Basque-ing In It

The Basque waist is known for it’s V-shaped waistline. It was tting that at Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week, the look, named for the northern region of Spain where it has its origins, was a top trend.

STAY COOL

If you’re considering a destination wedding or honeymoon, or planning a summer celebration, look for lightweight fabrics such as linen (and don’t worry about the wrinkles!). New Zealand menswear brand Rodd & Gunn has come to Canada, and the company has stocked a great selection of shirts that will help keep you cool. According to the designers, linen’s natural breathability can help to regulate temperature.

THE LIGHTER TOUCH

Sometimes a summer wedding requires nothing more than a light- lled venue that brings out a couple’s inner glow. An unfussy, yet elegant approach to dressing for the big day is the perfect warm-weather solution. As the models, recently engaged couple Tara Zhang and Dwayne Betty demonstrate, less really can be more.

The oor-to-ceiling windows at Spencers’ on the Waterfront allow the light to pour in, bathing the space in sunshine. The decor features subtle yet thoughtful details. The look may be a minimalist’s dream, but there’s a luxe factor feel with the blush pink and white tones. Instead of an abundance of decorations, focus on a few statement pieces that will make a lasting impression. “We wanted to create a serene and elegant atmosphere that allows the couple’s love and connection to shine through,” says makeup artist Lisa Nguyen. “Couples can create a wedding that is timeless and chic, and embrace the beauty of simplicity.”

STYLE NOTE

There are two bridal wedding dress looks to showcase a ceremony and reception dress. Note that both these styles brilliantly t and enhance a generous bust line and decollette. An absence of jewelry and the ruched bustier put the focus on Tara’s gorgeous smile and awless skin. The looks also allow her to show o her shoulders and, with a simple yet romantic up-do, the only extra is a sprig of blush-toned roses, which o set the subtle sparkle of the beaded gown.

The Summer Guide

STYLE NOTE

Dwayne’s sand-hued suit may seem casual, but the tailored t and the crisp white shirt anchored by tonal shoes elevate his look.

IN THEIR ELEMENT

SARAH & MICHAEL

Choosing a summer camp as their wedding venue perfectly re ects Sarah and Michael Duncan’s love story. eir passion for hiking, portaging and camping in uenced every aspect of their wedding.

By hosting their celebration at Camp Timberlane in Haliburton, Ont., they cra ed a weekend that seamlessly blended nature, adventure and heartfelt moments, embodying their shared a ection for the great outdoors. Here, Sarah shares her tips for planning an outdoor weekend wedding.

EMBRACE THE OUTDOORS

Sarah emphasized the best part of a camp wedding is its simplicity. The 120 guests stayed in cozy cabins and participated in activities like basketball, tennis, kayaking and canoeing. Meals were served in the camp’s mess hall or under the open sky at picnic tables, with s’mores kits adding a nostalgic touch to the Friday night bon re. “With limited Wi-Fi, it was a chance for everyone to reconnect with nature and each other.”

DECORATE WITH A NATURAL ESTHETIC

As guests walked through the woods to the ceremony site by the lake, they were greeted by oral arrangements that mirrored the early autumn’s changing leaves and natural colours of the surroundings. Choose locally grown owers and work with a local orist. This supports the community and reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting owers from distant locations. Ranunculus, dahlias, scabiosa, roses and baby’s breath in shades of pale blush, whites and dusty mauve used in Sarah and Michael’s wedding complemented the setting.

ADD SOMETHING OLD TO SOMETHING NEW…

One of the most touching moments was a surprise from Sarah’s mom: a photo charm of Sarah’s late grandmother tied to her bouquet. “My Grandma, or ’Gram’ as I called her, was always my biggest cheerleader,” Sarah says. “The charm symbolized her everlasting love and support, and I felt her presence throughout the celebration.”

SARAH’S PLAN-AHEAD CHECKLIST

Essential tips to help your wedding weekend go o without a hitch – except the part where you get hitched!

01.

Do the Details

If you are planning a full weekend celebration, don’t underestimate all the extra details and logistics – meals, cabin assignments, ensuring guests with special circumstances are comfortable and creating maps of the property.

02.

Go Digital

Have a comprehensive wedding website/invitation that outlines the wedding and what is involved. Given that it is a slightly non-traditional venue and will be a new experience for many of your guests, they will likely have questions. Try to be as clear as you can about your vision.

03.

