JULY 19TH 2014

SATURDAY

PEOPLE OF TOMORROW,

THE GATES ARE OPEN! Far and wide the Key has traveled, and today it finally found its lock. The machine has come to life. Yesterday marked the beginning of the tenth day of Tomorrow, and what a day it was. Clearly, the crowd – you – were looking forward to fulfilling the promise of happiness. After opening at noon, the grounds immediately filled up and the first dance steps were soon taken. Pouring out of DreamVille, party people were caught in the claws of Eric Prydz’ Daybreak Session.

On the other side of the terrain, day visitors first discovered the walled-in Opera stage. There were more nooks and crannies to explore than ever and quite a few things about De Schorre had changed. It was a little hot to be bewildered, though, and the big stages’ water blowers were a welcome addition. With a little extra cooling, the People of Tomorrow made it through just fine.

Towards day’s end there was jumping, there were cheers, there was movement fueled by the bass throbbing through everyone’s bodies. Most of Tomorrowland ultimately gathered at the mainstage for a final performance by Armin. The instrument of happiness on which he stood had done its work. Will you help it send smiles into the world again today?

THE SOUNDTRACK TO SATURDAY Dozens of excellent DJs will do their best to make you lose your mind! Isn’t it beautiful? Isn’t all of this, all of Tomorrowland, the beautiful fairytale you hoped it would be? As yesterday slowly comes back to mind, a blur of happy people and maybe a beer or two too much, we help you to focus on today. Every stage has a new name and a fresh line-up, just waiting for you to come on over. Be a superhero at Super You&Me, where Superman, Spiderman

and Batman will drop by to fight the crime of not-dancing. Check out DubVision at V-Sessions vs. Doorn Records, and read all about these youngster in their interview on page 25. If you love hard, Q-dance is in town with a ball-busting and jaw-crushing line-up, from Wasted Penguinz to Angerfist. TALK OF TOMORROW

Kostas Partylotsas and Anatolis Raveordikos from Greece are quite the characters. These two first-timers won’t let anything get in their way of having one hell of a party. They came to have a good time, and they’re gonna have one! Eavesdropping next to their tent, we overhear quite the conversation.

On this day, 4 years ago...

Splash! “Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey,” Kostas shouts as he pours out what was left of tonight’s anti-hangover water all over Anatolis. Although still wobbly to the point of tipping, Anatolis is up now. “Top of the morning to you. How’s the head?” he shouts to his DreamVille neighbours. He isn’t just ready, he was born ready. What’s more: without further ado, he puts on pants and sunglasses and starts towards the Main Road to the festival when Kostas stops him. “What are you running off to so fast?” the hungry friend asks. “I’m off to party,” Anatolis says,

“because you know, yolo. This is our very first Tomorrowland, let’s take in every second of it! Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano are already opening the mainstage at noon – wouldn’t wanna miss that.” “But shouldn’t we get breakfast first?” Kostas replies, craving a freshly baked ciabatta accompanied by a strawberry smoothie. “Besides,” Kostas says, “I would like to start my day with Marc Benjamin who plays the Super You&Me!” But Anatolis doesn’t want to hear it: “There’s no time, man! You’ll just have to live on big fat beats. Absorb them through your pores,

or something. With Netsky and Tiësto and the others, our day will be busy enough. We won’t have time for any of that normal-people eating stuff.” “Could we at least try out some of those Swa & Marieke Belgian fry things later? I hear they’re like mousaka, only without everything except the potatoes, and fried,” Kostas’ stomach commands him to say. “All right then,” Anatolis gives in, “but first my appetite for dancing must be filled!”

It was the first time a Ferris wheel adorned the stage by the day entrance! The History of Tomorrow continues on page 29.

A MAGICAL MORNING

Nothing is too crazy for DreamVille! People are lighting up the barbecue at 10 o’clock in the morning, drinking the other half of last night’s bottle of booze and, last but not least, putting on the wildest of outfits. Go for a morning walk around the campsite and your mind will be blown.

PICTURE PERFECT

Joachim Devedeleer (product specialist Canon Belgium) gives you some useful tips to take better pictures at a festival. Not every one of you brought their DSLR, but if you did, you might want to read this! 1. Don’t overstrain! “You might be used to your wide-angle lens, but don’t always use it. I would advise the exact same thing for a telephoto lens. Just don’t overuse those tools.” 2. Try to capture the moment. “The best pictures made at festivals are probably shot by the professional photographers, but even they depend on other things. Try to capture a special moment like a crowd reacting when a DJ opens his set. Those spontaneous pictures are often the best.”

