“Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.” John F. Kennedy Back to school time again already! Good luck to all those starting school or nursery for the first time, moving to a new school, heading off to College, University, Apprenticeship or first job. The holidays do seem to have gone quickly to me, but then they always do! This year I was lucky to enjoy a break in Croatia, where 14 of us enjoyed the amazing coastline and scenery, swam in the pool and sea, paddle boarded, pedaloed, took boat trips and enjoyed some great food and drink, as well spending lots of time relaxing and making some great memories. Back in July I took up the challenge to complete a Macmillan Mighty Hike - 26miles of the Thames path. I had just 2 weeks to prepare for the walk and raise a minimum of £250 for Macmillan. Fortunately, lots of dog walking, dancing, cricket and kettlebell training over recent months meant I was fit enough to complete the challenge, despite the limited preparation time. What I hadn’t fully appreciated was how long it takes to walk that distance, and how much my feet would hurt afterwards! A big thank you to Owen James at All for You Physio for providing a pre-walk treatment to ensure I was in good shape, and massive thanks to all those who sponsored me. £555 +gift aid has gone to Macmillan and my Just Giving page remains open if anyone else would like to donate to this amazing charity https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/paula-mickley Whatever you have been doing this summer I hope you got the opportunity to enjoy a little bit of relaxation time and make some memories with your loved ones. The October issue will be delivered to you very late September, if you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th September. Enjoy September and I will be back in a months’ time with your October magazine.
Best wishes,

This is the third consecutive charity cricket match organised by Doncaster Business for the Community (DB4C); the first time the match will be played in Tickhill. According to Tickhillian Richard Clarke, “We are delighted to support The Hygiene Bank and the Create a Dream Foundation with proceeds raised through the cricket match. The Hygiene Bank supplies soaps and other hygiene products to food banks and homeless groups. The Create a Dream Foundation is a local charity granting wishes for terminally ill children, such as trips to Lego Land and Disney World Paris.”
T
DB4C is a registered charity created by the business community in support of the wider community of Doncaster. The charity is entirely supported by businesspeople who volunteer their time. So all proceeds support charitable causes benefiting the people of Doncaster. Dozens of charities have been sponsored to date by DB4C. The charity recently donated £5,000 to the Children’s Air Ambulance from funds raised during the Crown Hotel Bawtry Business Community Cup, held at Keepmoat Stadium. DB4C also organises a black tie ball, the Diamond Ball, taking place at Bawtry Hall on 28th September.

CHILDREN’S TRAIL MAYFLOWER 400 CHURCH T
The Arts Society Dukeries’ latest Trail of Discovery is at St Wilfrid’s Church in Scrooby, North Nottinghamshire.
The village may be small, but it is renowned, especially in the USA, for being the home of William Brewster, the Pilgrim Father. He sailed on the Mayflower in 1620 and founded the Plymouth Colony in New England, but in the early years of the 17thcentury Brewster’s home, Scrooby Manor House, became the meeting place for the Separatist Church. The church contains three benches, commonly known as the Brewster Pews, made up of carved 16th century bench ends.

They were welcomed by the vicar, Rev Jackie Mckenna, and joined by members of The Arts Society Dukeries and Scrooby Parish Councillors for a most enjoyable and informative evening. The trail was printed with support from Bassetlaw District Council.

