Welcome to

the SEPTEMBER 2014 edition

“A late summer garden has a tranquillity found no other time of the year.” - William Longgood

It seems that my decision to mention our multifamily Youth Hostel trip last month tempted fate! I said I had my fingers crossed for sunshine, however unfortunately, it rained for much of Saturday and although the sun came out for a lovely stroll around Castleton in the afternoon this was followed by thunder and lightening – which started 10minutes into our visit to the open air swimming pool in Hathersage and led to our early evacuation! We still had a fantastic time, and beautiful weather on the Sunday led us all up Mam Tor with amazing views across the Peak District. Sunshine wasn’t in short supply when I took my daughters out to Lanzarote a few days later, for a sneaky extra holiday that we managed to squeeze in this year, a great time was had by all! By the time you read this I will have also have been on our main family holiday – more about that next month, I am not planning on tempting fate again! The October issues will be delivered to you late September. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th September. Enjoy September and I will be back in a months’ time with your October magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

LARGER PREMISES More choice… Bigger value… Same great service… Shabby chic may be all the rage in home interiors, but when it comes to carpets, no one likes the threadbare look. If you spend your time wishing you had something plusher to sink your toes into, now is the time to freshen up your floors with a visit to Distinctive Flooring & Blinds. With 30 years’ experience in the industry, owner Andy Summers is well placed to impart his expert advice. He is passionate about providing great products and a friendly service to all his customers.

Once you’ve chosen your new floor covering the team are more than happy to move furniture or uplift old flooring. Nothing is too much hassle. In recent years, the business branched out and added quality, made-to-measure blinds to its portfolio. The move to bigger premises has allowed them to expand their range, which includes stylish, contemporary and traditional blinds to suit any interior. Verticals, wooden slatted, roller, and roman blinds are available and, with carpets, floor coverings and blinds all under one roof, you can guarantee a perfect colour match for your home. Call or drop into the showroom today to see for yourself the fantastic range and service Distinctive Flooring & Blinds can offer.

The family-run business moved from previous premises in Warmsworth to its current location in Balby in June. The new shop is five times larger, which allows Andy to offer a greater range of quality products. The shop, on Springwell Lane, was previously Connoisseurs Carpets. They offer a free estimating and planning service with noobligation quotes. “I am a firm believer in being honest with people and would never sell someone flooring that wouldn’t work for them – it needs to be fit for purpose,” said Andy. “This is shown in the fact that seven out of ten of our customers are repeats or recommendations.” “We are very competitively priced and can cater for everyone. No matter what your budget, you will find something to suit at Distinctive” The fantastic range of flooring covers all price points and Distinctive stocks well-known brands such as Brintons, Ulster, Axminster and Kingsmead at a fair price. A large selection of high-quality and value-for money hardwood flooring, laminate and vinyl also lines the showroom walls, so you’ll be spoilt for choice. If you are unable to visit the showroom – take advantage of Distinctive’s free ‘shop at home’ service. Andy will come to your home armed with a huge variety of samples so you can match them to your décor. There’s no safer way to ensure you find the perfect choice of floor covering and, with his expert advice readily available in the comfort of your own home, you’ll be sure to make the right decision. 4

St Mary’s School On Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd July, Years 5 and 6 performed ‘Pirates of the Curry Bean’, a musical play by Craig Hawes. Year 6 had the main parts as it was their last production but everyone was involved. The children all worked very hard to learn their lines. “In the play, the pirates are supposed to be fierce, scary and stinky but they are more like scared cry babies” – Helen Woodhouse “On the first night of the play I was scared because I had to introduce and close the play. I was Deadeye, the narrator.” - Oliver Samuel “My character’s name was Scuttle. I was a sailor who at the beginning of the play was looking for a job with my friend, Slack. We were press ganged into the crew of The Crunchy Frog. I was one of those characters who liked a joke. I was lazy and a bit simple! I was more relaxed on the second night” – Lloyd Hill “My thoughts and feelings about the play were very mixed. At first I was a bit nervous but when I had learnt my lines I was really confident about performing. I got lots of compliments about my acting” – Lucy Pashley

