming with us you learn the competitive side of the sport and become able to represent both the club, but also yourself, with skills that could take you far in the sport; many of our swimmers are at county level, and some regional too. I enjoy swimming for the club because, as well as my own personal achievements, I have an influence and role in the accomplishments of others, especially the younger teammates I work with. Part of my role means I help to encourage, mentor and guide younger swimmers regularly, both in training and competition. I find this opportunity very rewarding and I am proud to be a member of the club helping others. An example of these achievements can be shown in our latest Time Trials where we saw some fantastic results. 46 swimmers took part in the trials, 5 of which for the first time. The trials are a great for our newer swimmers, that may have not competed before, as they provide an opportunity to do so in a fun and enjoyable environment surrounded by supportive teammates. Results from the trials were impressive with 95% of swimmers achieving at least one personal best. Furthermore, 20% of these had a clean sweep of PB’s in each event swum. These results were brilliant and we strive to continue with more achievements like these in the future. If you would like to visit our Club, please email the Club Secretary for more information and to arrange a trial, on bircotesswimclub@gmail.com

Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir
Due to a reduction in our membership at the moment, caused by ill health and people moving away, recruitment is on our minds at the moment.
We are always eager to welcome new members and invite men of any age to come and join us so do come along and enjoy the camaraderie of singing in a four part choir (Bass, Baritone & two Tenor parts). It has been proven that singing regularly can improve one’s health and wellbeing. All prospective new members are most welcome to attend our rehearsals which are held each Monday evening in the Schoolroom to the rear of the Methodist Church, Northgate, Tickhill from 7.30 to 9.30 pm. Remember, it is not necessary to have the ability to read music or to have any previous experience, but we would be pleased to welcome anyone who does have experience in singing with other choirs. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact our secretary, Phillip Randall – telephone 01302 743468 or our chairman, Martin Lord – telephone 07588 887771 or just come along to one of our weekly rehearsals. We look forward to seeing you there!! On Wednesday 9th October, in remembrance of one of our well regarded past members, George Boothman, we performed several well known items at Flower Park Care Home, Denaby Main, led by our Music Director, Gwyneth Platt. It was a fitting tribute to George who had been a member of our choir for many years and loved his singing.
We have an upcoming concert on Friday 1st November at Bawtry Methodist Church commencing at 7.00 pm. Tickets are priced at £5.00 (including refreshments) and are available from either our Secretary Phillip Randall (01302 743468), members of Bawtry Methodist Church or at the door. On Saturday 30th November we are hosting a Choral Workshop, led by Steven Roberts, from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm at the Village Hall, Wadworth, DN11 9BW with other male voice choirs invited. The event is open to anyone wishing to attend at a cost of £15.00 per person. Tea or coffee will be provided during registration from 9.30 am onwards and Lunch can be pre-ordered at an additional cost of £5.00. If this event is anywhere near as good as the previous one we hosted then it should not be missed! Anyone wishing to attend should contact our secretary, Phillip Randall – telephone 01302 743468. After the Choral Workshop we then commence our very busy Christmas programme – look out for further details. DO NOT MISS our Annual Christmas Concert at Tickhill Methodist Church on Saturday 14th December entitled “Christmas Box”.
Remember Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir is available to perform concerts for any occasion – please contact Martin on 07588 887771 or Phillip on 01302 743468, all enquiries and bookings would be welcomed.