TICKHILL
NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Tickhill Town Council has decided to review and update its Neighbourhood Plan, in line with Doncaster’s new Local Plan, which was made public at the end of July. As our Plan was the first in the
county, with few completed examples elsewhere in the country, we were in sense blazing a trail and learning as we went along. So, we now have the opportunitya to benefit from our experience, and that of other parishes, and to iron out any wrinkles. Our origwinal plan was delayed when we were advised to split it into two parts and this division we will repeat, not least because the planning inspector who approves it only considers the policies which govern planning applications. Whether we will need to go through all the same hoops again will depend on his or her decision. What have we achieved and will seek to build on? Parking was a major issue raised 6 years ago but we will only see the modification of controls on the street in providing short-term (1 hour), 2 hour and unlimited time in the town centre this year. We have set a 3-hour limit for the Council’s own car park, so that it is clearly for shoppers, not for all-day parking. This will need monitoring to see what difference it makes, as parking must benefit local trade. Doncaster Council has reinforced the go slow markings on Northgate but we haven’t so far conducted any further checks on speed or on heavy goods vehicles passing through the town; we are still looking for ways to get them to use the quicker new route to Bawtry from the M18 through the Great Yorkshire Way. It is a great disappointment that through traffic seems to increase when we hoped it would reduce; we will be taking traffic counts later in the year. The problem continues. We and Doncaster Council have opposed the substantial housing development proposed in Harworth which would add traffic to already busy main roads, and particularly aggravate the already hazardous Stripe Road junction. On a more positive note, we have produced our promotional leaflet ‘This is Tickhill’ and the history board opposite Spar showing the main features of
16
T
the town for visitors. We have sought protection for the allotments behind what was The Club, by designating them in the Neighbourhood Plan, so making it harder for anyone to close them. We are supporting the creation of a pocket park behind the Library where the old public toilets were and are grateful that alternative facilities are now available in the Library, which is now run by volunteers. We have promoted the planting of colourful wildflowers on suitable roadside and open spaces and been actively involved in tree planting on Tickhill Spital. The flood protection work in Lindrick is complete at the time of writing and looking good. We have a lease on the wood we call ‘Tickhill Wildwood’, alongside the track parallel to the motorway, where a circular path is there to use at your own risk! Planning applications come to the Council for comment and we generally try to support the views of residents. However, although Doncaster planners are obliged to take note of Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan, we do not always get our way! Building in gardens and the protection of limestone walls are two particular areas to watch. We have recently conducted surveys to indicate housing need; whether the town will be required to provide new housing land as a result of the new Doncaster Plan has yet to become clear. Looking to the future, it is the second section of the plan which is most likely to see changes as it contains the aspirations of the town for its future; your views are vitally important. We are currently facing the challenge of empty business premises in the town centre; these we are determined to fill if we possibly can – empty shops or closed pubs are a terrible advertisement for Tickhill. The issue of traffic and its speed remains unsolved; significant changes will cost money we do not have. Residents have raised questions about the safety of walkers and cyclists, especially in the context of children going to our schools; we shall look for proposals in this area. The Council has spent money on well-supported holiday activities for children and we shall continue to support those who serve our young people so well.

WILDLIFE TRUST North Notts Local Group Talks
The new CEO of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust will give the opening lecture for the North Notts local group’s 2019 – 20 lecture series. Paul Wilkinson has been in post since January 2019. He is nature conservationist who cares deeply about wildlife and has ambitious plans for the future of the wildlife of Nottinghamshire. He says, “Our natural world is under increasing pressure, and across the globe climate emergencies are being announced. At the same time, we know that there are many thousands of people, in Nottinghamshire alone, who love wildlife, and are, or would, do something to help protect it and set it on a path to recovery. We therefore need to mobilise more people than ever, around 1 in 4 from every walk of life, to take action and stand up for wildlife.” Paul will outline the Trusts’ vision for a Wilder Nottinghamshire, and how everyone can play a part in bringing it about. This meeting will be held in the Rural Learning Centre at the Idle Valley, North Road (A638), Retford DN22 8RQ on September 12 2019. The meeting starts at 7.30pm. Admission £2.50 includes refreshments. All welcome, including non-members.
FOR MORE INFORMATION Phone Jan 01777 709974 or 07969180067 or email janwilliamson133@gmail.com If you would like to receive email updates of Local Group activities, please email Jan with your request.

LIFESTYLE
Dress for your Shape When it comes to looking good, it’s not your size or shape that matters, it’s the fit of your garments. Wearing the right clothes shouldn’t be about following the latest fashion trends; it should be about choosing what actually suits you and your body proportions to make you feel comfortable and confident. Women come in all shapes - the key is to know your proportions, and use fashion to accentuate your best features! When we dress, we are trying to present an image that is pleasing to the eye. We want to receive those compliments that tell us that we look great, because then, and only then, will we believe that we do look great! This allows us to feel good about ourselves.
are more along the lines of whether or not it will look good on you, without thinking about how will it accentuate your body shape so that it does look good on you. Colour is an important feature, and how we display it is the most important aspect.
Perhaps one of the most important reasons for having difficulty while selecting an outfit from your wardrobe would be the simple fact that the wardrobe is lacking in outfits that flatter your body shape. How many times have you played the “try on as many outfits as possible in 30 minutes” game while looking for the perfect outfit to wear, only to be left with the same decision and a mountain of clothes to put away? The actual problem is not that you have nothing to wear; it is that you have nothing in the wardrobe that flatters your figure/ colouring.
The aim should be to take the attention away from the aspect of our body that is the least pleasing to us and place it elsewhere. In order to accomplish this, you need to consider your body shape, decide which feature you wish to accent more, and discover how to accomplish that.
Here are some helpful tips:
Those of you who are top heavy and have a full bust will want to draw the eye to the lower portion of your physique. Wear a bolder color/pattern from the waist down, and a softer/plain colour above.
So, for many, the decision about “what to wear” is made as you purchase. Exactly how should you choose your outfits? Let’s start first by exploring how you currently go about selecting your clothing.
If you are thin everywhere, you will want to accentuate your figure by adding dimension. You can do this by choosing outfits that are loose and flowing, and by wearing horizontal patterns.
Many ladies are drawn first by the colors and patterns. Your thoughts
If you are bottom heavy and have full hips, you will want to select clothing
20
that draws the eye to the top of your body. You can accomplish this by wearing a splash of color or a bold print on the upper part of your figure, and a solid, darker color below the waist. For those of you who are wide everywhere, you will want to stay away from bold patterns or prints. Draw the eye to the upper portion of your torso to create a focal point. Those of you who have the envied luck to have a perfect hourglass figure have the easiest path of all. Also, remember that simple clothing that fits well is far better than fancier clothing that just “doesn’t look right.”

