welcome to the FEBRUARY 2013 edition of Tickhill Today. “How do you spell ‘love’?” asked Piglet… ”You don’t spell it... you feel it.” answered Pooh. What a lovely quote! And so totally true. With Valentines Day coming up it got me thinking about love and what it actually means. Not just in the context of partnerships but also with people around us; our children and friends. It doesn’t take much to show someone you love them, and it’s your thoughts and efforts that go a long way. So even if you don’t have a special someone in February, just have a go at extending some love to a person close to you. As Piglet says, you don’t even need to be able to spell it. The next issue will be delivered from 1st March, anything that you would like to be included must be with me by Thursday 14th February – Valentines Day!

Best wishes, Paula x

The Snow Queen WADWORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL pupils last week witnessed an amazing production performed by Quantem Theatre Company. Based on the classical tale by Hans Christian Anderson, The snow Queen has been a world wide sensation for many generations and generations to come. This production was made by just three people and although there were only three people, they managed to play the roles of over 21 different characters between them. Here are some of the characters: Gerda, a loving village girl who cares about everyone and everything good, Kay, a kind-hearted boy who suddenly turns cold, and the one and only snow Queen, the cold-hearted queen who is willing to destroy anything that stands in her way. We really loved the fantastic costumes, particularly the snow Queen and the Crow. The staging arrangements were very well organized, as it allowed them to go behind the screen to change character between scenes. In our opinion, our favourite part was when Gerda threw her shoes into the river and stepped in. It was

School visit to Cusworth Hall

BEFORE CHRISTMAS YEAR 1 went on a school trip to Cusworth Hall as part of their topic, “There’s No Place Like Home”. The children had been waiting with excitement and anticipation for this trip and when we got there, they weren’t disappointed. All day, the children were able to take part in exciting activities which reinforced the work they had done in their topic. After the children explored the museum, they went for a walk around the gardens. When Hariss was talking to mrs robertshaw about their trip, he said, “We went to Cusworth Hall on a coach with all the people in Year 1. We went in the Church upstairs. We did washing up. We went to look at the statues.” Charlie also decided to share his experience with mrs robertshaw and said, “Yesterday I went to Cusworth Hall and I did washing and I went to the museum and I saw it. I saw the statues.” It’s quite evident that the children enjoyed the trip thoroughly. The children haven’t stopped talking about their trip and Lewis said “it wasn’t just good, it was AWesOMe!”.  12 TICKHILL TODAY

I HAVE JUST been reading my

entries for Tickhill Today during January/February over the last few years; over half of them refer to our annual ‘Chip Walk’. obviously, I know what the chip walk is, we have been doing them for over ten years, but how would I explain them to someone else? Traditionally, I like to do at least three outdoor walks with the Brownies, one in each term; the spring term is ‘The Chip Walk’, so called because we always stop at the chip shop on the way back to the scout hut. But more importantly it is about going out for a walk in the dark, in a safe environment, to give the girls a sense of adventure and a bit of excitement. The older girls know the route, the younger ones follow on and get caught up in the magic of a night time walk! This year we had snow, and as the main idea is just to get out in the dark, monday Brownies this year went to the fields behind the castle with the intention of building a snowman and maybe having a snowball fight. Unfortunately, it was the wrong kind of snow! At least for snowman building, but we had great fun making snow angels and having a snowball fight, with the majority of the snowballs being thrown at my husband, who had kindly come along as an adult! Poor man! (He thoroughly enjoyed it, and got a few good shots in himself!) The snow was turning to sludge on the Tuesday so Tuesday’s Brownies went for the normal walk, just as much fun, and they still managed to jump in quite a lot of muddy, sludgy puddles and throw a few snowballs along the way. We always put our order in to the chip shop so they are prepared and it is a military operation to get up to 18 brownies plus hardy volunteers fed with chips and the occasional sausage (‘I don’t want chips, Brown owl, can I have a sausage?’). This 14 TICKHILL TODAY

year the schools were closed on the monday, so I had several text messages during the day asking ‘Is Brownies still on, are they still going on the walk?’ The answer is always the same, ‘of course, and wrap up warm, the Chip Walk will go on!’ I am very pleased to report that I have had the offer of help from a fully qualified Brownie leader who has recently moved into the area. I welcome Hannah (snowy owl) to my team and as ever, I thank sam, Laura and olivia for their continuing help. Katy my other qualified leader is away on a training course for the next six

months, but when she returns we shall be a team of three leaders which will enable us to do so much more with the girls, so watch this space. Also a big thank you to the parents who came with us on our chip walk, your help is much appreciated. In February we will be attending an International Day in Doncaster with rainbows, Brownies and Guides from the Doncaster area. Clare Carr, Brown Owl 07780 703012 