Cheers! Here’s to the 10th anniversary of Tomorrowland. As you probably expected, the stages are looking stunning again this year. But the view’s way better from above, of course. In the middle of the arena before the mainstage, there’s ‘Bubbles with a view’, the exclusive VIP deck by Vallformorsa. In this special establishment, the possibility to toast to Tomorrowland is offered. The glasses are filled with Vallformorsa’s unique and luxurious cava, a sparkling cider. The winery also supports charity. Every bottle has one of six special caps, designed with the logos of foundations who focus on battling cancer. That’s why Vallformorsas motto is ‘Sip beautifully, act responsibly’.

3. Search for the small things. “A festival has plenty to capture. Especially Tomorrowland! Try to focus at some details like the stage setting and use that as a starting point for different perspectives. Just look for the unseen, the unexpected.”

10 YEARS OF BEER Ever since the very beginning, 10 years ago, Tomorrowland has been supplied with beer by Belgian brewer Maes. In order to celebrate the anniversary, a limited edition set of beers was designed in collaboration with the festival’s creative team. Each can is filled with 33cl of MAES pilsener, and each is uniquely decorated with a drawing based on one of Tomorrowland’s 10 editions. For 15

tokens, you can lay your hands on a tray containing them all! At DreamVille, the Maes Limited Editions can be found at every bar; on the festival terrain, you’ll need to search closely, because only a few bars sell them. And for those who can’t get enough of these colourful cans, a special collector’s box can be won exclusively at maes.be.

FLOWERY ANNIVERSARY

Heartcore “Don’t like, but admire. Don’t speak, but shout. Don’t walk, but dance. Be passionate in what you do. Carpe that f*cking diem! Be heartcore.”

Art for Thought’s tiny Tomorrowland visitors have returned, and in great number! Can you spot the one below? If you find it, send us a selfie with

This year, Floor supplies love, happiness and above all a lot of flowers at Tomorrowland. During the Flower Ceremony and with the Wall of Love for a background, Floor ‘marries’ special lovebirds in the name of Tomorrow. To the right are Steffi and Coen. They’re a couple that met ten years ago at the first edition of Tomorrowland. “I have been together with my girlfriend for 10 years this year and we first met at Tomorrowland. We have so far returned together every year because of that. This is a great way to celebrate our anniversary,” says Koen. The couple’s story was so special that they were chosen as Flower Couple of the day, and their love was declared forever in Tomorrow’s name. “Ten years of Tomorrowland and a ten-year relationship, those things should be celebrated together!”

Walking the bridge 210,000 voices tell the tale of Tomorrow

When asked to describe the singular feeling of Tomorrowland, one of the most heard answers is that it brings people together. There’s people from everywhere around the globe, gathered in one place and unified by music. This feeling has taken shape in the real world in the form of a bridge made by visitors & admirers of Tomorrowland. Every piece of wood on it is imprinted with a message by fans. Today was the first day on which everyone who submitted a piece could look it up, and TML Today was there to look for it with them.

Will, out of Singapore, hasn’t found his work yet either. His stretch of bridge has a deep message on it. ‘The most dangerous risk of all – the risk of spending your life not doing what you want to, on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later.’ It’s a cultural thing, he explains. “In Singapore it’s common practice to work for years and years, in the hope to gain some stability in life. A car, a regular job, the ordinary things, all the while hoping that they will give you the freedom to do whatever you want.” Will has a different view on life, expressed through his message. “I want to explore, to travel, to do everything I want to do before I grow old. Do stuff before you’re bound to reality, take a chance.”

The One World project, as the bridge is called, is enormous. It’s 537 metres long and made of hundreds of thousands of pieces of longlasting wood. Every piece has a message (or multiple) from a person of Tomorrow printed onto it by laser. The bridge stretches across the terrain, providing an entirely new view of the scenery. Yet the most important thing isn’t on eye level, but beneath your feet. You’re being spoken to by 210,000 people. One of them is from France: Marjolaine. With a fixated look she’s searching for her message amongst the others. “I’m very proud to think that my wish will stay here forever, for anyone to see. It says ‘Start smiling, because that’s how life begins.’ I’m a very happy person myself. If you don’t smile, you don’t live.”

Mike, Chris, Linda and Tim traveled all the way from Los Angeles. They stare down at the boardwalk. “It’s like you’re in Disneyland. And this bridge, it’s massive! It’s the one thing here that everybody helped to create. How cool is that, if you think about it?”

If you look closely, you’ll find the most unique and sometimes hilarious things. From ‘Tomorrowland. For everything else, there’s pizza’ to ‘I like turtles’ and ‘I just came here to see boobies.’ Rachael and Jason promise ‘free hugs for everyone!’ but the small print beneath says that the offer is limited to 1 per person on Tomorrowland. Someone else apparently came here to forget his ex, writing ‘I got drunk to forget you. Now I see you double!’