OUT & ABOUT
T
Our meeting took place on the 1st August, though very few people were able to be present. This is, of course, the popular holiday
season and perhaps we might decide in the future not to meet during the months of July and August as so few people can manage to attend. A good number of suggestions for further visits however were made including:
BRUCE’S HAPPY TAIL
• Live ballet at the Savoy in Worksop • Music in the Round at Cast in Doncaster • New seasons concerts [including the Halle] starting in September at Sheffield City Hall • Music Live at Phoenix Theatre in Bawtry during September • Drama "Prescription for Murder" at the Phoenix Theatre, Bawtry during November and • Thurnscoe Mining Choir at Stainton during November. If any of the above would interest you please be sure to come to our next meeting at the Community Centre at Castle Close on Thursday, 5th September, 2019 at 10.00 am. We look forward to seeing you there.
Carol Frankland
Bruce, the American Bulldog, had a tough start in life, until he was rescued by the Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch of the RSPCA. Originally brought to the animal centre by an inspector as part of a welfare case, Bruce’s skin was in a terrible state. He was a lovely, affectionate and playful dog who loved people, long strolls in the paddock and playing with balls – he could certainly give Lionel Messi a run for his money! Despite being in such discomfort with his skin condition, he was a gentle and affectionate dog. After waiting for almost a year, he finally got a lucky break. A family arrived at the Animal Centre and fell in love with Bruce and offered him the forever home he deserved. Bruce is just one story – 890 animals were rehomed from the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre last year. The Branch’s mission is to rehabilitate and re-home vulnerable animals and this work relies on kind donations from the public and local businesses.

The Luttrell Psalter
Work and play in rural Medieval Lincolnshire are illustrated in this treasured manuscript commissioned by Sir Geoffrey Luttrell in 1325. Simon Thomson, expert and lecturer in Archaeology and Geology, will explain in his entertaining, illustrated talk how this unique document depicts everyday life on the manor. The richly illuminated manuscript reveals fascinating detail of lively and often humorous images of work and play during a year on the manor in the 14th Century.
Bruce’s story took place because of the support received from a variety of sources. The four RSPCA shops are a vital source of income (Maltby, Bawtry, Rossington and Thorne), and raise awareness of the Centre. Every purchase and donation helps the Branch to continue vital rehabilitation and rehoming work. Other ways to help include volunteering some of your time or sponsoring rescue animals through the Safe Haven programme. At the Animal Centre there is a pet supplies store. The Branch also provides a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets.
Visitors are welcome to join us on Thursday, 12th September, 7 for 7.30, at the Methodist Schoolroom.

PUBLIC PERCEPTION OF PHYSIOTHERAPY The Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (CSP) recently carried out a survey to determine how the public perceives Physiotherapy. One area looked at whether people were happy to see a Physiotherapist rather than a GP as a first point of contact for a musculoskeletal problem (the survey specifically used back or neck pain as an example). Happily 73% of respondents said they would be happy to see a Physiotherapist instead of a GP in order to address the problem quickly with the right clinician for the job!