Business unusual

TERRY GORMLEY, local entrepreneur and business growth advisor, has packed an awful lot into his life so far.

A former miner and Firefighter, Terry has used his skills and experience to found The Fire Training Academy - a company that delivers fire safety training to businesses, schools and organisations across the country. Terry then developed his communication, life and business skills by studying NeuroLingusitic Programming (NLP), reaching the ultimate levels of master Practitioner, Trainer and Coach. He has used a combination of all these to help him develop his businesses and raise thousands of pounds for his chosen charities; money raised in the most challenging of ways.

16 TICKHILL TODAY

As Terry says:

‘Taking yourself out of your comfort zone can bring the most rewarding results – learning something new is energising and inspiring. over the last few years I have sky dived, run several marathons including the New York and climbed to everest base camp. All these challenges have helped me focus on getting things done in all areas of my life, with the added bonus of helping in a small way some of the people and charities that inspire me.’ As a business growth advisor he now also runs the south Yorkshire branch of the entrepreneur’s Circle, a national network of business workshops; structured local meetings that combine action and aspiration with the emphasis very much on learning not networking.

For 2013 Terry will continue to help local businesses to move forward as well as his own, whilst finding the time to organise his next charity challenge – more important than ever as the recession has hit many charities and some are even struggling to survive. if you would like to find out more about The entrepreneurs Circle and how Terry can assist you and your business during 2013, please visit www.ec-southyorkshire.co.uk For more details about The Fire Training Academy visit www. firetrainingacademy.co.uk 

property touched up and the all those little jobs are done before you ask an estate agent to prepare a brochure. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, call in expertise for those jobs that you have been meaning to do for months but have felt that they were a little beyond your abilities. 3) see your home through other people’s eyes Be brave, ask your friends and family to cast a critical eye over your home, it will give you a good idea of how other people see your home. remember to listen and if possible act on their comments. Try to detach yourself from the house, and view it through the eyes of potential purchasers, remember you want to move on and the sooner you find a buyer the sooner you can do so. 4) show off your space wisely maximising the potential of each room is so important to show buyers how they can work for them. Clearing away toys from a lounge will create a

more relaxed area or taking a spare bed out of a box room and creating a home office or hobby room can bring tremendous benefits to potential buyers. Buyers need to be able to see how they would be able to use space – and not all of them have the imagination to see how it could look, they need you to show them. We trust that by following these simple tips, you will find the

inspiration you need to realise your dreams and make your home their home. ”We’re absolutely delighted to be able to announce that Bassetlaw’s first Bexpo will be taking place in may, as usually local businesses have to travel to cities for expo events of this kind,” explains Alison Leckenby from The Best of retford & The Best of Worksop. “Bassetlaw plays host to so many well respected businesses, so we thought it was about time they were acknowledged and celebrated right on their doorstep to show that we mean business here too,” Claire Weingaertner, of Focus Accounting, continues. Jon rogers of Createinn adds: “We’ve worked hard to make sure that free entry for visitors, reasonably priced exhibitors’ stands and a range of sponsorship opportunities means that there are a variety of ways that businesses can take part.” For more information about Bexpo or for details regarding visiting, exhibiting and sponsorship packages, please visit www.b-expo.co.uk

Celebrating 8 years of Today Publications . . .

