the MARCH 2014 edition
“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” Dr Seuss In the month of his birthday I thought a Dr Seuss quote would be appropriate! World Book Day takes place on Friday 7th March – the date is linked to Dr Seuss’s birthday on 2nd March, and in the UK we use the closest Friday – I bet you didn’t know that! Over recent weeks I have been lucky enough to participate in 2 very different personal development courses – but both of them looking at mind set. Why we still do certain things even though we know they aren’t in our best interests and learning how to overcome barriers that stand in our way of making changes. The quote above was mentioned at one of the courses and touched a nerve with many in the room – particularly those with children. “But everyone else has one Mum” – sound familiar? Our society seems to be all about fitting in, conforming to norms, when in reality we are all individuals, and sometimes thinking outside the box and stepping away from the accepted norms and not accepting ‘but we have always done it this way’ can reap rewards. The April issues will be delivered to you late March. If you would like to have something included in this, then please make sure details are with me by Friday 14th March. Also prior warning, that due to badly timed Easter holidays the deadline for the May issues will be very early – Friday 4th April.
Enjoy March and I will back in a months’ time with your April magazine! T

First society concert for 2014 Tickhill Music Society’s first concert of 2014 was a piano recital given by John Paul Ekins. Notable features of the evening were the verbal introductions given by the artist - richly informative and illuminating. The evening began with a Mozart Fantasy (K475) played crisply and with assurance. There followed the Impromptu in A flat, Op.90 No. 4 - melodic but with overtones of Schubertian pathos. Next came the Holiday Diary, Op. 5, an early work by Benjamin Britten in three movements. This gave impressionistic accounts of a splashy early morning bathe, a serene trip on a sailing boat and finally a boisterous Fun Fair. After the interval there were three Intermezzi (Op.117) by Brahms, the first with a yearning melody, the second rather solemn and the third, slow, dark and march-like. The evening was rounded off in

fine style with a majestic account of Beethoven’s Sonata No. 21 (op.53) known as the Waldstein, the name of the Count to whom it is dedicated. This was a thoroughly satisfying evening of splendid music making delivered with sensitivity, technical accomplishment and panache. Mr Ekins has an engaging personality and mastery of his instrument, and his musicianship was much enjoyed by the audience who applauded with sincere enthusiasm. DC INTERIORS We have grown from your recommendations
community Well February has come with not only wet cold weather, but an onslaught of lovely puppies and stray dogs. We had a lovely little stray come to us one week and proudly produced 9 puppies the week after, mum and babies are doing well. I hate to think what could have happened to her and her babies had she not been with us.
Finding a forever home
A member of the public also found 2 puppies in a box which we are now taking care of. The people that came to our gates and let a cat out of the car, what did they imagine it would do? Knock on our door and ask to be taken in?! The poor thing is still living rough as we have been unable to catch it. This is unbelievable, would it have been so difficult to put it in a carrier and leave at our gates if they were so desperate. The stories are endless and we could fill the page with them, however we are here to pick up the pieces and give dogs and cats a chance to find that forever home. We are always looking for foster homes for elderly dogs to spend their last few years in comfort. Do you think you can help? Here at the Sanctuary we are having building work carried out so everything is a little chaotic we will be open as usual but apologies for any disruption. Don’t forget us when you are walking around the supermarket we are always desperate for washing up liquid, black bin liners and wash powder. Every little helps. Now some fundraising events that you may be interested in. 18 18

community Research shows that one in three mums struggles to find time to cook healthy meals for their family. Christine a healthy eating expert from Maltby says that losing weight and creating delicious, healthy meals doesn’t have to mean spending hours in the kitchen. And a new hardback recipe book from Slimming World shows just how quick eating well together as a family can be. Christine Cheetham, who runs a Slimming World group in Tickhill, says: “People lead extremely busy lives, juggling long working hours, families, friends, housework and other commitments, so every second counts when it comes to serving up food for the whole family. Cooking healthily doesn’t have to be a laborious task and Slimming World’s

Good news for Landlords on Section 21 Notices
In the recent case of Spencer v Taylor, the Court of Appeal gave a decision that will make it easier and quicker for Landlords to end an Assured Shorthold Tenancy by serving a Section 21 Notice. Previously it was accepted that: (i) A s. 21(1)(b) Notice should be served before or on the day the fixed term of the tenancy ended; and (ii)A s. 21(4)(a) Notice should be served after the fixed term has expired
However, in the above case, the Judge confirmed that a Section 21(1)(b) Notice, giving 2 calendar months notice, can be used before and after the fixed term has ended. This is good news for Landlords as Section 21(1)(b) Notices are much easier to draft than Section 21(4)(a) Notices. Indeed, many Landlords’ claims for possession have failed due to poorly drafted Section 21(4)(a) Notices. Furthermore, using a Section 21(1)(b) Notice will usually entitle a Landlord to recover possession more quickly than a Section 21(4)(a) Notice.

Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan This month’s theme is the TOWN CENTRE, where there has been close cooperation between the Neighbourhood Plan team and the Tickhill Business Association, as well as many comments from the public. Overall there is much appreciation of the variety of shops in the town and a wish to preserve this, alongside the twin concerns of the need for action to tackle traffic dangers and the desire to retain free parking. The NP designates a core shopping and business area as the town centre. After a survey of what we currently have, it became clear that direct retail frontages (User Class 1) occupy around 60% of the premises in the town centre, with the remainder divided between a wide variety of other activity, such as financial and professional services, restaurants, cafes and takeaways, and such facilities as the library. In order to preserve the vibrancy of the town centre, our proposed policy would keep the present proportions, holding the non-retail uses to a maximum of 40% of the frontages. At the same time, part of the diversity of uses includes residential accommodation and the NP supports this, including making use of empty space on upper floors as residences. The public consultation exercise showed concern that short-term parking spaces, both on street and in the Town Council’s car park, were being occupied by long-term stays. Proposals will be made, in cooperation with local businesses and the Highway Authority, to restrict parking close to the Market Place for shoppers 34 34
TICKHILL TODAY
and to find alternative spaces for employees to park their vehicles for the day. We are emphatic that parking remains free. On the safety front, while we have longer term ambitions to see through traffic reduced, there is an immediate need to control the speed of vehicles passing through the Market Place, especially from Northgate. Crossing the road outside the Post Office needs to be made easier and safer, while we would like to see a continuous pavement on the western side of the Market Place so that pedestrians have priority
over vehicles using the Spar car park. These are the sort of issues where we will negotiate with the Highway Authority (DMBC) when, hopefully, the Neighbourhood Plan passes its external examination and is adopted by our residents in the forthcoming referendum. You may also be interested in actions already taken by the Town Council in response to the consultation exercise: - posts removed from the car park to make parking easier, posts put into Castle Close to keep vehicles off the grass verge and improved control of litter in the town centre. The Annual General Meeting on 30th January proved to be another successful and very enjoyable evening.
Chairman Ray Hill is now seen in a new light after the jokes he told in his review of the year brought the house down. In between the anecdotes he thanked his committee, all members and friends and local businesses for their support. The 2013 accounts revealed a profit of £154.90 for the year and the annual subscription will remain at £7 – very good value for 10 speaker meetings with coffee and biscuits. Eric Brough, Speaker Finder, revealed a very wide range of subjects to be covered by our speakers for 2014. The Committee were all happy to continue and were re-elected en bloc. Volunteers to join the team will be most welcome. After a very tasty pie and pea supper we were all able to relax to the music of young Hannah Webb on the clarinet accompanied
by church organist and choir master John Marsden on the piano. To finish the evening off we all joined in a sing-along. Many thanks to Hannah and John. The second speaker meeting of the year will be held in the Methodist Schoolroom on Thursday 27th March starting at 7.15pm when our speaker will be Sarah Hopps from Thirsk. A regular contributor to Garden Answers magazine, the March edition quotes ‘Lecturer and garden holiday guide Sarah Hopps travels the UK and Europe to uncover the best gardens for you to visit’. She can be heard on Radio York and is a regular advisor on the Question and Answer team at a number of the big flower shows including the two in Harrogate. Sarah’s theme will be ‘A Sensory Garden’ and she will be bringing plants for sale. Visitors welcome. £3

No-one Likes a Soggy Bottom!
It’s a phrase normally associated with BBC2’s Great British Bake Off, but it’s not just cooks who go to great lengths to ensure their produce (pastry in this case) doesn’t end up with a soggy bottom, it affects gardeners too! I’m not talking about sitting on wet grass, or toppling over in the veg plot after too much potting-shed homebrew, but about the poor plants we expect to grow in badlydrained soil. Out in the wild, a plant’s survival depends on whether its seeds blow into a dry rock face or a sticky clay soil puddle, and that’s fine because one will die while the other thrives. But it’s very different in the domestic garden, where overenthusiastic humans buy anything that looks pretty, dig a hole and expect it to bloom. The right plant for the right soil is as important, if not more so than its tolerance to sun or shade. Studies show that plants cannot survive for more than just a few days if left in standing water. It’s a little known fact that roots need air too … well, most plants that is. You see there’s a clever lot who have adapted over the years to thrive in such conditions and they’re commonly known as bog plants. I understand it’s not the most glamorous name, unlike 36 36
TICKHILL TODAY
their closely-related cousins such as water lilies, which are known as hydrophytes. Plants that thrive in heavy, wet clay soils, which are damp but not permanently waterlogged, include the beautiful bold leaves of the Hosta, the feathery plumes and delectably dissected foliage of the Astilbe, and any of the Primulas, which are ideal for low-growing spring colour. For fern lovers, Osmunda regalis is a favourite or for a splash of summer colour in full sun try Lobelia cardinalis. If you have a larger garden and need to fill areas of damp soil, try the herbaceous Rodgersia which look great planted in drifts, and if you have a really large area why not try the prickly rhubarb-like Gunnera manicata: children will love standing under the giant leaves of its huge green umbrella! If you don’t have a boggy area, but would like to try growing some of these plants for yourself, why not create one? If you dig out a ‘mini pond’ and then add an old liner or plastic sheet, pierce it several times with a fork and then add the soil back in, you can plant a selection of the plants above. You’ll need to make sure it doesn’t dry out in
the summer, so a shady location usually works best, and if you’ve only got a teeny garden, try the fly-eating pitcher plants Sarracenia. They will provide a talking point. Until next month, enjoy your garden
Until next time, happy gardening ,