Of the patients who would still prefer to see a GP first, some had concerns that a Physiotherapist might ‘miss something’. Unlike a surprising number of European countries, Physiotherapists in the UK have been autonomous since 1977 – this means we are qualified to act as first contact practitioners, patients can seek our services without referral from another health professional and we have the freedom to exercise our professional judgement with regards to treatment. As such, our undergraduate training reflects the need for Physiotherapists to be able to identify patients for whom other medical investigations or interventions are necessary. Furthermore, our professional obligation to our ongoing professional development means there are many avenues by which we stay up to date with medical advances and developments. We may pick up a wide range of medical conditions from diabetes to circulatory issues to serious pathologies such as cancer. So, patients in the UK can enjoy being able to choose to access a Physiotherapist without needing a GP referral and can be confident that we have the skills and training needed to identify any issues requiring medical attention.

TICKHILL ST MARY’S
FOREST SCHOOL Tickhill St Marys Primary School firmly believes that learning experiences outdoors are just as important as learning in the classroom.
“The best classroom and the richest classroom is roofed only by the sky”. Marget McMillan. Adopting the Forest School ethos, the school has been hard at work developing its very own forest school site where the children can learn a range of new skills whilst reconnecting with nature. The children are given the opportunity to learn how to use a variety of tools such as bill hooks, bow saws, whittling knives and loppers. They use these newfound skills to create artwork, to make natural tools and implements or to help wildlife and the environment thrive by making items such as bug hotels and birdboxes. The children also learn skills such as fire making, outdoor cooking and den building skills which they get to put to good use cooking sausages, roasting marshmallows and using Kelly kettles to make hot chocolate come rain or shine. Not only do the children learn an array of new skills but they also learn about their own impacts on the
30
environment both negative and positive and thus giving the next generation not only the passion but also the knowledge so that they will be mother nature’s protectors for years to come. Families, local businesses and companies have been really generous in offering donations and services that have enhanced our Forest School site. These donations and services have allowed us to purchase a log cabin, obtain a wide range of tools and materials and install a solid brick fire pit. As such we would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank; All the family and friends of the school that donated waterproof clothing, pots and pans and a mountain of wellies. Mr and Mrs Yates and their children Katie-Louise and Daniella for purchasing 4 new sawhorses. Tesco at Woodfield Plantation for their £3,000 donation. Persimmon Holmes for their £1,000 donation. Empire Property Concepts for supplying and building our fire pit for free. We look forward to exciting times ahead, developing our site further and teaching the children skills beyond their everyday experiences.

LI O NS in Tickhill & Wadworth The Rock House Residential Home Family Fireworks Extravaganza Saturday 2nd November Tickhill Cricket Club 5.00pm onwards. Thank you to Rock House Residential Home for sponsorship of the fireworks. A lot of things have to be organised like:- local authority permissions, medical support, the fire service have to be advised. The firework display has to be purchased and co-ordinated with safety of paramount importance. Risk assessments have to be drafted, Lions and our helpers assigned to specific roles, it all takes a lot of planning. But it’s worth it to see so many people enjoying a fun night out. Just one note of caution - no sparklers please. Hot food available
Christmas Update
Autumn will soon be here, the youngsters are returning to school and our thoughts are turning to…..Christmas!! Yes, before we know it Christmas will soon be here. We are busy planning to take Santa around the district and to the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. New for this year, we hope to have a tracker on the float so that the children can track Santa’s progress on Facebook. As always, we rely on an army of volunteers to help with the collections. If you can spare three hours or so (6 to 9) on any night from mid-December onwards please get in touch. If you would like to get involved or if you think we may be able to help you or a community project please get in touch. Call in to Pavillion Harworth 3rd Sept 8.30pm or Blacksmiths Harworth 17th Sept 8.30pm to have an informal chat.

Lions Eye Health Programme Working to Save Sight
Globally there are 253 million people who are blind or have moderate to severe distance vision impairment (MSVI). 1.1 billion have near-vision impairment simply because they don’t have a pair of glasses. 75% of all blindness and MSVI is avoidable. 89% of people with visual impairment live in developing countries. Lions from all over the world support various international projects. We should not forget the two million plus people in the UK living with sight loss, that’s around one person in 30. They don’t all have guide dogs, and/ or a white cane, or wear dark glasses. The majority of these people are just like you and me, but don’t see so well. It is estimated that the official number of people registered can be multiplied by 3 or 4. We are happy to promote World Sight Day, 10th October to highlight the need for all of us to have our eyes tested regularly.
MIAB
Message in a Bottle (MIAB) is a simple idea that helps emergency services locate medical information about people (particularly the elderly) found in emergency situations at home. The Lions are offering to talk to WI groups and other clubs who might be interested in spreading the word about MIAB. Put a copy of your persciption in the bottle, place the bottle in the fridge and stick the sticker on the door of the fridge - simples Email: Phone: Website: Facebook:

A fantastic start for Tickhill Ladies Cricket Team In their first real season Tickhill’s newly formed ladies cricket team have been hugely successful at all of the events they have attended. They are currently undefeated and taking the local ladies cricket scene by storm!

