LETTER FROM ZIONSVILLE MAYOR STEHR
WELCOME TO ZIONSVILLE, WHERE YOU ARE NEVER A STRANGER FOR LONG.
We take great pride in all our town has to offer - whether you’re visiting or planting roots here - and Zionsville embodies the best of Hoosier hospitality.
This welcoming spirit is part of our long history. You’ll find it in our historic brick-lined Main Street district, our diverse shops and restaurants, and our friendly coffeehouses. While our town has grown to encompass 67 square miles, making us one of the largest municipalities in Indiana, we remain committed to our small-town identity. Whether you settle in our charming Village, a newer subdivision or a rural area, you’ll quickly discover that neighbors know each other by name. In Zionsville, community is not just a noun - it’s a way of life.
Businesses thrive here, and we have big plans to make our town even more vibrant in the years ahead. At its core, Zionsville strives to be a place where people want to live, work, learn, play and retire. That vision is our guiding principle for the 21st century and beyond.
Our award-winning school system features six elementary schools, two middle schools and Zionsville Community High School, home of the Eagles! We believe in the power of a wellrounded education and proudly support our students in their academic, athletic, vocational and artistic endeavors. They are our future, and because of them, our future is bright!
If you love the outdoors, you’ll feel right at home in Zionsville. Our park system spans more than 800 acres, including the Big-4 Rail Trail, which connects our northern and southern borders while providing easy access to neighborhoods and
parks along the way. A favorite among runners, bikers and nature lovers, it’s the perfect place to take a stroll with friends, family, colleagues or pets.
Eight generations of Hoosiers have called Zionsville home since 1852, when local landowner Elijah Cross platted the town and named it after his business partner, William Zion. Just a few years later, writers praised our town for its natural beauty, business enterprise and strong moral character. We were also recognized for having one of the finest schoolhouses in the state. In 1861, president-elect Abraham Lincoln stopped here to address our citizens from the back of his train. Just four years later, his funeral train passed through, and our residents gathered once more to honor our fallen leader. Our history is an essential part of who we are, and it continues to shape our future.
On behalf of nearly 35,000 residents, it is my pleasure to welcome you, whether you are visiting or looking for a place to build your dreams. The smiles you see here are as real as the bricks that run through the heart of our town.
If there’s anything we can do to make your time in Zionsville more enjoyable, please reach out to me or our town staff. Our motto is, “Zionsville. For all the right reasons.” I trust you’ll find plenty of reasons to love our town just as much as we do.
John Stehr Mayor of Zionsville
WITH HONORS
ZIONSVILLE WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION
Writer / Renée Larr
The White House and the National Science Foundation recently recognized Zionsville West Middle School teacher Kara Benson with the nation’s highest honor for K-12 educators in math and science—the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This prestigious honor celebrates outstanding teachers who demonstrate exemplary instructional methods, leadership, and lifelong learning in STEM education.
Benson, a veteran educator with a career spanning three decades, was nominated by Ryan Flessner, a professor at Butler University. Benson participated in the Teacher Leadership group through the Partnership for Inquiry Learning. She also took part in Flessner’s Teacher Research group, where she spent the year with other teachers designing and implementing a research project in her classroom.
She first applied for the award in 2022 while teaching at Boone Meadow Elementary in Whitestown. That year, she was named a state finalist—one of only five teachers in Indiana to receive the distinction. However, due to delays in the selection process, the final award recipients were
not announced until January 2024, when President Biden simultaneously recognized three years’ worth of winners.
“I think it’s still dawning on me what a big deal this is,” Benson says. “I’m not the type to shine a light on my accomplishments, so it feels a little uncomfortable but also really exciting.”
Winning the PAEMST requires far more than an excellent track record in the classroom. Once nominated, teachers undergo a rigorous application process that includes:
• A video submission showcasing their teaching in action.
• A 10-page written response analyzing instructional methods, student engagement, and assessment strategies.
• Letters of recommendation from colleagues and educational leaders.
• A review by both state and national committees, culminating in a selection by the President’s office.
“The award takes a holistic look at teaching,” Benson says. “It evaluates everything from content mastery and instructional methods to leadership and reflective practice.”
Throughout her career, Benson has taken an inquiry-based approach to math and science instruction. While teaching at Boone Meadow, she had the unique opportunity to integrate STEM concepts across disciplines.
“My students weren’t just learning math in isolation—they were applying it,” Benson says. “We analyzed real-world data in
science experiments, explored engineering through LEGO robotics, and even connected math concepts to our school’s gardening program.”
