In April of 2002, on the day of his senior prom, Chuck Haberman was involved in a terrible car accident that severed his left leg and had him questioning his future.

“I decided that I was not going to let this devastating thing define me,” Haberman says. “I was going to do something bigger than myself.” In February of 2007, Haberman joined the United States Marine Corps following boot camp in San Diego. After completing engineering studies in North Carolina, he was sent to Okinawa, Japan, and subsequently traveled to Thailand, the Philippines, mainland Japan, Australia and Southeast Asia. In Okinawa, his mission was demolition.

and his mission was to support and improve tactical mobility by providing route clearance, roadway development and bridging. Throughout his eight years of military service, Haberman discovered a passion for service as he saw the impacts of leadership and the power of relationships. When he returned to Indiana, he earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership, supervision and human resources management, as well as a master’s degree in organization development and change.

helping people realize their full potential. “I enjoy being in a position where I can help create structures and support systems for young adults to figure out next steps,” Haberman says. Haberman works with educators, trainers and business leaders in his current job. “I like bringing them all to the table and helping them understand the advantages and resources that are available from the government,” Haberman says. “It’s important for young adults to understand that they don’t know what they don’t know, and that’s OK. Look at me. I went from thinking I wanted to be an accountant to being a vocal performer to becoming a Marine. from different parts of Latin-inspired countries,” Newton says.

Carissa Newton grew up in Spain and fondly recalls all the delicious food flavors that crossed her lips as a child. For the longest time Newton, director of marketing for Cunningham Restaurant Group, wished Indianapolis had an authentic offering for some of those tasty meals, and now such a concept exists in Livery, a Latin-inspired eatery with a tapas-style menu. Livery has done well on Mass Ave in Indy, and customers there have frequently requested a location on the north side. Now they are getting their wish, as the second Livery location opened on Levinson Lane in Noblesville.

Popular offerings include empanadas, ceviche, and patatas bravas, which is red potato, Spanish soubise, cotija cheese, bravas sauce and cilantro. The eatery also serves traditional churros and flan for dessert.

“The intention is for customers to order many small bites and have different flavors

Other popular items include the house margaritas and specialty cocktails. The Carriage House margarita is a fan favorite, with Gran Centenario Añejo Tequila, orange brandy, lime and agave. The beer and wine menu, inspired by the region, includes items customers may not find at other restaurants or even at local liquor stores. Livery also has its own extensive tequila list. “Livery has some very unique items,” says

Newton, adding that it can be somewhat intimidating for unadventurous diners to dive into Livery’s concept and flavors. “Once they try it once or twice though, they’re hooked.” The empanadas are a customer favorite, and they rotate seasonally. The corn empanadas will soon be replaced by fall flavors. The restaurant also offers a red drum dish that includes sweet plantain, red potato, chorizo, chutney and chimichurri. Tacos are always popular, as is the roasted cauliflower appetizer. “We had a Brussels sprout appetizer that we removed from the menu once, and it was so frequently requested that it became a secret menu item,” says Newton, noting that Livery opted to officially bring it back to the menu.

8 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / atNoblesville.com

The small-plate concept enables customers to order three or four items in order to let taste buds dabble in a variety of flavors. Livery utilizes a scratch-kitchen approach with many fresh sauces, which means customers are introduced to flavors they might not otherwise experience in some mainstream restaurants. In addition to making these sauces and dishes from scratch, Livery tries to locally source as much as possible. “Plus, we have a greenhouse we own, which means we’re able to supply a lot of greens and vegetables for our restaurants,” Newton adds.

