Maybe Christmas… the Grinch
thought, doesn’ t come from a store
Dr Seuss
Well I am inclined to agree. Of course it’s lovely opening carefully wrapped gifts and seeing delight on people’s faces from presents bought at the shops. (Even better when those gifts have been bought locally)! But it’s so easy to overdo it with the pressures of life nowadays. Christmas Day, is the perfect day to do nothing but spend TIME. It’s one of those precious days of the year where everyone expects you to be with friends and family, so grab it with both hands and even if you can only afford a couple of smaller gifts for your children or grandchildren make sure they’re ones that you can sit and do together. Kids love nothing more than to make things, and to have their parents/grandparents interact with them so use your imagination this year. And please spare a thought and some time for those without family who may be lonely this Christmas, and for those who do have to work to ensure that our hospitals and other essential services continue to function. Whatever you choose to do in the run-up to the special day make sure it is happy, peaceful and fun. The January issue will be delivered to you during the festive season – sometime between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this then please ensure details are with me by Friday 6th December – early I know but these magazines need to be produced, printed, sorted and delivered to all of my lovely distributors before I can take some time off with my family this Christmas!. tmonth Pe t he
The recession seems to have caught up with us with waiting lists for dogs and cats coming in to us reaching 12 weeks When someone needs to re home an animal and there is a crisis in the family they are unable to wait that lengths of time. Looking at the current situation has made us re-assess our current kennels to try and make further space. We are also looking at different ways of fund raising together with launching our £5 GIFT OF HOPE appeal. You will be amazed to hear that it cost over £500 per day to continue with the work we do. We really want to be here for the future but we cannot continue without your support. Even a standing order for as little as £1 a week would make such a difference as every penny counts. If you wish to contribute please call us and we will be happy to send you standing order details. We are also looking for people that can spare 2 hours a day between 10 and 12 to walk our dogs. You must be over 18 and used to dogs. The more exercise our dogs receive the happier they will be. We would also be very grateful if there is anyone that could give up a little of their time to become a handy man for the Sanctuary there are so many different jobs that need doing if you have a trade that would be a huge bonus but not altogether necessary at all, just another pair of hands would be sufficient. We would like to thank everyone who has made a difference and 10 10

Toya
Hello I’m Toya,
I came to Mayfl ower Sanctury as a heavily pregnant stray who had been ta ken in by a very kind lady. Unfortunately To ya had complica tions when she went into labour and she had to have an emerge ncy caesarean. She has now reco vered from her ordeal and is ready to find her new ho me. Toya can seem a little aloof un til you gain her confidence but then she is a very fussy little cat
Could you offer her the home th at she deserves?

Recipe corner
With the cold nights upon us & Christmas around the corner this a great dish for all occasions, from a Boxing Day Lunch to a centre piece on the Buffet table. This dish is from Russian origins and is basically a Salmon Pie with a twist.
We would like to wish our customers a Happy Christmas and thank them for their support throughout the year.
1 Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. 2 For the filling, place the rice and the
crumbled stock cube into a saucepan and cook the rice according to the packet instructions. Drain well and cool.
3 Mix the cooled rice, beaten egg, mushrooms, luxury prawns, parsley & lemon juice in a mixing bowl. Season with salt and pepper.
4 Assemble the coulibiac, roll one of the
blocks of puff pastry out in a rectangle slightly bigger all round then the salmon fillets. Roll out the second block slightly larger than the first one. Place a layer of spinach leaves on the smaller piece of rolled pastry place the first piece of salmon on top, then layer the filling mixture over
method
the salmon. Place the second salmon fillet on top of the filling mixture to make a sandwich and again layer with spinach.
5 Brush the edges of the pastry with beaten egg and cover the salmon filling with the second, larger sheet of puff pastry. Seal the edges of the pastry parcel together with your fingers, trimming off any excess. Carefully transfer the salmon coulibiac to a greased baking tray.
6 Using a knife, make one or two small
cuts in the top of the pastry, then brush with the remaining beaten egg. Transfer the salmon coulibiac to the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the pastry is crisp and brown.

