W

the JANUARY 2014 edition

And so we welcome another year… 2014. I do hope that all readers have had an enjoyable Christmas, and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. As I write this, there are still 2 weeks before the big day but I know that this time will fly past and I am determined to make time to enjoy all the things that make this time of year special. For me many of the school related activities will be the last ones, as my youngest will join her brother and sister at secondary school next September, so no more Christmas Fairs, nativity plays and school Christingle services that are part and parcel of the run up to Christmas at primary school. Maybe after 11 years of manning a tombola at a PTA Christmas Fair, I will get a year off next year! 2014 may be upon us by the time you read this, if not it won’t be far away, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers and their families a very happy New Year, I hope the year ahead will be not only happy but a memorable one for you. The February issues will be delivered to you from the 25th January. If you would like to have something included in this, then please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th January.

Wishing you a Peaceful 2014 T

Best wishes, Paula x

We’ve been to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park - on the bus. We’ve had a day out at Sandall Beat Wood den building and enjoying a picnic. We went to a special Harvest Festival Service at St Marys Church donating tinned goods for the Doncaster Homeless Shelter. We’ve enjoyed a weekly visit from Little Well Bees using singing, music and movement and learning Makaton. We’ve had weekly soccer sessions on the Recreation Ground with the coaches from Mini Kicks. There have been umpteen walks around the village, the duck pond, the playgrounds, the library and the shops. We learned songs to sing in the Church at the Tickhill Late Night Shopping event. We took a trip to the pantomime on the bus! (Oh yes we did!) We went to Church for the Christingle service and everyone enjoyed mince pies, while the grown-ups had some mulled wine too, all provided by the Nursery! We did our Nativity Play for all the mummies, daddies and carers. Santa came to see us on December 23rd!

We were so tired by the end of all that, we needed a break! Nursery will re-open on January 2nd 2014.

Do you want be there to see what we can do next ? Call now on 01302 742629 and speak to Sue, Lucy, Lisa or Vickie for an information pack. Wilsic Road Day Nursery, 11 Wilsic Road, Tickhill, DN11 9JG DELIVERED FREE TO OVER 3200 HOMES | www.todaypublications.co.uk

Doncaster Museum runs courses, and one I attend regularly is the monthly life drawing. For me, as practicing scales is for a musician. It hones ones craft, sharpens the observation and makes demands on ones drawing skills as no other situation can. The artist and the model are in a contract with each other until the end of the session, and it results in effort and concentration for the whole of that period of time that can be exhausting, but very rewarding. What one learns can be applied to every aspect of arts practice including abstract work, it’s about developing a personal visual language, composition and spacial awareness. So I really value the sessions because there is available good tuition which is a real rarity, and it is pitched to suit the complete beginner or the experienced artist. Each session is a challenge and as such becomes a reward. 2014 Sessions: 25 January, 22 February, 8 March and 12 April from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm £7.50 / £5 concession. 01302 734293, museum@doncaster.gov.uk

‘Off with their Head’ Visit to Gainsborough Old Hall

In November Class 4 visited Gainsborough Old Hall for a Tudor adventure. Dressed for the occasion as lords, ladies, servants, and even as Henry V111 himself the pupils took a journey back in time. The Old Hall dates back to 1460 and was originally built by the Burgh family as a home, but also to demonstrate their wealth and importance. It was so impressive that it was visited by many wealthy people, even royals. In 1541 Henry VIII and his young wife, Katherine Howard stayed at the Old Hall as a break in their journey from Lincoln to York. The Burgh family spared no expense in entertaining their royal visitors and threw a lavish banquet in honour of their guests. Dressed for the part Class 4 re-enacted the Tudor banquet that would have taken place. They thoroughly enjoyed playing jesters and juggling to entertain his majesty and there was Tudor dancing to add to the entertainment, and of course the feasting. A good time was had by all! But all too soon it was time to return to the 21st century. Our children really enjoyed their visit and would highly recommend it to others – a local attraction well worth visiting. T 32 32

Firstever everSt StMary’s Mary’s First ChristingleService Service Christingle On Friday December 6th Alderson, the Year 2 class at St Mary’s School led the first ever Christingle Service for the School. On Thursday morning every child in school made their own Christingle in preparation for the service on Friday. A Christingle is a symbolic object, related to the pomander, used in the advent services of many Christian denominations. The Christingle has its origins in the Moravian Church, but the representation of the four seasons was a later addition. At Christmas in 1747 in Germany, Bishop Johannes de Watteville thought about how he could explain the love of Jesus and what Christmas really means to the children in the church. He decided to make a simple symbol to express the message of Christmas in a fresh and lively way. He gave each child a lighted candle wrapped in a red ribbon, with a prayer that said “Lord Jesus, kindle a flame in these dear children’s hearts”.

