the NOVEMBER 2013 edition

‘‘

I’m going to spend this month saying No.’ I’ll call it November. unknown

Having spent time at 2 Conventions since the last magazine, one at the ICC with 1300 business owners and another at a slightly smaller conference centre with over 100 other magazine publishers, I have had a really productive month, working on lots of new ideas. One of the things that I have learned however, is that I cannot do everything! To allow time for some of the things that are important to me, then there are times when I do need to say ‘no’ and not commit myself to things that distract me from what is really important to me. Sometimes we all need to say ‘no’ – but I promise I won’t do it too often!

The December magazines will be delivered from 29th November and anything you would like including, should be with me by Friday 15th November. Try not to leave it until right up to the deadline though – the December magazine is always the most popular magazine of the year and demand for space will be great. T

Best wishes, Paula x

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Tenancy £££ Deposits

- don’t get caught out!

In the recent case of Superstrike -v-Rodrigues the court of Appeal gave a decision that could have wide reaching consequences for Landlords and Tenants.

Tenancy Deposits - don’t get caught out!

The case concerned a tenant’s deposit taken before the Tenancy Deposit Regulations came into force in April 2007 but where the fixed term ended after that date and the tenant remained. The court held that the periodic tenancy arising in these circumstances was a new tenancy so the Landlord should have protected the deposit and served the prescribed information. As a result the Landlord’s claim for possession failed.

We hope that the decision will be appealed to the Supreme Court to clear up the uncertainty about whether the case also affects deposits taken after April 2007. We can review your tenancy agreements and deposit arrangements to advise you on your options to make sure you are protected. For more information or to arrange an appointment.

Learning for Life Succeeding Together

Autumn Treasures at Sherwood Pines Our Reception Class took their first educational visit recently. The children visited Sherwood Pines Forest, where they learned all about the forest and its inhabitants. In the morning the children engaged in some woodland art. The group worked together to make a big picture of a tree, using materials foraged form the forest such as twigs, pine needles, pine cones, leaves, tree bark and pebbles. It was a great joint effort and forest floor made a perfect canvas. The children also learned about the many inhabitants of the forest and why the forest is such an important place for wildlife. Of course the primary function of Sherwood Pines Forest is to produce wood; it is a managed forest and the children also learned about the vast variety of uses that the wood produced has. After lunch the children went on a “treasure hunt”, collecting a wide variety of objects from the forest to bring back to school. Autumn is a wonderful time to be in the forest as so much is changing and the colours seem to be at their best at this time of year. They also observed the habitats of some of the smaller inhabitants of the forest such as spiders, millipedes and ladybirds; hopefully not too many made the journey back to Estfeld with us. A school trip for the younger pupils is never complete without a visit to the play park and this was the perfect end to the day. There were many tired arms and legs and heavy eyes on the return coach journey, with just enough time for a snooze. What an exciting and busy day! T 32 32

Dark Nights and Dancing in November Question - What can you do to keep warm, make new friends, exercise and dance when the nights are drawing in and sunset is as early as 4:15pm in the middle of November? Answer – You can start linedancing at a brand Beginners new class at Oldcotes Village Hall on Thursday 14 November starting at 7:30pm. Whilst it is not exactly Strictly Come Dancing, there are many people out there who never thought that they would become linedancers. One of those dancers is Dave Birkinshaw. Dave had never danced before seeing line dancing and being inspired 16 years ago to become a qualified linedance teacher and establish the first Boots & Bolos linedancing class in Tickhill. Linedancing is often classed as exercise to music – but is much more fun than that! The age of dancers range from 8 – 80 and well behaved children with well behaved adults are welcome! A major advantage of linedancing is that you don’t need a partner. All the dances are ‘performed’ in lines – therefore no partner is necessary. We dance to a wide range of music these days, from country to pop and dances can be waltzes, cha cha, etc. If you too could be inspired, Dave is starting a brand new linedancing 34 34

Harvest Festival On the 10th October we had a Harvest Festival here at Wadworth Primary School. Harvest is a very important event here and we love to celebrate this time with songs, poems, and much more. We also help the charities M25 and Wateraid. By donating we can help children and adults all over the world who are not as fortunate as us. KS1 HARVEST FESTIVAL

seeing all the proud adults smile with the children.’