Now teaching fifth-grade math at Zionsville West Middle School, Benson acknowledges that time constraints make interdisciplinary teaching more challenging. However, she remains committed to engaging students through curiosity-driven learning.
“I carefully design prompts that spark questions,” Benson says. “Students lead the inquiry, and I tie their discoveries back to the math concepts they need to learn. When
ZIONSVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
they’re invested in finding answers, the learning becomes more meaningful.”
In addition to the national recognition, PAEMST winners typically receive a $10,000 personal award from NSF and an invitation to Washington, D.C., for professional development and networking with fellow awardees. However, Benson and her fellow winners are currently facing uncertainty regarding their prize due to federal funding freezes.
With nearly 30 years in education, Benson credits her success to the mentors, colleagues, and students who have shaped

her teaching journey. “I’ve had incredible teachers guide me, and I’ve learned just as much from the educators I’ve mentored,” Benson says. “Collaboration is key—none of us grow in isolation.”
As for what’s next, Benson is taking a moment to appreciate this milestone. “It feels like a pinnacle moment in my career,” she says. “But at the same time, I know there’s always more to learn and new challenges to take on.”

“We’re celebrating all things Viking,” says Ana Disselhorst, Whitestown Parks and Recreation Events Coordinator. “Our festival invites everyone to experience a variety of Viking-themed reenactments, musical performances, and a Viking Village. It’s truly a family-friendly event, with something for people of all ages!”
Visitors can expect to watch Viking reenactors battle in the arena, enjoy live performances from Viking and Nordic musical acts, and witness fire dancers showcasing their skills. Adults can also test their strength in a Keg Toss competition while kids can try their hand at the Iron Skillet Toss. “Children will love our assortment of inflatables, and those 2 years old and under can attend for free!” says Disselhorst.
Since its humble beginnings in 2018,
the Whitestown Viking Fest has grown tremendously. What started with 16 artisan vendors and 4 food vendors now boasts 46 artisan vendors and 10 food vendors. New this year, attendees can enjoy a vegan food truck in addition to the traditional Viking-inspired cuisine. In 2024, the festival attracted over 4,500 visitors, and it continues to grow in both size and quality.
Tickets are available online in advance for just $7 (before April 24), or pay $10 by card only at the gate. The Whitestown Parks Department cannot accept cash at the entry gate. Each purchased ticket is good for a single date. “The Whitestown Viking Fest is the ultimate adventure and celebration of Viking culture, music, food, and fun!” says Disselhorst. “Join us for an unforgettable experience you won’t want to miss! Skol!”

LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR LAUNCHING FIRE TRUCK ADVENTURE FOR KIDS
Children tend to learn the best through games, and what better way to learn about firefighters than to play at being one? Aaron Melvin, a volunteer firefighter since 1999 and a longtime substitute teacher, hopes to officially launch Fire Truck Adventure for Kids, one of nine Fantastic Fire Department
Writer / Emily Whitcomb
(FFD) franchises in the nation, this May.
Already an entrepreneur, Melvin met the FFD franchise owner at the National Foam Convention in 2024, and met with him last year to test-run the different party programs. Melvin, working alongside his wife, Melissa, and two sons, Ean and Jackson, brings joy to kids - boys and girls alike, no matter their age.
“We show up with lights and sirens to get the kids all excited,” he says. “We will teach them a little bit of fire history, a little bit of fire safety, and then basically let them be kids. We let them explore the truck. We let them turn on the lights, the siren - especially the birthday boy or girl. We let them try on turnout gear or our uniforms, and we actually let them spray the fire hose.”
Melvin drives a retrofitted 1988 Ford C8000 fire engine, bought from a fire station in
southern Alabama. It was in service until it was bought by Melvin.
For birthday parties, packages are either 45 or 60 minutes in length. The 60-minute package allows for a ride in the truck at the end of the party. Melvin’s school or day care visits are two hours long to accommodate larger parties, splitting the program into half-hour chunks to allow all the kids to have the full experience.
In addition to the standard birthday party and school or day care packages, Melvin offers a Water Day package and an Epic Party package, which work alongside his other company, Foam-O-Fun. A Water Day package is very similar to a regular birthday party package, but with much more water involved. Kids get to play with toy water guns, play with tubs of water, and throw absorbent water balls. This package is intended for schools or day care centers.
The Epic Party package includes an hour of birthday party activities followed by an hour of playing with foam, and is intended for birthday parties. No matter the package, Melvin and his crew center the kids and allow them to roam from activity to activity at their pace and according to their interests.
