Welcome to

the JULY 2014 edition

“Teachers plant the seeds of knowledge that grow forever.”- Author Unknown Another school year is coming to end, exam periods are over (great relief in our household) and many children enter a period of end of term concerts, awards evenings, sports days and other end of year activities. For our family, it brings the end of Primary School as my youngest moves on to join her brother and sister at Secondary School in September. I am sure that if previous years are anything to go by there will be tears shed in church on the last day of term by pupils and parents alike! What will I do in September, when after 12 years I have no more morning and afternoon school runs to do? No more Primary PTA and the end of my term as a Parent Governor will also have been reached. I am very sure I will still find my time filled – (before any of you rush forward with other suggestions!) The August issues will be delivered to you late July. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th July. The busiest week of my month dealing with all the community content and advertising that pours in around this deadline coincides with the last week of term, together with many of the activities already described – please help me to ensure that I don’t miss out on these activities, and get your contributions in on time (early would be fantastic!) – thank you. Please be aware that the following month the closing date falls very early in August, so that I can take a period off work to spend time with my family during the holiday period.

Enjoy July and I will be back in a months’ time with your August magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Polished performance wins Christine a Bronze award! Christine, who runs the Tickhill Slimming World group has been given the ‘Bronze’ status by the national slimming club because of her success in supporting 80+ local slimmers to reach their dream weights, improve their health and change their lives. The accolade is awarded to Slimming World Consultants who successfully build a vibrant and dynamic group of around 50 members, and when the service they provide is so good that members keep coming week after week because they’re losing weight beautifully and wouldn’t miss their weekly group for anything. She says: “I am delighted to have received the ‘Bronze’ award on behalf of the Tickhill group. I feel passionately about helping people to transform their lives by losing weight in the same way that I did when I lost 5st with Slimming World in 2011-2012. Losing weight made me feel happier and healthier and gave me so much more confidence. I became a Consultant because I wanted to share that feeling and help other people to achieve the same success I had myself. Seeing the members in my group – mums, dads, grandmas and young people too – reach their target weight is so rewarding and receiving this award is just the icing on the cake. “This award belongs to the Tickhill group’s 80+ members. They’re the ones who make the group the success that it is, with their fabulous commitment, the wonderful support they give each other every week, and, obviously, their impressive weight losses while following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan. To join the Tickhill group, which is held every Thursday at 5:30pm & 7:30pm at the Parish room, either pop along or give Christine a call on 07825 686437. T

On 24th May we held a traditional afternoon tea on the Parish Room. It was very popular and raised £305 for AFIA, an MU Sheffield Deanery charity that helps to send local families on holiday at the seaside. At this month’s meeting we heard about the valuable work carried out by the Doncaster Salvation Army to help families and young teenagers in need. This work is partially funded by the proceeds of their charity shops. On Tuesday July 8th it will be our AGM at 2pm in St. Luke’s Chapel. Refreshments will be served. Our August meeting will be ‘Tea at the Barn’, an opportunity to socialise and enjoy a lovely garden. Kathie Mason. T

'Neat and tidy' or colourful and a bit wild? At a recent conference which I attended there was a speaker from an environmental charity which was a new name to me, Landlife. I had, however, heard of their National Wildflower Centre on Merseyside, which was a millennium project.. Landlife was set up about 40 years ago by a group of graduates from Liverpool University and works mainly in urban areas to create better places for wildlife and people. They started out working on derelict plots of land in and around Liverpool, converting them into wildflower meadows; they also transform those neat and tidy areas of green carpet which are widespread in towns but contribute no other colour and do nothing for wildlife. This made me think of our town. There are plenty of manicured plots of grass, which never show so much as a daisy. Last summer, in Sheffield, I witnessed the most astonishing display of glorious colour in patches of wildflowers on the steep slope between the railway station and Park Hill flats. You can see the same transformation now on some roundabouts. No one is suggesting that areas used for play should be anything other than kept well mown, but what about such patches as the grass between the Cricket Ground and Sunderland Street? Does it all need to be so tidy or could it blossom? Such change will not take place overnight. Tickhill Town Council tried, I think, a few years ago to transform the Mill Field into a wildflower meadow but failed because the soil was too rich. It is just beginning to change itself with Cow Parsley in blossom this year. Landlife tackled similar areas by stripping off the rich top soil, selling it to cover the cost of the work, and then sowing seeds successfully. This is just an idea, floated to see what other people think of having some places in the town where wildflowers can flourish and their colour light up the season. If you like the idea, talk to those who might be able to do something about it, like our councillors. John Hoare T TICKHILL TODAY