Year Three Visit to The Thackray Medical Museum On Tuesday 5th November 2013, the Year Three children of Tickhill St. Mary’s school embarked upon a most exciting adventure to the Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds. After an early arrival at school, the future medics boarded the coach bound for the former hospital building, arriving promptly for a 10am start. During the morning, pupils discovered everything to do with the human body: the senses, digestion, healthy living and much, much more. Buttons were pressed, feely boxes were explored and eyes were tested! The group then headed off into other areas of the museum, where they learned about dentists over the years, how hygiene in hospitals has saved lives and what it is like to have a baby! (Some brave students even donned the “empathy belly” to experience what it might feel like to carry the weight of a baby!). After our delicious packed lunches, the children of Year Three paid a brief visit to the shop before stepping back in time to a street 32 32

in the Leeds of 1842. We were shocked and disturbed by the unsavoury conditions in which people had to live, including the filthy outdoor “privy” and the appalling stench! Each child took the part of a character with a serious illness such as measles or whooping cough, and was encouraged to locate their character’s house to study how the living conditions might have contributed to their plight. A cure for the illness was
then sought through visits to the pharmacy, the herbalist and also the local “quack” doctor, selling his particular brand of cure-all elixir! The children thoroughly recommend visiting this attraction, as they learned a lot about the human body, and had a most enjoyable time. T

On Tuesday 5th November Year 4 embarked upon a journey back in time. Armed with authentic and tasty fare in beautiful baskets they travelled to Temple Newsam. Mistress Julia and Mistress Helen guided them through history, setting the scene for their day which included making bread ‘from scratch’ involving threshing, winnowing, gleaning and milling or grinding. Then the bread was made, kneaded and baked in
the ovens of the big house. This was followed by an experience of the Barber Surgeon’s Chest showing some of the medical instruments which were used in Tudor times. Quite gruesome. The day concluded with a court scene which gave an example of Tudor law enforcement in action…… But who did steal the bread? We all had a fantastic day and Year 4 not only looked the part, but played the part as well.

St Mary’s Remembrance Day Representing the school, Grace Rowbotham and Jake Barraclough placed a wreath at the foot of the Tickhill War Memorial on Sunday 9th November.
On Monday 11th, Year Six lead the Remembrance Service in school. All the pupils contributed by either reading and or singing in the choir. A two minutes silence was held complete with the Last Post. The rest of the school, family, friends and governors were invited to watch. ‘We each had a speech, poem
or quote. Although we had fun, it was a very serious and sad time.’ (Jake Barraclough.) ‘At the start we talked about remembering everyday things then we talked about Remembrance and why we wear poppies. My favourite part was reading out my poem.’ (Lucy Baker)

Schizophrenia
This is the story of Bridget Who has a peculiar quirk, Although she’s incredibly clever Her leisure gets mixed up with work. At weekends she lives for her garden (As every keen gardener should) On weekdays she works as a Medic And I’m told that she’s frightfully good. And that is the source of her problem; Though she knows about ailments and germs Yet because she is keen on her garden She tends to use gardening terms. Then again when she speaks of diseases Botanical names spring to mind So the ones used when out in her garden Are all of a medical kind. When the stresses of work are behind her The end of the week brings a change, There are plants to be tended and watered And lovely cut flowers to arrange. The Hernias are all looking splendid, The Arthritis blooms are all out, The Sciatica bed is a picture, By the fence there’s a fine crop of Gout Halitosis won’t flower till later But Nausea borders the bed. Pink Aorta blends well with the Asthma And sets off the Ague’s bright red. The low growing Palsies are pretty, Blue Hysteria clings to the wall, The self-seeded Acne is thriving, The Pyorrhoea is stately and tall. Red Corpuscles grow in profusion Invading the Cardiac plots, The pink and the purple Contusions Look well in their earthenware pots. Some greenfly are found on the Phobias, Amnesias grow under the trees The strong, heady smell of Dementia 36 36