On Friday 4th July, Tickhill St Mary’s were successful in winning the Golden Boot in a Football tournament held at Hill Top School, Edlington. We played six other schools, winning five games and drawing one. All the team played really well and their sportsmanship was excellent. Thanks to STWCC for organising the tournament. 12

Estfeld School–

A Bumper Harvest at Estfeld At Estfeld we have a thriving Gardening Club that meets at lunchtimes throughout the year. For the last two years we have been developing the garden and it is really at its best at the moment. The crops are grown in our raised beds and poly tunnel. This year we will be harvesting onions, beetroot, lettuce, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, pumpkins and peppers. We also have an apple and pear tree which are looking promising too. We are also hoping to use the garden in an enterprising way – you will start to see our Estfeld produce for sale in the weekly market in the Methodist Church on Fridays – please pop along and support us. We will use any money raised to support the Gardening Club. The pupils are always eager to get involved and their hard work this year have already been rewarded with a bumper harvest of onions. The pupils turned their hands to plaiting them into strings and had a lot of fun trying to get it right – it was a tricky business. Thank you to all of our pupils and especially Mrs Karen Booker and two volunteers, Mr and Mrs Whitaker for their support – we couldn’t do it without you.

Velo Race Banner The pupils in Tickhill Estfeld this year have been inspired by the Tour de France. Many of them were fortunate enough to view the tour as it passed through Yorkshire and had souvenirs from the passing caravan to show in school the next day. In school we held a special assembly prior to the tour and in class the pupils designed some artwork depicting what they felt was important about cycling. Pictured below is a banner produced using a selection of pupils’ work, which will be replicated by Tickhill Velo Club and displayed during the YESSS Tickhill Velo Grand prix on 24th August 2014. This is a super event for the village and all at school, especially the pupils, are pleased to be able to support it. They will be looking out for their banner in the village on the day as they are very proud of it.

What is Pilates? Many people have heard of the term Pilates as a form of exercise but are really unsure what it is all about, so here’s the low down. Pilates is a unique method of exercise designed to improve strength and flexibility, using a mind body conditioning exercise program that targets the deep postural muscles of the abdomen and spine to improve overall central core stability and posture. The movements are flowing and controlled with emphasis on training core stability and balancing muscle systems, using mind and body control; these are brought together to achieve these aims through the following 8 sound principles: - concentration, centering, breathing, isolation, routine, precision, control and flowing movement. Pilates suits all ages and fitness levels and is particularly beneficially for those with back pain, poor postures, neurological conditions, mental health conditions, sports injuries, arthritis, stress related illness and before and after pregnancy. The medical world is now realising the benefits of the Pilates method for the prevention and rehabilitation of back injuries. In order to prevent a recurrence of back pain, it is essential to retrain the deep abdominal and spinal muscles. Whilst Pilates is very effective for most people, it is important that you have an individual assessment prior to starting a class to ensure that you learn the underlying principles fundamental to achieving success from Pilates and so that the classes can incorporate your individual needs.

The concert was named “Together in Song” as it was equally shared with the Doncaster Ladies Choir. It was a particular busy evening for Gywneth Platts, who is Musical Director for both choirs. The feedback from the audience was very positive, and they particularly liked the varied choice of music from both choirs throughout the evening. Thank you A big thank you to all those who came to the aid of my husband, Derek, on Tuesday July 22, when he toppled off his mobility scooter outside the gates of Tickhill Bowling Club. Derek moved to Tickhill upon retirement, served for a long time as a Cub leader here and still enjoys a game of bowls. 100th Birthday Celebrated in Style The students at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College are renowned for their "Tea Parties" and held an extra special celebration on Tuesday 15th July, in honour of the 100th birthday of Edith Mayor of Edlington Don Astbury and Edith Cragg Cragg, who is a regular at the Tea Parties. The 100th anniversary of the commencement of the First World War provided the theme. In the finest tradition of tea party events the red carpet was rolled out to put on a very special event for Edith, who was picked up from home by school "Bobby" PC Janine Kelly. She was escorted to school in a Police Car with sirens sounding, to be greeted by members of Edlington Town Council and the Mayor of Edlington, local Councillor’s, Head Teacher Mary McCorry and students from the College Council. The Town Crier then announced the special arrival to over 100 tea party members and the whole school community of approximately 1200 students and staff. The Tea Party featured displays put on by the Edlington Hilltop Centre's Local History Group, who had researched the life and times of Edlington residents during World War One. There was also a display by the Conisbrough and Denaby Re-Enactment Society who wore military uniform typical of the period. The Party was given a special presentation by student Joe George, charting Edith's life throughout the last 100 years, along with pictures of Edlington from all across the century showing how things have changed and grown during her remarkable life. Dinner was served by students, using traditional ingredients from the turn of the 20th Century, with mutton hotpot, vegetables and homemade bread on the themed menu. Edith was also given a special performance by members of STW’s award winning Community Choir, of songs from the 20th Century including solo’s, duets and performances on the keyboard and piano. A great time was had by all! TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278 | www.facebook.com/todaymags