Indeed – how cool is that! The voices of 210,000 people beneath your feet. Take a second next time you walk those planks, and consider the tale of the People of Tomorrow.

A SOCIAL NETWORK FAMILY Next to all the official business on Facebook concerning Tomorrowland, a lot of people have been bonding together on their own Tomorrowland fanpages and events. As the weekend came closer, one of those groups stood out, gathering close to 10,000 members. ‘Tomorrowland 2014 Weekend 1’ became a family. And as with any family, there were family activities!

Holy moley, it’s HOT! It feels great to be back in Belgium, I love this special place called Boom. Happy days are here again – woohoo! Musically, yesterday was incredible. I’m proud to be a part of the best organization in the world and excited about today. Very cool idea to have the first 3 hours programmed the way it is. It’s always easy to bang it out, but better to show the world you’re different. I managed to get my few words across yesterday too – ONE LOVE is the message and I hope we can all make it a reality. So DreamVille, how are you all feeling today? The weekend is now official, are you ready to make history and become part of a legend? Wherever you may be, look out for one another, especially as the heat wave will continue until late in the evening and thunderstorms could well move in. And trust me, if it rains here, ii’s crazy and it will get colder. That’s when some people will need to be looked after, so please be aware. Tomorrow there are so many highlights to look forward to and Netsky for me will be the one to look out for. Homeboy’s first time at the mainstage, so be sure to show him the love he deserves. What can you say about the b2b session from current No. 1 to legendary No. 1? I am sure they will have something very very special lined up, and if you really came to party then this you dare not miss. My boys the New World Punx will also be performing and if I’m right, a new level will be reached, which will set the wonderful Kaskade up nicely. Finally, I must put a shout out to the awesome photographers running their arses into the ground all day. Keep smiling because they will find you! Have a wonderful day... Madness is on its way!

“Our goal was to finally meet each other in person. To take some selfies, drink something, have a good time before going our separate ways again,” states Kevin Gentille. Kevin became a member of this group early on. “It was fantastic! Everyone was so friendly, they helped each other out, answering questions and solving problems. It wasn’t so much just a Facebook group, but a real community.” It was like a small town, where everybody would hang out at the town square, he says. It wasn’t long before Kevin made new friends. Friends he had never seen, heard, or met in person. Kevin decided to organize a meeting. After all, this would be the only time the group would be together. “The plan was to meet up during the Gathering, somewhere next to the dance floor. The following day we’d regroup once again, but this time at the

mainstage. The response was great!” And so it happened. The turn-out wasn’t as massive at the response, mainly because it was so damn busy everywhere. But that didn’t get their spirits down, as you can see on the picture. “Meeting the people I’ve been so closely connected to while counting down to Tomorrowland, really gave that extra spark to the whole experience.” There also is a ‘Tomorrowland 2014 Weekend 2’ group, with over 15,000 members. They seem equally driven to make the most out of their experience. It goes to show the power of social media when they’re used for a positive goal. With Tomorrowland as the common denominator unifying people all over the planet, the internet is a powerful tool. Let’s use it to bring a little happiness into the universe!

THE DJ: MARCO BAILEY

THE CHEF: THOMAS LOCUS

How does it feel, working for B-EAT?

What’s B-EAT like?

“It’s wonderful! To work within the limits of the location and still be able to do what we do best in an effective manner. It’s a challenge, but it works out great. The goal is to make food worthy of a Michelin star, with 8 young and eager cooks who want to prove themselves. It’s satisfying to serve quality food to people who really came for this experience as a whole.”

“It’s hot, bloody hot! But jokes aside, it’s something different. The collaboration between myself and the chef went smooth. We both operate on a high level, aiming for only the best quality. I personally love to eat, which comes in handy. A simple salad, or a special kind of fish with wasabi. I love it!”

As a musician, how do you approach such a peculiar performance?

Is it difficult to match the food to the music? “One of the things I try to do is time the serving of the courses on the beat. That’s what makes it so exciting! Both the DJ and the chef have to interact with their guests in a delicate and dedicated manner, so you’ve got to be creative. And doing a little dancing in the kitchen itself makes the job much more fun.“

“You’ve got to realize the unique character of this little event. What I do is focus on the moment itself. Don’t plan ahead, but feel the mood and adjust my music accordingly. Of course I can’t spin tracks I’d play when standing on a big stage. It makes the whole thing different, but certainly no less thrilling. At the end, we’re still at the biggest festival there is! I mean, the actual festival itself probably is as big as Brussels Airport.”

Aren’t you afraid the music will be the main focus of the people coming over?

Is it something feasible for future repetition?

