welcome to the MAY 2013 edition of Tickhill Today.

‘Ne’er cast a clout till May be out’ English proverb

The origin of this saying dates back to the 18th century, its meanings however are less clear. The first part means simply ‘don’t discard your winter clothing’ but ‘till May be out’ has more than one interpretation! Some think it refers to the month of May, others believe it is the May blossom of the Hawthorne that we need to wait for. Which ever version you prefer there haven’t been many opportunities to discard winter coats yet this year, and I for one hope that May will bring with it the promise of warmer weather.

The June celebratory 100th issue of Tickhill Today will be out around the time of the Bank Holiday at the end of May, anything you would like included should be with me by Friday 10th May - quite early this month due to the way the weeks fall, so don’t miss out.

community We have just had a day out in Much Wenlock, the small shropshire town, similar in many ways to Tickhill, and with its own poetry festival, now in its 3rd year, with Carol ann duffy (poet laureate) as its patron. The highlight of our trip was not the poetry or the performances we saw, but the general activity in the town, of people getting together to enjoy events and discuss the relative merits of what they had seen. The town was very busy (many, presumably like us from elsewhere), the tea- shops and pubs were heaving and business was brisk. This is what lies ahead for us with the first T- Fest now looming in september. at Much Wenlock we paid proper ticket money for one evening event, more than the ticket price for a whole days worth of activities at T Fest, which is promising to be Yorkshire good value. Cast in Doncaster will be opening its doors soon, the new performance venue on Sir Nigel Gresley Square. It’s called CAST as it is at the heart of Don-CAST-er….and punning aside, a new cultural venue in Doncaster is a welcome thing and with the opening of its doors I very much hope that there will be some exciting and innovative, difficult and demanding work shown in the town. To find out more and put your name on the mailing list : www. castindoncaster.com T Harley Gallery at Welbeck The Bodging Project until 2 June. Bodging is the first stage of a furniture process which takes place in the wood where the wood for perhaps a chair leg or banister spindle has been coppiced and then turned on a very basic foot treadle lathe before going off to a workshop to become part of a piece of furniture. This looks like a fascinating show. Runners and Riders – The Rise of Modern Horse Racing – an exhibition 5 May until February 2014 Reused Refuse Until 2 June A showcase featuring craft makers 8 8

Simple Weight

Loss is it really true that exercise can make you feel good?

answer: When you cycle, swim, run, or carry out any other form of endurance exercise, your pituitary gland releases substantial quantities of ‘endorphins’, chemicals which can block sensations of pain and produce overall feelings of euphoria.

do i need to go to the gym to exercise? answer: The simple answer to this is NO! Walking, riding your bike, playing football with the kids are all great forms of exercise that do not need to be performed in the gym. Everyday household chores such as cleaning and gardening also work the body and are all forms of physical activity.

is NO! Try using plastic bottles filled with water to make your own weights, or lifting a bag with books inside to provide resistance. Tins of food can also be used as substitute weights, or why not use your own body weight to provide resistance. Try doing exercises such as dips, squats, press ups, situps, lunges at home, try walking or running up and down the stairs to give your thighs a good workout?

Can you suggest anything i could do to become more active?

Look at ways you can be more active in your everyday life. For example, could you walk up the stairs at work rather than taking the lift? Could you go for a walk in your lunch break? Could you walk the kids to school? Try and be active around the home hovering, and dusting are all forms of physical activity. Why not put on some music and ‘dance’ i am not able to take up a regular whilst doing your cleaning. T

activity each week due to time/ work constraints.

do i need to buy some weights to exercise at home? answer: The simple answer again

Excess Baggage? With over half of us saying we’d enjoy our summer holiday more if we were happier with our body a local slimming expert has revealed that there is time to kick off those weight loss plans. Christine who runs the Tickhill slimming World group says if you want to lose weight without going hungry, improve your overall health, fitness and well-being then slimming world is the place to go. a survey found that more than half of us spoil our summer holidays before we’ve even packed our bikinis because we’re self-conscious and worried about wearing a swimming costume in public or getting into the pool in front of others. statistics show that over half of us will try to lose weight for the big summer holiday this year but somehow the motivation flags and we end up disappointedly packing the same supersize shorts as last year.