Inspiration Assemblies at Tickhill Estfeld As part of the curriculum at Estfeld we teach children about the opportunities available to them beyond school and in the future. It is never too early to start developing an interest in possible careers. What better way than to be visited by somebody that they know as a parent or carer of their friends, but also to realise that they have another role in the world of work.
Since last year we have had regular visitors to school and they have lead an “Inspiration Assembly”, telling the pupils all about their profession, and why they enjoy it and feel that it is worthwhile. The pupils also have the opportunity to ask questions, which they love. In the last academic year, we were visited by a nurse practitioner, a social worker, an associate director from Coca-Cola, a dentist, a musician, a solicitor, a doctor and a banking professional. We are very grateful to them for taking the time to speak to our pupils and hopefully planting a seed in their minds. Our first visitor of this academic year was Rebecca Reeve who runs her own business RJR Fitness, offering personal training and exercise classes. The

children heard all about the importance of being active and fit and about how to set goals. Thank you to Mrs. Reeve for helping to inspire our pupils. Earlier in the year we were also visited by an ex-pupil Christina Smith who works for NASA as part of the Mars rover project. Our pupils were delighted to see photographs of Christina when she was a pupil here, and told the pupils that she could remember learning about the planets when she was a pupil in Mrs. Driver’s class. We would be delighted to hear from other ex-pupils. Please get in touch and tell us what you are doing. And finally, if you are a parent or carer of one of our pupils, an ex-pupil or member of the local community, and think that this is something that you would like to do, please contact school.

CAUDA EQUINA SYNDROME – A SPINAL EMERGENCY One of our receptionists, the lovely Liz, recently asked me about CAUDA EQUINA SYNDROME (CES) having read about it in a newspaper/magazine article. It is a rare but serious condition which can be tricky to diagnose. Delayed diagnosis can lead to long term life changing complications…educating clinicians and the public alike is vital to raise awareness and initiate timely intervention. Cauda equina means ‘horses tail’ and describes the bundle of nerves at the very bottom of the spinal cord. Compression of these nerves can be caused by numerous conditions and requires urgent surgical intervention. There are some distinct symptoms that should lead to a suspicion of CES… Bilateral sciatica – nerve pain affecting both legs Saddle anaesthesia (numbness/loss of sensation) – your saddle is any part of your body that would be in contact with the saddle of a horse and includes you buttocks, anus, genitals and inner thigh Altered bladder function – difficulty initiating urination, inability to urinate, loss of sensation during urination, inability to feel when your bladder is full Loss of anal tone – resulting in the inability to prevent a bowel movement or loss of sensation when opening your bowel or using toilet paper Sexual problems – loss of sensation during intercourse or an inability to achieve an erection or ejaculate If you have any of these symptoms then you need to attend A+E where further investigations can determine the cause. CES is rare, and only a small percentage (10%) of people who are suspected of having CES actually do…however, time is of the essence and any degree of suspicion should be acted upon immediately.

Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust North Notts Local Group Talks
The November meeting will feature a talk by Dr David Parkin entitled Britain’s Seabirds: Threats and Challenges. This talk was advertised in March but, unfortunately, had to be cancelled. It will focus on the north-east Atlantic Ocean which is home to millions of seabirds; Britain and Ireland play host to some truly magnificent colonies. David will describe methods of monitoring these colonies and show how changes in the numbers can sometimes be related to problems in the oceans themselves.
Doncaster Spanish Society Presents... T
Doncaster Spanish Society are presenting the second event on their Winter / Spring calendar entitled – The Life and Works of the Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) - undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary talents of her era. Her relatively short life, was dogged by a prolonged serious injury, disease, and a somewhat troubled marriage. Through all this adversity, she triumphed to produce works of stunning surrealism. This is an illustrated talk, given by society members Maria Theresa Sikora and Jean Clark, in both English and Spanish. There’s no need to understand the language, but it’s still a chance to improve on what you do know for those who can speak a little.
If Spanish culture and language are of interest to you, then this is an opportunity not to be missed. Please come along, you are most welcome. The venue is : The Eastfield Restaurant, Doncaster Deaf Trust, Leger Way, Doncaster, 7.30-9.30pm, Friday 22nd November. New members ( £18 p.a. / couples £30 p.a. ) and visitors £4. Light refreshments are provided, and there is also ample free parking. For more information contact : Jean on 01709 812440 or Jackie on 01302 344822

