Our annual Wine Tasting will take place on October 31st. “Everyone must take time to sit and Tickets on watch the leaves turn.” sale, in store, Elizabeth Lawrence from Friday October again already, for me 2019 is flying by. No sooner have the children returned to 4th October school, then Halloween is upon us and the
2019 edition
countdown to Christmas begins!
My usual October reminder is that if you wish to be organised this Christmas then now is the time to start searching through these pages and get things booked in. Everyone gets increasingly busy as the festive season gets nearer – many are already taking bookings for 2020. Whatever you want to get done before Christmas, be that shop for supplies and gifts, revamp your home, lose weight, sort your accounts or any of 101 other things, you are sure to find someone to help you in this magazine. Just don’t forget to tell advertisers where you found them please! The November issue will be delivered to you late October, if you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th October. Remember we are heading into the busy PreChristmas season so please plan ahead and get the details of your events and fundraisers to me in good time so I can ensure they are promoted for you. Enjoy October and I will be back in a months’ time with your November magazine.
Best wishes,

A New Look for Retford Hub.
T
T
Soon, you will be able to visit us at the Hub and see our newly refitted shop. The shop will be closed for the week beginning 16 September while the work is being done. The redesign gives us more space for our 140 local artisans to display their work beautifully. In addition there are improvements in every area with better seating and more space in the café, improved lighting, better picture hanging and many other changes. Our tourist area is redesigned with a new interactive display and more local souvenirs, ideal for Christmas. Come and see what our volunteers, with help from the King & Miller, have achieved. The King and Miller, which is a Sizzler pub, is funding the refurbishment through the Sizzling Carling Community Action award. The Hub is proud of having been chosen to receive this major award. During the summer we welcomed an influx of visitors to Retford, who loved our town, remarking on the variety of shops and the welcome they received from local people. Explore Retford and you will find a town that for the most part is bucking the trend of closures that is decimating many northern towns. Visitors enjoyed the Pilgrim Museum at the Hub and we were pleased to welcome some large coach groups. If you haven’t visited yet, then you must. The exhibition by well-known artist Derrick Spence continues this month with a wonderful display of his work in the Gallery. Every Thursday. Drop In Art with Cath. 1.00pm. Saturday 5 Oct. Watercolour with Jennie. 12.30pm. Saturday 12 Oct. Parent & Child Craft. 10am- 4.00pm. Saturday 19 Oct. Linoprinting without a press with Polly Warren. 10.30am all day. Saturday 26 Oct. Wonderful news!
At the end of August we received an anonymous donation of £10,000 towards the biopsy machine. This was extremely generous and our very grateful thanks to the donor(s). Our stall at Auckley Show made £324. After an early shower thankfully the sun shone for the rest of the day. Thank you to everyone who supported us. Intake and Wheatley Pub Watch donated £700 last month. Our thanks to all involved and for their continuing support. We received £3,500 from Wheatley Golf Club and would like to thank the organisers and everyone who donated or helped in any way. Don’t forget to make a note of our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre which will be from Monday, 25th November until Friday, 20th December. We hope to be downstairs outside Boots from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. Please get in touch if you have any fundraising ideas or would like to be a volunteer.