Though it might be a little scary and chaotic to open a new restaurant in the midst of a pandemic, Livery’s staff and management is taking all the necessary precautions to do so safely. “That’s one thing we hear a lot with the reviews that come in, that people do feel safe with the preparations and safety practices that we are taking,” says Newton, noting that all employees including the servers, cooks and kitchen staff wear masks, implement six-foot distancing guidelines, and sanitize frequently. The eatery uses plastic menu sleeves to

make the sanitation process easier, and offers guests QR codes if they prefer not to handle menus at all. Carry-out and online ordering are also options for guests who prefer to dine at home. Reservations can be made through the official website or via OpenTable. In addition, Livery offers outdoor patio seating as weather permits. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days per week, and the lunch menu includes a pick-two option (guests can choose a salad and a sandwich, or a sandwich and an appetizer). Livery Noblesville’s general manager is

Eric Paulini, and the executive chef is Rand Lennox. Both are eager to bring the Livery dining concept to the Noblesville area. “I’m sure patrons will love it,” Newton says. “What you get in a lot of these suburban or outside-of-Indianapolis areas is a good number of chain restaurants popping up, so any time there is a unique concept with a unique offering, people are drawn to it because it’s out of the normal.”

Reggie Stewart, founder of Reggie’s Motorworks in Noblesville, has many satisfied customers, and that’s the primary reason why he decided to open a new Noblesville shop - Noble Auto Service on 10th Street. “Because we specialize in working on European imports such as BMW, MercedesBenz, Volkswagen, Porsche, and many other European cars at Reggie’s Motorworks, we have many satisfied customers wanting to know if we can work on some other cars,” Stewart says. “The demand to work on these other cars was so great that it was time to start another business.”

“A lot of our customers have a brother or a parent that doesn’t drive a European car, but they have heard great things about the work we do at Reggie’s, so we want to be able to provide full-service work for all kinds of other vehicles,” Stewart says. “It’s been wonderful that so many people give us such great reviews. We have strived to be a very reputable car shop, and we will be providing the same excellent work at Noble Auto Service.”

“We are very proud of the work we do,” Stewart says. “Our goal is to always earn the respect of our customers, and make sure they want to come back to us. We have earned a stellar reputation for excellence, and it is our goal to not only be good today, but be better tomorrow.” Stewart says positive feedback from his customers is inspiring for the future.

“Customer service is paramount to us,” he says. “We are not going to be the lowestpriced shop in town, but you are going to get The team at Noble Auto Service provides the absolute highest-quality auto repair and oil and filter changes, tire care, tune ups, maintenance. Curtis Painter, customer experience manager for Indiana Liquor Group, says the upcoming Whiskeyfest, hosted by Noble Wine & Spirits and located at Mustard Seed Gardens event facility, will be a fun time for all. “Our Whiskeyfest events will serve as a means to fund our company charity, Spirits for Smiles, which aims to assist Hoosier families in gaining access to quality dental care they would otherwise not be able to afford without assistance,” Painter says. The first-ever Noblesville Whiskeyfest will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on October 15 at Mustard Seed Gardens. Painter says all proceeds from ticket sales and live auction will go to out charity. “Whiskeyfest will be host to over 50 samples of whiskeys, a lottery for the option to buy allocated products, and a live auction for some of the most sought-after bottles of whiskeys,” Painter says. “We will have various light hors d’oeuvres to enjoy throughout the event in the form of a charcuterie board, as well as non-alcoholic options.” Many items will be raffled and auctioned. “They are highly sought-after whiskeys with very limited access in Indiana,” Painter says. “The most exciting thing people can look forward to is to have the option to buy many of these items at normal retail value. All sampled items will be offered at a 10% discount during our event, minus our private-barrel picks.” Painter says Indiana Liquor Group

acquired Mr. G’s Liquors in December of 2019, and the group rebranded the store as Noble Wine & Spirits in June of 2020 as the first of its stores under the Indiana Liquor Group organization. Indiana Liquor Group was created by three local investors in 2018. The group currently operates 44 retail liquor stores throughout the north-central area of Indiana. “This is a very fun industry to be a part of,” Painter says. “Beer, wine and spirits have a way of bringing people together for special occasions such as holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, etcetera. To be able to provide a bit of excitement to people is rewarding. When you can pair that with our charity, and doing good for Hoosiers in the communities we service, it is even better.” Painter says the event organizers plan to take appropriate safety and health