An appreciation My brothers and I would like to thank all the very many people who sent messages of condolence following the death in July of our mother, Marjorie Shotton. Mum was a familiar figure in Tickhill keeping active right up until her last few weeks. She loved this town and, although born a Lancastrian, took to Yorkshire life with great zest when she moved here 26 years ago. Particular thanks must go to her many friends and neighbours who got used to her whizzing by; to the local shops and businesses, especially The Strand and Juicy Fruits who offered kindness as well as service; to the members of the WI for their companionship and to Brenda Miller who helped keep her mind active with the weekly whist sessions.

Buttercross Needleworkers The first meeting of the Buttercross Needleworkers in September is on Wednesday 3rd and there will be a demonstration showing how to make a clamshell box. Then on the 17th, the members of the Group will be considering how to respond to the President’s challenge. This is an annual event which lets everyone get creative – and inspires us with new ideas. Visitors are welcome at meetings which begin at 7:30 at the Scout Headquarters in St Mary’s Road. You don’t need to be an expert at needlework to join us, just interested in learning how textiles and needlework can be used to add colour and texture to our environment. T

A very special thanks must also go to the doctors, practice nurses and administrative staff at the Tickhill and Colliery Medical Practice and to the team of District Nurses who gave support in her last few months. The care and attention of all these people have been beyond expectation.

Does local government exist?

Shall we try for a Yearbook?

I recently heard the leaders of two prominent local authorities speak of 'the death of local government'. England is the most centralised country in western Europe, with all the purse strings controlled from Whitehall. Our public libraries, one of the glories of our culture, are now reliant on volunteers to survive, old peoples' homes are closing, maintenance of parks, paths and the like is diminishing, in fact all around our public services are subject to constant cuts imposed by the government of the day, when this is still one of the wealthiest countries in the world. A recent report pointed out that the problem is that local government here raises only 17% of what it spends, whereas the equivalent figure across the Channel averages 55%. We all know that he who pays the piper calls the tune! It wasn't always like that! The Tickhill Local History Society will shortly be publishing a splendid and comprehensive new history of the town. Read it and you will discover just how much was done for the town by its own local administration until its last manifestation, Tickhill Urban District Council, was abolished in 1974. Houses were built, public health promoted, local roads kept in good order, drains kept clear, nuisances tackled, refuse removed, allotments provided, in fact just about every service one wants locally was performed efficiently and economically. Sadly, successive British Governments seem to think that biggest is best and cheapest, when the facts demonstrate that this is not the case. Even the far-flung borough of Doncaster isn't big enough for Whitehall as local authorities are forced to combine for various purposes. Happily, we have a Town Council here in Tickhill. Even though its powers and, more significantly, its finances are limited, at least it gives us a democratic voice and does its best to stand up for the town and keep Tickhill a place to be proud of. The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery Good news! Having passed on your comments and questions to the Practice Manager we are assured that we will get responses and they have been working very hard at finding new ways of meeting the needs of all patients. We will update you as things change or are in place but here are two things which are intended to help.

Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) This is an extension of the service already offered by some pharmacies and is an NHS Funded Service whereby instead of having to collect your repeat prescription it is sent electronically to the chemist of your choice. This can be a pharmacy near where you live, a pharmacy that delivers to your home or one near your place of work.