Our Library As many will know, our Library will transfer to being a Community Library during the summer. A committee has been formed and we are planning for a similar service to continue, being run by a team of volunteers. Volunteer training is already well under way, and more people to come on board will always be welcome. (Please express your willingness to help at the Library – next training sessions will be held in the Autumn.) We are very lucky in Tickhill to have the range of Library services we enjoy, and we look forward to a continuation (and development) of this. Watch this space! John Marsden (chair) 744142 T

& what’s going on - JULY 2014 HILARY

Rotherham’s roadside planting is in full bloom, and looks absolutely stunning. As you drive round the borough there is a mass of colour along the verges and on the roundabouts, red and orange poppies, bright blue cornflowers, plantain and my favourite weed – Dyers Weld. This scheme is in its second year, and will change and develop over the summer. It is a living art-work and statement of civic pride, and I would love to see this style of planting throughout South Yorkshire. The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery

Tickhill & District Lions Tickhill & District Lions are proud to announce that three of our members (Steve Radford, Martin Harper and Graham Mickley) will be taking the rest of the year off beer to raise money for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. They’ve committed not to let a drop of alcohol (beer or otherwise) pass their lips until 2014 is out, which for those of you who know these three is a tall order! Lion-President Steve Radford said “Some people run a marathon but for various reasons, mostly laziness, we can’t do that. So this is our equivalent. It’s going to be tough; but that’s kind of the point, and once we have the first few sponsors signed up there’s no going back as it’s all for a good cause.” The three are keen to point out that they’re not planning to turn into social recluses and will be out and about supporting their local pubs as much as ever. So if you see them, or hear a shout of “mine’s a lime and soda”, please give them your support and consider popping a pound or two in their collecting tin. Alternatively you can donate via their JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/yearoffbeer T 14

Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club. Long summer days and time to get done all those outdoor jobs you’ve been meaning to do all winter! Great for a week or two but very soon various muscles start to ache and you begin to wonder if this is really what retirement is about! Time for a little relaxation and what better way than by joining Probus, a local club for retired professional and businessmen – we interpret this definition fairly widely. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 10.00 for 10.30am at the Millstone Hotel. At each meeting we have a speaker and after the meeting many of our members can be found in the bar or having lunch. Sounds attractive? Come along as a guest one Thursday and see for yourself.

We meet each Wednesday in the Ragusa Drive Community Centre on Radburn Road, Rossington at 7.30.p.m. Men and boys from eight to eighty are very welcome and a warm and convivial reception is assured. An interest in singing and enjoyment of social appreciation is more important than actual singing talent. Please come along and listen to our practice, then join in if you wish to. It could be the start of an interesting and stimulating hobby. Please contact Allan Robson on 01302 860623 for more details if necessary. T 16

