Note Fraser’s tailored fit, Timothy’s velvet jacket and Marco’s subtly textured jacket, and Adam's great-grandmother's vintage brooches, worn as boutonnieres.

Love is in the Air

And we all could use a little love. I have been privileged to have experienced that at many weddings in my day, but two recent nuptials really stood out. Both were intimate affairs, one at a vineyard with 75 people attending; the other, 50 of the couple’s nearest and dearest on a hotel rooftop. It wasn’t only the diminutive size of the events they had in common, it was the resolve that the guest list had great meaning to both parties. Not to say that those who didn’t make the cut weren’t as important to them; it’s just that on this day, these were the people they wanted most to be surrounded by. And surrounded they were, with their life’s primary cheerleaders.

Of course, who is to say that the same can’t be achieved with 10 people or 200 people or beyond? How we choose to celebrate our love is a choice that’s as varied as life itself. And, when so many couples choose to share their own romances with us here at Today’s Bride, we can’t help feeling the love. We receive photo galleries and stories of wedding day bliss daily, and we’re honoured that you’ve chosen to make us part of your cheerleading squad.

We may not be able to walk down the aisle with you, but we can help get you there, to cross the finish line on the way to the wonderful world of marriage. Love, in all its ways, wins.

HOW TO GET GORGEOUS HAIR, SKIN AND NAILS AHEAD OF YOUR WEDDING DAY.

It goes without saying that when it comes to maintaining healthy hair, skin and nails, preparation is key, particularly before your wedding. While a good skin- and hair-care routine is essential for brides and grooms hoping to look (and feel) their best, it’s also important to prioritize healthy habits such as eating clean and drinking enough water to see results in time for the big day.

PRO PROTEIN

Dr. Ashten Buck, certified naturopathic doctor and education manager for health food and supplement store Healthy Planet, says that achieving radiant beauty from within means understanding the importance of adequate protein intake. As a result, she suggests incorporating protein-rich foods and supplements such as grass-fed whey isolate, plant-based protein powders or essential amino acids (EAAs) into diets, which can all promote healthy hair, glowing skin and stronger nails.

TAKE YOUR VITAMINS

“Collagen Types 1 and 3 have been clinically shown to improve skin texture and tone, showcasing a more youthful, lively appearance,”

says Buck, adding that ample intake of vitamin C and antioxidants naturally supports collagen synthesis and combats oxidative stress. “To maintain hydrated and supple skin, they [brides and grooms] can embrace the benefits of hyaluronic acid, which can be taken internally or applied topically to help lock in moisture and ensure their beauty shines as brightly as their love on their special day.”

GO OMEGA

To promote stronger nails and hair growth, Buck recommends eating fatty fish like salmon, which can also be beneficial for maintaining hydrated, glowing skin. “Omega-3s help reduce inflammation, which can alleviate skin conditions like acne and eczema while supporting overall skin health,” she says.

“To maintain hydrated and supple skin, they [brides and grooms] can embrace the benefits of hyaluronic acid, which can be taken internally or applied topically to help lock in moisture and ensure their beauty shines as brightly as their love on their special day.”

ZINC IN

According to Buck, being deficient in zinc can lead to hair loss, brittle nails and skin problems. “Zinc is a mineral essential for healthy hair, skin and nails. It plays a crucial role in cell division, tissue growth and repair. Foods that are rich in zinc include oysters, beef, lentils and pumpkin seeds,” she notes. “Moringa’s zinc and vitamin E content also contribute to healthier nails by preventing brittleness and promoting growth,” she says, adding that moringa’s nutrients can help nourish the scalp, strengthen follicles and promote hair growth, while its amino acids support keratin production for strength. However, she adds that it’s important to consult with a practitioner before considering a natural health product.

WATCH YOUR DIET

When it comes to maintaining healthy skin, Lord Gavin McLeod-Valentine, celebrity facial masseur and global brand representative for Augustinus Bader, recommends brides and grooms eliminate sodium, sugar and dairy from their diets before their wedding. “They are notorious for creating inflammatory or reactor cascades on the skin, which is what we’re trying to avoid,” he says, and also suggests beginning any skin prep at least six months in advance.

“One of the most important things to remember is that this preparation is to set you up so that when you look back at your photos, you really lean into the emotional experience of the day and don’t look at yourself and critique,” McLeodValentine advises. “We’re doing this in order to get out of our own way, and to be fully alive and present during this special moment.”

No skincare routine is complete without SPF, which can help protect skin from sun damage ahead of the big day and beyond. Here are a few product recommendations brides and grooms can implement into their routines to keep skin hydrated and protected before, during and after the wedding day.

1. Nudestix Daily Mineral Veil SPF 30

A lightweight oil-free sunscreen lotion with tinted options.

2. Dr. Jart+ Every Sun Day™ Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+

A matte finish, physical sunscreen that is weightless, waterproof, and good for sensitive skin.

3. Dermalogica Invisible Physical Defense Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

An invisible, weightless defense that blends easily and features only non-nano Zinc Oxide.

4. Tatcha The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50

A weightless broad-spectrum SPF 50 mineral sunscreen.

5. ILIA C Beyond Triple Serum SPF 40

A 10 per cent encapsulated vitamin C meets mineral SPF 40.

CROWNING GLORY

1. Effortless curls or waves

THE EXPERT TAKE: “This season embraces effortless curls or waves, striking a balance between polished style and natural texture,” says Justin Rizzuto, creative director of Mane house of hair and L’Oréal Professional and Ys Park brand ambassador.

STEP 1: Apply a blow dry lotion like L’Oréal Professionnel Fluidifier or Bouncy & Tender to dry hair, ensuring thorough saturation of ends and porous areas.

STEP 2: Utilize a blow brush or diffuser technique, starting at the roots to add volume, then focusing on creating movement in the mid-lengths and ends.

STEP 3: Lightly mist hair with a setting spray such as L’Oréal Professionnel Pli. Using a curling iron, alternate wrapping sections of hair in different directions, ensuring to curl the ends for a more natural flow. For curly hair, employ the same method with an appropriately sized barrel to refine and enhance curls where needed.

2. Refined sleek low buns

THE EXPERT TAKE: “The trend towards sleeker buns has emerged alongside the simplicity of contemporary wedding dresses,” says Rizzuto. “With the rise of form-fitting, sheer wedding gowns in recent years, the silhouette of updos has followed suit, becoming more streamlined to complement the overall shape of the dress.”

STEP 1: Start by applying L’Oréal Professionnel Air Fix hairspray onto a styling brush. Begin brushing your hair upwards from the nape of your neck, gathering it into a low ponytail. Ensure to coat your ponytail with hairspray for added control.

STEP 2: With your ponytail in hand, tightly twist it from root to end. For a subtle effect, twist the entire ponytail as a single section; for a more dramatic look, divide the ponytail into two sections and twist each one individually.

STEP 3: Take each twisted section and wrap it around the base of your ponytail, securing with pins as you go. The aim is to create a narrow, refined bun, so perfection isn’t necessary, but the bun should maintain its sleek profile.

Justin Rizzuto/L Oréal

3. Curly cues

THE EXPERT TAKE: Oribe Official Brand Ambassador, Andrew Ly, gives us his expert tips on embracing your natural curls and adding texture and volume with these two looks.

STEP 1: On freshly washed and conditioned hair, apply Oribe Curl Gelée for Shine and Control on small sections of the hair.

STEP 2: Take the hair section with the product and twist each section around your finger to encourage the natural pattern of the curl. Lightly release without interrupting the curl and move onto the next section.

STEP 3: Allow hair to fully air dry.

STEP 4: Once hair is completely dry, apply Oribe Gold Lust Dry Heat Protection Spray from roots to ends to condition and nourish for silky soft strands.

STEP 5: Flip your head upside down, take your fingers and lightly massage your roots only to create volume without interrupting your beautiful curls.

