Welcome to

the AUGUST 2014 edition

I am Summer, come to lure you away from your computer... come dance on my fresh grass, dig your toes into my beaches. - Oriana Green As I write this the school term is close to an end and thankfully summer seems to be with us. While these magazines are being printed I will be heading off with a large group of friends for a weekend in the Peak District, staying in a Youth Hostel. Several outdoor pursuits are planned including a bit of walking, sightseeing and swimming in an outdoor pool as well as sometime just enjoying the summer so fingers crossed for lots of sunshine. Last month I mentioned how busy the end of term would be for me, with the many extra demands on my time as well as getting these magazines to print. A local business sensing that it could also be a stressful time for me, kindly invited me into their salon for a reflexology session. Julie at Scandalo in Tickhill, turned out to be an accomplished reflexologist, and I enjoyed a relaxing hour, which was not only a stress reliever but also gave me an insight into aspects of my health to be mindful of. Thank you very much to Julie and the team at Scandalo, I can thoroughly recommend booking in for your own reflexology experience. The September issues will be delivered to you late August. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 1st August. No, this isn’t a misprint – it really is the earliest deadline ever! Much the same as the last couple of summers I would like to take a couple of weeks off during August, while my children are enjoying their school holidays, so the closing date has been set very early so that I can get the magazines to print and then enjoy some relaxation time. Apologies if this does cause you any inconvenience normal midmonth closing dates will be resumed in September!

Enjoy August and I will be back in a months’ time with your September magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Acoustic Music Nights These have been held on the second & last Tuesday of each month, at the Scarbrough Arms, Tickhill since Spring 2005. On the 24th June the room was filled to capacity with about sixteen musicians, as well as those who just came to listen. There was a diverse range of music which included classical, traditional, sixties, folk, country and blues sung & played on acoustic guitar, keyboard, wind instruments, fiddle, ukulele & harmonica – perhaps I missed something! The atmosphere was great and everyone enjoyed a good time and a good laugh, although respect and quiet is always shown to anyone who is performing.

Buttercross Needleworkers The meeting on 6th August is a demonstration of silk scarf painting which will extend all our skills. Then on the 20th August we are exploring how to use the patchwork blocks that we have been making over recent months. We will also have time to make some progress with our UFOs – in needlework terms that means our ‘UnFinished Objects’, the projects that we haven’t quite got round to finishing yet. Visitors are welcome; our meetings start at 7:30 at the Scout Headquarters in St Mary’s Road. T 4

community This year, Year 6 went on a PGL adventure to Caythorpe Court in Lincolnshire the week after SATs. On the first day we spent some time in Clumber Park before heading to camp! We spent four nights in tents spending the days participating in a variety of challenging activities. Overall, we had a great time despite the wet day!!

Year 6 go to Caythorpe Court

These are some of the children’s reviews: “PGL was awesome because we had a campfire. It was funny because I fell out of bed because my mattress tipped up and the tents leaked.” Connor Bluck “I enjoyed the time at Clumber Park because I got to make my own little hideout. My favourite activity was the High Ropes because I think I overcame my fear of heights.” William Taylor “My favourite bit was when Mrs Towner fell in the water, raft building.” Grace Rowbotham “I really enjoyed PGL because it was fun to spend a week with my friends.” Hannah Mickley “There was nothing I didn’t like about PGL. I enjoyed the Giant Swing, the Climbing Wall and the food!!” Matty Hall