THURSDAY Tickhill 7.30pm The Parish Room, Northgate Tel: Christine 07825 686437

That’s where Slimming World can help, it’s possible to lose a stone or more over six weeks. So this summer we won’t need to get to the beach feeling like we need to hide in the shade – we’ll have all the confidence and motivation we need to get summer off to a great start! Slimming World’s great Food Optimising eating plan really is Extra Easy and members lose weight easily without ever going hungry. They still enjoy all their favourite meals all based on hearty healthy Slimming World recipes. Then each week in group we share more great food ideas and spur each other on for the next week. However much weight you have to lose you can make a big difference in six weeks by making long lasting changes that will transform your body, your health and your whole outlook. St Marys Year 6 visit to Crucial Crew on Wednesday 20th March Year 6 visited The Lifewise Centre in Hellaby, rotherham to learn vital life skills, including fire, road and personal safety tips. Here are their impressions. Crucial Crew was... EPIC, SURPRISING, TREMENDOUS, KNOWLEDGEABLE it made you feel... SHOCKED, PUZZLED, INVOLVED, and made you think... what COULD happen. But was very very VERY... EXCITING!!!

arson

Arson is the act of setting something on fire on purpose. It is against the law to commit arson and can result in a maximum sentence of a lifetime in jail if it’s a house or something large like that. Setting a stick on fire to cook marshmallows isn’t arson, but setting a Lamborghini-LP6700 Aventador costing £350,000 certainly is arson.

24 24

Arson displays stupidity. Never dare someone to do arson or do it yourself, or you could be much worse off.

First aid

The First Aid training was fun. We had a chance to flip our friend on their side so they don’t choke on their tongue while unconscious. We were shown lots of different positions such as the recovery position. We were taught how to get an object out of a friend’s throat using back pumps. Using the palm of your hand you hit hard between the shoulder blades until the object is out.

House on Fire

One of the scenarios was a boys bedroom. Year 6 found out about all the different ways to know if there is a fire behind a door, and how to stop smoke coming into the room. They also found out what things in the room can set on fire, like clothes on heaters, candles on T.V.s or using a cube plug called an adaptor, it is much safer to use one with four in row like a gang plug.

road safety

At Crucial Crew we learned about road safety such as how long it takes for a driver to stop, how dangerous it is to play games on the road and also how dangerous it is to listen to music while crossing

TICKHILL TODAY

the road. Did you know that it takes 9 metres for a driver to even think about stopping and an extra 16 to actually stop if they’re going 30mph average speed in most towns?

The Bus

At Crucial Crew there were plenty of scenarios; one was the bus. On the bus we learned how to get on and off the bus and a lot of other useful tips that will help us in our journeys later in life. We were included in all stages, someone even was the bus driver. We were told all the rules of the bus and how to keep safe as well. We were shown where the emergency exits were. SAFE TRAVEL!

Crucial Crew/ The Pub

In the pub scenario, we learnt about what are drugs and what aren’t drugs. We learnt about the really bad ones like: cannabis, heroin, cocaine, nicotine and deodorant. At first none of us thought deodorant was a drug, but then the man told us that people use it as a drug by spraying it in their mouths. We all got to see what a drunk person saw like with some special glasses. We each had a go at wearing the glasses and trying and get a ball in a bucket most of us failed! It was very fun and interesting and if we had the chance, we would DEFINITELY go again. T

St Mary’s Patchwork i have had a few phone calls this month from parents who would like their daughters to join the waiting list for Brownies so i think it is worth repeating the information about JoiN Us for another month. Thank you to the ones who have called for following the new system. Girl guiding UK always tries to keep up with technology and over the last few years their records and the way that we leaders manage the information we have to keep as regards contact numbers, addresses and other information has changed to reflect the growing use of technology in the world today. The way that Rainbows move up to Brownies and new Brownies are registered onto the system is the latest thing to change. Gone are the days when parents can give me a call, or pop into the meeting to get their daughter into Brownies (unfortunately). The new system requires parents to log on to the Girl guiding website (www. girlguiding.org.uk) and register their interest in the ‘parents’ section. In this