As Melvin and his family get ready to launch the concept in May, they’re actively on the lookout for more employees for the summer season. In particular, they are seeking out mature high-school-aged kids who have their driver’s license. Employees would transport equipment to the gigs and lead the parties alongside Melvin and his family. Anyone is welcome to apply.
Fire Truck Adventure for Kids is a children’s entertainment company and should not be called for emergencies. It is not affiliated with any fire departments.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
HOMETOWN WINDOW AND DOOR COMPANY
Writer / Ryan Gabbert
Home maintenance can feel overwhelming for any homeowner. There’s always something that needs fixing or upgrading, and it often happens all at once. Few tasks bring as much hesitation as replacing windows; many assume the process will be stressful, whether due to pushy sales tactics or a lengthy construction ordeal. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Whether it’s warped frames, broken seals, poor insulation or rising energy bills, window issues can pile up, especially in older homes. The biggest question homeowners face is, where do you start? With so many options, it can feel overwhelming. The answer is simple: Hometown Window and Door Company (HWDC).
Locally owned and operated, HWDC specializes in expert window and door replacements across Indianapolis and surrounding areas. Their team brings skill and precision to every project, offering a variety of styles, including awnings, bay windows and sliding doors. Unlike bigbox stores, HWDC provides personalized solutions tailored to each customer’s needs. Their mission is service over profit, ensuring homeowners are completely satisfied with their results.
In early 2024, Udi Abdelhak joined HWDC as the marketing and sales director, bringing extensive industry experience and expertise in Andersen products. HWDC offers the full Andersen product line, guaranteeing premium materials and exceptional craftsmanship in every project.
“Think about it like going to a tire shop,” Abdelhak says. “You might go in needing one new tire but leave replacing all four because the technician explained the value - better performance and long-term savings. That’s how we approach windows. Too often, homeowners regret replacing all their windows based on a salesperson’s pitch. Our job isn’t to push unnecessary replacements. It’s to educate, consult and empower customers to make the right choice for their homes.”
Abdelhak understands that window solutions aren’t one-size-fits-all. A job done right requires attention to detail and a commitment to quality. The HWDC team works closely with homeowners to create customized solutions that fit their homes and budgets.
“Many companies focus on making a quick sale - push for the contract, collect the check and move on,” Abdelhak says. “But we take a different approach. A proper window consultation takes time to do right. Our goal is to ensure homeowners get the best
solution for their needs.”
Beyond exceptional customer service, HWDC offers top-quality products, including a full line of Andersen windows and doors. Their direct access to Andersen products allows them to repair or replace Andersen windows, update hardware, or swap out sashes - solutions many companies simply can’t provide.
With years of experience in the window industry, Abdelhak knows what sets HWDC apart: the personal touch. “I take great pride in my work,” he says. “My goal is for every customer to feel like a friend. If a homeowner thinks, ‘I’m really glad Udi came by,’ then I’ve done my job right.”
At HWDC, customers come first. Their goal is for every homeowner to reflect on their experience with the confidence that a trusted neighbor handled their home with care. As HWDC continues to grow, this commitment remains at the heart of everything they do.

HANDPICKED HOMES
TOURING THE PARADE OF HOMES
Writer / Ashley Watters Photographer / Robert Jones
If you’ve ever done it, then you’ll know that the home buying or building process is a huge undertaking. There are so many options to choose from - countertops, flooring, wall colors, layout - and how do you know if it will all come together into a cohesive living space? Wouldn’t it be great if you could see the latest trends before making your choice? Now, you can.
The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI) will be hosting its annual Parade of Homes. A tradition spanning more than 77 years, the Parade of Homes gives potential homebuyers a rare look inside homes across central Indiana with the goal of showcasing the latest trends.
Breaking from the traditional format of home tours which take place in a single, centralized location or neighborhood, the Parade of Homes brings attendees into more than 60 homes from 20 builders across Indianapolis, ranging from Bargersville to Noblesville and Brownsburg to Greenfield.
With significant growth in the Indianapolis metro area, BAGI hopes to highlight new
and innovative construction methods and trending design concepts, which can be found throughout these showcased homes. Homes range in price point, architectural elements, layout, size and location. There are options for families of all income levels and sizes.
“New home construction has never been a better option,” says Ashley Parks, director of account services with BAGI. “With homes on the tour ranging from $250,000 to $4 million-plus, townhomes to single family, there’s something for everyone.”
Tickets to the event are free, but will need to reserved at bagi.com/parade-ofhomes/2025/tickets. These all-access tickets provide entry into all homes and
various events around the city.