Plumbago will cause her no worry, She deals with Dianthus with care For a course of Euphorbia tablets Will always produce a repair. Her patients all know she’s a marvel, She always can find them a cure So there’s only one fly in the ointment — The pharmacist isn’t so sure! So what can be done about Bridget; Can anyone think of a scheme? Is this a problem for Doctors Or the Gardeners Question Time team? Beginner’s Line Dancing with Boots & Bolos In last month’s magazines we asked the question ‘What can you do to keep warm, make new friends, exercise and dance when the nights are drawing in and sunset is as early as 4.15 in the middle of November?’ Well - the answer was - ‘Learn to Line Dance at Oldcotes’! People came from all over - and everyone went home with a certain glow and a big smile. Lots of fun was had and quite a few calories used up in the process! You can’t help chatting with your neighbouring learner as you line up, so new friends were also made. If you couldn’t join us for the first classes - don’t worry. It is easy to catch up at this stage. Dave goes over the dances learned the previous weeks and really helps people to catch up. So - if that’s all that’s putting
you off - come along! Give it a try and fill at least one dark night this winter. The class is at Oldcotes Village Hall from 7.30 p.m. - 9.30 p.m. with a break for tea and biscuits.

DMBC Environment Cabinet Member Christen Mills called in during the morning to see how Tickhill’s community is helping itself, and she was very impressed with what she saw and heard. We concentrated our efforts along Bawtry Road from motorway down to the Spittle (A631) and in total we collected 14 bags of general rubbish, one wheel complete with tyre, a traffic cone, a car faring, 3 gallon drum and large box of steel rods, and all in two and a half hours. All the rubbish was cleared away for us by our area officer. A big thank you to all those who helped. Nigel Cannings Tickhill Town Councillor & Deputy Mayor. T
Annual Carol Concert The plans for the annual carol concert with The Sheffield Singers are well under way.
Regulars to this event will know that The Sheffield Singers mainly comprises members of Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus whose usual performance venue is Sheffield City Hall. The Singers love coming to Tickhill, some even bringing overnight bags in case bad weather prevents their getting home afterwards, such is their dedication to the event. As well as from the Sheffield area, they travel from West Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and the depths of Derbyshire to take part. Darius Battiwalla will accompany the Singers as well as performing solo organ pieces, Sue Morton will entertain us with seasonal readings and the whole evening will be in the capable hands of Rachel Copley. During the interval Patrick Andrews and his team will be on hand to dispense wine and mince pies. All this will take place in St. Mary’s Church, Tickhill, on Thursday 19 December 2013 at 7.30pm. Admission is as last year: Adults £7. Accompanied children are admitted free. Any profits from the evening will be given to the Marie Curie cancer charity. Safer Neighbourhood Team
We have seen an increase in thefts from motor vehicles, particularly in but not restricted to the Bawtry area. We are trying to emphasise the importance of securing vehicles, even if just left unattended for a few minutes, and would ask that nothing is left on display inside vehicles which might encourage thieves. We are actively checking vehicles to see if they are secure, and it’s really surprising just how many aren’t!
Christmas time is rich pickings for burglars too and not only do households put everything out on display around the tree, some people even go to the trouble of leaving their house insecure so that burglars can just walk in and take everything. All the presents around a tree look very nice, but households that do so really are setting themselves up as a target. Be safe, rather than sorry this Christmas. Save our Hedgerows & Trees
Why are trees disappearing in Tickhill? Hedgerows are being taken out all over the place.
Often it appears to be a selfish action by landowners for an extra foot or two of land, usually to erect ugly fences. In many instances the trees are ‘Council’ owned and their permission should be sought to fell, however as these vandals know, DMBC’s reaction time can be 7-10days. It’s then too late for our birds, wildlife and the environment.

A host of hidden eBay secrets
WIS MARTIN LE The ubiquitous giant online auction site eBay may seem a relatively simple beast. Yet beneath the shiny shop front there are a host of hidden secrets enabling you to pay less.
It all stems from the fact eBay’s a mammoth marketplace with millions of goods and hordes of buyers competing for the same items. It’s all too easy to get sucked into bidding wars, with your finger quivering on the mouse, and then just overpaying at the last minute. Yet a host of hidden tools and websites allow you to hone in on hidden uber-deals overlooked by rival bidders. Here are my top eBay buyer’s tricks… EXPLOIT SPELLING MISTAKES Typos and eeroars on eBay are incredibubbly common. Of course, that meanz fewer people searching for things, so the prices you get are rocc bottom. A host of mistake spotters, such as www.fatfingers.co.uk, www. goofbid.com and www.bargainchecker. com trawl eBay for all possible spelling mishtake combinations which have lower prices. While we’re on it, if you’re selling remember to use spell check. FIND COLLECTION ONLY BARGAINS NEAR YOU From designer sofas to skis and scooters, sellers often specify items are ‘collection only’. This

