The Gathering

PEOPLE OF TOMORROW,

WELCOME TO THE TH 10 YEAR OF HAPPINESS! You have brought your Keys, and the Gates to Happiness are about to be opened! Hello, friends. Once more, you are welcome. Each and every one of you has received a very special key. With it, you have already unlocked one pair of doors – with it, you have gained access to the tenth year of Tomorrow. Now that the call of the key has led you here, to the very gates of happiness, all you need to do is step through. A world of joy awaits. First, there is the DreamVille Gathering, geared to show you the way to the festival proper. At the festival, you will get lost. Lost in thought, lost in the crowd,

lost in the music. You will meet wondrous creatures of Tomorrow and make wonderful new friends. They will help you seek out that which you need to find your way again. Perhaps it lies mostly by the mainstage pit, perhaps it leads through secret forests, floating stages and two-story podia. All of that is fine. What matters most, after all, is that your way leads you to find yourself again. It leads to happiness. Now go forth, friends, and discover what waits for you behind the Gates.

TONIGHT, DREAMVILLE GATHERS

The weekend’s festivities begin tonight at your new home: DreamVille. There, the Gathering is set to show you what this weekend has in store! Many and more of you will spend this weekend’s nights at DreamVille, the enormous tent-cloth city of Tomorrowland. Bigger than the festival itself by one time and a half, in terms of surface area, it has over the past decade grown from 0 to tens

Don’t be fooled by your emptiness there’s so much room for happiness! Kaskade - Room for Happiness

Hello World For several years now, Tomorrowland has been a favourite festival holiday destination for people across the globe. Welcome, travelers!

On this day, 10 years ago...

Today, the call of the key has attracted people from all across the world. There was, obviously, no way to keep track of and personally welcome everyone, but not for lack of trying. The Global Journey programme offered a myriad of ways for those not from Belgium to reach De Schorre. Among them were high-speed Eurostar & Thalys trains from London, Paris and Cologne (Köln): an eco-friendly but sociable way to reach Tomorrowland. Those who took the train arrived at Brussels Zuid/Midi to a welcome in style at the especially reserved parking.

Of course, for those farther off, there were flights as well. From every corner of the Earth, they arrived at Zaventem airport, where the enormous stream of Tomorrowland traffic was assigned its own arrivals terminal. The opportunity of a one-day tour of Flanders, the northern part of Belgium, was also offered. For everyone who came from afar, be it by plane, train or otherwise, reservations were made at 25 hotels in Brussels alone. And as everyone at DreamVille will notice, international visitors aren’t a rare sight there either. Expressed like that, it sounds like an

onslaught of outsiders has taken over the originally Belgian Tomorrowland. That, however, is not true: 60% of tickets was reserved for Belgium, with special reservations for people from the villages surrounding De Schorre. It was the locals who first visited the festival ten years ago, it was the locals who allowed it to become what it is now, and it is the locals who now get to meet people from the strangest countries all around the globe. That, after all, is the point of making a Global Journey: to come together – to unite into a single Tomorrowland!

The first Tomorrowland giants were spotted casting their magical spells over De Schorre! See page 37 for more on the History of Tomorrow!

10 YEARS OF BEER Ever since the very beginning, 10 years ago, Tomorrowland has been supplied with beer by Belgian brewer Maes. In order to celebrate the anniversary, a limited edition set of beers was designed in collaboration with the festival’s creative team. Each can is filled with 33cl of Maes pilsener, and each is uniquely decorated with a drawing based on one of Tomorrowland’s 10 editions. For 15

tokens, you can lay your hands on a tray containing them all! At DreamVille, the Maes Limited Editions can be found at every bar; on the festival terrain, you’ll need to look closely, because only a few bars sell them. And for those who can’t get enough of these colourful cans, a special collector’s box can be won exclusively at maes.be.

BRIDGES FOR MUSIC

hAPPiness

Started by Valentino Barrioseta, former brand manager of a large Ibiza club, Bridges for Music is a charity set on spreading the success of dance music to those less fortunate. In the South African townships, they bring young local talents into contact with national stars as well as internationally acclaimed producers including Ritchie Hawtin, Skrillex and Noisia. By means of workshops and meetings, a bridge is laid from the stars of today to the youths of the slums, offering the latter a chance at musical succes. At Tomorrowland, two of Bridges for Music’s young protégés will perform, one every weekend. Hopefully, these gigs will be the start to a long and prosperous career!

If you haven’t already, make sure to install the official Tomorrowland app! It contains all the info you might need on the go – timetables, maps of the festival as well as DreamVille, artist info and more. Search for ‘Tomorrowland’ in the Play or App store and you’ll find it right away.

Medical Information

Got a headache? Or a hangover? Medical supplies are available at the pharmacy in the town near Tomorrowland: Boom Pharma, Antwerpsestraat 6, Boom. The pharmacy is opened on Friday from 9 – 12 am and 1.30 – 7 pm, and on Saturday from 9 – 12 am. If you need immediate medical attention, however, do not hesitate to go to the nearest First Aid point on DreamVille or Tomorrowland. And remember: always keep an eye out for your friends!

GATHERING CONTEST WINNER For the fourth year in a row, Studio Brussel has arranged a live broadcast from Tomorrowland. Apart from their studio at the Marketplace, they’ve also organized a contest to find new talent. Together with Poppunt they sought a talented artist to open the Gathering at Dreamville. It was a close call, but we would like to present this year’s winner: Ravenous!

Food for Thought’s tiny Tomorrowland visitors have returned, and in great number! Can you spot the one below? If you find it, send us a selfie with it at today@tomorrowland.com and earn eternal fame!

Be rebellious: love yourself

Are you thrilled to perform at Tomorrowland? “I’m very glad, of course. Like you said, we gave the judges a hard time deciding who would get the honour to open this year’s Tomorrowland. My buddy Major Maeyer also did a great job with his mixtape, so I didn’t expect to win the competition to be honest. I tried to participate last year but I didn’t make it, so I was already happy I made it through the first selection this year. Words can’t describe how happy I am!”

“A wise man once told me: ‘don’t read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.’ For years I have been fighting my battles to be that gorgeous woman with a perfect skin, the right weight, the shiny hair, only to finally realize: perfect is boring, human is beautiful. So now I’m a rebel with a cause! F*ck the system: I love myself the way I am!”

Studio Brussel created a jury consisting of their best radio DJs. After a few rounds they had two talented artists left, but only one of them could be the true winner. The final mission was to compress ten years of Tomorrowland into ten minutes of music. Ravenous turned out to be best at that, so go check him out at the Gathering!

