PUNKTASTIC 13.11
!
INTRODUCTION There's loads to get excited about in this month's Scottish DIY Compilation.
!
These bands have played on BBC Radio 1, toured the USA and Europe, and released some brilliant music over the past couple of years. They’re hard-working, enthusiastic and great live.
!
While I'm not Scottish at all, living here over the last year has made me seriously proud of the number of talented people. Scottish DIY Punk is filled with brilliant, charismatic people who put on loads of fantastic gigs and have created some of my favourite records.
!
There’s a wide-range of sounds on here, from the messy garage-punk of Cleavers to the emo-tinged, melodic vibe of Little Anchors. This is just a taster of what Scottish punk is really all about.
!
So, I hope that after listening to this compilation you have a look north of the border, find more great music and support the bands which we're so fortunate to have.
!
Make sure you go to http://pnkts.tc/comp1311 to listen to all the tracks, and pop in your email so we can tell you when the next one’s out.

01 THE MURDERBURGERS Another way out of here
The Murderburgers are a three piece pop punk band from Glasgow/ Edinburgh, Scotland formed in February 2007.
!
They are lyrically influenced by such things as anxiety, depression, life, death and a severe lack of money.
!
The band have spent the past few years touring relentlessly in the UK, Europe, America and Canada.
!
The band plan on continuing to cover as much ground as possible until it drives them insane and/or kills them.
!
New CD/LP "These Are Only Problems" out now on Asian Man Records/Monster Zero.

02 KIMBERLY STEAKS Fix My Head
We are Kimberly Steaks.
!
We play short songs. We like to play fast. And loud!
!
We like playing shows and generally having a good time.
!
The band has been going for years and recently we’ve put out our first vinyl, which is a split with Cleavers.
!
We think Harry S. Truman summed it up best when he said, "I do not believe there is a problem in this country or the world today which could not be settled if approached through the teaching of The Kimberly Steaks.
!
True facts.

03 CARSON WELLS Home
Carson Wells are three noisy young men from Aberdeen, Scotland.
!
They play a driving, complex form of rock/post-hardcore music.
!
This track, 'Home', is the last song on their debut LP, 'Wonderkid' (Art for Blind Records).
!
The band return to England from the 7th-9th November, playing in Sheffield, Manchester and Nottingham.
!
This month they covered 2,400 miles on tour throughout the UK - great effort.

04 FIESTA MINOR Cold
Fiesta Minor are a 4 piece from Glasgow in Scotland, playing an intense mix of hardcore, screamo and post rock.
!
Known for their gripping live performances, the band have developed a vast, heavy sound which provides the back-bone for heartbreaking, searing screams of raw teen angst and loss.
!
Fiesta Minor particularly shine through, however, with their abilities to create exquisite melodies and harmonies amongst the chaos.
!
This is most evident in the song Funeral, the closing track of the band’s latest release, ‘Time Spent Breathing’.

05 BEAR ARMS Vultures
We are a band called Bear Arms; a 4piece post hardcore band based in Glasgow.
!
We have been a band almost 3 years and feel our music sounds like a mix between Thrice, Deftones, Alexisonfire and Brand New.
!
We are due to release our debut album through Glasgow indie label, Struggletown Records in 2014.

06 GET IT TOGETHER
Without A Whimper
“I dunno, we're like the bastard child of that 88 youth crew kind of sound and Epitaph/Fat Wreck compilations.
!
We were reviewed in some Spanish blog as sounding like H2O & Shelter plus people always tell me that we sound like No Trigger, we didn't rip them off in the slightest…”
!
Mark and Craig gigged together with their old bands, didn't see each other for 4 years, bumped into each other at a Hot Water Music gig and without warning,
! Get It Together happened. ! ! !
We're about to self-release a 9 track CD in late 2013 (an ideal stocking filler or so I'm told) and looking to hit the road as much as we possibly can in 2014.

07 CLEAVERS Give Up
Cleavers are a prolific punk rock band from the North of Scotland (currently on hiatus).
!
For many, punk is at its most enjoyable when loud, brash and aggressive.
!
Cleavers carried on that attitude with every one of their releases.

08 SINK ALASKA
The World Ain’t What It Seems Gunny
Sink Alaska were born into an incestuous Glasgow music scene…
!
“Sink Alaska arrived kicking and screaming in March 2013” is the sort of drivel usually found in biographies - but the mundane truth is that we are four guys who have all known each other and played in various bands together for years.
!
We just don't have the good sense to know when it's time to quit.
!
People who are not Sink Alaska say that we sound like a cross between 90’s UK pop punk and latter-day melodic punk, probably making us sound better than we really are.

09 SHIELDS UP
Ever Get The Feeling You’re Going To Hell
Shields Up were a melodic hardcore band from Edinburgh, influenced by Comeback Kid, Champion, Hot Water Music and Modern Life Is War among others.
!
Shields Up called it a day in December 2012, but the band will re-group on Saturday 21st December to play a one off show at Opium in Edinburgh in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Anti-Manifesto.
!
For fans of Madball Bane Zeke
Formed in early 2009, the band released one full length record on Wasted State Records and 2 well received EPs via the bands own label, Anti-Manifesto, all of which were recorded DIY by the band themselves. Hard work paid off and the band were given opportunities to play alongside some of their favourite bands - Defeater, Ruiner, H2O, Iron Chic, Astpai, Comadre, Polar Bear Club - among others.

10 LITTLE ANCHORS My Grandfather was a Projectionist
Hi there!
facebook.com/littleanchorsmusic
I’m Ross, and Little Anchors started out as my solo folk project last year, but by the time it came to tracking the first record, it had somehow evolved into a reverb-laden emo project.

!
I was suffering badly from depression and anxiety at the time I wrote the songs, so I donated all proceeds from the record to the Scottish Association for Mental Health.
!
For the live shows, I’m joined by Kevin Black of Fat Goth, Owen McLaughlin of Bonehouse/The Won Over and Ken Babarinsa of Kings and Cowards, and I’m currently writing the next record.

11 THE WALKING TARGETS
Count Me Out
The Walking Targets play passionate, melodic punk rock with an emotional edge.
!
They’ve also played a host of other gigs within Scotland including support slots for Arliss Nancy and The Smith Street Band.
!
And they’re currently 90% of the way through writing their debut full length album which is scheduled for recording and release in the first half of next year.
They began in 2006 when the three members were in their early years of high school as a means to have fun and replicate the sound of bands they loved.
!
Slowly, things began to be taken more and more seriously, and in the summer of 2012 the band recorded their debut EP, 'Controlling the Motions'.
! facebook.com/thewalkingtargets !
!
Fast forward to now and they have toured the UK twice with The Murderburgers.

12 NEEDLEMAN First of the Mohicans
This is thrashy, shouty punk rock with a rough-around-the-edges charm and some fist-in-the-air hooks squeezed in there too.
!
Needleman are a 3-piece punk rock band from Aberdeen, cobbled together from the debris of disbanded sludgemetal, alt-rock and pop-punk bands.
!
The end result is a barrage of highenergy noise with songs rarely breaching the three minute mark.
!
Hopefully, Needleman’s debut EP “SelfTitled” will raise as many eyebrows as fists.

13 SHATTERHAND
Paradigm Shift
Craft beer fuelled socio-political outcasts from the industrial wasteland of Scotland.
!
With hints of Leatherface and Hot Water Music, their blend of powerful DIY Hardcore punk and heart on the sleeve integrity, has won them friends wherever they have rolled into town.
