LIONS READY TO ROAR AT NEW VENUE

Tickhill Countryside Group Junior Quiz

THE TICKHILL AND District lions are preparing for a very busy period between now and Christmas. the first event being organised by the lions is the annual Bonfire and Firework Display which will be held at the tickhill Cricket Club on saturday 3rd November from 5.30pm. By now you should have seen the many posters advertising the event in shops and around the village. A couple of race nights are being organised and we will also be manning a stall at the tickhill late Night shopping evening. We will be selling our Christmas raffle tickets for only £1 each with the chance to win many fabulous prizes including a weekend city break. All proceeds, as always, will be given to local good causes. once November is over the lions will not be ‘putting their feet up’, in fact the total opposite by putting their best foot forward helping santa on his trips around the surrounding neighbourhoods. look out for details of times and routes in the next issues. Your continued support is very much appreciated enabling the lions to help many local people & groups. Tickhill and District Lions 

TICKHILL’S TWO PRIMARY

schools were challenged by tickhill Countryside Group to complete a walk around the countryside surrounding the village and answer questions about the Flora and Fauna they saw on the way.

Group commented on her wonderful presentation and enthusiasm. second place went to hannah mickley.

the quiz was designed to encourage the children out into the countryside and to appreciate the nature on their doorstep.

Both children received prizes, for their entries, of Nature identification Pocket books and Bird feeders and bird food. the Group hopes that this will encourage the winners to enjoy the wildlife around them.

the winner of the quiz was lucy Baker, who as well as completing the quiz, also added photographs of what she saw on the day. members of the

the Group would like to thank all the children who took part and Castlegate DiY for donating some of the prizes. 

St Marys School

ON WEDNESDAY THE 3rd of

october 2012 Years 5 & 6 as part as their science topic, had a star-tling experience through time and space. We were involved in an adventure through our solar system and beyond. We looked at all the biggest planets and blazing stars in the universe, we also had a visit to the sun and the moon. We saw surfaces of planets that no- one would ever dream of going on because they are deadly! We saw all of this and more in one hour and fifteen minutes and it was all in one small but big tent called the planetarium. And we could sum it up in three syllables, fab-u-lous. by sean, Jake, Alex and Matthew  A Planetarium is a blow up dome where you can see lots of constellations and planets of all sorts

Thepolestarplanetarium

of shapes and sizes. the Planetarium is like the tardis - small on the outside but like a house on the inside with no lights just the light of the sparkling stars. WArNiNG - our sun will turn into a red sun and burn up the earth but only in 5,000,000 years and that is long time.

Bike ability training

YEAR 6 PUPILS have been given

the opportunity to do cycle training for six weeks with a lady called sarah from the DmBC road safety education department. the children from st mary’s have been taking their bikes to school every Friday. they have been split into four groups to go out for cycle training at different times. the training is for life ahead when children and young teenagers need to understand the dangers of cycling on roads. the children have had a lot of fun since their training started! Cycle training is also energetic so it will get pupils of Year 6 going out more and enjoying themselves! We are very, very grateful that sarah could come and happily teach us how to ride our bikes safely. it has taught us a lot about road safety and bike ability. sarah is very kind and helpful. she has taught us a lot like primary and 16 TICKHILL TODAY

secondary position. on the first week sarah checked our bikes for rusty chains, loose handle bars, brakes and the height of the bike. on the second week we took our bikes out onto Wong lane and it was then that we learned how to ride at a t-junction. We look forward to completing our course in the next 3 weeks. by Charnie,Lily-Anne, Brandon, Jacob 

Bread making experience YEAR 6 HAVE been making bread for our harvest festival. the bread making experience was amazing. in pairs we made eight buns each for the harvest festival which took place at tickhill st mary’s Church on Friday 28th september. the bread was placed in baskets and used as part of the service. 

