et lcomFEBRUARY Wethe 2014 edition
I hope that everyone has had a great start to 2014. For me, Christmas already seems an awful long time ago. But then as I was working on the Christmas magazine back in October and November, and by the time you receive this issue I will be working on Mother’s Day and Easter! There does appear to be a lot to look forward to in 2014 as I keep hearing about events across the area that I will endeavour to bring you more details of over the coming months. If you are in contact with the organisers of any of these events then do ask them to get in touch so that we can ensure they get some promotion. There are now 5 magazines that make up the ‘Today Publications’ selection. Tickhill Today will be celebrating its 9th birthday next month and Rossington Today its 8th birthday. Bawtry Today will be 7 this summer and Harworth and Bircotes Today is nearly 3! So before Christmas we launched Bessacarr & Cantley Today which over the course of 2 months reaches 9000 homes. If anyone knows of anyone who might find this magazine (or any of the Today Publications) useful – whether they be a business owner or involved with a local group, school or charity then please do encourage them to get in touch. The March issues will be delivered to you late February. If you would like to have something included in this, then please make sure details are with me by Friday 7th February. Apologies if this sounds very early – but it is the 2nd Friday as normal – but the dates of many months this year seem to make this date fall very early in the month!
Enjoy February and I will back in a months’ time with your March magazine! T
Best wishes, Paula x

Tickhill Brownies thank Taylors for making a difference Tickhill Brownies are very grateful to ‘Making a Difference’ for their donation of £250 towards our trip to Disney in February to celebrate the Big Brownie Birthday. We are very fortunate to live in a village with such a strong community spirit and we thank the customers of Taylors and Taylors themselves for helping us with our application for this money. We will be travelling to Paris on Monday, 24th February very early in the morning and returning
on Wednesday, 26th very late, travelling by train to London and Eurostar to Disney, and cramming as much enjoyment in between as we possibly can. There will be 12 Brownies making the trip and they are all very excited as some have never been to Disneyland before, or even on a train! So, a big THANK YOU to Taylors and to MAKING A DIFFERENCE, for helping to make our trip possible. Taylor’s wish to thank their customers for supporting local shops and making a difference to local good causes. To date, £3,200 has been donated to
Tickhill Horticultural Society AGM With a little luck you may read this report before the AGM on Thursday 30th January (7.15pm) so I will remind you that orders for the pie and pea supper should be placed with Gillian Hill on 743317. Thank you On the evening of Sunday 8th December three young men knocked on my door to let me know that they thought they could hear gas escaping from a pipe on my outside wall. They stayed with me while I tried to contact neighbours and to sort out what needed to be done to get a gas-man. But for their thoughtfulness there could have been a major disaster if someone had walked up Tithes Lane smoking a cigarette. I did not recognise the young men and I am now sorry that I did not ask for their names. I just want to thank them most sincerely for being so sensible and helpful and I hope that one of them reads this letter. Yours Heather Davies Tithes Lane, Tickhill T

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill & Colliery Surgery (Aiming to help you to be in control of your health & healthcare) Some interesting statistics This medical practice has roughly 9200 patients of which two thirds are registered at Tickhill and one third at The Colliery Practice. In 2013 about 1885 appointments were booked but NOT ATTENDED. Not surprisingly the number not attended at each site reflects the number of patients on role. The number of booked but not attended appointments for each month, averages about 100 for Tickhill and 50 for The Colliery. Divide that by the number of working days in a month, of 22, and it is hardly surprising that we cannot always get an appointment at a time convenient to us. If we really need an appointment The Practice will always try to fit us in – although this may, at 6 6