KS2 HARVEST FESTIVAL

To celebrate our Harvest we started by walking to Wadworth church and meeting the vicar, Reverend Alan Price. The KS1 harvest started at 9:30am and finished at 10:00am. Our head teacher Mrs May started the festival with a welcome and introduced the M25 project and Reverend Alan Price. KS1 started their ceremony with the song ‘Cauliflowers fluff y’ which was a favourite among all of the children. First up was reception singing their song ‘Oats and barley.’ Year 1 was up next performing their poem ‘Farmer, Farmer’. Before the oldest class of KS1 did their part, the pupils sang ‘The farmer gathers his hay today.’ Last but not least was Year 2 reading their poem ‘A time for thanks.’ KS1 finished their event with a very unique prayer with Mrs Price, the vicar’s wife. Reception teacher Miss Hodgekiss said ‘ I loved 36 36

KS2 also held a ceremony at 10:45 and finished at 11:15, on the same day as KS2 and they were introduced by Reverend Alan Price and the Head teacher, Mrs Julia May. They kicked off their harvest festival, by singing a song called ‘Conkers’. Year 4 were the first class to perform there poem ‘water.’ Next up were year 3 singing their song, ‘Ice-cream’, which brought a smile to the audiences faces. Then year 4 played ‘old MacDonald’ on their recorders. After that year 5 read a poem called ‘thanking God for the ‘Harvest.’ Then all of the pupils performed ‘when the corn is planted.’ Finally, the oldest pupils of the school, year 6, performed their poem harvest and it was a big hit with their clever routine. After all of that excitement, all of the pupils sang ‘Cauliflowers fluff y.’ This wonderful ceremony was finished with a lord’s prayer by Mrs Price. Learning support assistant, Mrs Deakin said ‘my favourite parts of the harvest were the lord’s prayer and watching all of the children singing in harmony.’ All of the parents left the church with a smile on their faces and we are sure all of the pupils are already looking forward to the next Harvest Festival. Tickhill Parish room events

We’re back into the swing of things now - and getting used to darker days and nights. Apparently by mid November the sunset is as early as 4.15pm Just another reason for us to get on with filling those nights! And where better than somewhere central like Tickhill Parish Room! With plenty of handy parking and a warm welcome inside, what more could you ask for?

Classes and regular ‘events’ include - dancing for children (from tots to teens), Yoga (for all abilities), WI meetings (which are definitely not all jam making and baking), Les Francophiles de Tickhill (knowledge of the French language is not essential to enjoy these evenings), Slimming World (an informal and friendly atmosphere), our own regular Saturday coffee morning (plenty of people popping in for a coffee and a chat). As well as all that we have the one-off bookings for fund raising coffee mornings and afternoon teas, our own Parish room quiz nights with Quizmaster Tim Sweed. Look out for the next one in January 2014.

Year 1 visit to Cusworth Hall

On Thursday 3rd October Lancaster and Clarel (Y1) went to Cusworth Hall to find out about the olden days. We looked at the all the rooms in Cusworth Hall including the kitchen which wasn’t like ours; it had cats and mice and pheasants. One of the rooms had old toys which we could play with. After lunch we went to school in the olden days, Mrs Towner and Mrs Bryant were really mean and shouted and we had to be silent. If you were naughty you had to wear a dunce hat or use the back board to make you sit up straight. We did the

washing like they did in the olden days, we had to scrub the clothes, use the dolly in the tub, rinse the clothes and put them through the mangle to get the water out. By Alexia, Amber, Darby and Jessica Lucy – I liked the washing because it was fun scrubbing with the soap and twisting the dolly. Theo – I liked doing the washing. I liked doing the mixing up and scrubbing with the soap. Oliver – I liked the old kitchen and seeing the cats and mice in the kitchen Chloe – I liked when I dressed up as a maid from the olden days. We were also entertained by the newly formed choir, who sang beautifully. Year 4 did an excellent job of leading the harvest with their thoughts, poem and song. Year 4 and 6 had made some delicious bread. Thank you to all who attended the service and those who made contributions to the collection for local food bank. As you can see from the picture it was very impressive. Well done to all who played a part in the service.

Harvest is the time when we gather the crops.

Harvest Farmers grow their crops in Autumn. Farmers gather vegetables in Autumn.