We saw videos of stars the sun and planets in our solar system that were pictures of Greeks Gods, Queens and mythical creatures. one of the constellations is called orion’s belt. Another is one of the mythical creatures, Pegasus. the universe is an amazing thing. there are lots of universes around us - which one do you live in? by Emily, Maison,Callum, Oliver 

Duck Race

I SAT IN the bag waiting to be set free. i am number 1350, so i was right at the top.lots of people started to crowd round the bag. All a sudden the bag was let go.i was in the lead but 1065 swam in front of me, then 1035.then after about 5 minutes i was about 575th in a line of ducks! Next stop was the dark tunnel . i entered the darkness - something slimy touched my yellow skin.i tried to swim forward but i was stuck. the rest of the ducks swam in front, but the last duck 101 swam into me and loosened the weed. i was free! i swam wildly to the finish line but i was too late. i came 1348th , i wasn’t first or second or third but i enjoyed it. it was the best day ever! emily 

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

It’s never to late to learn to Swim

They say that 1 in 5 adults cannot swim and that swimming is the only sport that can save your life! So why doesn’t everyone who hasn’t learnt to swim by the time they are adults get themselves off CALL IN to swimming lessons to learn? FOR A I run a private adult swimming school at Bircotes Leisure Centre Q UOTE every Sunday night and have been teaching adult swimmers of all ages and abilities for some considerable time, so I reckon I’ve heard TODAY ! most of the reasons that people come up with. Here’s a few: swimming gets you (and particularly your hair) wet; you have to expose bits of you that you’d rather keep under wraps; it’s probably too late to learn at your age. Some of these things are true: it is very wet in a swimming pool and it is better to swim in a swimming costume than in everyday clothes. As for it being too late to learn, most adults are surprised to find how quickly they can learn. Of course it takes different people different amounts of time, and each person has different aspirations, but to be able to enter the pool and travel around without support should only take a matter of a few lessons. There is one very real fear that many adults have regarding learning to swim, and that is that they will be recognised. I guess this fear attaches itself to the fear of exposing more of your body than you care to share with the public and the embarrassment of admitting you can’t swim. Firstly I can attest to the truth of the rumour that it is very difficult to recognise people with their clothes on. I have been caught out on a number of occasions by people coming up to me and holding long and detailed conversations with me, while I stand there in bewilderment wondering who they are. Secondly, everyone in the class is in exactly the same position as you; they are there to learn to swim and are wearing a swimming costume (and probably won’t recognise you with your Bawtry Road, pool Tickhill Station Road, clothes on either). In addition, as we hire the whole for the lessons, there is noEpworth chance that Mark Foster or Sharron Davies will turn up unannounced to upstage you. Remember, swimming is probably the only sport that can save your life as well as being probably the most complete workout for your body. It is also fun. Once you have mastered this skill you OPEN: to Fri 8am 5pm ALL Daywith Sat 8am - 4pm will be able to enjoy the pool and sea onMon holiday, go -swimming your kids or simply use the skill to get fit. - Out & About

OUR PUPILS HAVE been out and about locally to learn more about the environment and our local history. our reception Class went on their first educational visit to sherwood Pines. they learned all about the forest and its inhabitants and also engaged in some woodland art. it was busy day and the pupils returned tired but happy. What an exciting day! Class 2 visited tickhill Castle to learn more about medieval times and roger de Busli. it is wonderful to have such history on our doorstep and we are grateful to mr and mrs moss for allowing us to visit. Class 3 recently visited Potteric Carr Nature reserve. they were lucky enough to come across several great-crested newts whilst pond-dipping and under fallen logs in the woods. they had to be extremely careful not to disturb these rare creatures. later in the day they became bird-watchers and spotted several varieties of birds from the hide. ď Ž 30 TICKHILL TODAY

Figuring it out? THESE DAYS WE are plagued with numbers, some of them very large indeed. We all know what a hundred means and have a fair idea about a thousand. if we add a further 999 thousands to the first one we get a million - a thousand thousands often just indicated by the letter ‘m’. it gets written as £1m rather than the cumbersome £1,000,000. We can just about grasp this large number because we know that there are lots of millionaires and we can even dream of a lottery win of this size. in high finance circles a million pounds is regarded as small change. the next higher unit is a billion. the prefix ‘bi’ means two as in biped (two legs) and bisect (cut in two). so a billion is a million millions or 1,000,000,000.000 in bald digits, shortened to ‘bn’. or it ought to be,

