welcome to the JUNE 2013 edition of Tickhill Today.
“Spring being a tough act to follow, God created June.” ~ Al Bernstein
June already! How this year is flying by. As I write this the sun is shining but as yet we have seen little sunshine this year, although the early May Bank Holiday Monday was a rare treat. This month celebrates the 100th issue of Tickhill Today. I find it hard to believe that the magazine has been supporting the local area, and supported by the local area, for so long. Thank you to everybody who has contributed in that time; by providing information and content, advertising events or businesses, or simply by using the local businesses you have found within the magazine. I hope you will continue to support YOUR magazine for many years to come. The magazine has seen some changes over the years, it has grown in size, the distribution area has increased to include Wadworth, Loversall and Oldcotes, it has become full colour and more recently become a little more professional in its design and layout. In the last month I have also sourced an exciting new supplier of articles and over the coming months I hope to include a greater number of articles that I hope you will find of interest. This issue sees the first article by ‘The Money Saving Expert’ himself Martin Lewis, and also our first ever Vehicle review – both of which, depending on your feedback could become regular features. A huge number of businesses have used Tickhill Today to promote themselves over the last 100 issues, and many, once they have joined us along the way, have never left – but just 3 have been in all 100 issues! You will find more details of these 3 businesses on the centre pages of this issue. June brings with it the longest day, Father’s Day and the commencement of Summer Fairs, charity days and family days. Look out for details this month and over the coming issues, for events around the area. Not only are they fun events, but also valuable fundraising opportunities for so many local good causes. If you would like to see an event publicised in these pages please let me know. Looking ahead to the next issue, July in Tickhill means the annual Scout & Guide Gala – this year it is the 40th anniversary. I would like to include a feature on Galas through the years – personally my first one was as a Brownie Princess in 1981! If you have any photographs from years gone by that you would like to share with me, then I would love to hear from you. I haven’t yet decided whether I will be sharing any of the photos of me on floats during the 80’s! The July issue will be delivered during the last few days of June, anything you would like included should be with me by Friday 14th June. Until next month….
Best wishes, Paula x

Advice on CCJs
from Jones & Co
James Murray of Jones & Co gives advice on County Court Judgments & how to avoid damaging your credit rating.
A CCJ is a judgment that a county court issues when someone has failed to pay money that they owe. CCJs are a simple way for creditors to claim the money they’re entitled to. The Register of Judgments, Orders and Fines records CCJs for 6 years. Banks and other lenders can do a CCJ check against the CCJ register when deciding whether to offer credit. Getting a mortgage or loan with a CCJ is difficult. Even if you get credit, you may end up paying a higher interest rate. The moral of the story is to react quickly to a judgment entered against you and be realistic about your chances of successfully setting it aside within 1 month when deciding whether or not to pay it.
For more information or to arrange an appointment
Nearly all CCJs go on the register.
Please contact:
james.murray@ jonessolicitors.co.uk • Never pay it: If you don’t pay it, it’s shown as unsatisfied.
• Remove the CCJ: The only way to remove a CCJ is to ask the court to set aside the judgment because you have a genuine reason to dispute • Pay in full within 1 month of the judgment: it. Be careful though – if your application to set The CCJ will be removed from the register aside is unsuccessful and is heard more than 1 month after the date of the judgment it will show • Pay in full after 1 month of the judgment: up on the register even if you subsequently pay The CCJ stays on the register but it will be it in full; the 1 month runs from the date of the recorded as ‘satisfied’. judgment, not the date of the hearing.

‘The Lions Wadworth Gala & Fun Day Abroad’
This month I thought I would bring you a bit of an international flavour. The Lions strive to help local communities all over the world.
First of all let’s take a trip to Massachusetts in America where a Lion club spent three weeks removing debris from the Miller River after trees collapsed into it after a major storm. After a lot of hard work the river was cleared making it a safe environment for river users and nature lovers alike. Moving on to Romania where, for the last 5 years a group of Lions have been arranging an annual camp for children with diabetes. The camp is a haven where the children can feel accepted. They have the chance to swim, dance, make crafts and importantly make
Forthcoming production at Bawtry Phoenix Theatre, Station Road, Bawtry. 9th - 12th July - The Young Players present Bugsy Malone by Alan Parker. This much loved musical is performed by the Phoenix Young Players, our popular and talented youth group. It’s a gangster musical enacted by children. Acted out before scaleddown sets, it details the career of Bugsy Malone, who rises to the top of the criminal ladder in 1920s New York. Tickets will be available from ‘Bawtry Bon Bons’ (next to the theatre) from June 10th. T 6 6