community We received a visit from a famous author – E.R Reilly. His books include “Mirror,Mirror”, “My Best Friend” and many more including his latest “The Real Boy Wizard”. He was able to give the children some top tips for story writing. The children from year 1 through to year 6 were fascinated to meet and listen to a real author. Many children took the opportunity to buy books which the author signed. He also gave the school copies of his books to add to our guided reading collection. Some of the year 4 children gave their reaction to his visit. “He was funny, he seemed he wanted to impress us with his books and encourage us to read.” “ He looked like a good author and and had written some really good books” Here’s a photo of him below signing the books. Jack and the Beanstalk The Pantomime On Thursday 16th of January 2014, the West Midlands Theatre Company performed the famous fairy tale, Jack and the Beanstalk as a pantomime at Wadworth Primary School. All of the children (and staff ) enjoyed this performance. In fact, the children said it was one of the best pantomimes they had ever seen. One teacher said “It was fabulous in every way possible.” This brilliant show was put on by THREE performers. Although you couldn’t tell by how fast they got changed into their different costumes. 42 42

A cold damp evening in January did not seem to deter our members from turning out to hear David Templeman talk about the final journey of Mary Queen of Scots in 1857. Almost 100 of us heard David, speaking completely without notes for over an hour, bring those final months of Mary’s life so vividly to life. Taking account of the adult sensibilities of the audience David only described Mary’s actual execution briefly – a part of the talk he is always asked to amplify by schoolchildren! Perhaps we were all like that once! Thank you David for a most interesting 52 52

Work on our new book about the history of Tickhill continues apace. The actual writing of the text will be complete in a few weeks, and work continues to add photographs and complete the layout work ready to send to the printers. The book has become rather larger (and more expensive) than originally planned and, as expected, the income from book sales will not cover the costs. We have therefore decided to ask for donations from both local businesses and individuals to keep the selling price down. To date the response has been excellent; donors will have their names only included on a page near the front of the book and the donation can be made in the name of a relative or friend if desired.

community January brought the announcement by DMBC that it was their intention to hand over the running of the library to a Community Project. This does not have to be the “END” but a wonderful opportunity to embrace the situation and again prove to DMBC that we are determined to make it work, portraying we are a Town to be envied. No doubt the Town Council will support the project in all ways that it can but there are no legal powers set down in statute allowing it to take over the running of the project. It has to be a Community project. The same has become apparent with the litter picking and the more litter that is collected the less DMBC has to do. As a snippet of information during a two week period our volunteer litter picker collected 34 bags of rubbish and scooped up 22 dollops of dog poo. Please take what litter you can home with you and clean up after your dog. I know most of you do but there are some people out there who do not!! If caught it is an £80.00 fine. Tickhill Town Council has very few material assets: The Pavilion, The Car Park and the Buttercross. The Pavilion over the past few years, before my taking on the role of clerk, had become a little neglected and run down. With effort the Council have made it into an asset and not a liability. I have tried to save money where ever possible to make improvements to allow for lettings to be good value. I am hoping that by now the floor will have been replace and that it will no longer be a tripping hazard. It still only costs £8.00 per hour to hire with special rates for lettings longer than 3hrs. If you would like to book please contact either of the Caretakers: their numbers are listed below. The Car Park has had the bollards moved to make parking a little easier 54 54

This last Christmas 2013 the Salvation Army collected £1423.91 which they divide equally between a community fund, central funds and Maltby’s own corps. The other big asset we have, which is not a material one, is our Website, maintained by one of our Councillors on a volunteer basis. Where would we be without our volunteers? Please use the site, and as usual if you are a Tickhill Community Group you can advertise for free. You can see what’s on in the diary and also extracts from the minutes with the latest planning applications. www.tickhilltowncouncil.co.uk I am sure we will not receive any funding for our diversionary activities from DMBC this next financial year but I am more than prepared to give up my time to accommodate the fun activities we can have at very little cost. Tickhill Grand Prix to support Yorkshire Air Ambulance
The Tickhill Grand Prix on 24th August is not only going to be a fantastic day of Racing but also promises to be a great day for all the family.
Importantly the day will also be raising funds for its Charity Partner - Yorkshire Air Ambulance - who it will support till at least 2016. The partnership will see Tickhill Grand Prix being promoted on the YAA website www. yorkshireairambulance.org. uk and in return the Grand Prix have agreed to donate a share from sponsorships plus there will fund-raising on the day by YAA volunteers. The public themselves will also be able to get actively involved with the Winner of the “Rollapaluza Roller Racing Challenge” given the honour of Awarding a cheque for £ 500 to the Charity. The important service that the Air Ambulance carries out requires £ 9990 per day and their two Helicopters cover all of 60 60