4. Heatless braided waves

STEP 1: On freshly washed and towel dried hair, section into 2 inch squares. Twist each section and clip away.

STEP 2: Apply Oribe Hair Alchemy Heatless Styling Balm on to each section and braid from roots to ends. Secure the ends with a loose elastic and continue with the rest of the sections.

STEP 3: Allow hair to fully air dry.

STEP 4: Once the hair is completely dry, mist each section with Gold Lust Dry Heat Protection Spray to condition from roots to ends.

STEP 5: Gently undo the braids and separate the braids with your fingers. Style to your liking.

5. Put a bow on it

THE EXPERT TAKE: The “it” hair accessory of the year, bows are the perfect embellishment, and there’s no better time to show one off than at a wedding. To flaunt the look, it’s best to use products that deliver extra smoothness and shine, bringing out the best of natural hair.

HOW TO: Make sure hair is smooth and free from flyaways. Start with a lightweight and oil-free formula that will leave your hair fresh, conditioned and silky-smooth such as TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Weightless Leave-In Lotion. Finish with Keratin Smooth Weightless Shine Serum. —Vivian Vassos

The details: A palette from traditional white to the full spectrum of spring colours, from pale blue to vivid purple; lace overlays, corseted bodices and flowing skirts.

The details: Each gown demands between 30 to 40 hours of creation; exquisite tailoring that celebrates the female form and elegant silhouettes draped in soft silks and delicate laces; built-in corseted, structured gowns; minimalist designs, ruching, basque waists, volume, ruffles and detachable lace sleeves.

Mira Zwillinger – Reflections

“The collection was created with a strong will to remind ourselves and others that beauty and tenderness exist all around us,” say Mira and Lihi Zwillinger, the mother-daughter design team behind the label.

The details: Rich and flowy gowns with elements that echo from the gowns themselves, and change their shape in every movement.

The details: Voluptuous skirts with giant three-dimensional florals, ruffles and flounces; silk organza ruffles and flowers; silk nylon organza, Italian tulle, ultra-feminine bows, embellished motifs, transforming and multiplelooks: removable underskirts, overskirts, trains and bows; black with contrasting white embroidery; silk gazar.

The Designer’s Take

We asked Mikaella Bernstein at Paloma Blanca and Mikaella Bridal to give us her expert view on what’s next in bridal trends.

1 HALTER NECKLINES are set to shine in 2025! They are perfect for brides who want to flaunt their shoulders and arms, while feeling secure in a supportive neckline. Whether you’re a modern minimalist or embracing a more classic aesthetic, halter necklines effortlessly complement a variety of bridal styles. Brides are falling in love with this silhouette’s timeless charm and modern appeal, making it a top pick for the upcoming bridal season.

2 DROP WAISTS are making a strong comeback, offering a flattering, elongated profile that is both elegant and modern. By extending the bodice to the hips, this style creates a seamless flow into the skirt, making it an excellent choice for brides who seek a balance of structure and fluidity. The drop waist is particularly flattering for brides looking to highlight their natural curves without sacrificing comfort. Not only are drop waists incredibly versatile, complementing both traditional and modern wedding themes, but they also pair beautifully with a variety of fabrics and embellishments.

3 TEXTURED FABRICS such as brocade and printed organza, are gaining popularity as a major trend in 2025, adding a unique and luxurious touch to both traditional and contemporary bridal designs. Ideal for brides who appreciate intricate detailing, these fabrics promise to elevate your wedding day ensemble, whether you lean towards classic elegance or modern flair, ensuring you shine with effortless style and grace.

4 CONVERTIBLE STYLES with the ability to offer two distinct looks in one dress, are revolutionizing bridal fashion. These versatile designs allow brides to effortlessly transition from ceremony to reception, without the need for a full outfit change Ideal for the modern bride who values practicality without compromising on style, convertible styles provide a seamless blend of elegance for a dramatic entrance and comfort for a relaxed reception.

5 SLITS have evolved from a trend to a staple in bridal fashion. Whether subtly daring or boldly dramatic, slits offer a contemporary look with a captivating twist. At Paloma Blanca and Mikaella Bridal, we’ve long embraced the versatility of slits, recognizing a growing preference among brides for their ability to blend elegance with a touch of contemporary charm. Perfect for enhancing both the aesthetic and practicality of any wedding ensemble, ensuring you feel radiant and unrestricted as you celebrate your love story.

Basque-ing In It

One of the standout trends for 2025 is the return of the Basque waist, says Bernstein. “Known for its distinctive V-shaped waistline, this style captures the hearts of brides seeking a timeless yet striking bridal look. Whether you prefer voluminous skirts or a more streamlined design, the Basque waist is perfect for accentuating the waist and creating a polished silhouette.” It was fitting that at Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week, the Basque look, named for the northern region of Spain where it has its origins, was a top trend.

What’s next for menswear and wedding attire?

VIVIAN VASSOS ASKED CYNTHIA FLOREK, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AT TIP TOP AND STYLE EXPERT, TO GIVE US HER TOP TIPS.

“It’s about evolution not revolution, especially in men’s suiting. Colour will definitely be a major influence going forward and isn’t slowing down,” says Florek. Another key to your look on your big day? Florek recommends suiting your personal style: A slim fit suit, which is designed a little closer to the body, or a modern fit, which is more generous through the arms, chest and leg for a roomier fit.

Vivian Vassos: What are some upcoming trends for wedding menswear?

Cynthia Florek: Wedding menswear fashion has flourished over the years with more grooms and groomsmen embracing colour. There seems to be two strong palettes that have emerged as favourites. The ’70s-inspired, jewel-toned palette encapsulates rich and deep hues like forest green, teal, burgundy and rust.

VV: And for those who might be a little hesitant to go bold?

CF: Pastel tones like light pink, lavender and powder blue are a popular choice. Gone are the days where only the bridesmaids could pull off the ‘ombre’ dress trend, where the dresses are all different pastel shades, but the groom’s party is in one colour. Now the entire wedding party can participate, no matter what shade, the suits can match up with the bridesmaids – which also makes for an unforgettable wedding photo op!

VV: What do you think 2025 wedding menswear will look like?

CF: Whether you are team jewel tone or team pastel, one styling technique we cannot forget is the “colour drenching” we see happening on the runways and the red carpets. This is when you choose a monochromatic look by

wearing one colour from head to toe, which looks chic and elevates your look. Matching your shirt and accessories to your suit makes a statement, especially when you choose an unconventional colour like forest green or purple.

VV: What about grooms who want to add a little fun and personal style?

CF: Try texture and pattern. Jacquards are also a popular choice for a tuxedo jacket, which offers a step up from a classic tuxedo blazer. If you want something a little more subtle, then try to add texture with accessories in the same colour family, such as a

HAVE LOVE, WILL TRAVEL

Destination wedding packing for the groom needs an expert strategy. Here, Florek gives us a few ideas for a getaway wedding.

Be Fearless: Play With Colour

Destination weddings can take you about anywhere these days, but if you’re heading somewhere hot, there are some things to keep in mind to help you prepare. Have some fun with your colour choice! A tropical setting can inspire you to choose a lighter or brighter coloured suit. You can try switching up outfits from day to night by transitioning lighter colours like light pink or sage green for deeper, richer tones like forest green or burgundy.

Jacket Not Always Required: Vested Interest

A great way to diversify your look is opting for a vest in lieu of a blazer so you can dress according to weather. For those looking for more subtle changes, accessories and ties are an easy way to change up your look. Ties can sometimes feel restricting in the heat. I suggest swapping the tie for a pocket square to add some flare and keep comfort top of mind. Floral pins are another simple accessory that don’t take up much space in your luggage.

Stress Less: Pack Light

When packing for a destination wedding, it’s always best to choose light and breathable materials. It’s also recommended to pack clothing that doesn’t easily wrinkle. Packing your suit in a suit bag will help reduce wrinkles and stains while keeping every piece fresh and put together, just like you packed it.

