‘‘

august already, and i hope that summer is still with us by the time you read this. What a fantastic July we have enjoyed, and what a difference it made to all the summer time events and end of term celebrations that could be enjoyed without the threat of rain. Tickhill Gala was a huge success, well done to the scout association for organising such a fabulous event every year in Tickhill.

As I write this I am in the midst of sports days, school discos and end of term church services, all lovely events enjoyed by school children up and down the country. But this year in Tickhill particularly poignant at St Marys School, not just for the year 6 leavers but for the whole school community as we say goodbye to Mrs Boaler our Headteacher who is retiring. Thank you to everyone who attended the family picnic after Sports Day and helped to make it so memorable. The September issues will be delivered to you from 31st August, anything that you would like included should be with me by Saturday 3rd August. I know that this is very early, however, I would like to close the office and take some time off with my children this summer. They are growing up fast and there may be very few summers left where all 3 will have the luxury of the long school summer break, and I don’t want to look back and wish I had made more time to spend with them. So if you wish to submit something for inclusion in the September issues or to book any advertising space then you will need to get in touch straight away! Apologies if you are reading this a week or more after the initial distribution and have already missed the deadline.

Best wishes, Paula x

community Hello everyone, what beautiful weather we are having at the moment, everyone looks so happy and smiley when the sun shines. However don’t forget animals get very stressed in this weather and need to be kept cool and in the shade when at all possible, also making sure they have access to lots of water. Not forgetting Never leave dogs or any animal in hot cars. You may think you are just going to be 10 minutes and your car in in the shade, but in that time the sun has moved and your beloved pet could have lost its life.

Peoftthe

Could I say a big thank you to everyone that came to our Scruffs dog show in Tickhill. It was a huge success as usual and everyone had a terrific time. With your help we raised over £2000 which was amazing. Would anyone be interested in donating some time to help us with our garden at the Sanctuary? Maybe a retired person or someone with a few hours a week to spare? The hours would be flexible but some continuity would be appreciated. Please call us 01302 711330 if this appeals to you. (coffee, tea and maybe chocolate biscuits will be free)! T

Misty Female April 13th Yes ? Yes ?

Lulu was a stray taken in by a kind lady who found her trying to scavenge a meal from the bird table one cold frosty morning. Covered in ’sticky buds’ and with her beautiful fur horribly matted, Lulu was in quite a state. With most of the tangles groomed/cut out it was time to find her owner. When nobody came forward the lady decided to keep her but as she lived on a verY busy road, Lulu would have to be a housecat. Lulu was very unhappy about this as she longed to explore the garden so reluctantly here she is looking for a new home. Lulu loves people but certainly not other cats or dogs. That way she gets all the fuss!

Money Saving Expert Ways to Protect your POCKET

WIS MARTIN LE Fantasising about white sands, tropical palm trees, warm crystal waters…? Well, WaKe UP! even if you’ve already booked an overseas holiday this summer, there’s work to be done to protect your pocket so you have more cash to spend on enjoying yourself. The later you leave sorting out holiday essentials, the more difficult and expensive things get. so long before you chuck your bikini or trunks into your case, follow my holiday Moneysaving‘need to knows’and save yourself £100s. PERMANENTLY HOLSTER UNBEATABLE EXCHANGE RATES Forget cash, travellers cheques or bureaux de change. You can smash these exchange rates with ease. The unexpected saviour here is a credit card—not just any card though, one of five specialist cards. These give you cheap spending when abroad, in the hopes you’ll also use the card at home. But don’t bother—I pop mine in my travel wallet and it only sees the light of day in the sun. To understand why they’re good, you first need to know that all plastic providers get the Visa and Mastercard wholesale exchange rate, which is near perfect. Yet most add a hidden 3% load to the rate they give us. Specialist cards 8 8