City of Dreamers

A place to live, love, spend the night & get ready for the day, DreamVille is an important part of the festival to most of its visitors. It’s the peaceful campsite where everybody is your friend, your neighbour, your brother or sister. Your soulmate – or maybe even the love of your life. Whatever they are or will become during the next few days, they are at least as special as you are, so don’t be shy and introduce yourself to whoever looks interesting. It might feel and look like this campsite is permanently inhabited, but it certainly isn’t. The city of Dreamers is created year after year to provide for all your needs. Charge your phone, take a shower or model your hair and look extra cute today; it’s all possible. And again: don’t forget to shake your neighbour’s hand, you might meet the love of your life in this village of happiness.

LOVE TOMORROW As all of you, People of Tomorrow, know very well, the future begins today. It is our joint task to make sure Tomorrowland is kept pure and to preserve our lands for many years to come. What’s more, this is only the first weekend of madness, and the campers of weekend 2 would surely enjoy a clean & green DreamVille too. So if you produce any rubbish or see trash lying around, please dispose of it properly in one of the brightly-coloured FloweRbins. Your neighbours will surely thank you for keeping the paths clear. Don’t waste Tomorrow!

DREAMVILLE ON AIR 87.6 FM

Who’s with you when you wake up in the morning, and still by your side when you go to bed at night? Studio Brussel’s DreamVille Radio DJs, of course! Through speakers strewn all about the camping grounds, the young radio team’s laidback tunes, updates & news can be heard all

day. The show is broadcast live from the studio at the Marketplace, so drop by if you have anything to say! At night, DJ-sets are played to provide DreamVille with a little afterparty. Want to hear closer? Turn on your boombox or your smartphone and tune in to 87.6 FM.

CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST The bakery is your best friend. Even with the worst possible hangover, these men and women will provide you with tasty fresh jus d’orange and a baguette straight from the oven. Want to find out where to find these delicacies? Follow the smell of freshly baked bread or see ‘Marketplace’ on the DreamVille map!

DOWN ‘N DIRTY Tomorrowland is by far the best place to get down ‘n dirty, but there are limits. Of course, there are showers to wash off the grime. Before 8 am and from 3 to 5 pm, the real early birds & hungover cats can get squeaky clean for only one token. If you awake during peak hours and hit the showers between 8 and 3, you’ll have to pay one and a half tokens.

DIRTY DREAMVILLE:

1. Your tent is your home and bedroom. It’s where the magic happens. Make sure it’s sturdy, roomy and well-ventilated (you will regret closing all those flaps in the morning…). And don’t forget to fasten your pegs & lines: you don’t want to have the thing collapse on your first move!

At DreamVille, people don’t just dream – they make love as well. In questionnaires, half of all festival goers admit to having done the dirty in their tents at least once. When it comes down to it, it’s a good idea to have the logistics all arranged beforehand. That way, you only have to focus on what matters when the grand moment comes.

2. Privacy would be nice, but to create it at a festival all about togetherness, you need a little smartness. Keep your nosy group of friends at a distance, and sneak off to your tent with your lover while they’re having an afterparty.

LOVE LOGISTICS

3. Sharing your tent with a Platonic friend? Don’t be rude and find them a place to sleep first! Perhaps your new romantic conquest has a friend in dire need of someone to warm their bed, too… 4. Once the action gets started, wearing a condom is a must. Besure to always keep a couple on your person. In case you ran out or forgot the rubber buggers, new ones are available

at the camping stores. Play it safe! 5. When taking each other to the noisier sexual highs, you don’t want everyone to listen along. Make sure you have a radio or smartphone speakers ready, and put on some groovy tunes for them to hear instead! 6. Never mind all that lovin’, you need to get some sleep as well! Buy a pair of earplugs so that you can, when needed, block out others’ adventurous nightly sounds. Your body will thank you for letting it recuperate – and tomorrow, you’ll be able to woo someone new. 7. If you’re thinking of leaving some lights on for a romantic atmosphere – don’t. (Unless you have a bit of an exhibitionistic streak.) The shadowplay on the side of your tent will allow everyone around to see exactly what you’re doing, and you’ll be the main act for the night! CAMPING STORE:

TENTS, BEDS & MORE

MEAT MARKET

If on Sunday, you crave a fresh piece of beef to throw onto the barbie, or if you’re just up for a fancy meaty breakfast, not to worry! This year’s new addition to the Marketplace, a fully-fledged butcher’s shop, marks another step towards homemade haute cuisine at DreamVille. From juicy cuts that can be shared by many to thinly sliced hams and fatty breakfast sausages, the butcher caters to all appetites.

For years, DreamVille has had its own shop, catering to every forgetful camper’s needs. No need for sleeping on the ground or borrowing your neighbour’s toothbrush! We asked store owner Pierre to explain how he does it. “We sell everything a festival guest might need for a comfortable stay,” he says, “from tents and sleeping bags to plates and cutlery. If necessary, we even help to set up tents from time to time – we are the specialists, after all!” So what is the trick to setting your tent poles straight? “Use the pegs that came with your tent and drive them into the ground at an angle. Guy ropes should be strung tightly to protect against the wind.” Even though his stores carry diverse merchandise, there are requests even Pierre can’t fulfill. “We were once asked for Viagra, and another time someone wanted a heater for their tent. Unfortunately, we couldn’t provide either, haha!” For all else, drop by one of Pierre’s stores between 8am and one hour after the festival’s closing time.

KEEP IT TOGETHER

Your tent’s set mostly straight, you’ve unpacked your party pants and gotten to know your most jovial neighbours. It’s almost time for The Gathering, where you’ll get to show off your long-practiced dance moves. In order to bring the ordeal to a favourable conclusion, here’s our don’t-forget-to-take-these-things-to-the-party list!

A FEAST FOR CAMPERS

Friends, sun, camping, music, all of these call for one thing: a barbecue! Grab your steaks, drinks and neighbours and try your grill skills at one of the 10 designated barbecue areas. BBQs are provided there. If you’re not that much of a grill master yourself, drop by the Grillzone lounge and have your meat prepared for you. And if anyone’s looking hungry, remember, sharing is caring!

1. Your friends. Who or what they are doesn’t matter. Bring along anyone and anything that looks companionable.

2. Your poncho. Useful for those notoriously sneaky Belgian downpours as well as sudden beer showers.

3. Proof of identity. Nothing bad is going to happen, the lovely ladies & gentlemen of security just want to get to know you a little better.

4. Sunscreen & sunglasses. The sun always shines at Tomorrowland, and don’t let anyone recommending ponchos tell you otherwise!

5. Your Tomorrowland bracelet. Not just for entrance to the festival, but also for all those friend requests you’re going to get!

Arne Quinze:

the mind behind the bridge Belgian conceptual artist Arne Quinze came up with an enormous symbol to emphasize the togetherness that is arguably the greatest merit of ten years of Tomorrowland. A bridge over five hundred metres long, made by and for everyone, leading to freedom, leading to tomorrow. The project is a call for fraternization and stands for the way Tomorrowland brings people together. Arne, throughout the your career as a conceptual artist you’ve made a variety of spatial installations. What keeps you going? What’s your goal?