i

know that many of you will have been readers of Tickhill Today since our launch in 2005, however many more will have joined our journey along the way and won’t remember the early black and white issues with just 24 pages. so as we approach our 8th birthday (Tickhill’s anniversary issue next month) I thought now would be a good time to reflect on the changes over the years and look forward to the improvements to come. I can’t quite believe that it has been 8 years since I came across the magazine publishing business opportunity and with Tickhill having just lost its newsletter ‘Tickhill News’ and I was looking for local work ideally from home, after returning to live in Tickhill with my young family. It seemed like the ideal time to launch ’Tickhill Today’. Like many people starting a new business I lost sleep in the early days worrying whether I was wasting my time and money. People told me that Tickhill News had folded because there was no money in it and too much work for a whole TeAm of volunteers. I met with a positive response when I started speaking to people and from the day that I nervously set out to deliver the first issue I have never looked back! rossington Today started a year later, and Bawtry Today a year after that. Harworth & Bircotes was a later addition when I was asked to take over the production of ‘village voice’ and redesigned it to fit in with the ‘Today’ brand. I think my husband thought I was mad as every time I got comfortable with what I was doing and how I could fit it into the month—I started a new magazine! For a long time I did pretty much everything myself; sold the advertising space, designed 22 TICKHILL TODAY

the adverts, wrote the editorial, sourced the local content, found regular contributors, and put it all together into a printable format. Not forgetting the admin of invoicing, chasing payments, completing vAT returns and everything else that comes with running a business. For the first 6 months we even went out and delivered all the magazines ourselves (we includes me, my husband, my Dad and anyone else we could rope in to help). over time I have taken on help along the way. Firstly and most importantly a team of distributors to help get the magazines into people homes. We now deliver to 15,700 homes every month—not something I could do by myself! The biggest and most recent change however, is the move to professional design of many of the adverts and the magazines themselves. I put this off for a long time but finally towards the end of last year the time was right to take the big step of letting someone else take on the design

The first ever issue of Tickhill TODAY March 2005 work. I remain in full control of the content etc. but someone else takes the strain of building the magazines ready for print and in giving them a far more professional style. so what changes are to come? Don’t worry its nothing too drastic and none of the local content that you tell me you love will be adversely affected! However I will be adding more articles, and having themed sections, kicking off this month with a gardening feature, a property feature and a recipe!. I would also like to reintroduce the restaurant review - what better excuse to try out some of the many local restaurants and eateries! If there is something else that you would like to see featured then do let me know.

I am looking forward to what is still to come with Today publications - I hope that you will join me on the next stage of the journey.

Best wishes, Paula x paula@todaypublications.co.uk | t: 01302 744278

Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan OPEN INVITATION TO all residents

– Neighbourhood Plan Consultation in the Parish room, Northgate, when you will have a chance to see the work done so far and to comment on the possible options for action in response to the issues raised in our initial consultation. Dates and times – Thursday February 28 (4 to 8pm) and Friday March 1 (9 to 12 am) Be there! We need to know your views before we move on to the next stage, when we will be putting together a draft of the plan our working groups are making good progress covering these broad areas – Traffic and road safety, Car Parking, Community Facilities, Heritage and Planning, environment and Flooding. each group has prepared a draft set out with the following sections: • Concerns and issues raised • objectives in tackling these concerns • options for action • Advantages and limitations of each option The working groups do not pick up every issue raised, some we will have to look at separately while others are outside our remit. There is more work to be done on all areas before the planned public consultation event advertised above. The group doesn’t claim to have all the answers, your views are important. At the same time we will be distributing a summary of work done so far to local organisations and invite them also to make comments. overall the aim is (obviously) to achieve the highest possible degree of consensus that we can across the whole community on the aspirations and policies for Tickhill. The Town Council will want a Neighbourhood Plan to which everyone (or at least nearly everyone!) can subscribe. We have one major advantage compared with a number of parishes 24 TICKHILL TODAY

in that there is no requirement in Doncaster’s Local Development strategy for us to allocate land for a specified number of houses or employment land. However, that doesn’t mean that the task is easy! on issues such as parking and road safety, it will be difficult to satisfy everyone while cost and land availability are the challenge where community facilities are concerned. John Hoare. 