TICKHILL TODAY

Travel tips are load-free worldwide. These cards are Halifax Clarity, Saga (over-50s), Post Office and for Nationwide Customers ONLY, it’s Select Card. If you have a Santander Zero credit card then that’s also load-free, but no longer available to new customers. Only do this though if you pay off the card in full each month. For full details see www.mse.me/travelcards. BEWARE DEBIT CARDS ABROAD The very worst way to spend abroad is on what I call the debit cards from hell. Most not only add a hidden load to the exchange rate, they also charge a fee of between £1 to £1.50 penalty each time you spend on the card. So buy something costing £5 worth of euros and you’ll pay up to £6.50 for it. GET TRAVEL INSURANCE NOW OR YOU MIGHT NOT BE COVERED If you’ve booked and don’t have insurance, you’re not covered for cancellation or collapse. Go away more than twice a year including city breaks and policies covering a year’s travel are usually cheaper. If you are going away just one time, then use www.moneysupermarket. com, www.confused.com or www. gocompare.com to find cheap cover. If you’re not online, it’s costlier but most major supermarkets offer reasonably cheap policies. ENSURE YOU KNOW HOW TO TURN OFF SMARTPHONE DATA ROAMING Even if you don’t use the web overseas, apps can download £100s of data in the background. So you need to know how to turn off data roaming to protect yourself. Most phones have the option in settings. Plus never watch TV via 3G—mobile web watchers pay hideous penalties, for example: Three charges £10/MB in Canada. As a 30min TV programme uses 500MB, an episode of Hollyoaks could leave you paying £5,000. BOOK CHEAP CAR HIRE SOONER AND BEAT HIDDEN NASTIES If you need car hire overseas this summer, sort it out ASAP. Use

comparisons www.kayak.co.uk/cars and www.carrentals.co.uk. One thing to watch out for is many cheap firms charge upfront for a fuel tank and let you return it empty. For low mileage drivers, this can add £100 to the cost. Factor it in and pick a smaller car for a smaller fuel tank. Often car hire comes with collision damage waiver insurance that covers the car if you have an accident. Yet these often have huge excesses of £500. To cover this problem of their own making, car hire companies push costly ‘no excess’ insurance. Check if you can get excess cover for a fraction of the cost via comparison site www.MoneyMaxim.co.uk. FIND THE CHEAPEST FOREIGN CURRENCY Never change your currency at the airport. They know you’re a captive customer, and you get hideous rates. If you’re so late it’s the only option, at least call up in advance and pre-order when you tend to get an improved deal. www.travelmoneymax.com tool compares all the best rates. SLASH THE COST OF AIRPORT PARKING The sooner you book parking spaces the cheaper. Comparison sites like www. aph.com and www.Skyparksecure.com hunt for you. Also consider booking a night in an airport hotel. They sometimes offer a week’s parking with a night’s stay, which is occasionally cheaper than parking alone elsewhere. DON’T GOOGLE TO GET/RENEW EHICS, PASSPORTS AND ESTAS Many shyster sites appear, looking like official sites, but charge extra fees for nothing. Three to watch out for: A) EHICs are always free. Millions have expired though, so check yours is still in date—and always take it with you. The official site is www.nhs.uk/EHIC. B) ESTAs only cost $14. If you’re going to the US, go via the official site at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov C) Passports To ensure you’re not paying more than needed, go to gov.uk/renew-adult-passport.

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Year 6 go to the Isle of Wight The weather was set fair as Year 6 set o for their long awaited five days away in the isle of Wight. Cases were packed for an early start! The journey south proved to be busy-a typical Monday morning. After a short stop at services for breakfast we made good progress. Lunch was eaten in the sunshine, followed by a very interesting visit to the D-Day museum followed by a crossing by hovercraft. An exciting experience, if over very quickly! Then on to the lovely hotel in Sandown which was to be our home. We were made very welcome and had excellent meals and comfortable rooms. Various activities followed during our time on the island, including a super day spent at Robin Hill Country Park where we watched birds of prey, went through mazes, on zip wires, and down a toboggan ride. Another very good visit was to Carisbrooke Castle with its unique 16 16

donkeys. There was the opportunity to try on chain-mail and helmets and many photo opportunities. Thursday was very exciting as we embarked on our Watersports. Wet-suits were the order of the day as we bodyboarded in on the waves! All too soon Friday came, but the boat trip across the Solent with views of Osborne House and the warships around the harbour was so pleasant with the sun bursting out to accompany our return to the mainland. After the visit to HMS Victory and shopping we made the return journey north. Well done to all the year 6 pupils who went and who made the trip so memorable. T