The New JOIN US System section they are given a choice of all the Brownie groups in the area and the night they would like to attend. If a pack in Tickhill is chosen then I will get an email and it goes on from there. At the moment I, and many other leaders, am not convinced that this is progress in small and rural communities where everyone knows everyone else, but at this moment we have no choice but to give the new system a good try. If your daughter is currently a Rainbow, please talk to the Rainbow leaders when they are due to move up to Brownies. If all else fails, however, please still contact me directly as I am a big believer that there is always a way to get around any system! Clare Carr, Brown owl, 07780 703012 T

Join with me to celebrate The wonders of st Mary’s Gate. This busy, linking, one-way street is one that must be hard to beat. its length is just a hundred paces But all along in several places Can be seen in random batches over fifty tarmac patches, The calculations won’t defeat us, average: one for each two metres! As well - as if the Council cares! Are further holes that need repairs. As nervous walkers limp and lurch Heading for St. Mary’s church They can truthfully avow ‘No road is holier than thou’. Someone ought to take a look And check the Guinness Records book. Those few words of celebration. Scarcely need much explanation. Though some holes may now be mended. School Safety Week each year in March we hold a “safety Week”. We focus on all aspects of safety in lessons and assemblies and also invite visitors into school to extend our pupils’ knowledge and skills. At the beginning of the week we received a visit from the South Yorkshire Fire Service. Our Reception Class were visited by the fire crew from Maltby station in their fire engine and learned about all of the special equipment that the fire crews carry, so that they can help those in danger. The children were allowed to climb into the engine to see the dashboard and switch on the sirens. Classes 2 and 4 were also visited by the Fire Safety Officers and learned all about fire prevention and the steps to take should a fire break out. During the week our Year 6 pupils also visited the Lifewise Centre at Hellaby for the day to visit the Crucial Crew. They learned about many aspects of personal safety and how to take action so that they do not 28 28

find themselves in dangerous situations. The day as always was very informative and the pupils were surprised at the new information that they learned. We were also pleased to welcome back to school Trevor Polson from St. John Ambulance. Trevor again worked with all of the pupils in Key Stage 2 teaching them about first aid. Some of our pupils are now on their

third year of training and their skills and knowledge are being extended as the years go by. We are very proud of the fact that we are doing all that we can to teach the children about the importance of first aid and being able to help others and themselves, especially when this is currently something that has been of interest in the media. community Hello everyone, this has been another really busy month for us with a heavy influx of cats and dogs, but fortunately it has also been busy with people adopting our residents. Before anyone takes one of our dogs home they attend a saturday morning induction meeting which usually lasts for about an hour and a half. This enables everyone to ask as many questions as they have time for and is especially helpful to new dog owners. our dog listeners are very knowledgeable and do a great job of making a new dog owners life a little easier. I know I ask every month but we are really desperate for dog walkers. Come on everyone I am sure there are lots of people out there wanting to get fit and help a charity at the same time. We do what we can regarding fund raising and there are still tickets left for our latest fund raiser Wild West night at Ye old Belle at Barnby Moor on the 8th June. Tickets are £20 includes supper disco and a live band, Also raffle and prize for best dressed, we need to make this evening a success as the money we hope to raise will help to keep our dogs and cats well fed and watered. If anyone has any time on their hands and would like to involve themselves in fundraising please let us know, we always need help especially at our July dog show and Sponsored dog walk at the end of the year. So please call us it anyone would like to become involved just call us on 01302 711330 or 07969 203206

Amazing time recently Wadworth’s Year six went on a weeks residential to Kingswood activity Centre in staffordshire. We had a lot of fun and each day was filled with amazing activities (such as Zipwire, abseiling, Laser Quest and Quad Biking). There were many challenging activities in which we had to use lots of stamina, courage and our friend’s encouragement to complete the tasks. As well as being made for fun- it’s also educational because it teaches you teamwork, technical skills, social skills, communicational skills and skills you would need/use in your later life! They have first class, nutritious food and we had quite a wide variety to choose from. The instructors made the whole stay even more exciting! They kept us entertained ALL day! They were all experts in their jobs and kept us safe when on the equipment as well as encouraging us to face up to our challenges. Overall, Kingswood is a great place to stay with many exhilarating activities to keep you occupied all the time! We all have many enjoyable memories from there!