“The starting point is always my dream that cities are actually open air museums. Art is far too often deemed something exclusively for the elite and gets literally locked away behind the walls of a museum. Only 1 to 2 percent of the people actually get in touch with art and culture, but these are two of the most important cornerstones of our society. I aim to get people in touch with each other by placing my installations in the public domain, right there where the people are.”

One World – The world is brought together in an art installation that features over 210,000 participants and artists of more than 150 different countries Support a Better World – a large amount of the profit will be donated to the Human Rights Watch Organization

What’s the basic idea behind People of Tomorrow?

“People of Tomorrow is a mindset that we introduce and model with this very first project called ‘One World’ by the People of Tomorrow. People of Tomorrow is a widespread platform of likeminded people, people who feel the need to express themselves and who feel that the power of free thinking and creating are the greatest goods on this planet of ours. One World is the very first step we took in order to get there.”

Guinness World Record – with 210,000 unique messages we now hold the Guinness world record for the biggest art collaboration ever

How would you describe ‘One World’?

What does the statue in the middle of the installation stand for?

“One World by the People of Tomorrow is a special installation that will have its permanent place in De Schorre – Tomorrowland’s home ground. The installation is shaped like an immense bridge, which is, of course, the ultimate symbol to express the connection between people. It’s a bridge that gives different people with different ideas the chance to reach out to one another and actually get them together. The exterior of the bridge is made out of wood, so anybody can carve their message into it, like a massive oversized canvas. There’s room for about 210,000 messages. Those little engravings can be either words, drawings or any kind of expression anyone can think of, as long as they embody a positive form of creativity. Meaning: there’s no room for commercial or political messages. The way we see it One World is one gigantic wooden beam wherein everyone can carve his or her name. Many years and many memories later those messages will still be there.”

“The statue is inspired by the Nikè of Samotrachè, a monument from Greek antiquity that symbolizes the victory of freedom. My contemporary interpretation of that statue is the centerpiece of One World. The bridge will unite all kinds of people from all over the world and it will show them that in the end, we are all equal. The bridge leads us to freedom, the greatest good we humans have.” How extensive is this project?

“Bearing in mind that the actual bridge is 537 metres long and the central statue is 25 metres high, you can probably already imagine that this is quite the enterprise and that it involves a cooperation between many, many people from all over the world. Needless to say, it is our hope that just as many people will take the leap with us into our One World.”

Severine’s winning creation

WE ARE LIFE-LONG WINNERS Every year the People of Tomorrow are given the chance to win Madness for Life passes. This year’s challenge was to design the most original message for the One World bridge. A lot of creative designs were sent in, but Severine Bogenschütz and her friends are the one and only winners! Congrats, Severine! How did you manage to win the tickets?

How did you react when you heard you won the competition?

“At the beginning the only thing I knew was it should be something new, not just a line full of words... You have no idea how many evenings I was awake in my bed and thought what I could do to made this a success. Every day I collected new ideas from the Internet, my friends and my family. Finally my own idea came to me when I sat in the bathtub. I had nothing in mind and suddenly it was there!”

“I came home at lunchtime and I remembered about the contest, so I was checking my phone and saw my picture on the official page. I don’t know how to describe my feelings at that moment! After a few seconds of thinking about what happened I was shouting so damn loud! The first thing I had to do was to call my boyfriend but I could hardly speak so I immediately drove to his house. When I turned into the street my friends were outside and shouting and dancing all over the street. I felt like I had a state reception.”

Was it just a creative wave that made you do this or a serious attempt to win?

“I think it’s a bit of both sides. Of course I wanted to win these tickets! I tried it in 2011, 2012 and 2013 without any success. I think I only wanted to get all thoughts and feelings from the people together, the family feeling.”

Can you imagine yourself visiting until you're old and walking with a frame?

“The first thing my best friend said to me when she heard about the "For Life" tickets: “This is so great! We’ll still go when we are old and need walking frames and nurses who take us around the whole festival. So again, yes! I will visit Tomorrowland ‘till I am old and grey.”

THURSDAY

JULY 17TH 2014

10 YEARS OF TOGETHERNESS Ten years... it’s just flown by. Got lots to talk about over the 2 weekends so to take you back... I joined the Tomorrowland family in 2007 as I was booked for Rock It in Holland on the Saturday when it started back in 2005. Right from the beginning the Belgian crowd was incredible. I vividly remember my first time. It was terribly muddy backstage, but the terrain was completely free of mud. I knew right then that this was a special production. The food too, stoofvlees & friet! Above & Beyond, Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, we were all in a tent back then. Not anymore of course, those guys can sell out stadiums. I also remember once we had a minor problem with sound for the first time, I had graduated to the main stage as the host by then and Axwell was on. The sound went down, but within a few seconds was immediately back on. No panic, shit happens. Checked with the sound boys, all good Stretch, thumbs up, so I nipped off to grab some dinner. But instead of getting the shuttle back I thought I would take a wander around the site. After about 15 minutes I thought I would pop in to one of the areas on the way back. To my horror, Axwell is standing backstage having a beer. I was like ‘geeza, WTF’ he says to me ‘Stretch the sound went down 7 more times...’ Well, I sprinted as fast as I could, in complete panic, and found to my great relief our very own Dave Lambert in full control, crowd going nuts, no worries. Phew. Another image I will never forget is just before Martin Solveig was due to go on the mainstage, 2009, the crowd on the hill behind the dancefloor were all dancing in formation, literally thousands of people all together. Solveig was like ‘wow, never seen anything like it’ This year we take you to another level, spiritually. Enjoy the experience! Welcome to Tomorrowland People!

Tweet me for shout outs early in the day @stretchmc

Over the past decade, the possibilities of social media have grown in pace with Tomorrowland. We’ve come a long way since the old days. All we could do then was post crude, pixelated pictures, taken with unwieldy digital cameras, on forums & newsgroups in the back corners of the Internet. These days, however, people are more connected than ever by the social media powerhouse called ‘smartphone’ in their pockets; photos are instantly tagged, shared and spread across the world. Digital channels have played a crucial role in the flow of Tomorrowland’s magic around the globe, as fans connect from Alaska to Australia and are ultimately brought together in Boom. For the 10th anniversary, a number of new ways to get together have been introduced. Firstly, not only will the festival be

broadcast live on Youtube again; a partnership with MTV has also been struck. Twice, they will create a one-hour MTW World Stage broadcast. Besides, a documentary about the past 10 years of Tomorrowland will be shot and premiered in August. Remember to tell your family & not-sodance-minded friends about all this; they’ll finally get to see what your passion is about! Of course, the way the People of Tomorrow have gathered over the past 10 years could not be left uncelebrated. The bracelet around your wrist is the ultimate testament to the way Tomorrowland brings people together: one touch, and you and your new friend may remain in contact forever. Go out, use it, and lay the base for another 10 years of togetherness.