24

8 3.14

but the Americans decided to call their billions a thousand millions or 1,000,000,000 and the rest of the world now seems to be following this convention. to get a comparison between these two numbers, a million seconds is equivalent to 11½ days whereas a billion seconds equals 31.6 years! in the computer world the word changes so that a billion bits of information are called gigabytes. the next higher unit is the trillion which, because the prefix ‘tri’ means three (as in tripod and tricycle), ought to be a million million millions but if fact has been shrunk in practice to a thousand thousand millions. this is written out as 1,000,000,000,000 or 1012 which is still a pretty big number. it is becoming increasingly common as several nation states

2

4

manage to accumulate debts that have to be measured in trillions of pounds, dollars or euros. Where all this money is borrowed from is something of a mystery, but then, modern banking is a closed book for ordinary mortals. When these numbers are written out in full it is possible to get some idea of just how big they are. the use of the abbreviation symbols ‘m’, ‘bn’, giga and so on tend to mask their size. Perhaps if it was required for such numbers always to be written out with all their ‘noughts’ we would be more alarmed by what we see. they could well be called numbing numbers! PHiLiP MOTTrAM 

I have heard that Legal Aid for family cases is being abolished, is this true?

N

ot quite, but the government has approved very drastic cuts to Legal Aid which will come into force in April 2013 and will have a huge impact on many people who currently receive state benefits, or are on low incomes and who are, at the moment, eligible for Legal aid for divorce, cohabitation disputes, financial disputes following separation and disputes over children, such as arguments about where a child should live, or how much contact they should have with each parent. Those areas will be removed entirely from the scope of Legal Aid, so regardless of your income, funding will not be available for new cases from April next year. Legal Aid will still be available to cover representation in Care Proceedings,

i.e. where the Local Authority makes an application to Court for orders about a child, and for other family disputes involving serious domestic violence. Solicitors expect that there will be a rush of applications for Legal Aid before the April 2013 deadline as anxious couples try to resolve family disputes whilst they are still eligible for funding. If you think that you may be affected by the changes to Legal Aid it may be sensible to seek advice as soon as possible, before the changes come into force.

Tickhill Music Society THE SOCIETY GOT off to a

cracking start with the erato Piano trio. their name is the muse of love Poetry from Greek mythology. there was plenty of love for music and poetry in execution but also much more; in particular some close team work and balanced ensemble. this was especially remarkable because simon Watterton had replaced the indisposed regular pianist at very short notice. he instantly integrated into the team as though he had been with them for years. Amazing! the trio No. 39 by haydn was full of his geniality and invention, the lyrical slow movement being followed by the final rondo played with blistering pace and drive, its hungarian influence accounting for the nickname of the Gypsy trio. in contrast the trio by Fauré was more introspective and reflective. the first movement lyrical and intense, the second a beautiful singing melody and shifting light and shade. the finale was angular and rich in rhythmic complexity. A fine achievement for an old man beginning to go deaf. Both works 38 TICKHILL TODAY

were introduced by the founder of the group Julia morneveg. the pianist introduced Beethoven’s monumental ‘Archduke’ trio opus 97, one of his finest chamber works. the four movements ranged from the nobility of the first with its interesting pizzicato section, the sprightly scherzo, the tragic theme and variations of the third movement all rounded off with the brisk finale. A fitting conclusion to a superb concert played with sensitivity, commitment and musicianship by this impressive team. the top quality of the music society’s concerts continues which augurs well for the rest of the season. Our first Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions this academic year took place in Derbyshire with some of our Year 10 students on their first ever expedition. Our students represented the school in a very positive manner and the staff said it was a pleasure to oversee the expedition. With slowly worsening weather the Mountain Rescue were called to assist the group when one student dislocated her knee. She was well looked after and safe at home by late afternoon.

Students and staff raised an amazing £972.03 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal last year. Mr Smith and Mr Thornhill from the RBL Edlington Division presented students Caitlin Boyle, Kai Carling, Victoria South and Martha Roylance with a thank you plaque, a poem and WW1 and WW2 information books to display in school. The information books were researched by Tina Marie Thornhill, a former STWCC pupil and detail local soldiers who fought and lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.