COMMUNITY
Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir.
We are always eager to welcome new members and invite men of any age to come and join us - so do come along and enjoy the camaraderie of singing in a four part choir (Bass, Baritone & two Tenor parts). It has been proven that singing regularly
can improve one’s health and wellbeing. All prospective new members are most welcome to attend our rehearsals which are held each Monday evening in the Schoolroom to the rear of the Methodist Church, Northgate, Tickhill from 7.30 to 9.30 pm. Remember, it is not necessary to have the ability to read music or to have any previous experience. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact our secretary, Phillip Randall – telephone 01302 743468 or our chairman, Martin Lord – telephone 07588 887771 or just come along to one of our weekly rehearsals. We look forward to seeing you there!! Following on from the success of our Annual Concert at the beginning of June we had a month off from rehearsals, which resumed at the beginning of July. Despite the choir closing down for a month we have suffered a little in numbers at our rehearsals due to members taking family holidays and also with a little ill health of some members. However we continue to strive to achieve perfection (or close to it)! On Wednesday 20th August we performed for the local Alzheimer’s Society to a very appreciative audience, with ten items from our itinerary (covering a wide range of music) along with solos performed by Phillip Randall and Chris Buley - with Chris also leading an audience participation item. The choir was led by our Deputy Music Director, Allen
T
Mason and was accompanied by Janet Skinner. Unfortunately the joint concert with Doncaster Ladies Choir scheduled for Saturday 28th September at St Peter’s Church, Warmsworth (White Church) had to be postponed and will now hopefully take place early in the New Year. We have upcoming concerts as follows: Wednesday 9th October at Flower Park Care Home, Denaby Main - in remembrance of one of our former members, George Boothman. Friday 1st November at Bawtry Methodist Church commencing at 7.00 pm. Also, on Saturday 30th November we are hosting a Choral Workshop, led by Steven Roberts, from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm at the Village Hall, Wadworth, DN11 9BW with other male voice choirs invited. The event is open to anyone wishing to attend at a cost of £15.00 per person. Tea or coffee will be provided during registration from 9.30 am onwards and Lunch can be pre-ordered at an additional cost of £5.00. If this event is anywhere near as good as the previous one we hosted then it should not be missed! Anyone wishing to attend should contact our secretary, Phillip Randall – telephone 01302 743468. After the Choral Workshop we then commence our very busy Christmas programme. DO NOT MISS our Annual Christmas Concert at Tickhill Methodist Church on Saturday 14th December further details to follow. Remember Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir is available to perform concerts for any occasion – please contact Martin on 07588 887771 or Phillip on 01302 743468, all enquiries and bookings would be welcomed.

Raff is a playful man who walks lovely on the lead but may get a little excited to get out and about to begin with. He is clean in his kennel but may need more house training in a home. Raff gets super excited to see you in the mornings, so much that he gets a little drooly! He knows some basic tricks such as; ‘sit’ and ‘paw’ and will need further training to keep this up.

We meet at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick S8219AP. Coffee is served from 10am and the monthly Lecture is from 11 am to 12 noon approx.Free car parking. Tickhill Parish Room News.
It’s been a fabulous summer – more sunshine than we knew what to do with, lots more wind than we’re used to, I think there’s been more thunder and lightning this year as well. I suppose we are blaming it all on global warming or greenhouses!
If only we could stock up on the sunshine for those dull winter days. September seems like a time for new beginnings. What with new schools for some children and new teachers for most it is time for change. But now we are in October children are perhaps looking forward to Halloween and Christmas. The Parish Room has many regular classes and events coming back with new vigour. Classes and teachers have new ideas and enthusiasm for new beginnings. Yoga, Spanish, Sounds Phonics, WI, Ukulele and Francophiles all came back in September and continue now until the Christmas break. Probus meetings continue throughout the year. John Marsden will be back with his Soup Lunches – all the more welcome in the colder days (delicious home-made soup on the 11th and 25th October). Tickhill Film Society - back with a new Season (16th October being the second month’s film – get your membership paid now and enjoy a film on the third Wednesday of the month for a very reasonable £45 (Guests are more than welcome at £6 per film). We’re hoping to be installing a brand new projector in October – for a bigger, better picture. The new Season of films promises to be interesting and entertaining! As usual there will be the weekly Coffee Morning every Saturday from 10 – 12 noon. Call in to meet friends/chat/catch up on the gossip and have a delicious cafetière of coffee! On Friday 4th October we are holding another excellent Parish Room Quiz Night. Enter the Quiz and enjoy Sausage and Mash for £5, this includes free tea or coffee. This is a popular night – don’t miss out on your ticket – numbers are limited!! Bring your own if you prefer alcohol. Book your place with Lesley on 01302 744600. On the 23rd October Tickhill Flower Club will meet in the Parish Room. Visitors are always welcome. At the moment the Parish Room is still available for a Christmas Day booking. Book the venue for the day and take the strain out of your party/catering. If you need any further information on any of the above or to hire the room for your own event/celebration/party/class, ring me on 07840 419763 – I will be only too happy to help persuade you to book our fabulous medieval building immediately!! With our competitive rates, lovely hall and well equipped, modern kitchen – how can you resist?!