“Attendees are also invited to join us at our additional activation events,” says Parks. “These free events will take place at various locations around central Indiana and will be a fun break from visiting the homes. Guests will be able to have food and drink and tour some interesting locations before heading back out to see more homes.”
To ensure all attendees have a positive experience, visitors are asked to observe a few rules. BAGI requests that all highheeled shoes be removed before entering homes and that excessive noise be avoided. Children are encouraged to attend, but must be kept under supervision at all times, and strollers should be left outside or in cars. Homes may not accommodate visitors with mobility issues.
The Parade of Homes is a good opportunity for potential homebuyers to communicate with builders. Bring all your burning questions and uncover where designers get their inspiration. Builders will be onsite throughout the tour to educate the public about different home options while providing a sneak peek into the finished products. Many of the homes on the tour are move-in ready.
BAGI’s Parade of Homes is set to take place April 25 through 27 and May 2 through 4. To learn more, visit bagi.com/parade-ofhomes/2025.

THE JANEWAYS
A POSITIVE PANDEMIC TAKEAWAY
Writer / Ashley Watters
If there was ever a positive takeaway from the pandemic, it’s The Janeways, a rock ‘n’ roll cover band jamming out popular songs from the 80’s and 90’s; this high-octane group of strong women formed with goals of merging musical passion with a fun hobby. What started as a project went full-on IRL in November 2020.
Seeking a unique and timeless vibe, the five ladies opted for the name The Janeways. The Janeways is comprised of local femmes: Ellie Brown on lead vocals, Amanda Leet on lead guitar, Joan Champagne on rhythm guitar and vocals, Debbie Shook on bass, and Amber Nunes on drums.
This ragtag group of ladies, who started as School of Rock students, now wow their own crowds across Boone County. You can hear their music being blasted at corporate events, community gatherings, Zionsville Street Dance, and local bars and restaurants.
“As we’ve evolved, it’s been incredibly fulfilling to achieve our goals of learning and performing. Even more importantly, we realize how much our story can inspire others. We love to share the message that it’s never too late to learn something new, to challenge yourself, and to have fun doing it,” says Leet.
As newbies, the group received an outpouring of support from their families, friends, local groups, and the musical community. Now, they are learning from some of the top names in musical entertainment.
“Every person we met was more than willing to share their experience and knowledge and help us choose songs, learn to play, perform better, and book local gigs. We have been fortunate to be mentored by the likes of Dane Clark, drummer for John Mellencamp, and Jason Hayes, frontman for the Flying Toasters. Dane even gave us one of his original songs to record,” says Leet.
Most of the band members also manage mom duties alongside their playing schedule. Despite the additional challenges this poses, they feel that the benefits outweigh the struggles.
“We want our kids to know that it’s important to invest in yourself and not to be afraid of hard work and taking risks. As for our husbands, we like to think they are in awe of being married to rockstars,” says Leet.
Additionally, The Janeways love to support a good cause. They often play nonprofit events to help raise awareness and funds for meaningful causes such as mental health, breast cancer awareness, foster care, and heart health.
You can see The Janeways live at one of their upcoming performances. They’ll be playing at Grand Junction Brewery on April 25, White River Yacht Club on May 2, Urban Apples on May 24, and Boone County Summerfest on May 30.

A LASTING LEGACY
SYLVIA’S CHILD ADVOCACY CENTER TURNS 15
Writer / Renée Larr
In Boone County, a small but mighty organization is making an immeasurable impact on the lives of children affected by abuse and trauma. Sylvia’s Child Advocacy Center, led by Executive Director Kassie Frazier, provides a safe space for young victims to share their stories, receive critical support and begin their healing journey. With a dedicated team and a multidisciplinary approach, the center ensures that every child’s voice is heard while working to bring perpetrators to justice.
Sylvia’s serves children aged 2 to 18 who have experienced sexual abuse or physical abuse, or have witnessed a traumatic event, such as domestic violence or even homicide. The Department of Child Services refers most cases after a child makes an outcry of abuse. Sylvia’s steps in to provide a structured forensic interview - a legally sound, trauma-informed process designed to allow children to share their experiences in a safe and supportive environment.
These interviews are just the first step in a more extensive investigation. The center
works closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes law enforcement, prosecutors, medical professionals and mental health experts. “After our interview, law enforcement investigates the perpetrator, the prosecutor works on protective orders and charges, and mental health professionals step in to provide trauma-focused therapy,” Frazier says.
Beyond forensic interviews, the center offers long-term advocacy for children and their families. Each child is assigned a victim advocate who remains by their side from the moment they enter the center until their case reaches resolution. “Many families are scared when they first come in,” Frazier says. “Our advocate walks them through every step, answers their questions and helps them navigate challenges like financial hardship, housing instability or medical expenses.”