times, mean a short wait whilst other urgent patients are seen. ‘A short wait!’ I hear you cry – well compared to some waiting times in A and E, it really is a short wait. Talking of ‘A and E’, the average number of trips to A and E per month, by patients in this Practice is 200. All these are reviewed and of these an average of 27 are rated as cases which are more suitable for a visit to a GP. Multiply this by the number of practices across the district and we start to see the size of the problem faced by A and E departments. We will hear more on this issue, in The National Press over the next weeks. Our February meeting on Tuesday 11th in St. Luke’s Chapel will be led by Hazel Horrigan and is entitled “the Tale of the Fitzwilliam Tomb”. This has finally been moved to its resting place in St Helen’s Chapel after many adventures. This will be a really interesting occasion and all visitors are very welcome. In the January article I mentioned that items for our Women’s Refuges are urgently needed. Items such as toiletries, tinned goods, disposable nappies, clothing and single bedding etc. can be brought to Church on Sunday 2nd February and they will be taken to where they are really needed. Here is an early mention of the MU Lady Day Service at 10am at Rotherham Minster. Our new Chaplain Canon Gordon Taylor, well known to us in Tickhill, will be installed at this service. Kathie Mason. Lifewise centre, Hellaby A brand new film-set style learning facility in Hellaby opened its doors for the first time on September 20th 2011 and to date over 81,000 people have visited the centre. Lifewise is a life-size film set of a small town, which is used to deliver safety messages to the public. It has been built in a unique partnership between South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, South Yorkshire Police, South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership, and the NHS The Lifewise partnership works together with an aim of keeping vulnerable people safe. Events have varied immensely since opening and the partnership has delivered programmes to members of the local community, including those with special needs, learning difficulties, and mobility problems. Crucial Crew is the centre’s ‘flagship’ educational programme, offered to all Year 6 school children in South Yorkshire where the visiting children learn vital life skills, including fire, road, first aid and personal safety tips. Approximately 96% of all year 6 children in South Yorkshire visit the centre each year. Hundreds of older people visit the centre every year as part of the ‘Get Lifewise’ initiative, this free event aims to equip the county’s older citizens with the key safety information they need to stay safe in later life. Topics covered include fire safety, first aid, fraud, distraction burglary and rogue traders. The next of these days will take place on Monday 10th March. The new centre’s larger size means it will now become home to members of the South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue (SYFR) and South 8 8

Rossington history group For the past nine months Rossington History Group, led by two new members, has been researching possible sites of archaeological interest around the village. Working with Doncaster Museum and the South Yorkshire Archaeological Service the group have identified a number of sites that more than likely pre date the establishment of the Roman settlement in Doncaster. As the information that had come to light was so exciting the History Group decided to form a specialist sub group that would be able to concentrate its eorts in this particular part of history of Rossington and the surrounding area. This sub group, The Rossington Archaeological Field Team (R.A.F.T.), decided to prepare an application bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund organisation and the structure of the bid has developed in a way that will eventually involve the wider community, voluntary groups, schools and individuals in what is likely to be a three year project. These are just a few of the items already found around the Rossington area and are now on display in Doncaster Museum. R.A.F.T has evidence that there is

Surplus Food: One Solution Last month I wrote about the economic good sense of shopping locally rather than in supermarkets, this article looks at food waste.
It’s not a secret that there have been food mountains for years, milk and wine mountains were the talk of my childhood. Producers and retailers have to come up with cunning ways to use up the stuff and get it into our store cupboards. Back in the 1960s we hardly knew about yogurt and now in any supermarket there is a plethora of milk based puddings to choose from in the chiller and you find milk and whey in virtually every item of the supermarket shelves. I can’t help thinking, after catering for a load of guests over the Christmas period, what an impossible task it must be second guessing the quantities of which individual foodstuffs will be needed to be grown and marketed by the whole of the UK. Hannah Stoddart from Oxfam’s GROW campaign, speaking on Radio 4s Shared Planet ( 31.12.2013) stated that there is enough food production in the world to feed everyone. But the statistics are harsh, many go hungry whilst many throw away what they cannot eat. There are lots of figures washing around, but this is a shocking one: Up to 50% of all food produced never reaches a human stomach. The causes are many fold some of which are poor infrastructure, poor forecasting by the supermarkets, damaged packaging, inadequate storage facilities and overstocking, the demand for super-market perfect fruit and veg: (30% of vegetable crops grown in the UK are never harvested because of these standards) silly sell-by dates, silly use-by dates and all those BOGOF’s that mean we 18 18

