Welcome to the

October 2017 edition

Est. 1939

“Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.” Jim Rohn October again! Where do the months go? No sooner are the children back at school, then the countdown to Christmas begins! (sorry to mention Christmas). It has been a period of change in our household, firstly as we modernise our home, getting rid of the 70’s/80’s fixtures and décor and turning it slowly into a modern family home, with a lot of dust and mess along the way. Secondly, as we get used to a slightly quieter home after taking to our daughter to start at University last weekend. It is early days yet but it seems she is having a fantastic time! If like me you are planning to be organised this year and not have that busy last-minute rush then you might want to start looking through these pages and getting things booked in. Everyone from decorators through to dog groomers and from chimney sweeps through to curtain makers, get increasingly busy as the festive season gets nearer, some are already taking bookings for 2018! Whatever you want to get done before Christmas, be that lose weight, shop for gifts and supplies locally, get your accounts sorted or revamp your home or garden, or any of 1001 other things, you are sure to find someone to help you in this magazine. Don’t forget to tell people you found them here when contacting advertisers! The November issue will be delivered to you late October. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th October. Please remember that we are heading into the busy pre-Christmas season (sorry that word again!) so plan ahead and get the dates of your events and fundraisers to me in good time so I can ensure they are promoted for you. Enjoy October, and I will be back in a months’ time with your November magazine.

Best wishes,

community Community Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, The weather at the moment is driving everyone to distraction, the poor dogs don’t know if they are coming or going. One minute they are laid in the sunshine the next they are being rained on. Well at least we are all still in one piece unlike the poor people and some animals in America. If you are looking for your forever dog or cat please take a look at some of our older residents or the ones that have been with us long term. They sometimes get overlooked because they don’t show themselves in the correct light and appear stressed. Our kennel carers work with any dog that has issues until they are ready to be re-homed. It is always worth coming to the Sanctuary and discussing your requirements with our carers as they all know the dogs in their care better than anyone. You would be surprised how many people come to see us with specific requirements and take a completely different dog home. We also have some beautiful cats, some that we would prefer to be kept indoors and others depending on your location that will be happy as outdoor cats. Penny our cattery Manager will be happy to discuss the cats in her care with you. The cattery has recently received funding from The Jean Sainsbury Trust to upgrade our cattery which we are very excited about. However, until we start to upgrade we will need to match fund so that will mean more bucket collecting and fund raising. The diary is full to overflowing with fund raising efforts on the run up to Christmas so we are hoping that our public will be supportive. Now some dates for your diary. Our next fundraising day with M&S Wheatley Hall Road will be Friday 13th Oct, I hope that will be a lucky day for us. The next outside M&S will be 28th October we will have

Finding a forever home some dogs with us so come along and say hello. We will also be holding Table Top sale in the Scout Headquarters in Tickhill on the 28th October. The tables are £12 each and I believe there are a couple or so left. If you would like to book a table please call Janice 07590455340. Unfortunately, we have had to alter dates for both the above table top sale and the Race night. The race night will now be on the Sat 25th November in the Scout Head Quarters starting at 7.30 for 8pm please call for tickets 07969 203206, 07590 455340 or 01302 711330. The price will be £6 and include pie and peas. Our Ladies night that was promised for Christmas will now be in January in time for Valentine’s day 2018. Apologies for the change in dates it has been out of our control. Please come along to see us if you are looking for that forever pet, we will be happy to chat to you about your pet requirements. Our telephone number should you need us is 01302 711330 Best Wishes and will look forward to seeing you soon

My original owner asked a friend to look after me while she went on holiday. But she didn’t come back !!!! When she was eventually contacted she said that she didn’t want me anymore. That’s hard for a guy like me to take in. Unfortunately it gets worse. The existing cat in the household was aggressive to me so it was impossible for me to stay there. I found it hard to settle here at first and hid away in my basket but its not so bad now. My carers say that I’m a treasure to have around. All I want is a home and a family to call my own. Could I come home with you ?