Year 5 Residential Go To Whitby In June Year 5 set off on their Residential visit to Whitby. Bags were packed, exciting activities planned and the best pack lunches in our rucksacks, even the weather seemed to be on our side. .. Having arrived in Whitby we explored the town. We were very keen to see if we could identify the places mentioned by Robin Jarvis in his book ‘The Whitby Witches’. We were amazed at how many places we recognised even in the drizzle. The afternoon was spent rock pooling in Robin Hood’s Bay. We split into three groups and between us we found a star fish, periwinkles, limpets and lots of crabs. In the evening we walked out of the Youth Hostel to find a figure dressed in black waiting for us. It was the Whitby Story Teller. She told us many tales and stories of the town. Of the man swallowed by a whale who lived to tell the tale and the black hound that haunts the streets. Then it was back to the Youth Hostel to dream of ghosts and magic. Wet, wet, wet! That is the only way to describe the next day. Through the pouring rain we could see that Robin Hood’s Bay is a lovely little fishing village with small houses bunched together on winding, narrow streets. A place steeped in smuggling history. The afternoon found us fossil hunting in Saltwick Bay. By now we were soaked and not just from slipping into the rock pools! We 10

cheered ourselves up in the evening with a long walk and a visit to the arcade where we lost many, many two pence pieces. Our last day arrived too quickly and still the rain fell. A look at the RNLI Museum and the modern station today made us appreciate the bravery and selflessness of these people in risking their own lives Despite the rain, we really enjoyed our trip to Whitby, spending time with our friends, shopping for mementoes having midnight feasts and keeping the teachers awake! In such a short time we have created some wonderful memories.

Estfeld Summer Show–

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe

As the Summer term drew to a close our Y6 class took the lead roles in this year’s production – The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The whole of KS2 were involved as the supporting cast and the children played to packed houses for three nights, receiving much acclaim. Based on the novel by C.S Lewis, the play had magic, mystery and suspense. The children played their parts extremely well and we are sure that there are some actors to look out for in the future amongst them. We are very proud of all of the pupils involved and really do need everybody to put on a good show – all 123! It takes some nerve to perform for an audience 140 and this achievement is all the more special when one considers that they are all between 7 and 11 years of age. Well done to everybody – pupils, the staff who helped along the way as casting directors, musical directors, costume assistants, make-up artists amongst other roles, and our audience – families and friends whose support we appreciate.

points wasn’t the teacher, it was a boy called Bailey with an amazing score of 59 points! We asked Mr Roberts how he felt and this is what he said: “Personally I thought it was the best activity there.”

On the 19th of May Year 6 pupils went on a residential to Kingswood in Staffordshire for four and a half days. In that time they had a great time, overcoming their fears and doing things they’ve never done before. One activity they did was the zip-wire. It wasn’t easy to do because some children were afraid of heights but those that did it thought it was amazing! What made everybody feel joyful was when their teacher Mr Roberts flipped upside down! Another activity the Year 6 did was archery and it was fantastic. The person that scored the most 16

The last activity we are going to write about is called flash dance and it isn’t some dance activity – no, it’s an animation creating activity where people had to take hundreds of little pictures and use music to create a short video. We asked some of the children how they felt about the week and this is what they said. Rebecca said, “It was great because I didn’t have to worry about school and SATs.” Liam said, “I felt it was really good and I really want to go there again.” On the last day the Year 6 packed everything then they waved goodbye to Liz, who was the person that had looked after them for the four days. Then after 3 long hours, they were back home but had something to remember for their whole lives.

community This year is flying by and so much is happening here at the Sanctuary. Our annual dog show took place on 6th July and what a terrific day it was. The weather was so kind to us and the sun shone all day. Everyone had so much fun showing off their beloved pets. Having picnics and enjoying the BBQ . A very big thank you to people that manned stalls and baked cakes. Also everyone that came along to join in the fun. It was a brilliant fund raising day and it was so moving to see lots of dogs that we had re homed looking happy and healthy, it makes all our hard work worthwhile . Also a big thanks to some new volunteers particularly Heather who has had Tom bola stalls at a couple of gala’s in Doncaster and Maureen who has helped on street collections. Thank you also for people that take the time to turn up regularly come rain or shine we couldn’t carry on with fund raising without you. I’m not sure if everyone is aware we also have a charity shop on Retford Road, Manton, Worksop which is open for most of the week now thanks to new volunteers. It’s a lovely little shop selling well priced ornaments, jewellery, gifts and much more - it’s a little Aladdin’s cave. If you’re looking for something different why not pop down and take a look.

