welcome
B
to the JANUARY 2013 edition of Tickhill Today.
y the time you read this, Christmas will have happened, although at the time of writing I still have much to do before the big day! “Never set limits, go after your dreams, don’t be afraid to push the boundaries and laugh a lot - it’s good for you!” Wise words from Paula Radcliffe, in the Olympic year that is drawing to a close. So with 2013 upon us, take a little time to think about YOUR hopes and dreams. Put a plan in place to see if you can achieve them, just one step at a time and who knows where you’ll end up? And of course everyone in our magazine has had a dream at one point or another – starting their own businesses to support and serve local people is high on their priorities so don’t forget to support their dreams too by giving them a call if there’s anything you might need. Wishing you a peaceful 2013.
Best wishes, Paula x

Entertaining evening at Tickhill Horticultural Society
AFteR initiAL PRoBLeMs
with his projector our speaker Nigel Harrison demonstrated what an accomplished photographer he is by highlighting faults in his early work and advising on aspects of putting a picture together, avoiding the wrong background and creating the right lighting while never resorting to flash. Without us being aware of it, his flower photographs have featured in advertising and on the front cover of the programmes for the Harrogate spring and Autumn Flower shows for a number of years. It was an entertaining and informative evening. We all enjoyed Country market mince pies with our tea and coffee and the number of prizes donated to our raffle enabled a good number of our members to go home happy.
our January meeting is the AGm on Thursday 31st starting at 7.15pm in the methodist Church schoolroom. During the meeting speaker finder eric Brough will reveal what he has in store for us through 2013 and there will be an opportunity for any willing member to join the society committee. The second half of the meeting will be a social with free raffle and a pie and pea supper. Any members or prospective members not on the list for a pie should speak to Gillian Hill on 743317 to place an order.
The Horticultural society Committee would like to thank all members for their support throughout 2012 and wish everyone ‘Happy Christmas’ and ‘Happy Gardening’ in the New Year. Phil Thomas

magazine we have to record with sadness the death of two of our long serving members, Bill scollay and reg Barradell. Bill was a founder member of the Club in the mid 1990’s and reg was recently President. They will both be missed by many, not least by their families to whom we send our sincere condolences. on a brighter note we are pleased to welcome a few new members to the Club and we hope that they will enjoy friendship and fellowship within Probus – not to mention some interesting talks. Probus is for retired professional and businessmen and we meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at the millstone Hotel, Tickhill at 10.00 for 10.30am. Coffee is available on arrival and after the meeting many members enjoy a convivial half hour (or so) in the bar with some staying

Tickhill & District Lions update CAn i stARt by wishing you all a Happy New Year and saying a big thank you to everyone who supported our grand Christmas draw which was held on the 11th of December. To the companies who provided prizes, to the many people who donated items for the draw, to the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell tickets, and of course to all of you who purchased the tickets – thank you! If you were one of the many lucky winners then we’ve probably already been in touch, but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale. During December we helped santa visit over a thousand homes within the Tickhill & District area and gave out hundreds of Christmas cards. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations. At Tickhill & District Lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs, so you can be sure that every penny you donate will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year. so thank you once again from Tickhill & District Lions and from all of the people that your donations will help!

