Determined to make a difference, Bev rallied friends and neighbors to launch a fundraiser aimed at raising awareness and funding critical research. The inaugural event, held in 2010, raised an astounding $88,000 in a single evening. Inspired by this success, she established the Bev Hartig Huntington’s Disease Foundation in 2011 to support researchers pursuing cutting-edge treatments and, ultimately, a cure.
Sadly, Bev passed away in 2023, but her legacy of compassion and determination lives on. Since its inception, the foundation has raised over $3.3 million to support Huntington’s Disease research, bringing hope to families affected by the disease.
This year, the community will once again come together to honor Bev’s mission at the 16th annual Evening of Inspiration on April 26 at 7 PM at the Fishers Event Center. Themed “Betting the House on a Cure!”, the event will feature gaming, auctions, and opportunities to support crucial research. Bev’s spirit continues to inspire, uniting people in the fight for a brighter future.

HAPPY HOUSING
VILLAGE OF MERICI OFFERS NEW LAWRENCE-BASED CONDOS
Writer / Natalie Platt
Nestled along the beautiful, historic Fort Harrison military loop on the northeast side of Indianapolis in the Lawrence neighborhood, Village of Merici is working to provide more affordable housing options for adults with disabilities.
The Brunette Condominiums, which once housed two companies of infantrymen, are now 34 new, ADA-compliant condos. This development is Village of Merici’s third affordable-housing collaboration, including North End Apartments in Carmel and Merici Village in Lawrence.
Through financial and building partnerships, Village of Merici provides supportive housing options, encouraging independent, selfdirected lives. Instead of affordable apartments with monthly rent and annual reporting documentation required by the state per occupant, The Brunette Condominiums offers a unique opportunity for affordable, permanent homeownership (with no annual paperwork). A person with a disability can now own their own home.
“Loneliness is the worst disability of all,” says Colleen Renie, executive director of Village of Merici. “Belonging and community is a
human need. That’s why our apartments and condos are in neighborhoods that are walkable. Being within walking distance to restaurants, banks and entertainment not only provides a way to be part of the community, but great job opportunities for our residents.”
The Village of Merici housing model supports the sense of belonging that drives humans to connect with one another, and enjoy the friendships and relationships that are meaningful. Their model promotes the rights of individuals to live near their peers, and to experience joy and love to live their best lives. The model also allows for full freedom and choice in residential options - and not just the options made available by state or federal agencies.
“Lawrence is a wonderful location,” Renie says. “There’s the new public library, the YMCA nearby, and many banks and restaurants for employment. While we don’t facilitate employment, we do provide services like homemaking, money management, and transportation into the community through Merici city rides, a volunteer-based transportation program for residents.”
Resident obligations include employment, rent/mortgage, monthly utilities, and phone and grocery expenses. There is a live-in manager at each complex with regular office hours and availability for after-hours emergencies. Although the specifics of duties vary slightly by location, the support managers serve in important resource roles for questions and
needs, as many residents have never lived on their own before. Each of the three locations of affordable housing has a livein tenant support manager.
Village of Merici is now utilizing more technology than ever before, and perpetually seeks new, innovative ways to offer a support model and community integration that maximizes independence for the individuals they serve. They have intentionally incorporated individualized assistive technology, by supplying an Amazon Echo Show 10 in each affordable housing unit at both North End Apartments and The Brunette Condominiums. This is made possible by grants from Healthcare Initiatives, Inc. and the Etchepare Family Foundation.
Residents at each location now have a wealth of assistive options at their fingertips. Additionally, Village of Merici provides staff to help with individual assessment, personalization of each device, and training for utilization.
Once again, Village of Merici pushes the boundaries on traditional expectations of those with disabilities by creating an environment of true independence. Community integration is more than just a place; it is the ability to truly connect with others.
Merici apartments are in high demand with very low turnover. If you wish to have your name placed on the waiting list, please apply with the Indianapolis Housing Agency at indyhousing. org, or contact Village of Merici at colleenrenie@villageofmerici.org. Or, call 317-292-9408. Village of Merici is located at 5707 Lawton Loop East Drive in Indianapolis.

TRANSFORMATIVE HOME MAINTENANCE
EXPERIENCE EXCELLENCE WITH HOMETOWN WINDOW AND DOOR COMPANY
Writer / Ryan Gabbert
Photographer / Robert Jones
Home maintenance can feel overwhelming for any homeowner. There’s always something that needs to be fixed, upgraded or replaced, and it usually all happens at once. As the old saying goes, “When it rains, it pours.”