new friends. The Lions from Oradea raise funds through organising many events including concerts and dances. Moving swiftly on to Hungary another group of Lions in a place called Miskolc support a local guide dog school. Instead of the adopting the traditional method of fund raising for cash donations they took some guide dogs to the local pet store where patrons were encouraged to buy and donate dog food, tools and other supplies. Finally, moving onto the city of Oslo. The Lions created the biggest book sale in Norway since 1976. Forty five thousand books split into 30 categories were offered for sale. The proceeds went to many good causes including youth sports, scouts, outings for senior citizens and schools and orphanages in Ghana. If you want more details of any of these initiatives you can view the Lions Magazine at the following website. http://www. lionsclubs.org/EN/news-andevents/lion-magazine/index.php. HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”
APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.
“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.
Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Bike Race for Tickhill Continental style bike racing comes to the streets of Tickhill in September to launch Tfest.
Tickhill Velo Club in association with BikeBoxAlan will be hosting the race on a fast 1.3 km circuit based on Sunderland Street, with the start and finish outside the Scarborough Arms. Up to 100 riders will race for 1 hour in this inaugural British Cycling event on closed roads. The route takes in the Buttercross, runs back up Sunderland Street before a short technical section into York Road, Lancaster Crescent and Lumley Drive before heading back down Sunderland Street to complete one lap. The route gets the crowd up close to the action to experience the thrills and spills of this type of racing made famous in France and Belgium with music and commentary this will be a great spectacle. South Yorkshire has a rich heritage of bike racing with Tom Simpson in the 60’s to Tickhill’s very own pro rider Russ Downing today. With the success of team Sky and Bradley Wiggins and Le Tour de France coming to Yorkshire next year this is a great opportunity to be supporting the sport at a club level and hopefully creating an event to develop the stars of the future.
Soirée Française Hosted by Soroptimist International of Doncaster.
The race takes place on Sat 21st September starting at 11:00 and finishing at 12:00. Road closures on Sunderland Street and the minor estate roads will be in place for no more than 2 hours. I hope everyone will come out and watch the race to appreciate the effort of the competitors as they whizz round the circuit and that we can further add to our vibrant village life. Thanks to all our sponsors and supporters for helping make this exciting event possible. It’s going to be a great day! For more info go to www.tickhillvelo.com T

TOP TIPS on
De-Cluttering your Home Whether you are looking to move or whether you just wish to have a tidier more organised home, it is worth putting some time aside to sort through key areas within your home. Don’t despair; help is at hand with our handy tips to get you started on decluttering your home. 1) Start at the top, lofts are a key area for hoarding items, “just in case”. This is the time to be ruthless, there will only be a limited number of things that you keep for
sentimental reasons, but if you’re keeping it just because it may come in handy, think to yourself how long has it been up here and how many times have you needed it? 2) Break down the task into manageable chunks, targeting key areas such as children’s toy boxes or kitchen cupboards. Remember the idea is to dispose of unused or unwanted items. So be ruthless and if your children have out
grown some of their toys then its time let someone else enjoy them. 3) Box or bag up unwanted items and put them straight in the car to take to the local charity shop or tip. 4) Apply the 2 year rule, when it comes to your wardrobe. If you haven’t worn it in the last 2 years you’re unlikely to wear it again so bag it up for the charity shop.

Garden Party St Mary’s Church would like to invite you to the garden party at the vicarage garden on June 22nd starting at 2pm. We will have tasty refreshments and exciting stalls selling a variety of things from craft and cards, to games and flowers. Please do come along and support us. You will be warmly welcomed.
On May 12th, a special fundraising lunch took place in Tickhill, at the home of John Marsden, to raise funds for two women condemned as ‘witches’ in northern Ghana. This is their story. Until the night of February 9th 2013, Josephine Ayarum and her daughter, Katherine, had led a quiet life in the northern Ghanaian town of Bolgatanga. Josephine supported her family from her earnings as a market seller. Katherine was enrolled parttime on a teacher training course. “When the hammering on the door started, I knew something awful was about to happen,” Katherine recalls. “The house was surrounded. People were screaming that my mother and I were witches, and that we should be killed.” There is a widespread belief in witchcraft in Ghana, as in many countries. The vast majority to be condemned are women. Sorcery charges can lead to exile and sometimes murder. Angela Robson, a BBC documentary maker, was in Bolgatanga the night Josephine and her mother were rounded on. She met them, distraught and terrified, shortly after an uncle had managed to help them flee from their home. As their relative was already starting to receive death threats, Angela offered to help the two women get to Accra, the capital of Ghana, a ten hour drive from their home. Angela, who lives in Tickhill, is now hoping to raise funds for Katherine to complete her teaching training course, and to support Josephine in a skills re-building programme. 20 20