CountryRomance

Take a cue from fashion’s latest love affair – a stylish marriage of boho-chic meets wild west – from cowgirl fringe and bolero jackets to saloon-girl ruffles and lace bandanas. Romantic florals and ornate embroidery add to the vintage charm.

THINKING Feel-Good

Thoughtful

choices – from wedding-party dresses that will be put on repeat to repurposed wedding bands and antique diamonds.

The Unbridesmaid Bridesmaid

“Individuality is key,” says Zoe Tisshaw, the co-founder of design house Park & Fifth, which specializes in wedding, bridesmaid and occasion dressing, when it comes to the current bridal/ formal trends. “We’re seeing a lot of dropped-waist silhouettes and high necks. Colour palettes are soft – think pale blues, yellows and peach.” Sustainability is also a big consideration, Tisshaw adds. “So many brides want to have greener weddings and are making eco-conscious choices when it comes to dresses and fabrics.”

Tisshaw on her Unbridesmaid inspiration: “When we first started Park & Fifth back in 2016, there was a cultural stigma around being a bridesmaid. Women didn’t want to spend all this money on a dress that they may never wear again. We want being a bridesmaid to be a positive thing. All the pieces in our Unbridesmaid collection are designed with intention – we want women to feel and look amazing in our dresses, and carry them forward in their wardrobe for future events.” Tisshaw and her team also stay on top of the current trends in the wider fashion landscape. “We’re moving away from silhouettes that feel too ‘bridesmaidy’ and are favouring styles that are a bit more fashion forward,” she says. It doesn’t mean you can’t have a full skirt, but we want the pieces to feel flattering and versatile. Dresses can be styled with blazers, leather jackets or boots for a whole new look.”

Put a Ring on it

If you’re looking for “something old” but want to make it new (read modern) again, vintage wedding bands and antique diamonds might be the way to go. It’s a sustainable choice, and also the mission behind Brockton Gems, a female-owned jewellery shop in Toronto, where Taren Wilkins – owner, jewellery designer and expert gemologist – sources rare antique diamonds “that would have been cut by hand more than 100 years ago, without the use of modern machinery, imaging or lasers.” Aside from curating the Brockton Gems’ collection of vintage jewelry, the designer also works under her By Brockton line, where she repurposes antique diamonds in modern settings and, where possible, uses recycled gold when crafting wedding bands to complement your engagement ring.

A Homestead Wedding

For Alya and Mitch, home is where the heart is, which is why when it came time to decide where to have their September 2023 wedding, they only had one place in mind: Mitch’s family homestead in Saskatchewan, where his great-grandfather first settled after immigrating from Germany. The end result was a gorgeous, classic affair that infused love for family and the land at every turn.

LET'S GO FOR A RIDE! It’s impossible for Alya and Mitch to pick just one special moment from their wedding day, but if they had to choose, it would be taking the family’s vintage blue Bronco for a spin around the homestead after saying their vows. It was a fun, private moment they shared, just the two of them, before celebrating with 300 of their family and friends.

CLASSIC DETAILS

The couple wanted a “clean, classic look” for their wedding, sticking to a black and white colour scheme complemented by Italian ruscus, leatherleaf and baby’s breath. Live trees, branches and an assortment of white flowers were also used to bring the outside in. They wanted the land to speak for itself, so that historic family memories would shine through at all times.

Family Above All Else

Janelle and Jordan’s September 2022 wedding was a chance for them to honour family. Not only did they say “I do” at his mother’s home in Coldstream, New Brunswick, Janelle and her bridesmaids got ready for the big day at her grandparents’ 100-year-old farmhouse in nearby Red Bridge. The icing on the cake? Her mother got ready for her own wedding 30 years prior at the same family farmhouse.

A TOUCH OF WHIMSY

“We wanted to achieve a whimsical and elegant look inspired by Bill and Fleur’s wedding in Harry Potter, with lots of lavender, emerald and gold accents,” says Janelle. The couple used wildflowers from the wedding grounds in their décor, as well as Pink Lilies, Purple Delphinium, White Ranunculus, Gerbers and Craspedia.

A GOOD BALANCE

The couple wanted the perfect “just us” moment, so they chose to say private vows to each other in a field separate from the wedding ceremony and reception. Afterward, they dined familystyle with 80 of their closest friends and family, serving their favourite meats, cheeses and their very own homemade red pepper jelly on six-foot-long charcuterie boards.

A Wedding and Vacation in One

If you ask Catherine and Michael what they had envisioned for their June 2023 wedding, they would say, “A sprinkle of wedding mixed with a generous dose of vacation.” And boy, did they deliver! The couple tied the knot at Hotel Torre Fiore in Pisticci, Italy, turning their dreamy nuptials into a three-day getaway with 45 of their closest friends and family.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LINDSEY DRENNAN PHOTOGRAPHY WEDDING COORDINATION BY JESSICA ROSANO

A FAMILY AFFAIR

Being a tight-knit family, the couple's two children and all nine of their nieces and nephews played a role in the wedding, from playing guitar to reciting lines from their favourite Rumi poem.

MANGIA, MANGIA!

Guests were treated to a pasta-making class before enjoying a three-course dinner paired with exquisite wines from the area. "We wanted to showcase the rich gastronomic heritage of Italy," says Catherine.

FEELIN' HOT, HOT, HOT

The day of the wedding reached a scorching 38 degrees, one of the hottest days on record for June. "The party ended in the pool with most of our guests still in full wedding attire," says Catherine. "It was one of the best moments of the day, everyone still talks about it!"

How to Plan an OUTDOOR WEEKEND WEDDING

Whether you’re designing a rustic camp wedding or an elegant garden affair, let the fun of family, beauty of nature and the meaning of flowers enhance your special day.

Photography: Katy Maclachlan @katymaclachlan | Venue: Camp Timberlane, Harley Hayman @camptimberlane Floral designer: Perfect Petals Muskoka @perfectpetalsmuskoka | Wedding Coordinator: Julia Ludwig, Events by Jules @events.by.jules | Sarah’s gown: Made with Love; The Modern Bride, Guelph, Ont., @themodernbride | Sarah’s jewellery: Melanie Auld

Choosing a summer camp as their wedding venue perfectly reflects Sarah and Michael Duncan’s love story, which flourished during the pandemic. Their passion for hiking, portaging and camping influenced every aspect of their wedding. By hosting their celebration at Camp Timberlane in Haliburton, Ont., in September 2023, they crafted a weekend that seamlessly blended nature, adventure and heartfelt moments, embodying their shared affection for the great outdoors.

Embrace the Outdoor Venue

Sarah emphasized the best part of a camp wedding is its simplicity. “Everyone was there to have a good time, and there was something for everyone,” she noted. The 120 guests stayed in cozy cabins and participated in activities like basketball, tennis, kayaking and canoeing. Meals were served in the camp’s mess hall or under the open sky at picnic tables, with s’mores kits adding a nostalgic touch to the Friday night bonfire. The couple envisioned a weekend where guests could disconnect from their daily routines and immerse themselves in nature. “We were blessed with sunshine all weekend long, and our guests fully embraced the camp experience,” the couple reminisces. “With limited Wi-Fi, it was a chance for everyone to reconnect with nature and each other.” Sarah also highlighted the value of surrounding yourself with people who share similar values of being adventurous and inclusive.

Decorate With a Natural Aesthetic

Nature served as the primary inspiration for the wedding decor, with flowers playing a central role in creating a harmonious and authentic ambience. As guests walked through the woods to the ceremony

site by the lake, they were greeted by floral arrangements that mirrored the early autumn’s changing leaves and natural colours of the surroundings. This thoughtful integration of nature and florals set the stage for a celebration that felt both magical and meaningful.