Sylvia’s prioritizes creating a comforting environment. Unlike a hospital or police station, the center is designed to feel warm and welcoming, with child-friendly spaces that make difficult conversations a little easier.
This year marks the 65th anniversary of Sylvia Likens’ tragic story - a case that became a catalyst for child protection laws in Indiana. Sylvia’s abuse and death in the 1960s led to Indiana adopting one of the nation’s most comprehensive mandatory reporting laws.
“Because of Sylvia’s case, Indiana requires every adult to be a mandated reporter,” Frazier says. “That means if you see or hear something, you are legally required to report it.”
In honor of this milestone and the center’s 15th anniversary, Sylvia’s is hosting a special awareness breakfast on April 22, at The Club at Holliday Farms in Zionsville. The event aims to educate the community on the importance of reporting abuse and supporting child advocacy efforts.
Funding remains one of the center’s biggest challenges. “Seventy-five percent of our budget comes from grants and state contracts, but those aren’t guaranteed,” Frazier says. “We need community donations to ensure we can continue our
work without relying solely on uncertain funding sources.”
Annual fundraising events like the Pedal Parade, golf outings and pickleball tournaments help bridge the financial gap, while bringing the community together for a cause that truly matters. But financial support isn’t the only way to contribute; raising awareness, advocating for children and supporting policies that protect them are equally crucial.
Sylvia’s stands as a beacon of hope for children in crisis. To continue their lifechanging work, they need the community’s support. Donations, advocacy and awareness can make all the difference in protecting the most vulnerable Boone County residents. The impact of Sylvia’s Child Advocacy Center is not just on the individual children it helps, but also on the entire community, as the nonprofit strives to create a safer, more caring environment for all.

Building connections and developing professional networking opportunities can be invaluable. For Kylie Heagy, a senior at Indiana University Indianapolis majoring in applied data science, these were key factors in participating in the Indy 500 Festival Princess Program. Heagy balances academics, community service and leadership roles, all while preparing for a future in business analytics. Now, as one of the newest ambassadors for the legendary Indy 500, she’s ready to inspire and engage with Hoosiers.
The 500 Festival Princess Program selection process is highly competitive, with hundreds of applicants vying for just 33 spots. Community involvement is a key component of the program, and Heagy is no stranger to giving back. She is actively involved in volunteer work through her sorority and a full-ride scholarship program that requires 20 hours of community service each year. One of her favorite volunteer roles is serving as a canine companion at Indy Humane, where she helps with dog enrichment and facility upkeep.
As a festival princess, she’s eager to expand her outreach. “One of my first planned events is working with the Center for Young Children at IU Indianapolis,” she says. “I also want to connect with young women in STEM fields, especially in tech, since being a woman in data science can be challenging. I hope to encourage more girls to pursue those paths.”
In addition, Heagy hopes to inspire young athletes. A former crosscountry runner, she wants to engage with student runners and

promote health and fitness - the core values of the 500 Festival. “The festival is all about celebrating movement and community, and I’d love to share that message with young runners,” she says.
On top of her duties as a festival princess, Heagy is preparing for graduation and the next step in her career. She has already secured a position in Rolls-Royce North America’s Graduate Development Program, where she’ll rotate through different roles in operations management before transitioning to a full-time business analyst position. Meanwhile, she’s also working toward her master’s degree in applied data science through IU’s accelerated program.
Despite the busy months ahead, Heagy is confident she’ll manage everything. “It’s something I’m passionate about, so I’ll make time for it,” she says. “The festival team is also really supportive and makes sure we prioritize our academics.”
In addition to her individual volunteer efforts, Heagy co-founded Notable Measures, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting youth music education. Founded in 2017 with fellow Zionsville musicians,
the organization has raised thousands of dollars to fund music programs across Indiana. “Zionsville has a well-funded music program, but not every community is as fortunate,” Heagy says. “We wanted to help make music education more accessible for other students.”
Though she has yet to meet many of her fellow festival princesses in person, Heagy is looking forward to the journey ahead. “From what I’ve seen in our group chats, it’s such a supportive group of women,” she says. “We all come from different backgrounds and I think we’ll learn a lot from each other.”
As she steps into this new role, Heagy is excited to represent Indianapolis and the 500 Festival. From inspiring young women in STEM to promoting health and wellness, she hopes to leave a lasting impact, just as the program has already done for her. With Heagy’s passion for service, leadership and education, she’s more than ready to take on the challenge.