Getting onto the Sanctuary now, our new building work is coming along wonderfully and we are all getting excited about our new reception after having such a small space to work in previously this looks like the prince of facilities. We will soon be planning where to

Finding a forever home arrange desks and furniture not to mention the odd resident dog or two so we are all getting rather giddy. We must apologise for the inconvenience our building work has created it seems as though we have been living on a building site for ever. However when you are a charity you have to earn the money before you can spend it, and it takes time, but we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel, thank goodness. We have lots of lovely dogs and cats here that all need loving homes and a second chance, so please if you are looking for that special pet to share your life please come along to speak to us we will give you all the help you need. Whether you are interested in fostering one of our older dogs or just want a chat about which dog or cat would be suitable we are here to help. Everyone have a great summer but please don’t leave your most treasured best friend in a hot car or without water on sunny days. Please call us on 01302 711330 and leave a message someone will call you back or 07969 203206. We will look forward to seeing you soon.

My owner died and left me all alone. There was nobody in the family who could take me in and no neighbours to care for me. I felt so unloved. Its no wonder that Im a little grumpy at times !!! Sally loves people but certainly not other cats or dogs. That way she gets all the fuss! She desperately wants to be friends but reads the signals wrong sometimes!! A home where she will be allowed the freedom to chose when she wants fusses would suit her best as she is not a lapcat.

Frank Male May 2014 6 Months Possibly Yes Yes

Frank was rehomed with his sister, Stevie, as a kitten and has been very happy there. Unfortunately their landlord has changed his policy with regard to pets so they have sadly had to return to Mayflower. Frank is the more confident of the pair and is always the one looking for fun (or trouble!!) He is also very affectionate and purrs like a tractor when he finally stops for a cuddle Frank and Stevie are very close and must be rehomed together. Have you room in your hearts and home for this adorable pair?

DRIVE AWAY THE PAIN! Nearly 2/3 of workers commute by car which over an average week can add up to a significant number of hours, increasing the risk of musculoskeletal problems like back and neck pain. Workplace assessments are now more common with an increased awareness of work station ergonomics. However, the correct set up in a car can also have huge health benefits in terms of improving posture and minimising risks of aches and pains. Both people and cars come in all different shapes and sizes so it will take a little time to achieve a ‘best fit’. Work through the following checks to optimise your position in your car… Raise the seat as high as is comfortable to ensure maximum vision of the road.

Call on 01302 511755 or email info@blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk Blizard Physiotherapy Limited, Bircotes DN11 8DE

Move the seat forwards until you can fully depress the pedals whilst maintaining slightly flexed knees. Have the angle of the back rest at about 20 degrees from vertical – you should have contact with the seat up to shoulder height whilst being able to hold the steering wheel with slightly flexed elbows. Check the lumbar support ‘fits’ your spinal shape. The head rest should be at a height just above eye level sitting about 2-3cm from the back of the head (this minimises the risk of injury in the event of a collision) Your hands should be positioned at ‘10 and 2’ with both hands in place for spinal and muscular balance. Remember our bodies are designed to move - you should aim to break for a stretch and a stroll every 2 hours.

Doncaster Choral Society is immensely indebted to the incumbents and church authorities at each venue for the warmth of their welcome. Dr Lindley, one of Britain’s most popular concert organists, has given similar recitals on TOCCATA TUESDAYS over the last three summers and has visited some of the finest churches in and around Doncaster and raised over £6,000 for Doncaster Choral Society funds.