community artist Janet Wood is on a mission to bring together doncaster’s musical youth in a brand new choir which will perform alongside other youth choirs in sheffield and Barnsley in a regional celebration of young voices. It will be a choir with a difference. We want young people aged 1119 to spend time in the gallery at The Point and use the visual art on display as inspiration for writing new songs and lyrics. Janet explains more: “This is a musical adventure driven by the young people themselves. The benefits of singing have been well documented. It’s a great way to express creativity and meet new friends. It’s also loads of fun and just makes you feel good!” Using visual arts to inspire choirs is all the rage this summer. The National Portrait Gallery has just announced its new choir, and we hope that by 2014 the Yorkshire version will see 90 young people sharing their own words and music at a high profile regional arts venue. We’re running free taster sessions in the summer holidays for anyone aged 11-19 who wants to come along and give singing and songwriting

There are a lot of us about. old Codgers who have lost the help and support of our beloved spouse through mortality, dementia, divorce or other misfortune. in our bumbling way we have to cope by ourselves, perhaps with a bit of occasional help from a cleaning lady, gardener, caring relative, obliging neighbour or somebody from the council. Most of the time, though, we are on our own and this presents us with a number of challenges. Some of the domestic jobs we have to deal with can be a real trial. They require a certain amount of alertness and constant vigilance which we are not always capable of providing. Take making some custard. I love custard though it is invariably the Bird’s Custard powder method rather than proper egg custard. It sounds easy enough to prepare. Insert a spoonful or two of the powder into a jug, add sugar to taste and cover with hot milk, stirring briskly. It is that hot milk which is the challenge. The pan on the hob has to be watched carefully. Momentary mind wandering or some slight distraction and the milk is sure to boil over, putting 26 26

T out the gas and producing the horrible stink of burnt milk followed by a tiresome cleaning up job. Another task to strain one’s waning resources comes when a button has to be sewn back in place. Fortunately I have inherited a decent selection of cotton reels with thread of assorted colours so something suitable can be found. Also a needle case with a baffling range of needles to choose from. I need one with a decent sized eye because threading a needle is a right fiddly job for clumsy male fingers. The actual sewing on process is often accompanied by language gleaned from a career in engineering and is quite unsuitable for polite domestic consumption. There are hazards to be aware of. Great care must be taken during vegetable preparation not to inadvertently cut a finger or thumb. The result is a frustrating business of trying to staunch the flow of blood and then to apply some suitable dressing held in place with Micropore. For some time afterwards the digit with its dressing makes all sorts of routine tasks difficult. How much better things were when there was a caring spouse to act as nursemaid and sympathiser!

Horticultural Society “Creepy Crawlies - How soils prosper and improve” was david Mitchell’s theme for our June meeting and he explained how “the answer lies in the soil” and extolled the benefits of encouraging worms to improve our growing medium. His plants certainly looked as though they loved his home-made compost! We had a really enjoyable day selling plants at the Gala on July 6th and were happy to give a donation to the Scout and Guide Association after last year’s weather problems. This year we were very pleased to have the ice cream van

just 20 yards away! Many thanks to all who donated plants and gave their time to this event. Our speaker on 29th August is Brian Schofield of Saxilby, Lincoln with “English Roses and the like” as his subject title. The MADL contribution will help to off-set the production costs so that the society can offer the book at an attractive and accessible price, to all residents of Tickhill. The NISA MADL fund is created by shoppers purchasing particular products in Taylors. The fund

accrues a few pennies at a time but quickly amounts to meaningful amounts of real benefit to local groups and societies. The next beneficiary will be the Parish Rooms. To apply for your local good cause please contact Chris Taylor via the store. T

Car Bodywork Repairer Supports Children’s Hospice Local mobile vehicle repair specialist, revive! has donated £100 to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice following a fundraising event. Business owner Mark Addison and his team held a promotion at Morrisons in Bramley. Revive! which repairs bumper scuffs, paint scratches and kerbed alloy wheels, pledged to give £5 to Bluebell Wood for each repair booked on the day. Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice provides care and support for children and young people with a shortened life expectancy. It helps and supports families throughout South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and parts of North Lincolnshire. Said Mark: “As a father myself I can’t imagine how traumatic it must be to cope with a child’s lifethreatening illness. Bluebell Wood provides fantastic support for families, across a wide area. They don’t receive any Government funding, so donations from the local community are really important.” Revive!’s customers include car dealerships, fleet operators and private motorists. Smart repair is a quality, cost effective and time-saving alternative to taking a vehicle to a bodyshop for minor paintwork repairs. Costing far less than most insurance policy excesses, 42 42