Church of England, where the custom spread quickly. Christingle services are usually celebrated sometime around Christmas during Advent. St Mary’s Church holds a Christingle service every year but this is the first time the school had their own. There were readings and prayers from the Year 2 as they explained the meaning of the Christingle as well as a performance by the newly formed St Mary’s school choir. St Mary’s school Christingle Service WILL become an annual event. Maybe next year you can join the school or church as they celebrate Christingle. T

In wasn’t until 1968, that John Pensom of The Children’s Society introduced Christingle services to the 34 34

What a year we have had!

We converted to an Academy in the Co-operative group on 1 February 2013 which has given the freedom to move forward in a way that best suits our students’ needs. Our students had great successes in many competitions including Magistrates competition, Rotary Youth Speaks, Young Musician & Young Chef, Around the World in 80 Words, Mother Tongue Poetry, Intermediate Maths Challenge, Young Enterprise, Spelling Bee and there were many sporting achievements both in and out of college. Our Duke of Edinburgh pioneers gained Gold, Silver and Bronze levels, while College records were broken during Sports Day 2013. We buried a time capsule, supported the RSPCA, MacMillan Cancer Trust, Children In Need & Red Nose Day and enjoyed fun trips to the Houses of Parliament, Nature Reserves, Mining and Art museums, The Clothes Show, Lindholme Prison, Pontefract Castle, Mosques, Cadburys World, Doncaster Minister, Drayton Manor, Alton Towers, the Harry Potter studios and many more. Students also travelled to Kingswood, Berlin, France, Italy and New York, enjoying new experiences. We were granted Artsmark Gold for the third time in succession, and our classes of 2013 graduated and celebrated in fine style with the Yr 13 Prom at the Regent Hotel and the Yr 11 Prom at Castle Park. The Golden Oldies Tea Parties were great fun and our production of ‘We Will Rock You’ was legendary. Boy band Reconnected wowed Yrs 8 & 9 students with a mini concert. We celebrated in August with fantastic results – our A level students achieved a 10% rise in top grades of A & B and an increase of 15% in the percentage achieving 3 or more A levels. Our GCSE results saw an amazing improvement of 16% in 5 A* - C grades including English and Maths. In September we welcomed our new Year 7’s and introduced new ways of teaching and learning – Kagan Structures – to help all students make better progress, enjoy and become more actively engaged in their own learning. We also welcomed our new 6th formers who are proudly wearing the uniform they asked us to introduce. We look forward to more successes in 2014 – and in January will celebrate the 5th anniversary of our new College building. With best wishes for the New

Year from all at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College.

Alpines and Bulbs from Mountain to Market Our December speaker, Robert Potterton, of Potterton’s Nursery, Caistor, Lincs. Was a member of an expedition to mountain areas of China twenty years ago searching for new species and varieties of plants and bulbs some of which took a number of years to identify. When Robert explained that it takes eight years from planting a trillium seed to finding out the colour of its flower we began to realise the effort required for a nursery to produce a plant that we could expect to flower this year or next and why such plants are expensive. We all enjoyed a very interesting evening and Robert was pleased to sell all of his plants and the bulk of his miniature bulbs. The Country Market mince pies were pretty good too! Many thanks to everyone who donated a prize for the raffle. Our January meeting is of course the AGM on Thursday 30th starting at 7.15pm. in the Methodist Church Schoolroom. The evening will include a 38 38

Tickhill & District Lions Club

May I start by wishing you all a Happy New Year and saying a big thank you to everyone who supported our Grand Christmas Draw which was held on 10th December. To the companies who donated prizes, the many people who provided items for the draw, the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell the tickets and of course to all of you who purchased the tickets – thank you. If you were one of the many lucky winners then we have probably already been in touch but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale.