Use Locally Grown Flowers to Tell Your Story

To enhance both the beauty and sustainability of your wedding, choose locally grown flowers and work with a local florist. This supports the community and reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting flowers from distant locations. Nicole, a local floral designer from Perfect Petals Muskoka, helped bring Sarah’s vision for the bouquets to life. The curated selection of ranunculus, dahlias, scabiosa, roses and baby’s breath in shades of pale blush, whites and dusty mauve used in Sarah and Michael’s wedding complemented the setting and helped to transform the ceremony into a deeply personal and visually stunning narrative.

Add Something Old to Something New

One of the most touching floral moments was a surprise from Sarah’s mom: a photo charm of Sarah’s late grandmother tied to her bouquet. “My Grandma, or ‘Gram’ as I called her, was always my biggest cheerleader,” Sarah says. “The charm symbolized her everlasting love and support, and I felt her presence throughout the celebration.” This sentimental touch added an extra layer of emotional depth to the ceremony, making the flowers a poignant reminder of family and enduring love.

PLANAHEAD TIPS

Use Sarah's essential checklist to help your wedding weekend go off without a hitch – except the part where you get hitched!

1. Do the Details

“If you are planning a full weekend celebration, don’t underestimate all the extra details and logistics –meals, cabin assignments, ensuring guests with special circumstances are comfortable and creating maps of the property.”

2. Go Digital

“Have a comprehensive wedding website/invitation that outlines the wedding and what is involved. Given that it is a slightly non-traditional venue and will be a new experience for many of your guests, they will likely have questions. Try to be as clear as you can about your vision.”

3. Connect with Staff

“Make sure you are comfortable with your primary point of contact. We had a great experience with Harley and the Camp Timberlane staff, and we knew from our first discussion with Harley how important it would be to him that our wedding was everything we wanted.”

4. Hire a Fabulous Wedding Planner

“Our event coordinator, Julia, was an absolute pleasure to work with. She eased my stress and anxieties during the wedding planning process and the day of. Asking our planner for an online workbook outlining the entire day’s timing, organizing contacts, and accounting for all decor kept us perfectly on schedule.”

Get to Know Your Vendors

Planning a wedding weekend requires careful consideration and a great team. Sarah and Michael found invaluable support from Camp Timberlane’s staff and their event coordinator, Julia Ludwig from Events by Jules. “Harley and his team at Camp Timberlane made the planning process enjoyable, allowing us to tour the campgrounds and envision everything,” Sarah says. “Julia was exceptional in bringing our vision to life.”

Personalize Your Petals

Flowers hold a profound significance in weddings, going beyond mere decoration to convey the essence of love, tradition and personal stories. Each bloom is symbolic – roses for romance, lilies for purity, daisies for innocence – adding layers of meaning to the celebration. Thoughtfully selected floral arrangements have luscious colour and texture and can reflect a couple’s journey, cultural heritage and individual personalities. Whether it's your bouquet, table decor or the flowers surrounding you when you say “I do,” it’s important to incorporate elements that work with nature, have a light footprint on the environment and reflect your personal style and wedding theme. Here’s how:

CHOOSE MEANINGFUL FLOWERS. Select flowers that are significant to you and your partner. Consider using blooms with special meaning, such as flowers from your first date location or those representing your cultural heritage.

REFLECT YOUR WEDDING THEME. Coordinate your flower choices with your wedding theme and colour scheme. Whether your theme is rustic, romantic, modern, or bohemian, choose flowers and greenery that complement – not overpower – the overall aesthetic of your wedding.

ADD PERSONAL TOUCHES. Personalize arrangements by incorporating family heirlooms, sentimental trinkets, or meaningful charms into the bouquet or centrepiece design. Enhance your arrangements with unique accents like feathers, berries, or succulents to add interest and personality to your floral designs.

OPT FOR SEASONAL BLOOMS. Use seasonal flowers to ensure freshness. Opting for flowers that are in season supports local growers and reduces costs. In addition, let your florist know that you would like to avoid floral foam and plastic packaging to reduce waste.

CHOOSE STURDY FLOWERS FOR BOUTONNIÈRES AND CORSAGES. The guests who wear flowers are usually the people at the wedding party and the closest family. They are also the ones who will be hugging and be hugged the most, so choose flowers like roses or carnations that can get a little “squishing” and still look fresh.

MIX AND MATCH GREENERY. Experiment with different types of greenery to add texture and depth to your bouquets and centrepieces. Mix various in-season foliage, such as silver-grey dusty miller, deep green ferns, or chartreuse-hued herbs, for a lush and organic feel.

DIY OR COLLABORATE WITH A FLORIST? DIY options can be more costeffective and allow for greater personalization, while working with a florist ensures professional expertise and execution.

Keep Calm and Marry On!

How to say “I Do” with as little stress as possible.

Planning your wedding can be one of the most joyous experiences you will share as a couple. This also means sharing in the challenges if and when they arise. In the excitement of creating a lifetime of memories, you may be faced with the daunting task of having to balance your personal desires with family expectations, especially when it comes to matters of faith, culture and tradition. Here are some helpful tips from The Marry Men on how to say “I do” to a stress-free wedding to ensure your wedding day is the harmonious celebration of love you deserve it to be.

HAVE “THE TALK”

Successful wedding planning depends on open and honest communication. Sit down with your partner to discuss your individual expectations, desires, and nuptial nonnegotiables. A “divide and conquer” approach to checking off the checklist will go a long way. Remember, it takes two to tie the knot.

TAKE NO “SHOULDS” FROM ANYONE

Identify your priorities, but avoid the “shoulds,” “musts,” and “have to’s.” Those are age-old stops on the proverbial guilt trip. Steer clear of roadblocks on your journey by identifying the aspects of your wedding that hold the most significance to both you and your families. But take no “should” from anyone and make the day your very

TO THINE OWN SELVES BE TRUE

Your wedding day is about you, so stay true to yourselves as individuals and as a couple. Your wedding day should be a reflection of your unique love story, filled with moments that resonate with authenticity and joy. Trust your instincts, embrace the journey, and cherish the memories you create along the way.

PICK YOUR BATTLES

Chances are your families have been thinking about your wedding long before you met your partner. Sometimes the enthusiasm of eager family members can be more anxiety-inducing than helpful. But don't underestimate the value of seeking their advice. Listen to their perspectives and consider inviting parents, grandparents and other relatives to contribute, participate and support you in your wedding planning. Seek their guidance and try to find common ground. Sometimes family members only need to think they have input.

SET BOUNDARIES, NOT BARRIERS

Weddings have a way of turning up the volume on people’s personalities. Setting clear boundaries will help to preserve your sanity and well-being as you plan your big day. Communicate your decisions politely but firmly to assert your intentions of creating a wedding that is authentic and meaningful to you as a couple.

HONOUR YOUR HERITAGE

Your wedding is an opportunity to celebrate the richness of your heritage and reflect a fusion of your identities. From incorporating traditional attire to symbolic unity rituals, be open to suggestions on how to respectfully integrate different traditions to ensure both families will feel included and honoured.

SAY “I DO” WHILE SAYING “I DON’T”

Compromise is key when it comes to balancing family expectations with personal wishes. Customize rituals to suit the vibe of your wedding. Find creative ways to mention, modify or modernize family customs or faith traditions and reassure your families that you value their input. Emphasize unity and inclusivity throughout the planning process and strive to find common ground that honours everyone’s perspectives.

INTERVENTION: WHEN TO ASK THE EXPERTS

If tensions escalate or disagreements become overwhelming, don't hesitate to seek guidance from a professional wedding planner. Or consider asking your officiant to step in. They can provide unbiased advice, mediate conflicts and offer creative solutions to help you navigate complex family dynamics with grace.

You can create a wedding that honours your past, celebrates your present and lays the foundation for a beautiful future together. Let your love guide you.

OF MIND Peace

A few reasons why wellness retreats can be a great alternative to bachelor(ette) parties.