over buy and chuck. Up to half the food bought in the USA and Europe is thrown away by the consumer - it goes into landfill. This is such a shocking statistic that I can hardly believe it, I feel like sticking my hand up saying ‘well, it’s not me’ and I only hope that they are counting the potato peelings and pork chop bones. Issues around waste reduction with regard to Landfill are a whole other story. There are enormous issues around the use of chemical fertilizer, fungicide and insecticide order to increase production, GM foodstuffs, water use and land use. The supermarkets compound the problems by competitive profit focus rather than on a sustainable service to feed the population. And food poverty is not just a third world issue. It’s very real in this country with many working families living below the accepted poverty line – 6.7 million, according to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and coupled with this, obesity is a growing problem. In early December, in Goldthorpe the first pilot social supermarket opened. Community Shop, the company behind this, will provide chosen shoppers on the cusp of food poverty with access to surplus food at up to 70% discount on normal prices. The aim of this project is to match surplus food with social need. To be eligible one must be on welfare support in that area. Not only will they be able to access cheaper foods – which incidentally are not over the sell-by dates, but also on offer will be cookery skills, home budgeting, debt advice, CV writing etc.
Membership will be for a limited time only. The launch of this supermarket is supported by Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, M&S, Ocado and others. I can’t help wondering that some weeks there will only be tinned pears, baked beans and mincepies on the shelves, and that the cookery-skills-instructors will have a task akin to Ready-Steady-Cook on their hands. But of course I don’t know what all those warehouses of overstocked items really look like, and am sure that this shop will have a pretty well rounded stock of items. When the Goldthorpe shop has proved a success, (and how can it not?) Then many other shops will open including in London. The brains behind this idea should be applauded for their drive to make this happen, ending the misery of food poverty in the UK. It’s not a new idea, it has been tried and tested in Europe, but it is new here. Excess food will go where it is most needed rather than Landfill Statistics from Joseph Rowntree foundation, Oxfam and Institute of Mechanical Engineers

We wish you a Brassy Christmas Tickhill Music Society is used to performances by small groups. The Christmas concert was no exception, except that the two musicians played at least ten instruments (it was difficult to keep track of the exact number). The virtuosi in question were James Stretton and Iain Jackson, and while Iain confined himself most of the time to accompanying James on the keyboard (both his own electronic instrument and the Society’s grand piano), James displayed his versatility on multiple brass instruments, ranging from piccolo trumpet to bass tuba.

Parish rooms soup lunches James is a former member of the Black Dyke Mills Band and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, and this background was evident in his dexterity and also the sensitivity of his playing. The programme was equally wide-ranging, from Bach and Handel to arrangements of Christmas carols, and including two pieces specially composed for the duo. Iain revealed his pedigree as a former trombonist in the National Youth Orchestra by switching roles with James in “Santa Baby”, and another item, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” called for accompaniment on the tambourine by a member of the audience (who, it must be said, showed no reluctance). The musical fare may have been light-hearted but it was played with great accomplishment and was the perfect curtainraiser to the festive season. Adrian Hattrell T

Are you too old for love at 80 ? Can you fall in love at 80 or is it too late? What on earth will your family think? And are there too many memories and secrets to make it possible? Everton Village Players explore these questions in their latest production, a beautiful romantic comedy called “The Last Romance” by Tony Award Winning American playwright Joe DiPietro. On an ordinary day in a routine life, Ralph decides to take a different path on his daily walk, one that leads him to an unexpected second chance at love. Ralph a cheeky flirty chap meets the elegant and reserved Carol as they walk their dogs in the park. To Carol’s surprise, they fall in love, much to the dismay of Rose, Ralph’s bitter and jealous sister. This leads to some surprising and dramatic twists.
An interesting feature of the play is “young Ralph”, a wannabe opera singer with a beautiful voice. Operatic selections are used throughout the story, and they work wonderfully. This is a tale that mixes heartbreak with humour, and the central message about seizing life with a passion comes through loud and clear; a golden-years love story that casts a bewitching spell about the power of love at whatever age. Due to growing demand for their productions, The Everton Village Players are putting on an extra night with a discounted ticket. Please ask for information when you call to book your tickets. “The Last Romance” will be performed at Everton Village Hall from 18th – 22nd February at 7.30. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 01777 817275 or visit www.evertonvillageplayers. co.uk to book on line. T