Please note:Patients will still have to order repeat prescription items. Patients have to complete a form to sign up for this service. Explanatory leaflets/forms are available in both surgeries.

Lastly we give notice that the Annual AGM will be held on Wednesday October 15th 2014 at 6.15 in Tickhill. The location will be on the website and in the waiting areas All patients are entitled and invited to attend. Three seats on the Committee will be up for election. Any patient can nominate themselves for election and forms will be available at both surgeries from reception. These should be returned to The PPG Secretary or returned to reception at either surgery. . T

community In July The Yorkshire Sculpture Park won the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2014. The prize was presented at the National Gallery by Oscar-winning film and theatre director, Sam Mendes. The judges were incredibly impressed by YSP, and found it to be truly outstanding, with a bold artistic vision, consistently delivered at the highest level. “A perfect fusion of art and landscape, Yorkshire Sculpture Park has gone from modest beginnings to one of the finest outdoor museums one might ever imagine” said Stephen Deuchar, Chair of the Judges. And well deserved, this wonderful place has been a presence just off the M1 at West Bretton for 30 years, maybe more and has become the sort of place where the car park is packed! Who would think it? A Sculpture Park! And stuffed as the car park maybe, the park is so huge that it absorbs all the visitors and spreads them out throughout the grounds, the galleries, the shops and cafes. The main exhibition this summer is truly astonishing. I had not heard of Ursula Von Rydingsvard. She is a New York artist. Almost all her work is made in Cedar, and some of it is huge, all of it is visually strong work, some pieces evocative of landscape and rocky shoreline. I was truly astonished by the galleries and highly recommend this show. If you have time, energy and flat shoes make the short walk to the chapel and find the 6m high cast iron tree by the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. Free entry, but you pay for car parking www.ysp.co.uk English Heritage Brodsworth Hall held a host of events over the summer. Introducing Central Doncaster’s new Poppy People

Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child Just a little reminder the time is getting near when we will be thinking about collecting shoe boxes to fill with toys, books and pens to send to children who have nothing. The older children cannot go to school in many countries unless they can provide their own paper and pens. Many thanks to the people of Tickhill, Harworth, Bawtry and Wadworth for the contributions they have made to our total over the years - last year we sent 232 boxes; 6,009 boxes went from the Doncaster area to Belarus. There will be a poster and leaflets about S.P.O.C.C. in Tickhill library from the middle of September. Please take one and if you haven’t filled a shoe box before why not give it a go. A donation of £3 per shoe box is much appreciated and helps with the cost of transportation. We will be holding a coffee morning on Wednesday, 1st October from 10 a.m. to 12 midday in the Tickhill Methodist Church lounge, where there will be a stall selling items to fill shoe boxes. Why not come along and join us – everyone is welcome. There will be a service on Sunday, 2nd November in the Methodist Church, Tickhill when you can bring your shoe box to be blessed before they are sent off to bring joy to children who have nothing. You are very welcome to join us and coffee will be served after the service. If this is not convenient please ring Chris on 746827 or Annette on 746539 to arrange a pick up time. Thank you for reading this article.. T 38

Mark and Debbie Gore from Tickhill in Doncaster have recently been appointed by The Royal British Legion as the new Poppy Appeal Organiser’s for the Doncaster Area. In previous years the Poppy Appeal in Doncaster has raised in excess of a staggering £25,000 each year for The Royal British Legion so we are delighted that Mark and Debbie have offered to take over the organising of the appeal in area. When asked about why they wanted to get involved, Mark & Debbie said “we want to get involved in the local community and also give something back to those who have served our Country. Supporting The Royal British Legion is a perfect way to achieve both.” Mia Senior, Community Fundraiser for The Royal British Legion said “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Legion – without them we wouldn’t be able to support so many serving personnel, veterans and their families with practical help and advice.” Mark and Debbie can’t do it all alone and are looking for any extra help. Even if you could just offer a couple of hours during the 2 week Poppy Appeal, or help deliver some collection tins, they would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact them on RBLpoppyGore@hotmail.com or call Mia on 07769 877 443. T