When it comes to bachelor(ette) parties, many brides and grooms often get caught up in the idea that one size fits all. While many bridesmaids and groomsmen do enjoy going out for a night on the town and basking in the glory of drinking wedding-themed cocktails with the bridal party, more people are finding ways to kick the conventional party to the curb and embrace ideas that make for a more relaxing bonding experience ahead of the big day.

Cue: wellness retreats. Over the years, these types of getaways have become increasingly popular for a variety of reasons. From the mental health benefits of being one with nature to exploring ways to get physically fit, retreats can be an excellent alternative for brides and grooms who would like to prioritize their health and wellbeing and centre themselves before their wedding day.

Tanya Kololian and Zoë Paliare, co-owners of trove (trovewellbeing.com), a wellness shop in Toronto offering

“A wellness retreat will allow you to fill your own cup and feel your best, so you can show up fully recharged, glowing and present for the magic of your wedding day.”

products and services for the mind, body and soul, say that wellness retreats can be great opportunities to de-stress and connect with the bridal party. “A wellness retreat is a wonderful way to invite yourself and those around you to slow down, connect and unwind ahead of your big day. The only decision that needs to be made is the intention of your gathering,” they add. “A wellness retreat will allow you to fill your own cup and feel your best, so you can show up fully recharged, glowing and present for the magic of your wedding day. When we take a true pause from the endless pre-wedding to-do lists and chaos, we are able to access parts of ourselves that are often otherwise blocked.”

Aside from providing a unique bonding experience, wellness retreats can be an effective way to ease any nerves associated with planning or even pre-wedding jitters. They can also provide a more budgetfriendly option for brides and grooms who don’t want members of their bridal parties taking too much time off work or paying for costly all-inclusive trips.

In terms of services and treatments that can support stress reduction during wellness retreats, Kololian and Paliare suggest massages, facials, red light therapy, breathwork, sound baths or IV drips, all of which are offered at trove. “These down-regulating and rejuvenating self-care practices lead to healthier cells and a calmer nervous system,” they say, acknowledging that brides and grooms have likely spent months wedding planning. “From this restored and fueled place, the bridal party is sure to show up fully on the big day, ready to dance the night away.”

Something Blue

The blue and gold colour scheme is an elegant choice, while lending itself well to a minimal, micro wedding – the trend of a more intimate affair that shows no sign of abating. Dusty blue furniture and subtle hints of blue in the bride’s bouquet, and on the menu (think blueberries and blackberries as eyecatching and healthy bites) matched with gold and green accents decorating the tables, bring the look together in a delicate, yet elevated way.

Create an ambience of tranquility, sentiment and joy, while preserving the tradition and elegance of an intimate wedding setting. Choose a cozy country inn vibe, but up the neutral-hue chic factor with a minimalist mix of white roses and other florals with verdant green accents that set a charming table and the mood. Staying Connected

Include those unable to attend your destination wedding with these fun

and easy ideas

Not everyone will be able to attend your destination wedding – and that’s okay. With airfare and accommodation adding up to hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, no one is obligated to attend, nor should you expect them to. But you can still make those unable to make the trip feel special and included in your big day. With these small gestures, family and friends at home can stay connected to you and the festivities, even from thousands of miles away.

Carve out a few minutes throughout your wedding day to Facetime loved ones at home. Find a quiet corner after the ceremony and during the reception to call and share the excitement of the day. You can also ask a guest at the wedding to Facetime your loved ones during special moments, like the vows, the first dance or your speech, so that they can watch the action unfold in real time.

HASHTAG IT

Create a hashtag for your wedding and encourage guests at home to follow it on social media platforms. They’ll then be able to view photos and videos that you and your guests in destination upload throughout the day.

TAKE NOTES

Mail out blank cards with return postage to guests staying behind and ask them to write down a few words of advice for a happy marriage. Reading them aloud during your reception is a great way to celebrate their presence in your life. They’ll also double as a special keepsake when stored in a beautiful album or box.

LIVE STREAM

Many hotels and resorts offer live-streaming services as part of their wedding packages. Check with your chosen accommodation to see if they can set up a live feed of either your ceremony, your reception or both. Alternatively, you can ask a trusted guest to live-stream the day for you; all they’ll need is a camera, streaming software, a microphone, computer and good Internet connection. Then simply send the video link to loved ones back home.

SONG REQUESTS

Ask guests who are unable to attend to send you their song requests ahead of the big day, to play during your reception. Whether you’ve hired a DJ or created a playlist of your own, including their song requests is a fun way to get them involved. When their song comes on, Facetime them so they can dance along in real time.

THE AFTER-PARTY

Of course, there’s nothing like celebrating in person, in real time, so why not throw a minireception upon your return home for those unable to attend the actual wedding? Whether you have an intimate backyard barbecue or a more formal, sit-down reception, an at-home after-party is the perfect way to celebrate your nuptials with everyone who matter most to you.

‘FACE TO FACE’

GREEN MILE Going the Extra

THESE ECO-FRIENDLY HOTELS AND RESORTS CAN HELP BRIDES AND GROOMS ENJOY THEIR SPECIAL DAY WHILE AT THE SAME TIME MINIMIZE THEIR CARBON FOOTPRINT

Green is the new white, at least when it comes to destination weddings.

With sustainability being top of mind for many, more brides and grooms planning destination weddings are prioritizing hotels and resorts whose sustainability practices align with their environmental values and social responsibility.

Tiffany Bell, senior destination wedding planner, Luxe Destination Weddings, says that sustainable weddings are a growing trend, for many reasons like environmental awareness, a desire for authenticity, social media influence and even cost savings.

“Sustainable weddings are gaining in popularity as couples increasingly prioritize environmental and social responsibility on their special day. These weddings aim to minimize the negative impact on the planet while still celebrating love and commitment in a meaningful way,” says Bell.

According to Bell, choosing sustainable hotels enables couples to not only contribute to the preservation of the environment, but also set an example for their guests by demonstrating that luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand.

“It's a powerful way to create lasting memories while making a positive impact on the planet,” she says, adding that many hotels are now embracing low or zero-waste initiatives and programs that give back as part of their commitment to environmental stewardship. “Couples seeking a sustainable approach to their wedding should consider hotels that share their values, not only for the wedding itself but also for the entirety of their guests' stay.”

From large weddings in a tropical paradise to intimate ceremonies in a more private oasis, these eco-friendly hotels and resorts across the world have found ways to help brides and grooms make a positive impact on the planet while celebrating their special day.

La Valise Tulum, Mexico

Nestled in a biodiverse habitat, La Valise Tulum believes that true luxury lies in one’s connection to nature. The hotel’s eco-friendly practices include prohibiting single-use plastics, composting waste, recycling and sourcing local ingredients. In hopes of inspiring intentional travel experiences that prioritize sustainability and respect for the natural world, the hotel also provides guests with environmentally-friendly toiletries, repellent, and reef-safe sunscreen. As part of its commitment to Tulum’s preservation, the hotel also invites guests to sign the Tulum Pledge, a promise to leave Tulum “better than they found it,” which can be great for brides and grooms looking to give back and make a difference during their stay.

For a more exclusive experience, the hotel also offers brides and grooms the option to reserve the entire property for their wedding so that they can fully immerse themselves in the moment and enjoy the occasion with their loved ones.

Green Fig Resort & Spa – St. Lucia

In order to reduce its environmental footprint, Green Fig Resort & Spa in St. Lucia uses solar panels to reduce purchased energy by 33 per cent so far, as well as high efficiency inverter-type air conditioners. The resort contains a rainwater collection for landscape watering and pools and its hot water heaters are solar-driven. The bathrooms are water efficient, while soap, shampoo and conditioner dispensers reduce plastic waste. The resort also prioritizes plastic bottle recycling and donates food waste to a local farm. And to reduce carbon emissions and keep the air clean, it doesn’t burn any trash or landscaping waste from the property.

Outdoor lighting on light sensors also ensure lights are on only when needed, which can help create a warm ambience for outdoor weddings. Many rooms also feature doublepane windows for energy efficiency and noise abatement, which can be great for postwedding relaxation.