Get to Know Your Vendors

Make sure you are comfortable with the primary point of contact. Harley and his team at Camp Timberlane made the planning process enjoyable, allowing us to tour the campgrounds and envision everything. We knew from our rst discussion with Harley how important it would be to him that our wedding was everything we wanted.

04.

Hire a Fabulous Wedding Planner

Our event coordinator, Julia, was an absolute pleasure to work with. She eased my stress during the wedding planning process and the day of. Asking our planner for an online workbook outlining the entire day’s timing, organizing contacts, and accounting for all decor kept us perfectly on schedule.

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE • AND MARRIAGE •

LOVE IS LOVE. In our lifetimes, we’re quite certain that there will never be a more a rming statement. The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved for who we are, loved for how we boldly show up to face the world every day, and loved for the incredible gift we are in the lives of so many people. But if there is anything better than being loved, it is to love. Love is a universal language that knows no boundaries. It transcends race, gender, religion and sexual orientation.

Weddings can serve as the ultimate celebration of love, unity, and commitment. In the celebration of marriage, it’s essential to honour and uplift this diversity by creating a space where all couples feel seen, heard, a rmed and celebrated for who they are. That’s why, in recent years, inclusivity has become a cornerstone of a contemporary wedding ceremony.

For the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, the journey to marriage has often been fraught with obstacles, but today, love triumphs as couples from all walks of life come together to say “I do.”

With the legalization of same-sex marriage in many countries around the world, more couples are choosing to publicly declare their love and commitment to each other through marriage. This sends a powerful message of acceptance and a rmation and tells the world that 2SLGBTQIA+ love is valid, their stories are valued, and their presence is welcomed in the celebration of marriage.

In addition to 2SLGBTQIA+ weddings, today’s wedding ceremonies are re ecting the diverse world we live in and serve as a reminder that love knows no boundaries.

Ceremonies that celebrate multiracial couples, couples with disabilities, and couples from di erent religious and cultural backgrounds demonstrate that love is a powerful force that has the ability to bring people together, regardless of their di erences. Inclusivity in wedding ceremonies is not just about being politically correct, it is about recognizing and celebrating the diversity of love.

Creating a wedding ceremony that celebrates inclusivity and diversity doesn’t have to be complicated.

• Rituals: Make Them Original Incorporate rituals and traditions from diverse cultures and backgrounds to create a ceremony that re ects the unique heritage of you and your partner. Or use elements of existing rituals to create one that is original. Whether it’s blending traditional attire, serving diverse cuisines, or performing a handfasting or tea ceremony, infuse your wedding with cultural richness and symbolism.

• Vows: Make Them Personal Write your own vows that speak to your individual experiences, values, and aspirations as a couple. This is an opportunity to express your love and commitment in your own words and re ect on the journey that has brought you together and look forward to the future you are forging.

• To “She” or not to “She” – That Is The Question! Using gender-neutral language throughout your ceremony will ensure that all guests feel included and respected. Instead of “husband” or “wife” consider using terms like “spouse” or “partner". Correctly using someone’s preferred pronouns is one of the simplest ways to show respect for their gender identity.

• Inclusive Wedding Party Invite friends and family members of all genders and orientations to stand by your side in your wedding party. This is a wonderful way to celebrate the diverse relationships and connections that have shaped your lives and to acknowledge your favourite faces who have brought you to this moment.

• Put Your Background in the Foreground Every couple has a story to tell, and inclusive wedding ceremonies provide a platform to honour and celebrate those narratives. Whether it’s acknowledging di erent religious beliefs, incorporating rituals from indigenous cultures, or paying tribute to ancestral traditions, couples can infuse their ceremonies with personal touches that re ect their identities and backgrounds.

• Safe Spaces Are Happy Places Inclusivity should extend beyond the ceremony to create a safe and welcoming space for all guests. From gender-neutral restrooms to inclusive language in invitations and programs, couples can ensure that everyone feels respected and valued. Even in an industry whose entire business is the celebration of love, the path to progress hasn’t always been a smooth one. Work with vendors and venues that prioritize diversity and inclusion.

• Voices and Choices As we celebrate love in all its forms, it’s essential to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities within the wedding industry. Choosing to support 2SLGBTQIA+ owned businesses, BIPOC vendors, and organizations that advocate for equality will help to create a more inclusive and equitable wedding landscape for future couples.