International Needs, a UK-based humanitarian agency with a country office in Ghana, with whom Angela has had a strong connection for five years, has agreed to coordinate the project. The situation has recently become more critical. Katherine returned to Bolgatanga on April 20th to try and retrieve her school certificates. She was attacked by the people who had moved into her former house, wounded and admitted to hospital. Through the generosity of local people in Tickhill, £450 was raised at the lunch. Huge thanks to everyone who came to the fundraising event, and to John Marsden who prepared such a wonderful meal. Ramona Holland, from the Danube Restaurant in Newark, very kindly donated two spectacular deserts. If you would like more information on how you can support Katherine and her mother, Josephine, please contact Angela Robson at: robson. angela@gmail.com. T
The Tickhill TARA enjoyed a fantastic day celebrating the Scarecrow Festival on Castle Close selling raffle tickets in aid of Marie Curie. There was also a very successful Tombola stall. Whilst this was taking place May Hardy and Marie Dickinson were busy selling jacket potatoes and cream scones. What a great day that they had. It was very tiring but well worth the effort. The Jumble sale was also taking place at the same time organised by Alice Newton. Well done to all. The TARA will be holding it’s AGM on the 29th May 2013. At the meeting will be a representative of Marie Curie to receive a cheque for £368.50. The Community Garden is also now well on its way with all kinds of vegetables planted. If you wish to join us we meet every Wednesday at 2.30pm in the centre on Castle Close. The gardens with raised beds are suitable for all abilities. You can even register your children or grandchildren and they can help sustain the gardens. Please note that all children must be accompanied by an adult. T

Probus visit to Parliment On Monday 29th April a party of members of Tickhill & Bawtry Probus and their partners set off on a coach trip to the Houses of Parliament.
We stayed overnight in an excellent hotel with great views of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London.
Early on Tuesday we set off for the Palace of Westminster where we were taken through both chambers – the Lords and the Commons – by a most informative and entertaining guide. As well as absorbing the atmosphere of the Mother of Parliaments, we all learned a great deal. Our trip rounded off with a visit to the Jewel Tower and some free time to wander at will before returning home. Everyone congratulated and thanked David Green for organising such a splendid outing. Our April speaker John Smiles described the problems he experienced last year in growing roses and sweet peas of a quality to challenge for prizes in shows around the country. Late flowering due to the cold, coupled with regular rain damage created a season of constant worry. By the end of an evening illustrated with an excellent range of photographs we were a lot more aware of the time and skill necessary to compete on the show bench. On Saturday 22nd June the St. Mary’s Church Garden Party will be held at the Vicarage starting at 2pm. A range of stalls will include one selling plants so come and see if there is anything you fancy. We will have our own plant stall at The Scout and Guide Gala on 6th July. Our June speaker on Thursday 27th is David Mitchell of South Milford, Leeds, whose subject is ‘Creepy Crawlies – How soils prosper and improve’. Start time 7.15pm There will be plants for sale. 93% of the responses voted “YES” to the proposal to replace the sand in the St Mary’s play area. We have received a full range of additional suggestions for other uses for the remainder of the Section 106 monies for which we thank you. Unfortunately, many of the suggestions fell outside the strict parameters that have been placed on this grant namely that it is to be spent on “Public Open Space and the wording in the agreement allows Doncaster Council to use the open space subsidy for the provision / enhancement of public open space within Tickhill” A full report and analysis of the documents received was presented to and approved by Tickhill Town Council and the report has been forwarded to DMBC so that they can place the necessary contract for the works Once again, many thanks for your participation Cllr Brian Keith T
volunteers have worked hard to produce this year’s colourful display. Although we have suffered fewer losses from theft in the last twelve months, vandalism is still a problem; the latest craze appears to be people cycling over the beds. We ask residents to continue to be vigilant; these are not victimless crimes.
This summer we will be planting mixed geraniums with “million bells” at the Buttercross which will be sponsored very kindly this year by Elaine and Stuart Millard celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. We are confident of repeating the colourful displays of previous years. Coffee mornings help to provide much needed funds for our summer and winter plantings. We had very successful coffee morning earlier this year in March and thank all those people who attended.T