It’s a totally inclusive team that includes ladies of all ages and abilities and anyone is welcome to come along to training sessions and have a go. Already 33 ladies are registered, aged between 9 and 69. Playing with a softball and to rules resembling those of junior cricket, no one needs to worry about needing protective gear or about matches that go on all day. Women’s cricket is great fun and very sociable. Interested in finding out more? Contact Nicola Saunders on 07956 023514 The team wish to thank their sponsors TLP, RJR
GAINSBOROUGH CHORAL SOCIETY’S TH 159
SEASON ABOUT TO COMMENCE T
Gainsborough Choral Society’s 159th season starts on Thursday 5th September when rehearsals for the exciting new season start.
The first concert is on Saturday 16th November and is Handel’s ever-popular Messiah. It is 10 years since the society last performed this work, so this is a wonderful opportunity to hear it again. Regular soloists Helen Winter, Jennifer Parker Timothy Langston and Terence Ayebare have been engaged. The second concert of the season is Carols for All, which takes place on Saturday 14th December and includes QEHS singers and instrumentalists. The final concert takes place on Saturday 28th March 2020 and is a performance of ‘Not the Messiah (he’s a very naughty boy)’, a comic oratorio written by Eric Idle and John du Prez, the composers behind the award-winning musical ‘Spamalot’, and based upon Monty Python’s ‘Life of Brian’. This will be the first performance of this work to be given by an amateur choir, so it is a considerable coup for the society to have secured the permissions to undertake this challenging work. For this concert, the society will be augmented by The City of Lincoln Male Voice Choir. The soloists from the November concert will again be performing and will be joined by Trevor Fenton, and Simon Nicholson – who

played King Arthur in a recent Lincoln production of ‘Spamalot’. (‘Not the Messiah’ is presented through special arrangements with Theatrical Rights Worldwide.) All concerts take place in All Saints’ Church, Gainsborough, DN21 2JR at 7.30 p.m. and are accompanied by the Lincoln Pro Musica Orchestra, all under the baton of Musical Director Richard Green. The Society always welcomes new members and anyone interested in joining should contact the secretary, Deirdre Speed, on 07710 535725 or email info@gainsboroughcs.co.uk , or just come along to the first rehearsal on Thursday 5th September at Queen Elizabeth High School, Morton Terrace, Gainsborough, DN21 2ST The Society runs a popular Patrons Scheme that gives not only a large discount on the normal ticket price but also offers priority booking of reserved seats. An application form can be found on the society’s website. For more information see: website: www.gainsboroughcs.co.uk or Facebook page: www.facebook.com/Gainsborough-ChoralSociety-270847546262604/

SAMARITAN'S PURSE OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD As we are nearing autumn, our thoughts will soon be turning towards Christmas and thinking about filling shoe boxes to send to children who have nothing.
The Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child sends shoe boxes filled with toys, books, pens, etc to children who have nothing - their faces are full of delight and happiness as they open their box as this is probably the only gift the children will receive at Christmas. During the last 25 years 157,782,657 shoe boxes have been sent to 163 countries and territories. If you would like to fill a shoe box, leaflets giving information and guidance on what to put in the boxes will be available from the beginning of September in Tickhill Library. Flat pack boxes will be on sale at the Library
or at the Coffee Morning at Tickhill Methodist Church on Wednesday, 2nd October. Items for sale at the coffee morning will include notebooks, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, pencil cases, hats/gloves, soap, flannels, toothbrushes, toys, colouring books and crayons, soft toys, combs, hair accessories, musical instruments. Notebooks, pens and pencils are particularly useful as this enables the older children to attend school if they have their own writing material. Due to increasing customs regulations toothpaste and sweets can no longer be included in the shoe boxes. If you are unable to fill a box yourself, why not get a group of friends to contribute and share the cost - as the well known saying goes 'every little helps'!
TICKHILL
HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY T The first Saturday in September is a regular date in the Horticultural Society’s diary, with the annual Horticultural Show taking place in the Methodist Church Schoolrooms. Saturday 7th September is the date for the 32nd Show, and we are very pleased to confirm that Rev Ali Earl will be opening the Show at 2pm. The admission price is only £1, so why not come along and see all the produce on display? Many people of Tickhill have put time and effort into their entries, and as always we thank them all. Maybe if you see the entries, it may inspire you to put a note in your diary for next year to enter yourself! In addition to the Show entries, we have refreshments available all afternoon, with a raffle and tombola. The Maltby Brass Band has been asked to provide some musical entertainment outside, so even though we have a marquee planned, let’s keep our fingers crossed for a fine day! Barbara Hickman from the Helmsley Walled Garden,