Few tasks around the house bring as much hesitation as repairing or replacing windows. Many homeowners assume the process will be stressful, whether it’s dealing with high-pressure sales tactics or enduring a lengthy construction ordeal. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Whether it’s warped frames, broken seals, unstable locks, poor insulation or rising energy bills, countless issues can make window repair or replacement necessary. In older homes especially, these issues can pile up and seem insurmountable, making it feel like a massive undertaking to get everything updated and working properly.
When faced with a window issue, often the biggest question people ask is, where do you start? The abundance of options and companies out there can feel overwhelming, but the answer is simple: Hometown Window and Door Company (HWDC).
Locally owned and operated, HWDC specializes in expert window and door replacements across Indianapolis and the surrounding areas. With extensive experience in a variety of styles, including awnings, bay windows and sliding doors, their team brings both skill and precision to every project. Committed to excellence, HWDC ensures that each installation meets the highest standards, leaving homeowners with quality results they can trust.
Unlike big-box stores, HWDC provides personalized solutions tailored to each customer’s unique needs. Guided by their mission as a hometown company focused on service rather than profit, they go the extra mile to ensure every customer is completely satisfied with the results.
In early 2024, Udi Abdelhak joined HWDC as the marketing and sales director, bringing extensive industry experience and expertise in Andersen products. With a
deep understanding of the high standards customers expect from the Andersen brand, he ensures HWDC delivers toptier solutions. Offering the full Andersen product line, HWDC guarantees premium materials and exceptional craftsmanship in every project.
Every home improvement project should enhance the overall value of the home. Otherwise, it’s not worth the investment. Homeowners put their hard-earned money into upgrades that should not only bring them pride, but also provide a long-term return.
“Think about it like going to a tire shop,” Abdelhak says. “You might go in needing just one new tire, but you leave having replaced all four. Instead of feeling frustrated by the expense, you’re excited because the technician explained the value - the financial and emotional return, the improved performance of your car. That’s exactly how we approach windows. Too often, homeowners regret replacing all their windows because they made a decision based solely on a salesperson’s pitch. Our job isn’t to push unnecessary replacements; it’s to educate, consult and empower customers to make the right choice for their homes.”
Abdelhak understands that when it comes to windows, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. A job done right requires attention to detail and a commitment to quality. Abdelhak and the entire HWDC team are dedicated to working closely with customers to create customized solutions that suit their
homes and budgets.
“Many people make the wrong decisions about windows because their appointments are driven by sales tactics - push for the sale, collect the check and move on,” Abdelhak says. “But we take a different approach. Our goal is to consult with homeowners, ensuring they get the right product for their needs. A proper window consultation isn’t something that can be rushed. It takes time to do it right.”
Beyond exceptional customer service, HWDC offers top-quality products, including a full line of Andersen windows and doors. With a wide range of options, customers can find the perfect fit for their needs. No matter the challenge, HWDC is ready to help homeowners find the right solution.
“Being a full-service Andersen dealer comes with major benefits,” Abdelhak says. “We can repair or replace Andersen windows, swap out sashes, update hardware or replace entire units. Because of our direct access to all Andersen products, we can offer solutions that many other companies simply can’t.”
With years of experience in the window industry, Abdelhak understands what sets companies like HWDC apart. More often than not, it’s the personal touch, and that’s exactly where HWDC excels.
“I’ve worked with both large corporations and startups, so I understand what businesses focus on, “ Abdelhak says. “But for me it’s about more than just doing a job.
“BEING A FULL-SERVICE ANDERSEN DEALER COMES WITH MAJOR BENEFITS. WE CAN REPAIR OR REPLACE ANDERSEN WINDOWS, SWAP OUT SASHES, UPDATE HARDWARE OR REPLACE ENTIRE UNITS.”
—UDI ABDELHAK
I take great pride in my work. My goal is to leave every customer feeling like a friend. If a homeowner thinks, ‘I’m really glad Udi came by’, then I’ve done my job right. Lately I haven’t been in front of as many homeowners since I’ve been focused on my current role as the marketing and sales director, but that same level of care and professionalism is what I instill in my team. I train my people to treat customers the way they’d want to be treated.”
Abdelhak and the entire HWDC team are dedicated to providing services that not only meet, but exceed customer expectations, delivering a personalized experience that reflects the quality they deserve.
At HWDC, customers are the top priority. Their goal is for every homeowner to reflect on their experience with the confidence that a trusted neighbor handled their home with care. As HWDC grows, this commitment will always remain at the heart of everything they do.
Companies like HWDC prove that home renovations don’t have to be stressful; they can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Enhancing a home should feel like a well-earned reward for hard work, and the HWDC team is dedicated to making that a reality.

NEW LEASE ON LIFE
REALTOR GETS A SECOND CHANCE THROUGH ORGAN TRANSPLANT
Writer / Bailey Goldstein
Indiana realtor Tim Queisser danced with his wife, Cathy, at F.C. Tucker’s 2023 Christmas party two days before receiving the call that he was approved for a liver transplant.