This time his subject is ‘Troughs and trough gardening’ and he will be bringing plants to sell. visitors welcome. £3 Phil Thomas

New year resolutions ON OUR RETURN to school each

year we usually ask the pupils to set their own individual resolutions – something that they would like to improve during 2013. We ask them to think about resolutions not only for themselves but also for their class and for the whole school. This year our whole school resolution is to make our school a happier place in 2013. each class has had their own ideas and the school council has decided that the three most important things that we can do collectively are: To listen carefully to what others have to say. To share things with others; school property belongs to everybody. To be considerate; to remember our manners and to think about how our actions affect other people. These are things that we are able to do and should do all of the time. They are not difficult to achieve but they do require each and everyone of us to be thoughtful and considerate and to remember that whilst everybody is important, nobody

26 TICKHILL TODAY

is more important than another. We believe that everybody has a right to be happy and that we are all responsible in ensuring that this happens. Happy New Year from everybody at estfeld. 

Pet OF THE MONTH Name: Sex: Approx age: Good with dogs: Good with children: Good with cats: HERE AT THE sanctuary January seems to go on forever particularly when the weather is really horrid with snow and ice. All our residents have under-floor heating in their bedrooms with snug blankets and duvets. We also get through a massive amount of towels and our dryers are on constantly in the winter months. This also means huge electricity bills, which are a drain on our resources. Fund raising is always a priority, we want to be here for the future but without your help we will not survive. The people of Doncaster gave generously when we did our usual Christmas street collection. This took place the saturday before Christmas we met some lovely people and would like to thank everyone for coming to say hello. Another fund raiser took place at Ye old Bell Hotel in Barnby moor, Nr retford we organised a French Night which was lots of fun & everyone had a fantastic time. A big thank you to everyone that donated auction and raffle prizes, also Ilbello from Harworth for donating table decorations once again. Another fun evening is all set to go with a bang is a ‘Wild West Night’ (Cowboys and Indians). Bad Habits THOSE OF US who are

chronologically gifted, that is to say, older folk who are getting on in years, can look back and survey how times have changed over their lifetime. Lots of things have improved, or at least got more complicated, but one area strikes us as being in decline. This is in the drift towards being much more casual and relaxed about appearance. The cynic would say that people are more careless and untidy about the way they dress. Trainers have taken over from black ‘oxford’ men’s shoes,

carefully polished, or sturdy brogues. Anoraks have taken the place of Burberry raincoats. one seldom sees an overcoat these days. Denim jeans, sometimes frayed, patched or even with holes are more in evidence than neatly pressed, knife edge creased trousers. Woolly cardigans or jumpers take the place of tailored jackets. Ties have been discarded in favour of the open necked shirt. It has been well known for a long time, even from as early as 1600 when shakespeare in his play ’Hamlet’ arranged for Polonius to declare that ‘Apparel oft proclaims the man’. Later mark Twain added that ‘Clothes make the man’. It was put even more cleverly by an American physician and lawyer, Thomas Dunn english (1819-1902) who wrote: ‘The sense of being well dressed gives a feeling of inward tranquillity which religion is powerless to bestow’. How true that is! one feels different and better when smartly dressed. These observations refer mainly to the male, of course. The ladies take much more trouble to be tastefully dressed, neat and well groomed. There are clear signs that people do not dress up to go to the theatre or a concert these days. There were times when attending such events was an occasion that warranted a certain degree of more formal attire. Today it is common for audiences to be more casual, comfortable and informal. of course many people do dress up for special occasions like a wedding or funeral, a visit to a courtroom and especially for an investiture in the presence of Her majesty. If those writers are correct, and I believe they may well be, then there is a link between how well people dress, how they see themselves and how they behave. Perhaps we would see better manners, more respect and rather less unsocial behaviour if more of us took a bit more trouble over our appearance. Philip Mottram 

Garden View

A frosty reception AS WE PROGRESS through

the year our thoughts are drawn to spring. The days are gradually getting longer, though it’s hardly noticeable because the temperatures are still very cold. People think of February as ‘nearly spring’ but in fact it can be a much colder month than December or January at times. That said, the cold weather is just the stimulus some bulbs need in order for them to burst into bloom. Take the snowdrop for example: this tiny flower with its delicate head looks its best this month, especially when planted in large drifts. Galanthus (snowdrops) naturalise and spread quite rapidly when happy, and over 5-10 years will form the most beautiful carpet of white.