Solveig PLAYS YOUR SOUND

Martin Solveig always tries to do something extra for his fanbase. Sometimes he simply gives away tickets to an event at which he’ll perform, but not for Tomorrowland. He assumed that just regular tickets would be dull for this festival, so he set up a rookie producers’ contest. The commission was a 30 seconds demo, which the rookies could send to a special e-mail address. From the demos sent in before the 11th of July, Martin picked three finalists of whom one will be the winner. Martin Solveig has promised to play the best contribution during his performance at Tomorrowland, so don’t miss it!

TomorrowWorld

Taking Tomorrow on the road Over the past decade, Tomorrowland was able to get music lovers from all over the world come to De Schorre, Boom. Last year, however, these people also had a North-American place to visit. What could bring thousands of people to the evergreen fields of Chattahoochee Hills for a five-day period? What was the conductive force behind the massive congregation of men and women that entered an entirely new fairytale festival based around dance music across the big pond, many miles away from De Schorre? In 2013 Tomorrowland started its enormous undertaking in Georgia, USA. TomorrowWorld was born, and the rest is history.

THURSDAY In a matter of seconds 180,000 Tomorrowland 2013 tickets were sold, whereas two million other fans sadly had to bite the dust. The incredible demand led the magic music festival to launch its inaugural international spinoff: TomorrowWorld in Atlanta, Georgia. In other words, borders were broken to bring that unique brand of happiness closer to you. It was impossible to be sufficiently prepared for the abundance of great music and positive feelings that flew over the Chattahoochee Hills last summer. TomorrowWorld featured a three day fiesta of musical mayhem and mystical momentum. The line-up boasted international stars including Sebastian Ingrosso, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, alongside big shots such as David Guetta, Hardwell and Calvin

Tomorrowland was founded by Manu and Michiel Beers, Belgian brothers who describe it as ‘more exciting than anything we ever dreamed of when we started years ago as young music lovers and entrepreneurs.’ “When the two brothers started the festival, they started it because they love where they’re from, they love their hometown, and they just love music,” Epstein explains. “Truthfully it started as a little festival and it just literally grew and grew and grew. And the reason why it’s become what it has become is just because the Beers brothers never lost sight of that. The American adventure proved to be quite successful.” As you are probably aware, both Tomorrow-festivals are not just about the music. “This thing is more than a festival, it’s an experience,” Epstein continues. “The best way I

Harris. With all of these musical masters in attendace, thousands of people travelled to the 2,000-acre Bouckaert Farm, located in the Chattahoochee Hills about 20 minutes west of Atlanta. The organizers scoured more than a hundred sites before deciding on Bouckaert Farm. The choice was due to its similar natural setting to the landscape of De Schorre in Belgium, where Tomorrowland takes place. “Before we announced it was coming to the U.S., people thought it was coming to Brazil, they thought it was coming to Mexico,” Justin Epstein, spokesperson for TomorrowWorld says. “It’s almost like winning the Olympics of house music. It’s like winning the World Cup or the Olympics for your city.” Atlanta welcomed and hosted about 130,000 fans for the three-day festival that was held in September of last year.

could explain it is Burning Man with Cirque du Soleil. It’s so theatrical and over the top, like magical.” And it was a huge deal that it was able to be hosted in Atlanta. “Right now, Atlanta is such a cultural melting pot. It’s amazing who comes here. And TomorrowWorld made the whole thing explode even further – it was a great honor and opportunity for our city. But then again, it would be for any city or any place.” Last year’s edition of Tomorrowland was an even bigger success than the year before – but nearly two months after, TomorrowWorld set a new standard when the festival passed through the Chattahoochee Hills. It became the very first overseas Tomorrowland experience and even all the way across the Atlantic, that little thing the organizers call ‘Belgian chemistry and magic’ stuck like glue. TomorrowWorld – just like every edition of Tomorrowland – became a weekend to never ever forget.

Taste of Tomorrow

HAPPINESS IS HOME-MADE

Dancing all night and day costs a lot of energy. You can’t jump up and down on beer or soda alone. No, you can’t. Don’t worry, ‘cause Tomorrowland has not only put together a musical fairytale, but also a magical lineup for your stomach. Here are a few of the many highlights that are brewing, cooking and steaming in the home kitchens of Tomorrowland.

Welcome to chocolate heaven

Another example of the refined Belgian cuisine is undoubtedly their excellent chocolate. Chocolatier Barry Callebaut has put his skills to the test and made some special chocolate surprises solely for Tomorrowland.

Belgian strawberries

All the way from Korea

If you crave some outstanding oriental food, Tomorrowland has got you covered. There’s an exquisite selection of the best Korean specialties, like noodles in the most exotic flavors. With sticks for the experts, or a fork if you’re new to this.

The city of Hoogstraten is famous for its delicious strawberries. Just for Tomorrowland, they’ve grown a new sort of sweet, juicy red jewels. You can top them off with some chocolate or homemade whipped cream to give them a little more ‘oomph’. Or not, they’re yummy anyway.

International Street Take a walk down International Street at DreamVille, and be welcomed by mouthwatering menus from all around the world. There’s German food, Mexican, Spanish, Asian, Greek. From dusk ‘till dawn you’re welcome to try food you may never have heard of before, or which reminds you of home.

Keeping it simple

Belgian beef

Not a big connoisseur of haute cuisine? Don’t worry. Just order fried chicken with applesauce and fries. Just like grandma makes them, with love and expertise.

At the Belgian Steak House, able chefs will prepare a premium quality, authentic Belgian steak for your culinary pleasure. Served with freshly made fries on the side, three luscious dips and a glass of wine or Grimbergen draught you’re sure to be spoiled all the way.

Gault&Millau

Gault&Millau publishes culinary guides, and have quite the reputation when it comes to reviewing restaurants, chefs and really anything that has something to do with food. Last year they sent a couple of anonymous reviewers to Tomorrowland to judge the food at the festival. They gave the food a 7.3 out of 10, a great score considering it’s not a restaurant but a busy festival! They literally tasted everything edible on the immense terrain and peeled it apart, sniffed it, tasted it, felt it and wrote a lengthy piece about it. These guys know their food as well as you know your favourite piece of music. Which probably is down to the very last kick, snare and hi-hat. During this special edition of

22 TOMORROWLAND TODAY 2014

DE SCHORRE BOOM BELGIUM

Tomorrowland Gault&Millau are giving four young and eager chefs the chance to prove themselves to a very diverse and international crowd. Out of 100 submissions they choose the 4 best ideas how to ‘remix’ a Belgian classic, giving it that special magic suited for Tomorrowland. Only 3 times a day, 32 people at a time, these (Michelin) stars-to-be share their very own take on culturally important menus, hoping that they can convince you to move to Belgium. Well, may be that’s a bit too much. Lets just say they’re the next generation to know what great food means, and they’re here to convince you of that. All under the watchful eye (and tongue) of the experienced people of Gault&Millau.