Tickhill Male Voice Choir Songs for a Summer Evening The choir performed a concert at Wadworth Community Centre on Saturday 14th June to raise funds for the “Yorkshire Air Ambulance”. Proceeds will also be shared with Wadworth Community Centre and Tickhill Male Voice Choir. The atmosphere was friendly and everyone enjoyed the music, which was ideally suited for summer entertainment. A variety of traditional and modern songs were performed by the choir, ranging from sentimental to amusing. There were also solo performances from members of the choir by George Boothman, Mike Thorns with guitar, Martin Lord and Chris Buley with guitar. The Choir has a considerable repertoire with music being selected specially for each occasion. We are professionally supported by our Musical Director, Gywneth Platts and Accompanists, Janet Skinner and Geoffrey Cox. Allen Mason, gave another enigmatic performance as Compere, providing some rather interesting and amusing information about the songs. The Choir performs concerts in the surrounding area at a range of venues including churches and halls, for various groups, organisations and societies, to help with fund raising and charities. We also aim to provide entertainment and enjoyment, and refreshments, sometimes cheese and wine, are usually included. If you would like to book the choir for an event or special occasion, you can visit our web site. Just use “Google” and enter “Tickhill Male Voice Choir”. Our next performance is on Saturday, 19th July, at Cantley Methodist Church, 7.30pm. This will be a joint concert with the “Doncaster Ladies Choir” If you enjoy singing, try an informal visit to one of our rehearsal nights on Mondays at 7.30pm, where you can listen and chat to some of the members. Smalls for All - It all starts with pants! Cherish Dress Agency in Bawtry will be collecting used, lightly worn bras and new pants for women and children during the month of July. We will be sending them to the Charity ‘Smalls for All’ who will take them out to various countries and contacts in Africa. Donating underwear may seem like a small contribution to make to countries with so many problems. But it makes a huge difference to the lives of some children and women. Apart from the obvious hygiene problems there is evidence that wearing underwear can actually help prevent the sexual assault of women and children. Yet for many, underwear is a luxury that they simply cannot afford. Girls who are lucky enough to have a place in school often miss 3 or 4 days a month due their lack of underwear. Smalls for All donates underwear in many ways through links with established charities; through hospitals that treat women with conditions like fistula; through IDP camps and children's homes and orphanages.

Novel Notices We are surrounded by notices; they advise, instruct, warn, threaten and sometimes even entertain. Here are a few choice examples: · Ears pierced while you wait. · DO NOT throw cigarette ends into this urinal; they are difficult to dry and impossible to light. · If you think this car is dirty you should try a night out with the driver! · On an electricity sub-station: Danger; Keep out: Survivors will be prosecuted. · In the rear window of a car: Please excuse me for driving too closely in front of you.

Smalls for you also aims to set up some grassroots projects with local ownership, focusing on initiatives that are sustainable and that put people in a better economic and social position.

· Thrashing will continue until morale is restored.

To find out more look at www.smallsforall.org and bring down your unwanted bras and some new pants to Cherish in July. T

· For able-bodied drivers occupying “Disabled” parking bays: OK - I’ll let you have my parking space if you will take my disability. · Headline in the “Parrots’ Weekly: Titanic sunk: no parrots hurt”.

community How fast is this year going? It seems to be flying by.

Finding a forever home

We all hope the flash floods will go for good as it creates havoc for everyone at the Sanctuary. The poor dogs don’t know where they are one minute they are happily playing or chilling in their kennels the next the heavens open and they are back inside to keep dry! Then again we are never satisfied.

We recently held our sponsored dog walk in Bawtry forest. It was a beautiful sunny morning lots of people turned out to walk with their dogs. After the walk everyone enjoyed a lovely cuppa and cake. We don’t have a total for the event as yet but would like to thank everyone for their support and making our walk a huge success.

Here are a couple of dates for your diary:

along well but the heavy rain doesn’t make it easy to stick to time scales! We have just collected 6 young puppies that are beautiful but not quite ready for re homing yet. But if you are looking for a puppy, or an older dog, kitten or cat please come and see us we will be happy to have a chat and point you in the right direction. We are at Narrow Lane, Bawtry and telephone number 01302 711330 or 07969 203206 We look forward to speaking to you.

