Staying Power

We asked star makeup artist Grace Lee to give us the expert tips on making your wedding day makeup look last.

Lee is Maybelline New York's head makeup artist and CAFA 2021 Makeup Artist of the Year winner, and has worked with famous faces like Gwyneth Paltrow, Meghan Markle and more recently, the Bridgerton phenom, Nicola Coughlan.

GRACE’S TOP TIPS

First, if you want your makeup to last, start with products that have been tried and tested for longevity!

I’m a huge fan of the Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink lipsticks and superstay vinyl lipsticks because they do not budge. ese have a wear of 16 hours and honestly you can drink, eat and it will stay put. You want that for lipstick on your wedding day.

e setting sprays are an obvious choice. However for extra staying power, I like to spray my brush with the setting spray and then dab on eyeshadow with it. You can also layer sprays in between skincare and foundation and then spray again. It basically just locks everything in between steps.

I’ve also dampened my makeup sponges with the setting spray instead of water. at also helped with longevity.

For eyes, obviously, waterproof mascara is a must. My personal favourites are the waterproof Lash Sensational and Sky High. Also use waterproof eyeliners. I like to set the eyeliner with eyeshadow to create layers for extra wear. Same for eyeshadow, colour tattoo eye stix is amazing on its own or as a base. I love using it as a base and then applying eyeshadow on top. It will not budge!

SuperStay Vinyl Ink Longwear

Liquid Lipcolor for up to 16 hour wear with a Color Lock formula that de es smudging and transfer. Application tip: Shake before applying on clean, dry lips.

Lash Sensational Washable Mascara helps to separate lashes for a fan e ect, using its exclusive fanning brush with 10 layers of bristles. New is the New Midnight Black shade; infused with Rose Hip Oil to condition the lashes for an even so er feel.

Color Tattoo Eye Stix is Maybelline’s rst all-in-one shadow, liner and primer, and promises nearly 24-hour performance. Made with tattoo-powdered pigments, it’s a multi-tasker: shadow, line and prime. Plus, it’s crease-resistant and comes with a built-in sharpener.

AND TAYA

Dual Citizens

“We are both Circassian, an ethnic group indigenous to the North Caucasus, located in southern Russia,” says Taya.

MO

“In the 19th century, a er a century long war, our people were subject to genocide, ethnic cleansing and exile by the Russian empire. Today, Circassians live in various countries but remain committed to preserving their rich cultural heritage, language and identity.”

Although the couple grew up in di erent parts of the world, their shared ethnic background and culture ultimately brought them together through the power of social media. When Taya moved to Ottawa two years ago, she encouraged Mo to attend Circassian dance classes. Mo was interested since it gave him a chance to get to know her more. A year and a half later, during a helicopter adventure over Mont Tremblant, Mo proposed and Taya happily said yes.

“We have always admired the Chateau Laurier and its historic signi cance in Canada, and we were captivated by its stunning architecture, from the big arched windows to the intricate details on the ceilings,” says Taya about the venue. “We could easily envision ourselves here in our traditional Circassian attire. Also, the professionalism, knowledge and pride of the team when walking us through the venue really stood out.” e decor colour palette featured white, gold and emerald green, with gold and emerald green representing the colours of the

Circassian ag. e menu included a late night bu et with assorted pizzas and a show stopping dessert table (including a chocolate bark tower).

Dance is an integral part of Circassian culture. Prior to their rst entrance, a choreographed Circassian group dance of 30 people surprised their 200 guests and welcomed the couple for their rst dance. “As we entered, wearing our traditional Circassian attire, we had two relatives from each side carry our family crests and walk behind us in a display of tradition. ese family crests, passed down through generations for centuries, symbolize our rich history and connection to our ancestors.” During their second entrance (a er having changed out of the traditional attire), reworks started in full view from the Chateau. “Turns out that on Saturday evenings during the rst three weeks of August, the Les Grands Feux du Casino Lac-Leamy hosts a reworks show from a platform on the Ottawa River, directly behind our venue.”

Mo and Taya combined tradition and modernity in their stunning Ottawa wedding, where the couple live, and which took place at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier. “Ultimately, we wanted this wedding to be a love letter to Circassian culture.”

A SNOW WHITE

WEDDING

After getting engaged during a snowshoeing trip in Algonquin Provincial Park, Rachel and Brennan knew that they wanted to recreate that wintry vibe for their wedding. So the couple, who live in Oakville, On., tied the knot in January 2023 at Ancaster Mill in nearby Ancaster, complete with freshly fallen snow and cozy blankets to stay warm. “We love cold weather and prefer a little chill on such a special day,” says Rachel.