THURSDAY

JULY 17TH 2014

Topchefs Music may be the most important thing on Tomorrowland, but great food is almost as important. This year some of the most renowned chefs to walk the planet return to the festival to indulge us in nutritious and tasty food. One of them is Roger van Damme. Chef at ‘Het Gebaar’ in Antwerp and awarded with a Michelin star. He has refined his craft at the world-famous restaurant El Bulli in Spain. Another culinary star at Tomorrowland is Wouter Bru, owner of restaurant ‘Chez Bru’ at Eygalieres and two Michelin stars. He was a judge at the Flemish version of Masterchef and Masterchef Junior. From Sicily comes Peppe Giacomazza. He practically grew up in the kitchen, as his

father Vincenzo worked as a chef in Belgium. Exactly 30 years ago Vincenzo openend ‘La Bottle’ in Genk. Nowadays, with the combined effort and knowledge of Pepe, Vincenzo and brother Gaspare, it’s been hailed as the best Italian restaurant in 2008 by Gault&Millau. The family Giacomazza focuses on the Sicilian kitchen, with some international influences. Everything is tasted in advanced by Peppe’s wife Inez. We conclude with Peter de Clercq. He’s the champion of the world at barbecuing. However, he does much more than just grill. Chef at restaurant Elckerlijc, he serves fruit, vegetables, meat, herbs, chicken and lambs he grew and raised himself.

Have some vitamins

Anytime is waffle time

After raging your ass off at your favorite artist, you might feel a bit feeble. If so, go get a heavenly smoothie or a refreshing piece of fruit. Let the vitamins flow through you! You’ll be ready to rave again in no time.

When in Belgium, a tasty waffle is mandatory. Take the time to discover the full, rich flavour of the best waffles out of Brussels and Luik. For breakfast, for lunch, for diner and in between. Like we said, anytime is waffle time.

No meat, no gluten Lombardia, one of Antwerp’s finest restaurants, has long been on the forefront of the vegetarian cuisine. Next to the healthiest menu you’ve ever seen, guests can send in their allergies or special diets on forehand, at healthy@tomorrowland.com. Mention when you’ll be coming over, and Lombardia sees to it your personal meal is waiting for you!

Famous fries

Moochie’s Frozen Yoghurt

Swa and Marieke are local legends when it comes to the very best fries. They pick only the highest quality potatoes and serve their distinctive meat stew alongside. A must for every adventurous eater, especially those from abroad.

Ice cream re-invented. At Moochie’s, you can pick your very own favorite flavour and garnish it with whatever you like. It’s kind of like a popsicle, only way better.

B-EAT At B-EAT, music meets food. It’s an experience for all the senses, as one headline DJ and one famous chef combine their respective fields of expertise to serve brilliant food and great music together. Every day there are 3 sessions of 1 hour, each welcoming 50 guests that have booked a seat in advance. The chemistry between the chef and the musician will be translated to the ears and stomachs of the lucky few who’ve conquered a spot. From Gazpacho of red fruit, paprika, vanilla oil and ice to a tasty hand cut tartar of the best beef or Carpaccio with goat cheese cremeux. A clear

bouillon of shrimp with a light foam of shellfish. Omberfish with a pistou of tomato, crumble of black olives and mayo made with saffron. Strawberries from Hoogstraat, mixed with yoghurt of basil and a mousse of the same juicy strawberries. Or, what to think of vanilla ice cream with chocolate garnishing, or a shot of tequila with a ganache of lime with sea salt and prime quality of booze? Every single dish will be served with the utmost care and a touch of love, complimented by music that’s tailor made for the occasion. Excellent gastronomy has never sounded so good before.

PORTABLE JUice: charge your SMARTPHONE WHILE YOU’RE DANCING A phone out of charge is like a stage with no music: useless. Although we advise against checking your smartphone all day, we don’t want to keep you from calling your parents to tell them how much fun

you’re having. And for that, you need juice. At the PLUGGO charging points, you can get a portable charger for 2 tokens + 5 tokens deposit. That means that for 7 tokens, you recieve a charger that fits

into your pocket. You can exchange it for a fresh one as often as you want. At the end of the weekend, you could turn it in and get 5 tokens back – but you can also keep it, take it home and show mom and

dad the nifty device with which you called! PLUGGO can be found at DreamVille info points and at the large info stand on the festival terrain – look for the lightning bolt on your map.

Making MUSICAL MEMORIES Over the last ten years, Tomorrowland has shaped the memories of thousands of people. To honour this special legacy, a unique CD will be released this summer, called Musical Memories. The unique thing about it? It will be compiled by the People of Tomorrow themselves!

All you need to do to create the ultimate compilation is to share your five favourite tunes of the last decade. Apart from the honour to help create this compilation, you get a chance to win a once in a lifetime meet & greet with your best-loved DJ at Tomorrowland. Or maybe you are one of the ten lucky birds who win an exclusive limited edition CD box. For more info, go to voting.tomorrowland.com.

COCKTAILS BY SMIRNOFF This year Smirnoff is partnering with Tomorrowland to spice up the party with their official Tomorrowland cocktails! Especially created for the festival’s 10th anniversary, they represent the magic of Tomorrow in liquid form. The cocktails are made using fresh local produce by Smirnoff ’s skilled mixologists, who will happily advise you and your friends on which one to enjoy best.

FESTIVAL

For those unlucky enough not to get a hold of a Tomorrowland ticket, flowery Floor offered another chance! Founded by VLAM, the lifestyle platform revolves around the happiness that flowers & plants can bring. Over the past few weeks, Floor offered the chance for 6 couples, be they lovers or just friends, to win a Day Pass to Tomorrowland. All it took to win was a good tale of love and friendship between them. Each of the winning Flower Couples will be welcomed by Floor with a ceremony at their Wall of Love. You’ll be able to find the winners in TML Today daily – and if you fancy having your own flower ceremony, look foor Floor’s stand on the festival terrain. Alternatively, check out www.floor.be for more info.

To kickstart your Tomorrowland journey in style, here’s on of their tastiest suggestions, called the Smirnoff Sunrise. We start with 30ml of Smirnoff no. 21 and 120ml of pineapple juice, served long over ice. The mix is finished by gently adding a dash of grenadine juice to recreate the ultimate summer sunset: a tasty, refreshing way to begin the weekend! Don’t forget, however: whatever you do, drink responsibly and always look out for your friends, so that you can continue to enjoy Tomorrow together.