community Jonathan Whittaker and his dad undertook this challenge on Wednesday 12th June. Here is Jonathan’s account: We left home at 4:40am to drive to Sheffield to pick up the mini bus and collect police officers attempting the challenge, there were 8 of us in total. We arrived at Snowdon at 9:15am and started climbing straight away. It took us 3 hours 30 minutes to complete the mountain. The weather was appalling, throwing it down the whole time we were climbing Snowdon and to top it off, my boot split on the way down. It was a case of straight onto the bus with all our wet gear and onto the next peak which was Scafell in the Lake District. We got there at approximately 5pm as the mini bus was restricted to 62mph! We went straight up and down without stopping which took us 3 hours to complete. This time I was wearing my dad’s walking boots but it was still raining so we were wet through again! We then set off for Scotland at 8.30pm, driving through the night but unfortunately we got diverted 45 miles due to a landslip at Loch Lomond which added an hour onto our journey. I did manage to cat nap on the bus on the way though, even with my Dad’s driving! We arrived at Ben Nevis in the early hours of Thursday morning. We commenced the ascent of the mountain at 4am. Amazingly for Scotland it was dry but there was a low mist all the way up until we

got to the top of the peak (4,400ft) where it was sunny. We just had time to take some photographs then it was back down and back into the mist! We completed it in just over 4 hours, then crossed the road to the Youth Hostel and paid £2.50 for a much needed shower and change of clothing! I did this challenge in order to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of my Grandad. I am hoping I can raise as much money as I can to be able to help towards the research and treatment for this awful disabilitating disease, so that other families may not have to go through the upset that we had to. This has been the hardest challenge

that I have undertaken and I would like to thank the people who have donated already for this cause. T

Tickhill Cricket Club at Tickhill Cricket Club we are firm believers in promoting the sport to young children and teenagers. To do this we have a strong established junior section which, at this stage of the season, is promising good things for our players. Our U9s are currently 2nd in the league and have secured a place in the cup final. The U11s are through to the semi-final of the cup and are finishing their league season strongly. With a small squad of only twelve players, our U13s are well on course to finish 3rd in the league. Due to having twenty U15 players,

a decision was made to enter a team in the Bassetlaw league as well as the traditional Doncaster league. The Bassetlaw league side have won their division and are through to the semifinal of the cup; the Doncaster league is currently 2nd in the league and also through to the cup semi-final. Due to only having four U17 players, we are making up the team with U15s to enable them to play matches. Unfortunately, some clubs have withdrawn from the league, which has resulted in the U17s only playing two games.

Arts Review & what’s going on - AUGUST 2013

Whats on: I have already told you about Christopher P Wood’s exhibition at the djanogly art Gallery in Nottingham, in the adjacent gallery is an exhibition by david Measures from 12 July to 26 august and a parallel show at rufford Craft Centre from 4 august to 8 september. David tragically died almost 2 years ago from Cancer, he was a lecturer of mine on the Fine Art course at Trent Poly in Nottingham. One of the nicest of men, and as an artist quite revolutionary in his pursuit of the study of the natural world, most notably butterflies and after he retired he went weekly to Cresbrookdale in Derbyshire to draw. As a lecturer he used to load up the minibus and drive us out to the countryside to draw in the depths of winter or at the coalface at Gedling Pit, or rehearsing orchestras in the concert hall in Nottingham. I am proud to have counted him as a friend. His work is wonderful and I would urge you all to go and visit one of these shows and reap some of his enjoyment of being out in a field, completely absorbed whilst observing what is around you. www. lakesidearts.org.uk . Tickhill Estfeld Summer Production over three evenings in July the Key stage 2 pupils at estfeld performed “splurge”.

Parents and friends were treated to wonderful performances and the pupils and staff received many complimentary comments. The pupils performed extremely well and really did themselves and the whole school proud. Productions at Estfeld are always of an extremely high standard and this year was no exception. However it should come as no surprise as it really is the result of a lot of hard work, high expectations and the determination to put on a good show. Congratulations to all of the staff and pupils involved, especially Mrs Wall, Mrs Butterfield, Mrs Johnson and Miss Noble. T

Tickhill Gala What busy bees the parents of our reception Class were in designing the float judged to be the winner on gala day. This year the theme of the float was “save estfeld’s bees”.