TICKHILL ST MARY’S
A NEW START! Year 6 came back to a new term for their final year at St Mary’s and our reception children joined us for their very first year at St Mary’s. What could be better than to join the two together. So year 6 have joined forces with their buddies in reception. The children in reception just love having an older buddy to show them the ropes and to model behaviour and learning attitudes. There was a lot of cutting and sticking making Mr Potato heads, some buddies spent ages playing in the sand and water outside together whilst others read books, some preferred writing on the IWB and some enjoyed counting together – we wonder who actually had the most fun! Lucky, our school dog, is also enjoying the return to school with a walk to watch the ducks.

KEEPING FIT IS GOOD FOR YOUR MIND AS WELL AS YOUR BODY! There is plenty of information around at the moment about mental health and how it is good to talk. Here at Blizard Physiotherapy we also really believe that keeping fit is vitally important for your general mental well-being. Daily physical activity helps us to feel good about ourselves and gives us a sense of achievement even if it is only a brisk ten-minute daily walk. Participation in regular physical activity can increase our self-esteem and can reduce stress and anxiety. The main things to consider when choosing a form of physical activity is making time daily for exercise, is it the right type of fun activity that is going to be manageable moving forward and is it the right type of exercise for you? Our best advice is choosing something you like doing, start slowly and make it part of your daily lifestyle and consider making some shortterm goals that you can try to work towards. Break it into three sections of exercise you can do at home, at work and when out and about and you will soon start working on a program!
Good luck!

Arts Review & what’s going on - OCTOBER 2019 •
There have been some shows worth beating a path to this summer. At the YSP, which is always worth the trip even just for a good walk there is a wonderful show by the American sculptor David Smith. The Park has imported work, some of which I was not at all familiar with, which is lyrical and of the landscape. Smith was known for his hard edge and challenging steel and stainlesssteel sculpture, he moved Sculpture into abstraction and was very much working alongside the post-WW2 Abstract Expressionist movement in the USA. The curators have brought together work which fits with the Yorkshire landscape and is a complete knock-out. I can’t recommend it enough. You don’t have to be too canny to avoid the dreadful Hirst’s which abound on the north east lakeside. The catalogue describes them as a ‘powerful presence’, all they have going for their vast brightly painted scale is the Hirst shouting loudly ‘I can afford the foundry fees!’ Yorkshire Sculpture Park Until 5 Jan 2020 DAVID SMITH will be found in the Underground Gallery and surrounding area. David Smith (1906-65) see above. Until 3 November in the Longside Gallery is an exhibition about art and child development. It would be nice if the education tinkerers would take note. www. ysp.co.uk Scrooby Community Cinema: October 20th Doors 7:30 Start 8:00 Double Bill - THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE and THE ROSE with food served between and licensed bar. film: £4 on the door in Scrooby Village Hall further information email: film@scrooby.net National Trust, Hardwick Hall Wednesday – Sunday, 11am-5pm until 3 November. After receiving high levels of interest and popularity, ‘WE ARE BESS’ photographic exhibition has been extended. The exhibition features 20 modern women, from household names to the local community, including Sue Perkins and The Right Reverend Libby Lane. These women responded to the retold story of Bess of Hardwick, the woman who built Hardwick Hall, and reflect on the similarities