We are really pleased to have received a glowing report from the exam board JCQ. More information can be found on our website!

Doncaster Council to carry out safety work on lime trees DONCASTER COUNCIL HAS

responded to public concern over the proposed felling of 62 lime trees on Bawtry road at tickhill with a plan to preserve them as long as possible. Following a petition to keep the mature trees, Doncaster Council commissioned an expert survey to look into the possibility of preserving them at the same time as preventing any danger of falling branches. the report has revealed a large number of dead branches at the top of the trees which will be removed in a three-week programme of works which is due to take place during November. A one-way traffic system will be in operation on Bawtry road to prevent any danger to motorists or contractors while the works are underway. Doncaster Council owns the trees and will fund the arboricultural work which is expected to cost around

£20,000. the health of the trees will be checked over future years to ensure that there is no further danger of falling branches. Gill Gillies, Assistant Director of environment at Doncaster Council, said: “i understand the strong feelings which local residents have about these beautiful trees, but it is also essential to protect people and property from the very real danger of falling branches. i am confident that the current works will achieve this.” Doncaster Council had previously been working with tickhill town Council on a plan to replace the trees with oaks which are more tolerant of salty conditions. tickhill town Council has co-ordinated a fund raising campaign to purchase 80 young oak trees which will now be grown on in a nursery with a view to replacing the lime trees if this becomes necessary in future years.

Harvest Festival a time to be thankful

Friday 12th October 2012

HERE AT WADWORTH Primary school, the harvest festival is a big event and something we all look forward to every year. today we are going to be celebrating at st. John’s church in Wadworth with reverent Alun Price. this morning the receptions and Key stage 1 pupils have set off to the church to sing songs, perform poetry and read out a little of their school work. this afternoon, Key stage 2 will go and read out their poems, songs and their class work. We celebrate harvest festival every year but unfortunately it is our (year 6) last harvest festival so we hope to make it a good one just as all the 50 TICKHILL TODAY

others have been. We have been collecting food to send to the charity ‘m25’, a charity which helps young people age 1625 that have to sleep on the streets. the children in our school have been collecting food to send to the organisation so they can prepare meals with the things we give them. We also celebrate the harvest festival to share what we have; a loving family, food, a bed, and most importantly, a second family. our school family. so we would like to say thank you for helping us to help them. lanes to explore and what better than to do that with a bunch of new friends. into 2013 our ambition is to affiliate with British Cycling and grow the club and, who knows, a racing team may eventually emerge. the club was launched in september at a meeting in the scarborough Arms. ( ever noticed the Green Winged Wheel on the front of the pub? this is the original badge of the Cycle touring Club, established in 1878 and identifies the scarbs as a home for cyclists! ) Club rides are planned on saturdays at 13.30 and sundays at 9.30 meeting at the Buttercross. rides will varying in length and will be agreed by everyone on the day – nobody will get left behind! For more info about the club and membership check out our club website at www.tickhillvelo.com or follow us on Facebook & twitter @ tickhillvelo for up to the minute news. or just meet us for a ride. thanks to Alan heighton, our tickhill based artist for the fantastic logo (www.alanheighton.co.uk) and the founding club members and sponsors for your support. to the October edition W elcome of BAWTRY TODAY. TODAY

Despite my love of summer, the change in season from summer to autumn is one of my favourites. Our clocks go back an hour on 28th October, meaning the nights are darker, the leaves are falling, and Strictly Come Dancing is back on the TV! It’s time for cosy nights on the sofa, when you can relax with a cuppa and take a good look through this edition! For those of you who like to plan ahead for Christmas, now is the time to start. You might just find inspiration for that unusual gift, and if you would like to get your house and garden ready for the festive season, you’ll find all the local people you need to help you within these pages. It’s still a tough economic climate, and its important to spend money wisely and locally, to help us all through these challenging times. The next edition will be distributed to you from 28th October. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Friday 12th October.