eBay means fewer competing bidders and serious local bargains. You can’t yet search for this on eBay, but if you go to my eBay Local Deals Mapper tool www. moneysavingexpert.com/localebay it finds these bargains for you and maps how close they are. There’s also an Android and iPhone app version. Results can be powerful, such as this from my site user Jen_Jen1985: “Had been looking for a double buggy, but most ended up selling for around £40. I found one via the Local Deals tool and ended up winning it for £1.24!” BAG NO-BID 99P ITEMS Often sellers start auctions at 99p or less, hoping a tug of war will break out between buyers. Many items go unspotted and stay at these superlow prices. It’s possible to scour eBay just for these with 99p spotter www.lastminute-auction.com. Double-check delivery charges, as some sellers hope to recoup costs by charging a little extra. Though eBay has now set maximum delivery charges for many categories. DO YOU NEED IT? Before I go to much further with this, just a quick word of warning about not getting carried away with bargains. It’s worth following my money mantra before you spend cash. If you’re skint, first ask yourself “Do I need it?, Can I afford it? Have I checked whether it’s available cheaper elsewhere?!” If the answer to any of those is no, don’t buy it. BUY STOLEN GOODS ON THE CHEAP Well, nearly, but great headline, you must admit. This one isn’t actually eBay, but is worth checking - it’s legal via police auction site www. bumblebeeauctions.co.uk. Forces in England and Wales use this eBay-style site to sell lost property or goods seized from criminals when they can’t find the rightful owner. It’s cracking for bicycles,
among other things—for example a high-spec specialized bike went for £50 (similar ones were £200 on eBay). Most larger items needs to be collected in person from local nicks. Some smaller items can be delivered, though check postage prices before buying. FIND AUCTIONS CLOSING IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT Listings that finish at anti-social times often get fewer bids (a warning for sellers there too). Pick a time slot and a www.baycrazy. com’s Night Time Bargain Searcher cruises for these vampiric bargains. If you don’t fancy burning the midnight oil, combine this trick with auto-bidding tools below, which can bid on your behalf while you’re deep in the land of nod. DON’T ASSUME IT’S CHEAPEST BECAUSE IT’S ON EBAY Never assume it’s a bargain until you’ve checked prices elsewhere first. Use shopbots (shopping robots), that whizz to scores of internet retailers to find the cheapest price. My MegaShopBot.com tool auto-searches the best of these for each category. RECLAIM 14 YEARS OF LOST MUSIC Buy CDs/vinyl from Amazon and its Auto rip services mean you can now get the MP3s for nothing. Yet did you know this works for anything bought since 1999? So you can recover years worth of music from CDs you may have lost or damaged. To check for lost music, just log on to Amazon.co.uk’s Cloud Player to see what music’s in there - you can then stream or download it. In 10 minutes, one member of my team found 150 albums going back 13 years. T