Dr Lindley says: I am really thrilled, once again, to be able to give a further series of concerts in support of the great work undertaken each season by the enthusiastic and committed members of Doncaster Choral Society. The Doncaster Choir is one of the jewels in Yorkshire’s musical crown and it is a real pleasure, as well as a privilege, to be able to work with these wonderful singers on a regular basis in rehearsal and concert. The Society deserves all the support that can be mustered to assist it in its laudable endeavours. T 38

Local Businesses support the YESSS Tickhill Grand Prix On 24th August Tickhill will again be transformed into a Racing circuit for some of the top Cycle Racers in the UK. Between 12 noon and 9.00 pm the roads will be closed and the village will be awash with colour with barriers, flags, banners, big screens, commentary and approx 500 riders contesting the 8 exciting Races. A great day for all your family and friends. To organise such a huge event does not come cheap and the majority of the credit goes to the event's title sponsor YESSS ELECTRICAL, a nationwide company with over 90 branches including Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley, Mansfield & Sheffield. Richard Stoodley, organiser of the YESSS Tickhill Grand Prix, said he could not thank YESSS ELECTRICAL enough but he has had amazing support from local companies too. "Some of the local businesses have been fantastic" said Richard, "They have seen the efforts we are putting in and also recognised that promoting sport, health and Tickhill together in one event is worth getting involved in" "We have such a diversity of sponsors all getting involved at various levels, and we would like to thank each and every one of them but it is the combined support has allowed us to achieve our aspirations and we are also offering one of the richest prize funds in UK Cycling - local support really has put Tickhill on the Cycling map" 44

Garden View

Native but Nice! With a huge array of colourful plants available from garden centres, expertly sourced from around the globe, we are continuously spoiled when it comes to choosing new plants for our garden. Fabulous flowers and tropical foliage can bring an incredibly lush feel to a garden, but don’t overlook the natural beauty of our native plants just because they’re right outside your door. The most obvious British wonders are the beautiful old Oak trees, flowering cherries and mixed hedgerows, even the invasive cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) looks great en-masse in spring, but when it comes to plants deemed ‘garden worthy’, consider the traditional (and modern) use of tightly clipped Yew, Holly and Box which has been favoured for generations. Beech (Fagus) is another popular hedging variety, often selected for its beautiful autumn and winter colour and again, it’s one of our natives! Many of the plants native to the UK flower in spring, such as the sweetly but delicately scented primroses. Then there are the triking red poppies which adorn the fields midway through the year. Wild, hardy Geraniums grow in the most unlikely places and are very happy naturalised in grasses, proudly showing off their ‘Chelsea purple’ flowers. 46

TICKHILL TODAY

The stunning blooms of Pulsatilla vulgaris (pasque flower) are perfectly displayed over foamy foliage and are low growing and very well behaved (perfect for the modern gardener). Their hairy seed heads also look fun long after the flowers have faded. May and June is showtime for the foxgloves whose tall slender stems carry beautiful purple and white spires of flowers which will seed prolifically and brighten a dull corner. Take care if you have small children though as foxgloves are poisonous if ingested. The Asian moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) are popular houseplants, but our wild orchid is a plant to treasure. Often found in woodland settings, the purple flowers lurk around on the cool and shady forest floor. For a similar native, more easily available to buy and worth planting this month, look for Colchicums or naked ladies … so called as they produce their flowers well before the leaves appear. The bulbs are quite expensive individually, but quickly bulk up if happy, and will very soon provide you with a flower that will become an interesting talking point. Commonly known as the Autumn Crocus, it does seem strange to see it in flower in September, but it has to be one of my favourite native bulbs.

Using native plants can also mean a higher rate of success, even in our variable climate, so if your fingers are not so green, it’s harder to kill these plants they’re born survivors!

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee .

We have some HUGE achievements to share with you this month. ALL of our customers on our current Mindfulness for Weight Loss Programme have done amazingly and we have seen some fantastic results.

At the time of writing there have been five matches played since the July magazine went to print so this report will concentrate on the results to avoid running out of space.