Caerula Mar Club – The Bahamas

Caerula Mar Club is located on South Andros, one of The Bahamas’ largest – but least –inhabited islands. Nestled on 10 acres of turquoise beach, this boutique luxury resort offers guests an environmentally-conscious spot for a sustainable wedding. Suites and private villas on the property are made from sustainable materials and run on solar power. They are also stocked with 100 per cent recyclable materials in lieu of plastics and reefsafe bath products and sunscreen.

The on-site restaurants work with local farmers and fishermen to source ingredients, which is great for those who are conscious of where their food comes from. Along with opportunities to relax by the pool or under the shade of palm trees and explore on complimentary bicycles, the resort also offers guests sustainability-focused excursions that wedding couples can book for their entire wedding party once the wedding is over.

Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort – Aruba

While Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort only hosts micro-weddings with up to four people including the bride and groom, it offers a service that streams the ceremony to family members and friends, ensuring that loved ones at home don’t miss out. Rather than being a destination for large weddings and big groups, this resort aims to be an intimate retreat for couples who wish to elope or celebrate with only each other before having a larger reception back home.

With the resort’s cornerstones being romance, wellness and sustainability, its passion for love and the planet go hand in hand. Couples can rest assured knowing that they’re contributing to a greener future during their stay, thanks to a long list of sustainable measures that includes renewable energy, solar-heated hot water, electricity-generating fitness equipment that converts burned calories to kilowatts for the resort's power grid, an interactive sea turtle testing and hatchlings calendar, and monthly guest and staff beach cleanups.

To further reduce environmental impact at the hotel, Tiffany Bell, senior destination wedding planner, Luxe Destination Weddings, suggests eliminating unnecessary waste with centrepieces, opting for non-floral options or beeswax candles, and ensuring any décor on the beach or grass is biodegradable. For wedding favours, Bell also suggests sustainable options such as reusable tumblers, cups, straws and more to enjoy throughout the week.

“For destination wedding couples, gifts are not always feasible, so why not opt to have your guests make a donation to an ecoconscious initiative you love?” she adds. “One of our favourite ways to celebrate is to treat your guests to an excursion that highlights eco-friendly options in destination, either pre- or post-wedding.”

Six Senses Yao Noi – Thailand

If you’re looking for an eco-friendly wedding option in Southeast Asia, look no further than Six Senses Yao Noi. From the use of natural materials in the architecture of all villas, to its Clean Water Project and drinking water treatment, the resort puts sustainability at the heart of all its offerings. Plus, its partnership with the Thailand Hornbill Project aims to protect the Oriental Pied Hornbill, the most iconic wildlife on the island whose population has dwindled throughout the years. Couples and animal lovers will delight in seeing these gorgeous, canopy-dwelling birds around the resort. While weddings at Six Senses Yao Noi are typically small and intimate, the resort’s elevated pool villas feature views ranging from tropical settings to panoramic ocean vistas, provide a relaxing experience for couples interested in eloping or celebrating with a small group of loved ones.

Hyatt Regency – Cape Town

Located in the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town, South Africa, in the colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood, this hotel comes with the added bonus of having Table Mountain as a natural backdrop for one-ofa-kind destination weddings. To protect the local environment and set a positive example for guests and the community, the hotel has implemented various sustainable practices such as waste management and water preservation. It also uses solar PV panels and heat pumps for hot water, efficient shower heads, taps and a flush system, and prioritizes recycling and food separation to minimize waste. LED bulbs and tubes are used throughout the property, along with dimming systems and motion sensors in certain areas.

Between the cuisine, elegant rooms and terrace pool with views of Cape Town city centre and Signal Hill, the hotel’s contemporary interiors can accommodate small, intimate ceremonies as well as larger, more lavish celebrations.

Turndown SERVICE

SURPRISE YOUR DESTINATION WEDDING GUESTS WITH SMALL GIFTS IN THEIR ROOM EACH NIGHT

There’s nothing better than returning to your hotel room after a long day of sightseeing and finding your bed freshly made, your pillows fluffed and a small chocolate or single flower on the nightstand. Turndown service, now a standard at luxury hotels, has long been a way to show appreciation for guests and provide exceptional comfort. In that same spirit, couples having destination weddings are finding fun and creative ways to make turndown service a nightly ritual for their own guests. Here are some of our favourite ideas.

Something delicious.

Highlight your chosen destination by gifting your guests with a local treat. In the Caribbean? Pick up some plantain chips or coconut cookies at the local market. Getting married in Europe? Wrap up individual chocolates and leave one on guests’ pillows. Other yummy ideas include caramel popcorn, candied nuts, chocolate bars, artisanal jams and tropical fruits. Whatever you give, the key is to keep it small, a tasty teaser for the following night’s delight.

Something fun.

Ensure your guests have a ball at your destination wedding by leaving a fun trinket in their room. This can be an inflatable beach ball stamped with your initials, a deck of cards emblazoned with your engagement photos, retro candy reminiscent of days from childhood, or a bottle of bubbles and bubble wand customized with your wedding date. You can also opt for a mini bottle of liqueur, a travel-sized board game or a monogrammed frisbee.

Something practical.

There’s bound to be something your guests will have forgotten to pack for your destination wedding. Make sure the essentials are covered by leaving a travelsized bottle of sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, shampoo or body lotion on their nightstand. Other good ideas include earplugs, an eye mask, hairbrush or a portable charger. Dress these items up with a pretty bow and a handwritten note on heavy card stock.

Something about

you.

Say something about you and your partner with a small token inspired by your shared history, culture or interests. Whether you love to travel, drink wine or met on a golf course, little gifts like personalized luggage tags, coasters or a pack of golf tees are a great way to share your love story with your guests. Attach a small note describing the meaning behind the gift for an extra special touch.

With its natural beauty, warm and welcoming culture, delicious cuisine and rich musical heritage, Jamaica has all the ingredients for a dream wedding.

From incorporating local traditions like ‘jumping the broom,’ which symbolizes sweeping away the old and welcoming in the new as a married couple, to food and entertainment that features local chefs, artists and dancers, there are plenty of ways for couples to add a touch of Jamaican culture to their special day.

But don’t just take our word for it. Jamaica is consistently recognized as a top wedding destination by Canadian travel agents. Says Angella Bennett, Regional Director, Canada of the Jamaica Tourist Board: “Jamaica is a destination synonymous with romance. Couples from around the world have chosen the island as their preferred destination for weddings, honeymoons, elopements, proposals and romantic getaways. It’s a place where visitors can reignite their passion while making memories together, from young lovers to old flames.”

Bennett credits Jamaica’s wide array of world-class hotels, exciting excursions, luxury spas and beautiful landscapes for its longstanding reputation for being a romance destination. In addition to all-inclusive resort properties, Jamaica is home to incredible private villas and

unique event venues for bespoke personalized wedding ceremonies and receptions. Couples can also take advantage of a network of experienced wedding planners and industry suppliers, from tailors and chefs, to musicians and florists. Plus, Jamaica’s impressive infrastructure of resources makes getting married a smooth and seamless process, even if tying the knot at the last minute.

“Couples can be married within 24 hours of arrival on the island, and applying for a marriage licence is a simple process that requires minimal cost and documentation,” says Bennett.

As for beyond the “I do’s,” Jamaica continues to be top of mind among honeymooners, particularly its western coastline where Negril beckons with its laidback vibe, pristine white sand beaches, dramatic cliffsides and beautiful sunset views. But if you ask Bennett, there’s another jewel of a destination that tops even Negril.

“For couples looking for a truly secluded and intimate getaway, Port Antonio is one of my favourite regions of the island,” she says. “Tucked away between the Blue Mountains and the Caribbean Sea, it’s a hidden gem that’s popular with celebrities, thanks to its VIP boutique hotels and off-the-beaten-path villas. Honeymooning couples can also enjoy a variety of eco-chic attractions like guided bamboo rafting on the Rio Grande River and swimming in the spring-fed waters of the Blue Lagoon.”