“The most ironic thing is we were on the phone talking to our lawyer about my will,” says Tim.
When Cathy saw the call from Indiana University Health about the transplant, she ran out of the room. Within an hour, the couple arrived at the hospital for Tim’s operation. He received his new liver at midnight.
“These days I’m very joyful for what I have around me,” he says. “And grateful that I’m still alive.”
Tim was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis in 2006, a disease
that causes the immune system to attack the liver.
“He was told years ago that this will lead up at some point in time to needing a liver transplant,” says Cathy. “So we knew this was ahead of us.”
Tim entered IU Health at around 180 pounds. He spent more than 100 days in and out of the hospital due to complications. By the end of his stay, his weight had plummeted to 138 pounds. He endured an abdominal infection, a stint with a feeding tube and a daily regimen of 30 pills.
None of that stopped him. With the help of physical therapy, he took his first steps around the house, working up to the driveway and then the street.
The 70-year-old survivor lived to walk his daughter down the aisle, attend the wedding of his son and celebrate his mother’s 101st birthday. Tim even completed a three-mile journey for the 2024 Walk for Life event in support of organ donors and recipients.
“I don’t want to be a poor-me story,” says Tim. “I want to be a very positive story.”
Tim’s recovery would have been impossible without the Indiana Donor Network.
More than 1,000 Hoosiers are on the transplant waiting list. Anyone can sign up to be an organ donor through the network and save the lives of people like Tim.
St. Simon Festival May 31, 2024
Indiana Donor Network Walk to Save Lives. 3 Miles. Oct. 12, 2024
“They need donors, obviously,” says Tim. “The more people can do for that, the better off everybody is.”
The Queisser family has been with St. Simon parish for three decades. Their children, Kylie, Nate and Cory, attended the school through eighth grade. Tim received notes and letters from church members throughout his recovery.
“Cathy and I consider myself a minor miracle,” says Tim.
He announced his return to F.C. Tucker in February 2025, joining forces with fellow realtor, Patty Torr.
Tim embarked on his career as a real estate broker in 2012. He was inducted into F.C. Tucker’s Lifetime President’s Club by 2022, celebrating a sales volume of $5,000,000 for five years. However, he struggled during his first two years as a realtor until he learned a valuable lesson at a Butler Bulldogs basketball game that changed his perspective on life.
“This gentleman got up and spoke about him fighting cancer, and having a positive story and a positive attitude and prayer,” says Tim. “I wear a band now on my wrist. It’s a blue band that says ‘Stay positive’ and the backside says ‘G3’ which means give glory to God.”
That key moment on the basketball court was the catalyst that inspired his success in real estate.
Tim has led many lives. From 1983 to 2011, he was the manager and owner of the Snooty Fox pub. The restaurant boasted 130 seats and a catering operation. The defunct eatery’s namesake came to Tim during a backpacking trip through Europe, where he ran into an English pub with the mammalian moniker.
Tim’s establishment was featured on a 2011 episode of Food Network’s “Restaurant: Impossible”. Unfortunately, celebrity chef and television show host Robert Irvine failed to revitalize the pub, which closed less than a year later. Life had other plans in store for the Queissers.
Tim promised himself he would retire at 70, but the resilient realtor now looks forward to working for as long as he is healthy. When he is not on the hunt to find homeowners their perfect pad, he spends time with his loving family and his church, and cheers on his favorite team, the Butler Bulldogs.
Tim’s office at F.C. Tucker is located at 10404 Olio Road in Fishers. He serves central Indiana and the lake areas of Syracuse, Indiana. You can give him a call at 317-440-8324 or check out his realtor profile at talktotucker.com/tim.queisser for more information.

COCA-COLA CONSOLIDATED
SUSTAINABLE PARTNERSHIPS THAT HELP SUPPORT THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Writer / Ryan Gabbert
You would be hard-pressed to find someone on Earth who has not at least heard of Coca-Cola. It is easily one of the world’s most recognizable brands and one of the largest nonalcoholic beverage corporations out there. From the classic red logo to the iconic polar bear mascots, Coca-Cola has stood the test of time.
Todd Marty is the senior director of public affairs and sustainability for Coca-Cola Consolidated (CCC), the largest Coca-Cola bottler in the United States. While technically independent from The Coca-Cola Company, the two companies work closely together to bring delicious beverages to the people who love them.
Marty supports their sustainability efforts and has partnered with Interstate Business Solutions, a highway litter abatement company and second-chance employer based in Indianapolis. This partnership will increase recycling rates and reduce litter and landfill waste to keep Indiana healthy for the next
generation of Hoosiers.