Seeing your children over Christmas
T
he Christmas period can be a very difficult time for a child whose parents have separated. It is vital that parents remember that the most important person, especially at this time of year, is the child. Most children of separated parents, if asked what they would like to happen over the Christmas period, would say that in an ideal world they would like to mum and dad to be together and the whole family to be happy. Unfortunately we do not live in an ideal world. This means that Christmas can be a very tough time for a child, which can be made much worse if parents cannot reach an amicable agreement after the arrangements to be made over the Christmas period. It is understandable that each parent wants to be able to create the perfect Christmas for their child. However as a parent you need to try to put yourself in your child’s shoes and imagine how they are feeling. Any conflict between parents will have a negative impact on the Christmas festivities, and memories of this can remain with a child for a very long time. It is important to try and agree arrangements for the Christmas period well in advance. If it is left until Christmas Eve, this will only cause problems for everyone. Plans will have already been made. Even if there are regular arrangements for contact in place, it is always worth checking with the other parent to make sure that there are no misunderstandings.
It can be especially important at this time of year to remember that a child loves both parents, and does not want to hear or see any fighting or arguments. It may be helpful to consider the following when making arrangements for Christmas: 1 2 3 4 5
6
Your child is the most important person whose needs should be considered when making arrangements for Christmas contact. Ask the other parent to work with you on this issue. Remind your child, and yourself, that Christmas is one day, and that there will be plenty of other special occasions over the next 364 days. Do not speak negatively to your child about the other parent or criticise the other parent’s plans. Do not upset your child by having an argument or heated discussion at contact handover. Protect your child from any disagreement between you and your former partner, and make every effort to ensure that the child does not pick up on any hostilities.
It is always a fine balancing act to get the contact arrangements right, but it is worth it to ensure a happy Christmas period for your child.
If you do need legal advice on this or any other family law issue then please contact Jane McCulloch for an appointment at Bawtry or Ollerton on 01302 710555.

Children in Need
On November 15th 2013 the staff and pupils came to school in their nightwear and brought their teddies to school. For this privilege they were asked to make a donation to Children in Need. The day was very colourful indeed and there was also a mid-morning snack of toast to enjoy. Thank you to everybody who participated and helped to raise a grand total of £291 for this very worthwhile charity. T
Remembrance Day 2013 Remembrance Day is always a very poignant subject in school as we think about others at home and around the world who have given, and continue to give so much for the safety and security of others. In the weeks leading up to Remembrance Day we work with the children to discuss why this special day is commemorated and try to approach the very emotive subject as sensitively as possible.
In school we always hold a special assembly and some of our pupils read out poems that they have penned on the subject of Remembrance. We observe our two minute silence whilst we take the time to stop, think and reflect on those past, and present who have served and continue to serve their countries with pride. Our Reception pupils made their own poppies, whilst the older classes presented their thoughts and feelings in poetry and prose. Our pupils have surprising insight, given their ages and show great respect for those they are thinking of. Their work is displayed in a prominent area of school for the remainder of November. Afterwards the work is made into a Remembrance Book and kept in our school Reception area – the book is often commented on by visitors throughout the year. On Remembrance Sunday pupils from Estfeld and St. Mary’s School again attended the church service together and laid a wreath at the war memorial on behalf of the staff and pupils of both schools. We used the British Legions own words as a message on the wreath – it says very succinctly why remembrance is so important a subject for our children to consider. T 48 48

Well done to Ethan Crane, Year 12, who competed in the district’s Rotary Young Musican Competition, winning the Senior Instrumental Class, playing two pieces on his electric guitar, one of which, “Summer” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, he arranged himself. He now goes through to the Yorkshire and Humberside district round. Also competing was Emma Shiels, Year 12, who was placed high enough to go through to the next round and Jack Hewitt, Year 7, who played in intermediate instrumental class.
Katie Cross & Elisha Dunn, Year 10, have been involved with the Macmillan charity as part of their volunteering section for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Surviving Christmas Surviving a modern day Christmas can be challenge enough for humans, but just imagine how difficult it is if you’re a plant. You’ve been reluctantly forced to flower, grown in a light controlled polytunnel and you’ve been force fed with growthstunting hormones to ensure you’re not too straggly when flowering on Mrs Cratchit’s table …. and here’s me feeling sorry for the turkey! It seems such a shame that after all the effort, you go and kill the poor thing after just one week of taking custody. This year will be different though, because whether giving or receiving a houseplant this festive yuletide, help is at hand with my top tips for keeping them alive (until New Year at least!). House plants give such a wonderful display, and are sure to last longer than a bunch of flowers. Choose from large flowering Cyclamen, brightly coloured Azaleas, sweetly scented Jasmine and of course the traditional Poinsettia. Oh, and don’t forget about bulbs, ‘Paperwhite’ Narcissus are synonymous with Christmas, and forced Hyacinths too, but I can appreciate that their strong scent is best savoured in spring. Before we go on to the care of houseplants, let’s just clear one thing up, houseplants hate houses! Dry central heating, low light levels and draughts are all things houseplants really don’t like, as most of these plants come from very humid, 50 50