We love our

neighbours Celebrating your birthday with David Guetta playing in the background, watching Armin’s helicopter land in your backyard, being the first to know what the mainstage looks like. These are the things that happen to the neighbours of De Schorre. Whereas the rest of the world travels far and wide to witness three days of Tomorrow, they get to see everything from the first scaffolding pole to be erected to the last tent to be torn down.

These are the people who allow us to celebrate Tomorrow in their back yard each year – and since a good neighbour is worth more than a far friend, please be considerate of them. Keep the streats clean & the noise down, and strike up a friendly conversation with a local or two!

Wim Peeters

Hans Everaert

Erwin van Hoeck

You’ve been living here for three years; is that especially for Tomorrowland? “My friends asked me the same thing at the time. I have to admit I’m a huge fan, but you’re not going to build a house just for that, of course (laughs). De Schorre is just a very comfortable place to live and I visit it daily with my children. My kids will jump on our trampoline to pumping dance music, convered in flags, and shout ‘Daddy, we’re playing Tomorrowland!’”

You’re a loyal visitor of the festival? “Indeed! We’ve been visiting Tomorrowland every year, from the first edition on. And no, we didn’t come to live here because of it (laughs). For 8 years now, a whole club of friends from Antwerpen has been coming to stay with us for three days, a kind of mini-indoor-DreamVille. We have the advantage of being able to get into Tomorrowland’s back entrance, and can pop back out for a backyard barbecue whenever we want. And yes, I do need a week to regain my strength afterwards.”

Who was here first, you or the festival? “We’ve lived here since 1996, so we were here first. We’ve really seen it grow and its entourage has become many times bigger. The best I think they’ve done is the neighbourhood surveys: what happened, what can we improve? This year, for example, security will be given small electric cars to reduce noisy inconvenience to the neighbourhood.”

Lives practically inside the festival; his garden borders on the terrain

Do you experience the festival differently as a neighbour? “Yes, we do. We live on the edge of the terrain, so we have our own Tomorrowland party on our terrace. Our friends join us and we begin at twelve with a brunch, have a glass of champagne and go to Tomorrowland as a group. As you’ll surely understand, we return to our own little party after the festival’s last fireworks.”

Lives right behind the entrance to DreamVille

What’s your most special memory? “That must be last year’s Saturday when the storm broke loose. It was raining and gusting like no tomorrow, but everyone remained calm. I won’t soon forget the way that fearsome moment was handled so calmly with so many people.”

Lives half a kilometre from the festival and 5m from Dreamville

You are going to take a peek inside for the first time this year, correct? “Yes, that’s right. We’ve had a gander at the festival’s construction before and I liked that a lot. Also, during our street’s communal barbecue, we got to enjoy David Guetta’s music, who can boast about that? This year, we’ll join another local couple on the festival terrain and behold the public in all its luster. The kids have just moved out and it’s my birthday as well, so it’s a double celebration (laughs)!”

“This music cannot exist without the emotional resonance of everybody who’s there and who’s hearing it.”

‘Hymn’ Hans Zimmer’s magical journey None other than the prestigious German composer Hans Zimmer wrote the anthem for Tomorrowland 2014. This year’s soundtrack is called ‘Hymn’ and is an ode to the festival’s 10th anniversary. “Tomorrowland is a known quantity to me and after ten years I think they deserve something special for their anniversary.”

The 10 minute-long composition will take you on a journey combining the mythical qualities, magical atmosphere and international character of Tomorrowland. “You can have all these cultures together and colliding in a firework of emotions and celebrating,” Zimmer says. He did not receive an academic education. Zimmer took piano lessons, but after a couple lessons his teacher (!) gave up. He was, after all, working on the improvisation of his own compositions more than he was studying. At school, too, he preferred his compositions over coursework. Zimmer’s career got started properly thanks to his participation in ‘Buggles’. Their hit song Video Killed the Radio Star was, ironically, the first clip to be shown on MTV. Those not from the 90’s will undoubtedly recognize Hans from compositions for games such as Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed, and he is most famous for his film scores, which include Pirates of the Caribbean and the twice-Grammied anthem for The Lion

King. For a long time now, he’s owned his own studio, among the employees of which is Junkie XL of A Little Less Conversation fame – for the past five years, Junkie has turned his production skills to composing scores. He worked with Zimmer on the Tomorrowland project too, and the song they made is called Hymn. All across the world, hymns are understood to be songs of very high praise: spiritual as well as worldly experiences that the young and old may share, even across different cultures and parts of the world. “It should be culturally diverse and should somehow represent the whole world. The hymn is about bringing different cultures together. All the things that make us different are actually the things we should be celebrating,” Hans elaborates. He truly is one of the People of Tomorrow, and he has made Tomorrowland a masterful creation of culture and diversity.

DIMITRI VEGAS & LIKE MIKE FOCUS ON MAGICAL FRIDAY Mainstage 22:30 - 23:30

saw us playing at one of the smaller stages. Back then, we already did remixes for Swedish House Mafia, among others. While we were making a name for ourselves abroad, not many people knew us in Belgium. Michiel Beers proposed to take over our management. The year after, we made our first Tomorrowland anthem. Ever since then it has been a rollercoaster. Every day it’s another adventure, a dream we hope never to wake up from.”

Few artists are so intimately entwined with the world of Tomorrowland as Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. Over the last years, the two brothers have become one of the most wanted acts. Smashing the house is just one familiar way to describe their almost scientific way of turning a crowd upside down. As for the music, they’ve cranked up their productivity lately, releasing hits such as ‘Tremor’ (ft. Martin Garrix) and ‘Eparrei’ (ft. Fatboy Slim & Diplo). And they’re far from being done yet!

Anything special in store for this 10th edition? “Next to playing on DreamVille on Thursday, and hosting our own stage on Sunday, we’re playing together with Steve Aoki as the new super-act ‘3 Are Legend’. Our dear friends Wolfpack will close our stage on Sunday, as we’re heading over to Amnesia. It goes without saying that we’ve got a lot of new material to drop at Tomorrowland. We’re also definitely going to play ‘Eparrei’, a track we made together with Diplo and Fatboy Slim. It was used by Belgian national television and radio during the World Championships, which makes it that much more special.”

As difficult as it may be to describe a special feeling, what do you think is the magic of Tomorrowland? “We simply can’t imagine a summer without Tomorrowland anymore. It’s such a special event. The whole world descends on Boom, on Belgium. For many, it’s not just a festival, but an entire holiday. From the decoration of the stages to the music played, Tomorrowland offers a truly unique experience to artists and visitors alike. This year we’ll be playing on DreamVille once again, but also on the festival itself of course. On Sunday we’ll be heading to Ibiza, where we’re residents at Amnesia.”

”Every day is an adventure!”