Cup Semi-Finals Monday 30th June Friday Fruitcakes 112 for 3 after 12.5 overs beat The Oak 110 for 6 Monday 7th July The Ancient Juniors 97 all out beat Tickhill Farmers 86 for 6

Pat Inglis (58) who is also a regular in our DanceFit classes has managed to lose 1 1/2 Stones in 10 weeks. Here she is receiving her special achievement award from us. Well Done Pat!! Another amazing success story is Joanne Hall (34) who has lost an incredible 16lbs in 8 Weeks. Fantastic Joanne. We were so sorry to hear that Tickhill Juniors recently had a break in and had lots of the tuck shop supplies stolen. As a local charity, who currently teach at St Mary’s School, Tickhill, St Joseph’s school, Rossington and Hayfield School, we very much support and encourage any local groups encouraging children to exercise. With this in mind we decided to ask our customers to make small donations to contribute to helping them restock the tuck shop. It was particularly important to us to help ensure they have supplies of drinks. In the recent warm weather it is vitally important that children who are exercising keep hydrated. In 1 class alone we raised £28 and here is what we will be donating to them.

Due to demand we have decided to run a skeleton timetable during the summer. The following classes are currently available to book. Tuesday 10.00am Tickhill Scout Hut - (19th Aug, 26th Aug, 2nd Sept and 9th Sept.) Tuesday 6.30pm Hayfield School - (dates as above) Thursday 5.30pm Blyth Memorial Hall. (21st Aug, 28th Aug, 4th Sept and 11th Sept) Thursday 8.00pm Tickhill Pavillion (dates as above) Friday 5.30pm STWCC (22nd Aug, 29th Aug, 5th Sept and 12th Sept) Please email us at moveandinspireme@icloud.com or call 07788262783 to book you place. Don’t forget to keep an eye on our website www.moveandinpire.me.uk for additional classes in the coming months. We will publish our Autumn timetable in Septembers magazine so please look out for that. We are hoping to add Yoga to the timetable for the autumn term, if this is something that interests you then please email us on moveandinspireme@icloud.com or comment on our Facebook page and let us know if you have a preferred location or time for these classes so we can bare this in mind. Of course details of all our current classes are on there too, including our 2 new classes at Sir Thomas Wharton Community Classes that are now up and running on Friday evenings. The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery (Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.) Thank you to everyone who shared their comments, views and suggestions with us at the very hot and Sunny Tickhill Gala on July 5th 2014. We would like to reassure everyone that anonymity has been maintained and all of these have been passed to the Medical Practice. We were pleased to speak to so many patients, to receive suggestions for change and to have interest in joining the group. The comments questions and suggestions fell roughly into the following categories:• Difficulty in getting an Appointment including when using online-booking and the Telephone System • Procedure for getting test results. • Reception. • Positive comments and praise. • The Out of Hours Service. We were fortunate to get most of our input from groups who we don’t normally access i.e. teenagers, adults who are working, and carers. Whilst also receiving some feedback from the retired members of our patients. Very many thanks. Responses and feedback will be shared as soon as we have it. As promised we continue to keep you informed about appointments not attended. For May these were Tickhill 98 did not attend which is equivalent to 25 hours and for the Colliery 75 did not attend which is equivalent to 18 hours. 56

Tickhill . . .

. . . but not TODAY

July and August are normally quiet months for the History Society but, this year particularly, behind the scenes much is going on. We did exhibit at the Tickhill Gala at the beginning of July – thankfully in the dry – and at about the time you read this, Saturday 26th July, we will be holding our annual Local History Fair between 10.00am and 3.00pm in the Library. This was announced in last month’s Tickhill Today so this is only a reminder of a free family day when you will be able to see a number of new items not previously exhibited. 60

TICKHILL TODAY

However by far the biggest behind the scenes activity is preparation of our new book “Tickhill – discover its past” for publication in September. At present we have reached the proof reading stage after which the text, complete with photographs will go to the printers. Even then our work will not be complete but there will be light at the end of the tunnel! More details of the book and its contents, where and when it can be bought etc will be contained in September’s “Tickhill Today”.