I can deliver leaflets and flat packs if you are unable to get to the library or coffee morning and also collect any filled boxes. Your help would be very much appreciated - a shoe box would bring a great deal of happiness into a child's life. Many thanks. Any queries please phone Chris Watson on 07910 176644

told us at the July meeting of how their garden has been renovated for a virtually derelict state, and from the pictures she showed, it looks like a good day out if you’re in the York and North Yorkshire area. We have a change of speaker for the September meeting, which will now be “Wack’s Wicked Plants”, which is about carnivorous plants such as Venus Fly Traps. Unfortunately, Liz Webster, who was scheduled to visit us, cannot now do so, and we hope to hear her speak on the “Delights and Disasters of Running a Nursery” some time in the future. We always welcome visitors to our meetings at only £3 per visit, although it’s only £8 to join for the rest of the year. Meetings are in the Methodist Church Schoolrooms and begin at 7.15pm, usually ending at 9 o’clock, with a refreshment break half way through. You always know the height of summer is past when the topic of Christmas turns up. We announced at the July meeting that we are planning a preChristmas trip to Harewood House on the Sunday, 24th November. Such was the level of interest that we already have only 6 places left on the coach, so anyone else that wants to go will need to get their name on the list promptly!

DEAR FRIENDS
T IT SEEMS TO ME THAT EVERY SEASON IN THE CHURCH HAS ITS HIGH POINTS In Autumn we celebrate harvest with festivals and feasting, giving thanks to God for his creation and his ongoing care of it. In Winter we celebrate Christmas and the birth of God’s son Jesus, born not in a palace to royal parents but in a stable to a poor, vulnerable young woman so that God can know exactly what it is like to be one of us and so that we can know God intimately. In Spring we celebrate Easter by walking with Jesus through the last days of his life on earth. We contemplate what it must feel like to be abandoned by your friends, betrayed by those closest to you, lied about in court, and manipulated by the powers that be, to be divine but yet to accept humiliation and torture to open for us the gates of heaven, forever. In Summer we are privileged to celebrate love, as this is the wedding season, when couples make vows and exchange rings surrounded by their loved ones in our beautiful sacred spaces.
One of the most popular readings chosen by couples for their wedding ceremony in our churches is this, it is advice given in a letter to one of the first Christian churches from its founder, Saint Paul. Love is patient. Love is kind. Love knows no envy. Love does not boast. Love is not arrogant. Love is not rude. Love does not insist upon its rights. Love never becomes exasperated with another. Love never broods over imagined wrongs or slights. Love finds no pleasure in anything that is wrong. Love rejoices in the truth Love can bear anything. Love is completely trusting.
To be this loving is a huge challenge. But we are not left to do this on our own. We are surrounded by friends and family to love and who love us. We live and work and socialise in communities which provide us with plenty of people to practice on. And we have a pattern for our loving in Jesus who put us first. If you would like to find out more about this amazing sacrifice, please visit us in one of our local churches, you will be made most welcome. Love and Peace

TICKHILL PARISH ROOM NEWS T
The Parish Room in Tickhill has seen many changes in its long history. We have been refurbished for 11 years now and many of these changes have happened over these last 11 years, although mostly the changes would be merely updating technology. Our modern, up-to-date, well-equipped and efficient kitchen is one of the most surprising things when you come into the building. For an outwardly historical building, complete with carvings above the old door arches, the building is not what you imaging it once looked like. Perhaps you would imagine an old spit roaster in the huge stone fireplace, maybe an open fire roaring under it? You would also probably imagine candles flickering in sconces around the walls and candles in the large round ceiling lights, rather than modern led light bulbs? The medieval kitchen would have an old open fire, complete with hook for hanging the kettle on, and maybe a bread oven beside it. There would be stone flags instead of the modern-day safety regulation nonslip flooring. John Marsden would be making his soup on the open fire – risking scalding the ‘staff’ and endangering the ‘customer’s’ lives! No modern dishwashers for the cook in those days – the washing up would take Kathie Mason and John’s helpers hours!! Also, it would be the poor of Tickhill who were having the soup – so no fund raising donations either!!
Now we leap forward to 2019 and wonder what changes might occur in our Bookings Diary in 2020. Obviously, we can’t see into that
future –so we will stick to what we know to be our regular bookings which are as follows: MONDAYS Probus on the second and fourth from 10 a.m. Ukulele Group – every Monday, all welcome from Beginners upwards, 7.00 p.m.