What’s your view on Tomorrowland picking up talents? “They do a really good job. We mean, look at us! If you look at the overall line-up, you’ll see that there are a lot of stages full of fresh talent. And don’t forget the DJ contest that’s held every year by Studio Brussel and Poppunt.”

What do you mean by ‘experience’? “Take the mainstage for instance. No doubt it’s the most beautiful stage worldwide, every year again. Every little detail has carefully been thought out. Standing there as an artist is just an incredible view. A sea of colourful, pumped up, beautiful people raging away in the intimate setting of the valley. Combine that with a brilliant sound system, all the lights and fireworks. That’s just pure magic.”

Where will we be seeing you dance at Tomorrowland, after or before you’ve got to perform yourself? “One of the things we’re definitely going to check out are our friends of Wolfpack. They’ve got a ton of new material that they’ll be playing for the first time. On our shortlist there’s Steve Aoki of course, and Martin Garrix. Last but certainly not least there’s Hardwell and Tiësto playing side by side, which is already a special thing beforehand.”

How deep does the connection between you guys and Tomorrowland run? “This is where it all started for us. Years ago, the guys from Tomorrowland

YVES V FOCUS ON INCREDIBLE SATURDAY V Sessions vs. Doorn 22:30 - 00:00

Over the years Tomorrowland has rapidly grown to a worldwide hype like no dance event ever did before. Some artists were already part of it when Tomorrowland was still in its infancy. One of them is Yves V, who’s been part of the craziness for eight years now. He just finished a three-week tour and was still recovering when we got to him, but he put himself together for a word about this great weekend. What keeps you busy at the moment? “I’ve got all different kinds of activities which keep me from getting bored to be honest. I’m preparing for Tomorrowland of course, but in the previous three weeks I toured through Asia. I also performed in Brazil, Tel Aviv and so on. No reason to stand still!”

It seems that that ‘evolution’ not only influences Tomorrowland, but also the scene in its entirety. Do you agree? “Yes, I surely do! I think Belgium had a major impact on distributing dance music to all corners of the world. Like I said, I just came back from Asia and you can really feel their lack of experience compared to our country. They don’t want to hear house music, they want to hear Tomorrowland music. So Tomorrowland undoubtedly helps to become acquainted with our music. Dance music is totally new to them, you can tell by their reaction on your performance. The Netherlands and Belgium have a long history in dance music, and I really think that Tomorrowland helps to spread that knowledge. People from all over the world watch their aftermovies. Many of them have never seen anything like it. If Tomorrowland is the first thing you get to see, I’m sure you have a good picture of what a dance festival is like. If that doesn’t make you crave for more you’re probably not made for dance music. I’ve also never heard people saying they don’t know Tomorrowland. Everybody knows Tomorrowland. It’s like the perfect business card for our music.”

“People don’t ask for dance music nowadays, they just want Tomorrowland music.”

You performed at Tomorrowland before it became phenomenal, but the festival outgrew itself – and Belgium – to become an established and well-respected event. How do you feel about Tomorrowland nowadays? “I’m really proud to see what happened to Tomorrowland. During the years I performed as one of Tomorrowland’s residents I’ve seen a lot of changes. Especially when it exploded worldwide and they managed to create that urging ‘we need to be a part of it’ feeling. At my first Tomorrowland we had some people from Antwerpen, Gent and other Belgian cities. I hadn’t been producing for such a long time so I was already pretty excited to perform on such a major national event. Look at us now. Nowadays you really feel that the whole world is watching your set at the mainstage and everybody tends to expect the best. The people that made it to the festival are obviously honoured, proud and extremely happy to be a part of this mayhem. Tomorrowland is like the World Disney for grown-ups! There are so many beautiful festivals, but none of them manages to dominate at every single detail like they do. I really respect that and I’m proud to have helped create this evolution.”

What would you advise the visitors of Tomorrowland for this weekend? “It would be nice if you’d come and join us at my performance, but the best advice I can give: don’t forget to look around. You know how often I watched the aftermovie and thought ‘Huh, didn’t see that at the festival itself!’ Recreation area De Schorre has so much to offer, especially when it is decorated for Tomorrowland. Have a great time!” Yves will be playing with Sander van Doorn ‘till 23:00, and solo ‘till midnight.

our music with a purpose. Every lyric is thought about, hoping to make an impact on the listener’s mind, to help them through the dark times they may be in. Music speaks louder than normal conversations to most people. If you’re blessed with a voice through music, it’s almost your duty to seize that opportunity.”

Krewella is taking the world by storm. Yasmine, Jahan and Rain Man mix booming electro, beautiful vocals and a fresh and tireless onstage energy into an act we’ve seldom seen before. They’ve quickly gathered a huge following amongst the newest generation of ravers worldwide. Not only are their tracks perfect to rage to, they always have some deeper meaning as well. With this combination of great music and meaningful messages they’ve captured the hearts and souls of many.

Krewella is also known for mixing up genres and making something unique out of them. How do they keep their own sound amidst all those different influences? “The fact that we write all of our own music keeps everything consistent, no matter what subgenre of electronic music we’re delving into. We take inspiration from all of the new musical ideas that we love, but always keep the musical background we came from in mind.” One good example of them crossing musical borders is the collaboration they did with hardstyle legend Headhunterz, called ‘United Kids of the World’. “We’ve always loved hardstyle. In fact, our very first big show was opening for Headhunterz in 2011. Over time we became friends with Willem and he started sending us tracks. The beat for UKOTW stood out for us. It was melodic, emotional and energetic.” The track became a protest against (online) bullying, with the sort of lyrics Krewella is known for.

“If you’re blessed with a voice through music, it’s almost your duty to seize that opportunity.”

At the moment this interview takes place, Krewella’s heading over to Ibiza for the first time. It’s another big step for them but on the other hand, taking big steps may well be all they do lately. How do you keep it fun, being on the road together, all the time? “Honestly, we have a good amount of alone time while we’re traveling. We have a team we travel with made up out of people we all hold very dear and who keep us entertained all the time. We all have a mutual understanding that tensions can get high on the road, but at the end we’re all in the same boat.”

Being together all the time requires a strong friendship. “We (Jahan and Yasmine) are sisters. It helps us keep each other in check. We’re not afraid to speak our mind on what we think of the music, DJing, branding, the works. It helps keep a very ‘open door policy’ in the creative process. There’s nothing more rewarding than sharing your dream with a family member. Just like Rain Man is, really. We met eight years ago at high school and started making music as an after school hobby. After a few years, in 2010, we decided to drop out of school, to quit our jobs and to pursue this dream more seriously.”