Care for Cats Sue Clarke together with a small but dedicated group of volunteers takes in unwanted cats from across Nottinghamshire.”Our aim is to provide every cat in our care with as happy a rescue experience as possible and to give them the best start possible in their new homes” explained Sue.
To this end, Care for Cats do not house the cats in a rescue centre, but look after them in small numbers in foster homes. “We ask for a minimum donation of £50.00 for every cat or kitten we home, which is exceptional value for money ! Every kitten is thoroughly health checked, has been tested for Feline Aids and Leukaemia, has been treated for fleas and worms and is triple vaccinated, micro chipped and neutered. Obviously, there is often a massive shortfall between the donation given and the cost of treatment so fund raising is an essential part of our work”. The group is always looking out for suitable “forever” homes for their cats - homes where the high standard of care initially set by the rescue is continued. If you are interested in becoming one of those homes or would like to support the work of Care for Cats by providing good quality bric-a-brac, books etc please contact the following numbers. On Saturday 15th March there will be a Charity Auction at Everton Village Hall at 2pm. We are looking for items to auction so please let us know if you have anything. Garden View
By February Christmas can seem like a distant memory: toys and games which were desired for months beforehand, are now no longer new. I’m sure I’m not alone in remembering how the excitement of a new toy soon faded, but for me the big box in which it was wrapped provided entertainment for a much greater length of time because it could be turned into a car, a bus, a den or a robot. Recently I was asked to apply this theory when designing a family garden: a fun outdoor space, with no obvious pieces of play equipment such as a big blue climbing frame; a bright red slide, or a plastic swing. Instead fun is designed into the garden space much more subtly, the key being to introduce elements which children can ‘accidentally’ find, and which stimulate thought and exercise their creative minds. Children love pretending, and creative play can include play sand, water and of course mud (surely you must have made mud pies or sloppy dosh when you were a child – for those who didn’t its mud and water mixed in a bucket or bowl with a stick then left to harden in the sun). Elements such as a mud kitchen, logs to jump off and a tree to climb are all much more fun (and cheaper) than modern play equipment. I 36 36

A place to explore & create love to see a garden which on first inspection looks like an adult space, but has elements for initiating play. Stepping stones through a border; a self contained water feature; bark areas under trees for den making; grass mounds for climbing up and rolling back down; paths to race bikes on; washing line poles to climb, and a small bridge to cross when escaping from trolls…the usual thing! Parents also often ask about child-friendly plants, and it’s a tricky question to provide a quick answer for. There are basically two ways in which children could be adversely affected by garden plants: ingestion, or contact. The majority of ornamental plants, roots, seeds and berries range from slightly to very toxic, but statistically (research shows) that the number of deaths is tiny. The vast majority taste so disgusting that your child probably would spit most of it out, and if poisonous then vomiting would most likely occur because it is the body’s natural defence mechanism (apple pips must surely be the most commonly eaten poisonous seeds!). Foxgloves, fungi and Delphinium seeds are the most commonly known plant poisons, but others less well known include Daffodils, which are planted in most gardens and public places without a second thought. The leaves of Rhubarb, green parts on tomatoes and potatoes are all harmful,
but we still grow them in schools. I think garden education at a young age is the key, and given most under 3’s won’t be outside alone in the garden it shouldn’t be a problem … anyway, they’ll be too busy playing to eat the plants!. T
Until next time, happy gardening ,
Lee. .

It has been my privilege and pleasure to have lived in Tickhill now for forty five years. And this sort of talk can go on for hours. The speakers, between them, knew everybody, and what’s more, knew most of their private business, where they lived, how old they were, who all their relatives were and what happened to them. This is total recall and local oral history on a grand scale. It is a treat to overhear these exchanges which we incomers cannot hope to emulate. We can only stand on the sidelines and admire the performance.

In December we performed a show called A Midwife Crisis. To perform it took a lot of rehearsals. It was the key stage one performing it and the year 2 had the main role. Steve the donkey and the Midwife were the main characters. Steve the donkey and the Midwife had lots of lines to learn. Steve the donkey was performed by Boyen Chestnutt and the Midwife was performed by Alice Cockett. The star who sang the solo was performed by Christabelle Ng. The parents clapped and cheered. We hope they enjoyed it.