HERE ARE MY TOP TRICKS TO SAVE MOTORISTS, BIKERS & VAN DRIVERS BIG BUCKS.
WIS MARTIN LE GET 3% CASHBACK AT PETROL STATIONS The Santander 123 (www.santander. co.uk/123) credit card pays 3% back on petrol spending (max £9 a month back), 2% in department stores and 1% supermarkets. It has a £2/month fee, but that’s easily covered for heavy drivers. Yet only do it if you’ll set up a direct debit to repay it IN FULL each month, or the 18.9% rep APR will swallow the gain. PRIVATE PARKING FIRMS CAN’T FINE YOU Tickets at supermarkets or private car parks may be disguised to look like fines. But, in reality, they’re just invoices, a claim you broke a contract with the landowner. Like any invoice, if it’s genuinely unfair, simply explain why and tell them you won’t be paying. The only way they can enforce it is by going to court. If that does happen (often it doesn’t), then a judge can decide. With official council tickets you can be fined. Yet, even then, if you feel it’s unfair, for example, if signage was inadequate, you’ve a right to appeal. So the next time you get that sinking feeling when you spot an unfair 26 26

Managing the cost of motoring demand on the windscreen, fight back. Full help and template letters at www.mse.me/privateparking. “IT’S A PAIN DOING INSURANCE COMPARISONS, BUT I SAVED £450 USING YOUR LIST” My system takes a little time, but it’s worth it — just think of it as an hourly rate. As @msticklemagical tweeted me: “It’s a pain doing comparisons, but I saved £450 on straightforward renewal price of car insurance using your list — result!” First combine comparison sites, as different sites search different insurers. To get the most quotes in the least time, use a few at once (do in multiple windows). For most people, www.moneysupermarket. com and www.tescocompare.com should do the trick. Then add www. aviva.co.uk and www.directline. com, two major players they miss. If you’ve more than one car, add Admiral Multicar (www.admiral.com). 20-YEAR-OLD SAVED £1,050 JUST BY ADDING EXTRA DRIVERS Young drivers can pay astronomical rates. Adding a safe second driver can slash your risk and therefore price. As one 20-year-old tweeted me: “£1,600+ on my own, £550 with two named drivers.” To find the cheapest, follow the steps above. If that’s still too costly, you can get in-car ‘black box’ tracking from the likes of coverbox.co.uk, co-operativeinsurance.co.uk and ikubeinsurance.com. With these, you either pay per mile or based on how and when you drive. Full help at www.mse.me/youngcar. GO ON A PETROL DIET Fuel is now an eye-popping £1.45/ litre on some forecourts and some predict worse on the way.
So try a trio of easy techniques:
• Ditch excess junk in your trunk,
remove roof racks and keep tyres correctly pumped to make your car more efficient, so you use less fuel. • The biggest saving (up to 30%) comes from simply driving less aggressively – smooth gradual acceleration rather than piling it on, being aware of your road position so you can slow naturally rather than brake, and changing into a higher gear earlier. Full help at www.mse.me/petrol • Don’t fill up just anywhere. Bash your postcode into www. petrolprices.com to find your cheapest local forecourt. JACK UP YOUR ROADSIDE RESCUE DEAL Use specialist cashback websites like Topcashback.com and Quidco. com. These work by giving you a cut of their cash earned for referrals. Sign up via them and incorporating the cashback, at the time of writing, you can often get AA basic for about £15 or RAC for £25 (cashback amounts change daily). If you want to stick with your existing cover, try haggling. In a poll on my site, 73% of AA customers who tried said they succeeded, like this MoneySavingExpert. com user: “Rang AA and asked to leave, now paying £57, not £115.” HAS YOUR LICENCE PHOTO EXPIRED? YOU RISK A £1,000 FINE Photo-card driving licences started in 1998, and while the licence itself may be valid, the photo needs renewing every 10 years. Those driving on expired cards risk a £1,000 fine - the update costs £20. Urgently check the end date (section 4b) and if expired, sort it.

community The Neighbourhood Plan is now really beginning to take shape. Within the next couple of months we aim to have a Neighbourhood Plan section on the Town Council website, where we will build up all the elements required for the formal stages of the Plan process. As we go along, we continue to welcome ideas and suggestions from local residents. We are also planning to be at the GALA in July – do come along to see what we are doing and discuss the Plan with us. This month, to give you a flavour of our current approach, I have selected the draft of one topic ‘TRANSPORT’. What follows is an introductory summary: “The Neighbourhood Plan recognises that transport has an important role to play in contributing to the sustainable development of the town and to the health and prosperity of its citizens. Tickhill is located at the intersection of two historically important routes, west to east from Sheffield to Bawtry and
28 28
Neighbourhood Plan
Lincolnshire and north to south from Doncaster to Worksop and Nottingham.. Currently the north-south route (A60) carries a significant volume of local traffic but less traffic than the east-west route which now links the M18 (Junction 1, close to M1) across to Gainsborough and Lincolnshire. Surveys conducted during the production of the Neighbourhood Plan demonstrated this. It has long been the wish of the community to reduce through traffic which contributes very little to its prosperity but adds to congestion and pollution. The projected construction and opening of a new road from M18 (Junction 3) to A638 at Parrot’s Corner will provide an opportunity for the west-east through traffic to bypass both Tickhill and Maltby and the Neighbourhood Plan will seek to achieve this. The public consultation exercise raised many issues of road safety. In particular there is a demand for more places where the main roads can be crossed with the aid of a traffic island or pedestrian crossings, for slower
traffic speeds especially in the vicinity of the two primary schools and within residential estates, and for action to reduce the perceived danger and delays at the crossroads at Tickhill Spital (A631/ B6463). Residents wish to retain free parking for town centre shopping, suggesting that there should be more short-term and less long-term parking available. With an ageing population, accessibility and mobility are important elements in transport policy.” Below this are the specific transport policies, of which there are currently 8 – strategic traffic, residential traffic, pedestrian safety, parking, accessibility for all, Spital crossroads, public transport and road verges. Each has a supporting explanation. Of course everything is still at a draft stage so please continue to feed in suggestions. If you have ideas on any aspect of the transport topic, either Brian Keith or Nigel Cannings would welcome them. John Hoare T