LI O NS in Tickhill & Wadworth Local people need you
Can you believe that in the 21st century we still have people sleeping on the floor with no carpets, just a blanket and pillow for comfort. There are people who, through no fault of their own, cannot feed their families. There are young single mums, disowned by their families, trying to hold down a job and be a good parent despite little support.
There are people with disabilities and elderly people who have given everything for this country who now find themselves alone and socially isolated. This isn’t in some far off, third world country but right here across the district we all call our home. We don’t make a ‘song and dance’ about the support your generosity allows us to provide but believe me, it is very much appreciated by the people we help with food and the basic home comforts we all take for granted. We also support school projects that broaden the minds of our youngsters. We also support a wide variety of community groups. All of these support local people and make our community a place we are all proud to call our home.
We Need You!
Would you like to get involved with raising money to support people in need? Do you like to socialise and have some fun whilst helping others? We are 34 men and women from diverse backgrounds and ages from about 30 upwards with one thing in common – we want to make a difference by helping people and community groups across our district. We need like minded people like YOU! If you would like to get involved or if you think we may be able to help you or a community project please get in touch. Call in to Rossington Labour 5th Nov 8.30pm or Royal Oak 19th Nov 8.30pm to have an informal chat.

Tickhill Bowling Club T
Jones & Co Solicitors who sponsored our new Bowling Club shirts this season, came down after work on Thursday 12th September where our club members teamed up with them to give them a friendly game and some tuition on bowling. None of them had ever given it a try but we all had a good evening with some promise of some talented bowlers, so hope to see you all next season for another try. I would like to thank Ranskill Bowling Club for their hospitality when we went on Monday 16th September for a friendly game, was a lovely afternoon in the sunshine and what a lovely green and Pavilion and surrounds they have. This was a return match as they came to our Green March time. Not a lot going on at the Bowling Club in November seems the Season went very quickly. A reminder that our A.G.M is on Monday 18th November 2019, 1pm in the Cricket Club. We will be taking a Poppy Wreath to be laid at the Cenotaph. Which will be on Sunday the 10th November for Remembrance Sunday. Keep checking Tickhill Bowling Club Website for updates on Christmas Lunch in December and quiz night in January. Would also like to thank Captains and Vice Captains for their continuing support and all the members of the Bowling Club who give 100% to our amazing club. Sometimes, our speakers come to present an evening on a topic that we aren’t necessarily interested in. I admit it, the visit of Wack’s Wicked Plants at the end of September to tell us about Carnivorous Plants wasn’t exactly something that was at the top of my ‘wants’ list. However, the sheer variety of plants that they brought to show us showed the beauty of many of those plants – and the Venus Fly Traps, which are probably the ones we’ve all heard of, were both only a minor part of the variety that they showed us, but also among the smallest. Some looked perhaps a little untidy – but that was caused by their natural function of trapping and devouring flies – and apparently some of them were capable of some surprisingly large things such as mice! It seems next door’s cat is safe, though! Anyone who took a late holiday and didn’t get to the meeting missed a real treat – and these plants would be a great way of keeping the number of wasps down if you were having a picnic in your garden next summer! It seems amazing that we have suddenly gone from the height of summer to almost being at the end of the year, with only a couple of meetings remaining before Christmas. On 31st October, Don Witton makes a welcome return with “A calendar of colour”. Our November meeting is, as usual, delayed by a week due to the late night shopping and the switching on of the Christmas lights in the village (sorry for mentioning the “C” word this early!), so our last meeting of the year will be on December 5th, when John and Gail Summerfield have a presentation entitled “Winter Whys and a Quiz”.
Invite you to join us for an
Even if you haven’t yet joined the Horticultural Society, you can come as a visitor for only £3 a time – and if you like it, you can always join as a full member! Meetings are held in the Methodist Church’s Schoolroom and start at 7.15pm, finishing around 9 o’clock. We love to see new faces, so if you need something to do on those dark evenings, why not come along and join us? Finally, we still have our pre-Christmas visit to Harewood House to look forward to, which is on Sunday, 24th November. There are only a couple of places left on the coach, so if you want to have a great day out, do a bit of shopping and see Harewood House decorated up for Christmas (sorry, I used that word again...), then don’t wait too long!