The parents and pupils dressed as bees or flowers, whilst Mrs Johnson, the class teacher dressed as a bee-keeper. As the float toured the village onlooker were also treated to performances of “the bee song”. Understandably the children and parents were delighted with the result. School is very proud of their achievement and would like to thank all of the parents, Mr Walton and the Brittains for their help.

Well done, reception Class. T

Garden View

Designer Gardens it is estimated that just 3% of the UK population employ a professional garden designer, with most people opting to design their own outdoor space, or adapt one they may have inherited. The first decision to make when starting a plan is whether to make it look ‘designed’ or not. By this I mean do you like a structured garden with big sweeping curves and strong lines, formality and symmetry, or do you prefer a more informal space that looks like it ‘just happened’, almost by mistake, (these are much harder to achieve as you are often trying to recreate something nature does best). There was an industry debate recently which explored the idea of modern gardens being ‘over designed’. Just like in clothing fashion, there’s a revival of a certain era every so often, and it’s the same with design outdoors. Once up on a time, formal terraces were all the rage with pretty-coloured bedding schemes and clipped hedging. Then, decades later, these were dug up and replaced

with sweeping natural ‘landscapes’ , where trees and lakes were carefully located to make them appear as though they had always been there. Which is right? Well, neither, it’s personal taste and as long as it fits with the house style and surrounding landscape, I think you should do what makes you happy. After all, that’s what gardens are for, to be enjoyed. Once you’ve decided on a style, take some measurements of the boundaries, starting with the house. Use circles, curves, squares and rectangles to make some nice shapes on the plan, then choose a material to fill them in with. Usually the largest space will be the lawn, then patio or deck, and pathways, then fill the gaps with plants. Next month is the perfect time to plant, so we’ll be looking at planting plans in detail then. In 2008/2009, laws were introduced

TOP TIPS

Jobs to do this month include:   

50 50

Keep things simple. Don’t over complicate the basic design layout Use pergolas to add height and shade Consider hedges instead of fencing to add structure TICKHILL TODAY

 

Make space for at least one small tree Consider the maintenance of the new garden - decking and gravel are cheap, but require more maintenance in the long term

regarding things like changing levels in your garden, such as only being allowed to raise decking by 30cm above ground level, any higher would require a protective rail or balustrade; and also the consideration of sustainable ways to manage water, and where possible retaining it within the garden. So, before planning any major works to your garden, check with your local planning department that you don’t need permission

Until next time, happy gardening,

Lee...

Old Inhabitants

It has been my privilege and pleasure to have lived in Tickhill now for forty five years. Despite this long residence it is likely to take another decade or so before being accepted as properly belonging. Even then I will not qualify as a true Tickhillian (or Tickhiller, as some people would have it). It is not possible to identify a genuine old inhabitant just by looking or by casual acquaintance. The only true means of identification is to eavesdrop on a group of them talking. It is a revelation. The powers of recall and the depth of local knowledge are a source of wonder. The imaginary conversation may go something like this: Sorry to hear Alice Jackson has died. She was in my class at primary school when Miss Brewster was our teacher. Gosh! she was a bit of a tyrant was Gertrude Brewster. I had the cane from her more than once. And this sort of talk can go on for hours. The speakers, between them, knew everybody, and what’s more, knew most of their private business, where they lived, how old they were, who all their relatives were and what happened to them. This is total recall and local oral history on a grand scale. It is a treat to overhear these exchanges which we incomers cannot hope to emulate. We can only stand on the sidelines and admire the performance. With today’s more fragmented society when people leave their home town to go to university or find work elsewhere, this kind of local memory store is unlikely to be replicated which will be a loss. Motoring