“We’re at Tomorrowland, so the focus will always be on the music. Let’s not forget that. What we try to do is to create a perfect balance between the delicious food and the music in a unique way. Neither the music nor the food is more important. It’s something special. Music and food at the same time, in an intimate setting. Normally the DJ is far away, now you’re up close and personal. It’s a luxurious feeling.”

“I hope so! Know that this isn’t something every DJ could do. You have to show a certain amount of restraint, and not go nuts with the music. I’m a really open-minded guy and can easily adapt to the high quality of the actual food. It isn’t McDonalds, so you can’t play McDonalds music. By keeping the names of the DJs a secret, people actually come for the concept as it is, not just for the name.”

SATURDAY

JULY 19TH 2014

Bridges For Music DANCE to unite Bridges for Music, a South African non-profit, music-based organization, have partnered up with Tomorrowland this year, providing the opportunity to take two South African artists to the festival. This weekend, DJ Siphe Tebeka, from the Gugulethu township, dropped by the Lotto Dream Island stage. We spoke with Siphe and his manager Trenton Birch about his first experience abroad. First things first: did you guys have a nice flight? South Africa isn’t exactly next door to De Schorre. Siphe: “It was quite hectic, actually. The flight took 16 hours and it was my very first time on an airplane.” Trenton: “And the problem was that we weren’t traveling as a group, so Siphe was totally on his own. First time on an airplane, 16 hours in the sky and when you land you’re at Tomorrowland – quite the experience (laughs).” Siphe: “The closer I got, the more people were wearing Tomorrowland merchandise and I instantly got more excited. And what really struck me was the fact that there’s all kinds of people here, from all kinds of backgrounds and all kinds of colours. So I was like: OK, I’m safe here (laughs).” How would you describe your first experience behind the Tomorrowland decks? Siphe: “Well, it was weird at times (laughs). We played on the Lotto Dream Island, which is a floating platform on the water, and every time the shuttle boat passed by, the whole thing started moving and going bonkers. I was like, what’s happening here (laughs)! But it was cool, people went mental and the stages are just truly amazing. It was also cool that when we tried out one of our new songs about Nelson Mandela – with Trenton on vocals – you saw this group of South African people going totally crazy. You know, it was Mandela Day in our country yesterday, so we wanted to honour Madiba properly.” Let’s find out a bit more about you as an artist. When did you start making music? Siphe: “I started playing music in 2007 with some friends. At first we were just DJing but I wanted to make the crossover to producing rather quickly. So as soon as I got the software, I started making my own stuff. People describe my style as a mix between more traditional house and a variety of South African styles but my main aim is to bring unique sounds – something that has never been made by anyone, ever.”

13 TOMORROWLAND TODAY 2014

DE SCHORRE BOOM BELGIUM

Tell me something about the South African EDM scene. Is there a scene at all? Trenton: “Well, to say that there is such a scene would be a bit weird because it’s all very divided. On the one hand you have the European-focused EDM scene, which is mostly white, and on the other hand you have a massive house scene, which is mostly black. And that last scene is where music lovers from all over the world are looking at right now because it is so unique. It’s all basically the same house music, but with for instance Zulu lyrics on top of it. So we play the same stuff, but we give our own twist to it – it’s becoming a fusion and it’s evolving rapidly. Exciting times!” Is it a fusion between black and white as well? Trenton: “Not enough – yet. And that’s exactly what Bridges for Music wants to work on as well. We’ve taken township producers to a more middle class, white audience and introduced them to each other. And it worked! Because even though those scenes are separated, music has the power to unite. With Bridges for Music we want to uplift the communities but also bring people together. It’s absolutely a social project as well. Music has the power to change the world, and to change our country.”

Today will be hot, just like you people 1: Protection, protection, protection! Don’t forget to put on your sunscreen. If you don’t have any, be sure to borrow or buy some – it is absolutely necessary. 2: Hydration. Make sure to drink enough water, don’t be afraid to visit the refresh points every hour. If you keep on dancing you’ll sweat more than you can drink. Your enthusiasm under yesterday’s tropical heat has only pushed the temperature up further! Here are some tips to prevent sunstroke and survive another day of sweat and nakedness. Make sure to follow them!

3: Shadow. De Schorre offers beautiful places to chill out in the shade – use them! It will help prevent you from overheating and keep you going for longer. 4: Clothing. Although we entirely endorse wearing as little as possible, don’t walk around naked all day. The best way to prevent sunburn is by wearing a shirt. 5: Smile. Because everything is easier with a happy face!

LOST&FOUND

Lost something? Wallet, ID, the love of your life you met yesterday? The Lost & Found stand is located at the info point by the day entrance – that’s the one with the books on top.