During December we escorted Santa on his new sleigh round most of the roads within the Tickhill and District area giving out hundreds of Christmas cards and receiving many cards and wish lists. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations. At Tickhill and District Lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs so you can be sure that every penny you donate will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year. So, thank you once again from Tickhill and District Lions and from all the people that your donations will help. T

community First of all I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year for 2014! Christmas has come and gone (once you read this) and we are all planning for a fresh new start, ready to improve either our minds or our bodies - or both, depending on your personal level of over-indulgence!! Our regular classes and events will be continuing from the second week of January with the Nellie Stages School of Dance, WI and the Francophiles. Slimming World continues with a session 52 weeks of the year - so no Christmas Break

Tickhill Parish Room for them. Our regular Saturday coffee mornings also continue for about 50 weeks of the year, depending on when Christmas Day falls! Obviously as the year moves on there will be many more interesting ‘bookings’, so make sure you don’t miss out.

Musical delight at Society’s November concert

There are some things that naturally go together: eggs and bacon, strawberries and cream, bread and butter, mince pies and Christmas. In the musical world a favourite instrumental pairing is flute and harp and it was this combination that delighted the audience at Tickhill Music Society’s November concert.

work on the programme was the Sonata in E flat major by one of the Bach family (which one being in dispute). Its soulful slow movement was followed by a jolly Bach Finale. The water nymph ’Naiades’ by William Alwyn was suitably liquid and languorous. After the interval there was a French emphasis with a habanera from Ravel and a ’Fantasie’ by Saint-Saens. The final work traced the history of the Tango over the years from 1900 to 1986 to round off a varied and enjoyable evening.

The concert harp is a noble instrument which can delight the ear when expertly played as it was by Elen Hydref, her fingers and feet totally in command. The more modestly sized flute in the hands of Joshua Batty was played fluently and with consummate skill to exploit the full range of the instrument. Blending together the duo produced some very satisfying music making. Their programme ranged widely, from the opening in Ireland to the final tangos from the warm south. A staple item for the solo flute is ‘Syrinx’ by Debussy, on this occasion given a sensitive rendering. A major

Garden View

A Shady Space

Light levels during January are low and the days are short, but now the winter solstice has passed, days are slowly lengthening. There are however, areas of the garden which never receive much sunlight, and these shady spaces are often the conversation starter when I speak to gardeners. A south facing garden is on the priority list of most house hunters, but in reality there must be around the same number of houses built on the dark side of the road! If you’re lucky enough to have a front and back garden, then you should have somewhere to grow the sun lovers, but it’s often a rear shady garden which causes most frustration. So what’s my answer? Embrace the shade! Shady spaces can be much more atmospheric than those open to full sun, they have a great earthy smell and can support a diverse range of plants and mosses. My suggestion is to layer the planting, so that it looks like the creation of shade is intentional. I would probably go as far as to erect a structure, such as a pergola or shade sail over the top, creating a cosy outdoor room, and use lighting to visually warm the space at night. 44 44

TICKHILL TODAY

Your layering process begins with the boundaries. The first stage is to paint them black, and before you scream ‘BLACK?!’ out loud, hear me out. Painting the boundaries black will help them to fade into the background once plants mature. The second stage is to clothe the fences and walls with climbers. Although hated by some, Ivy is perfect for this, but other things to try are shade-tolerant Honeysuckles or wall shrubs such as Hydrangea petiolaris and Garrya elliptica. For additional flower colour, why not cram in a couple of Clematis? Introduce height with a small tree such as Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ or the evergreen Trachycarpus fortunei. Clump forming bamboo makes a great vertical accent, as does the banana Musa basjoo. Next in our ‘shade lasagne’ are the shrubs such as the purple leaved Acers, Viburnum tinus, Box (which can be clipped into shapes to add formality) and Sarcococca. Smaller perennials such as Astilbe, Aconitum and Hellebores provide colour and finally ferns such as the evergreen Asplenium scholopendrium supply wonderful glossy ground cover. So there you have it, a shady oasis, and as with most things in life, if

you fully embrace it, a north facing shady garden can be magical. T

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Reducing Crime & Anti-Social Behaviour in your Area Crime levels in South Yorkshire are at their lowest for over 20 years. Therefore, the chances of you being a victim remain low. This is good news! However, we need your help to maintain this. A review of crime in South Yorkshire has highlighted that a third of house burglaries and theft from motor vehicles involve an insecure door or window. By taking the simple steps of ensuring you lock your doors, shut your windows and remove all items from vehicles you can reduce the chance of being a victim. Please help us to help you and keep South Yorkshire a safe place to live and work. The Local Shops Versus The Supermarket: Discuss I, like many of you living in this area, am an incomer. I have lived and worked here for over 20 years and my ‘children’ (now adults) consider themselves locals.