Dear Friends.
T
This year particularly, I have become more aware of the gift of the seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. I think it may have started with the beautiful early spring which followed a very mild winter. Cast your minds back to the blossom which seemed impossibly to better the blossom of Spring 2018 (the like of which I had never seen before.) I remember driving through our village where the cherry blossom lay so thickly on the ground that the tarmac was transformed into a pink petal carpet, patch after patch, as I drove past dozens of trees in a floral ‘snow storm.’ The gardens of Japan could not have matched our fragrant display. Then, of course, we experienced the early summer heatwave which was so lovely to start with but soon became something else entirely when it became too hot to travel, work and sleep comfortably and when the health of the elderly, young children and animals was threatened by the relentlessly mounting temperatures. It helped to bear the extreme heat knowing that it would end eventually with the onset of crisp mornings, cool nights and refreshing rain to refill reservoirs and water butts. It will not surprise you to know that I believe that the order and variety and refreshment of each season is a gift from God. You probably know the bible story of Noah and his Ark and the animals ‘that went in two by two?’ But perhaps you are not as aware of the ending of the story. God promises that ‘while earth remains there will always be a time for planting and a time for harvest. There will always be cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night.’ (Genesis Chapter 8, verse 22) As our warm summer days change slowly and seamlessly into the colourful beauty of Autumn which will in turn give way to frosty mornings and the promise of snow. Let us thank God for the gift of our seasons which make our lives more varied and richer.

I offer you a blessing written by my friend Ruth Burgess of the Iona Community:
Many thanks for your support, it is much appreciated.
Walk with us God, through sharp frosty days and bright crunchy leaves into winter. Rest with us by warm firesides and tell us stories into the night. Take us outside and show us the stars and fill us with wonder. Bless us and our families, our friends and our neighbours with love and with courage. And never let us forget the stranger who needs to share our wealth, our shelter and our hope. AMEN

Tickhill Estfeld School Horticultural Show Success
Well done to all of our pupils who entered this year’s Tickhill Horticultural Show. It is a great community event and it is exciting to enter a piece into the show and await the outcome. Well done to all who entered and congratulations to those pictured who won a 1st, 2nd or 3rd prize rosette. Our pupils entered many categories in the Children’s Section and can be seen here proudly displaying some of their handiwork and rosettes at our Monday morning assembly. Also pictured is one of our Y1 pupils who bravely ran 2km in his first race, raising funds for the British Heart Foundation. I am sure that many will have seen him out training in the run up to the race with his dad – very well done indeed!

Happy Birthday Mrs Davies
Monday 9th September was a very special day in school for us all, as we helped our cook Mrs Davies to celebrate her 70th birthday. We surprised her with a bouquet which we presented in assembly that day. Even though it was her birthday Mrs Davies was at work as usual, cooking a delicious meal for us. She has been at Estfeld since 1982 and we are extremely fortunate to still have her. Thank you to those parents and pupils who sent kind messages to Mrs Davies on her big birthday.

Road with no Name! We have a road in Tickhill which has no name, no road sign and no name on the map. It is situated between Dadsley Road and Wilsic Road and runs for about 150 yards from opposite 50 Dadsley Road.
Christmas Trees in Tickhill If any resident of Tickhill would like to join in with the array of Christmas trees that the shops and businesses of Tickhill will once again be displaying, please contact Paul Foster on 07500 926601 before the end of October. Trees cost £15 and if you would the tree putting up for you and then removing there is a further charge of £15. Thank you very much, Tickhill Together
I recall being told by a local resident, many years ago that some people knew it as Barber Lane. Does anyone have any information about whether this is true? A request has been sent to DMBC to consider this and whether a name and road sign could be allocated. It would aid navigation for strangers. If anyone has any information please pass it on via paula@todaypublications.co.uk Thank you