tropical parts of the world. The best way to ensure your flowers bloom for longer and your leaves don’t go brown at the tips, is to ensure the right conditions for survival. Avoid placing plants in a draughty location such as windowsills, or near to a frequently opened door, (they won’t appreciate the large fluctuations in temperature) Avoid hotspots, such as in front of or above a radiator or fire Water plants by plunging them into a bowl of tepid (not cold) water, and then allowing the water to fully drain out from the pot before returning to its location Azaleas like humid conditions, so stand these on a tray of gravel filled with water, (but ensure plants are not sat in water) Create a ‘plant area’ where groups of plants can be stood together, this will create more humidity Avoid direct sunshine Ensure the compost never dries out or is too saturated, water little and often Remove faded flowers to prevent disease and to promote flowering And finally, don’t get emotionally attached, think of flowering houseplants as a medium term bunch of flowers or a Christmas decoration, and after flowering if they look a little jaded, return them to the compost heap in the sky - I don’t think there’s any worse house plant tragedy
than a straggly Poinsettia in July with three stunted yellow leaves. Poinsettias are popular because they look wonderful, but here’s a little word of warning, be careful not to get the sap of a Poinsettia on your skin as they can cause irritation, and always keep them out of reach of pets and children. Tickhill Parish room events When we receive this month’s magazine we will all be feeling smug because Christmas is ‘sorted’! The pudding will be well stirred, the turkey is definitely ordered along with mince pies and pigs in blankets! The decorations might even be up - because this year we are all going to be so much more organised! Do all women say this every year?
My Parish Room diary needs to be kept fully up to date at all times, but it seems much harder to organise in November and December! ‘Things’ seem to mysteriously crop up in a much more speedy way and ‘dates’ are upon us sooner than we thought. One date not to miss is John Marsden’s Soup Lunch on the 20th December, from 12 noon 1.30p.m. It’s the last one for this year (more planned I believe in 2014) and hopefully will be the same big success previous lunches have been. On the last Friday before Christmas what could be nicer than homemade soup after your morning shopping trip. There is no set price for the lunch but a suggested donation of £3 would be welcomed. There is no need to book, but it’s probably a good idea to come early! December regulars in the Parish Room will be Nellie Stagles School of Theatre Dance on Tuesdays, followed by Yoga. WI meet on the 4th December at 2 p.m. with Francophiles following later that evening at 7 p.m. We will be serving refreshments 54 54

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill & Colliery Surgery We have just completed a second busy year involving a variety of events most of which we have reported on. The latest Information Session was on the topic of Awareness of Alzheimer’s Disease presented by Kath Rawlings This event was extremely informative and interesting and helped us realise the importance of inclusion in our local area. Kath gave us statistics, explained the main forms of Dementia, and led us through the challenges that the patient and their carers will face. She explained the progression of the disease in its different forms whilst also making us aware of the deterioration caused to everyone by infection, dehydration, malnutrition and lack of the necessary vitamins and minerals. The symptoms of dementia were highlighted along with the impact on family and carers as well as on the patient. We learnt that • Emotions, which tend to be the foundation of our memories last the longest. • Longer term memories last longer than recent memories which disappear first. • The person may not see themselves 56 56
TICKHILL TODAY
as they are but rather as they were. • Perception of what is seen may be different from the fact. • Thirst and hunger responses may go, and night and day could have no meaning. • Early diagnosis is important. • Medication can slow down the development and give time to enjoy, plan and organise. • Multitasking is harder for people with dementia. • Noise, distractions and bustle do not help people with dementia . • People with dementia need emotional and practical help and their dignity supporting. • A healthy diet, stimulation and exercise help everyone to stay healthy. Did you know that Two thirds of people with dementia live in the community. Of these: • 75% don’t feel the community is geared to cope with them or for them to cope with it. • 67% don’t feel part of the community. • 61% are lonely. • 48% feel a burden on their family. • 44% say they have lost contact with friends. We all need to show more understanding, awareness and empathy with people who have Dementia and with their carers.
The second speaker was Gill Owen a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner who takes referrals from the Practice or can be contacted via The Talking Shop in Doncaster by calling in or telephoning 01302 565650. She can help if anyone is experiencing anxiety, panic, bereavement, self-esteem issues, feeling down, eating disorders or dealing with phobias. She talks to people does an assessment and can refer out to other practitioners such as psychological services or involve the patient in a group where they learn about their condition and develop management strategies. All decisions about care are made with the patient who is empowered to make informed choices. The third speaker was Kate Ripley a Well Being Officer working with Doncaster. She explained her role in terms of facilitating access and provision for residents. She visits individuals in the community, completes a holistic needs assessment, & work towards maintaining people’s independence for as long as possible, reducing or delaying the need for mainstream health & social care services. This may be achieved in various ways including reducing social isolation, preventing falls, managing medication, & signposting to appropriate services such as counselling, exercise & weight management, & befriending services. An exit poll showed: 100% of participants found the session very interesting, 100% of participants found it Informative and of those 92% found it very informative. 100% of participants found it worthwhile and of those 92% found it very worthwhile. The PPG wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Happy New Year. We can be contacted by email at:- tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo. com or via either surgery. T