Elevating the Experience

THESE BELOVED EVENTS AROUND THE WORLD CAN HELP NEWLYWEDS TAKE THEIR HONEYMOONS TO THE NEXT LEVEL

While honeymoons already come with an element of excitement, choosing a destination known for a particular festival or event can be a great opportunity for couples to take Insta-worthy photos, enjoy a unique bonding experience and even meet new friends.

For those interested in planning a honeymoon that involves more than just some R&R on a beach, these events around the world may be just what they need to get inspired and think outside the box.

CARNIVAL — MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA

The beloved Carnival in Montego Bay combines parties, concerts, and festivities of all sorts. The annual celebration of culture and freedom holds a deep meaning to the people of Jamaica, as it does in various other Caribbean islands. Couples planning honeymoons around next year’s Carnival, which is scheduled for April 2025, can expect beautiful costumes, dancing, live music, delicious food, and an unforgettable grand masquerade.

Couples who are timing their honeymoons to coincide with Carnival 2025 have their choice of a wide range of romantic accommodations, including Jewel Grande Montego Bay Resort & Spa, an all-inclusive luxury resort home to a full-service spa, two sparkling swimming pools, a state-of-the-art fitness facility and private beachside cabanas.

THE TULIP FESTIVAL — AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS

What could be more romantic than a stroll through tulip fields in full bloom? The annual Tulip Festival in the Netherlands, which takes place from mid-March to midMay, marks the beginning of spring with millions of tulips in and around Amsterdam. While there are dozens of locations and events to admire these blooms, including the world-famous Flower Parade on April 12, 2025, the best place to see them in all their glory is Keukenhof Gardens. Here, newlyweds will be able to experience true wonder and whimsy.

Located 40 minutes from Keukenhof, Hotel TwentySeven is a luxury boutique hotel in The Dam Square that overlooks the Royal Palace. Featuring a one-Michelinstar restaurant and lavish suites with two-person Jacuzzis, double rainshowers and completely soundproof views, the hotel provides plenty of privacy and romance for newlyweds in the heart of Amsterdam.

YI PENG LANTERN FESTIVAL — CHIANG MAI, THAILAND

Newlyweds looking for extra blessings on their new marriage should consider a honeymoon in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where the Yi Peng Lantern Festival takes place every November. Considered one of the most magical festivals in Thailand, the three-day event culminates with thousands of paper lanterns ascending into the night sky, a symbolic gesture of releasing bad luck from the previous year and ushering in good fortunes for the year ahead. Couples will be swooning over the spectacle and sentiment of it all.

To book a honeymoon during the festival, couples can stay at the modern Chiang Mai Marriott Hotel, located in the heart of Chiang Mai’s Night Bazaar District. Only a short walk from the ancient moated city, the hotel is perfect for couples who want to do some exploring before or after the festival.

MARDI GRAS — NEW ORLEANS, U.S.

It’s always a party at Mardi Gras, which has been celebrated in New Orleans since 1699. Set to take place next year on March 4, 2025, Mardi Gras (French for ‘Fat Tuesday’) marks the final day of Carnival with vibrant parades, live music, dancing in the streets, balcony parties and, of course, the city’s world-famous beignets. Couples planning their honeymoon around this epic party are guaranteed memories that will last a lifetime.

For an ideal base to explore the city, check into the Virgin Hotel in New Orleans’ lively Warehouse District. Here, couples can luxuriate in gorgeous rooms and suites (some with floor-to-ceiling windows, walk-in rainfall showers and complimentary yoga mats), at the Commons Club bar and kitchen, or up top at the rooftop pool, complete with a wraparound lounge deck and full bar.

HOLI — MATHURA, INDIA

Known as the Festival of Colours, Love and Spring, Holi is considered one of the most joyous events on the Indian calendar. Set to take place again in mid-March 2025, the festival celebrates the eternal love of the deities Radha and Lord Krishna, making it the perfect backdrop for a one-of-a-kind honeymoon. During Holi, millions of Indians smear each other with red, green, blue and pink powders, turning the air into an explosion of colour. Although celebrated throughout India, the best place to experience the joy of Holi is in Mathura in the town of Uttar Pradesh, revered as the birthplace of Lord Krishna.

Newlyweds looking to participate in the festival can rest easy at The Lalita Grand, Mathura, one of the few ‘green’ hotels in the city with ecofriendly facilities, an exclusive pure vegetarian fine dining restaurant, a serene pool and three room categories.

The Buddymoon Boom

When it comes to honeymoons, today’s newlyweds are saying “the more, the merrier”

It used to be that honeymoons were a time for newlyweds to ‘discover’ one another and enjoy some much-needed privacy. Having lived separately up until then, the post-wedding trip represented the first time a couple could truly be alone together. But with many now marrying later in life and living together before tying the knot, ‘quality alone time’ isn’t such a novelty anymore. Enter the ‘buddymoon,’ a modern-day honeymoon that wedding couples are now taking with close family and friends. Whether it’s just one other couple tagging along or a big group of extended family members, either for the entire duration of the trip or just a few days, buddymoons are gaining in popularity, particularly since the solitary years of the pandemic, says John Hawks, Executive Director of Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Specialists Association (DWHSA).

“Our members have definitely received a surge in requests for buddymoons during and since the pandemic; we estimate 10%-15% of our honeymoon couples want to invite others along,” he says.

“Not only are more couples living together before getting married, younger couples – Gen Zers in particular – have grown up travelling in groups with their friends, so it just seems natural to them to invite them along on honeymoons, too.”

As the saying goes, there’s strength in numbers, which is ever so true in travel. Larger groups travelling and booking together are often privy to better rates, bigger discounts and additional perks. If splitting the cost of the trip evenly amongst the group, buddymoons can also be a cost-savvy option for newlyweds. Plus, inviting friends and family is a great way for couples to ‘keep the party going’ and prolong the magic of their wedding day.

But of course, buddymoons aren’t for everyone. After the hustle and bustle of planning a wedding, couples may simply want to de-stress on their own, without the ‘burden’ of acting as hosts on their honeymoon. Travelling in a group also means having to accommodate a wide range of interests, preferences and personality types, which can lead to potential drama.

“Here’s the key factor for gauging whether couples should plan a buddymoon: their goals for the trip,” says Hawks. “If they want to escape together after the wedding and spend time together before returning to their normal lives, then inviting others along may be a bad idea. But if they view the honeymoon as an extension of the wedding celebration, and they’ve already been living together and they’ve travelled a lot as a couple, then adding friends and family may be just the ticket.”

How many people should you invite?

A good rule of thumb is to keep the group to under 10 people, big enough so that newlyweds still get the benefit of travelling with multiple friends and family, but intimate enough so that they don’t feel overwhelmed. But of course, buddymoons come in all shapes and sizes. For more introverted newlyweds, inviting just one other couple would make for great dinner conversation and added laughs on excursions, but those who are more sociable and love a good party may want to ask 10 or more friends and family members to share in the fun.

Where should you go?

To avoid a logistical nightmare, it’s a good idea to choose a shorthaul destination that’s easy for everyone to get to. Also, while a road trip is a good way to stay local, having to rent multiple cars and book several rooms at various hotels along the way is a lot to coordinate among a big group of people. Keep it simple by choosing an all-inclusive resort, a city break destination with one hotel as a primary base, or a cottage or villa rental by the lake or sea.

How long should you stay?

Couples opting for a buddymoon often find that inviting friends and family to join the middle portion of the trip is best. This allows couples to enjoy a couple days on their own at the beginning and end of the trip, with a few days in between to be with their loved ones. With this in mind, a 10-day or two-week getaway is the perfect amount of time for a buddymoon that’s private and sociable, the best of both worlds.