By the time you read this we will be well into the summer holidays and all looking forward to a new year at school. I must add at this stage (end of June) that the Christmas arrangements have already started. We have met with the supplier of the Christmas lights and the road closure applications have been sent to D.M.B.C. As a matter of course could I please remind you to keep hedges cut back? I know we are in the growing season but I am receiving complaints of pedestrians not being able to access the footpaths, causing them to have to walk on the road. I have also had contact from the Police about residents parking on the pavements and not on drives. There is to be a crack down on this in the next few weeks by the police. Anti social behaviour is to be addressed also with a zero tolerance so if you see any such behaviour please report it on 101, we must work together to eliminate it. There have been several arrests for drug offences so if your children 62

Tickhill Gala News...

Genna Harword I would like to say a HUGE thank you to everybody who participated in this year’s Gala. I would like to mention the Gala Team; Carolyn and Kevin Welborn, Clare Middleton, Delia Smith, Joan Rainbow, Graham and Sue Harrop, Pete Ogilvy, Jackie Cain, Bev Smith and James Criddle. As well as working hard to make the Gala a success they were a great support and a lovely bunch of people to work with. Bob and Pam Kitchen were still working behind the scenes, organising the licences and the floats, which were brilliant and I believe Bob’s ‘make a fridge magnet’ activity was a great success on the day. Thank you both Those who marked out the field on Friday night (in the rain) and turned up at 7am to finish off (in the rain), the ladies in the pavilion making and selling refreshments, and all the stewards and programme sellers all did sterling work. Special thanks to Ernie, David and Carew. Paula and the Tickhill Today team were great as ever, letting us place monthly

Oliver Neale updates and putting together the Gala programme. KSM displayed posters, handed out stall and bake-off forms, collected fees, sold raffle tickets and programmes, on top of running the shop! Thank you so much for being such a great supporter of the Gala. Local businesses, Tickhill Town Council, stall-holders, mums and dads who created the floats, KJ Walton and Polypipe, who provided the lorries, all the fabulous drivers, the police, the performers and people who ran attractions and everybody who bought a raffle ticket and programme. All of you helped us raise a massive £6,000 this year for Tickhill Scout and Guide Association. It takes a lot of planning and hard work every year, so if you’d like to be part of the Gala Team for 2015, please contact us, we would love to have you on board. Get in touch via our ‘Tickhill Gala’ Facebook page, or email tickhillgala@yahoo.co.uk It all starts again in September!

New PRO for Tickhill & District Lions This is my first venture as the new PRO or Public Relations Officer for your local Tickhill and District Lions and I wanted to discuss communication as it seemed an important place to start! I've been having a good long think on this and started by wanting to 'push' the social media side and webpage of our Lions club being one of the younger members, to modernise our approach and so I shall. But then I thought a little harder and realised I was missing something, my Mum brought it to my attention when I told her what I was doing and it really hit home when she quite firmly explained that " I don't do that internet thing! I don't know how to Facebook , I don't even have a mobile phone and I prefer to write a letter thank you!" That reminded me that there will be a good number of the readership of this magazine in exactly that position. So with that in mind I would like to remind you the reader that we are here as a group of around 40 likeminded volunteers, raising money and giving our time to help good causes within our community and around the world and that you can see what we are about in a number of ways, modern and more traditional. We have a webpage 'tickhill-lions.com' which contains a great deal of information on what we do and how we can help. You can look us up on Facebook, just search Tickhill and District Lions and 'Like' our page, that way we can

keep you up to date with what we are doing in your area and elsewhere. You can read our feature each month in this magazine and I will endeavour to keep you up to date with our exploits, activities and efforts to help. You can contact is in a number of ways too: email us at contact@tickhill-lions. com , by telephone on 08449 632462 or you can write to us at Tickhill & District Lions, 1 Heather Close, Tickhill, Doncaster DN11 9UU. So something for everyone I hope. You will see us supporting local events and raising money where we can so take the time to ask us what we do, you may be more than a little surprised by just how much work and support is put into the local area. I look forward to getting to know you all just a little better over the next year.