THERE’S A BEER FOR THAT

There’s a world of beer out there In the UK a quintessentially British beer and food pairing is a steak and kidney pie and a glass of bitter. Hop across the continents and you can enjoy moules-frites with a witbier in Europe, Asahi and sushi in Asia and an American pale ale with a burger in US. Thanks to the culinary exploits of brilliant British chefs and top-notch pubs and restaurants, world cuisine can be enjoyed in our own backyard and we have the beers to match. If your Asian food of choice has some mild heat an IPA (India Pale Ale) is a good option. Look out for Lagunitas IPA and Franciscan Well’s Chieftain IPA. If you prefer the heat in Indian or Thai curry turned up, look to wheat beers such as Blue Moon or Little Valley Hebden Wheat.

There’s an abundance of tasty food inspired by cuisine from all over the world and whichever country’s cooking your favour, there’s a world beer for that. Discover more at www.beerforthat.com

In the US they take grilling seriously and even though the colder months have arrived in the UK, grilled meat is still on our menus. Look to beers with a malty backbone so the caramelized crust on grilled meat pulls out the TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Tickhill Bowling Club On behalf of the Bowling Club we would like to give a big thank you to Irene and Sue who have organised the Race Night at Tickhill Institute on Friday 29th September – just as this magazine starts to be distributed. Well done to the players, reserves and all the supporters that came to watch the Eric Warren Cup Final against Parklands, sadly we lost, but only 5 points in it, we will be back next year! We would also like to thank another one of our members Les Crownshaw who has completed a Coast to Coast run of 402 miles and has donated all his sponsorship money to the club well done Les and again a big thank you. :H KHOG RXU ȴ QDOV GD\ RQ WKH WK 6HSWHPEHU 2017. Holiday Ramblings As the temperatures drop and the nights draw in, we remembering fondly our summer holidays. Be it a beach resort on an island far away, or a poolside family all inclusive hotel in the Med? Maybe it was a Caribbean cruise or a knuckle ride adventure in Disneyland? Perhaps a caravan by the sea, or camping in the middle of nowhere. Whatever type of holiday there will be moments to remember forever. Me I couldn’t have a holiday this year, but I love walking, I don’t mean 260 miles along the Pennine Way walking, but short lead ones, for example with the Doncaster Ramblers. I also love walking independently using a guide book, or a map, compass, and the trusty waymarker posts. Ask me what I love about walking, and I could say, it’s the exercise and the air in my lungs, they say we don’t get enough of it. I could say it’s the views, those wide open vistas, babbling brooks, or forest glades that surprise me at every turn. We live in a beautiful county. I could say it a sense of achievement reaching the top of those hill, or even navigating my way back home. The feeling of well being is better than any pill. TICKHILL IN BLOOM We are holding a COFFEE MORNING on Wednesday 8th November at the Methodist Church Hall from 10:00 to 12:00. Tickets: £1 from members or on the door. If you enjoy our displays around the village please show your support and join us on the 12th. You will be made most welcome. The Tickhill in Bloom group are very pleased with this season’s displays, a product of the favourable late Spring and Summer weather - generally warm but more important (for us!) with reasonable amounts of rainfall. We hope the rest of the village and of course our visitors have shared our enjoyment. However on a somewhat more negative note although we plan for plant deterioration from weather, insect attack etc. we do not allow for the theft of plants although we do try and replace those lost. We have had over twenty plants stolen from the beds at the entrance to the village on Rotherham Road. This is not a victimless theft; all our funds come from the residents and businesses in the village. If anyone knows or sees someone taking plants from or vandalising the beds could they please let our Chairperson, Gillian Hill, know, tel. 743317. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Community Awards October 31st is the deadline to nominate a Tickhill resident (young or old) for one of the three awards presented by Tickhill Town Council each year. These awards have been running for a few years now but there are still many people in Tickhill who deserve such recognition so the council would like to hear from you! If you have nominated someone in the past who didn’t receive the award you suggested (only one in each category is given each year), please nominate them again. The three categories are: The Community Award which is given to an adult for an outstanding contribution to the community, the Young Person of the Year Award which is given to a resident aged 11 or under for personal commitment above and beyond that which is expected, and the Alison Award which is presented to a young resident of Tickhill (aged 12–25) for any form of personal achievement. You can nominate as many people as you wish in whichever category, but each nomination needs to be on a separate form. Last year nominations came in early but not so this year, so please give this serious thought and send in your nominations. Details can be obtained from the library and KSM or on the council’s website. 64 TICKHILL TODAY