On Wings of Song T
On a fine September evening, in the imposing surroundings of Tickhill Parish Church (still decorated from a wedding earlier in the day), a large and appreciative audience from Tickhill Music Society was treated to a rich and varied programme by the Bel Canto Choir, under the energetic baton of Robert Webb and skilfully accompanied by Jonathan Gooing. The choir made a stirring entry with the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah, and progressed through other sacred pieces from the past by Mozart and Verdi to sacred pieces of the present by Karl Jenkins and John Rutter. Following the interval the choir demonstrated its versatility with songs from the shows and film, starting with a clever adaptation by Robert Webb of songs from The Sound of Music, at one point requiring the choir to switch from singing to whistling. Whether performing oratorio or light music the choir sang with confidence and clarity, admirably accompanied by Jonathan Gooing, who was equally at home on church organ and electronic keyboard. It can be stated with confidence that music from Goldfinger has never before been heard in the parish church, let alone at a Tickhill Music Society concert. It was that sort of evening.

Dear friends
T
This is how I explain Halloween to children: I say ‘Before there was Christmas trees and sparkly snow scenes and surprise presents’ - ‘There was a baby in a stable.’ (I say the words very slowly and clearly and place a bauble, a snowflake, a brightly wrapped box and a nativity scene slowly and deliberately on the table before them, giving them space to make the connection.)
Here for you, your Tickhill & Wadworth Ward Councillors T
Then I say ‘Before pumpkins and dressing up and tricks and treats’ and place a pumpkin, mask and Halloween mega bucket of sweets on the table. ‘There was a time of remembering…..’ And this is true. Halloween – All Hallows E’en (Eve.) All Hallows? Yes, you have heard the word before, elsewhere. It is part of the prayer that Jesus taught his followers, which we know as the Lord’s Prayer or the Our Father… ‘Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name’ – blessed be thy name. All Hallows, a blessed time. For this is the time in the churches year when we remember the dead; the saints and martyrs and all the faithful departed. The inhabitants of heaven. The blessed ones. In all our local churches there will be times throughout this season when we remember our dear departed loved ones and also those who gave their lives for the greater good in the two world wars and in other conflicts since. You would be warmly welcomed if you would care to join us. It is a time for remembering… Because this is a holy season it is important that we mark and celebrate it. We must attend to our internal spiritual life. We must make time for remembrance and thanksgiving and those echoes of grief that never leaves us. For to acknowledge these bittersweet times is part of what it is that makes us human. In the quiet, the stillness, the darkness, at the end and the new beginning it is good to say some prayers, to light a candle, to thank God for all his mercies (and share the trick or treat mega bucket of jelly bats, chocolate eyeballs etc.) May God bless you and keep you.