The fruit and vegetables get taken to a market The harvest celebration is set up in church. all sorts of fruit is grown, strawberries, apples and oranges. Farmers grow all sorts of vegetablescarrots, broccoli and sweetcorn. T

Lions Club Bonfire Night As I sit preparing this report it is raining again - I do hope the first weekend of November is not as wet. Our bonfire on the cricket field on Alderson Drive will be lit at 5.30pm on Saturday 2nd November. The evening, organised jointly with Tickhill Cricket Club will continue with two firework displays; the first at 6.00pm and the second after a short interval at approximately 6.45pm

The firework display will be on the playing area with excellent visibility all-round the boundary so young children will be able to find somewhere with a good view. Novelties and glow sticks will be available but health and safety rules do not allow the lighting of sparklers and with the Cricket Club bars open, the bringing of your own cans etc will not be allowed. We would ask everyone to respect the hallowed turf of the cricket field and to please use the litter bins.

Entrance is free but Lions will be rattling buckets and, as ever, all the proceeds will go towards deserving causes within the local community. Christmas Draw tickets will be available from mid-November until the draw takes place on Tuesday 10th December and we will be organising a race night and bringing Santa to everyone. at the Top Club in Rossington More on that next month. on Thursday 21st November. Lion Phil Thomas. T On the following Thursday (28th) Lions will be assisting the organisers with erecting the stalls etc for the Late Night Shopping Evening when the Christmas Lights will be switched on and then the month of December will be taken up with showing the district our new Christmas float

Garden View

Winter Sun It was back in August this year when I was walking around Parc de La Tamarita, a beautiful green public space in Barcelona, when I stopped to rest from the heat and to look at a selection of ornately arranged planting beds. It occurred to me that although intensely beautiful, lush, calm and extremely relaxing, this garden had a distinct lack of something we try and cram our gardens full of back at home - flowers. In fact, in this garden there wasn’t a single one. It was a wonderful view that made me think to myself ‘must a garden have flowers in order to be beautiful?’

annual gardening events, but why is it we feel it necessary to pander to the needs of such a fussy lot (the flowers I mean, not the gardeners). The dead heading, staking, pruning, feeding and general titivating we have to do to keep our blooms in peak perfection is time consuming and expensive, but to some I know, a garden without flowers is like a bride and groom without a wedding cake. At this time of year it can be tricky to find a garden with flowers, and as we progress into winter we will find the quest increasingly difficult, which is why we rely on evergreens and the skeletons of structural shrubs within our gardens to provide colour.

Providing structure and form in key positions with elements such as clipped spheres, hedges and cones can look wonderful, and for those to whom these plants are a little too contrived, structure is provided by late flowering grasses such as Stipa gigantea and the wonderful upright group of Miscanthus ... both of course look wonderful when in flower too! T

I know the debate ‘must a garden contain plants to be a garden’ took place earlier this year at one of the

TOP TIPS Before the weather turns too cold don’t forget to..

Don’t forget to cover cabbages, broccoli and other brassicas with net if pigeons are a problem

The choir is doing brilliantly and since starting in September 2011 with just a handful of members we have now approximately 60 members in total. But there must be more people who love music and who would really benefit from being part of Rock Choir. It is open to anyone of any age and ability who just loves music and singing. Members include teachers, solicitors, doctors and nurses through to students so it’s a brilliant way of bringing the community together through song. We meet once a week and learn songs ranging from Abba to Adele and we have so much fun. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and everyone just enjoys coming along and having a good old sing to blow the cobwebs away! We are currently running taster sessions every Monday at Hall Cross Lower School from 8pm – 9.30pm during term time for anyone interested in joining us. The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill & Colliery Surgery All members of the PPG are patients of the Tickhill and Colliery Medical Practice. We aim to pass on information and in both directions while trying to put forward the patients view and experience. Patients are gradually becoming more aware of the PPG and we felt we would share some of the comments we have received to date. Over 90% were positive the other 10% were about not getting to see the doctor of their choice, the telephone system, failing to get the appointment time they wanted and issues with the hospital. Here are some of the positives. • The Practice is very good at the moment. • You can get through on the phone now and the doctor phoned back – that was excellent. • The Medical Practice is much improved over the last 9 months. • Having the prescription box in foyer is a brilliant idea. • I like the articles in the Today magazine. • Having struggled in the past to get through by phone I have got through three times recently so a big improvement. 56 56

TICKHILL TODAY

• The sit and wait system has been very good recently. • The receptionists are lovely - very helpful. • You can always get an appointment or to speak to a doctor. • The staff at Harworth are very accommodating and helpful. • The PPG is a good idea and it’s good to know it exists. • The Colliery Practice is good in all respects and the best around. • We have no complaints everyone is very caring. Here are the responses from the practice to your latest questions:Q Why don’t the out of hours service have access to my medical records? A If patients have consented for information to be shared then details of medication and allergies are available but the information is limited. Details of Out of Hours contact are sent to the practice the next working day. Q I have been with this practice for over 3 months but still have no medical records – Why?