“We met the Interstate team at an event supporting state representatives in downtown Indianapolis,” Marty says. “We quickly assessed that a partnership would help us both achieve our goals. Interstate is dedicated to serving our community through its second-chance employer program where men and women recently returning from incarceration or homelessness can find employment and other services that help with reintegration into society.”
“Their services include keeping the Indiana roadways clear of litter and debris,” Marty continues. “Interstate has teams working throughout Indiana and five other states daily. Increasing recycling rates and keeping our communities clean of litter is important to Coca-Cola Consolidated. Our plastic bottles and aluminum cans are designed to be remade and we are using recycled material to make our new packaging. We need to get our packaging back so we can make new packaging again and again. Interstate Business Solutions is one example of creating partnerships in the communities we serve that truly help make a difference.”
CCC and Interstate are joining forces to create a cleaner, more sustainable world, ensuring everyone can continue enjoying their favorite beverages together. CCC’s sustainability efforts are focused on three main pillars: Emission Reduction, Water Leadership and Package Recovery.
This partnership is dedicated to serving and bettering the communities that surround them. Interstate’s recidivism reduction helps get their employees back on their feet by paying a living wage, providing commuter options, assisting with housing, working with their parole officers and much more. Not only has this program had a 90% success rate at keeping their employees from returning to prison or the streets, but they are also cleaning up their communities while doing so and assisting CCC to recycle their products.
The bottles and cans produced by CCC are designed to be recycled. Through its “Refresh. Recycle. Renew.” program, CCC aspires to have 100% of their packing be recyclable or renewably sourced. It is committed to partnering with companies like Interstate across the territories it serves to increase the collection and reuse of its products.
In addition to this, CCC is proud to say that 100% of its manufacturing sites convert waste into energy, and it seeks to implement water-use efficiency policies across all of its facilities.
These days, many people are seeking ways to limit their carbon footprint and help clean up the environment in general. CCC recognizes and applauds this growth of consumer consciousness. Even though many companies like CCC are doing what they can, it’s still important to recognize we are all in this together.
“Be aware that our packaging is made to be remade,” Marty says. “Understand what your local MRF [material recovery facility] identifies as recyclable. Make sure you utilize the appropriate bins to dispose of these recyclables so the waste streams can be kept clean and not contaminated.”
Looking toward the future, CCC continues to partner with its customer base, local government and nonprofit organizations to support their three pillars of sustainability - always supporting the idea of a circular economy where innovative programs can help reduce waste and drive the reuse of bottles and cans.
Here in Indianapolis, CCC has several programs and projects underway that should improve recycling education and infrastructure, ultimately making our community cleaner and more efficient.

Letting Go: A Mom’s Journey to Kindergarten
As a first-time mom, I’ve cherished every milestone – celebrating the first words, the first steps, and the first time my child looked at me and said, “Mama.” I’ve also cried on the hard, exhausting days, leaning on the support and wisdom of those who have raised thriving, happy children for guidance.
But nothing quite prepares you for the moment your baby – now an excited, independent learner – walks into their new school for the first day of kindergarten. You’ve seen your friends’ social media posts filled with bright smiles and holding “First Day of School” signs, and you thought you were ready, but it still doesn’t ease the ache in your heart. After all, this is a new beginning, not just for them but for you, too.
A Year of Growth
Kindergarten is more than just an academic start. It’s learning to trust that your child is ready, that their teachers will nurture and love them, and that school will become their second home. And at Hamilton Southeastern Schools, that’s exactly what happens.
Enrolling Your Kindergartener
Hamilton Southeastern Schools offers full-day kindergarten at its 13 elementary buildings. To enroll, children must be five-years-old on or before August 1, 2025. Families may apply for early entrance if their child will turn five on or before September 30, 2025.
With small class sizes, dedicated teachers, and a hands-on curriculum, students are set up for success. They explore language, problemsolving, and gain a better understanding of the world around them, while also developing socially and emotionally.
Beyond the classroom, they’ll experience art, music, and physical education, eat lunch in the cafeteria, and make new friends on the playground. Most importantly, they’ll gain confidence, curiosity, and a love for learning in a safe, supportive environment.
It’s bittersweet, but I found the process easy – and by enrolling now, you can begin building excitement for what’s to come. Your family will also have the opportunity to visit your child’s new school during Kindergarten Open House set for April 17, 2025 at 5 p.m., and see firsthand the incredible experiences that await.
You’ll Be Okay – And So Will They
Now, as a mom to a soon-to-be first grader, I look back on this past year and realize how much we both grew. The tears I shed on that first day turned into smiles as I watch my child learning, making connections, and coming home with endless stories to tell.
So, if you’re on the verge of sending your little one to kindergarten, know this: They are ready. And so are you.