We are delighted that the Community Defibrillator has been placed at the Pavilion in Tithes Lane. T
We would like to thank everyone involved in making this possible and contributing to a valuable piece of equipment for the Tickhill community. Representatives gathered for the photo namely, Christopher Taylor (Making a Difference Locally), Barry Elderkin, Yvonne Huntridge of Tickhill Tennis Club, Lynn Findlay and members of Tickhill Running & Athletics Club, Lynda & Tony Bradbury and members of Tickhill Bowling Club. These businesses and groups made substantial contributions along with Spar (Blakemore Foundation), Tickhill Town Council as well as individuals from the Tickhill Community. It is mine and Sue’s intention to start to raise further funds for another Defibrillator to be located in the main shopping area in the village. If anyone would like to help with this project please feel free to contact us. Many thanks

Tickhill Volunteer Litter Picker feeling a little deflated. T
Comments coming back through Neighbourhood Plan leaflet in Tickhill Today September 2019 reference some areas are not being cleared of litter and rubbish. It must be remembered that Tickhill Council now employ a Lengthsman who works 10 hrs a week alongside my volunteering work that I have done for 6 years. It is not possible to cover every bit of Tickhill, so resources concentrate on the Town Centre to keep this looking at its best for residents and visitors to enjoy. Any problem areas should be reported to Doncaster Council on (01302) 736000, via the MyDoncaster App or online through Doncaster Council website report it. 2 years ago, I was successful in a bid through Tesco Bags of Help and was able to purchase community litter picking equipment i.e. Bag hoops, Litter Pickers, Gloves & Bags. This equipment is available on loan to any resident or if you and a few local residents would like to tackle a problem area please contact me on 07933 158629 or email nigel_cannings@hotmail.com then we can all work together to clear an area to our satisfaction and I will also arrange collection of rubbish by Doncaster Council.

LI O NS in Tickhill & Wadworth Gattison House trip to Cleethorpes On Friday 16 th August TIckhill and DIstrict LIons Club took residents and carers from Gattison House, Rossington to Cleethorpes. The weather forecast was grim but nothing could dampen the spirit of the party as we set off. Luckily the rain held off and allowed everyone to walk up and down the promenade taking in the sea air. The highlight of the day was our lunch, fish and chips on the Pier, wonderful! At 3 o,clock we returned to our coach ready for our journey home. The rain which had kindly avoided us now attacked the coach relentlessly. Somewhere near sunny Scunthorpe one of our windscreen wipers surrendered to the rain. We had to park up and await a replacement wiper blade. Lesser mortals would have been despondent at this point, but not us! An impromptu singalong ensued with old favourites like Pack Up Your Troubles and We’ll Meet Again being sung with gusto. We are not expecting a recording contract for our efforts but it certainly passed the time. We arrived home an hour late but everyone agreed that a great time had been had by all.

Horticultural Society
The day dawned with the sun in the sky on September 7th, when the 32nd Tickhill Horticultural Show was held at the Methodist Church and Schoolroom, and the people of Tickhill turned out in superb numbers for what proved to be a very enjoyable day for all concerned. There are many people who need our thanks, from all on the committee who worked so hard all day – not to mention that we spent several hours the previous day setting everything up. Thanks also to the volunteers who were very busy in the kitchen serving a great range of refreshments, as well as those kind enough to bake cakes for the event. The support of several sponsors also helps us to stage the event – a list of those who we are deeply grateful for appears with the list of trophy winners. The show was opened by the Rev. Ali Earl, the vicar at St Mary’s, who was accompanied by Andy, and Ali was also on hand at 4 o’clock to present the prizes to those listed below. We thank Ali and Andy for giving up their valuable time, and we hope that they both enjoyed their day. We must also thank the many people who took the time and trouble to enter the various categories in the
Show. The display throughout the hall and chapel shows what talent and ability we have in Tickhill, and we hope that it inspires others to enter the Show next year! There were certainly the most entries we have had in several categories for many years, and we sincerely thank everyone for that. We had in the region of 250 people attending the Show, a huge increase from last year, no doubt enticed out by the warm, sunny afternoon. We thank the villagers for continuing to support our event, and it continues to be an important part of our community. Along with the trophies listed, all the children who won a nomination in their categories were given a rosette each – the pleasure on the children’s faces as they picked up their rosettes (and sweets!) made it even more worthwhile for us! So thanks to everyone involved, whether behind the scenes, taking part or visiting to see the exhibits
and enjoy the refreshments. We hope to see you all again next year – mark the first Saturday in September in your diaries! Back on to Horticultural Society matters, there has been high interest in our pre-Christmas trip to Harewood House on Sunday 24th November. If you have not put your name down already, please let us know as soon as possible to avoid potential disappointment. The September meeting had a change of speaker, as Liz Webster was unable to attend, with Wack’s Wicked Plants to speak about “carnivorous plants”. The penultimate meeting for this year of the Society is on 31st October, when Don Witton from Harthill makes a return visit, and this time will be presenting “A calendar of colour”. As always, visitors and new members are always welcome. Meetings start at 7.15pm and end at about 9 o’clock.