measures for guests in light of the coronavirus pandemic, including table distancing, hand sanitizers and signage regarding masks. Painter says Noble Wine & Spirits will also adhere to the guidelines Mustard Seed Gardens has in place for events. “We want this to be a fun and safe event for attendees, all while following the governor’s mandate in place,” Painter says. Noble Wine & Spirits is located at 2209 Connor Street in Noblesville. For more info, call 317-773-3471 or visit noblespirits. com. Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

OCTOBER 2020

To stay active and motivated, the group signs up for various races. To train for those races, the team uses a smartphone application called Strava, which is like a social media platform for endurance athletes. The mobile fitness tracking application, which has 60 million users globally, enables users to upload and analyze their workouts. “Think Facebook but with an endurance support focus,” says Dailey of the application, explaining that athletes can track runs on their watch or other device, and the information is imported into the

application. Team members can see each other’s accomplishments, and can like or comment on performances. Club members participate in races throughout the year including 5K runs and full marathons. Members mostly do road races and relays. In 2015 Dailey ran a sixday, 314-mile race, for which he ran across the state of Tennessee. According to Dailey, the team members mostly participate in middle and long distances. When Dailey turned 40 he pledged to run a coast-to-coast race, and this year the club decided to participate in the Great American 5000 race, an annual 3,107-mile run from San Francisco to New York. When Dailey learned that the race was going to be virtual this year due to the pandemic, he assembled a team of 24 members, most of whom are in their early to mid 40s and are spread across seven states. Every day each team member had to run one hour per day, and could run anywhere they wanted in that hour. Once they uploaded their mileage to the site, that progress was aggregated and the team’s pin moved across the country as miles were completed. Though each team member ran as fast and as far as they could during their 60 minutes each day, the number of miles logged usually varied. For instance, the team’s top runner

was logging between nine and 11 miles in an hour, and the team also had a relatively new runner whose mile times clocked between nine and 10 minutes. To help prevent injuries, Dailey and his local teammates went to the Recovery Room in Carmel when they were sore. They used NormaTec arm, leg and hip sleeves to push excess fluid out of tight muscles, and cryotherapy to reduce inflammation and increase circulation. The runners were diligent about stretching before and after workouts. “You’ve got to roll, ice and get your sleep,” Dailey says. All the hard work paid off, as Dailey’s team won the Great American 5000 by 550 miles. It was an impressive feat considering that more than 250 teams consisting of 4,500 runners from across the country participated. Though Dailey’s team didn’t consist of Olympic athletes, they ran against running legends like Ben True and Michael Wardian, who set a world record for fastest marathon while pushing a stroller. “Wardian is also the only person ever to run seven marathons on seven continents in seven days, and sub-three all seven of them,” Dailey says. “I think the professional aspect

of it validated it for us, and then performing way over and above our expectations made the win even sweeter.” Every day Dailey’s team was turning in running times that surprised even themselves. “It’s funny because you wake up in the morning and you run a race at a particular pace,” Dailey says. “The next week you’re out running 500 yards at that same pace and you’re thinking, ‘How did I run a sevenminute-pace marathon and now seven minutes feels like a five-minute mile?’” On day 11 of the Great American 5000, two team members named Phil and Will, who are in the personal aviation industry, were in Colorado. Phil posted a picture to the group’s online thread titled, “Will & Phil & Lance the Champ.” As it turns out, they were in Aspen helping Lance Armstrong interview pilots for his personal plane, and they invited him to go running with them. “That was really cool,” Dailey says. “That’s like playing golf with Tiger Woods.” For more info on the Meshingomesia Track Club, visit facebook.com/meshtc.