Tickhill Horticultural Society ‘Delightful Daisies’ was Dr Andrew Ward’s subject for our October meeting and in the course of two hours we saw the full range of ‘daisy shaped’ flowering plants of all colours and sizes – from 2 inches high to giant sunflowers. A hardy chrysanthemum specialist, Andrew returned to Norwell with rather fewer plants than when he arrived. It was a very enjoyable evening. The last meeting of 2013 is on 5th December in the Methodist Schoolroom starting at 7.15pm when Robert Potterton of Potterton’s Nursery, Caistor, Lincs will talk to us about ‘Alpines and Bulbs from Mountain to Market’. Violin & Piano
It is a long time since Tickhill Music Society hosted a concert for Violin and Piano. It was October 1985 when Lorraine McAslan treated us to a violin programme and so it was particularly gratifying to hear Eloisa-Fleur Thom with her pianist Mark Austin at this season’s October concert. A posthumously published work by Ravel provided some Gallic lightness to a programme otherwise full of works by the three great German B’s: Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. The Bach Sonata for solo violin which opened the programme seemed a touch severe without any piano support but was sensitively and thoughtfully played. The everpopular ‘Spring’ sonata by Beethoven, with its melodious freshness, has a principal tune which sticks in the memory and the whole work was played with musicianship
and technical excellence.
The last violin sonata by Brahms in its characteristic richness demonstrated the composer’s gift for making a duo work sound quite orchestral. It has a singing adagio movement which was beautifully played, followed by the contrasting jerky syncopation and fierce attack of the third movement. A richly deserved encore was a short piece by Debussy,

arranged by Jasha Heifetz. Altogether this was a satisfying and rewarding concert played without flamboyance but with concentrated attention to the music. The violinist was unobtrusively but effectively supported by the piano playing of Mark Austin who also provided some welcome introductions. Another enjoyable success for this enterprising music society. A.G.L. T

Tickhill Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan Churches
Not again! If you, the reader, wonder whenever this is going to be completed, spare a thought for the working parties which have been producing the Neighbourhood Plan! The whole process will, from its inception to final approval by the residents of Tickhill, in a referendum, take about two years in total. We are now some 18 months into the process which has included all the consultations that have taken place with Tickhill residents, local groups, schools, the business community and outside interests including national bodies By the time this magazine reaches you, we should be in the formal submission stage when the Neighbourhood Plan will be published on Doncaster Council’s website for a further 6 weeks for comments, suggestions or objections. There is still, therefore, the opportunity to make the Plan better. It will then come back to us for consideration of anything
which has come in, and for possible improvement or amendment before the last stage is reached – review by an independent examiner. It is his or her task to ensure that the Plan meets all legal requirements. This is a good moment to thank everyone in Tickhill who has encouraged us and who has sent in helpful comments. As a result there has been constant alteration and improvement. So the Plan should represent the aspirations of the whole community. What we are aiming for is a result which will be (1) effective in the determination of planning applications in the parish and (2) helpful in persuading other official bodies to take the actions which the community wants in areas such as highways and flood prevention. There will not be miracles overnight and our Plan will have the same date as Doncaster’s strategy, in theory lasting until 2028, but no doubt much will change over that period. John Hoare. T