Our Season of Bowling has now sadly come to the end, at the time of writing we do not know how the leagues have finished, some may go up into a higher division and sadly some may go down a division. We will just have to wait until all the games are completed. We had a good day of Bowling for our internal competitions and the weather was cool but fine, just a sharp shower but the Bowling had finished. It was an excellent day for our Jim Stoddart who celebrated his 90th Birthday in July, and winning the Men’s doubles with partner D Higgins just proves bowling keeps you young, congratulations Jim from all at T.B.C. on reaching your 90th and winning the men’s doubles with Dave.

After the long summer break the Club returned, raring to go, and ready for more training and more galas to attend. First up was the Sherwood Colliery Robin Hood meet held at Ponds Forge, to which we sent 21 swimmers, some of whom swam for the first time in a licensed gala. Together, they swam in 69 races and achieved a 67% personal best rate, which is a good achievement post-summer-break. Two of our swimmers were awarded medals (well done to Harry King and Aimee Aly-Weston), and one more of our swimmers achieved a County Qualifying Time (well done to Max Fisher). Over the coming months we have more galas to attend in the bid to improve our times and to obtain those County Qualifying Times before the end of the year. Each year we appoint a Club captain and we are pleased to announce the Club Captain for this year is Abigail Foster, ably supported by Vice Captains Liam Willis, Holly Foster and Katie Wells. Thanks go to retirees Tyler Gibson who continues to support the Club and to Dominic Gillow who is now part of our coaching team. The Club also recently supported the fundraising activities and Open Day held at Bircotes Leisure Centre raising money for Weston Park charity (photograph shows Head Coach Ericka Willis and Chairperson Mieke Foster). And finally, we were delighted to receive our SwimMark accreditation. SwimMark is SwimEngland’s recognised kite-mark for the development of effective, ethical and sustainable Clubs. This involves a lot of hard work, especially for a small Club and is a great achievement... yet again. Many thanks to everyone on the Committee who worked so hard to deliver this. Even though we are a small Club, we are continually making progress.... we gain results at every gala we attend, be that PBs or County Times, but more importantly in developing confidence, satisfaction and enjoyment of our swimmers. There are many smiling faces, and we try our utmost to uphold our motto: Swim, Enjoy, Achieve. If you would like to visit our Club, please email the Club Secretary for more information and to arrange a trial, on bircotesswimclub@gmail.com

Tickhill and District The October 17th meeting will feature David Bell, THE PLAGUE DOCTOR, and the story of Eyam, Derbyshire, and how they cut themselves off from the world to prevent the plague affecting large local areas such as Sheffield. Villagers were persuaded not to leave the village or permit anyone to enter, and some lost both their spouse and all their children over a three-year period. However, this talk is not all doom and gloom, as David demonstrates some of the beliefs and cures which were around at that time. These appear very comical to our modern eyes. Did you know a frog or the back end of a pigeon, laid on the patient’s pustules would cure the plague? year and we have reached the reign of Edward III and the French and Scottish wars (no, it’s not about Brexit). Our Lecturer, Lloyd Powell is well known to members of the History Society, and the talks are accompanied by a great deal of laughter, which might explain why we have only got as far as Edward III! We currently have two vacant places, if anyone requires further details please contact me on 01302 752429. As usual we are in the Methodist Schoolroom, talks begin at 7.30pm and visitors (£3) are always welcome.