A moving story of success for local estate agents RoBinson HoRnsBY, has for more than 12 years been one of the areas top selling agents and offers a full residential property service, including sales, lettings, mortgages and surveys. With branches in central Doncaster and Tickhill, the company also owns and manages eLr estate agents in sheffield. Throughout the property ‘boom’ many estate agents opened for business hoping to benefit from a fast moving market and easy sales. However, with the slowdown experienced over the past 5 years, many of these companies have disappeared whilst the more established and experienced agents remain. The key to remaining strong in these challenging times, is to have experienced and able staff, who have the knowledge to work hard to achieve results, in even the toughest of economic conditions. At robinson Hornsby, we are fortunate to have a very settled team of staff. As well as the excellent experience within the business, all the staff live locally and really know their ‘patch’, which is paramount to giving good advice to both buyers and sellers alike. As 2012 draws to a close, we can reflect on another tough, yet satisfying and successful year. The market is by no means ‘buoyant’, but we have managed to agree sales on over 200 properties and we also look after around 250 landlords. sales figures are similar to 2011, however, reviewing the available statistics, it appears that overall transactions in the area are down by between 5 and 10%, so we have acquired a larger market share. Prices are relatively stable, but the upper end remains challenging with prices struggling to hold their own. What will 2013 bring? Well, we always hope for improvements, but unless there are significant changes in the economy, a more realistic view would be to expect more of the same. A recent 16 TICKHILL TODAY
report suggested that prices may return to their 2007 peak in 2019. Although this may be a depressing thought, especially for those who bought at the top of the market, at least we have seen some stability over the past couple of years. Houses are selling, and as long as the price is realistic, and you have the right agent on your side, selling your home shouldn’t be as difficult as you may think. As with all businesses, estate agencies cannot afford to stand still. Traditional methods of marketing, and the historic reliance on newspaper advertising to find buyers, is slowly but surely changing. The past 5 years has seen the Internet take over in terms of people searching for homes, and social media has started to play its part. At robinson Hornsby, we have invested in promoting both our Facebook and Twitter presence, as well as developing a new and more informative website. Although the large brand property portals are important, it is also essential for the estate agent to have a good, easy to navigate website. our site attracts well over 30,000 visits per year and is an essential part of promoting your home, whether selling or renting.
many of our properties, especially to the south of the town, are now featured on our eLr website. sheffield remains the strongest of the local markets, and the eLr website attracts around 100,000 visits per year, offering greater exposure to our properties, to buyers who may wish to look further afield for their next home. so, in spite of the doom and gloom portrayed in the news headlines, it isn’t all bad in the housing market. There are always people who, for one reason or another, need to move home: relocation, better schools, retirement, expanding family, downsizing, to name but a few. As for the rental market, for those first time buyers who aren’t buying, they may well be renting! so there is positive news for both sellers and landlords. FOR ALL YOUR PROPERTY NEEDS, IN THE DONCASTER AND SHEFFIELD AREA, PLEASE VISIT WWW.ROBINSONHORNSBY.CO.UK or WWW.ELR.CO.UKAlternatively call, (01302) 320222 or (0114) 266 0061.

mary’s school have been learning about Baptism in re. on Thursday 22nd November the Year 1 pupils visited the church as part of their re work. The children attended a baptism and were lucky to have a real baby. The ceremony was officiated (led by) rev Chris Betson. The children looked at the font, smelt
the baptismal oil and took part in a baptism. The children took on the roles of Godparents and family and friends. Afterwards they presented the baby with gifts and cards and had a party as a celebration. The children enjoyed the day and completed collages and written accounts.

GreenFayre Gifts & Homeware of Rossington has recently had the honour of winning the Sine FM Biz Juice award for 2012. Owner Julie accepted the award live on air early in December. Here Julie provides us with the background to the shops success and how it all started: GreenFayre began after finding ourselves repeatedly frustrated at the lack of inspiration on the high street - gift ideas for our friends & family had seemed the same, year in year out & we struggled to find something new that grabbed our attention and was reasonably priced. Prompted by the fact that we had recently become self-employed we decided to take the opportunity to look further afield and promptly fell in love with some beautiful products. Our first stock order of less than £200 was placed & we held an 'Open Day' at home in July 2011, to introduce friends & family to the Fair Trade, handcrafted items we had carefully chosen. Encouraged by their superb response, we embarked on the relentless journey to build GreenFayre, using every spare hour possible to promote our ever-growing ranges through social networking, monthly 'Open Days' at home, local markets and Craft/Gift Fairs and leaflet drops, as well as learning (very quickly!) how to build and run an E-commerce website. Amazingly, less than a year later, the first GreenFayre 'Bricks & Mortar' shop was opened in Rossington, and our customer base is still growing every week, both locally and through our website www.GreenFayre.co.uk and our Facebook/Twitter pages. GreenFayre is very proud and grateful to have just celebrated 6 months of trading from our new shop premises and with many more plans and ideas for growth, we are extremely excited at the prospect of what's to come. Our newest service is hand delivered, same day gifts Our aim is to provide a unique selection of products to make you 'ooh', 'aah' and smile, and with this in mind we have compiled a mix of carefully sourced gifts & homewares which are all as the GreenFayre motto states: Fair Trade, Handcrafted, Recycled &