RACHEL & BRENNAN

The Ultimate Weddings Guide |

IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS

Rachel chose a gorgeous Catherine Langlois gown with a polka-dotted overlay, sheer-backed bodice and delicate oral applique. Instead of a veil, she wore a oral crown from Etsy that looked real enough and green enough to match her wedding colours. “None of the veils I tried on felt like me, but once I had the crown I was totally in love with it,” she says.

LET'S EAT!

Rachel and Brennan spent an entire year leading up to the wedding picking local fruits for a non-traditional alternative to a wedding cake: 12 homemade pies baked with love for their 11 guests to enjoy as a late-night dessert.

LAUREN & CONNOR

Lakeside Love

When Edmonton Oilers’ captain Connor McDavid proposed to designer Lauren Kyle in Muskoka, On., Kyle already knew this was the place the couple would celebrate their wedding day.

It’s a place that’s very special to the couple, Kyle told Vogue Australia magazine earlier this year, and where they share a cottage. The summer ceremony was held by the water on a oating dock, o the shore of Old Woman Island in Lake Muskoka.

The bride wore Ti any & Co. jewelry, and ve gowns over the course of the wedding weekend, including vintage Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta and for her walk down the aisle, Vivienne Westwood Couture. Ti any Victoria® diamond vine bracelet and band ring in platinum

After the ceremony, the couple took a private “victory lap,” on the water Kyle said, in a vintage wooden boat (as seen on this issue’s cover), for a romantic start to their married life.

In wedding planning, one aspect that adds a burst of colour and elegance is the choice of owers. From the delicate buds that symbolize new beginnings to the lush blossoms that embody love in full bloom, selecting the right owers can transform a wedding into a visual masterpiece. In this guide, we,ll explore ower ideas for each season and tips to help you choose the best seasonal wedding owers for your big day.

IN FULL BLOOM • •

To help illustrate how to get creative with owers, we’re showcasing the work of photographer Kate Sandercock and her team’s inspiration for this photo shoot: “A fusion of maximalism and nature, organic, fresh and intimate. e design showcases a beautifully curated living tablescape. A mixture of fresh moss, seasonal fruit and unique textural orals play a key role in cra ing this dreamy elopement reception table. Topped o with contrasting yet complimenting layers of tableware, this is sure to serve as inspo for any bride.

SPRING

As nature awakens from its winter slumber, spring weddings embrace the vibrant energy of blooming owers. Delicate cherry blossoms, symbolic of eeting beauty, make for stunning bridal bouquets. Peonies, with their lush layers of petals, embody romance and prosperity. Tulips, available in various colours, are perfect for adding a pop of freshness to the oral arrangements.

Lilacs are also beautiful for springtime weddings, bringing a touch of nostalgia and elegance to spring oral arrangements. And Sweet Peas, with a delicate and delightful fragrance, are available in various pastel hues and add romance and vintage charm to bouquets and centrepieces.

SUMMER

Summer weddings beckon the warmth of the sun and the vitality of long, lazy days. To add some whimsy to the day, consider sun owers – bright and bold, they evoke happiness and adoration. Roses, the timeless symbol of love, are abundant during summer and o er a diverse colour palette to suit any wedding theme. Dahlias add a touch of drama and sophistication with their intricate petal patterns.

For more dramatic oral arrangements, try Liatris (Blazing Star). With its tall, spiky blooms, Liatris o ers a unique and striking element to summer arrangements.

WINTER

Winter weddings are a magical a air, and the right owers can create a winter wonderland. White roses and lilies evoke a sense of purity and innocence, while red amaryllis and berries add a festive touch. With their vibrant red and green leaves, Poinsettias are also perfect for a Christmas-inspired celebration.

White Ranunculus, with its delicate layers of petals, resembles winter snow akes, making it perfect for wintery “I Do’s.” It adds a romantic and timeless quality to bouquets and arrangements. Consider incorporating pine cones into bouquets and centrepieces for a rustic and woodland element.

FALL

As the leaves change their hues, fall weddings can draw inspiration from the rich and warm tones of the season. Incorporate deep burgundy dahlias and ranunculus for a luxurious feel. Sun owers continue to shine this season, complementing the rustic and earthy autumn atmosphere. Celosia features unique, ame-shaped blooms in rich, velvety colours like red, orange, and burgundy. ey bring a distinctive texture to fall oral designs.

And you can also add eucalyptus and dried wheat as a nod to the harvest season.