LOVE on Safari

MORE AND MORE COUPLES ARE CHOOSING AN AFRICAN SAFARI FOR THEIR HONEYMOON — HERE’S WHY

Zuri Caruso had never seen the sun shine that bright, or that red, before in her life. Setting over the Serengeti at that magical hour of the day, the sun – like most things in the African savanna – just looked different from the way it looks back home. Everything was either more vibrant, more raw, more colourful or beautiful, a land unmatched in its natural splendour.

So it would make sense that Zuri and her husband, Leo Caruso, both 33 from Toronto, decided on Tanzania for their honeymoon. Located in East Africa and known for its vast wilderness, Tanzania is home to Africa’s tallest mountain (Mount Kilamanjaro), iconic national parks (Serengeti, Tarangire, Gombe and Arusha, to name a few), and the largest remaining elephant populations in the world. It was this promise of wildlife that appealed most to the couple; Leo has always loved animals, which is why for the first of his birthdays that they’ve celebrated together, Zuri surprised him with a day trip to African Lion Safari, a drive-through safari park in Southern Ontario. They even joked at the time that if things worked out between them, they’d go on a ‘real’ African lion safari for their honeymoon. Little did they know that opportunity would come just four years later.

“Travel is a huge part of our relationship and when we do travel, it’s important for us to immerse ourselves in the culture,” says Zuri. “So a safari in Tanzania was a really easy choice once we started planning our honeymoon.”

As it turns out, more and more couples are making the choice to safari in Africa as a postwedding getaway. John Hawks, Executive Director of Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Specialists Association (DWHSA) says that over 35,000 honeymoons are planned each year by DWHSA members, and of that, an estimated 15%-20% qualify as “out-of-the-ordinary” trips. Among these bookings, safaris rank among the top five exotic options.

“Safaris will satisfy a couple’s desire to do something truly unique for their honeymoon, and because they’re more remote trips, couples will definitely spend more quality time together than they would at a typical all-inclusive resort with all its distractions,” says Hawks. “Friends will have beach

photos of Mexico and the Caribbean from their honeymoons, but you’ll be able to share jaw-dropping images taken from game drives and your lodge deck overlooking the savanna.”

Out of the ordinary was exactly what Zuri and Leo were hoping for. The couple, who tied the knot in Oshawa, Ontario in July 2023, started their honeymoon search on SafariBookings.com, an invaluable resource where they could input their preferences and narrow down the options for suitable safari companies. They knew they wanted to book local (“It was more affordable, plus we wanted to support the local economy,” says Zuri), and they also wanted comfortable hotels, knowledgeable guides and hot meals. Their search eventually led them to Gosheni Safaris, whose five-day ‘Ultimate Tanzania Safari’ included everything from picnic lunches and game drives, to Maasai village visits and a stop at Olduvai Gorge, discovery site of what’s believed to be the remains of the world’s first human beings. Zuri and Leo also tacked on a few leisurely days in Zanzibar, an island in the Indian Ocean that’s also part of Tanzania.

In all, the newlyweds spent 10 days in Africa – five on safari and five in Zanzibar – and thanks to Gosheni and its acute attention to detail, the entire trip exceeded all

“The customization and professionalism Goshemi offered was better than any of the tour companies within our criteria that

WHERE TO GO?

Since a safari honeymoon may be a couple’s first trip of this type together, John Hawks, Executive Director of Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Specialists Association (DWHSA), recommends sticking to the two most popular regions in Africa: eastern Africa (mainly Kenya and Tanzania), and southern Africa (South Africa primarily, but also Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe).

“These two regions will offer the widest range of flights from Canada as well as the best city options for pre- and post-safari stays if you need to decompress before and after those long-haul flights,” he says. “Plus, these countries have the biggest roster of national parks, game reserves and private conservancies to choose from.”

reached out,” says Zuri. “They gave us the ability to select add-ons, we had hot meals throughout the entire experience (which was not easy to find!), and an electric cooler so our drinks were always cold. As soon as we landed in Arusha, our driver was waiting for us, ready to take us straight to our first hotel.”

This level of service was matched by each of the five featured h otels on the itinerary. Zuri and Leo were routinely greeted with welcome treats and a congratulatory note in their rooms, and would return from a day of game viewing to find their bed strewn with rose petals and a hot bath waiting for them. One hotel draped ‘Just Married’ tire covers o n the back of their safari truck, while another baked a cake for Leo’s birthday and set up a lavish dinner for them under the stars. “These little touches made the trip feel so special,” she says.

WHERE TO STAY?

Hawks has a few favourite accommodations that he recommends to honeymooners, including: Royal Malewane in South Africa, located within Greater Kruger Park and comprising three luxury lodges; Lion Sands Ivory Lodge, also in South Africa, located in Sabi Sand Reserve and home to six luxury villas with views of Kruger National Park; and &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge in Tanzania, situated on the rim of Ngorongoro’s ancient caldera and offering 30 suites with banana leaf ceilings and grass roofs.

WHEN TO GO?

The best time to go on safari in Africa is during the dry season – June to October – when animals can be seen gathering at watering holes. But late spring, right after the wet season, and during the Great Migration months, which vary based on weather and destination, are also prime viewing times. “Plan about two weeks for a honeymoon,” says Hawks. “With long-haul flights, that will give you a good amount of time on the ground.”

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

Most safari itineraries that work best for honeymoons will run from $700-$1,050 per person, per night for comfortable lodging, or from $950-$2,000 per person, per night for true luxury. “But it’s important to remember that safari pricing is absolutely all-inclusive, given the remote location of your lodging. Literally everything is included, not just meals and drinks but also excursions and entertainment,” says Hawks.

TOP TRAVEL TIPS

Hawks offers these three tips for honeymooners going on safari: Choose guided and packaged safari honeymoons rather than self-guided/self-drive itineraries (“The last thing you need is the stress of navigating a safari vehicle on your own”); explore beyond the game drives (“Visit local villages or volunteer for ecological projects, which can be arranged through your safari lodge”); and build in down time (“Safaris can be engaging but exhausting, so be sure to build in some time to relax”).

Maasai women in Tanzania

Safaris today have perfected this winning combination of adventure, service and luxury, appealing to just about every type of traveller. Originating in the early 18th century around the trade industry, the safari, which means ‘journey’ in Swahili, eventually evolved into hunting expeditions and finally exploration-type experiences by the turn of the 20th century. But those early safaris focused mainly on game drives. Today, they’ve grown to encompass so much more, from bush walks and bonfires, to hot air balloon rides, photography tours and tented accommodations complete with soaking tubs, king-sized beds and top-shelf liquors. Says Hawks: “Just because you’re in the wild, doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on creature comforts. Many lodges in Africa provide every luxury touch.”

Having ultra-luxe hotels and private safari tours made all the difference for Zuri and Leo, not just in terms of comfort but also romance. Yes, the days were long and tiring, but they were also sweet and rewarding, with hotel staff “celebrating our status as newlyweds at every turn,” says Zuri. The many moments spent viewing sunsets, dining in the open air and encountering wildlife not only brought them closer to nature but also, ultimately, to each other.

“On our first day, we went to Tarangire National Park where a herd of elephants came so close to the vehicle, we could actually feel the ground shake as they walked. It was amazing!” says Zuri. “We kept saying that we couldn’t believe we were there and seeing what we were seeing. The entire trip was awe-inspiring, and

the best part was we were making all these once-in-a-lifetime memories together.”

As Zuri and Leo can attest, there’s nothing quite like coming face to face with an elephant or lion in the wild. But did they see the Big Five? Coined by big game hunters and referring to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot, the Big Five consists of the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and African buffalo. Zuri and Leo came just shy of the five, with the elusive rhinoceros nowhere to be seen. This, however, took nothing away from the overall experience, which Zuri says was a literal dream come true, born from a simple birthday outing five years ago.

“A safari was a great way for us to experience something completely out of the ordinary together,” she says. “It created core memories that we’ll get to relive together for the rest of our lives.”