We would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who was kind enough to vote for us in the Sine FM ‘Simply Fred’ BizJuice Awards. We are over the moon to be able to say that we won! Our trophy is now proudly displayed in store for you all to see! Visit us just off King Avenue in Rossington, to sample our mix of reasonably priced products. We look forward to welcoming you soon

ESTFELD
- Puzzle Day
Being ResiLient AnD
persevering, especially when tasks are challenging are very important life skills. At estfeld we always encourage our pupils to be independent and to persevere when tasks or their solutions are not immediately obvious. We encourage pupils to help each other, to work in pairs or groups on tasks when several heads may prove better than one. We teach them to approach tasks logically and alternate groupings so that pupils experience working with a variety of their peers. All of this of course requires good communications skills and teamwork, and allows pupils to realise that often in school as in life we achieve much more by working with others, rather than in isolation. on Tuesday 20th November 2012 we were visited by the Happy Puzzle Company. All pupils had the opportunity to work with pupils from a different class and were presented with a range of puzzles and challenges that really required teamwork, logical thinking and resilience; especially resilience!
26 TICKHILL TODAY
some of the challenges proved frustrating at times as the solutions could appear obvious but in actual fact were much trickier. our pupils worked together extremely well and enjoyed the opportunity to work with pupils from other classes. They learned much, but it didn’t feel like work – just a fun day. It is certainly something we shall repeat, as not only did the pupils improve their thinking and learning skills, they also learned something much more valuable. “Working together - we are greater than the sum of our parts.” To advertise CALL 01302 744278 | www.facebook.com/todaymags

Howards run for Bluebell Wood
it’s tHAt tiMe of year again when we’re all reflecting on the past year and looking to the future. It’s a time to focus on the changes we want to make and resolve to follow through on these by making our New Year resolutions. I’m sure lots of you reading this will have decided that 2013 is the year for you to become healthier and improve your fitness. At Bluebell Wood we know that this can be a battle, and hitting the streets at the end of a busy day can be a chore, however, running for your local children’s hospice could be just the motivation you need. Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice cares for local children who have a shortened life expectancy. By running for ‘Team Bluebell’ you could help us continue to provide this valuable service which costs £3 million per year and receives no statutory government funding. eleven-year-old oliver suffers from a rare genetic condition called smA type 2 and has been accessing the respite services at Bluebell Wood since it opened in 2008. oliver always has a smile on his face and loves football, playing on his Ps3 and spending time with his best friend Connor. During his visits at Bluebell Wood he became friends with Lilly. The very gorgeous Lilly who is six years-old visits the hospice as she suffers from Koolen syndrome which means she has severe learning difficulties, epilepsy, worsening visual impairment and deteriorating mobility issues. mum vikky says;“We come to Bluebell as a family for quality time as that is rare in our lives. “It gives us the chance to get a full night’s sleep as her endless medication and continuous therapy is taken over by the care team, and we know no matter what the future holds for Lilly they will always be there for us.” The children inspired International Football r eferee Howard Webb, who is a patron for Bluebell Wood, to dig out his running shoes and run for the hospice. Howard said; “I had a great time meeting Lilly and oliver and always feel very 30 TICKHILL TODAY
humbled when visiting Bluebell Wood. “The work they do is fantastic and I’m honoured to be a patron. They have inspired me to get my running shoes back on again to show my support and I’m urging others to do the same and help raise funds for this amazing place.” Think you’d like to join Team Bluebell? Why not sign up to a fun run, 10K or even a half marathon? our fabulous fund-raising team will be behind you all the way. They will provide you with inspirational stories, top fund-
raising tips, sponsorship forms and even a free Bluebell Wood running vest! Go to www.bluebellwood.org/running. php to sign up now or find out further information about local runs in the area, alternatively call us on 01909 517365. the interval and at the end of the concert. And what a concert! From the fluent and flowing Chopin ‘Barcarolle’ at the start to the monumental, patriotic ‘Polonaise Fantasy’ by the same composer at the end there was a wealth of wonderful piano playing on display. The fourth of mozart’s six early sonatas began with a lovely adagio and the idea of song permeated many other pieces that followed. schumann’s ‘romance’, a love letter in music to his beloved new wife, was followed by ‘Widmung’ a florid transcription by Liszt of the original song, the torrent of embellishments unable to mask the yearning and tender melody. The first half ended triumphantly with Bach’s organ-like ‘Chaconne’ elaborately arranged by Busoni. The second half, slightly changed from the printed programme, was all French music: impressionistic pieces by ravel and Debussy, Poulenc’s tuneful and not particularly sad ‘mélancolie’. and a soulful ‘Nocturne’ by Fauré. All these varied items were played with hugely impressive piano technique and sensitive interpretation, much to the delight and satisfaction of an appreciative audience. The incredibly high standard of music making in Tickhill continues. AGL