TIPS FOR CHOOSING SEASONAL FLOWERS

CONSIDER THE CLIMATE

Be mindful of the local climate and the availability of owers during speci c seasons. is will ensure that chosen blooms are fresh and resilient throughout the wedding day.

INCORPORATE LOCAL FLORA

Embrace the beauty of your wedding location by incorporating local owers. is not only adds a personal touch but also reduces the environmental impact of transporting owers from out of town.

MIX TEXTURES AND COLOURS

Create visually stunning arrangements by combining owers with di erent textures and complementary colours. is adds depth and dimension to the overall oral design.

STAY TRUE TO YOU

Align your oral choices with the overall theme and colour palette of your wedding. Whether it's a rustic barn celebration or a glamorous city a air, the owers should seamlessly complement the chosen aesthetic.

THINK BEYOND BLOOMS

Don't limit yourself to just owers. Consider incorporating seasonal elements like branches, berries, pine cones, or even seasonal foliage to add texture and visual interest to your arrangements.

BE OPEN TO ALTERNATIVES

While you may have speci c owers in mind, be open to alternatives that are in season. Your orist can suggest owers with similar colours or textures to achieve the desired look.

DESTINATION WEDDINGS & HONEYMOONS

WE ASKED THREE TRAVEL EXPERTS WHERE THE HIDDEN GEMS ARE FOR DESTINATION WEDDINGS AND HONEYMOONS. PLUS, WHERE THEY’RE SUGGESTING TO GO NEXT.

Best underrated or under the radar Destination Wedding and/or Honeymoon location, and why?

Cruising is both underrated and under the radar, I believe that being able to enjoy three to six ports, great food, entertainment and so much more. It is a unique idea with multiple choices of itineraries throughout the world and most have private islands in the Carribean for a di erent spin on one of a kind. ere are also ports convenient to the West Coast that give us the opportunity to enjoy cruising without the stress of connecting ights to the East. Each cruise line caters to di erent demographics and price points depending on the size of your event. Cruising combines the wedding ceremony and honeymoon into one seamless experience. Guests can attend the ceremony and then enjoy a vacation together without the hassle of additional travel arrangements. e best of all – unpack once!

New destinations or trends in romance travel in general that are surprising you or that you're recommending?

I think small group travel that includes a wedding is an upcoming trend, more micro weddings in unique locations (eight to 12 guests during an African Safari or 30 on a coach tour through Ireland/Scotland or various locations in Europe) that incorporates a once in a lifetime adventure.

I also see a resurgence in Las Vegas, not necessarily for eloping but for ease and price point from Western Canada – I highly recommend the Valley of Fire at sundown... stunning!

Shiel’s Pick: Paul Gaugin Cruises luxury small ships to the South Paci c.

Best underrated or under the radar Destination Wedding and/or Honeymoon location, and why?

• Costa Rica – for its less-crowded resorts

• Cruises – most people go to land options rst and do not consider a cruise (Especially around Europe)

• Europe – Italy, France, Spain: beautiful and romantic locations that can be done at a leisurely pace

New destinations or trends in romance travel in general that are surprising you or that you're recommending?

Not that it is new but I o er a Honeymoon Registry where the Bride and Groom plan and book their honeymoon with a deposit and the guests can contact me directly to put money toward the couple’s honeymoon instead of gifts – great for 2nd marriages or couples with big dreams

I am hearing of amazing requests for Tuscany weddings in a castle, private island weddings or even underwater weddings (for scuba people) but couples are not preparing themselves for the price that comes along with these weddings. Qualifying them with a maximum budget is so important upfront. Destination weddings are not cheap for the most part and the couple must consider the budgets of their guests, so it is more of a challenge than it used to be.

Best underrated or under the radar Destination Wedding and/or Honeymoon location, and why?

Tulum, Mexico. Consider getting o the beaten path in Tulum, which o ers an undiscovered feel with small boutique hotels, top notch spas and amazing local Mayan culture. e sun-warmed shores of Tulum o er stunning wedding worthy stretches of white sand beaches, with unique photo settings in locations such as Mayan Ruins and Cenotes.

New destinations or trends in romance travel in general that are surprising you or that you're recommending?

Adding a cultural air to your special day is something upcoming brides are adding to their special wedding vacations. Cultural immersion, embracing diverse traditions and supporting local talent is the new trend in whatever destination you choose. Make your day one-of-a-kind by adding unique gifts for guests, hiring traditional live music, custom décor, ower leis and arranging traditional cuisine for the wedding breakfast.