Camping GRILLMEISTER

This year Lidl will be looking for the greatest master of the grill at the DreamVille campsite. How can you conquer the title of the one and only true Tomorrowland Grillmeister? Easy: just head over to the butcher shop, wrap one of the BBQ aprons around your neck, grab the grill tools, let the charcoal scorch and cook up the juiciest slice of meat you can. Post your picture on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook using the #Grillmeister hashtag and you might just become that one lucky griller to win an exclusive chopper flight over the grounds of Tomorrowland on Sunday!

THE ART OF SEDUCTION Thousands upon thousands of the planet’s hottest people are all around you at Tomorrowland, so there’s more than enough chance to meet a potential love interest. But how to go about it? How to take that decisive first step? Here’s a couple tips – mix them with a good dose of humour, charm and luck, and you’re set to seduce!

Friday’s winner: Louis Fourie

1. For the not-so-direct would-be casanovas: remember the spot where your crush pitched his or her tent. When looking for your own place late at night, ‘accidentally’ stumble upon them and ask for a place to stay. Not entirely unrealistic, as you wouldn’t be the first one to lose sight of their own tent at DreamVille, and you’ll be instantly in their bed, too! 2. Invite the other over for a drink: one of the good old festival basics. Quench their thirst, still their hunger, all that good stuff. It shows you have your priorities straight and that you are mindful of the wellbeing of your crush. Besides, the way to the heart is through the stomach. Or is it the throat? 3. Be considerate: by being chivalrous at unexpected moments, you can make the difference with those around you who are not so well-mannered. Bring a fan, an extra pair of earplugs, some deodorant, or – why not – a condom, and offer them to your beau. Who knows how your kindness will be rewarded... 4. Create romance: the perfect background music is already provided. All you have to do is wait for nightfall for the perfect romantic atmosphere. The thousands of people partying around you will make it a tad difficult to create an intimate setting, but a poncho or a cardboard box will work wonders to separate yourself from the crowd. Time to kiss! For more to do with love, sex & safety, go to allesoverseks.be or thesite.org.

Kozzmozz

It was living legend Sven Väth who founded Cocoon in order to create a platform for young artists in electronic music. The Cocoon philosophy is: helping young producers and DJs release their music without depending on major labels or other restrictive structures. Cocoon has always stood for true techno with a sometimes dark but always deep, gut-felt undertone of sounds galore. This weekend, the ever performing Väth-man will invite the likes of Seth Troxler, Maya Jane Cole, Joachim, Martinez and Popof while Premiesku will perform an exclusive live set for your ears only, at number 9 on the map.

Calling all crime fighters, shape shifters and teleporters! Wanna party like a superstar? Well, Laidback Luke’s Super You&Me parties are all about saving civilization from mediocrity through ‘younique’ merrymaking music around the globe. Now are you superhuman enough to take on the Super You&Me challenge? Have you got the ammunition? Can you take the suspense? If so, harness all your super powers, dress to impress, and join Luke on an adventure of a lifetime. Have a smile put on your face at Super You&Me, which literally puts you and your friends first. A world of strobe-lit silhouettes and mind-blowing beats awaits at area 1!

DE SCHORRE BOOM BELGIUM

Kozzmozz is the mothership of all K-Events. The first edition was held in September 1995 on a boat in Ghent. The response was overwhelmingy positive and during the following two years, Kozzmozz brought a lot of foreign techno artists to Belgium for the first time: Secret Cinema, Metrodade, Rejuvination, Adam Beyer... In the meantime, electronic music diversified and as more genres developed, they were also incorporated in the concept. Kozzmozz always brings innovating music and therefore remained to be one of the hottest, not-to-be-missed hosting partners at Tomorrowland. Find them at stage 10.

JULY 19TH 2014

A Wake up call by Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano For those who like to focus on the music deeply, this year, each day of the festival will begin with a Daybreak Session. One artist with three hours to fill at the mainstage: that’s the recipe for a musical start of the day. This Saturday, you’ll be welcomed by the dynamic duo Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano.

JULY 19TH 2014

It all started in a clothing store. Not the first place you’d think would bring forth such a successful act as Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano. While working there, selling clothes and stuff, a mutual understanding of music brought them together. They took to making some tunes somewhere in 2006, and are now named as ‘the Dutch version of Swedish House Mafia’ by none other than Axwell himself. They’re residents in the world-renowned club Hakkasan (Las Vegas) and regularly pump out a smashing Essential Mix on

BBC Radio 1. Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano are smooth. They’re gentlemen, but with a sexy twist. That twist led to the hosting of their own night at the famous Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, called ‘Sexy by Nature’. Their sound is funky, electro, erotic and latin, it sways hips and it raises hands. No matter where they’re at, the tension in the air gets deliciously dirty with their music. What better way to start your day than by getting funky for three hours long?