WARNING: If you are prone to jealousy do not read this!! Castleton Year 5 went on a residential trip to Castleton on Tuesday 19th March – Thursday 21st March 2013.We all thoroughly enjoyed it! We all thought it was very educational and extremely good fun especially the indoor activities provided by the hostel - like the roll 32 TICKHILL TODAY 32

play mine and the fossil making. There were lots of good exercise involved and a lot of things to learn. Our accommodation was great and we would give it 99.99 out of 100! The food smelt and tasted delicious and was served every night. Our meals consisted of a starter, main course and a pudding, with a cooked breakfast served every morning. On the second and last day they provided a packlunch to take out with us on our walk. We visited 3 caverns and 1 mountain, the first cavern we went to was called Treak Cliff Cavern (which is the only place in the world that Blue John is still mined.) The next day we

went to Speedwell Cavern, we learnt a lot from that like 100s and 100s of years ago when the led miners were down there was part of the Cavern were they threw rocks from the walls the water didn’t seem to rise so they called it the bottomless pit. Finally we went to Peak Cavern, which was where many films were filmed. Over all we had a really good time and we would recommend to all children ages from 8-14. By Eoin and Hayley! T

Tickhill Buses Update i have received the following response from stagecoach to letters that i have written to them requesting increased bus services to and from Tickhill We have been aware of some travel demand between Maltby, Tickhill and Bawtry for a while and I know that there have been a number of attempts to provide a regular bus service between these places in the past. It has to be recognised that one of the main reasons for the previous formats of service being withdrawn or curtailed has been that, although there is clearly some demand for the link, the actual number of passengers wishing to travel between these locations is very few. Despite the above I recognise that it must be very frustrating for people having to travel into Doncaster to connect with a bus back to Bawtry to make what should be a very short journey. We did consider whether we could stretch Service 30/30a to Tickhill when we last revised this route and timetable but unfortunately there was not quite enough running time.

There is a demand responsive bus service running into Bawtry, which serves the area immediately to the south of the town. This is funded by Nottinghamshire County Council. It may be that by prompting some discussions between Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire there may be some possibility of extending this to provide journeys from Maltby and Tickhill into Bawtry. Over the summer we will be working with Nottinghamshire County Council to review bus service provision in Bassetlaw and into South Yorkshire. I will keep your comments in mind and see if there is anything that could be planned into the bus network with the assistance of Notts CC and South Yorkshire PTE. anyone wishing to make further suggestions can contact stagecoach direct: stagecoach east Midlands P o Box 15, deacon road LiNCoLN LN2 4JB 01522 522255 or can contact me: dean sadler, 2 rawson rd Tickhill, doncaster dN11 9NG d.b.sadler@hotmail.co.uk T

Advice on CCJs

from Jones & Co

James Murray of Jones & Co gives advice on County Court Judgments & how to avoid damaging your credit rating.

A CCJ is a judgment that a county court issues when someone has failed to pay money that they owe. CCJs are a simple way for creditors to claim the money they’re entitled to. The Register of Judgments, Orders and Fines records CCJs for 6 years. Banks and other lenders can do a CCJ check against the CCJ register when deciding whether to offer credit. Getting a mortgage or loan with a CCJ is difficult. Even if you get credit, you may end up paying a higher interest rate. The moral of the story is to react quickly to a judgment entered against you and be realistic about your chances of successfully setting it aside within 1 month when deciding whether or not to pay it.

For more information or to arrange an appointment

Nearly all CCJs go on the register.

Please contact:

james.murray@ jonessolicitors.co.uk • Never pay it: If you don’t pay it, it’s shown as unsatisfied.

• Remove the CCJ: The only way to remove a CCJ is to ask the court to set aside the judgment because you have a genuine reason to dispute • Pay in full within 1 month of the judgment: it. Be careful though – if your application to set The CCJ will be removed from the register aside is unsuccessful and is heard more than 1 month after the date of the judgment it will show • Pay in full after 1 month of the judgment: up on the register even if you subsequently pay The CCJ stays on the register but it will be it in full; the 1 month runs from the date of the recorded as ‘satisfied’. judgment, not the date of the hearing.