OCTOBER 2020

Originally born in Pittsburgh, DeVinney and her family moved to small-town Indiana when she was in middle school, and she went on to become a three-sport athlete at Boone Grove High School. “I went to a small school, and it just gave me a lot of opportunities that I may or may not have had in other places,” says DeVinney of her time at Boone Grove. “I really just enjoyed my time at Boone Grove, and it obviously has a special place in my heart.”

DeVinney attended Purdue University to pursue a degree in education. While at Purdue she participated in intramural sports, but she needed something more to scratch her itch for competition, which led her to coaching. “I went to a small school, and we never advanced in the sectional,” DeVinney says. “We never got to cut a net down. That just stuck with me.” DeVinney got her coaching start under Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Jan Conner at Benton Central High School, before landing her first head coaching role at Pike High School in 1997 where she was also a teacher. Following her time at Pike, DeVinney worked as a teacher and girls basketball coach at Seymour High School (2001-2012) and Lebanon High School (2012-2018). After devoting her life to coaching for more than two decades, DeVinney decided it was time for something new, and accepted the

athletic director role with Sheridan High School in 2018. “When you’re a coach I don’t think people realize the hours, time, and the fact that your whole life is coaching,” DeVinney says. “I decided it was just time to try something different. That’s not to say I can never go back to coaching.” With roots in small-town Indiana, DeVinney says the tight-knit community surrounding Sheridan High School has been the perfect fit for her. “Everybody here is just really great,” DeVinney says. “Our principal is amazing. He’s such a great leader. He’s kind and thoughtful. It’s just really nice to work in that atmosphere, where people have our back and are just kind. I really feel like our whole entire building is the same way.” You can keep up with Sheridan High School athletics at SheridanAthletics.net.

rand Champion Janel Keesling knows what it’s like to walk into a car dealership as a woman and feel pressured and overwhelmed. “We’d like to think the world treats women equally, but there are presumed biases,” says Keesling, who, along with her husband Cole, owns CarSnoop, an innovative way to buy, lease or trade-in a vehicle from your phone, or computer. The beauty of CarSnoop is that dealerships don’t have any idea of the customer’s gender or race—only the city in which they reside. Hence, the buying experience is simplified. “In light of the pandemic, we’ve all changed the way we buy everything,” says Keesling, noting that consumers would rather browse for cars while relaxing on their back porch than wander countless dealerships. “We do all the legwork and even have a full concierge service to find the car you desire,” says Keesling. “Want a blue 2020 Honda Accord with XYZ features? We’ll find the best offers from dealerships.” CarSnoop enables the buyer to do all the paperwork from home and then they deliver the car directly to your home. “You literally don’t have to go anywhere,” says Keesling. “It’s a stress-free experience all the way around.”

WOMEN FOR THE “WIN” WOMEN IN NOBLESVILLE PROVIDES NETWORKING AND SOCIAL OPPORTUNITIES “Coffee and Connect” is informal networking event for women in business. There is no charge to attend the monthly events, and the meetings provide opportunities for women to do more than just trade business cards. These events foster business and personal relationships that often lead to business. While joining the Chamber of Commerce is not a requirement for attending any of the WIN events, programs or workshops, the goal is to encourage women to learn more about the benefits of membership.

Five years ago, the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce recognized the need for an effective way to support women in the community. They identified key areas to provide opportunities for women to gather socially, grow, network and serve the community. Women in Noblesville (WIN) was formed for women business owners and they now have the support, resources and opportunities to meet monthly, quarterly and annually. The concept has indeed proven to “I attend the ‘Coffee and Connect’ regularly be a win for women in Noblesville. because the women that come together could very well be driving next to each other “WIN is an extension of the Chamber - it’s on the road and might not ever connect an initiative put on by the Chamber,” says otherwise,” says Sherrell Bundy Smith, a Kathy Young, vice president of commercial WIN member and small business owner. banking for First Merchants Bank. “But here we are connecting in a meaningful way and helping each other out. “Wine & Wisdom” is another annual event offered by WIN. This year’s event will be held on October 5 at Spencer Farm Winery. “This is an opportunity to enjoy the company of other businesswomen with a glass of wine, where we have guest speakers or a panel discuss topics that tend to be a bit more personal than just business,” Brown says. “The women will get into smaller groups to have more intimate conversations.” Young adds that WIN leaders plan to get involved in philanthropic projects in the future. “The group has also offered luncheons, after-hour business building events and panel discussions, and these are conducted at women-owned businesses in Noblesville,” Young says. For information on Women In Noblesville events and programs, and to register for the “Wine & Wisdom” event, visit noblesvillechamber.com.