Summer Activities 2019 Review Tickhill Town Council would like to thank all those involved this year with the Summer Activities. It is generally agreed that these were a great success and special thanks to Doncaster Sheffield Airport for their £500 grant, Blakemore Foundation (Spar) for their contribution of £50 in value of food each week which gave each child the chance to eat a substantial late lunch and our thanks also to Expect Youth for putting in place the necessary training and background checks and for putting us in contact with Activefusion who supplied the sports leaders who entertained the children outdoors. It is a wish of Tickhill Town Council to take these activities forward into next year, but it cannot be achieved without forming a “group” of volunteers. If anyone is prepared to commit to just one or more sessions, Tuesday and Thursday afternoon for the duration of the summer holiday will you please make contact with Tickhill Town Council by using the e mail for the clerk clerk@ tickhilltowncouncil.co.uk or Margaret Cannings-Clough tickhillcouncil@gmail.com
56
and if you do not have use of a computer then telephone Margaret on 07591 175630 who will help you through the process. All volunteers will need to be D.B.S. checked and there is an opportunity to partake in First Aid and Food Hygiene courses all of which is free of charge. I am sure all of you agree that we must invest in the children’s future and where best to start
than with access to outdoor sport and activities whilst not at school in the holidays.
Volunteers’ support is essential if this important Community project is to move forward or even take place in 2020 and the coming years.

FINANCE The Audit for the Council’s Finances is now complete and 2018/19 has been finalised. As a legal requirement the Council must advertise the Notice of Conclusion of Audit and the External Auditor certificate and report for 2018/19: both have been displayed on the Tickhill Town Council Notice board and on the Website. Each month the accounts for payments are prepared and distributed to all Councillors for review and an up to date statement of receipts and payments for the financial year to date are also submitted. Payments due that month are provided and set out against budget. The finances are monitored both monthly and quarterly. At year end the Internal Auditor scrutinises all transactions and bank information and it is then sent to Government Approved External Auditors.
TICKHILL AWARDS Several years ago, the Town Council introduced a series of awards to recognise achievements by individuals in the community. These awards are made usually early December/January, as yet the date has not been agreed. Nominations close on 31st October 2019 allowing the Independent Panel time to assess all nominations. There is the Young Person of the Year Award for children up to the age of 11years The Alison Award for 11-25year olds for achievement The Community Award for those over 25 years of age. Last year the awards were presented

by our local member of parliament; Caroline Flint. It is hoped we can emulate that same experience in 2019. Nomination forms are available from Castlegate Cards and the library. If you would like to nominate a past recipient, then please do so.
PLANNING Tickhill Town Council asks that all
residents who send objections to/ comments on planning applications to D.M.B.C. copy them to the Tickhill Town Council, where they can be considered as part of their response. Meetings take place at the Pavilion Tithes Lane Tickhill DN11 9QN on the second Tuesday of each month at 10.30am and the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7.00pm. Planning applications to be discussed at each meeting are displayed on the notice board and on the website alongside planning numbers, addresses and a brief description of the proposal. t’s time to clear out your cupboards, drawers etc in readiness for Winter. Our Autumn Jumble Sale will be held on October 12th in the Scout and Guide HQ from 12:00. Anyone who has anything they would like to donate please bring it down to the building in St Mary’s Rd from 10:00. If you need it to be collected, then contact me below to arrange it. Please note, we cannot accept furniture or part used cans of paint and oddments of carpet/flooring. It does not sell and we have to dispose of it. All good things come to an end, but must they? Today, we have over 70 youngsters wanting to do Scouting in Tickhill. We have the youngsters, we have the premises, we have the kit – what we don’t have is YOU! You don’t need to be Bear Grylls to join us. You don’t need to have been a Scout when you were younger. You don’t even need to know how to put up a tent or tie a knot. Everyone is welcome to come along and help out. We will show you how. You might be surprised at just what you can do!! We need people to help out – making drinks, supervising crafts, playing games or just being there to support our leaders. We cannot run meetings on our own – we always need at least one other adult to be there. Volunteer today and help us prepare more young people with skills for life. Get in touch for more information.