Tickhill and District

Our latest publication focuses on Robert de Morton c.1339-1396, a wealthy and influential royal official who lived in Bawtry. Among his many responsibilities he collected money from John of Gaunt’s Yorkshire estates then paid for troops to defend Tickhill Castle, for example. His charitable donations supported the Hospital of St Mary Magdalene. This history profile paper is on sale at Castlegate Cards, price £1. The 19th October Meeting speaker is Sonia Preece, who works at Hardwick Hall. Sonia’s job is to train and dress the actors/actresses who wear the costumes and meet the public. Her talk entitled ‘Bess and her Household’ tells the story of how the household was run in Bess’s day. The Methodist Schoolroom doors open at 7.00pm, we begin at 7.30pm and visitors are always welcome. 66 TICKHILL TODAY

THE AUDIT FOR THE COUNCIL’S FINANCES IS NOW COMPLETE AND 2016/17 HAS BEEN FINALISED. As a legal requirement the Council must advertise the Notice of Conclusion of Audit and the External Auditor certificate and report for 2016/17: both have been displayed on the Tickhill Town Council Notice board and on the Website, alongside the financial statement from 8th August 2017 to end of August 2017. Each month the accounts for payments are prepared and distributed to all Councillors and an up to date statement of receipts and payments for the financial year to date are also submitted. Payments due that month are provided and set out against budget. The finances are monitored both monthly and quarterly. At year end the Internal Auditor scrutinises all transactions and bank information and it is then sent to Government Approved External Auditors. Despite being one of the 5% chosen councils for an extra rigorous external audit the certificate given was as follows: “On the basis of our review of the annual return, in our opinion the information in the annual return is in accordance with proper practices and no other matters have come to our attention giving cause for concern that relevant legislative and regulatory requirements have not been met” The Clerk to the Council will continue to work to office hours, as shown below, thus greatly improving her quality of work and residents are asked to only 70 TICKHILL TODAY

Meetings take place at the Pavilion Tithes Lane Tickhill DN11 9QN on the second Tuesday of each month at 10.30am and the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7.00pm. Planning applications to be discussed at each meeting are displayed on the notice board and on the website alongside planning numbers, addresses and a brief description of the proposal. RETIRED? JOIN THE DU3A

If you have retired recently, or not so recently, and you have not heard of the Doncaster U3A then read on. Doncaster University of the Third Age offers a variety of groups who meet regularly to learn and socialise. There are over 35 groups with more starting all the time. For example, there is Theatre and Discussion, Card making, French, History, Striders, Criminology and For the love of nature, to list a sample. Members bring their hobbies or pastimes to the organisation and offer to share them with others. The U3A is an educational self-help group where people develop their skills. There is no entrance exam nor is a qualification needed and none given. There is a minimum charge for Membership and for some Group meetings. These meetings are held during the day. Members can join one or more groups to try something new or revive an old hobby. There is a monthly General Meeting with a guest speaker giving you an opportunity to sit back and listen. It also allows prospective new members to attend and find out more about the DU3A.

“I heard about U3A through a friend and have loved it since.” Anne. “I like being involved with other people and I have been able to learn new things.” David. 74