The 6th of July will be our Scrufts Dog Show at The Recreation field, Tithes Lane in Tickhill. This is an annual event that we all love as we can once again say hello to lots of dogs that we have rehomed who come along to join in the festivities - with their owners of course! It’s a wonderful day out with lots going on so please come and join us. On the 20th July we will be holding a Tom bola at Doncaster Town Fields at their annual Gala. Getting back to what’s happening at The Sanctuary. We are still knee deep in building work but we hope it isn’t too disruptive. It’s coming

Stevie Female May 2014 6 Year Yes Yes Yes

Stevie was rehomed with her brother, Frank, as a kitten and has spent a very happy 4 months with her new family. Unfortunately their landlord has changed his policy with regard to pets and has refused to allow animals in his properties. Therefore they have had to return to Mayflower. Stevie is very close to her brother so a home together is essential. She is extremely affectionate and loves nothing better than to cuddle up on your knee. Have you room in your hearts and home for this adorable pair?

Hello I’m Bodie, I came to Mayflower from the local dog pound. When I first arrived at Mayflower the bones in my front legs were not growing properly and were bowed outwards....hence the name Bodie! They have now corrected themselves through good nutrition and gentle exercise. I am a very playful, loving, giddy Young lad that needs all the usual puppy training, for example toilet training, socialising and basic commands. I need a home that has plenty of time to spend with me as I’m always on the go and I love to play, with the right loving home I will grow into a beautiful young dog. If you would like to know anymore about me please don’t hesitate to talk to one of my carers.

CountrybyMarket Hilary Cartmel This article continues my occasional page on shopping and local sustainability. Many of you have already discovered and shop at the Country Market which takes place in Tickhill every Friday morning at 10 am sharp at the Methodist Church School Room, to the rear of the Methodist Church, and on a fine day out on the front car-park. This Market sells Jam, preserves, honey, cakes, bread, pies and baking of all kinds, eggs, craftwork, plants and cut flowers, fruit, vegetables and a very popular café. I have over the years bought delicious cakes from the market and from Taylors who stock their baking in the store. I still have Ruth Taylor’s plants flourishing in my garden from the time when I first moved to the area and the Market was held in the Parish rooms opposite Spar. What I didn’t know was how old this organisation is and what it means. I had assumed it was organised by The Women’s Institute, and I know I’m not the only one, and this is because it used to be. Now it is a separate Co Operative Social Enterprise. The idea for the Women’s Institute came to the UK from Canada in 1913 and organised local production and distribution of food in Country areas enabling WI members, pensioners and unemployed or disabled ex-servicemen to sell their produce. This began in Anglesey in 1916 during the food shortages of WW1 . The Market in Lewes has run continually for almost a century, it was set up in 1919. In 1932 the Ministry of Agriculture asked the WI to assist in feeding the nation and to help the unemployed during the depression. Having functioned for about 80 years as a part of the Women’s Institute , The Country Markets became a separate limited company in 1995. Over the years the number and spread of the markets grew Countrywide. Now there are 300 in England, Wales and the Channel Islands. In the South Yorkshire Area there are markets in Doncaster, Holmfirth, Penistone, Sheffield S10 and Tickhill. The producers certainly do not seem to be doing this work for a hearty living, but for the pleasure of making and getting some return. In 2005 the Markets across the UK had an annual turnover of £11 million. Presumably now it has increased considerably. Every producer becomes a shareholder by handing over ‘The King’s Shilling’. Today it is still a princely 5p to join, as it was in 1913. It may be a paltry sum now, but you 22

TICKHILL TODAY

could sell your life for the King’s Shilling at one time. And once you have joined you become a member of a Co Operative. Anyone over the age of 16 can join. All goods are sold together, accounted for, managed during the sale and a cheque issued at the end of the month for the sum of your goods less about 10% to cover costs of running the market (hall rent, insurance etc). All goods sold must be produced, made by or grown by the producer. No goods that are bought-in can be sold, the point of the Market is local sustainability which results in particularity to the area and fresh seasonal produce together with low or zero transport costs. The plants you buy you know will grow in this area because they were raised here, the cakes are delicious because they are fresh, the craftwork has been made by the person behind the counter. All goods are labelled with the producers name so any comments you want to make about the jam you bought last week, to discuss ingredients, your allergy control or to wheedle a recipe you can talk directly to the cook. All food handlers are required by law to undertake relevant food hygiene training. The customer can rely on the produce they buy being of the highest standard. The Markets consciously do not compete with local suppliers, but they aim to compliment what is on offer locally, perhaps by selling different varieties of produce and at a comparable price

Tenancy £££ Deposits

- don’t get caught out!