COMMUNITY Between 1996 and 2003 a new marina was built at Shireoaks and the restoration of 6 miles of canal, several bridges and 31 locks extended the head of navigation from Worksop to the Norwood Tunnel.
The Chesterfield Canal Trust has launched a new appeal for funds to finish the restoration of the canal. Its last two appeals raised a combined total of over £100,000. The Chesterfield Canal was completed in 1777. The Trust is aiming to complete the last nine miles of restoration by 2027 which is the 250th Anniversary of that great event. All the money donated will go directly towards to costs of restoring the canal.
At the isolated western end, five miles and five locks from Chesterfield to Mill Green were made navigable between 1990 and 2002. Staveley Town Basin was opened in 2012, the new Staveley Town Lock was opened in 2016 and Hartington Harbour was first put into water in 2018. Much of this work was done by volunteers. A new terminal basin is the centrepiece of the £350 million Chesterfield Waterside complex currently under construction. The Trust’s Restoration Committee Chair, Mark Potter, said: “These are very exciting times for the Chesterfield Canal. We hope that the public will respond generously to our new appeal, as they have in the past, so that we can realise our dream of the canal being fully restored by its 250th Anniversary in 2027.”
There are six ways to contribute: • One-off Donation, which can be done by cash, cheque or online. • Monthly payment, which can be done by Standing Order. • Certificated Donation, which is for larger donations, which will be acknowledged by a formal certificate. There are four levels – Silver (£100), Gold (£500), Platinum (£1,000) and Diamond (£5,000). • Legacy - increasing numbers of supporters are leaving legacies in their wills. • Major item sponsorship – this could be major pieces of infrastructure such as lock gates, footbridges or lengths of towpath. • Corporate Social Responsibility – the Trust is very happy to discuss opportunities with both public and private sector organisations. Full details are available on the Trust’s website - search for Chesterfield Canal Trust. In 1989, the twenty miles of canal from Worksop to Chesterfield were derelict. Since then, 12 miles have been restored along with 37 locks, 11 major road bridges and 2 marinas. The Trust is finalising plans for the restoration of the remaining section between Staveley and Kiveton Park.

She was in my07940 class at712075 primary school when Miss Brewster was our teacher. Gosh! she was a bit of a tyrant was Gertrude Brewster. I had the cane from her more than once. Not as often as Neville Williams though, he was always in trouble. I used to work with Neville on the railway and he was a lovely chap. Would do anything for anybody. Didn’t he marry that Sarah girl? Yes, she was his first wife. Her mother were a Bullock. Lived somewhere near the Spital. She died tragically in ’47 and it was several years before he married again. That was Hannah Cartright who came from Loversall and worked part time at the garage. Came to work on that old bike in all weathers. It would be the Dysons at the garage in those days. Remember that old car they ran as a taxi? Kept breaking down even though run by motor mechanics. Young Ron Dyson was a bit of a tearaway and ended up joining the army. Grandma Dyson was nice. Didn’t she help with cleaning the church? Yes, there was a team of ladies I remember, because my Aunty Maud was one of them. They were bossed about by one of the church wardens. That would be Billy Havers who had his finger in everything. Lived up Lindrick somewhere and kept lots of cats. He married that Molly Spencer who lived in Church Lane.