In December we did lots of rehearsals for our Christmas Production. Lots of people came to see it and they enjoyed it. We enjoyed doing it. Mary and Joseph had baby Jesus. It was really fun doing it. The angel Gabriel told the Midwife and Steve the donkey that the baby Jesus was wrapped in swaddling clothes laying in a stable. My favourite bit was when the Midwife was peddling the bike and Steve the donkey was standing on the bike. By Emma Rippon and Emily Whitlam (Year 2). T

After a very successful Christmas period we have received many pleasing comments about the super graphics on the new sleigh designed by P & N Corporate Media. We knew they were good and the public have confirmed it. Many thanks P & N and many thanks also to the Pentagon Barnsley subsidiary of Pentagon Vauxhall for the 4 x 4 vehicle which pulled Santa round for the fortnight before Christmas. The willing support of local businesses means a lot to us all.
With so many thousands of children and adults having turned out to enjoy seeing Santa, possibly chatting to
him or one of his helpers, we are sorry that one or two complaints have been received where we had missed houses or were too late for children who had already gone to bed. We can only say sorry. On some evenings we had a large area to cover and it would be impossible to be everywhere at the most suitable time for every child. With chocolate Easter Eggs already ordered we will have time during January and February to consider where we can provide financial support for worthy causes and projects which may aid the lives of others, especially in the local area. Christmas at Wadworth Over Christmas Wadworth PS organise 4 events: Carols Around the Tree, Christmas Fair, Key Stage 1 Nativity and all the Christmas Parties.
Happy New Year at
This year at Estfeld we have been thinking about the year ahead and how we can make a fresh start in 2014. The pupils have been thinking about what they can do to be “better learners” in the coming year. Here are some of the things that Class 5 came up with: “To never give up, even if it doesn’t go my way.” “To check my work before handing it in.” “To listen carefully to what the teacher is saying.” “To persevere with my work.” “To speak up more in class and get involved.” “To get to sleep quicker at night.” “To admit when I am wrong.” 42 42
TICKHILL TODAY
The last two are especially important. It is not always easy to admit when we are in the wrong, or even mistaken, but it is a sign of a maturity if we can. Also there is currently a great deal of research being done regarding the effect on children’s learning due to lack of sleep. The changes that we make do not need to be great ones – simple is often best – small achievable things that can be done consistently can make all of the difference. We hope that the readers of Tickhill Today may find some of our pupils’ insights thought provoking and inspire then to make a resolution of their own. And remember – a resolution isn’t just for New Year! Happy New Year from everybody at Estfeld. T
On 5th December Wadworth PS had their Christmas Fair. There were lots of exciting stalls, such as: Christmas Raffle, various cakes stalls, nail bar. 4 year 6 pupils had their own stalls and together they raised £116.00. A week or so later, they had their Christmas parties. A year 6 boy, Bailey Westerman quoted “I liked the party because I won the game and the food was brilliant”. With all thoughts merry, the children were informed that the left over sandwiches had been sent to the M25 group for the homeless. Key Stage 1 and Reception did nativities. Receptions was “The Snowman at Sunset” and Year 1 and Year 2 was “The Tale of the Little Donkey”. Maddison Wilson explained Tale of the Little Donkey was about the donkey that took Mary to Bethlehem and saw everything. Next we asked Miss Hodgkiss how the Reception play went and she said “the faces of the smiling parents told it all”. Finally on the last day of term was Carols Around the Tree. One pupil said “the atmosphere was just brilliant and I loved it”. This Christmas has been the best one ever and the festivities at Wadworth Primary School were brilliant. This year our “Golden Oldies” Christmas Party had a Christmas fete atmosphere with tombola & cake stalls as well as entertainment from our choir singing festive carols . Students raised money in their tutor groups so that each guest left with a lovely hyacinth plant. An impressive £539.41 was raised for the College’s chosen charity, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. An amazing effort from students & staff! Preparations are now under way for the Easter Tea Party in April! Congratulations to Charlotte Milnes, Olivia Curtis, Jack Ashwood, Mia Parkinson, Hollie Hubbard and Stuart Scott who have all been chosen by their Language Teachers as 'Student of the Term' Bravo!
Our Sixth Form students recently took part in a Science lesson delivered in a modern and exciting new way! A live video conference enabled them to take part in a session called “The Chemistry of Colour” with the University of Sheffield. An interactive whiteboard supported the lesson visually and students were able to ask the lecturer questions and receive feedback. More sessions are booked for later this year! Our College Choir gave an amazing performance at the Christmas Concert at St Johns Church, Edlington on 2nd December. They were accompanied by the Bramley Brass Band and sang their way through many well loved Christmas carols as well as modern songs. The College’s production this year is Gregory’s Girl – tickets now on sale from the College shop! Performances on 13th & 14th Feb