In the recent case of Superstrike -v-Rodrigues the court of Appeal gave a decision that could have wide reaching consequences for Landlords and Tenants.

Tenancy Deposits - don’t get caught out!

The case concerned a tenant’s deposit taken before the Tenancy Deposit Regulations came into force in April 2007 but where the fixed term ended after that date and the tenant remained. The court held that the periodic tenancy arising in these circumstances was a new tenancy so the Landlord should have protected the deposit and served the prescribed information. As a result the Landlord’s claim for possession failed.

We hope that the decision will be appealed to the Supreme Court to clear up the uncertainty about whether the case also affects deposits taken after April 2007. We can review your tenancy agreements and deposit arrangements to advise you on your options to make sure you are protected. For more information or to arrange an appointment.

Tickhill Family remember D-Day

George went with his Grandad to get the story first hand and seeing the area and historic sites in real life, he got a living history lesson. George also attended the service at Ranville Cemetery which was the first village in France to be liberated.

On 6th June 2014 Bob Stoodley, 90, was in a field between Escoville and Touffreville in Normandy that he landed in some 70 years previously, but this time rather than arrive by parachute he was with his son, daughter in law and grandson from Tickhill, Richard, Karen & George Stoodley.

Prince Charles and David Cameron who were attending the celebrations took time out to meet Mr Stoodley and his wife, Joyce, who lost two brothers at Dunkirk.

Bob Stoodley (from Chinley, Derbyshire) a veteran of the D-Day landings was a Pathfinder of the 22nd Independent Parachute Company and was actually deployed in the very first plane to drop Paratroopers hours before the D-Day invasion began in earnest, in fact D-Day for this Paratrooper started on June 5th 1944. He was 18 years old. His job was to lay Eureka Beacons which would guide in the main sticks of Paratroopers and Horsa Gliders who were to land about 10 miles inland from the main offensive attacks on the beaches of Normandy to attack key German strongholds. After successfully completing his part of the mission, Bob was injured by an explosion and taken prisoner by the Germans who tied him to the back of a Tank. Whilst he was being taken away for questioning the Tank was attacked and he was actually shot in the leg by the British. Bob Stoodley features as one of the 11 Paratroopers at the Pegasus Bridge Memorial Museum, but he is quick to point out that his mission was not actually involved in the taking of Pegasus Bridge which was carried out by the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry who arrived in three Horsa Gliders. The Paratroop Regiment were also the decisive force to taking the Merville Battery which could have pounded the allied invading forces and changed the outcome of the invasion if they had not been silenced by the heroes of the 9th Battalion. George Stoodley, 11 from Tickhill was very proud of his Grandad. George was taken on a tour of the area visiting different historic and important sites including the grave of his Grandad's friend Paddy O'Sullivan who followed Mr Stoodley out of the plane but was killed almost immediately on landing. Paddy O'Sullivan is buried in Touffreville as his grave is the only 'War Grave' in the village's small church as the villagers decided to 'adopt' him rather than have him moved to the Ranville Cemetry such was their thanks to the brave British Paratroopers who liberated their country. George's dad Richard said it was a very moving trip and that he was amazed by the locals who displayed British and American Flags everywhere. I was so pleased that 24 TICKHILL TODAY TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278 | www.facebook.com/todaymags