“WIN brings in a keynote speaker, and breakout sessions, time for networking, a marketplace for business owners to showcase what they do, and panel discussions are some of the elements of this event,” Young says.

Starting at a very young age I had a strong interest in photography and photos in general. I was always the one with the camera at gatherings of friends and family. During high school I would often shoot a roll of film over the weekend. These days it’s all digital for me. I always wanted to be a stay at home mom. My husband of almost 22 years, Mark was very supportive of this choice. So, that was my first career. My kids (ages 11-19) don’t need me as much now. So, I’m excited to be pursuing my second career as a photographer. My favorite subjects are high school seniors, even the often reluctant boys! I also shoot children, families & the occasional wedding.

PREVAIL, INC. ENCOURAGES THE COMMUNITY TO “GO PURPLE” DURING OCTOBER FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PREVENTION MONTH Prevail, Inc., a Hamilton County-based non-profit organization advocating for victims of crime and abuse is asking for community partners to join them as they “Go Purple” during National Domestic Violence Prevention Month in October. During this 2020 “Go Purple” Campaign, Prevail is offering to local businesses and community members a simple way to stand with each other and work to end acts of violence together. “Domestic violence often happens behind closed doors and it is not seen as something that makes good conversation.” said Susan Ferguson. “From our perspective, the more we talk about

it, the safer it is for survivors to come forward and ask for help; while creating a community that makes perpetration unacceptable. If you talk about domestic violence openly with your friends and family, you will hear from the people in your circle who have experienced it and you will be in a position to refer them to the help they need. Going Purple is one way to start the conversation.” Prevail is asking the community to be creative, pick a day and wear purple. Share your group’s pictures with Prevail and use the hashtag #GoPurplePrevail. To sign up, simply visit Prevail’s website at www.prevailinc.org.

Over the past 34 years Prevail has served nearly 50,000 victims of crime and abuse in our community. Last year, out of the almost 4,000 clients served at Prevail, 52% of clients served were adults, teens, and children who were victims of family violence. Domestic violence is complex. While crisis intervention is an important immediate response to domestic violence, there is a great need to raise awareness and develop effective prevention strategies. Photographer Katie Plummer

LOCAL BUSINESS SPECIALIZES IN PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY Writer / Peyton Gigante Photography Provided

Throughout all of life’s curveballs, setbacks and obstacles, photographer Katie Plummer has always found a way forward. Starting her own business, providing for her kids, and living a life of passion and creativity all became her goals along the way. The Studio Kate, Plummer’s portrait photography business, started as a part-time endeavor in 2006 and remained a hobby until around five years ago. “Even though I was doing it as a business, my focus was being a stay-at-home mom,” Plummer says. “Life kind of forced me to go further with it. In the last six years, and more so in the last three years, it has evolved into a full-time business for me.” A mother of three, Plummer wanted a career that fueled her passion for creativity but allowed her time with her kids and her husband Jeremy. Her love for photography started during her time as photo editor for the Hamilton Southeastern High School newspaper. “It just kept coming back to me, and circling back in my life,” Plummer says. Around six years ago, Plummer found herself in need of a fresh start. While working as an Uber driver, a substitute teacher and a photographer to provide for herself and her kids, she decided to jump-start her career and create the life she wanted.