Tickhill Today Celebrating 100 issues!
A big thank you to everyone who has been involved, from the contributors to the graphic designers; our wonderful customers (without whom the magazines wouldn’t be possible), my proof reading and leaflet inserting husband, distributors; including my Dad, & of course our readers - every single person plays an important part in ensuring that these publications get out on time each and every month. I must also thank my children who put up with Mum being shut away in the study for hours on end particularly close to print dates! I never cease to be amazed at how important Tickhill Today is to the community, and the number of people who stop me to tell me how much they enjoy the magazines and how useful they find them. It plays a huge part in linking people together; helping local businesses to grow and providing people with a constant - something that provides a bitesized chunk of good old fashioned pleasure each month.
Here’s to the next 100 issues!T It’s not just businesses that have benefitted from Tickhill Today. Many groups & societies have used the magazine to raise their profiles and successfully grow their memberships T
In 2005, a small group of running enthusiasts got together in a pub one evening and Tickhill Running and Athletics Club – TRAC was born. They wanted a sociable club that catered for all abilities, and wondered whether it may reach 20 members, but with the help of the publicity in Tickhill Today, our membership is pushing 70 strong! Our Introduction to Running courses have given the chance to be able to run to over 200 people. Come and see for yourself, Tuesdays and Thursdays at Tickhill Cricket Ground at 7pm T
Readers have been very complimentary about the new look that has been developing since professional designers have been producing the magazines layout. I must compliment you on the new design and layout of Tickhill Today which is very impressive. It’s very s eye-catching and each article stand out brilliantly. Congratulations! K Doubleday Love the new look Magazine – it is most attractive and beautifully presented. Best wishes, R Robson
The quotation below is from March 2005 issue of Tickhill Today “Congratulations to Paula Mickley and her team for producing this first issue of “Tickhill Today”. The Tickhill and District Local History Society has one thing in common with “Tickhill Today”, both are new or fairly new organisations.” Now, 100 issues on Paula and her team deserve even more congratulations. Tickhill Today and the History Society have been mutually supportive with the supply of photographs, publication of appeals for help from time to time and most importantly the development of a popular history page in each issue. While there are a great many advertisers who have been with Tickhill Today for many years - far to many to mention individually. There are just 3 that have been in all 100 issues! It seemed only fair to give them a little extra profile this month!
CYNETIX Cynetix G roup would like go take this opportunity to congratulate Paula and the team at Tickhill Today on their 100th issue. Cynetix started in a small shop selling bespoke PCs from Buttercross service court in Tickhill under the name Engine Computer Ltd. Over the years we gradually and successfully migrated the business towards IT support, Programming and Website work. In 2002 we outgrew the shop and surrounding buildings in Tickhill and moved to where we currently operate at Aven Industrial Park in Maltby. Thanks, in part at least to the kind support we received from the strong community in Tickhill in our early years we now provide support and other work to companies in over 40 countries and around the UK. We don’t forget our roots though and we still offer a fantastic service to local businesses and individuals looking for professional IT Support & Web Design. T
HOMEWORKS Homeworks is very pleased to have been advertising in Tickhill Today in all 100 issues. Repetition builds recognition & reputation. Tickhill has been very good to me, and using Tickhill Today supports a magazine that has so much to offer to Tickhill and to village life. Homeworks opened in 1985. Tickhill is the perfect spot for my business. As a lecturer in design I made the move into retailing and over 28 years later I am still passionate about my role in helping clients to achieve their dreams. The shop offers two departments – an interior design service with full implementation upstairs, and a very wide variety of discerning goods on the ground floor. Interior Design is a huge and exciting field and HOMEWORKS caters for all types and sizes of jobs. Our client list is extremely varied and this is part of the challenge we enjoy. Our aim is to continue making our clients feel relaxed and confident so they can enjoy the experience of achieving change within their home. It can be a stressful business but not with HOMEWORKS by your side!. T
Best Wishes, Paula