There are many parallels between the towns of Bawtry, Tickhill and Bircotes and the village I grew up in, for one - there were local shops aplenty. This is no longer the case with Woodbury, which is south of Exeter, and now a small town. The heart of the village, which was grazing, is now completely built on and every large garden has been in-filled, there might be a couple of working farms left, but they are no longer in the village centre, the population must have doubled, the doctors surgery expanded, (sound familiar?) but the shops have gone, as have the garage where Mr Miles made Morgan cars and the cabinet maker who made bespoke kitchens, along with the butcher and two grocers, their properties are all houses, there is a junk shop and a post office with skeleton food supplies, and the hardware store which is just hanging on because business values have slumped so much that they cannot sell it and retire. Everyone shops at the supermarkets in Exmouth which is a car journey away, or the nicer shops in Topsham which has managed to hold off the invasion of a superstore on its outskirts. I really value the family run local businesses in this area. Visitors can’t believe what we have, butchers, wet fish shops, veg shops, hardware and opticians, third generation grocers, florists, hairdressers and so on – you know what we have. They are all in business because of good quality, value, good service and local support. 54 54

TICKHILL TODAY

I am moved to raise the flag and urge more support for our local shop keepers after an article in the Times (Saturday November 2013 News Section) headlined ‘Family shuns supermarkets for year and pockets £900’ basically the Pugh family, from Oxfordshire, decided to do their food shopping in their local shops and market and have reckoned that they are healthier, (lost weight) wealthier and eating better for it. They confounded their expectations by making a saving of £900, by avoiding the clever tempting special-offer marketing techniques of the big supermarkets and simply buying what they needed, buying ingredients and cooking from scratch. They also enjoyed the relationships that were built up with the local suppliers. Some things were dearer, but overall the savings made, more than made up for it. They cut their bill from a weekly £80 - £100 to just £34, and they are putting their savings into a jaunt to a foodie destination! I know there are some things that just cannot be supplied by the local shops - but it’s not a very long list – and we all have to use the bigger shops from time to time, but in my experience I have found that if you ask for an obscure cut of meat, a particular kind of fish, some specialist foodstuff that isn’t on the shelf then it will be supplied, saving time and fuel on a journey into town. Try doing that in one of the BigFour! And the real saving in all of this is the community. Money spent in Tesco, Asda and the other Big Guys disappears into the shareholders pockets (and with Asda these pockets are in the USA as it is owned by a subsidiary of WalMart) – whereas

money spent with the local guys is returned into the community and goes round and round… if you google this phenomenon there are countless economists arguing the maths, the statistics are compelling, one suggests that if you spend £10 in a local shop that sells stuff from local producers the amount of money that goes back into your local economy can be over £50 - it works like this: when you buy a locally-made cake from a local shop, a big part of your money is passed on to the local baker. The shop employs local staff, a local accountant, an electrician etc who spend some of their money at the local garage, the garage owner, who employs local staff buys sausages from the butcher and round and round it goes…. With each step, around 80% of each spend goes into the local economy. You will maintain what we have here which is so special and particular, keeping this a great place to live, maintaining property prices and keeping the area vibrant and busy, Butchers aren’t just for Christmas!

Neighbourhood Plan The Neighbourhood Plan is now in the latter stages of its journey. During January its statutory time on Doncaster Council’s website will be completed, any necessary changes made and the NP and its associated documents submitted to an external inspector. Hopefully he or she will recommend it for approval by Tickhill’s electors. In the meantime, this column will give headline summaries of some of the content of the Plan. Countryside. Outside the built-up area of the town, the whole parish is in the Green Belt. Consultation indicated strong support for keeping the Green Belt intact and the Plan states this clearly. However, there are many legitimate activities and uses within a Green Belt and the Plan addresses them. Amongst them it seeks to promote: • Support for local farming businesses and the sale of their produce locally • Maintenance and improvement of routes for walking, cycling and horse-riding • Development and designation of sites of local nature interest (which used to be called local Sites of Scientific Interest or SSI) • Encouragement to diversity of wildlife through such means as improved management of highway verges, stream and river banks and field margins. In particular an effort will be made to establish wildlife corridors. • Designation of ‘quiet lanes’, suitable minor roads where walkers, cyclists and horse56 56

TICKHILL TODAY

riders share the road with motor vehicles in a civilised fashion. • Support and encouragement for tree-planting • Support opportunities for outdoor recreation, provided that any necessary structures blend into the surrounding landscape and are properly screened. This should give you a flavour of what the Plan aims to promote.