SATURDAYS Every Saturday – Parish Room Coffee Morning, 10am – 12 noon Cat from Oracle Soul Goddess holds various Healing Courses and a regular Healing Circle in the Parish Room. Cat is passionate about supporting all women to awaken, heal and transform. If you would like any further information about the above regular bookings or would like to discuss your own event, ‘do’, celebration, party, class, fund raiser, etc., please ring me on 07840 419763. Several dates over the Christmas holidays are still available, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and New Years Eve and New Years Day, if you are still wondering how to fit all the family and friends into your home without a family feud. The solution is but a phone call away! At £12 per hour (£18 for commercial/business bookings) our rates are very competitive, this includes all of the kitchen equipment except the dishwasher and oven and we have beautiful white and cream tablecloths you can hire at a very reasonable rate. Our projector is also available at £6 per booking. What have you got to lose Ring - Book - Sorted - Relax!

COMMUNITY BRAITHWELL & MICKLEBRING
RECREATION AND LEISURE ASSOCIATION LTD (BMRLA) The Ruddle Centre, Braithwell T
TICKHILL’S TREES
BMRLA is a registered charity that provides a community facility for groups and individuals to access recreational, leisure and learning opportunities. T
At a recent meeting of the Trees Working Party, DMBC outlined their planned work within Tickhill for the 2019/20 planting season. They have started surveying all trees on
St.Leger owned land and aim to complete this by the end of September. From the state of the trees, they will prepare a work plan, where pruning or felling and replacement is needed and this will be submitted to Tickhill Town Council to allow local input. DMBC will then look at the trees in open areas and seek to establish ownership before extending the work to the trees (about a thousand) that are on their database. The new limes inter-planted between the Victorian trees on Bawtry Road have survived well. The only remaining section to fill in is on the South side between Great Black Lane and Goole Dike, where the bank is too steep to accept planting of the same sized trees. DMBC are attempting to source smaller trees, of the same upright variety, to complete the work. Four flowering cherry trees on Rotherham Road are dying as a result of infection by the horseshoe fungus and will be replaced with further flowering cherries, the work being scheduled for early September. The Countryside Group is currently surveying significant privately owned trees, where this can be done from public land. So do not be alarmed by their clipboards and binoculars and feel free to enquire. The Group has now removed about 40% of the 200 ash trees in Jubilee Wood and part replanted with other species. Roe deer have recently colonised Tickhill and have damaged some of the saplings planted in Tickhill Wildwood, beside the A(1)M. It is nice to have them, but deer are the main conduit for Lyme disease, transmitted by tick infestation. I am not aware of any local cases yet, but it is probably advisable to cover legs, e.g. by tucking trousers in socks, when walking through local tall grass or woodland.
Tony Sheridan (Tel. 01302 742556) 52
It operates from The Ruddle Centre, a purposebuilt community centre with playing field, serving the villages of Braithwell and Micklebring and surrounding areas. The Trustees of BMRLA are currently seeking volunteers to help them manage The Ruddle Centre. Working with DMBC, the Parish Council and Sport England, the Trustees have recently secured funding to improve the facilities at The Ruddle Centre and provide changing rooms for users of the playing field. Additional Trustees, Committee members and volunteers are now required to help ensure that the building and outdoor facilities are fully utilised, and the services provided meet the needs of the community. Experience is not as important as enthusiasm and the desire to put something back into the community. The time commitment is entirely up to the individual and even an hour or so a week can make a big difference. For further information about becoming a Trustee, or volunteering some time or expertise, please contact Mike Hoyes on 01709 816410.

Tickhill
. . . but not TODAY
Tickhill and District We begin the Autumn/Winter season with one of our well known speakers, Jean Townend from Newark, who will entertain us with a talk on Queen Victoria. Victoria rose above a very difficult childhood to become one our longest serving Queens, but we will hear from Jean about her private life behind closed doors. A new History Profile Paper is in preparation for publication this autumn. It will focus on Charlotte Curtis née Laughton born at Lindrick House in 1824. You can find out, for example, how she came to be Mayoress of Manchester, why she later lived at Weardale House in the centre of Tickhill, what additional job her coachman had to undertake and how Tickhill benefited from her wealth.

