PUNKTASTIC 13.07

INTRODUCTION We’re always taken aback with the sheer quality of bands emerging from the underground scenes, and this month was definitely no different. For our seventh compilation, we have put an added focus on grassroots bands predominantly from the UK, but with a couple of sneaky surprises from stateside and down under. From new material from The Famous Class, through an exclusive first play from up-andcomers Layers, and even minimalist grunge from a Scottish mining town, the standard of new music filling up our inboxes is staggering. There’s not so much a theme this time around, other than really fucking good new music. That’s a pretty admirable trait though, right? As ever, we hope you enjoy blasting these tracks out of your sound systems as much as we enjoyed sifting through the excellent pile of submissions. See you next time, — Ben and the Punktastic Team PS. If you head over to http://punktastic.com/radar you can download the whole thing!

01. THE FAMOUS CLASS Guilty As Charged

Following on from their two EPs – 2010’s ‘Make or Break’ and 2011’s ‘Have You Ever…’, The Famous Class are stepping in a more unconventional direction if new single ‘Guilty As Charged’ is anything to go by. Roping in the excellent GIANTS for some hardcore screams and rapper Rebel Prole for some King Blues vibes, this track propels The Famous Class into new territory. There’s even a chant for those looking for some serious fist pumping.

02. LAYERS

Mind on Fire

Ready to take on the world with their forthcoming self-titled EP, ‘Mind of Find’ acts as Layers’ infectious rallying call.

Birmingham, Melodic Rock

With its ominous chord structures, the fast-pace is underpinned by an air of angst and frustration.

For Fans Of: Scholars Wounds The JCQ

Borrowing heavily from various genres, not least soul and punkrock, Layers are an exciting prospect to emerge from the midlands in recent years. This track is an emotional rollercoaster that will see you returning to the back of the line again and again.

Self-titled EP (released 16th September)

03. BOSTON MANOR All Tight (Euan Cosh)

Hailing from the grimy shores of everyone’s favourite seaside destination Blackpool, Boston Manor rose from the desire to play upbeat punk following stints in a number of hardcore bands. The result is fast, upbeat and melodic with a subtle hardcore edge. With their debut EP available for free and the emo revival well and truly underway, the second half of 2013 is looking exciting for Boston Manor.

04. OTTO Clouds

Four-piece punk rockers Otto describe ‘Clouds’ as a “four chord nostalgic blast about growing up and turning into an asshole.” With their contemporaries Moose Blood and Gnarwolves going from strength to strength, it wouldn’t be surprising to see these guys head in the same direction. This is emo for a new generation – simple yet suitably dirty.

05. SWEET TEENS Terminal Grouse

You’d be hard pushed to find much information about Australian indie infused punks Sweet Teens.

Australia, Indie-punk

Sounding something like Arctic Monkeys if they had spent more time listening to punk in the 70s, ‘Terminal Grouse’ includes fast drums, typical indie riffs and some suitably slurred vocals.

For Fans Of: Arctic Monkeys 70s punk

There’s traditional punk coursing through these veins and an extroverted attitude that is destined to enthral. Album number 2 is one hell of a soundtrack for a heavy night on the tiles.

06.COLOURMEWEDNESDAY (I’m not coming to your) BBQ

Colour Me Wednesday play a summery blend of pop, indie and punk not far removed from the likes of Lemuria and Best Coast. Formed of sisters Jennifer (vocals) and Harriet Doveton (guitar), alongside Carmela (bass) and drummer Sam, the band were clearly raised on The Lemonheads. Taken from their forthcoming debut album, ‘(I’m Not Coming To Your) BBQ’ is a self-scathing introverted piece of angst, all shrouded under some beautifully distorted summer riffage.

07. WOAHNOWS The Joy Disorder

Fuzzy guitars are the order of the day for ex-Crazy Arm bassist Tim Rowling-Parker’s new endeavour.

Plymouth, Indie-punk

The aptly named WOAHNOWS have enough ingenuity to stop you in your tracks, as ‘The Joy Disorder’ brims with captivating melody and an honest punk-rock attitude.

09. MAYORS OF MIYAZAKI Get A Hobby

Taking influence from a wealth of post-hardcore and experimental outfits, spazzy rockers Mayors of Miyazaki have been busy forming a unique take on the likes of Blakfish or Hot Snakes. Gathering interest from We-Be Records – home of These Arms Are Snakes, Tropics and Lords – their second full-length ‘Holy Cop’ is taking things one step further. Recorded at the legendary Southern Studios by Harvey Birell, the PJ Harvey, Shellac and Fugazi vibesare all loud and clear. If you’re looking for a band doing things differently this year, get a load of this.

09. NOT PENNY’S BOAT Flat 56

Not afraid to build their punk around addictive melodies, Not Penny’s Boat are sure to inject a bucketload of fun into their punk. Formed in 2011, the band recently finished recording their debut album ‘Waste Some Time’, and are already penning their follow-up. At least for now, ‘Flat 56’ should get you moving.

10.DEAD BROADS Don’t lie in my Bed

Dead Broads are nothing less than a visceral attack on the senses.

London, Noise punk ‘Single’

Turning raw punk up to 11 and well-and-truly flipping the bird to a disenfranchised society, this fourpiece are hell bent on starting a riot. Fuelled by sleepless nights and fast living, vocalist Sophia Bett tells us they are ready to spit venom at the masses. What better way than this unhinged ode to addiction and lust. You’ve been warned.

For Fans Of: The JCQ Dead Kennedys TSOL

11. IVY LEAGUE Void

Emerging out of the US after the dominance of the “Wave” bands, Ivy League take some of those strengths and throw in a fistful of off-kilter pop-punk. This isn’t the type of pop-punk that will have you bouncing around your bedroom, but then again for the only appearance of a stateside band on this compilation, we wanted to give you something a little different.

Texas, pop-punk ‘Transparency’ LP For Fans Of: Balance & Composure La Dispute Gnarwolves

12. ANTIBLOOM

Chest Pearl

Minimalist at its core, one-man claustrophobia machine Antibloom creates some beautifully crafted ominous tones along the lines of downbeat Fugazi or Slint. Formed in 2012, Antibloom tells us that he focuses on the moods and textures of growing up in an industrialized area and its faded past through noir guitar lines and daft references to the Terminator movies. All music needs references to Terminator movies.

West Lothian, Scotland, postgrunge Self-titled EP For Fans Of: Fugazi Slint Enclosed spaces

13. WHITE CLOUDS & GUNFIRE Bruised not Broken

Penned as an ode-of-sorts to a friend of the band who has found themselves unlucky in love, ‘Bruised Not Broken’ sprung out of a handful of girlie chats as a dedication to hold your head high. Unorthodoxly led by the piano, the band wanted to track to nod back to where they originally came from and how they have developed. The result is an unashamedly uplifting and suitably sentimental slice of pop-rock – something lighter to close this compilation off.