Tickhill Slimming World members Annette Watson, Charlotte Brown, Lisa Hall, Marie Halifax, Julie Beevers, Terri Plummer, Pauline Sissions, Alison Cook, Kath Schuller, Beth Clarke, Laura Carswell, Nicola Brown, Neil Cheetham (support driver) & Consultant Christine Cheetham

Tickhill’s Slimmers raised £303.41 for a leading cancer charity when they held a Slimming World does Race for Life Event on Sunday 20 July starting & ending at Cherry Tree Garden Centre in Tickhill. They collected donations from the town’s residents, visitors & businesses raising £223.41 on the day with another £80 in sponsorship money. “I’m so grateful to everyone who took part and who donated” said Consultant Christine, “people are so generous with their time and money”. The 13 participants, who have lost a combined weight of 26.5 stone, are all members of the Tickhill Slimming World group and held their own 5K event to raise money for Cancer Research UK, the organisation’s charity partner as part of a wider national event running across all Slimming World groups. Christine, who runs the Tickhill Slimming World group every week at the Parish room, says her members loved holding their own Slimming World does Race for Life. “I’m so pleased with how much we raised for Cancer

Research UK and I think the event showed people just how motivating being part of a group like ours can be”. The aim of Slimming World does Race for Life is to raise money for charity while raising awareness about the benefits of getting active, including increasing energy levels, reducing stress, building self-esteem, improving health and helping to maintain a healthy weight. Having an active lifestyle also reduces the risk of developing a range of health conditions including some types of cancer. Garden View

Blooms from Bulbs It may seem early to begin planning next year’s spring and summer colour, but it is essential to get bulbs planted this month (with the exception of Tulips which should be planted in November). The history of bulbs can almost be traced back to the beginning of man, when they would most certainly have been used as food. We know that the ancient Egyptians grew onions and that potatoes (technically tubers) have been cultivated in South America for thousands of years. I wonder what these early people would think to the use of our ornamental onions, such as Allium ‘Pinball Wizard’, grown for their show stopping flowers! Most of the usual subjects including Allium bulbs can be planted right now, and range in price from the very cheap tiny bulbs of Allium sphaerocephalon, to the more rare and expensive giant heads of Allium schubertii. Most kinds of Alliums enjoy a position in full sun, but if you have a very dry and shaded border such as that under a large tree, then try Allium ursinum, more commonly known as wild garlic. Its beautiful lush, low growing green foliage makes a great foil for a woodland setting, as well as producing a mass of white globular flowers borne on short stems. • When buying and planting bulbs, try and follow these general rules: • Wear gloves when handling, 44

TICKHILL TODAY

as some are toxic and can cause skin irritations • Try and buy them loose so you can feel them. Give each a gentle squeeze and check they are firm. Reject any which are not, or appear to have shrivelled, and those showing any sign of mould (normally grey/blue in colour). • Reject any showing excess signs of growth, with either long or pale stems. Bulbs should not be showing any sign of growth, but a short tip is ok • Damaged or split bulbs should not be selected • Plant using a bulb planter, allowing a hole twice the diameter of the bulb and about 3 times the depth, but I would advise to research it as each variety is different. • Place a little bone meal in the hole for good root development Bulbs can also be grown from seed. They take a good few years to flower, around five in my experience, but it’s very satisfying when they finally do and you can even have a go at cross pollinating to make your own varieties. Other favourites of mine are: Tulip ‘Prinses Irene’, an exquisite orange and purple flower Narcissus ‘Thalia’, a white and scented daffodil Galtonia, an imposing 60cm

tall with grass like foliage and a 90cm high flower spike in white Chionodoxa, with around 10 blue blooms per stalk, this is a small but cheery bulb Happy gardening!

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee .

The BIG Sleepout The BIG Sleepout - SAFE@LAST's signature event - returns to all four boroughs of South Yorkshire this Autumn. It's an event where people sleep rough for one night to raise funds and awareness for vulnerable young runaways. The event helps to give participants an insight into what it could be like for the many thousands of young runaways who find themselves sleeping rough. SAFE@LAST is a registered charity working with vulnerable children and young people who have run away from, or have been thrown out of the place where they usually live – or are at risk of doing so. The charity 48

TICKHILL TODAY

provides a 24 hour helpline, web chat and text service, support for the young people and their families, an extensive prevention education programme, a team of street workers and, most remarkably of all the only refuge in the UK for children and young people who are under the age of 16. The BIG Sleepout provides a chance for SAFE@LAST to highlight the struggles young runaways face and for people to have a small taste of what sleeping rough on the streets might be like. When children sleep rough they do it because they feel they have no other choice. They do it because they judge their other options as worse than a cold, lonely, dirty night on the streets. The money raised at The BIG Sleepout's will help the charity to continue to ensure that young people across South Yorkshire know they have a safer choice. Come and join us at Lakeside Village, Doncaster on Friday 26th September, Crystal Peaks, Sheffield on Friday 3rd October, Barnsley (Venue TBC) on Friday 10th October or Parkgate Shopping Centre, Rotherham, on Friday 17th October. Get your friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you, grab your sleeping bag and cardboard, and help raise funds and awareness for young runaways in South Yorkshire. T

Craft and Gift Fair The Tickhill Craft and Gift Fair is on Saturday the 13th of September 2014 and open to the public 9.30am to 1.30pm. It is being held at the Scout and Guide HQ on St Mary’s Road, Tickhill, which is a lovely Hall. The Scouts will be serving tea and coffee all day and there will be a raffle on the day with all the money raised going to the Scout group, and the prizes will be from all the fantastic crafters attending the fair.

The statistics for our teams will be a bit out of date at the time of reading as this article was written at the very end of July. Our Over 60’s team has slipped slightly over the last few weeks and has now won 7 of their 12 games so far this season. Similarly, our Midweek league team has now won 8 of their 11 games having lost a vital game against Brodsworth. Our over 60’s doubles team has won only won one of its last two games since 10th July giving them a total of 7 games won out of the 13 played. We continue to struggle in the Doubles League having won only 2 of the 10 games so far and are languishing towards the bottom of the league.

Attending this fair will be Bakes and Makes, Pins and Doodles, wooden plaques, Phoenix cards, hand made jewellery, knitted toys, books, Krafty Katz, Kathys beads and bangles, Partylite, fluff y bears, old fruitfull vinegars, Forever Living, The End Product, Blue Brick Boutique Lego gifts, plus more. Please come along and support this event and let’s raise some money for the local Scout Group! T

WADWORTH

Wadworth School The spectacular Samba Drummer Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th July were Wadworth pupils’ transition days. An amazing Samba drummer (Keith Angel) came to the school to teach the pupils how to play different kinds of Samba drums. Then on Wednesday every class did a performance to show other pupils what they had prepared.

These are 2 of the next years Year 3 having a go at the Samba drumming

What the pupils thought of the transition days We asked Ava and Elliot, who went into Year 1, what they thought of their transition days. They answered “We really enjoyed the 2 days we spent with Mrs Wilkinson” they also said “ We especially enjoyed the Samba drumming as we got to show the school our drumming skills”. Then we asked Phoebe and Seth (2 pupils who went into Year 2) what they thought. They responded “We had a brilliant time when we went into Mrs Alison’s class! We are really looking forward to her being our teacher”. In addition to the Samba drumming, pupils in the new Year 5 class tried their hand at Samba dancing; one pupil saying it was much harder than football training!

Jumble Sale There will be a jumble sale in the Village Hall on Saturday, 30th August at 2.30 pm. As usual there will be a good choice of clothes, bric-abrac and various other items kindly donated. All proceeds to Yorkshire Air Ambulance. July's jumble sale raised £240 and the organisers would like to thank everyone who donated items and also for the support they received from those buying goods.

Quiz Night with Fish and Chip Supper Friday, 5th September at 7.30 pm Quiz £2. Fish, chips & peas £4.50 (optional) Please contact Maureen by Thursday, 4th September to book a place (and food if required). We look forward to seeing everyone again after a break during August. Hope you all enjoyed the lovely summer (which was glorious sunshine at the time of writing!).

Beetle Drive Friday, 19th September at 7.30 pm

Many classes enjoyed creating Brazilian inspired art work – full of colour ready to brighten up our classrooms when we come back after the Summer holidays.