And now they’re playing the mainstage of Tomorrowland. “The magic of being at a festival with thousands of other people from around the world, that’s what makes it so great. It’s an electronic pilgrimage that everyone experiences together. No matter their age, religion, gender or colour. At Tomorrowland you can be yourself, as a visitor and as an artist. Giving everything on stage, surrendering your very being to the crowd is the most honest thing a performer can do. And we’ll be doing just that!”

That decision paid off big time. One of the things that make Krewella stand out is that their tracks always have a deeper meaning. “We definitely write

how Tomorrow came to last a decade When the domains of de Schorre, Boom, Belgium first came to life with a flurry of festival stages and dance devotees, the event’s moniker was oddly prophetic: Tomorrowland. The future held more than one tomorrow for the newly born land, and has until now graced us with ten editions – ten years – of the world’s most magical festival. How did Tomorrowland come to be, and whence comes its allure? This weekend, the final pages of each TML Today are dedicated to our origins. Every day, a different period of Tomorrowland’s history will be chronicled – starting today, with the first three years of festivities.

2005: THE BIRTH OF A FESTIVAL

2005

In Belgium’s northern neighbour, the Netherlands, a movement called Mysteryland had been growing for years. Possibly the world’s most well-traveled festival, it had by 2005 safely settled down at the Floriade grounds, after visiting no less than seven other locations. Its promoters had gone on to mold ID&T into a renowned operation, organizing events such as Thunderdome and Sensation as well as cultivating that very special something that Mysteryland had. Everyone involved felt it: the hills, paths and tiny forests of the Floriade yearly came alive with a dash of magic, a particular shared feeling of enchantment. It was this joint joy that was to be surrected in Belgium as well. A local team, set up by the brothers Beers, found the perfect spot to foster it. De Schorre, an old clay pit with forested walkways, a readily available amphitheatre and beautiful vistas, would become the Mystery-magic’s home away from home. On the fourteenth of August 2005, the Belgian adventure began, and it was called Tomorrowland. From the onset, Tomorrowland was meant to be more than an everyday music festival. The first edition wasted

no time reflecting that. It was a lot smaller than what we are currently used to, but it looked just as bewildering. Huge puppets and creatures, from longnecked blue men to bouncy brown kangaroos, roamed the domains; thousands of guests went exploring just the same. Of course, there were some start-up problems as well. The entrance queue was long, the bars weren’t that fast, and the toilets may have been slightly too few. Tomorrowland being an entirely new festival, some visitors were hesitant to truly dance the day away – but others celebrated merrily. All agreed on two strong points, however: atmosphere and sound. From bumbling fantasy beings to stage décors, lights and fireworks, Tomorrowland had succeeded in its magical mission: to create a land of Tomorrow, outside of normal time. And although music was not to be the festival’s singular forte, it was played on proper systems by skillful – and wellknown – DJs. Thus, the groundwork was laid for an event that would prove, as we now know, to be wildly successful.

2006: A LAND AWAY FROM TIME

2006

To dream, you need to sleep, and to sleep, you need a tent. Just so, Tomorrowland’s second coming included a camping place that offered the most magical of dreams to those who dared spend the night. They woke up to a Tomorrowland one and a half times as big as the first, better organized but just as charming. Certain welcome faces from the first edition returned; most notably, Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten reiterated their performances. Far from bringing only trance, the mainstage was also climbed by David Guetta. Other podia offered a place to everything from the heart-wrenching kicks of hardstyle to the never-stopping train engine that is techno. Tomorrowland’s strategy of inviting partners to provide the musical part of the day turned out to be pretty successful; the people of Tomorrow were introduced to genres they had never heard before, and loved them. Thus, the magic grew. It was no small task to bring to Belgium the seemingly unique feeling Mysteryland had managed to evoke at the former Floriade. So much of it depends on the exact nature of the grounds, the fairies & genies that decide to come out, the mood of the crowd and the weathery will of the gods. (Which in 2006 was first hot, then rainy,

by the way.) This year, however, made it start to look like Tomorrowland was actually pulling it off. People’s reactions were genuinely positive. Although admittedly, it was hard to find due to lack of signposts, the camping added to the festival’s being a land away from time, enchanted and unreal. The camping pre-party, held the night before the main event at the main stage, was a not-yet-wondrous but amicable introduction to the magical day to come. Yet to make all of Tomorrowland a place of dreams required more than just a camping and a stage. A small army of workers, from the actors that embodied Tomorrow’s wild creatures to the volunteers manning first aid, made for a well-oiled operation. The festival’s collective heartbeat, however, was and remains to be in deejay’s hands. The above-mentioned diversity of styles was filled in by masters of music, Ben Sims, Bob Sinclar and Axwell but a few of them. They were also joined, however, by new and local talents. 2006 showed off Tomorrowland’s definite musical direction: worldclass headliners interspersed with little-known, but just as capable wizards of sound. Between them and all the behind-the-scenes sorcerers that made Tomorrowland tick, the Mystery magic was well and truly recreated – albeit with a distinctive twist.

2007: DOUBLE THE DAWNS One of Tomorrowland’s distinctive features first occurred in 2007, with the addition of a second festival day. On Saturday, a limited number of areas was opened to the public, and Belgian dance stars like Marco Bailey played their songs to an enthusiastic flock of fans. These found themselves on a terrain again painstakingly decorated; a few had felt the magic beforehand, and came dressed in fair y’s wings. Through word of mouth and newly erupting social media, Tomorrowland’s reputation slowly grew. Indeed, the festival was beginning to gain international traction, drawing visitors from Germany, France, the Netherlands and even Great Britain. Some of them came over for the whole weekend, staying at the camping, truly experiencing a morrow at Tomorrowland. Some only went on Sunday, the day on which all nine stages were opened. With now twice as many visitors as in 2005 – some twenty thousand – the podia had a lot to cater for. Tomorrowland was growing up into one of the larger festivals, but with growth comes trouble. Although there was no rain on Sunday, the wet weather beforehand had soaked the soil

with water. In the afternoon, having been trampled by thousands of dancers’ feet, the old clay pits of de Schorre finally gave way and turned to goo. Some areas, Q-dance’s high-tech laser-packed hard-dance zone in particular, became veritable lakes of mud. As some will remember, a dancing style befittingly called ‘jumping’ was all the rage in Belgium back then, leading to more than several grimecovered outfits. In the true spirit of Tomorrowland, however, what was a nuisance to some was a blessing to others, and movies of people dancing and playing in the mud may still be found online. Besides, for those not into getting down and dirty, wooden boards had been laid down at the mainstage, where Paul van Dyk closed the day in style. When he played For an Angel, under the accompaniment of a digital flight of doves, a lot of fans were holding back – or letting go – tears of joy. It is said that the third time’s a charm, and indeed, from 2007 on it became clear to guests, artists and crew alike that Tomorrowland had more charm than just a recreation of Myster yland’s magic. In the land of Tomorrow, a grand chase for dawn, for happiness, had begun.