month and you’ll see what I mean. Choose a clear day when the sky is an intense blue. Take a waterproof rug to lie down on and see the world from the woodland floor, just like a snowdrop would. It’s a beautiful place to be (and to take photographs from). If it’s not frozen solid, the earthy smell of the humus rich soil is wonderful and there will often be a layer of crunchy leaves still remaining from autumn, partially decomposed which add to the aroma. When you get up close and personal with plants in this way it really gives you a chance to appreciate their beauty. Lift up the little nodding head and see the loveliness within. If you are inspired by these wonderful

scenes, now is the perfect time to buy and plant snowdrops, so why not add some to a tub, or plant a swathe by the front door? That way even when it’s icy outside you’ll be welcoming guests with a less frosty reception. 

Try and visit an open garden this

TOP TIPS

Other jobs to do this month include: CUTTING DOWN – I’m not talking about the post Christmas calorie intake, but about the herbaceous perennials. Chop them down now, as far as you can go so that the new shoots will be free to grow next month. HeDGe YOUr BeTs – overgrown evergreen hedges can be cut at the end of the month. Do one side this year and one in a couple of years time. It will look pretty awful 38 TICKHILL TODAY

until it re grows (in about 2 years) but it will be worth the wait. Compost all the waste you create in the garden, but remember to chop it up well. Consider investing in a shredder if you create a lot of bulky waste. You’ll be impressed with the quality of compost you can produce. Use last year’s compost to lay on the top of the soil around shrubs and roses (known as mulch).

Until next time, happy gardening,

Music Society’s December concert

IT IS TO BE EXPECTED that an

event close to Christmas should have a seasonal flavour and so it proved for Tickhill music society’s December concert. on this occasion the fairy on the musical Christmas tree was a return visit from Phillipa Thomas, the elegant, richly chocolate-voiced mezzo soprano with her regular accompanist michael Neaum at the piano. Traditionally at the Christmas concert the audience expects to sing a few favourite carols. With the soloist this year being a singer it was possible to sprinkle the audience participation items throughout the programme and this worked very well indeed. And what a varied programme it was, ranging from the expected extracts from ‘messiah’ and Bach’s ‘Christmas oratorio’ to more modern and less well known items such as those by Peter Warlock and michael Head. There were also Negro spirituals and the almost inevitable ‘White Christmas‘. The songs and carols from the audience alternated with piano solos vigorously played by michael Neaum, including mazurkas Nos. 43 and 45 by Chopin and three ‘Christmas Pieces’ by mendelssohn. The seasonal atmosphere continued

strongly during the interval with wine and tasty mince pies for refreshments and the bumper raffle ably organised by Gilian Harries. With introductions by the Chairman Adrian Hattrell the whole package formed a fitting, festive end to the first half of the society’s season. 

Welcome news from TBA TICKHILL BUSINESS ASSOCIATION (TBA) continue

to work collectively for the benefit of all who make use of our towns many and varied shops and services. They have studied the mary Portas report on healthy high streets and have identified key areas where improvements can and must be achieved. Tickhill has an abundance of free parking spaces. Unfortunately, these are not always available at peak times. The TBA are working with Tickhill Town Council and DmBC to improve availability of parking spaces for the use of residents and visitors to our town. The provision of Public Toilet facilities is another project that the TBA believes to be vital for Tickhill. The TBA have met with our local councillors and came up with numerous suggestions on how this can best be achieved. The old public toilets, close to the market place have been closed for a number of years and are in a very poor state of repair. The cost of refurbishment is not considered to be the best use of local rate payers money. Hopefully a solution has been found. The library currently has toilets which are available for public use but

Key areas for improvement are identified

the opening hours would need to be extended and signs installed for this to be viable. The TBA are therefore supporting our council in its attempts to secure funding from DmBC to be able to provide this service. The TBA website www.tickhill. org is a source of information not only about Tickhill but for Tick hill. Any future planned events can be promoted, free of charge on the site. Please follow the links for more information. 