Tickhill Grand Prix 2014 Yorkshire will be at the centre of world cycling next summer as the Tour de France passes through on 5th and 6th July. The world’s biggest bike race will see professional riders race over local roads, taking on the best that the Dales and the Peaks have to offer. The action continues into August as Tickhill Velo once again promote the Tickhill Grand Prix. The race was a huge success in 2013, the weather was fantastic, hundreds of people came out to watch, creating an electric atmosphere that carried the riders round the Sunderland Street circuit. The racing was fast and furious and was well received by

Planning is well underway and we hope to engage fully with the local community, the Parish council and DMBC to put on a great show. . . . but not TODAY

At our November meeting Jean Townsend spoke about “The Real Queen Mother”. Jean gave a well balanced and well researched talk about a lady who was born an aristocrat, became Duchess of York reluctantly, but later when she became Queen following the 1936 abdication crisis proved to be the power behind the throne. Her lavish lifestyle meant that on her death, our present Queen had to pay her mother’s debts of £6.5M from her own purse – the Queen Mother would probably have thought this a small price for saving the Monarchy! Thank you 60 60

Jean for a most interesting talk. Behind the scenes our archivists remain busy. We are grateful to, among others, Neil and Marianne Croll and Judy Smith who have made significant donations to the Society archives recently. The full list of the Society’s archive material is available online at the Society website at tickhillhistorysociety.org.uk Click on the “Archives” tab on the homepage and then on the “Main collection” or “Recent additions” headings in the left hand column. If you want to view or comment on any of the material click on the link on the “Archives” page to send an email to the Society. Those who do not have internet access are not excluded; see Lesley Nicholson in the Library.

community Happy New Year to all. December saw the first presentation of the Young Person of the Year award and the Community Service Award. For more details see the next page. Also there was a lifelong service award made to Philip Mottram for his contribution to the Community. Philip now holds the title of Freeman of Tickhill and he will be able to drive his sheep down Sunderland Street at 5am on a Sunday morning! The Best Dressed Window Award went to Castlegate D.I.Y Highly Commended awarded to Carlson and Davies and Forget –Me- Not Commended awarded to Lockwoods, Tidy Hair and Small World Travel. Well done to all. There was no expense to the Community for any of these awards. We had a very successful Halloween Party which was funded by D.M.B.C. and we are having a Christmas party on the strength of the success to be funded by Tickhill Town Council and D.M.B.C. will provide the Disco equipment and some staff. I attended a meeting recently with the police and the message was if you see a crime or antisocial behaviour please report it by telephoning 101. You can remain anonymous. Unless we appear on the statistics we cannot be helped by extra policing so please do your best. I have also agreed to be a go between for the Neighbourhood Watch and the Community to enable me to disseminate up to date e mails about crime in the area. If you would like to be included on this alert list please e mail me, and I will add you to my contacts. If I can help stop one crime then it will be worthwhile. This year, 2014, the Council hope to stage a “Fun Day” for families and I will endeavour to keep you up to date with the latest details by email if you are on my community list, by this page and the notice boards. I have recently been informed that there are to be 1200 jobs lost in D.M.B.C. What effect it will have on services I do not know but we can only 62 62

Tickhill Town Council - JANUARY 2014 hope our volunteer community litter picker and snow wardens continue to do their invaluable work. As always I struggle to keep the spending of the Council within budget and with ever increasing prices for our services it has become difficult. Lack of income from Football games has been our down fall this year with the recreation ground being out of action for such a long time. I do hope we do not lose the booking and that the works carried out will be of benefit. I am trying to gather enough savings to enable the council to replace the floor in the hall and new doors etc would be nice! The changing rooms could do with a makeover too. Most fittings are 20years old and need replacing. Please if you wish to use the facility of the Pavilion contact either of the caretakers via their mobile or if necessary phone me or drop me an e mail and I will help. T

community December saw the first presentation of the Young Person of the Year award and the Community Service Award. These were presented at the Mayor’s Reception.

The winners of the Young Person of the Year Award were Oliver Samuel and Matthew Hall both from St Mary’s school, and the winners of the Community Service Award were Daisy and Amy Ellison from Estfeld

School. All four received a token for £10.00 to be spent at W.H. Smith. Certificates of achievement were also received. The trophies are to be held in each of the respective schools. T

Community Service Award

The winners of this year’s community Service Award were Daisy and Amy Ellison.