Neighbourhood Plan Join Us for The Neighbourhood Plan (NP) will still be on the Doncaster MBC website when this magazine reaches you, with a direct link from the Tickhill Town Council website, (www. tickhilltowncouncil.co.uk) so it is available for any further comments or suggestions from our readers. There is also a copy in the Library.
This month the theme is TRAFFIC. Transport issues formed a major part of the comments which were made to the team during the various consultation exercises. There are no easy answers and some of the requests contradict each other! However, there are certain clear and widely held requests, one for less through traffic and slower speeds through the town, a second for the maintenance of free parking but better organised to favour short-term parking for shopping, and a third for more safe places to cross the main roads. Any proposals which will follow the general principles expressed in the NP will require negotiation with the highway authorities. On through traffic the surveys conducted by the team demonstrated that the major flow is on the west-east route from the M18/A631 through Maltby and Tickhill to Bawtry/Lincolnshire. Now that work has begun on the link road from the M18 (Junction 3) to the A638 at Parrots’ Corner, we believe that this will provide a much better route for traffic which doesn’t want to stop and contribute to Tickhill’s economy. When the road opens (2015/16) we aim to persuade highway authorities to amend the signing for through traffic and also satnav operators to change their advice to drivers. The Stripe Road junction is regarded as dangerous; a serious accident there recently only reinforces the 44 44
TICKHILL TODAY
determination to persuade the authorities to make changes. Many additional crossing points were suggested. The NP does not specify any particular spot, but will promote discussion as to where they should be on the main roads and how they will help. The design of pedestrian refuges also needs to ensure that traffic does slow down and that they are wide enough for prams and mobility scooters. The speed of traffic along Northgate now can make it difficult to cross to the shops even with a pedestrian island. Other issues included in the NP are better provision for those with limited mobility (both in parking spaces and in raising kerbs at bus stops), improved local bus services, protection of grass verges and opportunities for cycling and cycle parking. All will require effective persuasion from the Town Council but the approval of the Neighbourhood Plan by the community will give much strength to our case for positive changes. T

Life-savers wanted in Prevent Tickhill & Rossington flooding Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust is appealing to community minded locals in Tickhill & Rossington to become life-saving Community First Responders. Recruits could are required to join existing schemes in the area’s which provide immediate medical care to members of the community in the vital minutes before an ambulance arrives. Community First Responders are trained in basic life-support, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and oxygen therapy. They are equipped with a kit which includes oxygen and an automated external defibrillator (AED) to help patients in a medical emergency such as a heart attack, collapse or breathing difficulties. Warren Bostock, Community Defibrillation Trainer at Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: “We know that in many medical emergencies the first few minutes are critical and if effective treatment can be performed within those minutes, lives can be saved and disability reduced.
“Being part of this initiative can be extremely rewarding and I would encourage anyone who may be interested in helping their local community to take on the role.” Over 50 Community First Responder schemes currently operate across South Yorkshire and volunteers should be prepared to offer at least 4 hours a week to be on call from home. Full training is given to successful applicants who must be over the age of 18, physically fit and hold a full driving licence (which they have held for at least 12 months with no more than 3 penalty points). Yorkshire Ambulance Service will also run Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service checks on candidates. Anyone interested in finding out more should contact the team at Yorkshire Ambulance Service. The Friends Of Tickhill Mill Dam would like to inform residents of Tickhill of the good news that the new Ultrasonic Level Detection System (ULDS), installed on the Mill Dam Sluice Gate, is working very well. The ULDS, provided by DMBC, has automatically opened the sluice gate eight times since its installation (early 2013) confirming that the ULDS level settings are correct thereby helping to prevent flooding in Tickhill. We hope this good news will restore some confidence in the residents who were so badly affected by the torrential rain in June 2007 when the Sluice Gate did not open.
It is vital the Mill Dam Sluice Gate and its control system continues to be regularly maintained on a monthly basis. The FOTMD will continue to talk with DMBC to try to ensure this essential servicing is carried out over the coming years despite the financial problems currently facing DMBC. To its credit DMBC has agreed that the FOTMD retain keys to the control box of the ULDS so that in the unlikely event of a power failure at the Mill Dam the Sluice Gate can still be opened manually. The FOTMD have been involved in the preparation of the Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan under the heading ‘Flooding and Drainage’. We will continue to help whenever and wherever possible on behalf of all the resident of Tickhill. Finally may we wish all Tickhill Today readers a Happy, Healthy and ‘Floodless’ 2014! T