The MonDAY BRoWnies HAVe now all completed their
Communicator Badge. They learnt the phonetic alphabet, confusing a number of people in the car park on st. mary’s road by not letting them drive away until their number plate had been ‘done’. We talked about why the phonetic alphabet is important and had a lot of fun saying the alphabet in different accents! We played a new game about communicating through emotions which has become a firm favourite. The girls get into teams and get marks out of ten for how good they are at showing a particular emotion or feeling, they soon passed by ‘happy’, ‘sad’, ‘confused’ and moved on to ‘really need the toilet’ and ‘constipated’. The final part of the badge was communication through words and pictures, we now have some wonderful posters advertising Brownies. The two packs run slightly different programmes so Tuesday Brownies just have the phonetic alphabet left to do and then they will also have the badge. Well done to all the Brownies for their hard work! You can see the Brownie Badges on the Brownie Website; if you have the skills or qualifications to help with any please get in touch we love having visitors. The big event of this term for both Packs was a sleepover at magna with Brownies from Cantley, Auckley and Blaxton, in total 57 Brownies and 13 very tired adults! A big thank you to sian and Pat for coming with us to help make up the ratios. We spent the afternoon in magna getting very wet in ‘Water’, blowing up a quarry in ‘earth’, standing in a wind tunnel in ‘Wind’ and watching a fire tornado in ‘Fire’. After the military operation of getting 57 sleeping bags laid out in a room, making sure everyone could get out for the inevitable toilet trips in the night, we had a lovely tea of 40 TICKHILL TODAY

lasagne, chips and salad provided by magna. In the evening we made elephants out of milk bottles, and played a game very popular with Tickhill Brownies- market Day. The next day we took the sleep deprived girls (sleepover has been renamed stay-up over) out to the very cold and windy play park by magna to wake them up a bit before magna opened for the day. They then spent the rest of the morning back in magna with the girls going home after dinner. The Brownies all got a Brownie sleepover badge. It was a lot of fun for everyone involved, we are now looking at other places we can have sleepovers! Please do get in touch if you know of anywhere we can go. By the time you read this the Brownies will have been to see snow White at Doncaster Little Theatre, performed by CATs. They really
enjoyed High school musical earlier in the year and we are sure they will enjoy snow White just as much. In January we will be going on our annual Chip Walk down Water Lane, calling in for chips on the way back to scout Hut. It’s amazing to walk across the fields in the dark with torches, we normally stop for a bit of stargazing if the sky is clear. Please do say hello if you see us! We have a few 11th birthdays so we now have spaces on both nights for new girls aged 7-10. If your daughter/ granddaughter would like to come along and see what we do please do give us a call on 07780703012 or pop in during a meeting. If you would like to come and help at meetings, either every week or every few weeks please do call- the more the merrier!

seeMs oDD to be reporting news of our November meeting and not to be able to report on our December social in this January edition but that is the effect of publication closing dates. Never mind, it is the same for everybody and it does enable Paula to produce a cracking magazine. At our November meeting James Lomax gave an interesting talk entitled “Heiresses, Pious Widows and a royal Confidant”. This turned out to be a quick romp through some of our royal history showing how often weak kings and their heirs had been “guided” by strong women be they Queens, mistresses or merely courtiers. At the end of the talk we were left in little doubt that the female of the species was more 50 TICKHILL TODAY
cunning (and occasionally deadlier) than the male. Thank you James for an interesting talk and maybe a warning to our male members! our next meeting will be on Thursday 17th January at 7.30pm in the methodist schoolroom in Northgate. As usual visitors will be welcome. sylvia Atkinson (a Tickhill resident) will give a talk entitled “The second episode”. Those of us who were present at our may 2011 meeting may remember sylvia giving a fascinating talk about part of her quite extraordinary family history. In January she will complete the story and there will also be an opportunity to buy her book which has recently been published. It should be a very entertaining evening.