DUBVISION FOCUS ON INCREDIBLE SATURDAY V-Sessions vs. Doorn Records 14:30 - 15:30 barely sleeping) for two days straight, it’s really tough to bring up the same energy as the first gig of the weekend. But you can’t slack off, ‘cause the fans on the dance floor bought a ticket to see you perform at your best. You rarely get to spend time with your friends and family, ‘cause you’re always on the road.” But, as Victor immediately adds to the conversation, it’s all worth it. “The life we live now, the way our careers are heading, all the great things we experience outweigh the trouble we go through so easily. It’s truly a dream come true.”

They’re young, eager and full of promise. Meet DubVision, two brothers who have already made quite the name for themselves. Signed by Spinnin’ Records, DubVision released hits like All By Myself and made remixes for the likes of Afrojack and Icona Pop. They’ve worked with Sander van Doorn and Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, amongst others. Last year they even remixed Chattahoochee by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, the Tomorrowland anthem of 2013. But who are these young guns?

What sets DubVision apart is that they always approach everything purely from a musical perspective. They want to tell a story through their music. “It’s always hard to find your own sound, and to let that evolve into something truly unique. You’ve got to stay true to what you love, but there’s also the need to keep an eye on what’s hot and what’s not. The tricky part is combining those different views on music. We ourselves are a bit more melodic, a bit more ‘smooth’. In the studio we’re always trying to think outside the box. To find a musical angle that’s new, fresh. To take a stroll outside the beaten path. It doesn’t make producing easier, but when you’ve got ‘it’, it’s amazing.”

Stephan and Victor Leicher have been making music for seven years now. Since a year or two their career has skyrocketed, landing them a deal with Spinnin’ and taking them across the world to spread their joyful vibes. They’re living a life most people their age can only dream about. “Producing music has always been our number one priority. During our college years we’d be sitting behind our laptop, making tunes, after a full day of studying Economics (Victor) and working as an architect (Stephan). After a while we noticed the quality of our tracks steadily improved. At a certain point, we thought the time was there to see if Spinnin’ would be interested. They were, and when we got signed we decided to drop everything and focus solely on our music. It’s such a wonderful feeling to travel the world and make people happy with your music. Making your hobby into your actual job, it’s a long road to get there but amazing when it works.”

“We’re always trying to think outside the box.”

At Tomorrowland the brothers are planning to do what they do best; tell a beautiful story with music. “Tomorrowland has worked hard to be the biggest festival in the world. From all corners of the world people come to Boom. The atmosphere, the decorations, the overall feeling, it’s unmatched. It’s a dream to play there. We feel humble and honoured to have the chance to play at the V-Sessions vs. Doorn Records stage. What kind of story we’ll be telling? That’ll depend on the people reading this: our biggest source of inspiration, the crowd.”

But it’s not all rainbows and sunshine. “People in general only see the positive sides of being a DJ. It is beautiful to arrive at a venue and being able to give people the night of their lives. But when you’ve been awake (or

Hardwell

Mainstage 22:30 & Mainstage 00:30 b2b with Tiësto

If you haven’t heard of Hardwell this past year, you probably live under a rock somewhere. Or on the dark side of the moon. Because nobody could have missed all the fuzz around the newest #1 DJ of the world! After Armin and his mentor Tiësto, Hardwell was chosen by fans all around the globe as their most beloved artist in the

famous DJMag Top 100. Recently he also became the new face of Dance4Life, which is leading the battle against the terrible disease AIDS. Dance4Life has been around for ten years, a milestone celebrated with Hardwell playing in the Amsterdams Concertgebouw, a magnificent location normally reserved for classical music. Once

‘just’ Robbert van de Corput out of the Dutch city of Breda, Hardwell is now a leading figure in the world of electronic music. His complex drum ensembles, emotive chords and powerful synths have captivated the newest generation of ravers.

DVBBS

Blasterjaxx

Ferry Corsten

They are fresh! They are Canadian, with a hint of Dutch! DVBBS (which is pronounced ‘dubs’, by the way) is bringing the mayhem to you! Since Tsunami took the world by storm, the two brothers have taken off at lightning speed into stardom. Chris and Andre, who first started off playing punk and dub reggae, have the fullest support of Quintino, Tiësto, Sander van Doorn and many others. Don’t consider them one-hitwonders! After the success of Tsunami they hooked up with another new, young and popular producer: Martin Garrix. The result? Gold Skies, in which legend Sander van Doorn also took part. During their sets they’re all over the place, from trap to hardstyle to electro to house. After smashing Ultra and EDC, DVBBS finally arrive at the epic tale that is Tomorrowland. Prepare to be blasted upside down and inside out by them!