Garden View

if you’re reading this you probably have an interest in gardening, but even armchair gardeners must be happy that spring is now well under way. May brings with it a wonderful selection of flowers, mainly in cool blues, purples, pinks and whites, and some great fragrances too, including the heady scent of Lilac. it’s an old fashioned shrub which has fallen out of favour, and for the majority of the year it looks relatively uninteresting – but the Lilac bush smells fantastic in a gentle May evening breeze. Mix this aroma with the scent of freshly mown grass and you have the most perfect spring fragrance, better than any air-freshener. After a long winter with more snow than I can ever remember, and yet more depressing news about our economy, I think what we all need is to enjoy a little nostalgia; I’m not talking bunting here, but bedding plants. Towards the end of the month is the time when bedding plants and other tender perennials can be planted outside. Thousands of people will flock to garden centres up and down the country over the coming weeks, and for some it’s their only pilgrimage of the year to the outdoor retail world. It’s an opportunity for the nurseryman (or woman) to display

A jar of nostalgia row after row of highly colourful plants, stacked, tray by tray like jars of sweets in an old fashioned shop. Each standing to attention, faces held high, their label pointing forwards and each doing their utmost to shout “buy me, buy me”. The flowers shine in the sunshine like the sparkling boiled fruit sweets in the jars, oh what is it to be, the bi coloured rhubarb custards, or the combination of blackberry and raspberry jellies? Choosing your colour scheme for this year’s bedding display (be that just the one hanging basket or a front garden that looks like a Victorian public park) is exciting, and a totally personal task. I’ve know it can cause arguments between couples, but have also known marriages which have survived successfully on the basis that “you plant your side and I’ll plant mine”. There are those who like a multi coloured cocktail of plants (a mixed tray of Petunias for example), those who prefer to stick to a muted pallet of 2-3 ‘sophisticated colours’ (usually purple, blue and white) and then those trying to achieve a Swiss

cottage look who might plummet for just the one (perhaps a red trailing Ivy Leafed Pelargonium). But whatever your preference I don’t think it really matters, because buying annual bedding plants brings nostalgic happiness all round; it’s good for the nurseryman’s business, brilliant for passersby to enjoy, and most importantly great at making you feel happy at home. Gold Medal Gardener goes back to Nature at RHS Chelsea 2013 When you’ve already won one gold and ‘Best in show’ accolade and two silver medals at rHs Chelsea, how do you come up with a garden design to do it again? The answer is to create a garden that pushes the boundaries of garden design building on a passion for nature and demonstrating versatility and creativity, imparting the designers love for his craft. Braithwell’s Jamie Dunstan, 41, RHS Chelsea Gold winner in 2011 has created a visionary design for his 2013 garden; ‘As Nature Intended’. It sees a holistic appreciation of how nature influences art, medicine and food production through sculpture and hard and soft landscaping. “I am delighted to be returning to Chelsea and working once again with my previous sponsors, Stockton Drilling,” said

Jamie. “This year my garden will be a natural progression from ‘Winds of Change’ and will demonstrate how the use of sustainable products and creative planting, can show the versatility of modern garden design and how it can succinctly harmonise with properties of our past.” With natural stone provided by Burlington Stone, barley, yew and willow sculptures by commended sculptor Emma Stothard and a sympathetic planting scheme, the garden will provide an oasis of peace and quiet amongst the hustle and bustle of Main Street at RHS Chelsea. “We are thrilled to team up with Jamie once again and already are very excited about the visionary design that he has created,” commented

Fiona O’Connell proprietor Stockton Drilling. “His amazing flair for garden design is superb and ‘As Nature Intended’ is a garden that brings core elements of nature together.” “It was very important to me that I created a garden that contrasted with the more industrial and reclaimed elements from the last garden,” said Jamie. “I hope to inspire anyone who visits the garden and I am determined and hopeful that this year’s garden will prove to a winner once again.” Jamie and his team will be on hand each day at Chelsea to share his considerable design and horticultural knowledge imparting their enthusiasm and vision for the garden with all visitors to the stand. rHs Chelsea Flower show commences on 21st May and runs until 25th May 2013. The ‘as Nature intended’ garden can be found on Main avenue.