• A Proficient O ciant Choose an o ciant who is supportive and a rming of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and who understands the importance of crafting a ceremony that celebrates love in all its forms. Work closely with your o ciant to personalize your ceremony to ensure that it re ects your shared values and identities and authentically tells your story. At the heart of it all, a wedding ceremony is a celebration of love – a love that transcends boundaries, de es expectations, and triumphs over adversity. When we open our hearts to its in nite possibilities, we discover that love truly does win, every time.

LOVE IN BLOOM

RENAISSANCE ROMANTICISM, VINTAGE VIBES AND A FAIRY-TALE LOCATION COMBINED, INSPIRE THE BRIDAL BEAUTY AND BUCOLIC DECOR. PLUS, THE EXPERT SECRET TO MAKING YOUR HAIR AND MAKEUP LAST ALL DAY.

August Tree Flower Farm was the perfect location and embodied the vintage-inspired, grown-up fairytale we wanted to create,” says makeup artist Erin Winn, of The Look Bridal. Inly Events helped lead the crew in crafting and materializing the magical vision Winn and the team had for this shoot.

The newly renovated guest house served as an ideal setting for getting ready photos, Winn notes, while the greenhouse provided a rustic backdrop with its dahlia blooms and incredible natural light.

Setting the Table

“A captivating tea and breakfast setup in front of the original barn showcases vintage details, complemented by delightful desserts from Sweet Avenue Cakery and visits from resident silkie chickens,” she adds. The ceremony area featured mismatched vintage chairs and a stunning oral installation, “creating a modern, organic ambience. Rich colours and lush orals adorn the tabletop design, accompanied by fresh fruits and tapered candles. A vintage side table doubles as a Champagne cart. Hand-illustrated paper goods by local designer Yaelly Designs add a charming touch.

Beauty Notes

The makeup looks by Erin Winn of The Look Bridal channels Renaissance paintings with a luminous, translucent skin e ect, naturally ushed cheeks and rosebud lips.

Face Forward: Beautiful skin is always the focus of any makeup look I create. Talk to your Esthetician to create a skin care plan leading up to your wedding. Regular facials and consistency with your skincare regimen will make all the di erence.

Base Basics: Less is more when it comes to base. I like to use a lightweight, radiant foundation to even out skin tone where needed. I will then spot conceal anywhere that needs a little extra coverage. I use di erent textures of concealer under the eyes than I would for concealing blemishes and other imperfections. I like to use creamy, radiant concealers under the eyes. Anything too heavy or dry can accentuate texture and crease.

Try: Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation, Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Hydrating and Depu ng Concealer.

Erin’s expert tips to longwearing makeup: Waterproof or tubing mascara and waterproof eyeliner are must haves, but layering textures is also key. For example, using a creamy eyeshadow base and layering powder shadow on top, will extend the wear time tremendously. Also try applying a cream blush prior to your powder blush. This trick extends wear time and creates a beautiful natural blush e ect. Sealing o your makeup with a setting spray like One/Size On Til Dawn Mattifying Setting Spray will help keep your makeup looking fresh all day and night.

Try: GXVE Beauty Line It Up Clean 24 hr Gel Pencil Waterproof Eyeliner, MAC Extended Play Mascara.

Good Hair Day

Bridal Hair Collective’s Amy Gri ths created two stunning and distinct looks: a modern undone updo and relaxed, soft waves, both re ecting current trends. By following these tips, you can ensure that your wedding hair looks stunning and stays awless for your outdoor summer wedding. Here, Amy’s great hair guide for an outdoor wedding:

1 Opt for weather-resistant styles: Choose hairstyles that can withstand heat, humidity, and potential wind. Updos and sleek ponytails are great options that will hold up well in outdoor conditions. Or consider having your stylist stay on-site for touch-ups or return to provide a second hairstyle.

2

Consider your venue: Take inspiration from the natural surroundings of your outdoor venue. Soft, romantic styles complement garden weddings, while beach weddings may call for more relaxed, tousled looks like beachy waves or bohemian braids.

3 Use hair accessories strategically: Incorporate hair accessories like headbands, clips, or owers to complement your hairstyle and add elegance. Ensure they’re secure and won’t easily come loose in outdoor conditions.

4 Schedule a trial run: Book a trial run with your hairstylist to test out di erent hairstyles and

see how they hold up in the summer weather. This will help you nd the perfect look that is both beautiful and practical for your big day.