For all of you that weren’t there and there aren’t many of you...you missed a grand night out...it was all happening at the Ukrainian Club in Doncaster – yes - I speak true - that was a great evening 5th January .... the club was stuffed to bursting with a very upbeat crowd who all turned out to support the album launch of rita Payne who were supported by steve Womack (Bawtry based comedian and singer-songwriter, who is always good value, very funny and very irreverent – well I really mean - rude) and the boisterous band ‘13 women’ whose name is a little misleading – they were in fact three blokes and a wash-board. rita Payne are one of the best things to come out of Doncaster in 2012. I say ‘are’ because they are a duo, like 13 Women, their name is a bit misleading….a duo in the style of the Civil Wars, Mumford and sons (Americana / Country / new folk?) watch out for them in the future – they will be playing The rock, Maltby in the spring.

His landscapes are full of strange, atmospheric and surrealistic occurrences, plus he works in beautiful colours. If you are in Leeds before 23 march it is worth a trip to the University Gallery.

Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - February 2013

DURING THE LAST few years

as Clerk to the Council I have been asked many far reaching questions, mainly relating to crime, dog fouling and parking. If you see any crime being committed, no matter how small, please report it. If the police are not informed, they cannot act upon it. A useful contact is Tickhill Bawtry sNT (safer Neighbourhood Team) on Facebook for all of those who have an internet link. The sNT telephone line is 01302 385338 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. If a crime is being committed please ring 999 or if it is less urgent, 101, is the number to call. Dog Fouling is another issue. If you are a dog owner or walker, please ensure you are responsible. If your dog fouls anywhere please pick it up the excrement, take it home if there is not a bin available and put it in your own bin. We now have in Tickhill a D.m.B.C. authorised officer, Cllr Cannings, who can now report incidents of enviro-Crime. This covers, Litter, Car Litter, Dog Fouling, Graffiti, Fly Posting and Fly Tipping. Litter is becoming a very much talked about issue too. D.m.B.C. does supply a litter picker for Tickhill, 5 days a week, and it is my immediate project to ensure this is done efficiently. However, please do not take this as an opportunity to drop your litter, if caught it carries a hefty fine. D.m.B.C. are to carry out random on the spot fines so beware - you have been warned! Parking is another issue. Please refrain from parking on foot paths and grass verges. If you have a drive please use it. Prams, push chairs and pedestrians have the right to use the foot path, not cars. Try getting together with neighbours and park on one side of the road if it is narrow. You may be surprised how convivial it could be. The one area of parking on grass verges which is of concern is opposite the Tickhill Fish Bar. It has a double yellow

line, it is an offence to park there and the grass is looking horrid. It is not a good welcome sight to our small Town. The Traffic Warden has been informed, so be aware it carries a penalty. many residents in Tickhill have signed the petition for 20m.p.h. speed limits to be instated outside schools and this looks very promising and could be up and running very soon. I hope this year you have enjoyed our Christmas lights. The contract with our previous supplier had come to an end so the Council decided to move on to a company called Christmas plus, and it has proved to be a successful move. The Council ran a competition, to guess how many lights there were in the trees outside the Parish room. There was one lucky winner who was presented with a small prize at the ever increasingly attended Carol service at the Buttercross on Christmas eve. There were 14,200 lights. Perhaps next year we can guess how many lights there are on the Dome. At this time of year my work is mainly centred on finance and budgets.

community Unfortunately as at the time of writing this I have not received confirmation from D.m.B.C. as to whether there will be local capping or levies on the Precept in the next financial year and these remain very much in the laps of our D.m.B.C. officers. our only source of income is from residents and lettings of the Pavilion. We have no contribution from Commercial rates. All their Council Tax goes to central government. on a final note I wish to mention the hard work which our Councillors have put in to the Community. Please remember they are not paid for this work and do what they do purely for the love of the Community. Please help them all you can. You may see over the next few weeks Councillors monitoring

the traffic and parking in Tickhill. This is work towards the Neighbourhood Plan. As you are probably aware we do have a Website: www.tickhilltowncouncil. co.uk and i can also be contacted by email: tickhillcouncil@gmail.com OUR CARETAKERS; Beth: 07591 179659 Jamie: 07591 179658 if you have any issues to raise then please in the first instance write to me at the address below or by email.