Tickhill & Colliery PPG asks Patients to think ahead Travelling abroad? – think vaccinations and think documentation required from your GP surgery!

Are you going overseas for your holidays this year? If you are then please allow plenty of time for getting properly vaccinated and for any extra documentation required from your GP. There are many places in Europe where you can go safely without needing to be protected by vaccinations. The general rule is that the further you are travelling and the more unusual the destination, the more likely you are to need vaccinations. Many illnesses can be completely prevented or the risk of illness substantially reduced by efficient vaccination. You should allow at least 8 weeks to be prepared before travelling as some injections need to be given at intervals. If you aren’t sure about the risks of the country you’re travelling to you can get advice from your GP practice or practice nurse. Other documentation such as letters or certificates for travel or to support an application could be required e.g:• Reports and certificates requested by patients e.g. to support an application for travel insurance or to allow liquid medication to 48 48

our day services operate throughout the year at community locations across doncaster. They are great places to meet and socialise, have a fresh cooked two course meal and join in a range of activities, or just have a chat and read the papers, it’s up to you. We have centres at the following locations every Monday excluding bank holidays: Tickhill Methodist Church & Rossington Memorial Hall. If you would like to come along for a ‘taster’ day, or require more information, please contact Age UK Doncaster on 01302 812345. T

The March meeting started with a minutes silence in memory of the late Ken Hempsell who sadly passed away whilst on holiday in australia. a skilled French polisher, Ken was the sort of committee man essential to a club like ours – willing to take on any task or responsibility and do it well. He will be missed. Acting chair Dick Green then introduced our speaker Steve Hickman from Hoyland Plant Centre. Since he last spoke to us in 2007 Steve has been appointed holder of the National Collections of both Agapanthus and Tulbaghia and there is nothing about the various species of these plants that he could not advise on. With a wide range of plants for sale and suitable Yorkshire humour he went down well. Thursday the 30th of May will be an orchid night. Our speaker Ted Croot’s subject is “Orchids”plain and simple. There will be plants on show but none for sale. Start 7-15pm in the Methodist Schoolroom. Visitors welcome - £3 On Friday the 24th May our Chairman Ray Hill and his wife Gillian are holding a ‘Coffee Day’ with sale of bedding and vegetable plants in their garden at 2 Pinfold Lane, just next to the new cemetery. They will be open from 10 am – 12 noon, 2-4pm and 6-8pm with proceeds in aid of the Methodist Church and charities. Just the right time for planting, after the last frosts. Phil Thomas T

. . .but not TODAY

The vanished village of Levitt Hagg was vividly brought back to life by Hugh Parkin at our March meeting. From a wonderful collection of old photographs we saw how this self sufficient village built for workers at a quarry on the south bank of the river don opposite sprotborough provided for the needs of the quarrymen and their families. a rare piece of film showing skaters on the frozen river ended a nostalgic and very enjoyable evening. Thank you Hugh. a new occasional Paper. ‘Limestone Hill Farm and Mill’ written by Duncan and Imelda Dewar 56 56

TICKHILL TODAY

is our latest Occasional Paper. The history of this family run farm draws on a range of documents, Duncan’s family memories and artefacts discovered on the land. The Paper also outlines how the ruined mill has been restored and may be visited free of charge by prior arrangement. This new publication, price £2, is on sale at KSM Card Gallery. More help please with our new book “Tickhill Through Time”

We are currently seeking information on the history of public services in Tickhill, gas, water, electricity, post, telephones, medical services, police etc. Because of the changes in the way these services have been provided over the years (nationalisation, privatisation etc) some of the records are difficult to

trace. If you know anything about the history of any of these services or can point us to somebody who might know something please contact David Walters on 742918 or by email at dgwalters@talktalk.net Thank you. Our next meeting will be on Thursday May 16th when Phil Judkins will talk about “Richard of York, the Doncaster Connection”. A well timed talk in view of the fact that his remains have recently been dug up in a Leicester car park! As usual the meeting will be in the Methodist Schoolroom, Northgate stating at 7.30pm. Visitors will be welcome. T

Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - MAY 2013

as a change to my moan and groan of dog foul and litter, i thought i would let you know what has been happening in the office since december. As well as the normal accounts and meeting preparation, minute taking etc and reporting nuisance behaviour etc. I have (and still am) studying for a certificate in Council Work. With legislation changing on a daily basis these days, the Council suggested that we would benefit from being up to date with all that is going on, and felt it would be appropriate if I [the Clerk] attended a suitable course to achieve this. It consists of six modules: Roles and Responsibilities, Law, Procedures, Finance, Planning and Community. All are assessed by the Gloucester University and hopefully by the end of this year I will have completed the task. So far I have passed Roles and Responsibilities and Law. I am now working on the next two modules Procedures and Finance. Each module consists of personal study, tutorials, webinars and seminars, with a final submission of the work and a pass or fail grade awarded. So far I am doing O.K.! with two good passes. To date I have been able to establish that what we do in Tickhill is correct and Lawful, and I have picked up some valuable information along the way which has made my work a little more interesting and easier. Returning to study after many years was difficult and needed much discipline but hopefully the results 58 58

TICKHILL TODAY

will be rewarding. I hope to complete the course by the end of this year. Please report the usual to D.M.B.C. 736000 and if you are on the internet please log on to D.M.B.C. website and look for “Do it on Line”. It is a facility that allows reporting of litter, dog foul, anti social behaviour and much more. You also get a report number that can be chased up. I ask you all to report what you find yourselves, because if I report it, is logged as one report, but if individual residents report it clocks up the numbers! We are still progressing with allotments and garden share. We already have some gardens offered but no gardeners as yet. Please make yourself known if you feel you can take part in this venture. Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan

as we move from our initial consultation towards drafting content for the Neighbourhood Plan, it becomes important to study the rules (officially described as the ‘basic conditions’ which must be met). What we put forward must comply with national policy and “contribute to sustainable development”. Perhaps of most significance to us is the requirement to be “in general conformity with the Local development Framework Core strategy” what we put forward mustn’t conflict with doncaster Council’s approved planning strategy.

Fortunately this shouldn’t be too difficult. Your collective wish for

Tickhill, as expressed so far in the consultation, is for minimal change; you don’t want to see Tickhill grow larger beyond the present boundaries, you do want to see the character of the town preserved and enhanced. You are concerned that through traffic should be reduced and would like to see community facilities improved. This accords well with the description of Tickhill as a Conservation Town in the Borough’s Core Strategy, from which these quotations are taken. Tickhill is an “attractive market town with a high quality historic centre containing a good range of services that serve wider catchments”. The town centre is “surrounded by extensive suburban developments constrained from further outward growth by the Green Belt”. “New development on the edge of the town would further erode its historic

character, increase car journeys into the centre and increase outward commuting.” “New housing will be limited to quality infill within the existing settlement. The district centre will be protected and enhanced and appropriate employment opportunities will be within existing employment sites and the town centre.” “The town is relatively poor in terms of public transport accessibility.” All this seems very much in line with the comments received by the Neighbourhood Plan team. If we can expand this into the detailed policies and proposals which will make up the Plan, hopefully the result will be what our community seeks as a blueprint for the future. Please do make any comments or suggestions to help the team with their work. e mails can be sent to the secretary, rosemary Chappell, at pchappell@callnetuk.com T

Cure Sam

13 year old samuel rowbotham who lives in st Leonards, Tickhill, was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic in July 2010. a rare auto-immune disease that usually affects children aged 8-15, type 1 diabetes is different to the much more common type 2. With no cure in sight, samuel is permanently connected to an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor, to monitor his blood glucose levels 24 hours a day. Without these, he runs the risk of hypoglycemia, which can lead to a coma if not treated immediately. Since his diagnosis, Samuel’s dad

Gareth has been raising money for a cure - over £6,000 to date. The latest daft challenge he is undertaking is the biggie!!! The London Marathon! By the time you read this, he will have (hopefully) completed the 26 mile (and 385 yard) slog. Training hasn’t been all plain sailing with injuries taking their toll in the buildup. His wife Nikki and daughters Lily-Anne & Grace will be going down with Samuel to support their Dad on the day. If Gareth does complete the marathon, he will need some help on his next goal he needs to raise £1800 to give to JDRF for his place in the race!!!