Ruddle Centre Refurbishment BRAITHWELL AND MICKLEBRING RECREATION AND LEISURE ASSOCIATION LTD (BMRLA) wins Sport England funding
BMRLA is celebrating having been awarded £28,000 from Sport England to develop and support their community facility, the Ruddle Centre at Braithwell. The grant will allow BMRLA to further develop community activities and accommodate sporting, recreational and health activities by providing sports changing room facilities and by replacing the original hall floor and boiler within the Ruddle Centre. BMRLA is a registered charity that provides a community facility for groups and individuals to access recreational, leisure and learning opportunities. It operates from The Ruddle Centre, a purpose-built community centre with playing field. It is the only multi-purpose meeting place serving the villages of Braithwell and Micklebring and surrounding areas.
The Directors of BMRLA are thrilled to have been awarded the funding: “We are delighted to have secured this investment which means we can upgrade our premises to meet the needs of our existing users and at the same time provide the opportunity for additional sporting, leisure and recreational activities. We would like to take this opportunity of thanking everyone who contributed to BMRLA’s success in achieving this funding, we are very grateful. An official ceremony for our upgraded facility will be arranged upon completion of the project.” Tickets, in advance, cost £5 which includes refreshments during and after the interval of sherry, mince pies, tea and coffee. Daisy and her buddy, Mollie, came into our care as their previous owner was moving and her partner was allergic. She has taken a while to settle in but is now gaining confidence and beginning to blossom. Daisy is by far the confident of the pair and can usually be found at the front of the pen ‘shouting’ to anyone who will listen.
Margaret Godley
Although Daisy and Mollie came from the same home, they aren’t really best buddies, Therefore, although a home together would be purrrrfect, they can be rehomed seperately should the right home come along. Daisy would be better rehomed as a single cat if not homed with Mollie.

Beautiful linenware completes the look. Our modern kitchen is well equipped for cooking, baking and party food preparation/service with a wide array of pots, pans, trays and utensils.

On Friday 27th September Tickhill Community Library held its annual McMillan Coffee Morning. This event is always well supported by the community in so many ways. The Library is always full of folk enjoying delicious home-made cakes, tea and coffee and in addition to donations, many give generously of their time, baking, washing up, serving, decorating the Library and tidying up after the event. Throughout the year the Library sells donated good quality second-hand popular fiction books. These monies together with Friday’s donations raised an amazing £705.80 for McMillan, our highest total to date.

Tickhill Town Council - November 2019 This month sees the turning on of the Christmas lights and the late-night shopping evening on Thursday 28th November 6pm. The judging of the Best Dressed Window competition will take place at this event with the announcement of the winner to be made later in the month. Tickhill Town Council would like to say a special thank you to members of our community for organising such wonderful events throughout the year. There is the Horticultural show, The Scarecrow Festival, the Scouts Gala, the endless streams of coffee mornings at the Parish Room and Methodist Church, the Friday market and Paula for this publication, plus Tickhill in Bloom which providing such wonderful floral displays throughout the year. Only a few have been mentioned, the list is endless, but thank you all for making Tickhill what it is.
Dog Fouling Information What should dog owners do? Responsible dog owners do not allow their dogs to foul public places. Ideally, dogs should be trained from an early age to ‘go at home’ in their own garden before or after a walk, rather than during. If dog fouling does occur away from home, the responsible owner will clean up after the dog. Any suitable plastic bag can be used, or special poopscoop bags can be purchased from pet shops, veterinary surgeries or stores. Dispose of faeces in a poop-scoop bin or take the bag home.
A final note on Planning: Planning application information submitted to the Council is protected by the Copyright Acts (Section 47, 1988 Act). You may only use material which is downloaded and/or printed for consultation purposes, to compare current applications with previous schemes, and to check whether developments have been completed in accordance with approved plans. Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan
T
Thank you to all those who have assisted the Town Council in filling in our recent questionnaire.
authorities without any result. Stripe Road junction is probably the least satisfactory of all in the parish and will be even more of a problem if all the proposed Harworth developments take place.
Please send in any further ideas you have to help us as we review and update the Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan at the same time as the new Doncaster Local Plan is going through the statutory processes. There were many positive remarks about the ‘friendly community’, ‘good selection of shops’, ‘clubs and societies for everyone’ and ‘attractive countryside’. Many expressed appreciation at the tidiness of the centre as a result of our litter pickers’ hard work.
Many of you expressed concern at the proposal for a supermarket at the Millstone. The Council has already objected to this, as contrary to the Neighbourhood Plan and damaging to the viability of the town centre. Having a statutory Neighbourhood Plan helps us in commenting on planning applications but we can’t always promise to get the result wanted locally as Doncaster Planning Committee takes the final decision.
However, it will not be a surprise to any readers of Tickhill Today that 80% of respondents commented adversely on something to do with traffic and highways. One person summed it up as ‘the speed, noise and volume of traffic’. Parking continues to be an issue; hopefully the recent minor changes to timing rules in our town centre will help shoppers but parking on pavements and lack of enforcement are beyond the powers of the Town Council. The Council has already made a request for restrictions in Alderson Drive outside the Cricket Club. Mini-roundabouts at road junctions have been suggested, also the need for more pedestrian crossings and traffic calming. Road maintenance is inadequate on many roads. These are matters the Council will raise with the Borough Council. That heavy goods vehicles still come through Tickhill after the opening of the far better route off the M18 along Great Yorkshire Way and A638 is a major area of concern; signage to Bawtry still takes drivers off the M18 at Hellaby. This has been pointed out already to the highway
Some of the other areas you raised will be looked at and action taken or pressure put on the relevant authorities where possible. These include the inadequacy of the doctors’ surgery, possible improvements to youth facilities and play areas, a lack of policing, preservation of open spaces and allotments and bus services to Maltby and Meadowhall. Further ideas will be welcomed as we work on the revised Neighbourhood Plan. Please leave them at Castlegate Cards or through any councillor’s letter box. If you wish to be kept up to date, leave your e mail address with the Clerk to the Council . One of the contents of the new Plan will be a list of structures/items of local historical interest not on the Listed Buildings register; suggestions for this will be welcome We would also welcome volunteers to assist us when we do our first traffic survey on Tuesday 12 November; names to any of the above and thank you.