“I found myself with no home, no car, and living in my parents’ home along with my kids,” Plummer says. “It was during that time when I thought, ‘This is the time that I need to think about what I want to do with my life.’” In 2016 Plummer and her kids - Landon, 16, Ava, 14, and Haddie, 9 - moved into a new apartment, and her three jobs gave her the momentum she needed to dive headfirst into her photography business. With the help of friends and family, and word of mouth throughout the community, Plummer’s photography business saw an incline in demand. She found herself developing a love for the business side of her endeavor, working with Jeremy to fuel the business from every angle. “My husband helps me with the back side of the business – the website and the IT – and I handle the creative side,” Plummer says. “We really complement each other.” Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the couple found ways to revamp and run the business, and they saw a welcome boom in business in the last six months. “We really started to slow down and focus on some of the things in the background that we would miss when we’re up and running, and functioning full time - things like our website and redoing our pricing.” Plummer says. “It was refreshing for us.”

26 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / atNoblesville.com

Plummer has recently focused on finding new ways to photograph her clients and navigate daily changes that have resulted from the pandemic. “I love senior photo shoots,” Plummer says. “I love making people feel good about themselves. During family shoots, I always want the mom to feel beautiful. They are always so worried about everybody else, and so I try to capture a picture that they love.” Plummer focuses on making each customer feel special, seen and beautiful. Her business has blossomed into a life of passion and creativity, with a love for what she does and a special talent for making other people feel special. “With the power people have in supporting small businesses, they may not realize the gift they hold in their hands,” Plummer adds. “Part of what I feel like I’m here for is to connect with other small businesses. I really think that shopping small and being intentional about supporting the people you live around is important.” The Studio Kate is located at 874 Logan Street in Noblesville. Ashlin Hadden, owner of Ashlin Hadden Insurance Agency in Noblesville, believes unique, grassroots marketing campaigns are some of the best ways to meet new clients. “When I started in the insurance industry, I was bombarded with people who ran away from me because no one really liked insurance agents,” Hadden says. “I was told that most people think insurance agents are worse than a used car salesman. I wanted to change that. I wanted to show people that insurance agents are not all like that.” Hadden, who started her agency in 2008, also wanted people to know she was involved with her community. “I wanted to change the stigma of insurance agents,”she says. “I started by doing events with the local parks departments, schools, and pet events. I wanted to focus on events that were special to me, so kids and pets are what we focused on.”

Hadden has also started using a train to promote her business.

“I found some really fun holidays that could tie in to what we were doing,” Hadden says. “For September it was National Talk Like A Pirate Day, so we thought it would be neat to try to convert the train into a pirate ship.”

“This year, with COVID-19, I wanted to do something really out of the normal,” she says. “My kids and I felt trapped in the house, and I was feeling very blue. One

Hadden says the community response to the train has been positive. “The community has responded so well,”

she says. “We were taking it for a test drive and we saw someone taking pictures. When I got back to the office, I had a voicemail. It was from a woman from The Enclave Senior Living at Saxony. She asked me if there was any way that I can bring the train to their residence. I was so excited to bring some smiles to their faces. We decided to do a September Ride for Grandparents Day.” Hadden says children have also enjoyed the train. “The neighborhood kids have just loved it,” she says. “I have heard so many kids say, ‘This is the best thing all year,’ or, ‘I have never ridden a train before.’ To see the joy in their eyes and the excitement in their voices

has been so amazing. I am truly in love with the joy this train is bringing.” Hadden says the pirate theme was particularly well received by the community. “We visited Chapel Woods, Brighton Knoll, Waterman Farms and Enclave Senior Living on September 13,” she says. “We dressed up the train like a pirate ship. We encouraged neighbors in the residences to dress like a pirate, and we handed out eye patches to the first 100 residents in each neighborhood.” Upcoming train events include a “Little Haunted” ride in October and “A Ride with Santa” in December. “My hope is to do a ride one time a month in the community,” Hadden says.