Bentley Mulsanne By Tim Barnes-Clay Cars oNLY get you from a to B, right? Wrong. some are masterpieces of engineering that go far beyond the original purpose of a motor vehicle. You only have to visit a major automotive show to see how many people flock to glimpse the cars of now and the concepts of tomorrow. Cars enable us to be free; they take us places – discreetly, blandly or boldly, depending on the sort of car they are – and the image the marketing men have created around them. Bentley needs no introduction; it’s one of the world’s ultimate luxury brands. It’s not just marketing spin either; the facts speak for themselves – over 80% of Bentleys are still on the roads today. That says something about the legendary build quality of the car. A recent visit to its famous factory in Crewe gave me an deeper insight into why the make is so jaw-droppingly marvellous. The crème de le crème is the Mulsanne. So, strangely enough, that’s the car I concentrated on during my visit. I wasn’t interested in asking questions about fuel economy and other running-costs – after all they‘ll be at the bottom of your list of queries if you’re in the market for a vehicle with the same price-tag as a four bedroom new-build in suburbia. The boys at Bentley obviously care deeply about the Mulsanne transporting you in the most glorious style possible, preferably with a chauffeur at the wheel. And why not? After all, it’s a mammoth motorized status symbol – a message to humanity that you‘re incalculably wealthy, and a person with fine taste. Inside, the aroma of leather and wood shrouds you instantly. And there’s a reason 56 56

TICKHILL TODAY

for this: over 170 hours – that’s almost half the entire assembly process – goes into fashioning the cabin of the Mulsanne. Each steering wheel can take 15 hours to handstitch while stainless steel brightware twinkles perfectly, thanks to an exhaustive 10 hour finishing process. The wood veneer takes five weeks to turn from a rough root ball into a full set of mirror-matched, fine-polished leaves – and a time-honoured tanning process is even used for the leather; this is what gives off the heavy, worn bouquet that is so reminiscent of vintage Bentleys. The entire passenger area is also enclosed within a ‘ring of wood’ waist rail with an uninterrupted panel of timber gracing the Mulsanne’s dashboard. Inverted dial needles within the instrument cluster are suggestive of early Bentleys, while the whole console design is a clever nod to the Bentley wings motif. In the midst of all the wondrous wood and luxuriant leather, you also start to respect how the most up-to-date in-car technologies have been discreetly placed within the opulent interior. The upper dashboard houses a multimedia screen, placed tastefully behind an electrically operated veneered flap, while below sits a leather-lined media player contents drawer with connectors for iPod, USB and more. After swapping seats with the chauffeur, who’d driven me legally on the roads of England, it was time to experience the car in a different setting. We’d travelled all the way to Anglesey Race Circuit and I wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity to see what this beast could do without the threat of blue lights. I discovered the Mulsanne guarantees vast clout at low revs, while maintaining high levels of poise at any speed. Dab the accelerator and you’re immediately rewarded

with outstanding acceleration. 0-62mph arrives in just 5.3 seconds and the unrestricted engine will propel you to 184mph. The car is also stacked with intelligent safety equipment that learns how you drive. This means, even if you try and switch every gadget off on track, the car will stick to the twisty bits with hardly any tail waggle at all. Put bluntly, the Mulsanne is as near to flawlessness as you can get. So, if you can splash the cash – why wouldn’t you want to absorb all of Bentley’s past and present, wrapped up in its crowning glory? The Mulsanne is not just a car – it’s an investment in British history, culture and craftsmanship – and when the moment takes you, power and prowess.

at our “extra “ meeting on June 20th Malin Holst gave a fascinating archaeological talk about the information gained by analysis of bones from the skeletons of mainly working class people buried about 200 years ago near rotherham Minster and some wealthy people buried in Tickhill churchyard several centuries earlier. The comparisons were stark. Many of the rotherham skeletons showed signs of physical injury, malnutrition and disease, those from Tickhill showed signs of over indulgent living. it was a pity that torrential rain resulted in 60 60

a lower than usual attendance but those who did brave the elements enjoyed an excellent meeting. Thank you Malin. Our Summer Visit to Wentworth Woodhouse on 26th June was a great success. The House dates back to the reign of Charles II and was successively home to the Wentworth, Watson, Rockingham and Fitzwilliam families until 1989. Bought in a poor state of repair by its present owners it is gradually being restored and although our tour was the shortest of the three on offer it was enough to make many feel it would be worth a second visit. Our thanks to Dorothy Bradley for arranging an excellent outing. Opposite there is an advert for

Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - AUGUST 2013

as some of you will be aware since the New Year i have studying to help keep up with new legislation etc. i am pleased to inform you that by the time you all read this i will have completed the task. Up to date i have received 5 good passes in roles and responsibilities, Law, Procedures, Finance and Planning. i am about to submit my final piece of work for Community action and i am hoping for another good result. The work has been interesting and stimulating, and hopefully i will be able to bring to the council new ideas. The most rewarding aspect was to know what we do is correct and although it seems that councils “take a long time “ it is all very necessary to comply with legislation. We are now in a position to employ a Lengths’ Person for the Town centre and you will probably see Cllr Cannings, who has volunteered to set up the scheme, out there litter picking! It is envisaged by the autumn we will have employed someone local to carry out the work. The garden scheme and allotments have raised many legal difficulties and at his present time we are striving to overcome these. By the time you read this we will be well into the summer holidays however, if you are not already aware there are some children’s activities being run through the holidays. Working in partnership with DMBC, Tickhill Town council are able to offer free Rounders and Football coaching sessions for children aged 8+. More details are given at the bottom of the adjacent page. As a matter of course could I 62 62

Neighbourhood plan consultation our consultation at the Gala was well attended and it was good to talk to many residents about the various issues. We conducted a straw poll with all those who called, highlighting a few issues which were either controversial or ones where we need the maximum evidence of support in order to persuade other bodies to take the action this community seeks. The results may be of interest to readers. All the statements were supported as shown by the percentages given: 1 Put pressure on the authorities to downgrade the east-west road and therefore reduce through traffic when the new road opens from the M18 to the A638 (Bawtry Rd) 97% to 3% 2 Aim for all residential roads having a 20 mph speed limit 79% to 21% 3 Widen pavements in the town centre if possible 77% to 23% 4 Increase pedestrian safety with more traffic islands (crossing points) which will also slow down traffic 87% to 13%

5 Press for increased public access to Tickhill Castle 100% 6 Stop building in large gardens 83% to 17% 7 Try to ensure that any newly built houses meet local need 95% to 5% 8 Restrict the construction of hard standing and new buildings where there is a danger of flooding 98% to 2% These results and specific comments made will be taken into account. Draft policies will progressively appear on the Town Council website. Comments and suggestions on any of the issues above or on any part of the Neighbourhood Plan will be welcomed; there is now an e mail address tickhillnp@gmail.com Please understand that the Neighbourhood Plan cannot promise everything that people want! It does have force in dealing with planning applications and in putting pressure on such as the highway authorities, but it cannot itself deliver improved facilities. It will contain the aspirations which you ask us to include but pressure on such as DMBC Neighbourhood Teams will be required if action is to follow. John Hoare. T

A date for the diary with the Entrepreneur who means business one of Yorkshire’s own entrepreneurs, a man who has created eight million pound businesses over the last eight years and founded the UK’s largest membership organisation dedicated to helping businesses grow , The entrepreneur’s Circle (eC), is coming back to the county for a very special event. Nigel Botterill, who also wrote the Sunday Times Bestseller ‘The Botty Rules’, has linked up with South Yorkshire business owner Terry Gormley to deliver real, practical business help and advice at Inspiring Business: Yorkshire 2013 at the Doncaster Racecourse in September.

We have spent many years in Wadworth Primary school and we have enjoyed every day of it. it has been a pleasure to be here and we all have fully enjoyed it. We have experienced some amazing things here and it has been lots of fun.

Swimming champions and Book worms One of the most exciting thing (for Tobin that is), was swimming. It was a big step for him as he couldn’t swim but in the end he found confidence in himself and conquered his fears and swam. At the beginning of the swimming sessions, he was not able to swim without a float, but at the end he was able to jump in the deep end and swim the full length of the pool. He also enjoyed Book Day as he is a serious book worm. He liked that day very much and enjoyed sharing and talking about his favourite book. Enterprise day, if you have not heard 68 68

As Terry explains: ‘Often it’s just one bit of insight, an idea, or a new perspective that can make the difference in business. On September 19th there’s going to be so much practical help and support available to South Yorkshire business owners at this great day. It’s all about getting Yorkshire businesses booming.” Botterill, 47, who grew up in Leeds but who now lives in the Midlands, says ‘It’s a real privilege to come back to Yorkshire and work with entrepreneurs and business owners who have made the decision to be different and make a difference - not just to their businesses, but how they live their lives. I’m really looking forward to it.” of it, it is something where you make things to sell to raise money for your school. Over the years, there have been alien pet rocks, phone cases, beanie buddies, sweets, cookies and much, much more. You start with some money to buy equipment and things.