‘X’ MARKS THE SPOT. . . OR DOES IT? Patients often arrive at their Physiotherapy assessment with some idea of what is wrong… ”I’ve got Achilles tendonitis/runner’s knee/tennis elbow…” Not unreasonably, this conclusion is based on the fact that it is their Achilles tendon/ knee/elbow that hurts. However, for many patients, the pain they are experiencing in one part of their body is actually caused by a problem elsewhere. This is referred pain. Left arm or jaw symptoms felt during a heart attack is a familiar example of referred pain. Although the exact mechanism explaining this sort of pain remains unclear, pain scientists believe it is linked to the way we are ‘wired up’. For instance, the nerves from your Achilles tendon share the same route to your brain as the nerves in your lower back, and your brain can’t always tell the difference between the two. If you have referred pain, the onset of pain may be hard to explain – there is no memorable injury or significant change to your training schedule or workload, the pain may be hard to find – moving and poking the painful area doesn’t quite illicit the symptoms as you would expect (though the area may still be tender to touch) and ‘treating’ the painful area (ice, massage, stretches) doesn’t work. As experts in movement and function, Physiotherapists assess the human body as a whole (we could be thought of as human engineers) enabling us to find and treat the primary source of the pain in order to maximise pain free movement and function elsewhere. You just might be surprised at what we end up treating! Caroline Hennigan BSc (Hons) MCSP, HPC Chartered Physiotherapist Bizard Physiotherapy 26

TED ELLIOTT MILLENNIUM KNOCK-OUT COMPETITION

Tickhill & District WI

We started this season’s competition off with a match between the two pubs the late Ted Elliott was involved with, The Traveller’s Rest and The Oak. The Oak batted first and their first four batsmen all retired, Matt Kilvington (25), Lee Edwards (25), Will Harrison (30) and Max Brennan (25). It was not until the final over that Joe Senior took the only wicket to fall and The Oak finished on 139 for one.

At our June meeting Chris Cook gave a fascinating talk about Ethiopia. She also asked if anyone was interested in sponsoring a child and, if so, to contact her. If any members need to order bulbs please do so as soon as possible. A strawberry tea is to be held at Loversall W.I. on the 1st of July at 2pm and tickets are £5. Members wanting to go to afternoon tea at Mount Pleasant on the 23rd of July please contact Marie Sanderson. Our next speaker will be Christine Scott whose subject is making jewellery. This is on the 2nd of July at 2pm in the Parish Room when any visitors will be welcome. Janet Sully (742867) T

In response The Travs lost a wicket to the second ball of their innings, but with Steve Clayton hitting regular singles and both Dave Bottomley (28) and Joe Senior (26) retiring at the other end the scores were pretty even after 8 overs. The scoring slowed down as wickets were lost and whilst Dave Bottomley returned to smash a second 6 and finish on 38 not out the score finished on 124 for five. The Oak will therefore play in the first cup semi-final on June 30th but as we go to print their opponents are not known as the match due to be played on June 9th was postponed after the mid-day deluge which created puddles two inches deep at either end of the all-weather strip and a dangerously slippery outfield.

By the time you read this the first round matches should all have been played. The cup semi-finals will be completed on July 7th with the plate semi-finals on the following two Monday evenings. All matches start promptly at 6.30 pm. The two finals will be played during the afternoon of August Bank Holiday Monday (24th) Phil Thomas (744946) T

Wadworth Primary School Wadworth Primary: Maypole and Enterprise On Thursday 12th June, with the weather looking delightful, Wadworth Primary School carried on the Maypole tradition by dancing around the Maypole. The whole school (and Year 6 boys) followed behind the tractor that drove through Wadworth carrying all the year 6 girls, including the May Queen, Abigail. All of the May Queen’s attendants looked absolutely fantastic, putting a golden smile on everyone’s faces. After all the classes finished preparing for their dances, the whole celebration began with Year 6’s big entrance as the May Queen was crowned; when all seated in the shade of the trees, the dances began, starting with the Reception class. The phenomenal Year 4 brass band played between every two dances, until it stopped at Year 5, who successfully plaited the ribbons around the Maypole with no struggle at all!

Miss Spencer (an L.S.A at Wadworth Primary School) said, “I thoroughly enjoyed the Maypole especially walking around the village, I also loved looking around Enterprise at the outstanding things the different classes made!” Many items like cakes and refreshments were sold as well as the class creations and there were also other wonderful stalls such as face painting, guess the name and lots more. The Maypole raffle was a great success and the donations of chocolates, body wash/hand lotions, creams and other amazing things are now in good use! The Maypole and Enterprise was a memorable day for friends, family, pupils and teachers that watched or took part in these special events!