Thom and Idir, better known as the dynamic duo Blasterjaxx, are pushing the borders between electro-house, Latin and that delicious big room sound. With a shared passion for music they’ve taken the world of electronic music by storm since 2010. They enjoy support from artists like Sidney Samson, Gregor Salto and Vato Gonzalez. No surprise, since their shows as well as their productions are marked by an enormous energetic vibe. Every single tune they bring forth is laced with passion. The release of their Reborn EP back in 2012 marked a new chapter in the story of Blasterjaxx: it got them signed by Laidback Luke on his Mixmash Records label. Standing at the beginning of what’s quickly shaping up to be an epic career, one can only wonder what Blasterjaxx will give the world in the decades to come. If the past tells us anything, it’s that it’s going to big.

With Ferry you can’t go wrong. He’s more than trance. He’s everything, and a little bit more. With seven studio albums Ferry is one of a kind. What sets him apart more than anything is not only his diversity, but the way he effortlessly mixes emotions in his music. Ferry is always ahead of the curve, setting the bar for others to top. Tracks like Gouryella (ft. Tiësto) and his remix of William Orbit’s Barber’s Adiago for Strings became legendary club anthems over the years. But his latest production is probably one of the most beautiful in Ferry’s long, long career. He and his wife welcomed a newborn son called Seb into the Corsten family! Ferry, if you’re reading this, congratulations on behalf of everyone at Tomorrowland! We’ll be showing our love for you and your happy family with every move we know during your set on Saturday.

Tiësto

Mainstage 23:30 Tiësto is much more than just a DJ. He paved the way for the current superstars, as he created a global brand out of his name. He was nominated for a Grammy, his ‘Club Life’ radio show reaches millions worldwide, and he co-operates with the biggest companies and clubs there are, including Intel and Hakkasan Las Vegas. Musically speaking, he’s on fire as well. Whereas he gained his fame and glory by producing groundbreaking trance, nowadays he has shifted his focus onto every genre he deems worthy. That way his sound

has steadily transcended genres, something that can be heard on his latest album A Town Called Paradise. His releases come out on his very own label, Musical Freedom, which holds quite a few gold and platinum records. As Tiësto’s traveling from sold-out arena to sold-out arena, he is evolving in an idea rather than a man, spreading love and brilliant tunes everywhere.

Frontliner Q-dance 18:30

With his unique approach to hardstyle, Frontliner has made a name for himself as ‘The Melody Man’. This moniker may give it away a bit, but Frontliner is best known for his intense melodies combined with a devastating kick and that allimportant, non-producible factor; emotion. With Symbols (the Q-BASE anthem of 2012) and Weekend Warriors (Defqon.1 anthem 2013) as absolute highlights, he has built an impressive track record over the last years. All these

productions are released on his own label Keep It Up Music. Moving audiences nearly to tears time after time, he plays every large hardstyle festival there is. His tour around the world is currently being documented on film. The material that’s shot of him at the major festivals is turned into videos for his upcoming tracks under the name ‘The Summer of Frontliner’. But nothing beats the real thing – be sure to check him out at the Q-dance stage!

Sander van Doorn

V-Sessions vs. Doorn Records 21:30 Sander van Doorn is one of the most influential producers the world has ever seen. A musical and technical genius, born in the Dutch city of Eindhoven, he influenced entire generations with his music. That goes for his sets, as well as for his technical know-how in the studio. Always smiling, Sander is a true stronghold within electronic music. In 2014 he worked together with youngster Martin Garrix and DVBBS on the smasher Gold Skies. Another legendary track of his is Renegade, the anthem of the equally famous Trance Energy concept. It goes to show

Ben Klock

Kozzmozz 18:00 Hypnotizing. Ben Klock is hypnotizing. He mastered the skill of taking a dance floor beat by beat and moving it into a state of ecstasy in the infamous Berlin club Berghain, where he is a resident. Long nights full of bodies moving, eyes closed, feet moving, sweat dripping off the ceiling, that’s what Ben Klock does best. He’s a magician, rather than a DJ. With his imprint Klockwork he’s picking up like-minded artists to create a nostalgia-free powerhouse of techno.

Consistency, tension, a dynamical flow within his tracks, that’s his style. No climaxes, no deep drops, only a musical hypnosis. He mixes industrial influences effortlessly with natural sounds. Even though his slot at Tomorrowland this Saturday is not one of his famous marathon sets at Berghain, rest assured that Ben will give you a taste of what they feel like. Before you know it, your hour with him will have gone by.

Sander knows how to get the most out of every genre around. Such a name deserves more than just a DJ slot at Tomorrowland. Obviously, it suits him better to host an entire area. Doorn Records will be doing a co-op hosting with Yves’ V-Sessions all day long. Enough said. Get over there!