New!! If you've never been to one before they are lots of fun. Roll a dice and see if you can be the first to draw a complete beetle. No artistic qualities necessary!

As the summer holidays are about to start we would like to wish Mrs May a happy retirement and all the very best for the future as she will not be with us when we come back from our holidays. We have loved having her as our headteacher. T

£4 for the evening, to include tea/coffee.

Summer activities.

On the 17 July 45 members enjoyed a visit to Sheffield for a guided tour of the “Bishops House” a 1500 century half timbered building, the “Cholera Monument Gardens”, the burial site of 400 victims of the 1882 outbreak and the remains of “Wincobank Hill Fort” which dates back to 500 B.C. The day ended with a meal at the “Old Queens Head”. Thanks to Dorothy Bradley for a superb day.

On 26th August, in conjunction with Doncaster Libraries, we held our Local History Fair at Tickhill Library. This year the exhibits had a World War 1 theme and the event doubled the number of people who normally use the library each Saturday. Thanks to Lesley Nicholson who organised the exhibition and her supporters Charles Kelham and Helen Wallder of Doncaster Archives and Local Studies Library.

During the summer we were unfortunate to experience heavy rain and storms and as a consequence the roof on the pavilion demonstrated areas of weakness and rain on several occasions entered the building. Unfortunately on further inspection by the builder it was identified that by next spring the roof will require extensive remedial works. The need to have the repair works has probably been exacerbated by the younger elements of our Community climbing on to the roof. However, the roof is 21years old, and in the long term has done a good job. Also the changing rooms are in need of an overall; tiles are falling off the walls and leave a lot to be desired. I had wished that we could have perhaps managed to do the repairs out of next year’s budget but I have received confirmation of our Football Team wishing to return to us after a year of absence due to field works carried out by D.M.B.C., and I have also had a request from another team to play on alternate Saturdays. Hopefully we will recoup some of the lost revenue. The Diversionary Activities went ahead and a greater number of children attended. This is in Partnership with D.M.B.C., with funding from Tickhill Town Council for the refreshments 62

Cllr Cannings continues to collect litter at an alarming rate; I wonder where it all comes from. I know a lot of you do pick it up too, and it’s good to know that we live in a caring community. Anti social behaviour is still an issue though; I understand this summer we had some youths from another village who caused a lot of problems. Please, if you witness any such Anti social behaviour, report it on 101. Unless we have the statistics we will not get the attention we need or deserve. ACTING TOGETHER A brand new initiative to support local amateur drama societies in villages in Bassetlaw was unleashed last Saturday at Everton Village Hall. It is called Acting Together and is an informal network that brings these already vibrant societies together with the aim of sharing resources and skills. The idea originated at Everton who tempted other groups along to the meeting with a sumptuous cream tea. After a group brainstorm to identify the challenges facing village drama, the official representatives of six local societies have agreed to form a mutually supportive affiliation. It brings together hundreds of local drama enthusiasts. It will enable all of the societies to widen the scope of their productions, offering an even great range of entertainment than they already do to theatre goers across North Nottinghamshire. The Drama Societies involved are Bawtry Players, Blyth Players, Haxey Players, The Youth Theatre Worksop, Gainsborough Players and Everton Village Players.

There will be a Blood Clinic held in Bawtry during September Venue: Bawtry New Hall, Station Road, DN10 6PU Date: Friday 19th September Time: 1-3.30pm and 4.30-7.15pm T

Acting Together was the brainchild of three members of Everton: Linda Larder, Margaret Hamilton and Jan Bailey. Linda, who facilitated the meeting on Saturday said “We are all very excited that we can now offer even more benefits to our members as well as our audiences who will be encouraged to support each others productions”.

POSTPONED

She said that Amateur drama groups are very important to their villages, because they are part of the glue that holds village communities together. She continued “Acting Together will ensure the societies are sustained long into the future.

Please note that the Strawberry Teas event that was planned for the afternoon of Saturday 6th September has been postponed. Ruth Barnett and Judy Horton will be re-arranging the event and look forward to welcoming you on a future date. T 66