A When a new patient registers, a request for medical records is made to The Health Authority. Who then requests them from the previous GP. The Tickhill and Colliery Practice is reliant on the previous practice sending the records to the H. A. for forwarding to this practice. Q Why do hospitals discharge patients and tell the patient to ask their GP for a scan? Is it cost saving by DRI? A This is an area of frustration for the GP. Whilst in hospital all investigations and treatment are covered by a standard fee. To request further investigations by the GP results in the GP Practice having more charges against their indicative budget. Q Are GPs and Hospitals still part of the same NHS or are they now apart? A We are all part of the ‘NHS Family’ however hospitals are a legal entity in their own right and GPs are Independent Contractors commissioned by NHS England, under an agreed contract, to provide general medical services. Q Why don’t hospitals send information straight away to GPs? A Consultants all work in different ways, never the less, they tend to dictate their letters, which are passed to a typing pool or secretary who types them before passing them back for checking and signing, before they are processed out to GPs. Correcting Statement T Fest and Tickhill Together Readers may be aware that some time ago our local community group Tickhill Together instigated ‘T Fest’, an event that was staged during September this year but an event that was ultimately organised and staged by private individuals.

of the T fest Team are untrue, exaggeration, hearsay and conversations which have been twisted and taken out of context. An impression may have been created that the T Fest event had been staged by Tickhill Together rather than individuals when this is not the case.

At the point at which the individuals responsible for the organisation of T Fest assumed control of the event, we as individual members of Tickhill Together and people with reasonable business experience expressed a number of concerns regarding the management and organisation of T Fest and its accounting procedures and policies. These concerns were never addressed at any time prior to the event, and a decision was taken that Tickhill Together could not continue to be associated with it. Unfortunately, following the event, the organisers or those associated with them, made a number very public, untrue and defamatory comments about us and our concerns. We wish to address this publically, but in doing so make it clear that we do so with considerable regret, and make it clear that we do not speak on behalf of Tickhill Together as an organisation. We must however rebut the false claims that have been made. We would like it known that defamatory comments posted about us on the Facebook pages of Mrs. Jennifer Hall and Mr. Steve Madin 58 58

TICKHILL TODAY

Questions that we have raised at Tickhill Together or Public T Fest meetings regarding T fest its organisation and execution were asked for good reason and yet have never been addressed or answered. We understand the original Tickhill Together idea of the music and dance event was to bring people to Tickhill and let them sample all that the town has to offer whilst at the same time providing some entertainment as inexpensively as possible, showcasing some local talent within the music and dance genres. This remains an extremely positive idea for Tickhill. It is unfortunate that the organisers of the event or those linked to them have felt the need to publish statements that undermine and damage that positive idea. We require Mrs. Hall & Mr. Madin to remove the defamatory comments from Facebook, give a public and written apology because their comments are wrong and completely uncalled for, and require them to provide an undertaking that such comments will not be repeated or reposted. We are professional women who have been part of the community of Tickhill and surrounding area for many years.

Sounding Brass Rev. Sydney Smith used to say that his idea of Heaven was eating caviar to the sound of trumpets. The Tickhill Music Society’s catering budget doesn’t stretch to such exotic food but does provide interval biscuits and tea or coffee. The warm drink was particularly welcome in the austere atmosphere of St. Mary’s church, the venue for the first concert of the winter season.

The artists on show on Friday, 20 September were a group called Quintabile, a brass quintet with two women and three men who provided us with two trumpets plus a trombone, a horn and a

tuba. The crisp, clean sounds provided by this talented group of young players sounded particularly well in the sympathetic acoustic of the church. The programme ranged over the centuries, from Michael Praetorius (1571-1621) and Henry VIII in Tudor times through to George Gershwin and the playing throughout was excellent. Members of the group introduced some of the items and one piece featured a trombone solo delivered from the elevated pulpit. The music included some familiar items such as ‘Nessun Dorma’ by Puccini and the popular song ‘A nightingale