JULY 19TH 2014

2010

how Tomorrow came to last a decade When the domains of de Schorre, Boom, Belgium first came to life with a flurry of festival stages and dance devotees, the event’s moniker was oddly prophetic: Tomorrowland. The future held more than one tomorrow for the newly born land, and has until now graced us with ten editions – ten years – of the world’s most magical festival. How did Tomorrowland come to be, and whence comes its allure? This weekend, the final pages of each TML Today are dedicated to our origins. Every day, a different period of Tomorrowland’s history will be chronicled. Today, we consider the years 2010 and 2011.

2010: BUILDING CHARACTER

2010

A decade into the new millennium, Tomorrowland was going stronger than ever. Last year’s massive edition had laid claim to an authoritative position among dance music festivals worldwide, and 2010 would be the year to seal the deal. Online, both on old-fashioned forums and newly popular social media, Tomorrowland’s magical atmosphere was tipped as a great thing to see. Before long, all tickets – including 25,000 camping spots – were sold out again. In order to take the crowd to greater heights than last year, 2008’s giant sea turtle swum back to the grounds and settled near the day entrance, carrying a Ferris wheel on its back. Meanwhile, on the other side of the domain, an enormous rainbow came out over the friendly-faced sun which loomed above the audience. Due to the large scale of the event, there was room to realize a counterpoint to the massive stages as well. Tomorrowland had always been populated by a multitude of wondrous creatures, and the environmental decorations had been growing in detail from year to year. Now, the amount of dancers, fairies, gnomes and other small curiosities was such that they became unavoidable. Which was a good thing.

29 TOMORROWLAND TODAY 2014

DE SCHORRE BOOM BELGIUM

The magic of Tomorrowland, after all, hangs somewhere in the balance between grandeur and detail. Looking back at Mysteryland one more time, the 2010 edition shows that whereas its Dutch precursor is rich in small, surprising stages and performers, Tomorrowland is enchanted with a single theme throughout. From tiny signposts to towering podia, everything is infused with one single spirit, a magical lust for Tomorrow. Out of the distinctive twist of the first couple of years, Tomorrowland had definitely developed its own style compared to its northern parent. When, towards the weekend’s end, David Guetta took the mainstage, there was nothing holding the crowd back. No apprehension, no hesitation, only a sea of people who felt at home and safe enough to dance like no one was watching. It truly was a sight to behold, and much-discussed afterwards: what must have been ten thousand people waving and jumping in unison, from left to right, all about the floor. Closing DJ Chuckie followed suit with a sitdown on a scale never seen before, and thousands of people left the grounds drunk. Not (necessarily) with alcohol, but with a love for Tomorrow. Last year’s promise of a bigger-than-ever edition was well and truly fulfilled.

2011: DANCE REVOLUTION In 2011, it became clear that the surge in popularity of electronic music, which had partially fueled Tomorrowland’s 2010 success, was not going to subside anytime soon. Dubstep was more than a passing hype and Swedish House Mafia had scored more hits than just One. Dance music genres that had enjoyed consistent popularity in Europe for decades finally got the worldwide recognition they deserved. Clearly, it was time for the magic to multiply and Tomorrowland expanded into a threeday festival. The occasion meant further enlargement of the camping, called DreamVille since last year, and a bigger ‘n better Gathering pre-party. Guests were welcomed to their temporary home by the rainbow from last year’s main, now doubling as a massive entry gate. Through it, campers poured out into the festival grounds, where they were greeted by the Tree of Life. She had laid down her roots in the mainstage, her branches stretching across the width of the valley, strange, amphibious creatures crawling from her hidey-holes. In front of her: a diversity of people the festival had never before seen. Canada’s maple leaf, Australia’s Commonwealth blue ensign, and everything in between was waved wildly to and fro amidst the crowd.

In the meantime, the line-up of Tomorrowland had evolved in keeping with the development of dance lovers’ tastes. Beneath the Tree of Life, a mixture of electro and progressive house could be heard, with performers including Faithless, Steve Aoki, Wolfgang Gartner and 2 Many DJs. At the other thirteen podia, styles ranged from deephouse to schranz and beyond. Wherever one went – be it a little-known forest path or a packed dance floor – cheerful people could be found. If during the first five or so years of Tomorrow, the audience was sometimes unsure of how to respond to the festival’s grandeur, they certainly weren’t anymore. And it was the People of Tomorrow who now made the magic, of course, with their relentless relinquishment of everyday societal standards, their unconditional acceptance of the fantasy world they found themselves in, and their joint will to create a Tomorrow to never forget. It was as if a voice could be heard upon entering the festival saying, ‘we’re here to share, we’re here to create the incredible.’ Backed by so many eager supporters, the magic extended across the pond; at the Internatonal Dance Music Awards, among exclusively North American nominees, Tomorrowland conquered the prize for ‘Best Festival’.