It was great to see so many people attending the bonfire and fireworks at the Cricket Club on 2nd November. That a downpour would clash with the start of the fireworks was a complete and disappointing surprise on an evening when we were just expecting strong winds. In October Kath Burkinshaw gave an outstanding talk to a packed audience about “A Year on a traditional Derbyshire Hill Farm”. To be a Derbyshire hill farmer you had to be tough. Hard work and hard winters had to be endured, rewarded (if you were lucky) by a successful lambing season and some profit for the year. Kath communicated all this and more in a manner which kept her audience spellbound from beginning to end. Several members said afterwards that this was one of the best meetings they had ever attended, thank you Kath very much indeed for a super evening. 68 68

community As I put this article together we are coming to the end of another calendar Year, where does the time go. In council we are quite busy preparing for Christmas and the New Year. Although our year is not over yet, we are only three quarters there. We are planning our meeting for January which will include the Budget for our next year commencing in April. We are pleased with the achievements fulfilled this year, one being the refurbishment of the toilets in the pavilion which has just been completed. Our thanks to Arke builders for their hard and contentious work to completed this project on time and within budget. You will have probably noticed our improvement work at the pavilion and we intend to carry on throughout the building. The next stage is the main hall to included the doors and the floors and decorating, bringing our building right up to date in the 21st century. We have had very successful Enviro days supporting the” Love where you live campaign”. Volunteers have joined in with Tickhill Town Council and Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council reaching the parts where every day cleaning is impossible to do. With a few friends and equipment it is surprising what fun you can have doing such on onerous task. My thanks go to Margaret our clerk for organising these and also the refreshments, and to the many volunteers for their part in this work. We must not forget the residents and businesses that clean their property boundaries, as we say every little helps and which leads me to our own volunteer cleaner, Councillor Nigel Cannings, who is proving very successful in this position. He was asked by the council to study and report on this position but it has gone much further than that by taking it on and to that we are very grateful, not only for the street appearances but also for the cost he is saving the community. As mentioned in last meetings news letter we are planning another fun day event in 2014. Our first meeting will be on 9th Jan 2014 at 7.00pm in the 70 70

Tickhill Town Council - DECEMBER 2013 Pavilion. If you feel you would like to be part of the organising team please feel free to join us at this meeting. As a council we do have quite a lot of phone calls and letters which we do answer, however we do receive letters unnamed and unsigned. This is disappointing as some of the content is very important to us and to Tickhill, and as well as acting on the content of the letter we would like to respond to the sender often explaining the situation. We can keep it confidential if that is your wish, so please when phoning or writing leave your name and address. May I take this opportunity to thank you all for your support to the council in 2013 and wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year. What a year for Tickhill Cricket Club! St Mary’s Kathie Mason. T
On the senior section the first team reached the Mick Savage and Council cup finals, and in the league won the division one title to gain promotion to the premier league the top tier for cricket in South Yorkshire.
The second and third team’s both missed out on promotion by three points. So a good season all round. The junior section that is of course the future of the club had an excellent season. The under 9’6 came runners up in the league and cup and had several players selected to play for the Doncaster Area side. The under 11’s showed great improvement as the year went on and had 2 players selected for the Doncaster Area side. The under 13’s with only 4 older players in came third in their league and lost in the semi-final of the cup. We now come to the allconquering under 15’s. Because we had so many it was decided to run two teams this season, the older 76 76

boys in the traditional Doncaster league and the younger boys in the Bassetlaw league. The Bassetlaw league side won their division and reached the cup semi-final, with some outstanding performances along the way, Charlie Morris taking 5 wickets for no runs off 4 overs at Clumber being the best of the bunch. The Doncaster league side won the league and the cup losing just one game all season and ALL the players made telling contributions along the way, to bring home their first trophies as a team. We now turn our attentions to next year with winter nets staring Feb 2014, and more importantly we are on the lookout for someone to run the under 9’s side for the 2014 season. I can assure anyone interested in the post, they will not be thrown in at the deep end our Junior Cricket manager Paul Foster has no direct responsibility for a team next year so will be available for guidance and help if required.