Local History Society The summer outing to Salford Quays, the Lowry Museum, Northern Imperial War Museum and Ordsall Hall still has a few seats available. The Coach will leave the Methodist Church at 9.00am on 12th September, returning at 4.30pm. Tickets are £15, on sale in the library. Please help to reduce the queue to renew your membership, by putting your annual fee (£6 per person) in an envelope, together with your name and address into the library. We look forward to seeing everyone at our first meeting on Thursday 19th September, new members and visitors are always made welcome.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST T
Well, here we are into September already and we do hope you all enjoyed the summer whether at home or away.
We are so grateful to everyone who has raised money on our behalf this past month. The Shoe Room in Priory Walk raised £1,135 which really took us by surprise! Stratstone BMW on Wheatley Hall Road held a coffee morning and afternoon tea at their showroom and made £194. Janine sent us photos of the food which made our mouth water. Space doesn’t allow us to mention everyone here who donated, but please check out our website for more information. Are you planning on taking part in one of the marathon or half marathon races (such as the Great North Run on 8th September) or any other sporting events? Or are you simply wanting to organise an event on our behalf? Please do get in touch with us as we can supply you with
T-shirts, etc., and can advertise your event on our website. We are making preparations for our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre. This year it will be from Monday, 25th November until Friday, 20th December. We have some lovely new items which you can buy in memory of loved ones and will have more information for you in the next issues. Don’t forget, we are always in need of volunteers and you will be made very welcome. Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. It doesn’t matter how small your donation, it all goes towards the biopsy machine for Doncaster Royal Infirmary. Our charity has always believed that local money should support local people.

We went away for a week to an international camp, CAMJAM2019, in Cambridgeshire with 1500 other scouts and guides from around the world. It rained like it never meant to stop. The wind blew with all its might but we survived. We danced, ate ice cream and hot dogs in the wet. We played It’s a Knockout in the wind and rain. It wasn’t really necessary for the games makers to spray everyone with soapy water but they did. Then, the sun came out. We zorbed, stilt walked, sailed, go karted, pedal karted, hover boarded, climbed, caved, lit fires, laser quested and we even went to the cinema. Most importantly, we learnt to live together and trust each other. Oh, and we ate our way through a mountain of food even though, before we turned up for our meals, we had demolished cartons of chips!! All this in one week; Scouting at its best –#Skills for Life!!
60
All good things come to an end, but must they? We need to keep this going, growing as we go. Today, we have over 70 youngsters wanting to do Scouting in Tickhill. We have the young people, we have the premises, we have the kit – what we don’t have is YOU! You don’t need to be Bear Grylls to join us. You don’t need to have been a Scout when you were younger. You don’t even need to know how to put up a tent or tie a knot. Everyone is welcome to come along and help out. We will show you how. You might be surprised just what you can do!! Volunteer today and help us prepare more young people with skills for life. Get in touch with me for more information. Bob Kitchen. Started in the 1950's as Doncaster Cine Guild at the height of enthusiasm for cine film, Doncaster Movie Makers has evolved over the years, adapting to the changing film formats and equipment. But we are still essentially the same as the original members - keen, enthusiastic, amateur film makers, who help each other produce films and advise on new equipment and editing software. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced filmmaker, Doncaster Movie Makers exists to bring like-minded individuals together to share knowledge, have fun and explore the fascinating world of filmmaking - from script to screen. Or you might just like to watch films. We have demonstrations, visiting speakers and film competitions. As a Club we film local events and attractions, such as the Tour de Yorkshire. In 2019 we will be showing films on themes such as “What I did today” and holding competitions for films inspired by the word “AFT” and Music Videos.
The NuOla South Yorkshire Roosters are a team that participate in a high paced, non-contact and exciting version of American Football called ‘Flag Football’. American Flag Football is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. The aim of Flag Football is to stop the ball carrier from scoring by removing their flag. The Roosters compete in the Middle England Conference Division One League, and are ranked the number one team in that division in South Yorkshire. In the 2019 season, the Roosters finished 25th out of 40 teams in Division One in the United Kingdom. The team includes a mixture of both male and female players, aged 16 and over, from all over South Yorkshire and beyond. The team currently has 4 female players who represent Great Britain in Flag Football, and two male members who qualified through to the final stages of selection for Great Britain. The NuOla South Yorkshire Roosters are always looking to recruit new players to the team, whether they have experience of playing American Football or not. Just bring enthusiasm and a bottle of water, as the first three training sessions are free at Rossington, Doncaster; the Roosters training ground.