Best Wishes, Paula

We have recently published our 14th occasional Paper entitled ‘the history of 15 and 17 Northgate’ based on research by lynne Gleadall-Baker and Jane Ward. this is a unique opportunity to find out about two local homes in the centre of tickhill whose buildings date back to the 16th 54 TICKHILL TODAY

Century. As well as showing how the buildings developed, with plenty of illustrations, the account describes the many occupants who have lived there including eight generations of lynne’s family. the paper is on sale at our meetings and at Ksm Card Gallery price £2, along with all our other Papers. our Christmas social will be at the millstone on thursday December 13th when we will be treated to a pie, peas and various puds supper followed by a lighthearted talk by Patrick harding on “the history of Christmas”. tickets at £10 per head will be on sale at our october and November meetings but there is a limit to the number available so if you want to be sure of tickets book them (and pay!) early. 

Tickhill & District LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY OUR NEXT MEETING will be on Thursday November 15th when James Lomax will talk about “Heiresses, Pious Widows & a royal Confidant”. sounds well up with some of the historical scandals shown recently on Tv – but perhaps a little nearer home! Don't miss the tax deadline Old Inhabitants

It has been my privilege and pleasure to have lived in Tickhill 31st now for forty five2013 years. Despite January this long residence it is likely to take another decade or so before being accepted as properly belonging. Even then I will not qualify as a true Tickhillian (or Tickhiller, as some people would Tax Returns completed from £125 have it). It is not possible to identify a genuine old inhabitant just by looking or by casual  Bookkeeping acquaintance. The only true means of identification is to eavesdrop on a group of them talking. It is a revelation. The powers of recall and the depth of local knowledge are a source of wonder.  Payroll

The imaginary conversation may go something like this:  Tax Returns Sorry to hear Alice Jackson has died. She was in my class at primary school when Miss Brewster  Accounts was our teacher. Tickhill Town Council - November 2012 iT’s THAT TiMe of year again and

Christmas is upon us. the late night shopping and the turning on of the lights will be taking place on 29th November. this year we have a new supplier of the lights and hopefully these will bring a little change to the decor. the trees outside the Parish room will still be festooned with lights, as so the Buttercross, the Christmas tree and lamp standards around the surrounding area. hopefully it will all go according to plan. the Best Dressed Window competition for the shops will also be going ahead as normal and our much celebrated Carol service on Christmas eve around the Buttercross. the salvation Army will be there too. Please all come along and bring relatives and friends from outside the area. As winter approaches i kindly ask all of you with hedges to please make sure they are well cut back and that they do not block or impede pedestrians walking on the footpaths. it is becoming an increasing problem, and i request that if you see such hedges please report them to D.m.B.C. on 736000. hopefully we will have the tree survey in our hands soon, and Public consultation will be ongoing. At the time of writing this nothing is known. i await a copy of the report. the refurbishment of the kitchen at the Pavilion tithes lane should be almost complete by now. it will be bigger and easier to use. Please keep it in mind for Children’s parties as it lends its self to this. (Floor easy to clean!!!) recently we have had some very antisocial behaviour at the tithes lane playing fields. if you know who these persons are would you either report it to the police on 101 or even in confidence to myself, you do not have to give your own name!!! i will pass on the information. they 60 TICKHILL TODAY

certainly have a capacity for Cider by the number of cans that have been collected. on a similar matter if you see dog foul please report this to 736000. Unless Doncaster Council knows about it they cannot act upon it. our tickhill Council Website, www.tickhilltowncouncil.co.uk is still frequently visited by many of you, and gives a direct link to tickhill town Council e mail too. it has up to date events listed and council minutes. if you need to contact me it is an easy way to facilitate this. if you need to contact the caretakers they are on 07591179658/9, Jamie and Beth. Otherwise you can contact me on 745372 or preferably by either letter or email. i will always get back to you as soon as possible if you have to leave a message.  YOUR DISTRICT COUNCILLORS ARE:  PATriCiA BArTLeTT, Tel 01302 310575, email patricia.bartlett@ doncaster.gov.uk  BOB FOrD, Tel 01302 743804, email bob.ford@doncaster.gov.uk  BArBArA HOYLe, Tel 01302 742676, email Barbara.hoyle@doncaster. gov.uk YOUR LOCAL MP CAROLINE FLINT Meteor House, First Ave, Hayfield Lane, Auckley DN9 3GA.