. . . but not TODAY
As we have come to expect the upstairs function room at the Millstone was almost full for our annual social evening on December 12th. After a superb “pie, peas and puds” supper Professor David Hey, an eminent local historian, gave us an interesting yet light hearted and entertaining talk about “Tickhill – a Norman Town”. Anybody who thinks of history in terms of boring school lessons should think again, David has the art of mixing fact with humour in a way far removed from any history lesson that your scribe can remember. Thanks are due not only to David Hey for his 52 52

talk but to Dorothy Bradley who organised the event and to the Millstone staff who ensured it ran so smoothly.
Fast forward from Norman times to 1914.The Society has just published its 17th Occasional Paper entitled ‘Tickhill in the First World War’ by Carol Hill. Initially intended to be part of our new history book of Tickhill to be published in September, Carol found out so much more information than could be included in the book that a separate publication was justified. The Paper records how the local community responded to the call to arms, received refugees, coped with rationing and raised a great deal of money for the war effort. The Paper is on sale price £2 from KSM Card Gallery Castlegate and is a must-

LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY read story as we approach the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. Our next meeting will be on Thursday February 20th when Peter Young will give a talk entitled “That’s Your Lot – an Auctioneer’s Tales” Maybe not quite the Antiques Roadshow but should be very interesting nonetheless. As usual the meeting will be in the Methodist Schoolroom, Northgate at 7.30 pm, doors open at 7.00pm. Visitors will be welcome. T

community At this time of year our work is mainly centred on finance and budgets. Unfortunately as at the time of writing this I have not received confirmation from D.M.B.C. as to whether there will be local capping or levies on the Precept in the next financial year (2014-2015) and these remain very much in the laps of our D.M.B.C. officers. Our only source of income is from the Precept, a Parish Grant (Introduced last year) and income from the Pavilion. We have no contribution from Commercial rates. All their Council Tax goes to central government. It is with fingers crossed that we can still remain in a healthy position. In the next few days we will be holding a Budget meeting and it is my wish to the councillors to cap the letting rates of the Pavilion to £8.00 per hour for yet another year. We will be looking to costing for replacing the floor at the pavilion and also looking at replacing the crockery and almost none existent cutlery. This should make letting of the hall more attractive thus hopefully increasing our income. I hope those of you who attended our Children’s Halloween Party and Christmas Party enjoyed yourselves and I will be pushing for an Easter Party of some description . I shall also be pushing to continue with the diversionary activities this summer. Those of you who would like to help or contribute should contact me by either e mail or telephone. As you will all be aware we have a volunteer litter picker/ keep Tickhill Tidy man and this is proving to be most successful. Many residents have commented on the improvement to Tickhill and on behalf of everyone I wish to thank him for all his hard work. During our recent Christmas festivities we had many residents and local business people adding to the Christmas lights. I would 54 54

Tickhill Town Council - FEBRUARY 2014 kindly like to remind everyone that should you chose to emulate this activity for Christmas 2014 that you should first seek the relevant permission and licenses from D.M.B.C. However, Tickhill Town Council did feel that 2013 saw a magnificent display of lights in Tickhill, a very warm welcome to our small town. I have had many complaints about parking on pavements again and also a serious complaint about those of you who have gravelled your drive and fail to sweep the residue from the pavements. Please could we try to keep the pavements clear to be walked by pedestrians. On a final note I wish to mention the hard work which our Councillors have put in to the Community. Please remember they are not paid for this work and do what they do purely for the love of the Community. Please help them all you can. T