Our Time to Shine Our SAT’s are quickly approaching, and we all are a little nervous, as we want to get the best results we possibly can! The teachers have improved us and pushed us to the limit- so we are best we can possibly be. We are eager to go into the hall with a smile on our faces and come out holding our head up high, knowing we have done our absolute best. We can’t wait to show off our skills to answer the tricky questions, as we are very proud of ourselves for coming over difficult hurdles in our learning. Our strategies have improved so much over the past 9 months, and we are also proud of one another. We want to show the government (who mark our SAT’s papers) that our class have faith in ourselves
and in others but most importantly, we have faith in our answers. We all know how important this year’s assessments are as we have a few new tests as well as the old ones to study for, therefore, we have put in more effort than previous years. The new tests for this years SAT’s are: • Grammar and Punctuation • The new type of spelling test We are looking forward to 13th May, but at the same time we are so surprised it has come up so fast. We look forward to July when we find out all of our hard work over 9 months has paid off enormously. By Alison and Hannah T

Garden View
Express Yourself At a time when I’m making preparations for my summer holidays and browsing through pictures of tropical locations, I can’t help but compare them with the images of England that I hold in my mind. It wasn’t until I visited America last year, that I realised how very English we are, and how we really do live up to the stereotype we’ve been given. I wouldn’t say I’m a shrinking violet when it comes to confidence, but I really did feel quite reserved. As a nation, I don’t think we’re very good at expressing ourselves, our thoughts or our emotions, and whilst I’m not advocating yelling at random people in the street because “your dust cart is blocking my parking lot” or applauding in the cinema (both of which I experienced whilst over there last year), I do think that when it comes to gardens we are, in the main, a little unadventurous. In
fact, I would go as far as to say that a striped lawn and three borders are as traditional as our Sunday roast! But fear not, it doesn’t have to be this way. Expressing yourself outdoors needn’t mean exposing your inner most secrets, but I do think your outdoor space should reflect your personality. The residents at Bestall Towers are generally neat and tidy (in fact clutter makes my head hurt), so my garden reflects this with its simple straight lines, well ordered borders, immaculate patio, and perfect lawn! So what does my garden say about me? I’m a clean freak, with an obsession for perfection and a need to control my environment … pretty accurate I’d say. So what does your garden say about

you? Does it reflect who you are, or maybe who you were? Maybe it’s time for a change and to let loose that wild side, paint the fence black and plant only orange flowering plants. Whatever you do, break from the norm and express yourself. T

Tickhill Garden Share Do you have an area of your garden that someone could use to grow fruit and veg?
Would you like to ‘grow your own’ but don’t have the space available? Tickhill Town Council would like to match garden owners with budding gardeners in order to get Tickhill growing! Nationally there is a shortage of allotments, for the increasing numbers of the population who would like one, and Tickhill is no exception to
this. However, up and down the country there are gardens with neglected vegetable patches and overgrown borders, whose owners would love the opportunity to have an enthusiastic gardener use the space to grow fruit and veg. Garden share schemes are proving very successful in other areas so it is time for Tickhill to develop this community initiative. No money exchanges hands but it is usual for the garden owner to benefit from some of the crops grown! So if you have space in your garden,
or would like to borrow a bit of someone else’s please contact Margaret Clough Cannings on 01302 745372 or email: tickhillcouncil@gmail.com A couple of successful matches have already taken place but for this to really work well we need both gardens and gardeners, the more the better, so that we can match people who live as close as possible. So don’t be shy, if you are interested in getting involved please get in touch to find out more, but with no obligation. T

Music of the West Riding The April meeting of Tickhill Music Society was a two part event, beginning with the Annual General Meeting where Members were efficiently steered through the necessary business by the Society’s Chairman. The principal offering which followed was a richly informative talk by the ebullient Dr. Simon Lindley, organist of Leeds Minster and Leeds Town Hall and a director of several Choirs and Choral Societies. His topic was ‘Music of the West Riding’ and the audience soon became aware that his knowledge and experience in that area was rich and wide ranging. Speaking fluently and without notes his talk surveyed the choral scene of the Leeds, Huddersfield, Wakefield and Bradford areas, straying south to Sheffield.
We were introduced to many musical personalities coming from Yorkshire, with such famous names
The whole evening was thoroughly informative T as Dame Janet Baker, Lesley Garrett, Frederick Delius and Sterndale Bennett. Dr. Lindley’s talk was not only full of detailed facts, dates and musical personalities but was neatly spiced with humour, often in an engaging ‘throw-away’ style. It was not until the second half that Dr Lindley treated us to some musical extracts on the piano dashed off with assured aplomb. The whole evening was thoroughly informative and, judging by the questions raised at the end, had kept his audience both engaged and entertained. It is always a pleasure to hear someone speak with such enthusiasm and conviction and Dr. Lindley provided plenty of both for the delight of an appreciative audience. AGL. T