By Abigail and Hayley

The unique Maypole celebration ended with a spectacular balloon race which had 260 balloons in the race. The money from each balloon raised a lot of money for the school. All the classes from Reception to Year 5 stunned Year 6 and the crowd with their dancing. Taking place after the marvellous Maypole was enterprise, where each class were given £20 and they have to make a profit by using the money to buy things and create their own items. All of the children (and teachers) have been working extremely hard on their enterprise projects which were –

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution May 16th was Food Revolution Day! The day had been organised by Jamie Oliver to encourage schools and groups to get involved in making a healthy ‘Rainbow Wrap’, having fun and also helping to break a world record. The whole of St Mary’s School took part which involved watching and listening to Jamie Oliver’s instructions via a live web link. The children worked in mixed year group teams to support and aid each other in creating the wrap. “It was great fun! We worked as a team to make something that we could eat” (Anthony Y4). The atmosphere was utterly electric and everyone had an absolutely brilliant time working together. “I enjoyed grating the radishes, carrot, lettuce and cheese. We had to be careful not to grate our fingers!” (Chloe Y4). There were many reasons why this experience was a complete success. These included the children enjoying getting their hands dirty being creative, working with different children from other classes, using equipment that they did not use often and producing something that they could eat! We all thought it was brilliant! “We had steps to help us make it so we can try it again” (Elicia Y4) It was a phenomenal experience for us all and we all endeavour to be a part of other events similar to this one in the near future. Thank you to Miss Clayton for organising this for us.

Active Estfeld Summer is here at last and it’s all go at Estfeld. In the first week of the half term we took two teams to the pyramid cricket tournament. It was a super day and all played extremely well. There was some tough opposition and our A team were unlucky to be beaten into second place by only 6 runs. Our B team also played well, taking third place in their competition. Well done to them all. Only a week later our Year 5 rounders team won the pyramid tournament. They played very well and their fielding was exceptionally good and was key to their win. School now has a shiny new trophy to display and the team will go forward to the Doncaster School’s Final later in June. Congratulations, Year 5. Our Year 3 Class have been to a dance festival at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College, where they took part in dance workshops, including African dance and Bollywood. A good time was had by all. In the final two weeks of June the whole school has Sports Days to look forward to, whilst Reception and Year 1 will be having a picnic and Multiskills event at Tickhill Cricket Club. By the time we reach the end of term our Y5/6 pupils will also have competed in the hotly contested Golden Boot Football Competition – what a busy half term it will be. Watch this space!

Tickhill Horticultural Society The hall was completely blacked out for Gail Summerfield’s presentation of ‘The Twilight Garden’ on 29th May. With husband John managing the lighting effects she was able to demonstrate how the appearance of many plants may change dramatically when exposed to different coloured lights beamed at them in varying directions. In some cases the change was astonishing and a number of our members may be considering the introduction of lighting to their flower beds. The annual ‘Bring and Buy’ table included items from the garage of the late Jessie Watson – it is good to find an appreciative home for unwanted tools etc. and also raise funds for the Society.

Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan Silence doesn't mean that work has ceased! Readers will know that we have been delayed by the changes in advice from the Government; this meant that we had to take back the Neighbourhood Plan and divide it into two sections, the first covering aspects which go through the planning permission process, the second all other policies and proposals. This has taken some time but is now complete and the NP should be back in Doncaster Council's hands before you read this. We then have to wait (again) for 6 weeks before an independent examiner checks the NP to make sure it is all within national rules and regulations. Hopefully we will get the 'all clear' for our local referendum in the Autumn. John Hoare T