Tickhill YCA Neighbourhood Plan Thank you to all those who have contributed during the formal ‘Pre-Consultation Submission’ phase – this is when the NP has been on the Town Council’s website before going to DMBC for a further 6-week period on their website. The team will have done their best to take into account those ideas you have suggested and amended or improved the NP wherever appropriate by the end of October so that the Draft NP along with the other required documents can go early in November to DMBC. The latestamended version of the Draft NP will be on the Town Council website early in November. It is important to stress again that the Neighbourhood Plan is not a list of things which will happen! It does contain elements which, if it

is approved, have to be followed by DMBC Planning Department in dealing with applications from Tickhill. However, much of it expresses the hopes and wishes put forward by residents during the consultations. As such, it will strengthen the hands of the Town Council in their dealings with the Highway Authority, other DMBC departments and official bodies. Hopefully the NP will be approved next year and then be followed by an Implementation Plan which will indicate how we aim to achieve its detailed objectives over a period of years. John Hoare T

. . . but not TODAY

Our 2013/14 season is now well underway. After a commendably brief AGM at our September meeting we were fascinated by Debora Moretti’s talk about her excavations at Rossington Grange Farm. None of us had suspected that for over 1000 years until about 4-500AD there had been a relatively prosperous community in that area whose inhabitants both made pottery locally and imported high quality goods from other parts of Europe. Makes you wonder what some future archaeologist will make of Tickhill a couple of thousand years from now! Thank you 68 68

TICKHILL TODAY

Debora for a most interesting and well presented talk. Thank you also to all those who renewed their membership in the Library during the summer – it made organisation at our September meeting much easier. Thanks also to Lesley Nicholson who facilitated this arrangement. Our Christmas Social will as usual be held at the Millstone on Thursday 12th December. There will be a “Pie, peas and puds” supper followed by a talk by Professor David Hey on “Tickhill – A Norman Town”. Don’t be put off thinking that this will be too academic, David Hey is a leading expert on South Yorkshire history and a very entertaining speaker. Tickets price £10 each will be on sale at our

LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY November meeting but if you miss that contact Dorothy Bradley on 752429.

Lastly a note about our next meeting on Thursday November 21st. Jean Townsend will speak on “The Real Queen Mother”. Some of her views may be controversial but she is an excellent speaker and you can be assured of an entertaining evening. As usual the meeting will be held in the Methodist Schoolroom starting at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) and visitors will be welcome. T

community Much has been happening here in Tickhill during the past month. First and foremost it is my intention to launch a meet the Council afternoon giving you the chance to air your views other than at a Council meeting. These will be hosted in the daylight when I hope more of you will be encouraged to turn out. I will be starting this in the New Year so watch out for the notices being displayed. Secondly we have made contact with the schools for nominations for the Young Person of the Year Award and if you feel you would like to nominate someone of school age then please write to me and your nominee will be considered. Also it is our intention to start a similar award for an older member of the Community and nominations for the 2014 award should be sent to me through the post saying why you consider this person should be nominated. Please try and keep your nominations to no more than 200 words for both these awards. The litter picker is working hard in Tickhill and the fruits of his labours are being seen. We have a volunteer Councillor doing the work at the moment which is saving us money. The main area of concern is the Recreation Ground at Tithes Lane where we do get youths gathering and no one has any objection to this but please could you ask your children to bring their litter home or put it in the bin. I wonder how many of you actually know what your children are leaving behind. It is also my pleasure to announce that we will be hosting another event similar to the Jubilee event on the Recreation Ground. It is hoped we can carry out a similar programme and have picnics, games and teas, plus small awards for the sports day activities. This month sees the turning on of the Christmas lights on 28th November at 6.00pm with late night shopping. Hopefully another well attended event. The Winner of the Best Dressed Shop Window will also be announced on this evening so there will be much to look forward to and I will be running the count the number of lights competition again. This year the Dome on the Buttercross will be the item to guess. May I also congratulate the organisers of the Cycle Race and Tfest on a very pleasurable day. Many residents thought 70 70

Acoustic Music Nights Second & Last Tuesdays. These two nights replace the Musicians Night & the Folk Night at the Scarbrough Arms and both nights are now the same. The second Tuesday however still includes an element of Folk with a sing-along. The idea is to encourage a diverse range of musical styles at both evenings. There are no restrictions, so play acoustic guitar, any musical instrument and enjoy singing your favourite songs. These are open music sessions where new guests and everyone is welcome. The atmosphere is informal, friendly and ideal for pub musicians who like a relaxing night out. Examples of music are sixties, popular, blues, country and oldies etc. Monthly ~ Second & Last Tuesday. December is the exception - Last Tuesday is replaced by Third Tuesday with Traditional Christmas Carols.