The rock Folk Club in maltby kicks off in its new guise with Folk for a Fiver on 11 January followed on Friday 25 January by local folk heroes ray Hearne and Ciaran Boyle. ray, one time steelworker has been writing and performing for many years, involved in amongst other things the BBC radio ballads. Ciaran, although living in south Yorkshire spent every summer of his childhood with family in Ireland where he learnt to play the bodhran. He and ray spark with fun, play together beautifully and for my money Ciaran will sing you a heart-rending Irish lament as good as anyone. one of the brilliant things about musicians playing local gigs is the friends and family that also make up the audience in this case its very noisy, supportive and there is plenty of singing – when Ciaran forgets his words the audience (AKA his mum) carry the song on ! Tickhill Town Council - January 2013 i Do HoPe you all had a contented
and peaceful Christmas and New Year. members of the management team from stagecoach were asked to attend a meeting regarding the punctuality of service 22 between Worksop, Tickhill and Doncaster following concerns raised by local residents. The team explained that service 22 is one of the busiest bus routes operating out of Worksop carrying 45,000 passengers every month. The route runs every 30 minutes during the daytime, monday to saturday, using low floor accessible buses with a limited evening and sunday service. since the latter half of 2011 there have been periods of extensive road works along Balby road and during the summer of 2012 there have been major road works in Worksop Town Centre, which have had an adverse effect. Despite the best efforts of staff, stagecoach management recognised that there had been occasions when bus passengers had been inconvenienced. During the period of disruption one Tickhill resident had written directly to Bus Users UK, a national agency working on behalf of bus passengers, to complain about the standard of punctuality on service 22. Whilst it was correct that some late running was occurring during the road works it was felt some of the general comments about the frequency of buses and comparisons to Doncaster bus routes were unfair. The Town Council raised queries about links to other places such as Bircotes, Harworth, Bawtry and sheffield. stagecoach recognised that there was a relatively small demand for such journeys and said that it was not possible to cover the cost of providing additional bus services without some external financial support. There were some difficulties with busy journeys during school term times to and from Doncaster, with increased passenger loadings in the morning and afternoon peak hours. These journeys
56 TICKHILL TODAY
were also regularly delayed as a result of the number of students being carried and the time taken for them to board and alight. In addition, the bus leaving Tickhill at 0907hrs towards Doncaster is often very busy with concessionary pass holders. In response stagecoach has arranged to allocate at Double Decker to the 0907hrs journey and look at running additional or bigger buses during the afternoon peak hours. Fares were also discussed at the meeting, and stagecoach confirmed that they were committed to keeping prices low for regular customers through the range of “mega rider” weekly tickets, which start at £10 per week. stagecoach encourage the Town Council and Tickhill residents to contact them if they have any comments or concerns about local bus journeys. Don’t Lose Your Home to Care Fees! With local authorities now able to recover care fees from individuals entering the care system, many elderly and not so elderly people are looking for ways to protect their estate, to pass it on to their children and avoid it being wiped out by care home fees. However, the concept of “deliberate deprivation” and the risks associated with any divorce and debt of the children receiving the home, means that simply giving away your home to your children is now generally not the best solution. Whilst entering a care home may seem a distant possibility, your current Mirror Wills leaving everything to each other and then to your children will not protect you or your home in the event that you do need to contribute to your care. Our local specialist Wills and Trusts Solicitors can offer you a number of other solutions including a Property Trust Will or Property Protection Trust. These types of trusts can be made by anyone who owns their own home (jointly or alone), who is in a good state of mental health and wishes to protect their assets. They can protect your home for your children or your surviving partner/spouse if you die before them or go into care.
The Property Trusts can: • Give your partner a right to live in your home for the rest of their life even if you go into care • Stop your home being sold to pay for care home fees • Still let you move house if you need to whilst you’re alive • Make sure your children or chosen beneficiaries receive the money from your house when you die • Make sure your children can’t sell the house or make you move out whilst you’re alive.