Out and About Group T We met on Thursday the 3rd October at 10.00 am. Firstly we discussed transport arrangements for the visit to the Sheffield City Hall on the Saturday, 9th November to a Halle Orchestra Concert with music by Grieg and Sibelius. We then discussed planned
visits to the Phoenix Theatre at Bawtry week commencing 18th November [preference being Tuesday 19th] and a visit to Stainton on Friday, 22nd to listen to Thurnscoe Male Voice Choir [this being an afternoon performance]. A number of us also decided we would enjoy a visit to The Crucible, Sheffield
to see Guys and Dolls and arrangements were made to go to the matinee performance on Thursday, 9th January, 2020. Next meeting Thursday, 7th November, 10.00 am in Castle Close Community Centre.

e started back from the summer break full of enthusiasm and plenty to achieve. The majority of the group consisting of 38 youngsters and 7 leaders– Beavers, Cubs and Scouts – spent the weekend at Walesby Forest Scout Centre getting back to basics. Well, the activities were very basic but the accommodation was relatively comfortable in bunk beds in a centrally heated lodge. Most of the scouts and leaders actually camped away from the lodge so they had to “rough” it!! Rather than take advantage of the many activities provided at the camp site, the leaders decided that all the campers would cook their own lunches over an open fire (cheese toasties and toasted marshmallows) and then explore the 270 acre site using orienteering techniques, following trails and hunting for signs. In the evening the campsite laid on a camp fire at which one of our Scouts surprised us all by standing up and telling a story about bananas and bagels!! This was followed by an open air disco. Our recent Jumble Sale somehow raised over £300!! We were both surprised and amazed that we were able to raise so much from what we had on offer. This must be due to the quality of the goods donated to us for which we are very grateful and the tenacity of the sellers in obtaining the best price possible for the items on offer. Thanks once again to all those who donated jumble and those who came to sort and sell.

It saddens me to have to say that, unless we get more adult help, we will have to consider a reduction in what we can offer in Scouting in the new year. This is one step we do not want to take and will do all we can to avoid but it is becoming increasingly inevitable. If you know of anyone, or maybe yourself, who would be able to help then please contact me as detailed below. Let’s make 2020 a year of growth, not reduction of Scouting in Tickhill. It could spark a new interest for you.