5 Prep your hair: Use products like hairspray, anti-frizz serum, and heat protectant to help your hairstyle last longer and withstand outdoor elements. Consider washing your hair the day before for better hold.

6 Have a touch-up kit on hand: Pack a small touch-up kit with essentials like bobby pins, hairspray, and a mini brush or comb to x any stray hairs or refresh your hairstyle throughout the day.

A poetic marriage in the spirit of a French ower garden.

LA VIE EN ROSE

e romantcism, elegance and a touch of poetry were the backdrop for our "French ower garden" inspired shoot at the Domaine des Séquoias in Isère, France,” says ne art photographer Yanglyphyne Labolle. “ e pastel tones recall the Fine Art/beaux-Arts wedding style.”

Every detail and moment was carefully thought out and imagined in shades of pastel to create a re ned and poetic atmosphere, while remaining in the spirit of the ower garden. PASSION

PLACES

If you need a little inspiration for where you might tie the knot or celebrate with your one and only after the main event, these destinations are where the travel experts are booking.

Imagine mixing the magic of weddings with dreamy destinations – that’s where I come in!” says travel counsellor Shiel McClure of Champagne and Promises Travel Planning. “As a certi ed travel agent and certi ed destination wedding planner, I specialize in creating unforgettable experiences for couples planning their destination weddings and honeymoons.” From romantic beach escapes to charming European adventures, McClure, a destination wedding specialist based in Alberta who also holds her certi cate from the Wedding Planners Institute of Canada, says it’s all about turning travel dreams into reality “with a sprinkle of love and a dash of wanderlust.”

For Pattie Kisilewich, a certi ed wedding and event planner and owner of Dreamaker Vacations in Edmonton, the ultimate goal, she says, is to have each client love their trip and talk about it forever. “I have a passion for travel and it means even more to me with my brides and grooms – this is their big day and I get to play a small part to make it happen.” According to Kisilewich, a travel agent’s role is to do all the research and deal with the problems – “my clients’ role is to enjoy their trip!”

A number of years ago, Paula Everett decided to follow a lifelong passion of working in the travel industry. “There, I was lucky enough to be mentored by an iconic destination wedding planner and luxury travel agent.” Everett, a certi ed travel advisor and destination wedding planner with the Toronto-based Your Destination Dreams, was deeply committed to learning, understanding clients’ needs and constantly adapting to the ever-changing travel world, she says, “and my love for destination wedding planning shone through!”

Aside from their expertise, what all three have in common is an enthusiasm for travel and for creating memorable happenings for their clients, whether it’s a blowout bash or an intimate a air. Another is that each of these experts, all members of The Travel Agent Next Door, an exclusively Canadian network of athome-based travel agents, has the ability to juggle all the details, from a large number of guests, coordinating group travel, liaising with on the-site wedding planners in the destination and leveraging their extensive contact lists for the best possible wedding event and more.

Shiel McClure

Cabo San Lucas/San Jose del Cabo (Riu Palace Cabo for families or Riu Palace Baja California for Adult Only): Close/short ight for western Canada, transfer to property is convenient, the wedding department at all three Riu properties are good to work with and have packages suitable for most wedding groups... beautiful locations on both properties...

Puerto Vallarta (Iberostar Playa Mita): Again, a shorter direct ight, beautiful scenery, great wedding department.

Hawaiian Islands (Kauai, Oahu, Maui): I like it for my more unique clients that want something di erent than everyone else... It works very well for small ceremonies and extremely popular for renewals and second time around couples that want something more intimate and less commercial.

Mexico: good ights (especially from the West). Fantastic variety to t everyone (budget and style), easy marriage requirements and I LOVE Mexico (also easy to enter for passengers who may prefer not to connect via the United States because of availability of direct ights).

Hawaii: Great ights, especially from the West, great climate, great options for backdrops – di erent islands, would be more suited to the independent traveller but easy to customize.

A tie between Jamaica and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic: Good ights to these places, great variety for clients, easy marriage requirements, I would o er Sandals in Jamaica (again, also easy to enter for passengers who may prefer not to connect via the United States because of availability of direct ights).

EDITOR’S NOTE: In Punta Cana, an option is Grand Palladium Punta Cana Resort & Spa, for 5-star, all-inclusive, family-friendly service.

Costa Rica: This location o ers the perfect balance of love, nature and memories. It really is Pure Vida.

Santorini, Greece: Experience Mediterranean charm with the most breathtaking scenery, incredible food and culture.