First Drives: Volvo V40 By Tim Barnes-Clay
Gone are the days of ‘wardrobe on wheels’ or ‘only teachers drive those’ jokes. Volvo now has some seriously stylish cars in its stable — and the V40 is the latest one. Like all Volvos it is well built but this has a definite athletic appearance about it. From the twin tailpipes to the low profile tyres on 18 inch rims the V40 D4 SE obviously means business. But does it deliver? Absolutely. The 1984cc five cylinder, 20 valve oil-burner churns out 175bhp, so 0-62 comes in a rapid 8.6 seconds. The wide car sits low on the road and takes corners on rails. The diesel rattle is barely noticeable, even on start up, and, as with all Swedish-made cars, the seats are ultra-supportive on long commutes. The V40 isn’t just about performance and grip though; it also provides enough space for four-up. The boot, although not massive, is decent enough to shove in everything a young family might need – from a week’s worth of shopping to a 48 48

couple of baby buggies and all the gear that goes with young kids. Of course, safety is never an issue with Volvo and the V40 is no different. It is the safest car in its class, having achieved the highest score ever recorded by EuroNCAP in recent crash tests. This is thanks, in part, to pioneering technologies such as the world's first pedestrian airbag and Volvo’s autonomous braking system, City Safety, which also now qualifies for reduced insurance premiums. And, as you might expect with a diesel turbo, the £24,795 V40 D4, on test here, is an efficient motor. On average it can return up to 65.7mpg, so it certainly endorses Volvo’s thinking that it “offers the solution for drivers who want a premium vehicle experience with low emissions and low running costs, but who don't want to sacrifice equipment, styling or safety features”. Put simply, the V40 delivers unprecedented choice in the premium hatchback sector without compromise. It’s a great car; not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for — usually.

community The PPG thanks the practice for this response.
The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare. We passed on some questions to the practice, the following is their response. You suggested, we listened and where possible made the following alterations to our practice Q. Music in waiting room at Tickhill. • Various studies have been conducted and these show in the majority of people they are more positive. • Obviously, the selection of music needs to be considered which is why we try to only play easy listening/middle of the road music. • Background music also has the benefit of masking patients’ conversations with reception staff. • Regarding the volume of music, reception staff monitor this to ensure that it does not become too obtrusive. Q. Automatic door closure at Tickhill • We have looked at options available and are actively trying to manage the situation given the weight of this fire door.
Updates • Doncaster NHS is now in place. • This practice is now registered with CQC. (Care Quality Commission) • The number of appointments not attended in our practice still averages 2 per day or 10 per week. Please help us to get people an appointment by reducing this waste
• We are looking to address this with a dedicated notice board and relocating the internal repeat prescription box. Q. Old magazines in waiting room • Magazines are kindly brought in by patients however, we will dispose of older titles. Q. Why can’t we be told if doctors are running late? • We will ask reception staff to monitor this and advice waiting patients accordingly, but their priority is dealing with the patient at the reception desk. Q. Can there be a list of Duty Chemists on the door at Harworth Primary Care Centre • We will pass this to the Building Management Meeting as we are only tenants within this building. Q. Put the number of missed appointments on Information Board • We circulate information to the PPG and place on the notice board, however, that’s not seen by those who don’t attend. Q. Year 6 School visit London & Kingswood In early April the Year 6 pupils at Estfeld were fortunate enough to visit the Kingswood Centre at Ashford and London. The Kingswood Centre has state of the art outdoor and adventurous pursuit facilities and Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed being daredevils for the week as they abseiled, zip-wired, and took the leap of faith. It was fortunate they most of them had a good head for heights. More leisurely pursuits included archery, laserquest, circus skills, quad-biking and swimming.
Street. They also took in St. James’ Park and Buckingham Palace, before heading for Trafalgar Square. The last call of the day was to the National Gallery where the pupils viewed
paintings by the Impressionists, having studied the Impressionists in school. Throughout the week the pupils took the opportunity to try new experiences and challenges. The week was rounded off with a disco where the group had a chance to dress to impress and dance the night away at Club Kingswood.
The party also took a cultural day trip to London. The pupils took a flight on the London Eye and a Thames river cruise, learning about the capital’s sights and history. After lunch the party walked along Whitehall, stopping outside Downing 56 56