Maximus flora phobia true or just a tall story? I’m not quite sure whether or not this is an officially registered phobia, but it seems to be one I see people suffering from frequently, so I thought I’d invent a Latin name for it. Maximus (large) flora (plants) phobia, creeps up on people slowly and its more common than you may think. Maybe it’s not as serious as Botanophobia, the official phobia for people who have a genuine phobia of plants, but this pseudo-phobia is specifically related to selected members of the plant kingdom which grow taller than humans. I first discovered this was an issue when I planted a Rowan tree in my back garden at the age of 18. “How big will that grow?” my mum would ask me every spring, and each year I would reply with my standard answer “oh, not much bigger than that!” I’m not sure if it’s the fact that humans are generally control freaks and like to be able to reach the top of the plants (for maintenance I can only presume), if they feel over whelmed by the sheer size of a large tree, or perhaps are overly concerned about it growing too near to the house. 48

TICKHILL TODAY

There are ways to manage the growth of large trees and plants, such as pollarding (cutting off the branches to leave a trunk with a stumpy top), or ‘balling up’ as it’s known in the industry (the act of trimming shrubs into spheres). In my opinion both are hard work, and generally leave ghastly looking results, with the exception of topiary of course! A much better idea is to select the correct tree or shrub in the first place. If you have a border just 2 feet wide, plant a small shrub such as a Hebe that only wants to grow to 2 feet wide. A little research should throw up some good varieties. Trees such as Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ and Acer griseum, or Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ are ideal. Try Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ for a flowering cherry, or Crataegus persimilis ‘Prunifolia’ which will grow in any location and any reasonable soil. If you’re a plant-nut like me, then it will probably frustrate you when people over trim plants to within an inch of their lives, or hack bits off trees, making them look like alien forms. If you live with a ‘sufferer’ and as a last resort, you could try introducing a pause in your words, as a good friend of

mine did when asked how large the Eucalyptus in the front garden would grow …. “Oh, only four-tfive feet darling’. She actually got away with that one … until the following summer that is anyway!

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee. .

Yale University at St Marys On Wednesday 16th July in St Mary’s church we welcome WHIM ‘N RHYTHM, a group of fourteen Yale University graduates just about completing their World Tour. They are an A Cappella group – singing unaccompanied, and have a wide repertoire including Jazz and Frank Sinatra. The group includes Jean Nicholson’s granddaughter, hence the link with Tickhill, and we are very lucky to have this prestigious ensemble in our midst. We have local talent contained within the programme. Rather than tickets we are requesting a donation to be divided equally between the groups travelling expenses and St Marys Church. Light refreshments will be available. We have a great evening in prospect – it all commences at 7pm. You will be most welcome. T

I had hoped to be reporting after a successful “BIG LUNCH” but unfortunately it was cancelled at the last minute due to adverse weather conditions. However, we did salvage part of the day and the children who managed to get to the pavilion (Mums and Dads too) had a marvellous Punch and Judy show with lots to drink with biscuits. All other squash and biscuits will be used at the Diversionary activities in the school holidays. We will try to salvage the event and hopefully reschedule what we can for later on in the Year!!

sport

Local Businesses support the YESSS Tickhill Grand Prix As at the 11thJune, both our singles teams continue to do well. The Over 60’s team has played a total of six games and won 4. The Midweek League singles team has also played six games winning five and losing one. In the doubles matches we are performing less well with the Doubles League team only winning one of their five matches and the Over 60’s team winning three of their seven matches although they do enjoy a total aggregate score of 482 for and 488 against which leaves them 4th in their league.

at this delightful sport, (sets of bowls are available for you to use) please come along on any Tuesday or Thursday afternoon from 2 o’clock. The game offers fresh air and exercise with good companions and not forgetting the good fun - so please come along. If these times are not convenient please ring me and an alternative time can be arranged. Over the last few weeks, two ladies and one gentleman have “tried their hand” and, as a result, decided to join the club. So why don’t YOU come along and give it a try? The following are the home matches, which are held at the bowling green on Tithe Lane, for July. Spectators are made very welcome and light refreshments are available.

But it is not all about League teams – we are also a very social and friendly Club. As I have said in previous months, if you would like to try your hand

Tickhill Bowling Club As at the 11thJune, both our singles teams continue to do well. The Over 60’s team has played a total of six games and won 4. The Midweek League singles team has also played six games winning five and losing one.