In November 2011 the Ellison family lost a very close family friend, Rob Taylor of Tickhill, to cancer. Whilst Rob was still in treatment at Weston Park Hospital, Daisy decided all by herself that she wanted to do something for him. She chose to do a sponsored walk around Tickhill and carefully mapped out a route that was around 3 miles long. Daisy enlisted the support of her younger sister Amy and following the walk Daisy and Amy presented a cheque for £750 to Weston Park

Hospital. Sadly, Rob lost his battle with cancer a few weeks later. Towards the end of his life Rob was cared for by the team at St. John’s Hospice in Balby, who treated him with dignity and respect, and were a source of support for the family. In 2012, as the anniversary of his death approached both Daisy and Amy again decided that they would like to mark the occasion by raising funds for another worthy cause. This time Daisy and Amy organised a sponsored walk from Tickhill to Stainon and back – a distance of 6.5 miles. They were joined by friends and family and

together they raised £500. They donated this money to St. John’s Hospice in recognition of their work, not only with Rob, but also with the many people and families that they help each year.

Well done Daisy & Amy. T

Young Person of the Year 2013

This year the Young Person of the Year award was awarded jointly to two friends Oliver Samuels and Matty Hall.

Oliver Samuel is a Year 6 pupil at St Marys. He had meningitis when he was a baby which left him with complications. He has had to have several operations to reconstruct his legs and he will need further treatment until he is eighteen Oliver doesn’t let this stop him doing anything! He joins in every activity and always does his best. Since February he has spent most of the time in a wheelchair with frames and casts on his legs. Despite these difficulties, Oliver joins in with everything. He accompanied his class on a residential to Whitby where he still managed to climb over rocks and beach comb. Oliver never complains but just gets on

with things. He has many friends who all want to be with him because of his fun and friendly nature. Matthew Hall, another Year 6 pupil, is one of Oliver’s best friends and he goes out of his way to help Oliver. He visits Oliver when he cannot get into school and they enjoy playing together like other children. In school, Matthew sees things that Oliver needs doing and just gets on with caring for him without either undermining him or taking away his independence. On the above mentioned residential, Matty pushed Oliver for miles in his wheelchair including up hills and along sandy beaches.

Congratulations to Oliver and Matty. T TICKHILL TODAY 63 63

Help us create a Historical Archive Wadworth visit to the Thackery Museum In the afternoon at the Thackray Museum a guide came into our room to talk about what it would be like to work and live in Leeds in 1842. The guide told us about the rats that would be in the workhouse. When she showed us a model of a rat it was massive, bigger that my hand. The guide then gave us some information of people who lived in Leeds to look at. My group was a slaughter house boy called John Odey. We found out details about him. He is a 17 year old gambler who liked to drink. He has no parents as his mum died during childbirth and his dad is in a mental institution. We then went onto the streets. The first thing I noticed was the smell, it was horrid. It was a mixture of the local smells like beer, meat, wee, poo. It was also very dark. We saw a woman who was cooking dinner, she had the flu, you could hear her coughing. A baby was in the corner of the room. Next we saw John Odey cutting food with bare hands. They were filthy and he was covered in blood. As we walk further into the streets it started to get smellier. There was a 68 68

man cleaning the poo and wee from the outside toilets, it was disgusting. A little girl, Hannah Dyson, being carried to the hospital. Hannah had got her leg trapped in a machine at the factory where she worked. Her leg was in a bad way and I think she would have had to have it amputated.

A large diary has been placed in Tickhill Library. This diary is to be used to record all meetings and events in Tickhill through 2014. We very much hope that all groups and organisations will endeavour to get their meetings and events into the diary, and that after the event, additional details will be added such as how many people attended, feedback on the speaker, or amounts raised if it is a fundraising event.

This document will not only be useful to anyone wanting to find out when a group meets, but will also form a Historical archive of a year in the life of the Tickhill Community. We really do urge all groups We ended up at an area where all to use the diary and provide as the people who ‘supposedly’ could much information as they can. cure diseases, chemist, doctors, quack, Thank you very much to Lesley family and friends. We were told by the guide what diseases our character and the team at the Library for agreeing to hold the diary and had got. John Odey had small pox. facilitate the availability of it. We had 2 shillings to cure him. We John Mardsen T went straight to the chemists. The cure was exactly 2 shillings. Doctors were too expensive. We decided to go with the chemist. We went to see if John Odey survived. He did survive small pox but then he died 26 years later of a heart disorder.

The visit made me realise that life in Victorian times was very hard. They had to work hard, had very little money and death was very common. I am glad I live in the 21st century. Charlie Scott Year 6 Wadworth Primary School. T