At our meeting on 18th April Jerry Kersey gave a talk about “40 Years of Broadcasting”. Jerry has been a broadcaster on sound radio for over 40 years both nationally and locally – he still does a 2 hour slot on Sunday afternoons for BBC Radio Sheffield. His interactive style kept the audience on their toes and his talk was both interesting and amusing. Thank you Jerry for a great evening’s entertainment. Another appeal for help! Has anybody got an old WW2 Clothing Coupon Book? If so may we borrow it for photographing with a view to using it as an illustration in 60 60

Normally by now our meetings have finished until September but not so this year. On Thursday 20th June we are holding an extra meeting when Malin Holst will talk about “Analysing the Bones “ This may sound pretty dry stuff but the bones in question are those from the people buried round Rotherham Minster the excavation of which Debora Moretti talked about so interestingly last year. Since then the bones have been analysed by the Dept of Osteology at York and the results should give much more information about the lives and

causes of death of the predominantly working class population of Rotherham some 200 years ago. Malin Holst has also recently been working on the skeletons exhumed from the Fitzwilliam tomb in St Mary’s Church and may be able to shed some light on the different lifestyles of the rich and poor in days gone by. As usual the meeting will be in The Methodist Schoolroom starting at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) and visitors will be welcome. T

Tickhill Town Council - JUNE 2013
The office of the council has been very busy this month. The books have been to the internal auditor and the necessary paperwork should by now be on its way to the external auditor. All the facts and figures will be published in September/October depending on how soon the external auditor deals with it! Generally speaking, although the country is in an economic stalemate, the council think they are in a strong enough financial position to seriously consider the appointment of a Litter picker for the Town. If they are able to launch this, the post will be advertised on the Council notice board outside the library and on the notice board on the Cricket field. Unfortunately D.M.B.C. is not in a position to help with this either by removing the litter collected or providing any equipment. It’s down to Tickhill Town Council. Hopefully minor upgrades to the Pavilion will continue to be made throughout this summer and the floor and two side toilets is the number one target. The Pavilion is beginning to look a little shabby and needs a little T.L.C. and if funds permit it will be redecorated. Thank you all for returning your questionnaire re the spending of the 106 monies. The results were very positive further quotes are now being sourced for the work to be carried out to remove the sand and replace it with a synthetic surface.
62 62
You will all have received a survey from D.M.B.C. Safer Neighbourhood Team asking you what you liked and disliked about Tickhill. I hope you did not miss the opportunity to have a moan about the litter, dog foul and parking on the grass verges. Please continue to report incidents of antisocial behaviour through Doncaster’s website or telephone them on 736000 this includes litter, fly tipping, broken or dangerous pavements and pot holes and of course dog foul. Tickhill Together Many thanks to all who in any way contributed towards the success of the Scarecrow Festival. Some great ideas again, lots of folk around the village and beautiful weather to crown it all. Thanks, too, to those who collected litter. Much appreciated. Our next event is “T-Fest” on Saturday 21st September. Let’s hope we have a similar buzz about the place. Lots of music and dance to enjoy – for all ages – in lots of venues – all day. Tickets available from KSM, Deli 28 and Castlegate DIY. Visit www.T-Fest.co.uk for more information.

Computer Blues My computer is a lot like me, A long way past its best, It’s getting rather tired And it needs to take a rest.
The RAM has gone all sheepish And the Router’s lost its way The Server’s not responding Everything’s in disarray. A warning light is flashing So there’s something on the blink, The Printer may be sulking Or just running out of ink. The Hard Drive’s lost its impulse And has gone all soft and weak, My Windows all need cleaning And the Mouse just fails to squeak. I have struggled and I’ve tussled But I fear I’ve lost the fight, So I need a trouble shooter Just to put the whole lot right Philip Mottram T
At the end of the Church Annual Meeting on Sunday 28th April Nigel Wright drew the winning numbers. 1st No. 13 Geoff Foulds £96 2nd No. 68 Pam Bramley £64 3rd No. 56 Liz Birch £40 We have had one new member this last month so there are 19 numbers still available, with membership costing £5 per month. With regular churchgoers contributing towards church funds on a weekly basis we hope that there are others, who may rely on the church being there, but are unable to attend regularly, who could help St. Mary’s meet its annual commitments by taking a number. Application forms may be found in church and the library or if you speak to the vicar, a churchwarden (Phil Beavers, Judith Black or Stuart Millard) or the organiser Phil Thomas (744946) we will get one to you. Many thanks in anticipation. T
